Sarah Bernhardt #bornonthisday (22 Oct 1844 – 26 Mar 1923) was a French stage actress who starred in some of the most popular French plays of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. She also played male roles, including Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Called “the queen of the pose and the princess of the gesture”, while other praised her “golden voice”.

Bernhardt began painting while she was at the Comédie-Française. Her paintings were mostly landscapes and seascapes, with many painted at Belle-Île. She exhibited a 2-m-tall canvas, The Young Woman and Death, at the 1878 Paris Salon. Via Wikipedia
