TGCF: My theory on the inspiration behind the 4 calamities
In some of the oldest Chinese myths and legends, there are 4 guardian gods of the four cardinal directions - the green dragon, white tiger, crimson bird, and black tortoise, and each have a colour, season and element associated with them. I'm not sure if anyone has made this connection before, but I'm writing it down if anyone is interested. There are spoilers about the calamities' identity.
First, the 青龙 (qing long, green dragon) --> Qi Rong, Night-touring Green lantern.
The qinglong's territory is the East, and its colour is qing, which means green, or turqoise. Its element is wood, and its season is spring. Closely associated with royalty and the imperial family.
Now, for the similarities with our favourite green goblin. "qing" is literally the colour in Qi Rong's title, and his colour scheme. Qi Rong has a habit of hanging corpses from trees, which may be his relation to the element "wood". He does not have any obvious coleration with the season "spring"- perhaps he was born in spring. He is royalty, part of the imperial family as cousin to the crown prince.
Second, the 白虎 (bai hu, white tiger)--> Bai Wuxiang, White Clothed Disaster upon the Earth.
The baihu's territory is the West, its colour is white, element is gold/metal, and its season is summer. It is the king of all beasts, associated with disease and war, often used as a guardian symbol by soldiers.
On the other hand, Jun Wu's title, alias and colour scheme are all white, and has plenty of weapons that may be his link to the element of "gold/metal". I don't think he has anything to do with summer, but feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. He is king of the gods, a god of war, and the one to spread the human face disease.
As east and west are considered a pair, the guardian spirits are meant to reflect each other. In Chinese poems and such, symmetry is important, and both Qi Rong and Jun Wu were princes, one becoming revered by the highest of gods, covered with masks and false identities, one becoming the object of disgust by the lowest of ghosts, using his real name and face. There is a certain poetic symmetry to it, don't you think?
To the second pair. The 朱雀 (zhu que, crimson bird)----> Hua Cheng, Crimson Rain Sought Flower
The zhuque rules over the south, its colour is red, element is fire, and its season is summer. It is the king of all birds, more powerful than even the phoenix, immortal and undying. As such, in many places it is also considered a symbol of life.
Now, to the most popular ghost king: Hua Cheng. The english translation of his title is "crimson", and his colour scheme is indubitably red and autumn-y shades. He also re-re-met Xie Lian in autumn ( I think - I mean, the leaves were all red in the donghua??), and has died again and again to return like the zhuque. He is the king of all ghosts, with a great determination to live(sorta? are ghosts alive??) for his love.
Lastly, my personal favourite, the 玄武 (xuan wu, black tortoise)---->He Xuan, Black Water Sinking Ships
The xuanwu, also called a tortoise, is actually the only spirit to be a combination of 2 animals, a snake and a tortoise. It rules over the north. Its colour is black( sometimes depicted as dark blue), element is water, and its season is winter. In earlier legends, he is considered a guide and guardian to the netherworld, of death and of long life.
Thus, to our poor indebted water ghost. He Xuan's name is "xuan", the same! goddamn! character! as the spirit! His title and colour scheme are all to do with the colour black, and he is a water ghost because he died because of the Water Master. He has been marked by death, yet survived and vowed revenge. This, and the fact that his house is called the Nether Water Manor, is probably his relation to the netherworld of the xuanwu.
To the pair of south and north. Both Hua Cheng and He Xuan have suffered and suffered again, yet Hua Cheng chooses to linger on due to hope and love, and He Xuan due to revenge and hatred. But hatred and love are two sides of the same coin. If Hua Cheng hadn't experienced the hatred from his childhood, he wouldn't have thrown himself from the city wall and met Xie Lian. If He Xuan hadn't loved his family, so much, he wouldn't have broken that hard after their deaths to lose himself to hatred and empty vengence.
Aaaaaand that concludes this essay. Keep in mind that this is a theory, and probably even isn't true, but if anybody wants a more detailed description of the guardian spirits, or to know more about the similarities between the mythical creatures of ancient china and tgcf, I will be more than happy to make a part 2.
Thanks for reading!!

Bo, the 211th Known One.
Three  hundred li farther west stands Mount Winding-Center. There is much jade on its southern slope and much realgar, white jade, and metal on its northern slope. There is a beast dwelling here whose form resembles a horse but with a white body, black tail, a single horn, and tiger’s teeth and claws. It makes a sound like a drum and is called the Bo. The Bo devours tigers and leopards. It can also protect against weapons. - Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shan Hai Jing)

The Zhujian [Chinese mythology]
According to the ancient Chinese Shan Hai Jing (the ‘classic of mountains and seas’), there is a place called Single-Sheet Mountain. The location of this mountain, if it even corresponds to a real-life place, is unclear, but it features a desolated high-altitude landscape where no trees or other plants grow.
Several strange creatures call these heights home, one of which is the Zhujian. The most striking characteristic of this bizarre beasts is its human head, while its body resembles that of a leopard. It has a singular eye in the middle of its face, and its ears resemble those of an ox. The Zhujian has a remarkably long tail, which it holds in its mouth when moving. When the creature sits down, its long tail is coiled.
Not much is known about these creatures, but the Shan Hai Jing also mentions that it is known for making angry shouts.

Welcome to the 'Best Character with [X] surname' polls!
This is where I take several characters from different Chinese media (mostly cnovels and cdrama) and run a poll on which one is the 'best'. What does best mean? It's up to you! Whether you love them, are intrigued by their characters, love to hate them, or they're your '2 second blorbos whose personality you made up wholesale', these are all reasons for you to vote for your favs!
NB: the surnames are not exactly the same in all the cases, as often they will be a different character. I am, however, grouping them all together otherwise things got more complicated.
If you can't find a surname, it's because I couldn't find enough candidates (at least 3 from 3 distinct medias) to compete. Feel free to submit candidates!
I will be posting several polls at a time, so do come back and check this masterpost to remember which polls are ongoing, who the winners are, and who's coming up next!
Currently ongoing polls:/Chi/Shan/Tian/Dao/Chao/Xin/Ran/Sang/Miao/Cang/Yao/Zang/Chong/Nangong

Qiongqi Beast, one among the four legendary primordial beasts of China - Namesake of Qiongqi Path (MDZS) - The foreshadow of Wei Ying’s death. - Illustration by Shan Zhe, published in Guan Shan Hai, the compiled and edited version of the OG Shanhai Jing, by Hunan Literature and Art Publishing House.
Recently I got my hand on Shanhai Jing (Classic of Mountains and Seas), the 2200+ years old classical text on Chinese fantastical flora, fauna, beasts, strange people, and gods. Qiongqi is counted among Shanhai Jing menagerie. Below is my translation of the description of Qiongi Beast directly from Hunan’s Shanhai Jing.
窮奇 (Qiongqi)
- Text directly from the 2200+ year old Shanhai Jing: Qiongqi has the shape of a tiger with wings. It eats human, starting from the head. Those who it eats all have their hair unbound. It lives North of the Peach Dog’s den.
- Modern Anthropologist Notes (by Hunan Publishing House’s editing team):
1/ Qiongqi beast has the shape of a winged tiger. It is a vicious man eater. When it eats, it starts from the head. Those who are eaten by it all have their hair unbound.
2/ Qiongqi also appears on Xishan Jing (Classic of Western Mountains), where it is described as ox-like, with porcupine quills, and barks like a dog. This description is vastly different from the one in Shanhai Jing.
3/ Qiongqi is mentioned in many ancient texts. In the Records of the Five Emperors, Qiongqi is said to be the hideous, good-for-nothing son of Shaohao (son of the Yellow Emperor, one of the three legendary ancient emperors of China) (*). It is said to destroy those who are loyal and faithful and fawn over those who are deceitful and perverse.
(*: In other words, Records of the Five Emperor claims that Qiongqi was a human prince who fell to beasthood out of wickedness)
4/ Both the Records of the Five Emperor and Shenyi Jing (Classic of Strange Gods) agree that Qionqi is an evil beast that has completely reversed concept of good and evil. Shenyi Jing notes that Qionqi eats those who are good, honest, and loyal and will aid wicked liars.
- End Translation -
 .....................................................
Symbol of Qiongqi in MDZS:
If you have read MDZS, then there’s probably no need to repeat the name Qiongqi Path. The symbolism is readily apparent.
Qiongqi Path is the site where Wei Ying was repeatedly forced onto a death path by Jin schemes. The first time was when he rescued the Wen remnants (who were forced to move from a neutral territory Ganquan  甘泉 to Qiongqi Path, controlled by Jin after the Sunshot campaign, as per the novel). And the second time was during Jin Zixun’s failed ambush.
In other words, Wei Ying’s death was foreshadowed in the name of the location itself. Qiongqi beast destroys and eats the good, honest, loyal person with hair unbound. It eats from the head down, symbolizing the loss of agency and ability to call for help or argue the person’s own case. Wei Ying was symbolically eaten by Qiongqi.
If you want to look further, there is also correlation between Qiongqi’s origin as a human prince associated with the color yellow who fell to beasthood out of wickedness and the Jin’s origin as a cultivator House founded by royalty and whose primary color is yellow.

For whom was this spring created (if I cannot spend it with you)?
Special thanks to @alamangoes for illustrating this idea so well and blowing me and @botanycrewmember out of the water every time she sent us an update!
Reference and research under the link!
These are the references that we sent to Stes before we commissioned her. We just thought it was neat to share <3
For the general silhouette and cut of the clothes, we had references of paintings & sculptures from the Southern-Northern Dynasty and early Sui Dynasty. The clothing patterns are inspired by the characters’ names (waves from Gu Hengbo’s “bo” and clouds from Yuan Zixiao’s “xiao”).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gu Hengbo’s hairstyle is taken directly from the novel, described as a high bun held up with strings of jade beads; Yuan Zixao’s hairstyle is a simple period-appropriate topknot that allows for easy maintenance during travels.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gu Hengbo’s sword, Tian Wei Shei Chun, is based on a replica of a sword forged in the 6th century; the charm on the sword hilt is a traditional Chinese bow that we decided is made by Yuan Ying for his shimei.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yuan Zixiao’s fingertips are stained with ink due to her role as an archivist; the water and cloud motifs in the background are inspired by illustrations from the Shan Hai Jing, emphasizing the distance and yearning between the two characters

Out of curiosity, what is the silliest most impossible biology you've seen or heard on a mythological creature? Like, "what am I even reading" tier.
I get that all the time!
We kind of take it for granted, but the Chimera is the original "this doesn't make sense" creature. Even the ancient Greeks figured that it had to have been inspired by some real-life event, like a volcano with lions, goats, and snakes on it.
The goat was the biggest issue. Nobody quite knew how it was supposed to be involved. My favorite interpretations are the ones where a whole half goat rises like a tumor out of the chimera's back, which I tried to replicate.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And since we're on the subject of Greek monsters that are confusing, what about Scylla? Homer gives her 6 heads and 12 legs and sticks her in a cave where she yaps like a puppy. Greek artists apparently couldn't figure out how to draw that so she evolved from a multi-headed dragon-thing into a mermaid with dogs coming out of her middle. As they do.
Tumblr media
How do they go for walkies?
And then of course there's Typhon with his frankly ridiculous number of heads and arms, and then Nonnus decides to one-up that with his description of Campe in the Dionysiaca.
Moving on from Greek silliness though, you've got to appreciate the sheer what-the-heckery of the creature described by Iambulus and which, for lack of a better name, is called a geluchart.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It may be a turtle. Or a pufferfish.
And there's a bunch of weirdos in the Shan Hai Jing. Heard of multi-headed creatures? How about one head and many bodies?
Tumblr media
The heluo-fish is weird.
And on the subject of multiples, what about Kuyutha? How does something have 40,000 eyes, 40,000 noses, 40,000 ears, 40,000 mouths, 40,000 tongues, and 40,000 legs?
Tumblr media
I gave it a shot.
The creatures described by the Inuit mystic Anarqâq are also bizarre - if it wasn't for his drawings of them, I'd have no idea how to depict them myself. Igtuk, for example? He has arms and legs on on his back, one big eye level with his arms, ears on the same level, nose inside a cavernous mouth, and a tuft of thick hair on the chin.
Tumblr media
Friendly!
I should probably also mention the chemosit. Because, you know. Nine buttocks.
Tumblr media
What about life cycles? Basilisks and basilisk-adjacent creatures go through some absurd life cycles. The basilisk's is actually the simplest one - just have an egg laid by a rooster and incubated by a toad. Easy! But if you want a skoffin, you'll need a male fox to reproduce with a female cat, have the kittens born with their eyes open, and then have them sink into the ground to mature for 3 years before emerging as deadly monsters. And for a gallo de la muerte - a ROOSTER OF DEATH - you need a kite to lay a red egg in a gorse bush, the resulting black and white bird to live for fifty years, and then for a green worm to emerge from its decaying corpse and become said rooster of death.
Tumblr media
But personally I think the prize for the most Outrageous and Downright Most Bizarre Creature I've seen yet goes to the Butatsch Cun Ilgs. That's right, the Swiss lake monster that's a giant cow stomach covered in thousands of eyes that can make fire erupt.
Tumblr media
Defender of the peasantry!
That's all I've got off the top of my head. There's definitely more but that would have to wait for another time...

Wang Chuan Feng Hua Lu (忘川风华录) Masterpost
Tumblr media
Wang Chuan Feng Hua Lu (忘川风华录) is a Vocal synth (Vocaloid and SynthV) music project. It consists of songs themed around different figures throughout Chinese history. The project is a collaboration between different artists and creatives, with music and videos featuring prominent traditional Chinese elements. The project's title translates to "The Records of Magnificence of the Wangchuan" - In Chinese mythology, "Wangchuan" (or River of Forgetting) is a river in the Underworld that can rid one of their past life's memories, similar to the river Lethe.
A mobile game adaptation has also been developed by NetEast. Unfortunately, I haven't played it so I can't give much insight on it. However, I assume that its premise is similar to that of the idea behind the project as a whole: all these historical figures meeting each other in the Underworld after they died. Maybe.
You can find all the songs on Bilibili. The official Weibo can be found here. The game's website, which includes all characters appearing so far in the game, can be found here, and its Weibo can be found here.
(If you prefer YouTube, I've also put together a handy playlist. Please know that most of these videos are reposts though, so please watch the original Bilibili MVs if you can!)
This blog is where I will be posting everything I feel like I need to say about the songs in this project. A lot of it is lifted from my Twitter account but will be in much more detail. Note that I probably won't touch collab songs, or songs that don't focus solely on the project's own characters.
Disclaimer: I do not speak Chinese, nor am I an expert on Chinese history. Therefore, I cannot reliably translate the lyrics to these songs, nor my words should be taken as gospel. I am merely a nerd gushing about my hyperfixation.

MDZS-On Wei Wuxian and huli jing
So. In fanarts and fanfiction, Wei Wuxian is often depicted as a huli-jing, or a jiuwei-hu (nine-tailed fox). This is why the jiuwei hu is such a good animal to represent Wei Wuxian in particular.
Huli-jing, from 狐狸(huli, fox), and 精 (jing, spirit) and jiuwei-hu, from 九尾(jiuwei, nine tails) and 狐(hu, fox)
The jiuwei-hu first appears in the Shan Hai Jing, described to be "similar in shape to a fox but with nine tails, its cry sounds like a infant's wail, eats people, if you eat it, you will be untouched by evil"
It is a auspicious creature, and symbolises that the ruler of the time is just. It can shapeshift, and cultivates its power and gains tails. If it lives a thousand years, it will become a fox-immortal.
From then on, there are several records of jiuwei-hu as a benevolent creature. In the Qinhan period, the 孝经 records: "the nine-tailed fox is the most virtuous of creatures". In East Han, 班固's 白虎通义 records: "the fox is a virtuous creature and an omen of many children and grandchildren"
However, in the Tangsong period rumours about the fox as a huyao(fox-monster) or huli-jing(fox-spirit->usually malevolent). As time went on, more and more stories of jiuwei-hu as monstrous spirits appeared. The characteristic of eating people was part of the twisting of the fox's nature, and imperial concubines were sometimes accused of being shapeshifting huli spirits intent on causing destruction by "seducing and distracting" the emperor. Often, when dynasties fell, it would be blamed on a woman, usually a concubine, for leading the emperor astray, and they would be accused of being huli-jing.
The huli-jing and jiuwei-hu are mainly known as malevolent spirits, who trick and confuse people, and huli-jing can be used an insult to women.
This ties in well with Wei Wuxian's story. For starters, the cry of the jiuwei-hu-其声如婴儿-is described with the same character as Wei Wuxian's name, 婴,meaning child or baby. The shift from the huli-jing's story from benevolent creature to malevolent creature echoes Wei Wuxian's story arc. He begins as a beloved young master, strong and clever and with a good reputation, before descending to a near-mythical figure feared and envied in equal measure, surrounded with rumours and accusations. It's only at the end of MDZS that his name is cleared, and like the huli-jing in present times, is beginning to regain its former glory. The huli-jing is now the subject of many novels and they are portrayed as benevolent almost as much as malevolent.
Thus, Wei Wuxian being a huli-jing is a damn good idea. Kudos to whoever came up with it.

Designs for the Red Horse Monkey and the Long-Armed Gibbon.
Adding them to a few AUs and making a whole ass AU centered around them. I might make a MasterPost one day, but now’s not the time.
Won’t explain it too much, I might spam this acc a bit…
‘The Monkey Brotherhood’ have multiple names for each other so that when one is speaking about the group, no one can really tell who they’re talking about.
Sun Wukong
-Mei Houwang: Handsome Monkey King
-Bimawen: Keeper of the Heavenly Stables
-Sun-xingzhe: His Monk title when Sanzang accepted him as his companion (Also for used aesthetic)
-Dou-zhansheng-fo: Victorious Fighting Buddha
-Ling-mingdan-hou: Intelligent Stone Monkey
-Sun Zhanglao: Honorific for a monk.
-Lingming Shihou: Stone Monkey of Numinous Wisdom
Six-Eared Macaque
-LiuEr Mihou: Basically his name in Chinese. (Since LMK doesn’t use Chinese translation for the name like Macaque’s name)
-Mihou Wang: Macaque King (This is a reference to JTTW’s original Macaque King, it references the original sworn brotherhood)
-Tongfeng dasheng: The Great Sage Informing Wind.
-Fa Bu Zhuan Liu Er: Law does not pass to the Six Ears/the third pair or person/there is no third party [sixth ear] present.
-Waidao Pangmen: Side door-for someone who eavesdrops in secrets.
Red-Buttocked Horse Monkey
-Chikao mahou: his name in Chinese, they actually refer to this name more.
-Wu Zhiqi: A name given by The Spiritual Attainment of Minghe Novel also it is a name given by Shan Hai Jing Records (I was running out of names since Red has no information on him unfortunately)
-Chikao Dasheng: I tried to combine the name ‘Great Sage’ and Chikao which means wise. (Probably Wukong being stupid)
-Dasheng zhihui Zhi she: I had to make up a title, and thus came up with ‘The Great Sage Wisdom’s Tongue’
Long-Armed Gibbon/Ape.
-Tongbei Yuanhou: Name in Chinese, usually referred this way.
(I don’t have other names, I just need to find a lot of things)

Kung fu panda: Po's best companion
Still on the train of Kung fu panda, and...you know everyone saying the franchise is dead now cause of it's 4th movie. everyone seemed to forget that there was always 6 movies that were going to be made and that the 4th movie isn't THAT bad. don't believe me, go watch the megamind sequel and see how bad the movie COULD have been.
but, my feelings on everyone's negativity aside, I still want to talk about that kung fu doing Panda. here I want to give you all MY opinion on I believe is Po's best companion.
Tumblr media
each and every instalment has given us a slew of new characters to fight alongside Po on his journey to become the world's best kung fu master.
in kung fu panda 1 we have Shifu, Tigress, crane, monkey, viper and mantis. these 6 follow into the tv series legends of awesomeness. while there are they are quite a few new companions, such as Peng, there only lasted for an episode or two. so it's the 5 who are po's companions.
in the second movie, the only two knew characters or Ox and Croc but they stay in prison. the soothsayer is sorta like Oogway, not a companion but a spirital teacher.
in the third movie, we take a change and have Po's dad, mr.Ping and his birth dad, Li Shan as Po's companions.
in the paws of fury, they introduce Po's panda students Nu Hai, Bao, Jing, and Fan Tong.
in Dragon knights we have the wandering blade, Rukhmini, Akna, Colin, and eventually Klaus Dumont.
now and in the newest movie we got Zhen in kung fu panda 4.
those are alot of friends, but who do I believe was and still is Po's best companion? answer:
Tumblr media
it's Luthera, also known as wondering blade. Ha ah, believed I would tell you it was tigress, huh? sorry to you Tipo shippers but I believe Blade is not only Po's best companion but the shipper in me thinks she is also Po's best girl.
let me explain. while Po cares for everyone of his friends in their own ways there were some moments keeping me from thinking they were the best side kick to po and vise versa. some are his family, his students are really just his students, this includes Zhen and shifu is his teacher. the closest to being Po's true companion was monkey in the furious 5 and legends of awesomeness, still it isn't tigress, the reason is that each one claimed Po was their best friend in an episode or another (Tigress had yet to say that), I have so many issues with the legends of awesomeness series for making Po a borderline jerk so it makes sense that sometimes they'd turn their backs on Po. Even Tigress wants to Punch but holds back, hint: in an episode where Po makes the 5 forget their memories Tigress does punch Po and says it felts so right despite not remembering Po. so what about the movies? in the movies Tigress is super close, what prevents me from saying Tigress is Po's companion is that if she is ever given a choice, go with Po or stay behind to protect the jade palace, she choose to stay at the palace. similar in the third movie when shifu had to tell her to go find Po.
thus we get to Blade/Luthera. the dragon knights have some flaws. but it does things that I didn't realize that I wanted to see in this universe of animals. it's what do the other locations outside of China are like and what animals live there. like india, brazil, and england. it also made me realize I wanted to see Po interact with another bear, a different type of bear. it makes sense that he meets a brown bear.
this isn't a Blade vs Tigress debate as I seen many do compare the two and argue they should have just put tigress in since the two act similar ,....ok, do you sense a pattern here or is it just me, I'm saying Blade is different in ways that make her a better companion to Po.
as I mentioned Blade and Po have yin and yang dynamic. in one episode Po can be the hero while Blade is the side kick and in another it's Blade taking the lead and Po giving support. Blade keeps Po grounded and focused but needs him to give her emotional support. this is how her relationship on Po develops. while Po, losing his title as dragon master (this show is a separate canon so it's master instead of warrior) and he admits he also depended on Blade. in one moment the two admit they were lost before meeting each other. their combat mirrors this, Blade with swordsmen ship and Po with hand to hand, this gives them coverage. Po teaches Blade some belly attack and headbutts that she uses throughout while Po finally uses Blade's technique and fights with a sword. their reunion in the third season is also a spin hug, take that how you will. this all comes to the end of the series, in the beginning Po was on an eating vacation. taking stops here and there, and when the series is done Luthera joins Po on his adventure, Po stating they can go anywhere they want and her replying, that sounds perfect. Po is happy at the end when he says that he found..a best friend.
all this is why I believe Po and Luthera are the ultimate kung fu panda duo. this is just me thought, tell me who you believe is Po's best companion?

The Changfu [Chinese mythology]
Foundation Mountain is a – presumably fictional – location mentioned in the ancient Chinese work Shan Hai Jing, the Classic of Mountains and Seas. Strange creatures dwell on the slopes of this mountain, such as a goat with four ears, nine tails and a set of eyes located on its back.
One of these bizarre species is the Changfu, a mythical bird with three heads and six legs. It also has a third wing on its back, but aside from these extra extremities it resembles a normal chicken.
Not much is known about their ecology or behaviour, but its meat has a special characteristic to prevent the eater from sleeping. Those who hunt and consume a Changfu will find themselves unable to sleep.

What do the Four Constellation Kids, Kai, and Jing in your Modern AU do on Halloween?
The Four Constellations are taken trick or treating by Po. Li Shan and Mr. Ping are always the first stop. Jing is going with them probably dressed like an anime character as a duo with Nu Hai. Kai usually doesn't do anything for Halloween besides going to the occasional party if he's been invited to one...and scaring the chi out of the neighborhood kids by dressing up as a killer with a real chainsaw.
