Proof that Tony Stark is not an alcoholic in the MCU. Part 2

Iron Man 2:

What’s going on: Tony is dying from palladium poisoning. Alcohol would make things worse for him. Let’s check how much he drinks there:

0:18:15 – Tony is drinking chlorophyll to reduce symptoms.

0:21:20 – Pepper asks him “Have you been drinking?”, Tony replies “Chlorophyll”. He’s completely honest (we just saw him doing it).

0:21:40 – they are drinking champagne to celebrate the new CEO of Stark Industries.

0:26:28 – Monaco. Waiter brings alcohol to Tony and Pepper. Tony takes a glass of (probably) scotch and Pepper a glass of something else.

0:26:31 – Tony says “Cheers” but moves his glass towards Natasha (as if showing her to take it), and she instantly takes both glasses from them and gave them back to the waiter. The guy looks kinda disappointed.

0:26:40 – Pepper takes her drink back, but Tony doesn’t.

0:51:40 – blood toxicity level – 89%. Tony repeats that he wants to cancel the party.

0:53:00 – Tony drinks the dirty martini that Natasha made for him.

0:53:58 – Tony seems drunk. He has a bottle in his hand.

0:55:09 - Pepper takes the bottle from him.

0:56:30 - we can see another bottle in Tony’s hands (Re­my Mar­tin Co­gnac). It's less than half full and there's no way Tony could drink it all.

Then Tony and Rhodey fight each other. See my post “Tony wasn’t drunk (or explanation of his plan to die alone in IM2)” to understand what’s going on in the scene.

Briefly: Tony’s blood contains an almost deadly amount of palladium and can’t stand much alcohol, which is toxic if you didn’t know. He wants to pass his armor to Rhodey without making him and Pepper suspect that something is wrong (see Fury’s words in the Donut scene). He needs to control what’s happening, so he can’t drink at the party, but he pretends that he does. For example, he “can’t stand” in one moment, but has no coordination problem after that. He has “slurred” speech at the party, but after the fight started, it’s back to normal. He can aim easily, something that a drunk person wouldn’t be able to do. He also hurt no one, despite seemingly reckless behavior, and drove the crowd away before blowing up the house with Rhodey.

1:14:58 – Tony drinks Dr Pepper with ice (not alcohol) – we can see the can on the table next to him at 1:14:50.

That’s it. Again we have like 50 minutes until the end of the movie and there are no more scenes where Tony drinks something.

What we can tell by now? Tony drinks 2 times throughout the movie (a glass of champagne at 0:21:40 and a glass of martini at 0:53:00), that’s even less than in his first movie. For comparison, Pepper had 2 drinks in the movie too. And she is not even the main character, accused of being an alcoholic.

He shows poisoning symptoms and “strange” behavior in the movie that others (Rhodey and Pepper) see as signs of alcohol intoxication (like at 0:21:20 or in the Alternate Opening of the movie). I’ll write about that more in the future.

Conclusion: still “normal drinker”.

If we go back from the MCU to our real world, the reason behind the fact that Tony is not an alcoholic on Earth 199999 is purely financial – we are dealing with a movie, whose audience includes kids and teenagers. And one of the main sources of profit for Marvel is merchandise for young consumers. And a guy with a drinking problem is not the most appropriate hero for them.

Here’s the screenwriter Justin Theroux’s words about the Party scene in Iron Man 2:

“…That's how we landed on his illness, that it's the metaphor for a man who's running out of steam and needs his friends to step up. Whereas, if we ran right toward the 'Demon in the Bottle' story, nobody wants to see Tony like that."

"We realized that in a comic book you can have one key-frame where it's a guy, drunk, but in a movie, that's gotta be a big scene and it's gotta be addressed," added Theroux. "A thirteen year old kid does not want to see drunken Tony."

Yay! Okay, so I was reading the Spider-Punk comics recently, and I found out that in the comics, Hobie knows both Kamala Khan and Riri Williams, and they’re his band mates. And I know you most likely won’t incorporate into the story (nor do you have to of course), but I just find the idea of Hobie meeting Kamala and Riri (from 727) and being baffled about how different they are to his home’s versions of them (more likely Kamala, cause she’s just a sweet bundle of sunshine).

It’ll also be interesting to see the characters from Earth 727 react to the fact that the designation of “Earth 616” is wrong, and is actually Earth-199999.

I also bet their gonna question Miguel and the Society about where they were when all these other Multiversal threats appeared (and were thankfully defeated), like Wanda and Infinity Ultron (but mostly Infinity Ultron).

I feel like Miguel is also going to object to them trying to change their “canon” events. But then, why would the Watcher bring all of them there, y’know? Unless it was to show the other spiders (and Miguel especially) that the whole “canon” defense is a bunch of crap, and was just his way of dealing with his grief (they’re gonna have a field day with his backstory I tell ya). Not to mention to bring them all together to show them how big of a threat Kang and his variants are, and to help each other stop these smaller threats in their way, like Thanos, Arthur Harrow, Gorr, fucking Tiamet emerging from the planets core and destroying Earth (the society is gonna lose their minds learning about the realms outside the Spiderverse and all of this wild stuff).

I also talked previously about the theory that glitching is caused by technology rather than just being in a different dimension, while using magic, a thing that’s been around since the beginning and is more natural (rather than tech which is “created” in a sense) prevents glitching. And since it’s gonna be a bit until we get Beyond the Spiderverse and that whole explanation, it could be a good explanation in regards to why the MCU characters don’t glitch when they went to other universes (Strange and America in MoM, Multiverse Guardians when fighting Infinity Ultron, No Way Home). Another idea I had was that maybe what’s causing the deterioration of the Spiderverse is the tech itself, because it’s not natural. And by jumping from universe to universe using the watches and the colliders, it’s breaking the integrity of the spaces between dimensions that prevent incursions from happening (if that makes sense).

This is already getting to be a bit long, so I’ll just end it with this (but expect more from me in the future lol): Sam and Bucky are going to hate meeting even more Peter Parker variants 😂 they already have to deal with one

I went to go see Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness mostly on a whim and I...do not think I enjoyed that experience.

well, it is always kind of neat to see a film opening day at the theatre because you tend to get audience responses, which is always fun, and I haven’t had an opening day experience since...probably TROS, because I very seldom go to the movie theatre.

(Or the fact I’m having a delayed panic attack for unrelated reasons, I just had an experience at the theatre that stepped hard on one of my panic triggers that I go to a lot of trouble to avoid dealing with.)

eta: I’m happy to talk about specifics if anyone has questions or want to know if XYZ showed up in the film or anything; just send an ask and I’ll spoiler-tag the heck out of my response.

spoilers below the break -- a few specifics but the more I think about it the more unhappy I am.

The movie definitely did have moments I liked, but in general I’m feeling really unsettled and more unhappy the more I think about it -- this feels like a betrayal of the Wanda we’ve been seeing from Age of Ultron forwards, with a side of “women are batshit about kids amiright?”  Any time you have an ending that makes you wonder “wow, then why did we bother having the previous thirty films/shows?” it’s uh. not ideal. to say the least.

definitely understand now why I kept seeing headlines about “WandaVision fans will HATE THIS MOVIE!” lolsob

also I’m tetchy about multiverses in general -- I love them but I actually really hate the way the MCU (and tbh comics in general) tend to do them, and this wasn’t an exception.  (Also I’m weirded out by the MCU now being canonically labeled Earth-616 since there...already...is...an Earth-616 in the comics and the MCU is not it?  But whatever, it probably would have been unwieldy to say “yours is Earth-199999,” which I believe is the comics designation for the MCU ‘verse.)  this one did the Loki and NWH thing where characters only made sense if you had knowledge external to the MCU, which -- for years the MCU’s strength has been that the less you know about the comics (or other films, cartoons, etc.) the better off you are as a viewer and every time they veer away from that I think it weakens whatever project it happens in.

I did like (main timeline) Stephen Strange a lot in this movie -- he’s an interesting one. And I liked that Wong didn’t get sidelined, killed off, or replaced as Sorcerer Supreme, which I was worried about.  America Chavez was neat.

But I was very uncomfortable with the mass slaughter of the Illuminati, especially the Captain Carter and Captain Marvel parts, which really felt the most gruesome even though they were all pretty gruesome.  (How often must I see that shield dripping with blood?  Also Steve never had to use a jetpack gripe gripe gripe, but that’s my Captain Carter issues talking, and those issues are for a separate post since it’s not related to this film.)

(also while Wanda was busy killing the Illuminati someone in the back of the theatre went “BUT WHY DIDN’T SHE DO THAT TO THANOS” and yeah, kid, point.)

Also at this point, tbh, the fact that none of the MCU’s multiverse shenanigans are actually interacting with each other is starting to feel like a major flaw.  No, this doesn’t have a Loki tie-in (and it felt like it should have, but that might be the fact I’m a Loki fan talking).  The only real WandaVision tie-in is essentially “now Wanda’s crazy, but about her kids instead of Vision,” and WandaVision was not a multiverse show anyway.  There’s no What If tie-in unless you count Captain Carter, and this is clearly a Peggy Carter from a different universe than that Captain Carter.  Spider-Man: No Way Home is a side note played for laughs.  The nice thing about Phase One and Phase Two of the MCU -- having gone through them lately -- is that you can clearly see that they’re building to something and existing in the same universe, but Phase Four doesn’t feel like that at all and it’s really starting to hurt it.  (Phase Three has other issues but is in that weird transitional point between Phase One/Two and Phase Four.)

also don’t stay for the post-credits scene, it’s not worth it; everyone in the theatre went, “wait, is that IT?” when it rolled.

I would like to stop coming out of Marvel experiences going “wow! I enjoyed AoU way more than that!” which has happened twice in the last few weeks.  (not with Moon Knight, Moon Knight was great.)

anyway...it wasn’t for me and that’s fine, I’m just kind of sad because I love multiverses and the MCU keeps doing them in ways I really dislike.

In the K-verse, does Kara Danvers' adopted family have any relation to Carol Danvers?

Big question! With a deceptively complicated answer...

For a long time, the answer would've been yes - I've mentioned before that I try not to make too many important people be related because I think it detracts a bit from one of the coolest elements of superhero media: that in most cases (billionaires and Chosen One types notwithstanding), these powers and abilities could happen to anyone, and thus the potential is in all of us (or most of us, at least) to be a hero - or a villain. However, it seemed like a natural connection would exist between Kara's adopted family in the Kverse (which has quite a bit of history with SHIELD) and Carol (who helped found the modern incarnation of SWORD). Originally, she was meant to be Jeremiah's younger sister, and the black sheep of the family who tragically "died" in that experimental test flight.

After a lot of thinking about it, though, I don't think this connection can reasonably exist, considering Kara's status as an interdimensional transplant. The fact of the matter is that Eliza, Jeremiah, and Alex Danvers (and Lena and Winn, and maybe a couple unrevealed characters) only exist on Earth-199999 as a "supporting cast" to Kara - in essence, they're only around to accomodate her existence without disrupting the MCU status quo too much. That's why they're with SHIELD - if they weren't there to take her in and smooth out her introduction into this world, she might've taken a very different, much more disruptive path (for example, being the "Super" of this world, crash-landing in Kansas and being raised as Kal-El was, becoming an independent element thoroughly outside SHIELD's purview/control).

So, no, there isn't a blood relation in the modern Kverse. That doesn't mean we won't have some fun interactions, though - the fact remains that Carol and Kara are both blonde powerhouses with very similar sounding names and obvious ties to space, so you can expect some shenanigans around those similarities :P

OH the other question i was going to ask for your opinion was whether you think they’ll create a sony version of these characters or stick with the original? naming MJ Michelle Jones instead of Mary Jane was a legal decision wasn’t it? something to do with sony not owning the characters? i’m not 100% sure and i don’t know how much you would know but i figured if you don’t know, someone will!

Sony definitely owns Mary Jane Watson and all the characters related to Spider-Man IP so there was no legal issue. They were just cowards who didn’t want to upset the comic bros and then realized how beloved Z is so tried so hard to push she was MJ Watson in NWH (like Peter calls her MJ Watson to the college admissions lady) and her last name was said at least 3 times after never being said for two movies.

I don’t know how they’re doing the whole MCU vs Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, cause they seem to be separate universes but I’m not sure what Sony’s end game is, especially they can’t make a good independent Spider-Man film to save their lives (excluding ITSV). NWH basically confirmed Venom is in a clearly different universe than MCU’s Earth-199999 where Tom’s Peter exists. Morbius is supposed to be the same universe as Venom I believe which makes me curious on if they’ll have multiple of the same characters eventually, supposing the MCU and Sony are serious about keeping Spidey in the MCU.

I always find the reaction between MCU Wanda and 616 Wanda in universe to be so interesting because 616 Wanda is a hero who is condemned for falling to her emotions and reacting to trauma poorly but MCU Wanda is still declared a hero, in universe, and is literally treated as "baby girl who can do no wrong" by literally every superhero that meets her. I just find it so interestingly fucked up that 616 doesn't get to be excused the same way MCU does in any regard, including in universe. When she has tried 10,000 times harder than Wendy ever has.

Edit: hey this post was made before MoM and I'm specifically talking about the difference between COMIC Wanda (the REAL 616) and MCU (aka earth 199999 (DESPITE what the movies may tell you)). Because I know people are now going to be confused for a hot sec.

Anyway Im3 was fucking right in not having the mandarin be the legit villain of the film because it was 2013 and having Tony Stark, a rich white American billionaire, have his biggest enemy at the end of his trilogy be "Asia all along" sucks ass. im1 and im2 had asian enemies in it (the "ten rings" in Afghanistan and Vanko, respectively) but they were ultimately about rich people (and usually rich white people) being terrible. Which, in my opinion, was the better option.

In im1 and im2, the main antagonists that pull the plot along are other rich white billionaires who throw money at their problem (Tony) with unethical rich person means. (Hammer hires Vanko with the intention of using him as a way to get to Tony because he's petty as well as using him to further his own military business by selling Vankos inventions under his name) (Stane makes shady deals and puts Tony's weapons up on the black market (which, by the way, what happened to Wanda and Pietro was either a result of Stane's shady deals that Tony was unaware of (Tony was also almost blown up by a Stark branded missile! That he DEFINITELY did not sell! He made the arc reactor so that the shrapnel in his heart wouldn't tear it to shreds!), or US military shittyness, something that Tony was uneducated on, learned about, and immediately, as in literally the second he could, when he was literally supposed to still be in a wheelchair, called a in-person press conference and shut down his weapons program, and immediately became one of the most anti-military characters in the MCU (like in the avengers, when he got real angry about being referred to as soldiers).

Killian isn't a good character, he's doesn't have a particular compelling origin story and wasting the foundation of AIM in the MCU on him sucks. Yes. But he's the last in the list of Iron Man villains that make sense in terms of Tony's personal turning over a new leaf. Stane and Hammer (and Vanko to a degree) are exaggerated versions of Tony's own personal flaws, the things he has to keep in check about HIMSELF. And in that sense, Killian is too. Killian is, if looking in a mirror, an exaggerated version of Tony's desire to be acknowledged and accepted by the people he loves, not being able to take rejection well, and being a risk taker, blown out of proportion. (Tony does deeply crave the affection of those he loves but he doesn't think he naturally deserves it. And while he can be reckless it typically starts and ends with himself. The very last thing Tony would do is, say, start human experimentation (on anyone besides himself) on something known to be dangerous). Killian is impulsive, vindictive, dismissive, self-centered and incapable of reflecting on himself in a meaningful way (basically just any "nice guy" guy on Twitter). He got so butthurt about a single night he dedicated the rest of his life to trying to get back at Tony about it (REAL big "nice guy" on Twitter vibes). He's not well written, he's not even that fun. What makes him interesting, though, is that Tony was kinda all of those things too. (Before his time spent with Yinsen, before Iron Man, before the Avengers).

Tony has never been as bad a Stane, or Hammer, or Killian. But thematically their characters are all "this bad thing about Tony pre-Afghanistan taken 12 steps further."

I don't know I'm just saying in my opinion I think it was better for Tony's main villains to be exaggerated caricatures of himself over using the Mandarin. And that they were right to save a character like the real Mandarin for Shang-Chi where they could be explored and used narratively in a proper manner.

Multiverse of Madness Thoughts

I liked it! It’s not my favorite mcu movie or anything but I think it was good. It’s definitely in the top 50%

I was kinda afraid I would hate it if they messed something up (I had high expectations) so I was relieved

Probably the most visually interesting mcu movie so far

Spoilers:

Wanda was a lot more of villain then a lot thought she would be

America Chavez!!! She kinda carried this movie

One of my biggest criticisms might be that they didn’t mention that America is a lesbian. However, her moms were very significant to her storyline (more than I thought they would be after I heard the clip was only about 70 seconds) so I thought that specific part was nice/good representation

I loved doctor strange’s relationships with Wong and America. I didn’t like him after his first movie but I do now

John Krasinski as Reed was surprising since I saw rumors that someone else was cast. I wonder if he’ll be in the FF movie or just this one

He also mentioned his kids to Wanda so maybe the FF movie will have Franklin and Valeria

Wanda’s fights with Captain Marvel and Professor X from Earth-838 should have been harder. It was probably for pacing reasons or something but I think they would have been able to get closer to winning

Are they just getting rid of the Earth-199999 thing? I guess it makes sense for this to be a separate multiverse from the comics but its weird that Mysterio guessed 616 right

So mutants definitely exist somewhere in the multiverse but its unclear how they fit into the main universe still

Maria Rambeau as Captain Marvel was great

I was worried that they were going to mess up Billy and Tommy’s stories (I want them to stay close to the comics) but it was okay

America being on the same team as Billy and Tommy at some point might be a little weird for her after this experience

She literally sided with ultron, who was trying to destroy the world, until she realized "hey, I live in the world" and then clint or Steve or whoever was like "let's make her an avenger!!!" like jfc

Like if they wanted to have a different Wanda from a different universe who's not evil join the mcu in the future, sure, go for it, maybe I'd like her, but the wanda from earth 199999 (NOT 616-fuck you whoever decided to call the mcu that) is just......idek.
