The main problem that I have with Youtubers who attempt to approach media analysis and fandom through theory and academia is that the vast majority aren't academics. Just being in undergrad isn't actually enough, contrary to the thoughts of many. Reading a Wikipedia article and reiterating what one may find in some Google, even Google Scholar, searches. Ideally, these would be topics approached by people involved in academia as a profession, people with doctoral degrees, who can discuss complex topics in a way that is easily understood by the masses. "What is the negotiation between gender and sex in BL?" "How does CMBYN articulate/complicate hierarchal roles within the gay novel?" "Could SnK express an alternative reading of the formerly isolated Japan?" These are complicated questions they attempt to answer in their video essays when they seldom ever understand the theories they employ.

Yes, I understand this can sound elitist, but as a Black afab person who is currently in a doctoral program for literature, there aren't "easy" answers to any of the questions they attempt to pose, and many Youtubers who primarily make long-form video essays lack the life experience and expertise to sufficiently discuss anything. They're usually too set in their thoughts to answer or explore the broader implications of their claims. Defending a dissertation forces you to do this. Forming a committee of experts in various fields and convincing them to aid you in the development of your dissertation forces you to do this. Being in academic and cordial communication with your peers from all over the world in your field forces you to do this. It's not easy to constantly intake new information from various eras and nations (depending on your topic), meld this information into a coherent essay, and continually make edits as you learn new information, thus changing your outlook on things. Also: it's really petty of me, but it's also incredibly annoying to grade poorly researched undergrad essays who, after some prompting in office hours, say they got these ideas on books, movies, and shows from breadtubers like Somerton, SZ, FD Signifier, or hbomberguy. Cue: me going to watch their videos and realizing they have no idea what they're talking about 88% of the time in terms of theory and application of said theory. Even the ones who frame themselves on being educators in real life, like Signifier, lack any nuance, depth, or media literacy to make a compelling argument if you know even the slightest bit of information. On the bright side, I now know why I've encountered several students with ideologies that are basically conservatism with a veneer of progressivism, or "conservatism in a queer hat."

This concludes my long-winded way of saying "Don't turn to Youtubers for media analysis. You're better off just reading articles by people who have to actually know what they're talking about. The majority of Youtubers (especially the breadtubers) don't have the bandwidth to discuss anything more complex than an episode of Blue's Clues."

I mostly agree, but I'd point to a slightly different problem. I'm hesitant to say that the PhD itself is the deciding factor, but I do think a lot of video essayists are insufficiently prepared.

I'm a big fan of Folding Ideas who does have some formal schooling in film, but I don't think it's that education per se that makes him great. He sets himself apart from other video essayists by actually doing his research and having an in-depth approach to his subjects. He doesn't resort to clickbait, and—here's the key—he often takes months or even a year to work on something.

Honestly, I think that's a big part of it: the hoops most youtubers who want to make a living at it have to jump through involve a lot of clickbait and pandering and a fast production schedule. They don't involve reputable peer review except by the court of shriek-y public opinion on twitter.

They'd like to present themselves as documentary filmmaking (which is essentially what Folding Ideas' longer videos are), but they don't actually live up to any of the usual standards of that either.

I think it can be elitist to say that someone needs to have certain letters after their name, yes, but what really strikes me about your average youtube media analysis type and the fanbase is that they want shortcuts.

Exploring the whole history of the gay novel so that you have enough background to talk about CMBYN means reading quite a few novels. Even if you decide to throw out all past scholarly opinion on the topic (which you shouldn't), if you're going to have a meaningful personal theory, you need to have read a lot of novels first. How can you hope to be the person providing the neat overview of the whole genre if you haven't familiarized yourself widely with said genre, and not just through a summary by someone else? That amount of reading doesn't happen overnight.

The trite, surface-level media analysis online is often from people who want to be hailed as great intellectuals but who aren't willing to put in the years it takes to do all the background reading and to develop their skills in argumentation, writing, etc.

Grad school is a convenient and probably faster way to go about all that, but I think you could do it outside of a formal framework... But you would need to actually do it.

I think it's driven by a bunch of people who were The Smart One in grade school and never learned how to work hard on long-term projects instead of pushing through in a sprint. They're used to relying on being the smartest to cut corners and do things before they get bored, only they probably aren't the smartest anymore anyway, and they mistake being smart at one thing for being smart at all things.

There's a real lack of respect for the entire concept of expertise.

As you already guessed, I would have saved Hange of course!

Like Erwin died when the answer to his lifelong quest was within his grasp, Hange sacrificed themself before they could explore the outside world, quench their thirst for knowledge, help make people's lives better with new discoveries... I'm fascinated by their intelligence & all those amazing qualities that make them one of the best written characters in SNK, personality-wise. They would have been such an asset in the post war SNK universe.

To be perfectly honest, I read the whole manga only once. I often read a random chapter or a few panels online but I still have to read it again (& it's a pain in the ass because I have the Edition Colossale & every book is f*cking heavy lmao). Besides, the French translation is not very good imo, it missed most of the dialogues' subtleties / nuances :((

Still, the manga panels are amazing, Isayama has a real talent for drawing the facial expressions & making us understand what's going on or feel so many emotions without a single word.

But I love the anime, even if a few things missing or changed kinda rub me the wrong way! The animation is insane (Levi's action scenes are always flawless & omg it's part of why I love the short badass so much!). The music is amazing & epic. The VAs are phenomenal (I only watch the Japanese version with French or English subtitles). It's a f*cking great show!

Just a few words about the scene between Eren & Armin in the last episode. As much as I cannot accept Eren's actions, I still felt sorry & sad for him. But the scene with Armin in the manga was so pathetic it almost swept away my sympathy towards him. Thanks Mappa for fixing this scene, making it a real moment of emotion between soulmate friends, & giving Eren a bit of his humanity back.

So anime it is!

A ctivities - What do they like to do with their s/o? How do they spend their free time with them?

Jotaro loves showing you things he’s learned about the ocean or marine biology. He assumes you’re not as interested as him but then begins gushing about it anyway. He loves it even more when you show interest and he goes on about it. You love it too because it’s the most you’re able to get him to talk.

B eauty - What do they admire about their s/o? What do they think is beautiful about them?

Jotaro admires your strength and confidence. Throughout Egypt, you showed him that you could handle yourself and that you’re pretty damn cool. The most beautiful thing about you is probably how you make him feel. Your personality is so radiant.

C omfort - How would they help their s/o when they feel down/have a panic attack etc.?

Whenever you’re down, he tries his best to cheer you up by getting you things you might like or taking you somewhere. His love language is more so “acts of service” rather than touch.

If you’re suffering from something as intense as a panic attack, he’ll go out of his comfort zone and do something like a hug you tightly and tell you that things will be alright while he’s on the phone with a Speed Wagon member for guidance. After the first time, he’ll do his research on what to actually do just in case it happens again.

D reams - How do they picture their future with their s/o?

Jotaro has always wanted a normal life with a normal family. Despite being such a strong stand user, he would probably want to be so far removed from the concept that he wouldn’t even want to have a stand. He would want to be married with a child, like how he is now. Just normal.

He also would like for you to be normal as well. He could tell you were scarred and missed when your smile wasn’t sad.

Jotaro tries very hard to diffuse a situation if he gets into an argument with you. If you’re the one being pushy, he often tries to explain himself, similar to the way he did in the first episode of Diamond Is Unbreakable when Josuke thought he was insulting his hair.

If he’s the one being pushy, he’s normally saying something like “It’s because I do care.” And such. When he’s mad, he won’t avoid you and can forgive you without you apologizing.

When he says sorry, it’s usually sometime later, usually the same day.

G ratitude - How grateful are they in general? Are they aware of what their s/o is doing for them?

Jotaro is always expressing how grateful he is, even if he doesn’t say it. He’s always getting you things and doing his “acts of service” business with gifts.

H onesty - Do they have secrets they hide from their s/o? Or do they share everything?

Jotaro does keep some secrets but he’s poor at hiding them. It’s usually something sweet like not telling you that he finds it cute when you play with your hair or how seductive you sound when “you’re ready for him” and telling him how much you want him.

Sometimes he will hide certain details of a mission from you so that you don’t go and get yourself hurt as a way of protecting you.

I nspiration - Did their s/o change them somehow, or the other way around? Like trying out new things or helped them overcome personal problems?

You definitely caused Jotaro to be a tiny bit more social. When he realized he liked you, it took all of his courage to pursue the smallest actions like just walking by you all the way back in high school.

J ealousy - Do they get jealous easily? How do they deal with it?

Jotaro wants to believe he’s not a jealous person but he constantly feels like you deserve someone better than him. A man that would sweep you off your feet and show out at every opportunity. Of course, he would never let that happen. You belong to him.

K iss - Are they a good kisser? What was the first kiss like?

He wasn’t always a good kisser but he surely became one. He is a bit of a selfish lover and will immediately go for ass grabbing and waist pulling if possible.

Your first kiss with him is a cute memory but thinking back on it, he feels like he ruined it for himself. You kissed him first but he was so in shock that he didn’t kiss back. Unable to move or show any reaction.

L ove Confession - How would they confess to their s/o?

In all honesty, Jotaro wouldn’t be able to confess to you. It was only through being forced to be around you that he couldn’t hide his feelings towards you.

So his version of confessing to you would be by you noticing how differently he treats you compared to other girls at school.

M arriage - Do they want to get married? How do they propose? What would the marriage be like?

Marriage was never on the forefront of his mind when the two of you first started dating. It was only after the 50-day trip that he realized that he couldn’t let you go.

N icknames - What do they call their s/o?

Does “woman” count for a nickname? If so then he likes calling you woman. He usually does it when he’s flushed by you, embarrassed, or turned on. “Babe” is an occasional thing. Perhaps, when he’s feeling needy.

And during sexual acts, he enjoys calling you a princess or anything to signify how much smaller you are than him.

O n Cloud Nine - What are they like when they are in love? Is it obvious for others? How do they express their feelings?

I would like to believe that Star Platinum is symbolic of puberty for Jotaro. When Jotaro is in love and doesn’t realize it, weird things happen to him and all around him. Unexplainable things.

He develops this sense to want to protect his loved ones and when Jotaro realized he loved someone other than his mom, someone that he wasn’t as close to, Star showed up.

P DA - Are they upfront about their relationship? Do they brag with their s/o in front of others? Or are they rather shy to kiss etc. when others are watching?

Jotaro doesn’t really brag about the relationship. He lets you, the only companion he’s seen with, speak for him. There are times when he shows PDA like a head pat, arm around your waist, or letting you give him kisses while others are around. It’s rare for him to initiate on his own with other around BUT he enjoys the risk and will do things in a semi-public setting.

Q uirk - Some random ability they have that’s beneficial in a relationship.

Definitely his stand. Star Platinum is great for a number of mundane activities like fetching you things while you’re in bed during your time of the month or putting you to bed. Sometimes, the two of you would experiment with the inappropriate use of stands in bed.

Star had become your “other boyfriend.” Taking your husband’s place and satisfying you when he wasn’t able to. Other times, Star would be the one to initiate foreplay while Jotaro was getting ready.

He would hold you down with your face to the bed, overstimulating the outside of your clit until you were crying for relief, and then would finger you until Jotaro himself entered the room.

R omance - How romantic are they? What would they do to make their s/o happy? Cliché or rather creative?

Jotaro knows you desire an affectionate relationship but his own personal issues with PDA prevent him to. He tries his best to cheer you up by remembering things you like and really listening to the things you go on about and incorporating that into his own ideas.

S upport - Are they helping their s/o achieve their goals? Do they believe in them?

Joot does anything he’s able to with his resources to support you and asks for nothing in return. He believes you can excel without him but really wants to be a part of your life and what makes you happy.

T hrill - Do they need to try out new things to spice out your relationship? Or do they prefer a certain routine?

Jotaro is pretty content with doing absolutely nothing in the relationship. His feelings for you are unchanging and will always remain. You’re the one that makes suggestions like vacations, new foreplay in the bedroom, and bonding activities. Sometimes, you even inspire him to surprise you with a date night.

U nderstanding - How good do they know their partner? Are they empathetic?

Jotaro has always had a hard time expressing his feelings and understanding the feelings of others. It was only through your guidance that he began to figure out what to do and what things meant. It might take him a little longer but he tries to process what makes you happy, what upsets you, what drives you, etc.

By now, he has gotten a grasp on how your feelings work but still may need some help from time to time.

V alue - How important is the relationship to them? What is it’s worth in comparison to other things in their life?

In high school, before Egypt, Jotaro felt like dating you was just a strong feeling he got during his puberty journey. You were just the girl he had a crush on and then you became the girl he was just dating…until you weren’t. He learned that he loves everything about you. More than just your appearance and how you made his teenage boy hormones go crazy.

You were a strong young lady that he still wanted to protect. You knew him better than anyone else. You were extremely patient with him and everything else that some random groupie at his school didn’t have. He valued the relationship, even if he didn’t say it directly.

W ild Card - A random Fluff Headcanon.

Jotaro likes it very much when you stroke his hair and caress his face. Your soft skin comes in contact with his. He likes to be the little spoon when cuddling or sleeping with his head in your lap or on your chest.

The reason being is that he’s always been this big, strong, intimidating man. People have always been scared of him and girls would fawn over him for all the wrong reasons.

You know who he truly is and can be himself without the need of an “I’m gonna kick your ass” persona.

X OXO - Are they very affectionate? Do they love to kiss and cuddle?

Public? No. Sorry girl. He’ll let you kiss him but don’t expect much replication with civilians around.

But in private, he will give you sweet kisses, and hugs from behind and be his version of what “needy” is.

Y earning - How will they cope when they’re missing their partner?

Typically, when you’re busy or you remove yourself after an argument, he just sinks himself into his work or search. He tries to contact you a lot.

“Hey, I just wanted to check up on you.”

Z eal - Are they willing to go to great lengths for the relationship? If so, what kind of?

Jotaro would literally do ANYTHING for you.

He isn’t a textbook “yandere” but he will do shady things for your own safety like intimidating other people and even threatening them. It’s mostly due to his stunted social growth but you love him anyway.

It's really surreal that SnK has come to an end, both manga and anime. I just came here to tell you that it was a joy to follow all of it through your posts, analysis, podcasts and various memes. (Voice meme was my favourite).

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this series. Now, I only have seen little about that little booklet releasing next year, but will you share your thoughts on the chapter as well like the "old times"?

Hello old friend! Thank you for this lovely message and sorry for the delay in answering. It's been a joy sharing the series with you as well. Yours is a name that always makes me smile 💕💕💕 I do want to share my thoughts on the upcoming chapter! Maybe we can do a short podcast episode for old times sake. The thing is, my absence from tumblr and the series isn't a lack on interest, because even with the series concluded, it feels like there are still things going on that I'd love to talk about. I just can't seem to find the time. I'm still catching up on the Attack on Titan Anniversary Festival that just concluded in Yokohama, Japan, for instance. A small note,

So as SnK is now officially ending, I just have a few thoughts I’d like to share — and in many ways, this is a thank-you note. I feel like this is a place where I can do that and no one will pass judgment on me for feeling so attached to a story (and forgive me, as I’m feeling very sentimental). So thank you, if you decide to read what I’ve written below.

I was just 13 when I watched Attack on Titan for the first time, all the way back in 2013/2014. I remember my friend introducing me to it and I can still remember sitting on my bedroom floor while she showed me the first episode. Back then, it was such a different show. Or at least, we didn’t know that the story which was unfolding before us could only be told for the first time, once. There is no going back. Once you learn the truth of it, you can only return to realize that it was always this way, the signs were all there — you just didn’t know how to read them. What a way to tell a story. What a way to build a character, with that same approach.

It’s been 10 years and my love for SnK has only grown as I have. I was 13 then, I’m almost 23 now, and so much has changed. Within all that change, I’ve always been able to revisit these beloved characters as every new chapter or season released. Despite the horrors they’ve endured, I found comfort in their perseverance. I grew up with them, and so as a new graduate, in which I’m watching my childhood sunsetting before me, it makes it twice as hard to say goodbye to them now. Sure, the manga ended 2 and 1/2 years ago, but there is such a sense of finality now that the anime is coming to a close as well.

SnK is a masterpiece. In my opinion, it is one of the most brilliantly crafted stories I’ve ever read, and trust me — I’ve read a lot. As a writer, I look to stories, in any medium, as a foundation from which to build my own. I will look to SnK over and over again as a model for my own characters, my own arcs, and mostly as a way to answer the question: How do I tell the story I need to tell in a way that matters? Because at the end of the day, no matter how many flaws are littered within the pages of SnK, the story that’s being told matters. It matters to me, and I know it matters to so many of you, too.

In many ways, the characters from SnK are my heroes. Truly, I often find myself wondering if I am acting with empathy and compassion the way Levi does. If I am able to grow and lead the way Jean does. If I’m allowing myself to be me, shamelessly, the way Hange does. I think about my relationship with my brother, and I think about Connie and Sasha — two halves of a whole. I try to love wholly, and fervently like Mikasa. I try not to doubt my abilities, the way I know Armin does so often and shouldn’t. Am I acting before I understand something? Can I hold onto my hope, breathe life into it, the way he embodies it? And every once in a while, I hear Eren in my head — fight. I have so many dreams and I’ll never get them if I cannot fight for them. I won’t live them if I don’t try.

For what will I dedicate my heart?

It has been such a pleasure to experience this story from beginning to end, to watch how it’s evolved and how it’s been received. And it’s been so humbling and beautiful to be able to experience it with all of you. It’s been so much fun.

Here’s to many more years of loving this story, even when the dust on the shelf begins to settle.
