Sometimes I like to point out how often Raubahn delegated secret operations and investigations to Pipin. How before you even met Pipin, he was already in Ala Mhigo playing spy duty and how he's sent first and foremost into enemy bases for infiltration and capturing efforts (Such as the Castrums/Paglth'an)
He's not just a powerhouse, but uses his smarts and wits where few could see. Raubahn might have been the big face of the Flames, but Pipin was also hard at work in the background of things and taking lead when necessary.
Bonus Points: You ever wonder how in the midst of the bloody banquet how he happened to get past all of those Brass Blades and saved Alphinaud from his gaol? AND snuck him outside the city during the chaos of them being everywhere searching for Scions? Then later on investigated and found out about the “poison” sleeping potion they had given Nanamo?

Stevetony Weekly - February 25 - Week 8
Tumblr media
I read so many fics this week! Take a look and make sure to leave a comment & kudos for the fic you’ve read!
*
Make It Rain by copperbadge
Steve Rogers is SO DONE with global warming.
Thems by copperbadge
Steve discovers a secret simulation on the game server.
Lead and I'll Follow by Woad
Under orders, Captain Rogers prepares for a gala by taking dance lessons. He's not sure how Fury persuaded Adventurer Tony Stark to give said lessons, though.
For comm prompt: For one night, Steve and Tony try to forget there's a war going on as they slow dance, alone in a cozy room.
acceptable alien behaviours by brucewaynery
Tony stares in disbelief as their golden retriever puppy, Dodger, flies, honest-to-god flies towards Loki.
(aliens)
The Great American Road Trip by SmileAndASong
“You know, when you said you were going to take me on a romantic vacation, I sort of thought the transportation was going to be…well, not this,” Tony said, gawking at the monstrous RV in front of him because, wow, it sure was a sight to behold and definitely not in a good way.
[AKA, Steve coerces Tony into taking a cross-country road trip]
jock-speak by brucewaynery
Steve, as with everything, dances gracefully, with the control and precision Tony's seen on the football pitch. It's enchanting, watching him fly across the dance floor, oblivious to the world, Tony's never been more in love.
(slow dancing, happy steve bingo)
ruining my plans by tinystark616
Steve likes to wake up in the morning and go for a run. This morning, Tony has other ideas.
Relinquish command by Arwen88
Steve comes back after a mission guilt-ridden and needs Tony to help him out clear his mind.
lay your pretty head down by meidui
He knows this is what vulnerability looks like with Steve: rolling over and showing him where it hurts, letting Tony look past the polite, authoritative demeanor he puts on around everyone else and admitting where he's soft and weak and craves affection.
Peaches for Daddy by darefanny
”Jesus”, Tony said, obviously impressed. ”Okay. What do you want, sweetheart?”
Steve didn’t miss a beat. He let Tony’s finger fall out of his mouth, kissing the side of his palm instead.
”I want daddy to take care of me”, he said, staring at Tony from under his long lashes.
Don't You Want Me? by KandiSheek
Steve and Tony's relationship is new enough that they're still keeping it under wraps. Which is why it's supremely awkward when Tony has to fend off Steve's drunken advances in front of the rest of the team. Apparently their relationship isn't going to be a secret for long.
Headfirst Into Danger by KandiSheek
Steve takes a bullet for Tony. Tony doesn't appreciate it in the slightest.
Team Building Activities by valtyr
Fury's a beautiful princess. Clint's plotting a Communist revolution. Rhodey's not sexy. Wall-E's not a documentary. Clint's not gay but he does give a great blowjob. This fic is not an AU.
I Know There is Comfort Where We Overlap by jellybeanforest
As a relic of a bygone era, Steve struggles with feelings of isolation and severe depression made worse by his recent breakup with Jan Pym. He secretly hooks up with random strangers chasing a sense of connection with someone, anyone. Things are going (not) well when he and fellow Ultimate, Iron Man, are tasked with infiltrating a Thai resort serving as a front for illegal arms dealing. Only catch: They must go undercover as a married couple on their honeymoon.

blue oleander by starvels (dinosaur) (@starvels) (Ults | Mature | Graphic Depictions Of Violence | 3,136 words)
Summary: It's been seven years since Earth was destroyed. What remains of humanity, of the superhero community, is on a ship, half-lost in the deep of space. But they're not alone. And what crawls through the portals in the aft cargo bay, day after day, is about as human as Steve feels anymore.
near-death cliché by meidui (MCU | Teen And Up Audiences | No Archive Warnings Apply | 860 words)

FIC REC WEEK 5 - FLUFF
jock-speak by brucewaynery
Pairing: Steve/Tony Rating: G Words: 1,017 Tags: High School AU, Slow Dancing, Friends to Lovers
Summary: Steve, as with everything, dances gracefully, with the control and precision Tony's seen on the football pitch. It's enchanting, watching him fly across the dance floor, oblivious to the world, Tony's never been more in love.
Reasons why I love it: I have the sudden urge to see Steve do ballet with Nat. This fic is so sweet, I can see it like a little movie in my head when I read it. They're both such dorks, it's adorable. And the last two sentences always make me chuckle. Go and check this one out, it's wonderful!
The Great American Road Trip by SmileAndASong
Pairing: Steve/Tony Rating: T Words: 4,030 Tags: Road Trip, Dramatic Tony, Camping
Summary: “You know, when you said you were going to take me on a romantic vacation, I sort of thought the transportation was going to be…well, not this,” Tony said, gawking at the monstrous RV in front of him because, wow, it sure was a sight to behold and definitely not in a good way. AKA, Steve coerces Tony into taking a cross-country road trip
Reasons why I love it: TONY NAMED AN ISLAND AFTER STEVE, I AM DYING. Sorry, this has almost nothing to do with the rest of the fic, but it's something that's lingered in my mind since I read this. I really love Tony's city boy mindset clashing with Steve's outdoorsy adventures, especially when the ending is this tooth-rottingly sweet. It's amazing, and I bet you'll love it just as much as I did!
Raindrops Like Roses by Auggusst
Pairing: Steve/Tony Rating: E Words: 4,000 Tags: Rainy Days, Power Outage, Couch Sex
Summary: When the power in their apartment goes out on a rainy day, Steve and Tony reminisce about their chance meeting a few years ago and show each other a little TLC on the couch. Who knew power outages could be so romantic and sexy?
Reasons why I love it: I love that feeling of being inside watching the rain patter against the window, and this fic gives me that exact same feeling. It shows Tony and Steve's love for each other in quiet and subtle ways, which works really well for the setting. Even the smutty parts are fluffy as hell, it's great. I love this one, please go and check it out for yourself!
acceptable alien behaviours by brucewaynery
Pairing: Steve/Tony Rating: G Words: 592 Tags: Established Relationship, Humor, Aliens
Summary: Tony stares in disbelief as their golden retriever puppy, Dodger, flies, honest-to-god flies towards Loki.
Reasons why I love it: Behold – Dodger the alien dog. This fic is the perfect little pick-me-up if you're feeling down, short and sweet and hilarious. Loki and Dodger's interaction cracks me up every time. Give it a read, I bet you'll love it just as much as I do!
Lead and I'll Follow by Woad
Pairing: Steve/Tony Rating: M Words: 2,380 Tags: World War II, Dancing, Marvel Noir
Summary: Under orders, Captain Rogers prepares for a gala by taking dance lessons. He's not sure how Fury persuaded Adventurer Tony Stark to give said lessons, though.
Reasons why I love it: I never knew that I needed a fic about Marvel Noir Tony teaching Steve to dance, but I'm so glad I found this one. It's equal parts fluffy and hot, and I love how Steve's confidence grows as soon as he figures out Tony's motivations. This fic is great, and I hope you give it a shot!

2021 Cap-Iron Man Exchange Gifts unveiled on December 29
Tumblr media
It’s the sixth day of reveals! Each day we will be revealing gifts created by 2021 Cap-Iron Man Holiday Exchange and Community Gifts event participants. The gifts will remain anonymous until January 5, giving everyone a chance to enjoy the works and guess the identities of creators. (Remember, if you've got a work in the collection, please remain anonymous until after creator reveals!) Here are today’s gifts!
★ as if we'd never left for frostfall (616, 4589 words)
Steve's been alone in his town for quite some time; his lover disappeared, possibly even left, after he was infected with lycanthropy over a decade ago, and the townspeople hardly want him around. But he's useful to them, at least, and when a string of thefts along the northern building strike fear into the hearts of the townspeople, he takes initiative and investigates. He's not prepared for what he finds.
★ as long as you love me so for drunkonwriting (MCU, 1345 words)
“For what it’s worth, this is not how I imagined our first Christmas going,” Steve groans from where he’s sitting on the floor. It’s hard wood, and Tony knows it simply cannot be comfortable sitting that way. Even super soldiers aren’t immune to backaches, surely, and after the day they’ve both had, Tony wants nothing more than to lay right there beside him, ice and snow and ruined Christmas and failed mission be damned. Or, after a mission goes wrong, Steve and Tony find themselves snowed in at a cabin in the middle of nowhere. On Christmas Eve.
★ His Reward for Cap Iron Man Community (Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, 100 words)
Tony's finally taken Steve down during sparring, besting him. So he claimed his reward.
★ Just like Butter Pecan for Cap Iron Man Community (Avengers Assemble, 100 words)
Thanks to sex wizards (that's apparently a thing, who knew?), Tony now tastes like butter pecan.
★ A Little Confused But He Got the Spirit for DepressingGreenie (MCU, 3298 words)
On their third date, Steve decides to come clean about his lycanthropy. Tony is surprisingly understanding, almost too much so.
★ Love is a Cat-astrophe for Cap Iron Man Community (MCU, 3242 words)
There were plenty of reasons for him and Tony not to be together. Steve just never expected to be cockblocked by a cat.
★ A Man in her Own Right for Cap Iron Man Community (3490, 1552 words)
Natasha Stark wakes and she's a man! What will her husband, Steve, think?
★ [Podfic] A Stake in This Ground by Woad for gottalovev (1872, 1:06:31 minutes)
Granted, Tony gets off to a bumpy start in Timely, but he's still surprised when Rogers arrests him for drunk and disorderly behavior.
★ Slant Rhyme for Missy_dee811 (616, 5775 words)
Steve gave up on finding answers and closure regarding Civil War when he learned that Tony had erased his memories of the past year. Now that alien tech has created a psychic link between them, Steve finds that even direct access to Tony’s consciousness won’t illuminate what Tony does remember, because he’s actively trying to block Steve from everything that crosses his mind. Still, Steve discovers plenty of unexpected thoughts and feelings in Tony’s head…
★ What Do The Lonely Do At Christmas? for Cap Iron Man Community (MCU, 5118 words and art)
The first Christmas after Siberia, and Tony was already having a hard time of it - even before he was blindsided by some anonymous lowlife. But that's not even the worst part. The worst part is who comes to his rescue.
★ Whoops... Sorry for Cap Iron Man Community (MCU, 2700 words)
The 5 times Steve broke something to get Tony’s attention, and the one time he did it by accident.
To check out all of this year’s gifts (so far!), head over to the 2021 Captain America/Iron Man Holiday Exchange AO3 Collection. When your gift is revealed, please be sure to comment and thank your gifter! If you’re the creator of a gift that’s now been revealed, you can reply to any comments and stay anonymous — AO3 will automatically show you as   "Anonymous Author" until the creator reveals. Finally, you may want to change the publication date of your work to today’s date so that it shows up at the top of AO3's feeds. Fantasy Guide to Hair
Tumblr media
Hair is one of the facets of the characters' look as well as worldbuilding. Hair has always been important to many cultures such as the Vikings and Native Americans. So here is the Fantasy Guide to hair @cat-inthe-corner
Hairstyles
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I am always asked what styles historical women wore. The truth is we can't exactly know for sure. Besides, if you spend your time describing a character's hairdo you will put your audience to sleep. Really you can paint a vague picture for your audience and that'll do.
Down and unadorned: Girls of every class wore their hair down to show they were unwed. Married women always wore their hair up and covered it. Only prostitutes wore their hair down and uncovered.
Braid/Plait: Braids were an easy tidy away hair. Braids were pinned to the head and set under headdresses. Braids lasted longer that any other hairstyle.
Wigs: Some historical women and men wore wigs. Wigs were seen as cleaner and easier to maintain. The Egyptians shaved their heads and wore wigs. The Renaissance revived wigs. Wigs were rather gross and most wearers carried long pins to scratch their heads.
Bob: The humble bob was a popular haircut throughout the Mediaeval period for men. Bobs came back into fashion in the 20s for women seen as a daring rebellion against the patriarchy.
Historical Hair Care
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Women have been obsessed with having perfect hair for centuries. Women have always sought to find anything to help make their hair smoother, curlier, bigger and shinier.
The Egyptians often used castor oil and almond oil on their hair. It smoothed their hair as well as protected it. The Egyptians were rather into wigs and to keep them smelling fresh, they melted soft perfumed wax comes onto the wigs.
Tudor and Elizabethan women would use animal fat or lard in their hair. It would keep the hair in the shape it was teased into (historical hairspray) as well as smooth it. However, it drew lice and flies and must have smelt ghastly after a few days.
Assyrian women and men curled their hair by using hot iron bars and oil. Sound familiar? This was the predecessor of the curling iron (or as I call it-that-very-hot-stick-my-sister-leaves-on-the-table).
The Ancient Indians oiled their hair to prevent baldness which is still used today in parts of India.
As hair was not often washed in the 17th & 18th centuries, people turned to powders and pomades. The powder were made of flour and starch to soak up grease from the hair. Pomades were to make the hair smell nicer.
A popular conditioner of the times was made from bacon fat. Since women didn't want to go about smelling like breakfast, the fat was often cut with rosewater or lavender or another scent.
Women would have combed their hair with brushes and lice combs. Most women pre-19th century would keep their hair styled for days or weeks on end. After the 19th century, women began to brush and comb their hair regularly.
Mediaeval women washed their hair with soap made from animal fat mixed with ashes and vinegar.
Victorian/Edwardian women often washed their hair with eggwhites to get shinier hair. The Empress Sisi famously had a head of gorgeous hair which she was obsessed with. “Every three weeks it was washed with raw eggs and brandy, a procedure which took an entire day, including drying. After washing her hair, the Empress would don a long, waterproof silk dressing gown and walk up and down until her hair dried.”- Ludwig Merkle.
Dye
Tumblr media
Hair was dyed throughout history just like it is today. Some colours were easily found, some not.
Blonde hair was the most desirable colour for Mediaeval/Renaissance women. Blonde hair was often obtained by using a concoction of olive oil, white wine, alum. Other ways of obtaining blonde locks involved using saffron, tumeric and skins of onions. It could also be washed with limes and dried in the sun.
Red hair was not a popular hair colour in mediaeval times but it became popular after Elizabeth I. The Romans often scalped Celts to make wigs from their hair. Red hair could be made from using Henna which is orange in colour.
Brown hair can be obtained by mixing indigo and henna. It is not permanent but can be after a few rinses. This is likely what Sansa Stark is currently using in ASOIAF. (Green hair like Wylla Manderly's would be obtained by either fucking up a dye job or mixing the blonde with blue.)
Blue hair if you want to go wild could likely be made from woad leaves and blackcurrants skins.
Accessories & Headresses
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pins: Most hair pins looked rather like pens. Hair would be wrapped about it and then pinned up on the head of the wearer, really not so different to bobby pins today. Pins were a favourite gift to give women of most time often made of wood, ivory, metal and were worn by ladies of all classes.
Ribbon: Ribbons were used by both classes. Thin strips of material would be woven through the hair in order to keep it neat as well as look great. Upper classes had the ribbons made of silk and other fine fabrics.
Feathers: Feathers were worn in all time periods. Elaborate towering do's were often graced with plumes to add extra height.
Headbands: Headbands have been about for years throughout most of civilization. From slim ribbons across brows to jewelled headbands of the 20s, headbands were a simple yet classic look.

Chapter 4
Chapter 5
Chapter 6
Chapter 7 <~ You are Here
Tumblr media
You are standing in the middle of the pasta isle at the grocery store when your cell phone goes off. It's that distinctive ping of an unknown number texting you. You sigh, roll your eyes, and wonder what is the easiest possible thing that you can make for dinner that night. In the past six days your workload has tripled. June and Em are on a much needed vacation and Nick is still unconscious at the hospital.
You know that because you called right before you left to go grocery shopping. You also called first thing this morning, and last night, and the morning before, and the night before that. You have called the hospital at least twice a day for the past thirty-seven days. You got the exact same information.
“Officer Jakoby is still in an induced coma, and he is not ready to be seen by friends or family.”
It was maddening.
Your phone goes off again and you set a jar of premade sauce back on the shelf. Your stomach isn't feeling red sauce. It isn't feeling pasta. Or oranges. Or any one of a thousand other things you were totally down for eating. You hadn't been hungry since the night part of LA went up in magical flames. Since Nick had been hospitalized.
With a sigh you eased into the snack isle. Is a bag of chips an acceptable replacement for dinner? Probably not, but you've had take out for the past two weeks and absolutely none of it has filled the steady, continuing ache in your heart.
Your phone goes off again.
“What?” you snarl loud enough to make the old lady with a basket full of frozen dinners blink with bewilderment. “Sorry. Not you.”
You pull your phone out and waive it at her. She doesn't look convinced, and doubles her speed to get into the next isle.
With a few swipes you bring up your new messages.
“This is Jessica, the Head Nurse at the Intensive Care Unit at the UCLA Medical Center.” The first message reads.
Your heard pounds so hard in your chest that your vision goes a little hazy. You grip your phone tightly enough to make the screen rainbow with protest.
“Nick Jakoby has achieved a state of continuing consciousness. One of my nurses made the mistake of telling him that you had stopped by.”
That hazy feeling turns to ash. You had wanted to see him yourself, to let him know what had gone on, and why you hadn't talked to him in six, not seven, months.  He must be angry, furious.
The third message is brief, and comes across as a little mad. “In order to keep him in bed, I promised him you would come see him tonight. Do not make me a liar.”
You desert your cart, and take the shortest possible trip to the hospital that you have ever taken. Which is impressive, considering all the times you driven up there in the past month, just in case something had happened between your morning and evening check-ins.
You don't stop at the front desk, you know where you are going. The elevator doors close as you turn the corner, and the wait for the next ones seems like an eternity. The moment the doors whoosh open, you surge inside hitting the buttons for the ICU floor. You don't even wait. You ht the close-door button and watch your reflection stare back at you as the lift starts to rise.
What are you going to say? Should you have gotten balloons? Flowers? A stuffed animal? Would he even be allowed those things? Did he want them from you? Did he want to see you to make up or to have a final talk? In the twenty-eight seconds that it takes to get to your floor, your mind plays out you greatest hopes and worst fears in a strange, overlapping loop that leaves you feeling a little lightheaded.
Though maybe that has something to do with the fact that you haven't eaten well in a month.
Your clothes don't fit right, you think as you tug at the fabric. You should have gone home to change. You were wearing your comfy clothes to go shopping. The fabric weird. Then you realize its not the fabric, its your own skin. You are so nervous that your skin feels like an electric current is running through it. With a huff you roll your shoulders, trying to settle your nerves. It doesn't help.
The doors slide open and as fast as you got into the elevator, you hesitate to get out. This could go wrong. What if his mother is there? His partner? What about Johnassen, the jerk who broke his phone so long ago?
It doesn't matter you tell yourself as you take that first step off the elevator. All that matters is he's awake. You'll be able to see him with your own eyes.
A stern looking woman with stark gray curls looks up from a desk as you approach. She tilts her head and inspects you.
“For Jakoby?” she asks like she already knows the answer. “Follow me.”
Your heart is in your ears as you follow in the steps of her worn out shoes. She swipes her badge, taking you through a set of secure double doors. The sounds of the hospital change. The ICU is bereft of human noises, but it isn't quiet. You can hear televisions on a half a dozen channels turned down low, doing what they could to preoccupy patients who were in layers of pain. The sound of breathing machines hiss and whirl. A man in green scrubs wheels supplies down the hall. There's no happy, warm chatter. Just a strange sense of desolation and pain.
You do not like it here, and you can't imagine Nick here. Nick, with his warm laugh and kindness. Nick who kisses you like the universe exists in your lips. You want to scoop him up and take him away.
The nurse stops outside of a door at the end of the hall.
“They are quarantined behind a see through partition,” she tells you in the kind of no-nonsense voice that must come from years in her work. “Do not attempt to breech this partition.”
She holds out a long medical gown. Confused, you shoved your arms into the sleeves. She spins you, and starts to tie it up, and then she puts another one on your back, spinning you again so she can tie it in the front. She hands you a cap, and a mask, and you put them both on as she helps your feet into medical grade booties.
“How dangerous is it?” You ask as she holds up a pair of gloves to slip on your hands.
“Unknown,” she tucks the end of the gloves over the wristband of the double set of gowns. “But you saw the news, you know where they were. Better safe than sorry.”
She types a number into the key pad. “You get ten minutes. No more, no less. I'm not being mean, but we need to minimize any chance of exposure.”
You nod your understanding. Ten minutes isn't much time, but you'll make the most of it.
“There are armed men in there,” she finally says. “Don't do anything to make them think you are a threat.”
It's the last bit of advice she gives you before the pad turns green and the door is opened.
The room is long, white, and empty save for what looks like a box made out of hanging plastic. Only a few of the lights are on, casting half the room in evening darkness. There are several beds, but only one of them is occupied. The long, lean body of a black male is visible beneath the harsh lighting. Three other people stand guard, dressed from head to toe, AR-15 clutched in their hands. The door closes behind you.
For a moment you stand there, frozen and unsure. A little, ugly thought makes you wonder if this is some weird trick. Then you hear your name.
Your eyes are drown to the shape of a man sitting in a chair. You hadn't noticed him at first because the dark lines of his body blend a little too easily with the pseudo darkness on that side of the room. But now that you've seen him, you can't pull your gaze away.
Nick. You'd know the shape of him anywhere. The broad, strong line of his shoulders stands guardian against the pitch black behind him. There's a blanket across his legs, and an IV in his arm.
“It's you,” he says softly, disbelieving.
“Nick.” You take one step, and then another, and before you know it your legs are carrying you across the room. You almost forget the plastic. When you foot hits it, you're startled. The guards watch you with cold glares. “Sorry.”
And once you start saying it, you can't stop. Over and over again you apologize. You don't realize you are crying until you taste the hot salt of your own tears. You are sorry you didn't call him. You are sorry you left. You are sorry you didn't answer him back. You are sorry for everything you ever did in the last six months because none of those things was going to him. You sink to your knees at the edge of the partition, the tears making it impossible to speak.
He says your name again, so soft you wonder if you dreamed it. You look up, and he's shaking his head.
“Please, don't cry.”
Slowly, unsteadily, he gets up. He doesn't look at you as he pulls the chair from one side of the plastic sheet box to the other. Right in front of you, he plops the chair down, and then lowers himself into it. His staccato motions belie how hurt he must still be.
The pair of you are silent as you look one another over. You see the bruises beneath his woad blue spots; purple and yellow and, in some places, black. You see the stitches in his arm, the thick swelling of his hands. The skin around his cheeks is slack with the lack of food he's gotten in the past month. But his eyes, those gorgeous eyes that are yellow and red and orange all at once, they are filled with pain that has nothing to do with being thrown half a football field by a magical explosion.
“You're here,” he says, his voice soft. “I thought-” He stop short, shrugging, and then wincing.
“I know,” you tell him. While you aren't sure of the exact words he must have thought, you know that it couldn't have been good.
“Why?” he asks.
You open your mouth to tell him, but the words wont come. You remember Elizabeth, his mother, and the way she had looked at you. You could tell him everything, but what good would that do? He might get angry at his mother, it might cause some kind of rift between them and how many people did Nick really have who cared that much for his safety? Not nearly enough, you think as you take in injuries you hadn't noticed before.
Instead you shrug. You can't bring yourself to lie, but you can't bring yourself to tell him the truth either, no matter how much it's burned inside of you. You turn the words that she said over in your mind, pulling an answer from them without revealing their source.
“You got hurt because you were with me.” Your voice cracks as you say it.
His eyes close and his shoulders sag. His body leans forward. You think he's about to slide out of the chair. The pair of you kneel on the floor, staring at one another. Emotions that you don't think have ever been named whirl through you. You want to touch him, you want to hold him, you want to vanish together into the night.
“No,” he said shaking his head. “No. You were just the excuse. When they saw me-” he cuts off, coughs, and shakes. “They'd already decided what they were going to do.”
He looks away. You can tell that there's more to say, that he's struggling. Rather than push you give him a moment. He deserves that at the very least.
“It wont happen again,” he says.
“Why not?”
He opens his palm, I can't see anything there, but he must because he's staring down at it like it's something special.
“I can't talk about a lot that happened that night,” he says. “I want to, I want to tell you everything but...I can't.”
You shake your head. “I just need to know you are safe.”
“I think I am. I mean-I gotta tell you, it was not a normal night. I was...I was blooded.”
Your eyes go wide. You can't help but stare at his lips. He smirks.
“It'll take a while for the tusks to grow. But I don't need to file them anymore.”
You sit back on your heels. “Are you okay with that?”
He shrugs. “I guess that depends.”
“On what?” you ask.
He takes a deep breath and looks at you. It's a long look, a scared and hopeful one. It's like he's weighing a thousand dreams as he watches you and all you can do is wait.
“I thought I was getting over you,” he finally says. “It'd been months. Long months. Really, really long months. My mom even set me up on a couple dates with some unblooded girls from other states.”
Your stomach twists.
“Yeah?” you say, hoping that he's not about to tell you that he has moved on and this whole thing was about him saying goodbye.
“They were nice, but they...they didn't understand me. They didn't like what I do. They didn't like my jokes and they all thought Alaska is stupid.” The two of you laugh and it feels so good. He shifts his position until the two of you are nearly the same height. “I wasn't falling for someone else but I was pretending really hard like I was getting over you.”
You nod, you know what he means. You'd been going through all the motions, acting like you were moving forward when all you were doing was playing the role and hoping.
“I was going to come see you,” he said. “As soon as my shift was over that night. I was going to go right to your apartment. Everyone said I shouldn't because I'd just get hurt, but I thought that it would be worth it. I just..”
Slowly he reached into the blanket still twisted around his legs. His thick, injured fingers shook with pain as he pushed the fabric around.
“Where-hold on-it's here, I swear.”
Your heart, which has already gone through far too much, pounds all over again. Your mouth goes dry.
“Nick...”
“I almost died you know,” he says as he lifts a corner, continues to look. There's a little wetness on his brow, and you wonder if it's fear, nerves, or pain that's put it there. “And not just once. I almost died like four times.”
One of the guards cleared their throats.
“I know,” Nick said, holding up his free hand. “I know. I can't tell her anything. But you only have to look at me to see that it happened.” He went still, and bowed his head. “I did die.”
It's not even a whisper, there's no sound. It's a breath of words that you are sure the guards couldn't hear. You pounding heart turns to ice in your chest.
“What?”
But he doesn't say it again. Instead he looks up at you and his eyes are bright with a hundred emotions. “And all I could think about, was you.”
He holds out his hand. Nested there is a black velvet box. Carefully, he opens it, revealing a ring. It's made of two metals, platinum and rose gold, twisted around one another to form a very simple braid, and right there at the center is a stone in the exact same shade of blue as his spots.
“All  I thought about every day has been you,” he is saying when your ears start to work again. “And I don't want to ever have to worry again.”
You swallow twice before you can speak. “Are you proposing?”
You aren't sure if he's blushing, but his ears twitch. “Only if you're saying yes.”
“You have to ask,” you say. “You have to...ask.”
“Is it a spell? A human thing?” he says.
You shrug, because it kind of is, but mostly you just need to time to stop your thoughts from making such a commotion in your head. There are a hundred ways this could go wrong, a thousand even, but even so-
He says your name and you find that he's shifted yet again, down on one knee in front of you. “Will you marry me?”

Preferred organizations: - Equal Justice Initiative - Ghetto Film School - National Immigration Law Center - St. Jude Children's Research Hospital - World Central Kitchen (See the list of approved organizations here)
Will create works that contain: Tropes/elements: character studies, angst, soulmates, slow burn, mutual or one-sided pining, self-sacrifice, amnesia, time travel, reincarnation, fake relationship, relationship of convenience, hurt/comfort, de-aging, dream world, presumed dead, temporary or permanent death, post-breakup, getting together, getting back together, post-Infinity War to post-Endgame, substance abuse and recovery, grief/mourning, parental/child and mentor/mentee relationships, friendship over the years, Tony’s family issues, dark Steve, pre-serum Steve AUs: canon-divergent (I like sticking to canon as much as possible, though), mafia/gangster, magic, sports, non-powered, high school or college, supernatural, horror, sci-fi, etc. I love AUs! For writing, I tend to focus on one specific moment or a series of small moments, feelings, and relationships more than action-packed plots.
Will not create works that contain: I’m up for most things except some extreme kinks, incest, mpreg, infidelity, adult/minor romantic relationships, and partner abuse in a ship. I don’t have any triggers. If you want me to elaborate on my do-not-wants or have a trope, kink, or plot point that you’re not sure I’ll be okay with, please contact me beforehand. Betaing: A/B/O, D/S, OOC, PWPs, OCs, self-inserts, tooth-rotting fluff without plot, Darcy-centric fics, unbalanced CW plots. I’m not that fond of coffeeshop, apocalypse, zombie, and vampire AUs, but I can help with them Writing: A/B/O, D/S, poly, comedy, complicated plots, crack, 100% pure fluff/domestic plots, kidfic (unless it’s canon), AUs that require a lot of specific knowledge (e.g., historical AUs or military AUs), reality TV AU, zombie AU, animal transformation, unbalanced CW plots, Hydra Steve

Auction ID: 1280
Will create works for the following relationships: Steve Rogers/Tony Stark - AvAc, MCU, Noir Bucky Barnes/Sam Wilson - MCU James "Rhodey" Rhodes & Tony Stark - MCU Carol Danvers/Maria Rambeau - MCU James "Rhodey" Rhodes/Sam Wilson - MCU Nebula & Tony Stark - MCU Steve Rogers & Natasha Romanov - MCU Natasha Romanov & Tony Stark - MCU Carol Danvers & Nick Fury - MCU Nick Fury & Maria Rambeau - MCU
Work Description: This fic will probably be 1.5–3k. It’s possible that it may end up longer (this was the case with my Stony Trumps Hate and MTH 2018 fics), but I can’t make any promises. It might take me a while to finish it as I’m slow at writing and RL keeps me busy, so please keep that in mind when bidding. MCU is my usual playground overall, but for Steve/Tony specifically, I’ve written Noir and AvAc too. I'm very interested in writing canon-compliant fics or fics set in canon, especially ones that act like snapshots of the characters at a specific time in their lives or a character/relationship study, but I do love AUs as well. I would appreciate it if you gave me several prompts, both general and specific, to choose from as that will increase the likelihood of the story being finished faster and lessen the likelihood of me getting writer’s block. If you have any questions of what I will and won’t write, don’t hesitate to reach out to me!

Work Description: I can help with SPaG/copyediting, pacing, sentence structure, continuity, and America-picking, and I particularly love discussing characterization, world building, plot, and character development. I love character and relationship studies and contemplative pieces that dive deeply into who the characters are and how they feel, but I also like plots that tackle serious issues or big canon points, complex plots, and plots with multiple layers/levels. Turnaround depends on fic length and my schedule. I’m relatively fast, but if something comes up, I’ll let you know immediately. If you need references, I’ve betaed and acted as a sounding board for several writers such as aslightstep, captainshellhead/vibraniumstark, gil-estel, Kiyaar, laireshi, Sineala, and Woad. Notes on relationships: I’m willing to beta some ships along with gen/platonic ones for the fandoms listed above. Notes on characters: There are some characters whom I’m not that fond of or interested in (for example, Darcy Lewis). I’m open to betaing almost anything, provided they follow my wants/DNWs, even with characters I’m less keen about/don’t care for, but feel free to contact me if you have questions about this. Notes on universes: For 616 and Ults, I’ll only do an AU or a story that doesn’t rely heavily on canon events. I’ve only watched a handful of AA episodes. I’m open to Noir, AvAc, 3490, EMH, AA, and 1872 for Steve/Tony as well.

616 Identity Reveal Reclist
hypothetically... by Mizzy (M) Steve accidentally finds out that Tony Stark is Iron Man. He methodically and hypothetically works through what to do about it.
Hilarious! I love this light-hearted fic.
Masked and Anonymous by panickyintheuk (E) Steve drops in on Avengers benefactor Mr. Stark, but it seems that Mr. Stark was expecting him.
The most amazing coincidence ever results in funny and adorable proceedings.
Love Calls You By Your Name by laireshi (T) Steve's boyfriend, Tony Stark, doesn't come home after Iron Man gets hurt when protecting Steve.
Hurt/comfort and secret identities go together like coffee and donuts and this fic is such a prime example of how good the combination is!
baby doll I recognize you're a hideous thing inside by grue (T) "It's probably a prank," Tony says. He's got his suit on and is taking scans, he doesn't really think this is a prank, but the dear Captain looks like he's going to sneeze blood in his fury so downplaying is the way to go. "It's a threat," Steve says. He's got that glare dialled up to eleven. Tony is pretty happy that it's not directed at him this time.
If you’re into a dramatic identity reveal that saves the day like I am, this fic is for you!
in the one garden you may call your own by Woad (T)  Steve enlists Tony to help him tell Iron Man how he feels.
Eep, this is so sweet. Secret identity trope + a Cyrano de Bergerac situation is also a classic

PROMPT #1: Crux
"So the Liberator returns," drawled Tibost as she strode into the Hall of the Griffin.
And with that, her homecoming from Dalmasca was complete. None of the other councilmembers spoke so much as a word to her, though Lyse offered a smile; Raubahn was engaged in a terse conversation with Morgana which she had no desire whatsoever to make out; and the others, even Bertliana, stared over at her with an unhealthy mixture of trepidation and disgust.
The meetings resumed, and the sun wheeled overhead until long orange shadows filled the chamber from the western windows. Ashe's bloodshot eyes often strayed to the empty throne. As others spoke and deliberated, she pondered more than once what secrets the Seraph might have deigned to tell her of this very hall, if only she had brought the Lucavi back within her own skin. Though she tried often to convince herself that the thought was one that did not bear thinking about, she nonetheless thought of it for much of the afternoon.
"Grand Steward?" said Lyse pointedly, in the exact tone that she knew was meant to stir her from her reveries.
"Apologies," she replied at once. She swept a lock of her newly regrown hair back from her face, unable to recall whether it had always been so unruly before. "Please, continue."
"About the spate of assaults around entrances to the sewers." Lyse's explanation was a charitable one. "The Resistance has traced at least one of the assailants back to the limestone quarry."
"In the Undercity," Raganfrid added pointedly, as though she needed reminding of a region under her jurisdiction.
She permitted a frown to cross her face, permitted herself to appear lost in thought for a moment longer. She had not met with Stella since her return - and even if she had, she wondered, would the child have thought to divulge such a thing? Were the attacks grave enough for consideration or notice within the Undercity, or were they the sort of behavior only shocking to Ala Mhigans living above the earth, for whom safety and security was becoming more of a reality with each passing day? She had no answer to those questions, no sense of context or proportion or history as to what these incidents were. Doubtless she would have known right away if she had not spent the past moon with a demon seeing through her eyes and speaking through her mouth, caressing its way into all the soft spaces and hard corners of her mind.
She had half a temptation to demand point-blank what it was her fellow councilors wanted of her. Instead, she rolled her shoulders, straightened her posture, and directed her response solely to Raubahn. "I'll meet with you later, then, Commander. I should like to hear what you know so far."
"That's it?!"
The sudden outburst made her blink. Tibost cast about an arm to point at her, but his scowl was fixed firmly upon Lyse. "I bloody told you she'd have naught to say, even in her own defense."
Over the others already beginning to murmur in agreement or in discord, Lyse said, "Tibost, please-"
"She pisses off halfway 'round the world for gods only know how long, without so much as a 'by your leave' - and she gets to come back? Sit right here next to the rest of us and pretend she's put her time in as we have?"
Stark Woad opened her mouth to speak. For a moment Sarisha moved as if to rise to her full height; then Raubahn's voice cut through the growing din. "The Grand Steward's activities in the Far East are essential - and relevant to the goals of this council besides, if they succeed in curbing Garlemald's ambitions. We would do well not to discount her contributions wheresoever they take place." His tone was measured, laid out with careful deliberation. "And I trust that she will have much to report back to this council upon our next meeting. With that, shall we adjourn for the evening?"
There would be no denying such an overt end to the conversation, coming from Raubahn of all people. Several councilmembers got up at once to leave, with M'rahz Nunh silently shaking his head as he did so.
Ashe made to linger until all the others were gone. So too, it seemed, did Morgana; the woman spent half an eternity lacing up her boots but did not spare so much as a glance at anyone else. Ashe had little desire to speak to her except about her son, and so she chose not to throw herself and her wishes headlong into even greater quandaries.
It was Lyse who granted her the grace of a peaceable exit. "It's good to see you again," she said once she'd strode over to give her a proper greeting. "And because you look exhausted and I know better than to pry, I'll leave it at that."
Ashe could not help herself: she reached up to clasp her friend's shoulder in as firm of a grip as she could muster. "It feels like half an age," she agreed.
For a moment, she weighed what it might mean to confide in Lyse. As a former Scion, she would doubtless understand, even if only on a purely theoretical level, the implications of all that she had seen and done at the hands of the Seraph. Then a recollection of a pile of Garlean corpses, their running blood flowing across stone tiles as smoothly as Lyse's silk dress, nestled its way into her mind, and she thought better of it.
"Go get some rest. I'll have Raubahn come by your house tomorrow morning."
Mutely, she nodded. It would give her a few more hours to get to the bottom of what had transpired during her possession, and to puzzle out the answer to an unthinkable choice: whether Ala Mhigo would now be better served by her absence.

SteveTony Weekly - Jan 8th

Hey friends! I shared a twitter thread of my favorite Stevetony fics ever to celebrate 2 years on Twitter--feel free to check it out.
And here’s this week’s reading! Enjoy and remember to toss a kudos to your fic writer!
~*~
jealousy is all the fun you think they had by kellifer_fic
Is it socially acceptable to be jealous of your boyfriend's ex-dead best friend?
Therapeutic Guidelines by kellifer_fic
"Are you suggesting I get a bunch of bunk beds in here and squeeze us all into one room?" Tony scoffs and the woman just looks at him. "No, wait-"
If At First by kellifer_fic
Where Tony is stupid and Steve has been waiting for a long time.
Turn Around (Three Times Before Lying Down) by kellifer_fic
Everyone knows that Tony Stark is a playboy, billionaire philanthropist, but what they don’t know is that he’s also a werewolf. When a government agency known as SHIELD finds out, they use this information to force Tony’s hand and bring him into a new elite lycan field team, codename The Avengers Initiative.
Suddenly Tony finds himself playing host to a bunch of lycans, a misplaced God of Thunder and an experimental supersoldier that isn’t as dead as everyone assumed. Can his week get any worse?

After Tony's sex tape hits the news, Steve finds himself curious.
Sotto Voce by Woad
Tony's motto is better to give than to receive. With Steve, that's a must.

Don’t people learn? Steve’s kicked faces in for less.
My Corner's Always Open For You, Sweetheart by Gothic_Lolita
Steve knew coming to this part of the city only ever meant one thing. Good thing that was exactly the thing he was looking for.
Just Give Me Your Jacket, Cap by MountainRose
Tony's young, he gets that they have 'legal responsibility' for him, but sometimes it means a bit more than keeping him on the right road.
Dressed to Impress by radiophile
Tony Stark is not at all prepared for the sight of Steve Rogers in vintage military dress.

Tony finds out that when it comes to Avengers, you can't adopt just one.
life as a tree house extension by kellifer_fic
So, it turns out Tony isn't exactly sure what to do with a whole bunch of Avengers once he has them all under one roof.
even the cake was in tiers by kellifer_fic
I'm pretty sure I'm married to Steve Rogers.
What, Like It's Hard? by JehBeeEh
Omega Tony Stark has it all, until his alpha boyfriend breaks his heart. In an effort to win him back, he follows the alpha of his dreams to Harvard Law School, where he discovers there might be more to being the first omega at the prestigious school. He also meets another alpha that might just make him forget the one he drove across the country for.
Countdown by iL0Vsuperman
In a world where people use timer implants to help find their soulmates, you would think finding your soulmate and love would be easy.
But…
Steve had a soul implant that was zeroed out, meaning he did not have a countdown to meet a soulmate. Steve easily reasoned he did not have a soulmate because he had bad genes, a common belief of his era. Despite this, he prayed for his implant to reset and to meet the person who would accept him for all he is.
Tony created a program for soulmates to find each other faster just so he could meet his soulmate before he turned 40. But, his soulmate never used the program, and it made Tony bitter and eventually begin to hate his mate.
Bucky had a zeroed out implant like Steve and, like Steve, prayed for his implant to reset. His prayers were answered, however, it was years later, when he was no longer his own person, when he was no longer Bucky, just, the Winter Soldier. He was not allowed to own anything, not even his own body, nonetheless a soulmate.
Natasha received the soul implant when she was indoctrinated into the Black Widow Program and, with it, was given her first mission to prove her loyalty: kill her soulmate.
One Thing Leads to Another by missbecky
Following the events in Avengers Tower on Christmas Eve, Steve resolves to ask Tony what he meant by calling him Captain Handsome. It's a simple question, and it should be a simple answer. He just never thought that it would lead him to some surprising revelations about the truth of his feelings for Tony.
I, for You by Renai_chan
In which Tony is a sub and Howard needs Steve to be his Dom.
mock me with praise by nanasekei
“You should rest. I… I have a quite comfortable couch, you know.”
Steve widened his eyes. “No,” he replied harshly, so blunt that Stark seemed taken aback, which somehow prompted him to add, a little lighter, “There’s no need.”
“You can’t sleep on the floor, darling,” Stark argued. The nickname, as always, fueled fire in Steve’s chest, and he wanted to run away and also to fight Stark at the same time. “Come on. I owe you.”
-
After waking up in a frenzy from a nightmare, Steve ends up locking himself out of his apartment. His hallway neighbor offers some help.
If Only by FestiveFerret
Steve wasn't gay. He wasn't. He'd know that about himself. He had no problem whatsoever with men who were attracted to men - he was dating one of them - but it wasn't him.
Touch and Go by FestiveFerret
In his defense, Tony thought Steve would back down.

Character Descriptions
•Describe your oc's physical description in whatever way you want. It can be for any fandom.•
Tagged by @rakimaiirisa a few days ago. I did it much the same way you did, with a quick bit of writing. This is for Adrian of Jehenna and Gero of Evermore, set somewhere after the fic they’re in Rise and Fall.
Adrian of Jehenna; Dragonborn, former Companion of the Circle, slayer of the World Eater, and champion of the Infinite Library, was reduced to being a barely kept problem, his wide array of skill ignored in favour of having him stand about stirring soup in the company of rebels. Likely they just wanted him somewhere close enough to watch, far enough to feel safe.
He stirred the soup again one last time, setting the ladle down carefully.
How Gero even thought it possible to blend in amongst them he could never fathom. Sheer force of stupidity would be his first guess, the one trait his estranged brother had in abundance.
He was stood some distance away in an ill fitting Stormcloak uniform, woad blue paint splashed across his face, the exact measure of closeness to his commanding officer that he was allowed. Gero could hide in Ralof’s shadow, a half head shorter than even the runtiest of the Nords present, that he had been a mage once clear in how small he seemed amongst men and women who could break him like dried kindling. Adrian was much the same, though he still practised his magicka along with the sword.
His stony expression, a bad caricature of a stoic warrior of Skyrim, was often practised and still flawed enough for Adrian to see him stealing glances at Ralof like a lovesick puppy. He would tell them to get it over with and bed each other if he cared any for either of them. He had briefly entertained the idea his brother might be more bearable, or at worst a measure less uptight, if he were getting regularly bedded, deciding he preferred the bastard pining and miserable. At least he had company that way, Farkas several Holds and a last threat away.
The Stormcloaks were almost all fair of skin, hair of ashen blond or earthen red. Both of them by contrast were black haired, skin not so much fair as pallid in the way only the old noble houses of the Iliac could be. The few Stormcloaks that chose to shed their uniforms had turned summer sunlight into bronzed complexions, if either of them dared try it would end raw and delicate.
Gero had thought himself brilliant by dyeing his hair with lye soap, citrus, and sunlight. It would almost be believable if his roots were not so stark in contrast. The only thing naturally golden about him was his eyes, brightly glowing with mer blood and so terribly Altmer even for a Breton. Adrian had lost some of his own glow not too far back, one of many scars left by the loss of the Daedric magic he had been siphoning. He had thought it his own will, his own choice, finding little by little that it was something much stranger. In his youth his eyes had been blue, growing lighter and brighter with every year approaching adulthood. Now there was inky black spots in the whites but only sometimes, worse when or where Oblivion reached close, pushed back by the reflective flash of moonlight behind them that made the broad circle of teeth mark scars on his shoulder hurt. He had let his hair grow out again, having terribly little choice in the matter finding it was growing faster since he had been ‘gifted’ the beast blood. It was a careful balancing act, giving enough to Hircine to deny Mora without becoming a feral thing.
The soup boiled up, bubbles rising and turning to watch him as if aware he had been thinking about them. Too many eyes, green and judging, growing from nothing then popping back into the black. He picked up the ladle and struck at the image, the heavy clang of metal against metal scattering the vision away. He could still smell brine water and ink even as that little half moment of unreality faded back to the Library. It was just rabbit and carrot soup, and had always been rabbit and carrot soup, and if he kept telling himself that he could pretend he had not felt the icy touch of Hermaeus Mora reaching up out through the cracks in the skin of the world to swallow him whole.
Gero must have sensed something, for even as dull as he was these days he had once been a conjuror with a deep connection to Oblivion. He had rushed over, staying just far enough away to should anything be wrong he could draw his blade and strike.
“You can deal with this.” Adrian handed him the ladle, barging past him. “I need to be anywhere else.”
Gero made no protest, simply shaking his head and leaving his brother to his irritable mood.

Blood and Sand | AO3 Link | Rome AU where Jon is sold as a gladiator after the Lannisters betray the Starks, and only years later meets Sansa again beneath the shadow of the coliseum.
When Jon meets Sansa again it is in the shadow of the coliseum, below the white marble and red awning and rows of seats, the roar of the crowd that had surged and rolled over the sands ebbed to a low crash in the distance.
Jon had looked for her in the crowd as he stumbled onto the sands beside his fellow gladiators: in the high box reserved for house Lannista he’d looked for the daughter to murdered lord Eddardeus Starki, for the slender and haughty Roman girl whose hair flashed copper in the sun, for the girl he’d been raised beside all his life but who had never seen him as anything more than the barbarian ward of her father’s, the girl who his gaze had been drawn to again and again no matter how he knew it shouldn’t.
But after the dark of the arena underbelly the sun’s gaze was blinding and by the time Jon had blinked it back from his eyes there was a sword in his hand and a man screaming towards him and no time for anything but the clash of steel and spray of blood and roar of the crowd.
That same man’s blood dries and flakes from Jon’s arm as he stands shackled behind the black bars that separate him and the other gladiators that fought on the sands beside him from the milling Romans come to point and gawk and stare at the champions of the arena. Through the crowd a pair of centurions shove their way to the front, hands resting on the pommel of their swords as they eye Jon for a moment before stepping aside.
It is then Jon catches sight of Sansa.
They always said you would be beautiful. The words are silent and sour on Jon’s tongue. Only three years it’s been since he last saw her, but in those three years she’s grown from the girl he remembers into a proper patrician woman: tall and slender and lovely beneath loose silks, a gold choker clasped around her throat and a silver serpent with emerald eyes coiling around one arm, a copper half crown resting in the elegantly piled coils of her red hair. That same red hair that had haunted his childhood, a whisper on the wind that only ever slipped from between his fingers if he reached for it.
He should look down. The stinging lash of the whip has taught Jon as much over the last three year: to never raise his eyes to citizen or centurion or patrician, but he cannot seem to as he watches Sansa approach the black bars, the silk hem of her skirt whispering over the uneven cobbles, cannot stop his eyes from trying to seek out hers.
“I saw you upon the sands.” A breeze lifts a few strays of Sansa’s hair before her face and she combs them back with a hand, eyes tiltings to meet his as she does: the same piercing blue as he remembers, like some hidden mountain pool. “You fought well,” the merest hesitation in her voice; then, soft and precise, “gladiator.”
Gladiator. Something claws at Jon’s throat, throbbing and ugly. Did you think she would greet you like some long lost brother, a voice in him hisses. Stripped to the waist and filthy with sweat and sand, blood drying and flaking from his shackled hands, black hair slicked and dripping, Jon knows well and truly what he looks. The barbarian he’s never been let forget he is all his life, a feral thing that will never be civilized no matter how long it lives among true Romans, a creature of the wilds beyond the light of Rome.
But she always knew that. Always saw you for the animal you were. What made you think it would be different now?
A dull ache throbs through Jon, but if there is one thing he’s learned the last three years it is pain. “You’re generous to say so,” he bites out, hardening his jaw and forcing himself to meet Sansa’s gaze again, “domina.”
Something flickers in Sansa’s eyes, and for a moment she looks as just as young as she once did. Her lips part as though to speak, but her gaze twitches to the pair of centurion behind her, and whatever she was to say dies unspoken. Jon followers her gaze, for the first time noting the bronze cloak pins stamped with the asiatic lion of house Lannista. Guards from her betrothed no doubt.
Sansa bites her lip. “The mob tells a strange tale of you,” she says carefully. “They say you lived among Romans once.”
“You must be mistaken, domina.” Jon shakes his head, a bitterness he thought stripped from him long ago seeping into his words. “What lord would be foolish enough to ward a barbarian like me?”
Sansa blinks. Her tongue traces her lips, and Jon wishes he could look away, hates himself for the way he can’t. Sansa glances at the centurions, both of whose attention has drifted away, then takes a swift step toward him. “You can tell no one who you are,” she says, voice low and urgent. “Do you hear me, Jon? No one must know you were father’s ward.”
Jon. The name is painful somehow, the dull ache of a rotted tooth. How long has it been since he heard it last? A year? More? An animal has no name. And that’s all you’ve ever been to her. “Of course not,” he grinds out. “I wouldn’t want to embarrass you, domina.”
Sansa draws back from the bars as though slapped, eyes searching his face, jaw settling in a hard line. “Is that what you think of me?”
“What else should I think?” Jon tilts his head to the side, a cold, distant fury welling deep in him. “I was there, Sansa. I saw it, saw the Lannista butcher your house. I felt the life leave your father’s body. And now here you stand- betrothed- ”
“I am. Not all cages are iron.”
Jon laughs, a bitter sound. “A cage with cushions and slaves and grapes. I would know nothing of it, simple barbarian that I am.”
“You have no idea the things I’ve endured.” Sansa’s voice is cold enough to cut. “No idea what I’ve given to stand here today. What I’ve had to swallow down and smile through. Whose hands I’ve let on me. Do you think you are the only one that has suffered, Jon?”
Jon looks away, bitter and tired; of this girl from another world, this girl from a world that he’d so desperately wanted but could never have, a world that had been ripped from him all the same. “Why are you here?” He asks without looking at her. “What do you want from me, Sansa?”
The same looks as before flickers over Sansa’s eyes, and she takes another step toward the bars. “Jon-”
“Take care, domina,” calls out one of the slavemasters down the line. “That one is wild as a wolf.”
“You should listen to him. We’re wild all of us.” Jon jerks his chin at where the other gladiators who fought in the arena stand shackled like him, each separated from the next the better to let the Romans gawk at them. Most are barbarians like him, prisoners of the tribes beyond the light of Rome: Tormund the massive red bearded bear of a man the others name Giantsbane; Ygritte the spearmaid who the crowd cheer as Kissed by Fire; Val the Woad-Maid with her honey dark hair and arms inked with strange and twisting blue knots; Varamyr who wore a cloak sewn of animal pelts and called himself Six-Skins; tall and cunning Mance the Raider with his hard smile.
“I thought myself a Roman too,” Mance had told Jon when first they met chained in the heaving belly of a slave ship. “Like you I was raised as a ward among them. But even a house dog is still only a dog, fit only for scraps, fit only to slake their bloodthirst. And a mighty thirst these Romans have.”
Jon had not wanted to believe it. All his life he’d lived with the uneasy shame in the pit of his gut of his barbarian birth, all his life been told that Rome was the light of civilization. Apart he’d held himself from the other gladiators at first, but that had been beaten out of him bruise by bruise and lash by stinging lash. “You’re one of us,” Ygritte had laughed one night when they were both deep in their cups after a hard fought day in the arena, cheap wine a sting on the tongue, “don’t ever think you’re not just because you lived among them once, kneeler.”
It was the night they’d first taken to bed. The night that Ygritte had straddled his lap and reached beneath his tunic to stroke him stiff as she kissed him, hard and bruising and tongue tart with wine. The night he’d surged up against her and fisted his fingers in her hair, that red hair from another life, jerked back her head to bare her throat and nip and bruise the lines of it like he truly was the wolf the Romans said he was.
He’d tried to lose himself there. Tried to lose himself in the heat of Ygritte, be more beast than man as he took her, tried to forget himself as she panted and moaned and taunted him to ride her harder, tried to forget all that had been taken from him and all those he’d failed, to forget all he’d ever wanted or hoped for, to forget the haughty blue eyed girl whose hair flashed copper in the sun who Ygritte both looked everything and nothing like.
But with Sansa standing only a foot away, just as achingly lovely as he remembers, Jon understands dully, in some part of himself he’d tried to bury, just how truly pointless that was. He looks away, suddenly weary beyond words, all the days exhaustion settling over his shoulders: the cut across his side, the sting of sweat in his eyes, the dull burn of his limbs.
“You should listen to him.” Jon repeats with a weary jerk of his chin at the slavemaster. “That barbarian boy who warded with your father is long gone. He wasn’t worth a proper Roman death when the Lannista found him, but he died all the same. All that’s left is a wolf.”
Sansa bites her lip. He eyes drift down from Jon’s face to the map of muscles and scars across his chest and shoulders in a way that makes Jon feel naked as she traces the long knitted slash along his ribs from a Thracian sword, the small and ugly pucker above his hip where the barbed tine of a trident had been ripped out, the scarred patches pockmarking his shoulder from where he’d scraped the flesh clean to the bone throwing himself back against the sandstone of an arena wall to avoid the swing of an axe that would’ve taken his head.
“You’re no wolf, Jon.” Sansa’s eyes rise to meet his again, and Jon feels even more naked than he had a moment before. “You never were.”
Jon swallows back the bitter laugh bubbling in his chest, the irony of her- of all people- of Sansa- he closes his eyes and shakes his head. “What does it matter?” He asks tiredly. “What do you want, Sansa? Why are you here?”
She doesn’t answer at once. Her eyes drift to the other gladiators, then out to the crowd of citizens gawking at them. “You can tell no one who you truly are, Jon. If Joffreus and the other Lannista knew you were still alive they would have you killed at once, favorite of the mob or no.”
“I wasn’t worth killing three years ago, not worth wasting the handful of denari a barbarian could fetch in the arena. Why bother now?”
“Because things are changing and the Lannista are not as favored as they once were. Not by the city, and not by the mob. I’m sorry as children that I- that we never-” Sansa looks away. The breeze plays with the strays of her hair, and she combs them back. “I suppose it doesn’t matter now. I know you don’t love me, Jon. That there’s always been little love lost between us. And I’m sorry for that.” The eyes she turns to him are hard. “But what comes next won’t take love.”
I know you don’t love me. Jon wishes it was true. It would be easier if it was. Easier to turn from this girl who has haunted his dreams through years of blood and sand and woe. To become the wolf the Romans say he is, to bury that boy from another life, to be nothing but the ring of a blade and spray of blood and roar of a crowd. It would be easier. But has never been able to turn from her, not when they were children and she would laugh and toss her copper hair and his eyes would follow her despite how they shouldn’t, and not now a woman grown tall and slim and beautiful and cold, and so what he finds himself asking is, “and what comes next?”
“Blood.” The eyes Sansa meets Jon’s with are distant and cold as some windswept peak, voice sharp as the cut of ice. “I’m going to make the Lannista pay, Jon. For what they’ve done. For betraying my family. I’m going to take everything from them they hold dear.” Sansa’s fingers whispers against the iron bars as she steps forward, eyes tilting to meet Jon’s as though there were no bars between them at all. “And when that’s done, when their joy has turned to ash and they see all they love reduced to rubble, then and only then I’ll put a sword in your hand, Jon, and you'll finish our vengeance.”

So, I'm making my way through Stormblood now! It seems like a lot of people treat this expansion like the black sheep of the family, but honestly I am really enjoying it so far. (I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that I'm playing as a Xaela, WRT to the Steppe plotline.) I just met Stark Woad, so I think I'm like, at the halfway point? What was Gisele's reaction to some of the bigger plot points? (Also what's your tag for Hien?) If you get spoilery in your response, I don't mind!
I don’t hate it as much as some people but I seriously have no interest in revisiting any of it in NG+ except the Far Eastern arc and there’s a reason you don’t see me writing fic about it, but for the Lakshmi thing. The Far East was damn near flawless. Even people who hate SB are fairly unanimous that the Azim Steppe in particular is easily the high point of the expansion. Everything goes down hill once you go back to Gyr Abania tbh.
That’s the real problem with SB imo: trying to cram the Ala Mhigo story together with a Far Eastern story just made the whole thing feel disjointed, like they took two different expansions and threw them together in a cheap blender. Lyse’s turn from comic relief side character to spotlight status was poorly executed and in general, despite being a Raubahn stan and a RDM main who started in Ul’dah I legit felt no kind of emotional investment in the Ala Mhigan struggle the way the story made me care about Ishgard (and later, the people on the First). The pacing was questionable and too often it felt like they had a checklist of plot points they had to mark off but they didn’t know how to get from point A to point B, and they didn’t know what to do with certain characters, so they just sort of made things up as they went (the Lakshmi plot is the most egregious example of this to me cuz it’s so out of left field and it really feels a lot like somebody realized “holy shit we forgot to make them fight another Primal this expansion, where can we stick Lakshmi?”). I love Zenos to death but I 100% understand why some find him an underwhelming antagonist, especially in a world that has since given us Emet-Selch. The whole thing really does feel like a first draft
And none of this was especially helped by the fact that SB followed what could have been a top 3 Final Fantasy story if it had been released as a standalone single player game (Heavensward was an incredibly tough act to follow), and in a post-Shadowbringers world SB’s flaws look even worse in hindsight. It really is the weakest link when you put it in the context of being sandwiched by some of the best Final Fantasy and RPG writing period in the last decade.
That said? I would still take Stormblood in a heartbeat over literally anything WoW did since Wrath of the Lich King. If I seem hard on it, it’s only because FFXIV is just that fucking good so my standards are a lot higher.
Anyway Gisele learned to Samurai from Hien and Gosetsu and her job crystal belonged to Lord Kaien. Her opinion of Garlemald is about what you’d expect from a Fereldan of Dalish heritage who used to count the Hero of River Dane as a lover. Gosetsu is like a loud, beloved uncle to her. Hien she fell madly in love with (as did Haurche. He went east with her and the others). He wasn’t the sole reason she became so invested in the Doman struggle; her friendship with Yugiri and the other Doman refugees pretty much ensured it way before she even met Hien. But it helped, admittedly. She really fell in love with the Far East period tbh, to the point she owns property in Shirogane (in game just an apartment, but in my head she has another little cottage there instead).
The only person she despises more than Magnai is Fordola, and she took a great deal of pleasure in beating the unholy shit out of both.
Gisele’s feelings toward Zenos are horrendously complicated. Obviously, she hates what he’s done. But he draws lizard brain shit out of her that she doesn’t understand and also scares the everloving shit out of her. It’s Complicated.
Main thing to keep in mind is that Ysayle and Haurche are still around and are both Scions at this point. Ysayle wasn’t 100% until after Gisele and them came back west though, so she sat out most of the story.
My Hien tag is actual disney samurai prince. Because he is.
