How representative is it really? A correspondence on sortition
A few months ago, Paolo Spada and I published a blog post about sortition and the representativeness of citizens’ assemblies. We were pleasantly surprised by the response to our post and the ensuing discussions. In this new exchange at the Deliberative Democracy Digest, Kyle Redman, Paolo Spada, and I try to delve deeper, exploring further the challenges of achieving representativeness in…

I just wanna say something because I think people’s views of things are warped. Like in a world where STILL only 1 out of every 5 movies have an lgbt character … and everyone’s life has at least one lgbt person in it. like it’s 2023 and people are judging media from like 20 years ago and not giving it the credit it deserves for even getting us to this point.
We can rightfully criticize House MD for many things but the fact that in 2004/2005 in S1&S2 they had multiple patients of the week that were gay or bi (not implied either way). And no one used it as a joke or a punchline (except the mafia one but it was mostly house being an asshole per usual “he’s not gay but certainly delightful” and the point at the end of the episode was his brother was an asshole for not accepting him) and part of the main cast that was bisexual. But to me like having the patients of the week be in gay relationships and it be normalized and no one say anything about it being odd IN 2005, almost 20 years ago, did a lot. Like these patients are supposed to be from a slice of life perspective like their lives got disrupted and ultimately I’m glad they didn’t have it always be from a straight perspective and that it wasn’t treated any differently than a straight person.
Also a lot of people like to badmouth Glee and yes it was terrible for bisexual representation but the fact that we got a teenage boy kissing his boyfriend on network tv in 2009 before gay marriage was legalized was again… a huge step. And that was actually a pretty diverse cast regardless
I just think that people need to put stuff in perspective with older media ESPECIALLY ones that were trying to do something. Of course they fell flat by today’s standards but it was 15-20 years ago, they should because we should try to be better. And fun fact they’re still better than 80% of media out there today because 80% of media doesn’t even bother to have any representation at all

"The head of Helsinki City Theatre, the director of the musical Kari Arffman says that it's not the job of theatre to educate the audience by tackling difficult themes, but the theatre can incite people to take action in their own daily lives.
- If someone, after seeing [Dear Evan Hansen] asks another how they're really doing, then that's important."

It's not the job of the theatre to tackle difficult topics?!?!? Guess that explains why HCT has been staging the blandest musicals to ever bland for the past few years ajlgsähksälfsä

Also while we’re on the topic: Polls were a really fun experiment but I can’t see a way to make them work moving forward.
Sorry for the disappointing news today but best to get it all out of the way at the same time.

Finding an odd sort of poetry tonight. I went into my messages to clear out the spam, and looked at an account I had previously messaged- a friend, before. I clicked on their blog and what do you know? Ghost blog. Now I'm thinking about ghost blogs, or ghost presences in general. On Tumblr, Ghost blogs are physical- someone decided, intentionally, to turn them off. I wonder how many blogs that are unmarked, have gone unposted for years, are because someone has passed or has abandoned Tumblr in general. On Facebook, it's easy to post on someone else's timeline with wishes from beyond their grave. On sites like Instagram- not so much. With how new the digital world is, and how prevalent AI is becoming, I wonder; how long will it be until there are more digital ghosts than living people?

A Surprising Twist [Horror Movie Misogyny 7]
Well known horror movie tropes like the Black character dies first for example, or the slut gets it normalizes harmful stereotypes. Showing who deserves to live (and not) leads many people to believe this kind of behavior is OK – that it’s acceptable to victimize these types because she “had it coming,” or that men deserve to get the shit beaten out of them if they show any sign of…

#marzi speaks#in poly sci rn n my neck hurts from this notes hunch i’m in but i cannot help it#but we were asking questions abt representation in congress#n one dude goes ‘why doesn’t congress do anyrhing about border issues’#but he says it in such an aggressive ‘there are invaders coming to ruin the economy’ way#and our professor who is good at neutral language answered his question abt as well as he could#(‘while i can’t speak for them the lack of action in any direction is likely due to polarization and gridlock’)#but whatever right i’m used to people who are loudly opinionated#eventually he gets to my question#on the slides there was a graph showing the representation of LGB congress members#i wanted to know if there were any trans members#my professor started to answer with ‘i don’t know! there hasn’t been a lot of research into this demographic and i’ll have to look into it’#when the SAME DUDE butts in like ‘there’s one and he has stolen luggage and done this and that and ALSO is married to a lesbian navy general#(he phrased that last one like it was as grave a crime as theft)#i got so fucking blindsided like dude. i was asking a statistical question why are you so aggressively asserting that this moc sucks#calm down. jesus#anyways the girl in front of me quietly turned to me like ‘i looked it up he’s on the HoR’ and the relief in my face was likely evident#bc hey. a normal fucking answer to a non-opinionated question#anyways no clue what that guy looks like bc big lecture theatre but. dude. cmon#he also later referred to me as she and sure whatever he was going off of voice#but i do not want That Guy to refer to me as she. my mouth felt like ash#blegh. eugh.#anyways. now i have to watch out for sudden loaded language outta nowhere#yippee !!!!#so funny tho bc everyone was trying so hard to be like ‘here are the facts’ or ‘here’s my opinion’ in a civil way#and then there’s this guy who’s like ‘This Is My Opinion (AKA The Truth) Why Are Government Not Listen To Truth’#like bro !!!! chill tf out ur scary

Hey Neil,
I just got waitlisted for a college I really cared about. I applied to a lot of places and got accepted with good scholarships, but this was the place I was genuinely excited for, not only for its location and opportunities but also for its stellar academic programs. There is a chance of still getting in, but I’m still really down about it and the waitlist admittance statistics have been pretty inconsistent in previous years. High school has been a terrible experience for me overall, and I just want to be able to move on to something better but this is really stressing me out. Do you have any words of encouragement and perhaps some dog pics? Emphasis on the dog pictures.
As always, thank you for bringing your stories into the world, Good Omens and Lucifer specifically helped me a ton. It’s always nice to get some good queer representation and I know I speak for many including myself when I say that that can be lifesaving.
And thank you again, just because.

Be a Lighthouse - Fight For OFMD Season 3
Tumblr media
Hi everyone. The news of our cancellation is both incredibly devastating, and quite shocking considering the trajectory of the show and its fanbase. Everything looked like it was lining up in a positive fashion...only for the rug to get yanked out from under us.
I cried. I went numb. I stared at the wall for a while.
But then, something sparked. Like Ed who was resolved to his fate in S1Ep4 only to rocket back upwards, I was struck with a realization: we need to be a lighthouse!
Fanbases have campaigned before, and have gotten results. Sense8 was able to get a two hour finale to properly wrap everything up. Lucifer was able to get picked up by Netflix after being cancelled by Fox. Brooklyn 99 was able to get picked up by NBC after being cancelled by Fox. And many more examples.
Be it a proper renewal, a finale wrap that entails Ed and Stede's wedding, or the attention from another network, I say we fight that good fight. So, here are some ways we can be heard; if you think of any additional points, please feel free to add them!
If you don't cancel your Max Subscription, continue watching the show and leaving feedback on Max's online feedback form. I had a kneejerk reaction when cancellation was announced and pulled the plug...only to sit back and reconsider. I want them to still get my metrics. I want them to still see the show means something to me. And whether that's through words or statistics, I feel like that's something.
2. Follow @renewasacrew and keep up with their resources/campaigns. They're very active and passionate, and have already come up with different ways to fight for our show.
3. Sign the petition to give us just that little bit more of a chance to have our voices heard.
4. Stay active on social media, and stay positive. Continue sharing how much this show means to us. Continue creating. Continue loving. Use hashtags like-
#RenewAsACrew
#SaveOFMD
#RenewOFMD
#BeALighthouse
#OFMDSeason3
or anything equivalent on any and all OFMD-related posts. Keep the buzz about it going on social media. Comment on posts, keep spreading the word, and get the light burning.
5. Renewasacrew has given us another outlet; an official HBO email address. Write an email detailing your personal experience with this show, and how significant a third season would be.
6. Tweet/email other platforms to pique their interest. Be it Amazon Prime, Hulu, Netflix, or whoever else, let's see if we can't catch someone else's attention. A romcom with iconic LGBT representation seems pretty enticing if you ask me!
This show means the world to me. Y'all mean the world to me. So let's show them why. Let's show them why, and get the proper ending we, the cast and crew, and the characters all deserve.

Labor unions successfully organized more than 58,000 workers through the National Labor Relations Board’s election process in the first six months of 2023, a massive influx of workers on a scale that we’ve rarely seen before—but that we’re likely to see again. The 662 NLRB representation elections won by unions in the year’s first half covered a total of 58,543 workers, according to Bloomberg Law’s just-released NLRB Election Statistics report. That’s the second-highest first-half organizing total in this century. By itself, this statistic isn’t the surest measurement of labor strength; all it takes is one freakishly large election result to make a six-month period appear a lot more impressive than it really was. (This is exactly what happened in May 2013: A bargaining unit of nearly 45,000 already-unionized workers switched representation from one union to another through the NLRB election process, raising the midyear total to 67,687.) No such anomaly is present in 2023. The sheer number of union wins so far this year, surpassing even last year’s Starbucks-studded total, makes it plain that this current wave of organized workers is no fluke.
