Podfic Recs!
One of my favorite things about fanfic is the existence of podfics. That said, I'm excited to share a few of my favorites with you! I tried to go for a wide range of fandoms so there should be something for everyone.
Works Alone read by kbirb pods (kbirb) Batman, (gen), 20 mins, Crack, Batfam When trying to pull the team together, Bruce’s ideas are dismissed, because he 'works alone'. He goes home to his kids to pout about it.
Straight On Till Morning read by reena_jenkins DC Legends of Tomorrow, (Sara Lance/Mick Rory/Leonard Snart), 2-2.5 hrs, AU-Canon Divergence Left alone in the Refuge, Mick and Sara decide they're going to be proactive about their fate. They end up becoming time pirates. Because of course they do.
The Haunting of Harrison Wells read by luvtheheaven (VioletEmerald) The Flash, (gen), 2-2.5 hrs, AU-No Powers, AU-Ghost Story Harrison Wells died in 1958. Almost sixty years later, Barry Allen meets a ghost in STAR Labs.
Not a Damsel in Distress read by nickelmountain Supernatural, (gen), 10-20 min, Pre-Canon, Case Fic Mary smiles and shrugs when her dad looks at her. Mermaids. She hates water-creatures. She hates killing things on family holidays. “Mary can come with me,” David says grandly. or, Mary and a cousin go hunting. The cousin is less than helpful.
With a Conquering Air read by AceOfTigers The Witcher, (Geralt/Jaskier), 3-3.5 hrs, Accidental Warlord AU, Slow Burn Jaskier arrives at Kaer Morhen knowing his family gave him up without a second thought, and absolutely sure that the dreaded Warlord of the North will value him even less than his own blood did. But the White Wolf and his pack are not what Jaskier expected...and if he's unreasonably lucky, Kaer Morhen might become far more of a home than Lettenhove ever was.
both have sharp teeth read by Shmaylor Daredevil, (gen), 1.5-2 hrs, Angst, Black Widow!Karen "And there are stories about wolves and girls. Girls in red. All alone in the woods. About to get eaten up. Wolves and girls." -Black Widow, Nathan Edmondson She is one of 28. The story of the girl who would be Karen Page, through Russian winters and New York streets.
If They Haven't Learned Your Name read by quietnight MCU, (Steve Rogers/Bucky Barnes), 24 hrs, Buck Barnes World Revenge Tour, Humor Steve gets out of the hospital in two days, but just barely. “I’m fine,” he tells Sam, Nurse Eunjung and the phalanx of doctors assigned to make sure Captain America didn’t bleed out and die and get bad PR all over their nice clean hospital.“I have an advanced healing factor. It’s fine. See? I’m standing.” “That is not standing,” Sam tells him. “You’re bending the IV stand,” Nurse Eunjung adds pointedly. “Let go and sit down, they don’t grow on trees.” aka Steve and Bucky's Global Honeymoon Revenge World Tour.

My media this week (22-28 Oct 2023)
Tumblr media
📚 STUFF I READ 📚
🙂 The Golden Spoon (Jessa Maxwell, author; full voice cast narration) - a perfectly cromulent book: totally predictable to anyone who's read more than 1 mystery but still entertaining in both characters and plot. Gerald, my autistic king, you were definitely my fave. [I did like the idea of having a different voice narrator for each character, since the chapter POVs switch, but the narrator for Stella sounded like the Tiktok automated voice about 90% of the time. I could tell I was going to get annoyed with that & with the way audio draws things out when I can read text so much faster and it became clear the plot was going to be so predictable, so I switched over to reading text ~35%.]
🙂 The Sleeping Beauty Curse (who_la_hoop) - 152K, drarry, accidental soulbond
😍 i come back to the place you are (pizzabones) - 211K, steddie canon-divergent post s4, extremely satisfying slow burn, loved the dual POV structure with eddie in a coma for the first 10 months the fic covers
💖💖 +79K of shorter fic so shout out to these I really loved 💖💖
soldier keep on marching on (waiting on that morning sun) (songofswiftsunrise) - LOTR: gen, 4k - lovely 'Boromir Lives' AU, inspired by emily martin's incredible art
Pursued by Bear (Zenaidamacrouras1) - MCU: shrunkyclunks, 19K - reread, forever fave, inspired by that tweet about the UFC & Shakespeare conventions occurring in the same hotel
A Tricky Bit of Spellwork (AidaRonan) - OFMD: gen, 1K - legit the only way I'll accept Izzy not being dead is this
Ready for Love (idiopathicsmile) - Singin' in the Rain: Cosmo/Don/Kathy, 13K - the Singin' in the Rain OT3 fic I didn't know I needed

Ken Frailing, 1948-2022
Even though this point out of Ken Frailing dying upon August 25 will be considerably limited, he was continue to a well known determine in just White Sox heritage. Frailing was component of simply the minute draft course within just White Sox heritage, taken within the 5th spherical in just 1966. When potentially not an endorsement for the early draft results of the franchise, Frailing was simply the 3rd White Sox draft alternative (guiding Paul Edmondson, taken in just 1965, and final Sox choose of 1966, Carlos Might) in the direction of accomplish a absolutely sure WAR for the club.Frailing experienced a small nevertheless successful tenure with the White Sox https://www.chicagowhiteteamstore.com/Vince_Velasquez_Jersey-84, and biggest league profession. Despite the fact that throwing as a beginner and never ever taking a primarily incredible extend of season upon the farm, the lefty debuted as a September get in touch with-up inside of 1972, and acquired into stage instantly absent, using one particular out at Yankee Stadium. 3 times afterwards, he gained his 1st profession victory, within just a acquire at Comiskey Park higher than the Twins, yet again merely becoming a person out. He totaled a few innings in just 4 online games within just 1972, generating 0.1 WAR not a negative price tag at all!The subsequent yr, even now serving as further of a lefty consultant out of the pen, Frailing noticed even further period with the White Sox and all over again acquitted himself perfectly, creating 0.6 WAR inside a mere 10 game titles. Inside of his incredibly minimal pattern sizing upon the South Aspect, Frailing clocked a 2.11 Generation or within context, a 191 Generation+!Every time not upon the South Aspect within 1973, Frailing was tearing it up as a member of the Triple-A Iowa Oaks, and his 11-3 historical past and 2.86 Technology developed him a minimal nonetheless maybe powerful piece of the package deal (together with Steve Stone, Steve Swisher) shipped north in just the catastrophic White Sox package deal for Ron Santo. Upon the north facet, the Cubs altered his part, going him into a rookie/swingman/extensive aid place, exactly where he was considerably less successful. Nonetheless, he accomplished his occupation within 1978 even now retaining upon towards a sub-4.00 Technology (3.96) and even greater 3.65 FIP. His 97 Technology+ for his profession implies an effectively regular pitcher who might consist of found far more year within the majors, specially as his vocation finished with 2 clean groups coming into MLB. Even now, he was stricken by means of nagging shoulder suffering and hung his cleats up just after a single top period again inside of the White Sox business https://www.chicagowhiteteamstore.com/Nellie_Fox_Jersey-15, in which he pitched toward a 3.11 Generation in just Double-A.Frailing was a indigenous of Wisconsin, and held some attitude upon his occupation by way of developing a routine of going to Chicago-nearby children hospitals. Do you have any voice ‘headcannons’(?) for the characters? If so who are they/what do they sound like?
Not really, but I'll think up some random combos now. I'd like these if I had to 'hear' voices... P much a casting in my head if this was hollywood, for any i can think of, fuuun lil exercise: Phonegingi: Steve Buscemi. (ok) Randy: Justin Roiland, probably. Tom Kenny'd also nail it. Karen: Rhea Seehorn. (She'd nail it.) Oliver: Young Keanu Reeves (aka Ted Logan from Bill and Ted. Woah.) Maybe Andy Samberg if it has to be someone present. Bigfoot: Seth Rogen (still just making the ape noises) Norm: This one is really hard because he HAS a voice in-game. Alright, say I have to pick a new one... No idea. Clint Eastwood would be great, but he's a prune now, in fairness. OH NO, JONATHAN BANKS. Yeah, wow. Him. Please. Jerry: Would be funny if he was british and thus, Tim Roth. If not, ohhh, I don't know. Jason Bateman would be good. Maybe Patrick Warburton- Mr Dickens: Playing with fire here, but John Cleese. Really, any of the Pythons would work. Or Steven Fry, actually- Nathan: Probably Tim Roth. Or Adrian Edmondson. God: Bob Odenkirk. Please GOD. Mark Hamill would also be amazing lmao Stromboli: Danny Devito (duh!) Abel: Michael McKean doing the Chuck voice from Better Call Saul. Yeah, really. Callum: No idea. It's hard, again, because I HAVE a voice for him. You'd need someone... energetic. Tell ya what, why don't you guys reply or reblog and tell me who you'd cast as Norm + Callum if they had to be recast with any actor you wanted? :)

Hi! With the Black Widow movie coming out, I just re-watched some old MUC movies and remembered how much I love Natasha. What are the main, must-read, Natasha-centric comics that you would recommend to a comics newbie? (You once made a similar post for Loki comics that I used and found extremely helpful.) Thanks for everything you share! I've found a lot of content that I enjoy through your blog!
Thanks, anon! I'm always happy when I can be rewarded for my loud yelling about things that I love. :D
I was sure I'd made a Natasha reading list a while back but apparently not?? what the fuck self. (well, other than my overall MCU starter kit recs post from forever ago that was for all of the O6 and is also very old.)
okay well then I guess it's time to do that now, no time like the present! going to link to trades where they exist but I'll include issue numbers as well
heads up: you probably will run into references you don't understand in some of these. that's comics for you. my advice: either let those things float by you, or just Google them - you can enjoy comics without knowing/having read all the lore!
anyway, the recs.
the easiest suggestion I have right off the bat though is the Black Widow Epic Collection editions that have been published recently (Black Widow: Beware the Black Widow, and Black Widow: The Coldest War) which include some of her major appearances, including in a bunch of old single issues that would otherwise be hard to find. HOWEVER, those won't take you up into her more contemporary appearances (the latest publish date in there is 1996).
THE TOP OF THE LINE
The Marjorie Liu run collected as Black Widow: The Name of the Rose (Black Widow vol. 4 #1-5). If you read no other Black Widow comics, read this one. It's so good, easily one of my top five comics runs of all time. Cannot recommend it enough.
Black Widow: The Itsy Bitsy Spider which includes two different short runs (Black Widow vol. 1, #1-3 & Black Widow vol. 2, #1-3). This is probably my other favorite Black Widow collection of issues (and they very much lead into each other); here's where Yelena gets introduced and also where you can find some very gay panels. If you can't find this one, you can find the same issues republished with the added Pale Little Spider miniseries in a trade called Marvel Knights Black Widow by Grayson and Rucka: The Complete Collection.
The Nathan Edmondson/Phil Noto run collected in three trades The Finely Woven Thread, The Tightly Tangled Web, and Last Days (Black Widow vol. 5, #1-20). This one follows on thematically in some ways from the Marjorie Liu run but primarily the appeal here, in my opinion, is Phil Noto's art, which is gorgeous.
The Mark Waid/Chris Samnee run collected as Black Widow: SHIELD's Most Wanted and Black Widow: No More Secrets (as well as in a Complete Collection edition) (Black Widow vol. 6, #1-12). This was a series not long enough for this world but a delight while it lasted - again, particularly the art, but Waid and Samnee also just work together very, very well.
Black Widow: Web of Intrigue which includes Marvel Fanfare #10-13, Bizarre Adventures #25, and Black Widow: The Coldest War, some older stories featuring Natasha.
THE DEEPER CUTS
I'd put down first Hawkeye & Mockingbird / Black Widow: Widowmaker as a recent series worth reading; the trade also collects Solo Avengers #16-18 in addition to Widowmaker #1-4. I don't think it really gets referenced in other places, but it's a fun collection of issues and I love the dynamic of these three together.
If you want to dig into the background of the character and her true comics origins, check out the old comics collected in Black Widow: The Sting of the Widow which include her first appearances, the introduction of her iconic costume (in Spider-man, actually), and her short run in Amazing Adventures (Tales of Suspense #52, Amazing Spider-Man #86, Amazing Adventures vol. 2 #1-8, Daredevil #81).
This is...kind of a weird one and also a mixed recommendation, but I will throw out there the semi-extracanonical Black Widow: Homecoming (Black Widow vol. 3, #1-6) and Black Widow: The Things They Say About Her (Black Widow 2 vol. 3, #1-6), apparently also now collected as Black Widow: Welcome to the Game, written by Richard K. Morgan (yes, the author of the book that inspired the Netflix show Altered Carbon) because while they are...not good in all ways they do hit some very specific notes for me in places.
Captain America & Black Widow is a short team-up run with Steve and Natasha that's enjoyable if a bit wacky (Captain America & Black Widow #636-640) from a period of time where there was just a series of Captain America team-ups as part of the Captain America run.
This is going to be a hard one because it's not collected anywhere as far as I can tell, but Marvel Knights #1-15 which was published in 2000-2001 as part of Marvel's street level gritty initiative thing (that actually produced some quite good comics). I tracked it down in single issues back in college and actually really loved it. Team book but Natasha is prominent.
If you can find Black Widow & the Marvel Girls (Black Widow & the Marvel Girls #1-4) it is a treasure of a miniseries but unfortunately very difficult, in my experience, to track down.
The Black Widow: Widowmaker collection pulls together an assortment of sort of random oneshots/short runs with some good stuff in there (mostly the thing that I like that is in this one and not in other collections on this list are Fear Itself: Black Widow #1, but it does also include with other material some of the other runs on this list - Black Widow vol. 4 #1-8, Black Widow: Deadly Origin #1-4, and Widowmaker #1-4).
Finally: there's The Champions, the short-lived team Natasha actually led back in the day which is pretty Silver Age but sometimes in an endearing way, and the arc collected in Daredevil: The Widow which is Natasha-centric (Daredevil #61-66) and good enough that I bought it even though I'm not a particular fan of Daredevil. But that might partly be because I really like Alex Maleev's art.
People recommend Black Widow: Deadly Origin but I am not personally a big fan. I'm putting it on here mostly so you have it and also so other people know I'm aware of it.
I'm not yet caught up on the most recent currently running series so I can't speak to recommending it or not.
if you really, really want more deep cuts, anon, I have some, uh, team runs and single issue appearances I'm very fond of personally, but that starts going way down the rabbit hole in a way that perhaps you do not want to.

Hi there! This is the blog formerly known as oh-smeg, a Red Dwarf centric blog. If you're following me for that, you can find my Red Dwarf side blog below. The chances are, if this blog is following you then it's on behalf of one of my side blogs.
*In order of most to least active*
@shelikesthosefunnypeople - For general stuff, mainly reblogs, no particular fandom, although you will find me being incredibly normal about Steve Coogan and Alan Partridge here. Fairly active.
@neil-neil-orange-peel - For The Young Ones / Rik Mayall / alternative comedy in general. Fairly active, though not as much as it used to be.
@baldricks-cunning-plan - For Blackadder. Not a super active blog.
@oh-smeg - For Red Dwarf. Contains everything formerly on this blog. Not a super active blog.
@rikandadefest - For the annual Rik and Ade Fest, a fanart and fanfic prompt fest for all fandoms featuring Rik Mayall and/or Ade Edmondson, which runs every 12th June on ao3. I co-own this blog with a mutual.
@scumbag-monthly - For Scumbag Monthly, which was a fanzine for The Young Ones. I co-own this blog with several others. Scumbag Monthly is no longer active.
Aaaaand...
Please allow me to also plug my ao3 account, scumbaganarchy. I mainly write fic for The Young Ones but have also written fic for related fandoms. Basically, does it feature Rik Mayall? Then there's a chance I've written or am planning to write something for it.
Thanks for reading,
- R ❤️

Are there any comics you're reading now that you'd recommend?
Oooh, comic recs. This ask makes me so happy!!! How much time do you have?
Alright, well let me preface this by saying I primarily read Marvel. Right now I’m rereading the Jason Aaron run of Jane Foster’s Mighty Thor which was AMAZING so I highly recommend that one. (Shameless self promotion, but I wrote a fic about that story - I love those comics so much.)
Before COVID, I was reading the following titles:
Star (which is a spin off of Captain Marvel where Riley was pulled into some shenanigans, came back as a hero who was actually a villain)
Hawkeye: Freefall because… Hawkeye being a bit of a fail boat and just generally a good story that pulls in a lot of other Marvel characters
Valkyrie: Jane Foster which is a continuation of her story in the Mighty Thor comics
Captain Marvel
Captain America
Ms. Marvel
Falcon & Winter Soldier (BUCKY WITH A CAT ON A MOTORCYCLE!)
Right now new comics are kind of on a pause and it’s kinda hard to figure out what Marvel is putting out. I know they pushed the last 2 Star and Hawkeyes out on digital.
Looking at my older stuff, the first comic I actually bought was an omnibus of Brubaker’s Captain America where he introduces the Winter Soldier, and then the Death of Captain America where we get BuckyCap. Those will always hold a special place in my heart, and I go back and reference them sometimes when I’m writing fic.
If you’re looking for a more fun dynamic, I really loved Tales of Suspense: Hawkeye and Winter Soldier which is a short run team up where they’re trying to track down someone who is killing Nat’s old enemies (I have not and will not read Secret Empire Nazi Cap  but all you need to know is that Nazi Cap kills Nat during the run, which they cover in the beginning). Her two ex boyfriends think she may actually be alive and go looking for her which leads to some amazing snarky interactions between the two.
Winter Soldier: Second Chances is a more recent short run where Bucky is basically running a witness protection situation for reformed villain minions that are trying to get out of the life. He ends up taking a kid under his wing and trying to figure out how to help a young kid being forced to kill.
Nathan Edmondson’s 2014 Black Widow run with Phil Noto is hands down one of my favorite story and artwork combos. Not only do you get to see Nat being a bad ass, you also get to see her in her daily life and trying to make a difference. This story brought in a ton of additional characters from Bucky and Clint to X-23 and Frank Castle, and even a surprise cameo by Anderson Cooper!
Here’s the obligatory rec for Matt Fraction’s Hawkeye run. Amazing, loved it but you can read a million other people’s rave reviews.
One run that I actually really enjoyed but kind of started on a whim was Chelsea Cain’s 2016 Mockingbird. I started reading it because I was interested in Bobbi Morse on Agents of SHIELD and DAMN did I find out how much of a badass she was on her own. The story starts out with her going to a SHIELD clinic because she’s got to get weekly check ups and is kind of starting to get some superpowers. Clint and Lance Hunter, her ex’s, are featured in the story.
Charles Soule’s 2014 She Hulk run is another favorite. I love extremely competent lawyer Jennifer Walters who just happens to also be 7 foot tall emerald green She-Hulk. The story follows her starting at a new practice and trying to balance her drive to help the little guy with needing to charge billable hours. It also intersects with the old man Steve storyline when she represents him in a wrongful death suit facing off against Marvel’s other superhero lawyer Matt Murdock/Daredevil!
If you’re looking for a non-superhero comic, Ed Brubaker’s Fadeout is my favorite. It follows WW2 vet and Hollywood screenwriter Charlie Parish who wakes up from a blackout in the same room as a murdered starlet from the film he’s working on. This has the feel of an old Hollywood film noir who done it and talks about PTSD and the Red Scare. I do want to put a trigger warning on it that it does touch on sexual abuse but it isn’t explicit.
These are just the ones that come to mind off the top of my head. If I was at my apartment I’m sure I could pull a lot more of them.
As an aside, I know that getting into comics can kind of be cost prohibitive. While I 1000% recommend going in and supporting your local shop, I also know sites like GetComics.info are helpful if you just want to browse before diving in. I may have gotten a few off there myself when money was tight or I wasn’t super invested in a character. Just make sure you have a CBR program so you can read them once they’re downloaded.
Hope this helps! And happy reading!
