Y/n POV.
My world felt like it was shattered, yet I didn't cry for a good minute. I was too shocked – too sad to move, let alone cry. Everything had just stopped, but then it all came crashing when Steven's words had really hit me. Nell was dead. My best friend, gone.
It felt like my heart was collapsing in on itself, but at the same time tearing itself apart. I felt like someone had kicked me directly in the chest, as if any oxygen in my lungs was ripped out.
That's when Steve had told me how she had died, she had hung herself. It only got worse and worse the more I thought about it. Then I realized, Luke doesn't know. I mean how could he, he had broken out of rehab the morning after she passed, Shirley had told me. There's no way he could know. I try to pull myself together as much as I can to even attempt to say anything.
"Stevie… Does Luke know?"
I question with a shaky voice, only met with silence from Steven as if he had forgotten to consider the fact that Luke would be more affected than most of us. I hear a heavy hearted sigh from the phone.
"Fuck… No. No, he doesn't. I don't even know where he is or how to reach him."
Steve explains, I nod, tears swelling in my eyes. I know where he'd be, well I can take a pretty damn good guess. Luke's rehab was closest to my place so I decide I need to be the one to find him since I know Steve isn't living as close anymore.
"I'll go get him. You're probably too far to find him in time, if he has.. y'know.. I could probably find him before it get's too bad."
I hear Steven sigh again, he knows it would be better for me to find him. I start looking for my purse and my car keys, staying on the call with Steve as I don't want to feel alone right now and I can tell he doesn't either.
"That means you'll have to be the one to tell him…"
Steve explains, I let out a shaky and nervous sigh, processing that he's right, I can't just tiptoe around the fact that his twin sister had just hung herself in the same house his mother had also died at her own hands in.
"If he hasn't relapsed, which I seriously doubt, this might push him to it. So just.. don't let him out of your sight and stay safe."
Steve stammers to the end of his sentence, realizing what he had done by giving Luke money, possibly helping him indulge in his vices on purpose.
"I'll be as safe as I can be and yeah, I'll watch him for a while, he can stay at my place so don't worry."
I attempt to reassure Steve but I'm also extremely worried and it shows in my tone so I doubt it helped much. As much as I don't want to, I hang up and get into my car.
After maybe twenty minutes of searching I find Luke. He's pacing up and down the sidewalk, mumbling as he's counting on his fingers repetitively, he's scared. He looks worse for wear, he's battered and bruised, he's clearly not okay.
"Luke..?"
I call out, catching his attention, his focus snaps towards me. I quickly get out of my car and walk up to him, he continues to mumble under his breath.
"I couldn't save her. I… I couldn't save her. I'm so sorry.."
He sobs as I pull him into a hug, his voice quiet but raspy. He hugs be back tightly, after a few seconds I let him go and he stares at me, waiting for me to speak, waiting for some kind of lecture because he broke out of rehab but I wasn't angry right now.
"You're clean right now, right?"
I ask in caution as his eyes widen slightly, realizing how he must look right now. He thinks about what he should say right now, looking for the easiest way to explain or to make me worry less.
"N.. no, I'm ninety days clean.. I swear… I.. I swear. Ninety days free, remember?"
He stuttered to the end of his sentence with a sense of urgency in a hope that I wasn't already disappointed. He's actually clean, which you wouldn't be able to tell based on how he looks right now but even though he's more himself there's still something wrong, he's shivering and incredibly uneasy.
"Luke, are you okay?"
I question out of pure concern, knowing that it's a loaded question when it comes to him. I place my hand on his shoulder and he stares down at the ground, trying to organize his thoughts. You don't just break out of rehab for no reason only to end up pacing in the streets with no shoes and looking like you were hit a bus or two. He says nothing, he reaches up and rubs the back of his neck, he must've got pretty hurt last night.
"I-I'm freezing cold, my body feels so stiff and my neck hurts like a bitch… It feels like really awful withdrawals but so much worse and I'm clean. I swear I didn't do anything last night… I swear."
Luke stammered as he leaned in a bit closer so I could hear him fully, I need to tell him about Nellie. I suck in a cold yet heavy breath, mentally preparing myself for what's about to happen. I don't know if I can do it without breaking down myself.
"Luke… It's Nellie, she's… She's. Uh.."
I struggle out the words but I can't get myself to say it, there's something inside of me deeply wanting it to not be real, for this just to be some vivid nightmare that I'll wake from, and Nell will be back at her house, sleeping peacefully and perfectly fine when I wake up – but it isn't a dream, I can't just wake up and everything will be okay, I can't just wake up from what feels like an endless nightmare because I'm not asleep, no matter now much I desperately want this all to be a dream… It's real and I can't just ignore it. Luke needs to know.
"She's… Dead. Nell died last night."
I cry as Luke freezes up, tears roll down his cheeks, he looks like he's completely crumbling.
"What…?"
He chokes up, unable to say anything else. Doing this felt worse than I thought it would, it didn't tug at my heartstrings, it ripped them out stomped on them. He stares at me as if I'm about to tell him it's just some sick joke, I wish I could, for his sake, but I just can't.
"Can you just please get in the car, I think you should stay with me until the funeral. We can talk about it more when we get to my place."
I stare down at the floor, unable to to look him in the eyes. He nods slowly as I open the car door for him. He gets into the car, still counting on his fingers but this time more agitated, more frightened.
We get back to my place after a while of sitting in a depressive silence in the car, neither of us felt like there was much we could say through minds clouded with tragedy.
He walks into the guest room and just sits on the edge of the bed unmoving. He sits, slouched forward with his head in his hands as he sobs quietly.
I walk up to the door and knock a few times. The knocks echo through the mostly silent house, aside from the faint sound of Luke in mourning.
"…come in."
Luke responds as I open the door and walk up the bed. I sit next to him, placing my hand on his shoulder. He stares back at me, while I try to find any words in the mess that is currently my mind to try and help him, to comfort him.
"I'm not gonna lie to you and say everything is okay, because it's really not… But… I'm here for you. I don't know how to make the pain all just go away but what I do know how to do is listen and offer any comfort I can give. We don't need to talk about it right now but when you're ready I'll be here."
I sympathize, my voice brittle and low as Luke gazes at me as he, tears still flowing down his face. A quiet thank you is all Luke's able to say in the moment, his voice remains hoarse.
"Do you mind if I sit here for a while?.. I don't really want to be alone right now."
I request, as Luke sits up and rests his head on my shoulder, his hand resting on my knee.
"Me neither."

I promise I'll look for you in a thousand life times.
Olivia crain x Fem!Reader
Warning: fluff, depression, anxiety, headaches, delusional, pills, sleep deprivation, sleep talking, nightmares, fainting, slight argument, sleep talking, pre kidnapping, almost suicide, etc.
A/N: all my THOHH fans tap in please, justice for our liv🥺. Btw this fic is a spoiler for anyone who hasn't watched the show yet, and most of this fic falls around episodes 1,4,6,8,9 and 10.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The crain family was.... different..... they weren't like other families and they knew that too. They weren't the normal family you'd meet on a daily basis. When you started working for the crain family as a babysitter, you heard many stories about the family.
How the claimed to see things. That Olivia was a witch. That the family believed in a whole lot of creepy stuff and even acted weird. That didn't bother you though.... why should it?... no one's normal, absolutely no one, no matter how hard they tried.
So what if the crain family acted a certain way, or maybe they just had special gifts that weren't quite understood by others.... and that's fine.
You met with the family for dinner three years ago, you met Nelly or rather Eleanor, theo or Theodora, Luke, steven and Shirley. They were decent kids. Kind, sweet, caring, funny even.
Something you admired about the kids were their passions. Eleanor tea cup parties, Shirley nature and taking photos, Luke adventuring or protecting Nelly. And then there were theodora and Steven who were always off doing their own things or studying something fascinating.
____
Then there was Olivia crain, Olivia was something else.... her aura was soft. She was pretty and smart and very caring and kind towards you. She loved her kids with everything in her.... her heart clung to them. She even said once that nothing or no one will ever be able to stop her from even dying for them.
The floor boards creaked as you made your way into the kitchen for breakfast. Slowing rubbing your eyes as the sun glazed partially through them from the sunset window above. You turned the corner one eye open, suddenly you bumped into someone. You stopped dead in your tracks and opened your eyes fully to see Mr. Hugh walking away quickly with a cup of coffee in his hands.
" good morning Mr. Hugh-" but before you could completely finish your sentence he was already gone from your sight. It's only then as you stood there you felt how cold the atmosphere setting was... as if someone had died.
You had only caught a glimpse of his face and something deep within told you that something was wrong this morning. You thought nothing of it and looked at everyone in the kitchen having breakfast.... except not happily.
" good morning, my loves" you spoke walking around the table to kiss every child on the forehead. There were mumbled and grumbles said back to you as you made your way into the pantry. You then noticed that you haven't seen Olivia. Which was quite strange since she's usually the first one up to help you a little bit with the kids.
You clicked the kettle and stood with your back against the counter as you waited for your water to get hot. You inspected the kids once again and something gaved you the chills. You sighed as your eyes landed on Nellie who was finding it hard to eat her scrambled eggs since they were very hot. You walked over to her and crouched down on your knees.
You tucked a strand of hair behind her hair and brushed down her fly aways. She smiled at you and you returned it.
" did you sleep well?" You asked her and she nodded chewing on another piece of her food. The real reason why you weren't the one to make the kids breakfast was because you were up the entire night with Nellie. Her nightmares are the worst. She claims she sees this lady that she calls " the bent neck lady" above her every time she opens her eyes at night.
The poor girl was scared completely out of her shadow last night, shaking and shivering in your arms, sobbing even. You sang her a little song and caressed her cheeks and brushed your fingers through her hair until she eventually had the courage to fall asleep and believe that you'd protect her.
You had told her parents above it, Olivia more times than Hugh since she's less busy and has more time to listen, and after all she was Nellie's mother but they both brushed it off as Nellie being at the age where she could handle herself.
Which is true, she was a big girl but she was still even scared of the dark, which is normal for a kid but Nellie was absolutely terrified at night, and that isn't normal. And then you had to sit at Shirley's bedside and hold her hand because she was sleep talking. Ever since the family moved to the hill house they've all been acting strange. Seeing things. Hearing things. Feeling them even. Mostly Olivia. She was the one you'd feared for more. Even more than Nellie.
" but mommy and daddy fought this morning and yelled" your brows quirked as your body stiffened. Hugh and Olivia..... fight?.... yell?.... again not normal. You tried not to make it too obvious to the little girl that you were surprised but instead tried to comfort her.
" Nellie! Don't tell her that!" Theodora shouted and Steven spiked back.
" theo don't talk to her like that! She's been with us longer than the others!" he spoke.
" so?! that doesn't mean she gets to know all of our business" theodora bit back as she stormed out, Steven quickly following behind.
" no but she's seen and heard us more than anyone has!" His voice got lower as they went deeper into the house where you could no longer hear them speak. You paid no mind to her though, she was always the feisty one, which was something you admired.
You stood there silently before Luke and Shirley placed their plates into the sink before walking past you shyly. You looked down at Nellie, searching her eyes for an silent answer.
" daddy wants mommy to go to her sisters house for the weekend because he thinks she's crazy" the little girl whispered before getting up from her seat and hugging you with tears in her eyes. You comforted her the best you could, rubbing her back and whipping her tear stained cheeks.
" it's ok Nel, I'll talk to your mom and dad ok?" She nodded and quickly exited the room, you stood there for a minute trying to process everything before you sighed deeply. You cared for Olivia and her wellbeing, especially for her mental state as of now. Olivia wasn't well. It's as the house was a vampire, sucking and draining every bit of happiness from her, plus the kids not being able to be comfortable in the house bothered her even more.
You noticed Olivia's pills in the kitchen counter cabinet, you walked towards the cabinet and took out the bottles, the one for her headaches, depression and anxiety. You walked back up the stairs and down the hallway into Olivia's and Hugh's bedroom. You weren't allowed in there but you needed to speak to Olivia urgently.
You knocked twice and waited for her to answer but there was complete silence, no approaching footsteps, no body shifting in sign of answering the door, nothing. Dead and spine chilling silence. As if there was no one at all in the room. You decided to twist the knob to see if it was unlocked, after discovering so you pushed the door and entered.
You then saw Olivia standing infront of the window in a beautiful red dress with flower patterns on it, her hair neatly tucked in her curls not a songle one out of place. What she was looking at remained unknown. You stepped further into the room and closed the door behind yourself. You waited for her to acknowledge your presence but it seems as if she never heard you enter at all.
You walked up even closer to her and noticed that her pupils were dilated all the way and there was only a thin line of crystal blue could be seen. Absolutely no sign of life in them.
" Olivia?" You called out her name softly, not wanting to snatch her from whatever mental state she was in too quickly to make it become prolonged. She slowly turned her head into your direction and smiled softly before her head snapped back to the window fast as if she was a cat haunting it's prey.
" do.... do you hear that?" She asked as she took slow steps closer towards the window.
" hear what?" You replied. At this point you were beyond worried for Olivia, she needed help, maybe Hugh's idea wasn't as bad after all.
" the whispers" she spoke up, before you can ask what whispers she shushed you by placing a finger onto your lip, tilting her head to the side as she listened again.
" there it is again.... they're calling Nellie's name..." her facial expression was unreadable, you couldn't tell if she was being serious or if the voices have really gotten the best of her. Tears filled her eyes as she leaned on your shoulder clinging to your shirt tightly with her fists.
" don't let them take her away please!" You held onto her tightly, gently letting both your body's fall to the ground. You brushed the hair away from her face and realized that her eyes were closed. She fainted..... you muttered ' shit ' before you lifted her body off the floor and placed her onto the bed.
Suddenly she gasped loudly as if she had drowned and had now been given CPR. You grabbed the back of her head and quickly sat her up against the head board. She sighed before softly started chuckling. She turned her head towards you and smiled. She raised her hand to your cheek and carefully caressed your skin.
" are you scared? Your pale" she chuckled biting her lip. You playfully touched her arm but you quickly had to pull it back. Olivia was as cold as ice, as if she wasn't alive. You decided to keep quite, she already has enough stress as we speak but she needed to know the truth.
" I think that you should atleast re think Hugh's offer, we only want wants best for you liv" you spoke clearly without a doubt In mind. Olivia's facial expression changed drastically as she looked at you as if she was totally flabbergasted.
" you believe him.... you think I'm crazy? You think that theses pills are what's allowing me to keep my sanity?" Her voice was hoarse and full of hurt.
" no! Of course not Olivia! But I want you to be able to be sane and think for yourself without the pills" she cut across you, stopping your sentence.
" but I am! Don't you believe me?!" She was getting railed up and that's the last thing you wanted to happen because it often doesn't end well.
" I do! But your not well Olivia can't you see?!" She paused, her eyes flickered as a tear rolled down her cheek. Her hand that was rested upon your thigh shook and you both looked down at the same time to look at it and she immediately looked away.
" I only want what's best for you Olivia. So please just for two days, get some fresh air, go to an amusement park or go on a nature walk" you spoke, gently caressing her thigh.
" i won't let them take Nellie away from me, not my baby" she spoke softly, leaning closer towards you.
" no one is gonna hurt them I'm right here, I promise" you whispered back, she kissed your cheek and rested her head on your chest before sighing. You both stayed like that for a while before she spoke up again.
" I wanna wake up... so badly.... why can't I just wake up...." She kept repeating this phrase over and over again and you could see the color draining from her eye. She's going to get a headaches. You quickly grabbed her compression pillow, her eye cover fabric along with her pills. You calmed her body by placing a hand on her abdomen then pushing the pillow behind her neck then placing the fabric over her eyes.
You tapped on her lips and she open her mouth to take in the pills, you brought the glass of water to her lips and held a hand under her mouth as she drank the water. She coughed slightly before turning her head away. You put down the cup and sat back down besides her. Eventually you fell asleep, this sudden tiredness washed over you as you fell into deep slumber.
You awoken in your room that the Crain's had provided for you in the house. There were thuds and loud bangs along with screaming being heard from the upstairs. You rushed up thinking someone may have broken in. Running upstairs that's when the sound of glass breaking and Olivia's screams can be heard.
" olivia!?" You call out as you ran down the hallway, you ran and ran until you felt as if you were out of breath, no matter how much you ran the hallway seemed to become longer. You could hear running footsteps everywhere.
" stop trying to take my babies away from me!" You heard Olivia scream in agony. Who's taking the kids? You tried to follow her voice as best as you could. All you heard and could hear was your thudding footsteps against the hardest of the wood and your racing heart beat.
A hand grabbed you by the waist and forced you to stop, you turned around to see Hugh, he had both Nellie and Luke lifted up in his hands both of them staring at you petrified.
" y/n we have to go now" you looked at him completely confused.
" no time for questions, the other kids are already outside in the car" you shook you head and stepped back. In the car? What about Olivia..... is Hugh the one who's taking her babies away?... before he can grab your hand again you bolted away from him with full speed. You called out Olivia's name but there was no answer, only that dead silent of the time when you entered her room. Remember the dead look in her eyes and ran faster.
You looked everywhere for her before searching upon the balcony. And there she was..... in her night gown about to leap off the edge. You swiftly grabbed her hips right before she could but it was too late.... you both went over. Falling in slow motion graciously. You could feel Olivia's fear, not of dying but leaving her children alone. Leaving Nellie and Luke out in the dark as they said. All your memories in life flashed before your eyes but the only person on your mind was Olivia.
Right before your body could hit ground you pulled her onto you. Your body hit the ground with a loud brutal thud. Your ears began to rang as you heard Olivia call out your name and touch your face, her hands still very cold. She grabbed the back of your head and placed it on her lap as she ran her fingers through your hair sobbing.
You smiled softly up at her, stretching your weak hand up to caress her cheek.
" why are you crying my love?" You asked and she sniffed.
" why didn't you go on without me?"
" how could I? " you asked, and she began to cry more and your eyes fought to stay open. You knew you were dying but you needed five more minutes for your last words. Olivia cradled your body as close as possible to hers.
" I couldn't let you die alone liv" you whispered as you slowly felt all your organs shut down one by one. Her eyes filled with more tears, clinging onto your shirt she whispered no over and over again.
" guess what...." You breathed as you breath began to leave your body.
" what?" She whispered.
" I believed you.... I always did..... you aren't crazy..." You gasped before tightly holding onto her hand.
" no, please, I'm so sorry" she muttered repeatedly as she left kisses all over your face.
Olivia will forever be grateful for your sacrifice and she'll continue to live for you.... because you'll forever live in her. Olivia did wake up.... you woke her up..... she stopped having her headaches. Nellie missed you the most. How you'd stay up with her and help her cope with her nightmares, how you'd swore to protect her.
" dont be, I promise I'll look for you in a thousand life times" and with that sentence you took your last breath. Olivia felt as your hand slowly realased hers as your body relaxed. She cried out loudly tears clouding her vision she tightly hugged your body.
There's nothing more you wanted than to die for Olivia crain. Noting more you wanted than for Olivia crain to not be dead. To not lose herself thinking that everyone thought that she was crazy or needed to see an psychiatrist or mental help. Because all the really needed was someone to listen. Someone to hold her. Be there for her..... she no one was. She gaved comfort but never received it in return.
It's sad that not even Hugh or her kids or Carla never once sat down with Olivia and talked to her like the normal human being she was..... they all thought she was crazy. But never once did they stop to wonder if she was truly ok. To actually listen to her for once. Because behind the dreams that she has, behind the headaches. Olivia was just a human being who wanted to find herself, who just wanted to wake up.
She'd die for her children. While someone else died for her. Olivia was heartbroken as she attended your funeral. Seeing how your mother broke down. She'll forever think about the opportunities you'd miss, her silly joke about pandas not liking macaroni, the family dinners, Shirley's random photos on a Sunday, Nellie silly tea parties, Steven's book speeches, theodoras crazy conspiracy theories, Luke's wild guess as to how trees can re plant themselves in outer space.
Most of all Olivia will miss your eyes, the way they'd lit up when she sang or when you were around the kids, your gigles when she told you a joke or when theodora chased you around the yard for Halloween. Your kisses, your hugs your words of affection and affirmation. She sighed as she pastor continued the eulogy. She looked outside the church and saw you.
You waved and winked.
" I love you" you whispered before flying away. She smiled.
" and I'll forever love you" she whispered back.
Hill house will forever have its history written in black and it's past owners reminded of the lives it took. But we must cherish our memories made because the rest is just confetti. Hill house.... not sane, stands against its hills holding darkness within. It has stood so for a hundred years and will stand so for a hundred more, and thoses who walk there..... walk alone, sorry and thoses who walk there walk together......
A/n: sorry not sorry to all the hearts I broke with this because where are all of the Olivia fics on here?!?!? Not even one🥺and my baby deserves better?!? Tbh if I was in the TV show I'd hold livs hand and jump with her😤. Anyway hope you enjoyed!

Preference: The Haunting of Hill House.
How They React to You Hugging Them from Behind by Surprise.
CHARACTERS: nell crain, luke crain, steven crain + theo crain
REQUESTED BY: @winterxisxcomingx
TAGS: n/a
AUTHOR’S NOTE: enjoy!
Tumblr media
( NELL CRAIN )
Tumblr media
given that nell is so afraid and lonely, a hug from behind is well needed
she’d kinda be a bit jumpy or even just not react to it at first
but she’ll sink in the feeling of physical touch knowing that you’re there as her protector and that you’re giving her your undivided attention
she’ll hold your arms as if you’re slowly slipping away from her
_
( LUKE CRAIN )
Tumblr media
luke loves them!!
but because he’s taller than you he’s practically looking down like he’s some giant
he’d kinda startle a bit because he’s been acting up lately, so a surprise hug from behind is what you think he needs at the moment
it’s not the cure to fix his situation entirely, but he appreciates having you hold him
_
( STEVEN CRAIN )
Tumblr media
he’s gonna react by stroking your arm when it’s wrapped around him
if he’s in a good mood he’ll turn you around and it’ll be his turn to hug you from behind
if he’s not he’ll cover it up and just stroke your arm
steven barely does that but it’s not like he doesn’t like doing them, he’s just caught up with his writing and the trauma from the house and his siblings
_
( THEO CRAIN )
Tumblr media
theo is usually the one that gives you the surprise hugs from behind
so when you do it to her, she’s like uhh ????
she knows she’s better at it, though but she thinks it’s cute
afterwards theo will tug you and try to tickle you, she’ll also lead you to her bed

hill house
title: hill house
pairing: none, female crain!reader
word count: 9.1K (longest one yet bbysssss)
warnings: spoilers, mentions of death, suicide, intense scenes and images, language, mature themes explored by ‘the haunting of hill house’, also timelines that don’t match up that great.
notes: thank you so much to anyone who reads this. i’m sure the audience is going to be very small, but i absolutely poured my soul into this for a while and you simply looking at this fills me with joy. feedback is appreciated!
summary: to the remaining five crain siblings and their father, the death of a close family member seems to bring a renewed remembrance of the nightmarish hill house that haunted their childhoods.
Tumblr media
She was the youngest. This was one of those indisputable facts that Y/N was forced to cling to in life, such as the intangible fact that she would never be mature as Shirley or as smooth as Theo, but she was the best listener out of all of them.
She was the youngest, and she would always be the youngest. What Y/N Crain never expected, however, was that she would become the youngest of five Crain siblings.
There was supposed to be six of them, eight with their parents. Mom, Dad, Steven, Shirley, Theo, Luke, Nell, and Y/N. Eight was the magic number, she had been sure of it all 32 years of her life. She would use eight to brag about how big her family was in elementary school (counting Aunt Janet instead of Mom, but no one needed to know that), just as Luke would find himself counting to eight every time he got too anxious or scared. It was supposed to be six siblings, at least until Hugh Crain had called his youngest daughter to tell her the news, to tell her that her sister was gone. Y/N hadn’t understood him at first, but she found out later how normal that was.
It had been late at night, and Y/N had found herself restless and annoyed. She had shot up at three o’clock in the fucking morning, feeling like she couldn’t breathe. For the smallest moment, after her eyes had opened, the air just wouldn’t move into her mouth and she worried she was dying. Less than a second passed before it rushed in, and her lungs filled up and let it out. Maybe she had been having some sort of a nightmare, Y/N had reasoned to herself in the cold emptiness of her apartment room. Like the ones that Nell would get about the Bent-Neck Lady. A shiver ran through her just thinking about it, and she suddenly became more aware of her surroundings than she had been. The moonlight from the window pierced her view, bringing her back to earth and leading her to her bedroom door. Slippers on her feet, Y/N Crain made her way away from her warm bed and into the unknown.
She had put on water for tea, a trick her aunt had taught her what felt like forever ago and moved slowly to her counter in search of something to do. She hadn’t brought her cell phone with her from her bedroom and didn’t see much point in going back to get it. ‘Phones make it harder to sleep,’ Theo had pointed out to some degree of what Y/N suspected must have been hypocritical. ‘Something about the lights and radiation and shit like that.’
Her eyes fell on already opened mail, a copy of a magazine she had been meaning to read, ads for windows and preschools to potentially work at in the area, her ongoing shopping list, and other various papers she didn’t have the energy to sort through. Halfheartedly, she picked up the magazine and flipped through the pages.
From behind her, the tea kettle began to already let out a growing whistle, the sound coming much sooner than she had expected it to. Pulling her robe closer, she shuffled towards the sound and pulled the kettle off, the sound dying down and the steam dispersing. For some unknown reason, she thought back to her middle school science classes.
The cup was light blue and warm. Her mind was fuzzy as she moved to her spot at the table, pushing aside the unchosen reading materials and placing her teacup and magazine down.
Then she was awake. Blinking, she felt the feeling of blind confusion for the second time that night, realizing that the hard surface under her arms and head wasn’t her pillow, but the table. She had fallen asleep, and the cup of tea remained practically untouched.
Some asshole outside was playing music, she thought as she turned to glance out the window. It was loud. It was loud and it was coming from inside her house. Murderer? Kidnapper? Pop-up DJ? Clarity came and with it a single word: phone.
Who the hell was going to be calling her at this hour? Sighing, she pushed the chair away from the table and made her way to her bedroom. Sure enough, the screen was lit up and the phone itself was buzzing in place. ‘Dad,’ it read in bolded white letters, and Y/N felt the instinctual drop in her stomach that accompanies a late-night call, especially one from her quiet father.
Her hands were already shaking when she picked it up. “Dad?” The word came out less calm than she had intended. For a minute, Hugh Crain was silent on the opposite end and Y/N hoped that it was a mistake, that her father had never meant to call her. She was close to hanging up when his voice buzzed from the other end.
“Are you sitting down?”
“Yes,” Y/N lied. “Yeah, Dad, what’s up?”
“Y/N, honey,” The other end filled with breathing for a moment. “Nell’s gone.”
“Gone? I-” Any fear in her mind froze for a moment as she processed his words. “What do you mean gone, Daddy?” The younger woman’s voice was small and childlike.
“She killed herself. Nellie’s dead.” His voice cracked, and Y/N found her own voice couldn’t do even do that. It was completely gone. Somehow, this seemed worse than the numerous endings she had seen in her head. Nothing specific ever came to mind, but visions of horrible accidents and even death floated in the back of her mind. Y/N couldn’t have imagined this. Never, not in a million years.
“No,” The word broke the silence that had accompanied the confirmation. She wished she had sat down and her feet stumbled for footing. Landing on her bed, her hands moved to her mouth. “No, no. Nell. Nellie. Not Nell.”
It was too much at that moment. Y/N felt like she was going to explode, but she couldn’t breathe enough to do so. Her breath caught in her throat, her eyes began rapidly blinking away tears. Her father said something to her from far away, but she couldn’t hear him. She couldn’t hear anything past the buzzing in her ears that seemed to want to block out all other sounds, leaving her feeling small and alone. She could feel the distinctive lump in her throat growing, urging her to a complete breakdown. “Dad, I have to go,” Y/N spoke, though unable to hear herself talk. Hanging up before he could respond seemed the only way to save both of them from Y/N’s breakdown, and she opted to instead have it alone on the floor next to her bed.
Nell had fallen into the role of big sister so quickly and so perfectly. It was as if she was born for it, possibly even more than Shirley or Theo had been. Any minutes she could spend watching Y/N were minutes Nell considered a success, although Y/N never knew this. All that she knew, and all she needed to know, was that Eleanor Crain had loved her so much, and now she was gone.
Y/N didn’t remember when her mother had died, but if she did she would know that how much she cried then was nothing compared to her screams now. Perhaps she hadn’t understood it as a small child, with her h/c hair still in the braids her mother had done them in before she had gone to bed. Her pajamas wrinkled and warm, her eyes sore with sleep as she rubbed them. She had been sleeping with Theo that night, at least when it all happened. It was a strange pull that brought her to Theo that night and not Nell as she had gone to often times before, but it seemed to make sense to Y/N in her young age.
That brought about another thing Y/N Crain didn’t know, nor would she understand, was that she would have been in the Red Room with her siblings if she hadn’t had a nightmare, one where they sat around their mother’s coffin as it rained and that her nightmare had effectively saved her.
If not Nell, Theo was the one Y/N went to when she was scared. This lingered in her mind, somewhere behind all of the pain, and she grappled for the phone. Y/N knew Theo’s number by heart, as she knew all of their numbers, but she went first for the contact containing it and paused. What would she say? Y/N didn’t think she actually wanted to talk, and she was almost positive Theo didn’t either. It would be nice to not be alone, but if she called Theo she would have to be alone after anyway. The pain of hanging up from that call might have been worse than she felt now.
With a click, the phone’s screen went black. Y/N sighed a rough and uncomfortable sigh that bounced around in her throat as tears pushed against it. There was nothing left to do except cry, because what else can you do? After losing someone so close, so suddenly, and so horribly, there’s no way to process that. This must have been what Nellie felt like after her husband died, Y/N thought, before the picture of Nell she formed in her mind brought tears to her eyes once more.
She would have to book a flight. It hurt, but one could only spend so much time wallowing before you have to move on. Isn’t this what being an adult was like? When Olivia had died, Y/N couldn’t remember seeing her dad cry at all. Granted, there wasn’t much she could remember about that day, but Y/N remembered how every single Crain around her had been so strong. And now, even she had to be strong.
• • •
Y/N Crain remembered very little about leaving Hill House, but she remembered almost all of the day they had arrived. The days in between blurred, and her four-year-old memory struggled to keep straight what was important and unnecessary. She remembered the buttons that Nell loved and cared for with such insistence, the time the siblings had all shown up to breakfast with their shirts backward to see if Mom and Dad would notice (Y/N was too giggly and practically gave it away), or the dresses that their mother would wear. No matter how hard Y/N had tried, however, she could never remember the warning signs towards her mother’s death, the horrible storm that shook Hill House, or the day Luke thought he saw a zombie in the cellar.
The wallpaper in the hallways was etched into your mind, the greens and blues that resonated and showed up in your most vivid dreams. ‘One could lose themselves in the memories of that house,’ Y/N reasoned, and yet she remembered almost nothing at all.
As a child, she had followed Theo around through the dingy halls of Hill House. Theo had always been vocally annoyed by the younger Crain and the constant shuffle of her feet behind her, but secretly Theodora Crain was incredibly proud. And who could blame her? The twins had each other, Steven and Shirl seemed to get each other, and Theo liked to keep to herself, but where would that put Y/N? Nowhere fair, surely. So Theo was the obvious answer, she would just have to sacrifice her free time for a while.
“Theo,” She remembered asking her from a yard or so behind her, Theo’s gloved hands swinging back and forth in her view. “Why can’t we get a puppy?”
“Mom’s allergic,” She replied in the way that only Theo seemed to be able to do, without pause or thought but lathered in confidence. “Besides, I think a dog would be kind of annoying.”
“Annoying?” Y/N repeated, turning the word over in her mind. “Why would it be annoying?”
“I don't know. They’re loud and get mud everywhere.”
“Daddy said they do poop a lot,” She added, ever eager to please Theo. Agreeing with her point seemed like the easiest way to do so.
Theo huffed. “I guess,” Y/N supposed that Theo did a lot of huffing, at least from her experience with the sound. Sometimes her huff was more of a sigh, but Y/N didn’t understand the difference yet, so she assumed they were all huffs.
“We could get a fish,” Y/N continued with the idea. “Stevie said he wanted a fish, ‘member?” The word ‘remember’ was long for Y/N to say when she was excited or nervous, the times when her voice sped up and words blurred together, so it came out more like ‘membeh’.
“Fish are dumb,” Theo said, walking towards the black, spiraling staircase. “They don’t do much.”
With her dreams crushed, Y/N nodded solemnly. “I guess.” She joined Theo on the staircase, her small hand gripping to the railing. She would never admit it, but this staircase scared her, at least slightly. With its steps painted black and the handrails always feeling cold, Y/N could swear she felt like she was a single misstep away from falling every time. Theo seemed unnerved, skipping up the staircase with such speed that Y/N struggled to keep up. With a final huff, Y/N reached the top steps after her sister, although the two went in different ways. While Theo turned to the left, Y/N’s eyes spotted the younger children’s biggest mystery of Hill House: The Red Room.
The name encompassed most of what they knew about the mysterious room. The door was a vibrant red, with the same lion on the handle that the other rooms had. Hugh, even with the help of Mr. and Mrs. Dudley, had failed to produce a key that could open the door. It hadn’t admittedly been high on his list of priorities, and the younger children seemed to be having a good time guessing what was inside. They would get there eventually and likely be disappointed, so their father had figured there was no rush.
The locked door had confused Y/N. Sure, she had encountered things that wouldn’t open before, but then she would just ask her parents or Steve and it would open eventually. She understood the concept of not being allowed into a room, but she knew that they were allowed in here.
Her legs brought her to the right. “Let’s go in,” Y/N urged her older sister, her hand jittering the door. “Help me open it.”
“It’s locked, Y/N. We don’t know what’s in there. We can’t open it.” Theo said from a distance.
Y/N frowned. “Mommy was in there.”
“No, she wasn’t. It’s locked.”
The younger of the two turned to look at Theo, her own stubbornness coming out to match Theo’s. “Yes, she was. I saw her in there. Luke and Nellie, too.”
“Okay, well go ask her. She wasn’t in there.” Theo crossed her arms, her eyebrows raised. This was one of the many times she was right -- she was sure of it. Y/N liked to be stubborn lots, but she wasn’t usually right. Theo, on the other hand, seemed to have an ‘intuition’ (a big word that she had caught from a book Olivia was reading to her) when it came to these types of things. As if to drive this point, she added: “I know what I’m talking about.”
Y/N paused before walking towards the staircase. “Mommy?” She called out, unsure of where Olivia had planted herself in the large house. Her mother responded that she was working on somethings, but Y/N knew that was just an answer to let the young girl follow her voice.
They arrived in one of the bedrooms, their mother with her back facing the door as she scrubbed furiously at a stain in the corner of the hardwood floor. “Mom, Y/N thinks that you were in the Red Room,” The name felt natural as if she had been saying it as long as she had known colors. “But it’s locked.”
Olivia paused, turning to look at her two daughters. They stood in the doorway, Y/N squished against her older sister’s legs as they fought for space. It took their mother a moment to realize what Theo was talking about, but when she did, a laugh crept out of her lips. “No, I haven’t been in there,” She meant to continue, telling her daughters about how the moment that she or Hugh got in there, they would all get a proper look around and see that it was probably nothing to get nervous over. Before she could, Theo muttered something to Y/N about being right and walked away, probably to hide away so she could read in peace.
“But Mommy, I know you were in there,” Y/N tilted her head, and Olivia smiled at the action. It would be years before Y/N would grow out of it, moving her head left and right whenever she was confused. “I know it. I saw you with Luke and with Nell. You were having a tea party, ‘member?”
Olivia Crain looked into her daughter’s eyes, watching with curiosity as she insisted. The ‘special’ talk she had given Theo remained fresh in her mind, and Y/N’s ‘again?’ played in the back of her mind. “Can I give you another really big word?” She spoke softly, gesturing for Y/N to come closer. Her daughter complied with a nod. “Okay, this one is déjà vu.”
“Dé-jà-vu,” Y/N repeated slowly.
Olivia smiled. “Déjà vu is just a way of saying that something you see, or hear, or experience, is something you remember, but you just don’t know how,” Y/N nodded, her eyes not leaving her mother’s. It was these images that Y/N would cling onto later in life when Olivia was long gone. Her dark brown hair, practically black, falling in waves over her shoulders. Eyes bright and soft, her face aged but perfectly so. Her mother was perfect. “I think-” Olivia began slowly and hesitantly. “I think that when you walked into Hill House for the first time, you felt déjà vu, right?”
“I think so.”
“Well, I think that’s because you’re special.”
Y/N was conflicted by the word. Her parents used it with such praise, but sometimes Steve or Theo would say it sarcastically, with a negative connotation as they teased their siblings. She repeated it, feeling stupid as she continued to say the same things her mother had said but unsure of what else to say. Looking back, Y/N remembered so many of the vivid points her mother had brought up as the two of them crouched in the corner. They had blown her mind; sent her reeling. The reason why Nell always seemed to understand things the others didn’t, how Theo had to start wearing gloves, her mother’s headaches and Shirley’s sleep talking. Special. There was no other way to describe it without sounding dumb, and Y/N appreciated her mother giving it a word so many years back. Y/N was special, just as her sisters were, and just as her mother was.
Whatever Olivia was, Y/N was fine with being. “I think we’re going to get into the Red Room, and to celebrate we’ll have a tea party. I think your déjà vu just gave us hope, huh?” Olivia’s voice finished in a pleasant whisper, and Y/N nodded without even thinking about it. When her mother looked at her like that, with so much love and pride, how could you not?
Politely, Y/N said thank you before moving out of the room to look for better things. Olivia watched her daughter leave, her small bare feet leaving momentary prints on the wooden floor before vanishing like mist. Her youngest was growing up so quickly, she realized. Moments like this confused Olivia so much, the mixture of joy and pain as she thought of how only yesterday it was Steven being born, and tomorrow they would all be gone and through college. ‘We have to enjoy the time we are in now,’ Olivia reminded herself before turning back to the stained carpet. ‘No one knows if we’ll ever get to come back.’

Y/N Crain did a lot of thinking on the plane, trying to distance herself from the woman and her toddler to her immediate right, and the man who kept moving from his seat to the bathroom in the aisle next to her left side. In all of those thoughts, Y/N came to this conclusion:
The house had always wanted Nell. From the moment the family had laid its eyes on it, it knew it would be her. But it could never get the young girl, not then, because she had all of them. Her family. Their poor mother, in her beautiful green and blue dresses and sun hats was vulnerable. Y/N was there, and all of your siblings were there, but the burden of motherhood was too much for Olivia. She was weak, though none of them would ever know it, and the house took her before it could ever get to Nell.
But it did get to her, and now Eleanor Crain was gone. Y/N’s beautiful older sister, with her buttons and long hair, her converse and sweaters, her visions and her worrying. Y/N didn’t realize this until later, much later, but every time she ‘dreamed’ of the house, Nell was there too. Sometimes the others would be there — Shirley leading the way or Steve telling her to be careful. But Nell was always there, watching Y/N with smiling and empty eyes.
She had been thirty-one, six months before Nell would die and she had fallen asleep into Hill House. It was crazy how much Y/N dreamed about it, about the details that she unknowingly got correct, down to the number of patterns in the carpet under her feet. In these dreams, she was never younger than her own age. Y/N floated somewhere between who she was then and who she could grow into, but her siblings were always adults. They would act like children sometimes, and Y/N’s mind seemed to blend fiction with reality.
This time was different.
She had arrived at an empty exterior. It was an empty shell of a nightmare, the windows dark and the door opened just enough for her to see it was dark in there too. In this dream world, it never occurred to Y/N that she may have been in danger. She was only curious, so she kept walking. Her feet froze at the entrance. The door pushed out winds somehow colder than her surroundings. Every bone in her body urged her to run away from the door, telling her that she wouldn’t like what was inside. With cold hands, Y/N pushed the door open and stepped inside.
It was like walking into a different house entirely. Where Hill House had looked dark and intense from the outside, the interior was warm and well-lit. Her eyes traced the staircase, the ceilings that seemed to blend into the sky. Slowly, her feet brought her along towards the center of the room. Her siblings were standing there, Y/N realized once she had leveled her vision. Steven, Shirley, Theo, Luke, all standing in one line that blurred near the end. There were more people, she just couldn’t make out faces.
All of the Crains were dressed in white. White dresses, white suits, white shoes. Y/N’s own outfit, if she had thought to look at it, was a faded white as well. They smiled at her warmly, and she felt comfortable. Y/N always felt comfortable in these dreams, never frightened or unsure. She was confident in her actions, walking her to greet her eldest brother at the head of the line. His hands were crossed in front of him, his whole face smiling. The bags under his eyes were gone, and he had seemingly left the tired author look behind him.
“I saw her,” Steven smiled at his sister. “I saw her.” He leaned down to give her a hug, warm and comforting. Y/N secretly thought that Steve gave the best hugs, although Nell had been a close runner-up. Steve just had that very loving and caring feel that came from a lifetime of being the older brother. ‘He was never the youngest,’ she realized. ‘He never got to be me.’
From next to her, Shirley pulled her sister in for a warm hug, her eyes smiling in the way Y/N hadn’t see them do for quite some time. As they embraced, Shirley leaned into her ear. “Nellie’s in the red room,” Her voice was soft and comfortable, alright with the unusual statement. Y/N nodded as if she understood, moving onto Theo.
The dark-haired sister paused when Y/N moved in front of her. After looking Y/N over, Theo seemed satisfied enough and pulled her in for a hug as the other two had done. “Oh, Y/N,” Breaking away from her, Theo took Y/N’s hands in her own pale, gloveless ones. She never wore gloves in these dreams. “I touched her. I touched Nell, and I touched death.” Her blinks were slow and calm, her voice as jovial as everyone else’s.
“I knew it,” Luke admitted from next to them. “I never thought about it, but I knew it without touching her or hearing her or seeing her.” Y/N nodded and pulled her brother in for a hug, wrapping her arms firmly around his. His face was clean, his hair brushed. Luke’s words were terrified, but his eyes smiled at her. Y/N couldn’t help but smile at the dream of her older brother, almost too sad to know she would move on again.
“Y/N, honey,” The voice of her father spoke from next to the two women, and Y/N turned in the direction of the older man. When she saw him, however, Hugh Crain wasn’t older at all. He was the same age as the rest of the Crains, the age that the house remembered him as, and he looked brighter than Y/N had ever seen him look before. He extended a hand to her shoulder, his lips turning up in a soft smile on both sides. He looked calm, all-knowing. So much like her father, but a foreign being all the same. “Nell’s gone.” Y/N nodded, smiling softly back to him.
In that second, it was if she understood it all. They would see Nell in her casket, in the same autumn-colored dress she would find herself in over ten years later. It wasn’t sad: they were all smiling. It wasn’t sad because it was a dream, it wasn’t real. “Y/N,” A voice floated down from next to them, a voice like a song if it could talk. Y/N Crain gave her father one more smile before turning her head and letting her feet walk.
Their mother stood at the end, smiling. Y/N’s breaths continued on normally as if her dead mother wasn’t in front of her. It was a dream, Y/N reminded herself. Only a dream.
Olivia Crain smiled at her youngest daughter. “She came home,” She whispered softly and simply, although Y/N heard every sound.
“She came home,” Y/N echoed, mesmerized by this dream of a mother.
“You have to see Nell,” They spoke from behind her, their voices in unison. When she turned back to look at them, her siblings were all children. She guessed that they must have ranged from young teens down to kindergarten ages, although her parents remained the same. Her mother with her soft dark hair, never to be cut. Her father with his blue eyes that seemed to have dulled from this young man to her current image of him. “You have to see Nell.”
“I have to see Nell,” Y/N turned around slowly, the smile painted on her face. She didn’t know where Nell was, yet she wasn’t lost. There was no rush as her feet moved slowly, her family wordlessly trailing behind her. She walked right of the staircase, the short hallway lit with white Christmas lights, twinkling on and off in rotating sequences. On the other side, they shot off in both directions, lining the top of the room and twirling around the statues that kept her sister company.
Nell Crain lay in a bed in front of all of them, the white sheets neatly made under her body. She was dressed in red, starkly contrasting against the monotone white of your sibling’s outfits. She could have very well been asleep, but her chest was still. She looked fake like a doll would after she was lovingly dressed and her hair brushed.
This was not her sister, but she smiled despite herself. “Nell,” Y/N whispered. The body before her didn’t move to answer, but she hadn’t expected that it would. The younger of the two reached down a hand -- a shaking hand, although she hardly remembered this -- and touched Nell’s shoulder, wrapping her grip around it as if it could wake her up with a squeeze.
“She’s not sleeping,” A young Theo spoke from behind Y/N, suddenly closer than the others had been. Y/N turned to look at her, although her sister’s eyes fixed on Nell.
Olivia stepped closer. “She’s awake now. Nellie’s awake.” In the fleeting moments of a dream, Y/N looked at her mother. It was when she saw her here that she realized the extent to which she missed her. Y/N had grown up motherless for the better part of thirty-two years, and she spent every moment of that time missing Olivia. She hardly remembered the last few days, when Olivia hadn’t been herself but some evil version of their mother, brought on by the wicked house. The memories Y/N had of Olivia Crain, although few, were all good. This was chiefly because she was a good mother. A great mother.
She stood before Y/N now, her dress spilling out in folds of cloth across her legs and onto the floor, the sleeves flaring out only to tighten around her wrists. Her dark hair starkly contrasted the outfit, falling across her shoulders and back as if it was carefully placed there. Her mouth moved, repeating the last phrase Y/N had heard her utter, although no sound came out. Turning to where Nell had been, Y/N saw only darkness. It surrounded her, as it always did near the end, and Y/N woke up.
• • •
Y/N had landed late at night, and gone straight to get a rental car. Shirley had called her the night before, to talk and check-in, and also to tell her that she had a room she could stay in at her house. It was an extremely nice, extremely Shirley thing to do, and Y/N appreciated it more than words could say. The rain that had been falling as she landed turned quickly to a storm and Y/N arrived at her sister’s house wet. She waited in the car for what felt like minutes, scared of going inside. Shirley had warned her that they would be setting everything up -- including Nell. She didn’t want to see her sister, not like this. It was a little funny, in a dark way, that Shirley was the one with a funeral home. She had been the one so scared to see their mom in her casket, which Y/N remembered so vividly because her sister being scared had scared her. Y/N had been attached to Hugh every moment she could since they left Hill House, and she had been holding her father’s hand as he had tried to convince Shirley to go up. They had all been scared, but none of them as much as Shirley.
Once she got out of the car, she found herself hurrying more than she had been to get inside. The rain was coming down in bullets now, pounding against her jacket with such forces she felt she was practically soaked. Y/N hadn’t thought of bringing an umbrella, so she would just have to push through it.
She rung the doorbell, thankfully waiting now under the cover of a porch. Shirley opened the door, Theo standing not too far behind her. Y/N sniffed from the cold, smiling at her older sisters. Her only sisters.
“Y/N, hey,” Shirley spoke Y/N’s name first, her voice pleasantly surprised at the younger Crain’s appearance. Her mouth moved as if to habitually ask how Y/N was doing, before realizing the situation and moving in only for a hug. It was Y/N’s first hug since she had found out, she realized as Shirley wrapped her arms around her. They stood there for a moment, and Y/N had to remind herself to take deep breaths as her eyes watered. In the presence of her siblings, she felt younger than she did every other day, and she had to push to not fall into the role of younger sister waiting to be comforted. “Steve’s going to be here soon. He’s bringing Dad and Luke.”
“How is Luke?” Y/N asked, voicing the worry she had been carrying for Nell’s twin.
Shirley paused. “He wasn’t in rehab when they found him.” She said simply, her eyes darting between her sister’s to gauge her reaction.
Y/N’s mouth formed an ‘o’, silently realizing what that meant. Nell had fucking died, and Luke had been off shooting himself up. She couldn’t help but feel bad for her brother, though. Nell and Luke always had their special connection; their ‘twin thing’.
From out of the corner of her eye, Y/N saw Theo step closer. Y/N moved to her next, Theo forced to balance her almost empty drink as she was met with a hug from Y/N. It wasn’t nearly as warm or as long as the one she had shared with Shirley, but that was what she had expected from Theo. “Hey, kid,” Her voice was warm as she stepped back, crossing her arms enough to balance her drink. “How was your flight?” “Fine,” Y/N said, looking around at her surroundings. It was dimly lit, the blue walls making the room feel big enough that she almost didn’t see the front of the room, the shiny casket balanced near the wall.
Shirley had followed Y/N’s gaze, and said softly, “You should go see her.”
“Who?” Y/N said dumbly, before muttering that she was sorry. Who else would she be talking about, who else could she be talking about? These were the female Crains now, Y/N realized. Shirl, Theo, and her. No Mom, no Nell. Slowly, her body turned the direction of her dead sister, seeing the top of her face peeking out from above the edge. “Oh, God. Fuck.”
She wished that either of her sisters would say something, keep her away from the casket. If she saw it, especially if she saw it as she had in her dream, that would make it true. More than anything, Y/N was praying that it was anything but. There hadn’t been much to say, however, and they all knew it was time for Y/N to do as they had done. “She looks really nice,” Shirley tried to ease her forwards, using the voice that she would bring forward when the small children were scared of the funerals. “You’ll feel better when you do.”
“I know,” Y/N brushed her sister off, taking her first step forward. “I have to see Nell,” The five words were uttered unconsciously, and only to herself. Her walk was slow and deliberate as if she could see it happening in some cheesy movie. Nell came more into the view as Y/N walked, scared to see what she knew was in there. Nell was in there, she saw when she reached the edge. Oh God, that was her Nellie. The same one who would give her two dozen hugs every time they saw each other, the same one that Y/N thought of every time she saw a button. “Shirley, I-” Y/N began, but her voice faltered. Her vision clouded, and she turned around blindly. “Shirley, I wanna go. I don’t wanna see her,” Y/N’s fragile voice echoed in her sister’s ears. Y/N walked clunkily away from her dead sister and towards the two remaining sisters, clutching her own torso as she cried. Shirley met her halfway, catching Y/N in a hug. The younger began to cry harder, Nell echoing in her mind. There was no reason to look at her any longer than she had; Y/N not only knew her sister’s face but she knew the situation.
Shirley held her sister for what felt like five minutes. She had looked to Theo three times, but the first two the middle sister had been too engulfed with the bottom of her drink, and the third time Shirley Crain had realized there was nothing she could say or do to make it better. It was one of the hardest things as an older sister, having to assess the situation and leave it as it was. She held her sister because that was all she could do.
By the time Steve and Luke entered, the three had sat down. Y/N had calmed down, her eyes still red and puffy but her voice steady. Shirley stayed next to her, letting Kevin fuss over the minor details of Nell’s appearance. They were discussing their father softly, the three sisters realizing that he had never been to the funeral home before. The doorbell broke the bubble the three had created, although Kevin jumped to get it. He was taking the reins, Y/N noticed. That was good. Shirley needed that break.
None of them stood up. No one was eager to anything, which she had understood. “It’s funny, Nellie was always trying to get us together in one place,” Shirley spoke in her still voice, clearly uncaring at the familial appearance. “Even Dad tried for years,” Steve said something from the doorway, and the sisters stood up. They would face this burden together, they had agreed silently.
Theo, who was the last to rise, said something from behind Y/N that she could hardly hear.  Her eyes were focused on Luke and Steve, their coats wet from the rain. Shirley made small talk, and Y/N could tell it was more forced than any conversation the two of them had shared that day. She was still mad at Steve for the book, Y/N reasoned. The younger patiently waited for a little behind her sister as Steve gave her a hug, fiddling with the sleeve of her jacket. She was nervous and hardly understood why.
“Hey,” Steve moved to her next. “You okay?” It was clear that he had noticed her tear-stained eyes, although she couldn’t blame him.
Hugging her oldest brother, she answered honestly, “No.”
Steve softly chuckled. “Fair enough.” He moved towards Theo, who walked past him.
Luke was next. He didn’t look high, you had noticed cautiously. In fact, he looked only as bad as the rest of the siblings, which was alright by Luke Crain standards. “Lukey,” Y/N extended your arms out and embraced him. He was cold under her grasp, and she wished that she could make him warm at that moment. Words left her brain, unsure of what to say as they hugged. They released, and Y/N could already tell his eyes were on Nell. She could watch him but refused to follow his gaze any further than when the chairs began.
There was nothing that dictated who should go first between twins. For the rest of life, it’s supposed to be the oldest. Steve used to always joke about the five younger Crains planning his funeral, and it’s a worldwide regret when a child dies before the parent. Steve especially could see this in Hugh’s eyes, no matter how much he tried to brush it off or hide it. But Luke and Nell were twins. How were they supposed to know who ended in the coffin first?
Certainly not like this, Luke realized as he stared at his sister. Nell looked so serene, not like she was sleeping necessarily, but as if she was at peace. The harder he looked, the less she looked like Nell, however. Maybe the Nell lying there looked like the hundreds of pictures they had of her, but that wasn’t Nell. She was never some picture, and she wasn’t supposed to be some memory. She was Nell, and this was not Nell. Maybe it was better that way, for her to look like a memory of Nell and not his dead twin sister.
From somewhere far behind him, lost in the emotions of it all, Shirley cleared her throat. “Dad’s not with you?”
Steve nodded. “Uh, he’s still at the hotel. He told us to go ahead. He, uh, kept changing his clothes.”
Y/N joined her siblings. “He’s nervous.”
“Yeah.” Steve looked at his sister. She looked more tired than he had ever remembered her seeming, her hair still damp from coming inside. His author’s mind formulated the words to match these pictures, the adjectives coming out sad and forlorn. Watching his siblings hurt like this was painful to Steve. He could hardly bring himself to look over at Luke, he wanted to tell Y/N to go take a needed nap, to tell Theo to try some water instead of the drink she was pouring herself. Steve even wanted to hug Shirley, who he hadn’t been on the best of terms with, and tell her it was going to be okay.
Y/N spun out of his view as Luke rushed by, unable to even look at his twin sister in this state. No one moved to help him, because no one knew how. Luke needed to be on his own, and that was okay. Shirley brought the attention away from the awkward moment. “He seems a lot better than I expected.”
“Yeah,” Y/N agreed. “I don’t know what I expected, but I guess... higher?”
“I know,” Steve said, nodding. “I think he’s actually clean a little while now.”
“So what was with the jailbreak?” Shirley asked.
Steve shook his head. “Long story.” Not sure he wanted to tell it, he moved away to follow his brother. Y/N moved almost in sync with him, as if his movement had triggered her feet instantly.
She let Steve do the talking. Everyone seemed to form in a circle around the two as they talked for a little, finishing with a hug. He knew how to do it, and all of the other Crain siblings recognized that.
• • •
Hugh Crain arrived a little later, and things didn’t go as smoothly as Y/N or any of the others had hoped. Steve and Hugh were fighting it out, Shirley had just found at that Kevin had accepted the book money, and Theo seemed to be along for the ride. Someone had put buttons over Nell’s eyes, Steve had blamed Hugh, and the power chose the perfect time to go out.
Things had only gotten worse from these, with Steve telling his father that the wrong parent had died, and Nell’s coffin came tumbling down. It took a moment like this, one so powerful and heartbreaking, to stop their fighting. Nell never liked it when they fought.
Y/N had taken the silence to speak. “ I need to tell you something,” Y/N spoke quietly, but loud enough for her family to hear.
“Y/N-” Shirley began, her voice cracking.
“I see things,” Y/N blurted out, and all five Crains looked towards the younger woman. “Future things.” She glanced from face to face, examining their reactions. Shirl’s eyes widened and her gaze seemed to focus like a camera at her sister as if she could see into her mind if she tried hard enough. Luke seemed to sit up a little straighter, his shoulders tensed and his head pushing forward. Steven looked as Y/N had expected him too — eyebrows raised, his position shifting to balance on both of his feet. If the circumstances had been altered, she almost would have giggled as his hands moved into big-brother-lecture-position on his hips. Theo just stared at her, face unmoving as she took a swig of her liquor. It was brought down with careful precision, her body swaying a little with the movement as she looked at Y/N, almost as Shirley had done. Theo’s gaze was more assertive, more final. Where Shirley wanted to see what was inside Y/N’s head, Theo was reading it. Hugh’s face remained focused and kind, nodding slowly. It was nice to look at him, unusually calming.
“Future things,” Shirley repeated slowly. It took a momentary pause for Y/N to realize that this had been a question, and she nodded. “What kind of future things?”
The h/c woman was stunned for a moment. For some stupid reason, she hadn’t expected they would ask what you saw. “Lots of things. Um, somethings are pointless. Like I saw Theo falling asleep during an AP exam a while back, or us picking out bridesmaids dresses with Nell.” She swallowed. “But then there’s... bigger things.”
“What do you mean? What is this supposed to mean?” Steve scoffed, his voice confused and brotherly.
“What kind of things, Y/N?” Luke asked softly. For a moment, Y/N looked to him without being as sure as she had been before. Unsure if she wanted to tell them, unsure if she wanted to reveal thirty-two years of safekeeping to anyone, even her siblings.
Oh well.
“I saw Steve’s book.” She gestured in his direction. “I saw Shirley get married. I saw Nell,” Y/N froze, suddenly too scared to say what she had really seen. In their eyes she could see that they all knew, however, but she looked down and croaked out, “I've seen Nell’s funeral.”
What Y/N Crain had neglected to mention that when she walked into Hill House for the first time, she had said “Again?” firmly and distinctively. Olivia had smiled, although you didn’t see it, as if she knew something secret. She did, of course, but this was something Y/N would never find out from her, never find out at all for a long time. ‘It was as if she had been there before,’ Olivia had explained to Theo later on. ‘As if she knew the house from somewhere else.’
The siblings looked stunned. Theo was the only sibling to regain her cool composure, but even her face focused more on Y/N as she breathed heavily for a moment.
“You what?” Luke’s voice was cracked, and Y/N almost heard the echo of the boy he had been.
Closing her eyes for a moment, Y/N continued. “It was different, but we were all there. Mom was there.” She opened her eyes, glancing from person to person. “Nellie was lying down, and no one was sad. But it was a funeral. It had to have been.”
Silence fell for a moment. They were all processing, thinking of the implications brought with the news. “When?” Theo spoke finally.
“What?”
“When did you see it?” Her voice was soft, the cold softness that only Theo could produce.
“Um, a few months ago?” You guessed, struggling to remember. “Half a year, maybe. At most.”
“Why didn’t you tell us?” Shirley’s voice, which had been harsh and bitter minutes earlier was now kind again. She had sat up a little straighter, her shoulders pushed back and her face a little paler than it had been before. Y/N never thought it would be this easy, never in the millions of minutes she had thought about telling them. Maybe they all knew, deep down, just as Y/N suspected they all knew about Theo.
“I was scared,” Y/N admitted. “I had hoped it wasn’t true. But they always are.”
“Always?” Luke repeated.
Y/N nodded. “I’ve had these ever since Hill House. I don’t know, I hoped that maybe this time I-I was wrong.”
“I think that’s one hell of a coincidence,” Steve said.
“It’s not a coincidence,” Hugh spoke up, and Steve rolled his eyes as he looked towards his father. “Your mother didn’t think it ever was, at least. She was hardly ever wrong.”
Y/N jumped back in to prevent another father-son argument. “I know it’s hard to believe. I’m sorry. I just needed to tell you guys. I thought you should know.”
Theo nodded. “We knew.” No one argued or said anything.
• • •
It was of the most stressful nights of both Y/N and Theo’s lives. The two had gone over to Theo’s place, bringing a few bottles of alcohol with them. Y/N Crain didn’t drink often, but when she did it was hard liquor. She supposed it was because when she needed it, she often really needed it. And with her mind flashing back to the fall of Nell’s coffin, the same moment she had felt her own chest fall.
“I feel like I shouldn’t have said that, not then.” Y/N admitted to her sister. The two were sat in chairs, practically side by side as they held clear cups in their hands. “It was stupid.”
“It wasn’t stupid,” Theo said. “What’s stupid is that you felt an obligation to tell them at all.”
Y/N chuckled. “Easy for you to say. You’ve already sworn off telling anyone.”
“No, I haven’t sworn off telling anyone. I’m just not ready.”
“When will you be ready?” Y/N asked, looking towards her sister.
Theo paused. “I don’t know. I’ll know when I need to.” She met her sister’s gaze before adding, “You did.”
Y/N chuckled slightly. There was a comfortable lull in the conversation, the air filled with silence and the soft scent of booze. “I feel like I’m drowning,” Y/N admitted out of the silence. “In all of it, all of this shit.”
“It’s okay to feel overwhelmed.”
“No, no, I know that. It’s just-” The words froze on her tongue and she sighed. “I miss Mom.” The admittance was soft. “Maybe she was an asshole and maybe she wasn’t, but I love her and I miss her.”
Theo nodded. “None of that was her fault.”
“It wasn’t.” Y/N said confidently. “I mean, we don’t even know what shit went down in there. We may never know, Theo. And you know, I think I’m okay with that.”
“Ignorance is bliss.” Theo nodded, her silky glove rubbing circles on the glass. “Fucking bliss.”
“Fucking bliss,” Y/N repeated, mocking the action like a small child. “Not always, though. I’m glad I’m not ignorant about Mom. I’m glad I remember her, at least a little.” Y/N coughed after downing her drink.
“It’s good to remember,” Theo said, the way Y/N used to say ‘member’ lingering in her mind.
“Yeah,” Y/N chuckled, looking down at her legs as she crossed them. “Yeah, I guess it is.”
Theo nodded as if expecting more. “Got anything?”
“I remember this one time when we were all going somewhere, on a trip or something,” Y/N began, twirling the bourbon in your glass to watch it swirl. “Mom was sick and we were all so confused. Why can’t Mom come? Why does she have to stay at home? We were so angry and so confused and Dad -- poor Dad! -- he had to explain that we would be fine without her, that it was time for us to go and that she was sick. God, I can only hope we calmed down.”
Theo Crain froze but said nothing. Her youngest sister, Theo realized, had misremembered the most disturbing night of their lives, and perhaps she was better for it. Maybe it was better as a trip that they all took, hidden in a place where Mom’s problems were the flu or a cold, and Hill House was only a house.
Only a house. she had told herself for years that it was only a house, just wood and concrete, and glass. The wallpaper was just a fresh covering, the paint a disguise. That there was nothing in those bedrooms, nothing in the cellar, nothing in the dark that could hurt her. And if it could, she had her family there. Her brothers would calm her down and her sisters would surely be able to take on whatever was intending her harm. In her parents’ eyes, she saw that they would never let it come to that, not willingly. And it never was willingly, not with their mother and certainly not with Nell.
There was some hidden comfort in that thought, Y/N supposed before smiling softly to herself. They had gone away, yes. Even though it had been at their own hands, she knew that it was never their intention to hurt everyone like this. She hoped it wasn’t their intention -- especially Nell’s -- to bring them all together in some twisted way. She would never admit it, but she was going to hug her siblings a little tighter and a little longer when they said goodbye again.
They were Crains, and Crains were as strong as hell. That didn’t take much thinking. You could look to any one of your siblings and see time after time when they had overcome, both individually and as a family. When it felt like it was going to be too much, because it would certainly come to that, Y/N made sure she would be there a little sooner and a little longer.
Looking up at Theo, Y/N smiled. “What?” The older woman said, raising an eyebrow.
“Nothing,” Y/N remarked softly, her eyes turning to the table. She looked back up, adding, “I love you.”
Theo gave her a curious smile. “I love you, too.”
Y/N knew that when her sister spoke, it was final and for all of them. They all loved her, she knew that. It was nice to hear it, to know for sure that she was loved by these people she gave her heart and soul to every day of her life. They loved her, and at that moment, that was all she needed.

Motherly Sister X The Crains | Headcanon
Tumblr media
After the first incident of Hill House, things were rough for everyone
Neither of your siblings were able to be even eat properly for weeks
Like Steven, you didn’t experience the events as hard as everyone else did, so you decided it was your job to take care of them to make up for it
With Nellie, you went online and researched ways to help with sleep paralysis
She didn’t believe it was in her head though
So you researched supernatural ways so she’d still feel safe and in control
Sleeping besides her during storms, using crystals like Amethyst and Black Tourmaline, getting her a nightlight, even giving her a stuffed animal as a lucky charm that she carried to adulthood
With Theo, she became heavily distant and dealt with it herself
So you used little ways to help her, often giving her advice indirectly when you noticed she was struggling, and even having personal conversations to create a better bond
Shirley had difficult with separation anxiety
So you hung out with her and practiced with distancing
Which meant creating a little goodbye ritual, always being on schedule when it came to returning home and constantly giving her reassurance that everything was going be okay
It became easier for her to handle, even before you managed to get your aunt to put her in therapy
With Luke, he kept blanking out a lot
You weren’t sure what to do with him, so you just looked out for the important things
As an example, if he was given a chore, you listened for him in case he was distracted again
Steven was a bit more simple, you just had to be a bit more vulnerable with him to make him feel like he’s being a good brother to you
And with everything that came, you were the glue that held everyone together
Always making sure to update each other, constantly calling to check in on your siblings
Being the first one that everyone calls in case there was an emergency, mainly because they knew you would drop everything for them, even if they were the ones who got themselves in trouble
Usually the scolding came after everything would be settled down and you were sure that they were okay
And when Steven published his books, you were a bit alienated
Mainly by Shirley as you didn’t seem bothered at all by Steven
Having a bit of strained relationship with her, though you didn’t fully leave her life since you still checked up only occasionally
Constantly being the one to help fund Luke’s rehab, even after he ran away and everyone gave up
Ending up as Nellie’s bride of honour, yet not knowing about how Luke tried to go into her wedding
Nellie wasn’t the only one they were trying to protect with this little secret
Your relationship began to grow more distant with everyone after the wedding
Especially during the reunion of Hill House when Shirley started showing how much she disliked the way you kept trying to be the family’s “mediator”
Though you would come together after almost losing your brother and losing your sister
You did lay off a bit with Shirley though
Who tried her best to repair any issues she had with you right after
Constantly trying to be there for everyone after Nellie’s death
Which meant putting more work and time with Luke
And constantly trying to reassure Steven that he wasn’t at fault
Even though they were bit of a handful, you still loved them as they loved you the same

Imagine being there for Luke when things get rough.

Luke X Reader
Being abruptly woken up is something you absolutely loathe, except for when it's an emergency. So when you realize it's your cellphone ringing that's brought you into the land of wakefulness, it's like all your grogginess instantly vanishes.
The number calling isn't one programmed into your phone, but the area code is local so you answer without hesitance. "H-Hello?"
"Y/N? I-It's Luke. I need y-your help."
Holding the phone to your ear between your head and shoulder, you kick off your blankets and scramble out of bed. "Where are you? I'll come get you." Knowing full well that Luke should be in rehab and the number he's calling from is not the facility he was last at, you know something is terribly wrong. You hurry to your closet and pull on pants, then shoving your feet into a pair of random sneakers.
"I-I messed up. My f-friend left and I- I tried to help, but she.. I'm so sorry."
"You don't have to explain yourself to me, babe. Just tell me where you are."
"I'm so- I'm so cold. M-my arms and legs.. they're stiff." His chattering teeth and stuttering voice absolutely breaks your heart. His voice is thick with emotion that has your own throat tightening in response. "It-It-It's like withdrawal," Oh crap, "but I- I didn't use. I wa- I wasn't using, but I- but I feel it anyway. You- you believe me, right?"
"Luke? Luke, listen to me. I need to know where you are so I can come get you."
"Please tell me you be-believe me, Y/N."
You pause by your apartment door, heart pounding and your soul aching for your friend. "I believe you, Luke. Ever since I found you again after all the years we missed together, you never once lied to me. Now where are you?"
Luke prattles off the address to some street corner and what the buildings near him look like, and you quickly grab your keys off the hook by your front door. As you're racing down the stairs, forgoing the elevator completely, the call disconnects. You frantically make it to your building garage and after getting into your car you speed off to where you have an idea Luke's at.
Throwing your car into park near the sidewalk, you leave the engine running and pop the trunk. Climbing out, you grab a blanket before jogging towards your friend who's huddled on a bench. Right away you notice he has no shoes and when he glances up, you gasp at the abrasions on his face.
"L-Luke?"
"I-I'm so cold," he stammers.
The plain tee and thin warm-ups do nothing to prevent the cold from chilling him down to his bones, but his face is sweaty so you have no idea what's going on. Still you wrap the blanket around his shoulders before sitting next to him on the bench and pull him down so his head is in your lap. "It's okay. I'm here now." You smooth your hand over his forehead, fighting back tears as you lean over him to kiss his forehead. "Sshh. I'm here now."
A set of headlights wash over you and you hunch protectively over Luke. Two people get out of the car, but only one approaches. "Luke?"
"H-Hey, Steve. You remember Y/N?"
Luke's older brother stares at you in surprise and you weakly smile at Steven- the eldest of the Crain brothers. "Hey, Steve. Long time no see."
"Y/N?"
"Mhm. Circumstances could be better, I guess. I'm guessing Luke called you either before or after me."
"I wasn't aware you and Luke-"
"We met again in rehab." Steven goes quiet and understanding seems to dawn in his features. You shrug. "I've been seven years sober. I just hang around the facilities to talk to the newbies and offer them some encouraging words."
"I have so many questions, Y/N, but I really need to get Luke-"
"Yeah, no. Go ahead." You help Luke sit up and your heart breaks all over again at his bowed head and hunched shoulders. Steven mumbles something to him before pointing him in the direction of a woman standing near their car, and Luke goes without uttering another word as he rubs at his neck. When Steven turns back towards you, you frown. "Is everything okay?"
Steven sighs. "No. Everything is just so- it's Nell, Y/N. She's dead."
Tears immediately spring to your eyes again. "W-what?"
"It happened yesterday. We'd been trying to get a hold of Luke, but he left the facility and.. Shirley has her now. Tomorrow's the viewing if you want to stop by. Luke's going to need someone he trusts."
You sniffle and nod frantically. "Y-Yeah. I just- I'm so.. wow." You exhale deeply, choking back a sob. "Oh, Nellie."
Steven wraps you in an awkward hug as you work to contain your grief. "I know." After a few moments, he releases you. "I really should get going. I still have to tell Luke before taking him to Shirley's. Dad's flying in as well."
"Of course. Give my condolences to the family and let Luke know I'll be waiting by my phone. I'll see you guys tomorrow."
As Steven turns away you quickly wipe away your tears. Then heading back towards your car, you wave at Luke who's watching you very closely. Steven waves at you as well and you climb back into your car while letting your tears freely fall again before you carefully drive away.
The following afternoon is a tough one. After Steven had taken custody of Luke, you later got a phone call from Luke as he sobbed about his twin and the fact that he wasn't there for her when she needed him the most. Apparently Nellie had hung herself in their old house and Luke kept going on and on about how he felt it- that, that was why his neck and limbs were so stiff. You cried with him on the phone until Steven finally made him hang up, but he only hung up after you promised you'd be there for the viewing that was open to the public.
Suffering through the drive later that evening in a newly purchased black dress, you collect yourself as much as you can as you drive closer and closer to the funeral home.
Then when you finally get there, your heart is pounding erratically as you slowly pull open the door and slip inside. Just inside the door is a small sitting area before you enter the main room where all the chairs and casket reside, and Luke is sitting there among several other individuals. Under the fluorescent lights the markings on his face look a lot worse.
Steven notices you first, you smiling and sheepishly waving before he nudges Luke. Then when Luke spots you, he's up out of his seat within the blink of an eye which startles everyone but Steven.
Luke's entire frame dwarfs you as he wraps you up in a hug and you return the embrace as best as you can. You can feel him shaking slightly and you squeeze him tighter before smoothing your hands up and down his back.
"I wasn't aware Luke had a girlfriend."
Glancing to the side to see who muttered that, you spot the culprit. When you pull free from Luke, you wipe at the corner of your eye while staring at his sister. "Not his girlfriend. Though if I remember correctly, I'm pretty sure you and Nellie married Luke and I when we were kids."
His sister's eyes widen as she stares you up and down. "Y/N?"
"Nice to see you too, Theodora."
She gapes before stepping forward hesitantly and you smile at the fact that she still wears the gloves. When she cautiously embraces you, it leads Shirley to do the same with a watery laugh. She then introduces you to her husband, Steven hugs you in greeting after, and all eyes turn to who can only be their father Hugh.
Time has not been kind to Hugh, especially given what everyone is gathered for, but you still muster up a smile for him. "Hey, Mr. Hugh. I'm so sorry about, Nellie."
"Y-Y/N." Hugh stumbles forward, his hands falling to your shoulders as he looks you up and down. Then releasing a breath he'd been holding, he chuckles softly before embracing you. "It's so good to see you, kiddo. How did you know about-"
"I- I called her last night," Luke says. "Y/N works part-time at the rehab I was at. She e-encourages us to stay on the straight on narrow."
Every Crain looks to you and you shrug. "Seven years sober. All the other addicts look up to me." You see their smiles falter and the pity enter their eyes. "Don't." You shake their head at them. "I messed up. I owned up to my mistakes and cleaned up after all my siblings abandoned me. Mom and Dad were the only ones who stuck it out, and now I'm working three jobs to pay them back for all the shit I put them through."
"You're just one tough cookie, aren't you?" Hugh muses.
"Only sometimes, but today is not about me," you say. "Right now we are here to remember all the good times we had with Nell and celebrating her life. Then later, later you can ask all you want." That seems to pacify the Crain's and one by one they leave to take their seats. Luke stays behind and you glance up at him, reaching up to rub your thumb lightly against one of his abrasions. "You holding up okay?"
"Mostly. Thank you for coming."
"It's Nellie." You smile sadly. "She was my friend as much as you were." Reaching for his hand, you squeeze it before holding tight. "Now come on. Lets go share some of our fondest memories before we say goodbye."
After a very tearful remembrance, tensions between the Crain's seem to explode after all the guests leave. You want so bad to stay and support Luke, but the family has long buried anger that's apparently coming out on tonight of all nights. So after quietly bidding Luke a good night, you take your leave after promising him to call you when he got to wherever it was he was staying.
Nearly two hours later as you're getting ready for bed you get a phone call, but it's not from Luke. It's from Steven and Luke's gone missing, he having taken Shirley's money and Theo's vehicle. They think he's going to slip and you immediately want to help, but Steven tells you to stay put. If worse comes to worse and Luke seeks you out after, they rather have you at home where you can intercept him instead of him wandering the streets again.
Another few hours later and Steven calls. Luke's overdosed.
You so badly want to break down, but you know you need to keep yourself together in order to get to the hospital. So after jotting down what hospital they've taken Luke to, you quickly get dressed yet again and race down to your car. Then driving to the hospital as fast as you can, you park haphazardly before racing for the front desk.
But before you can reach the desk, Theo's intercepting you. "Y/N! Over here."
When you reach her, you grasp her shoulder and make sure to not touch skin. "What happened?"
"It's that house. That stupid, stupid house," she mumbles. You stare at her and she rolls her eyes, huffing. "Don't pretend you don't know what I'm talking about. That house was alive and you know it. We all did, but we didn't want to believe it."
You blink back tears. "I never told anyone, but I saw.." You trail off and clear your throat, shaking your head clear of one of your most terrifying childhood memories. "I just- I get it. Is he okay now?"
Theo's lips quirk to keep them from trembling. "Steve had to revive him. He was- technically he was dead, but Nell- Steven got him up."
"Can I see him?"
"Yeah. Come on."
When you get to the room, the door is already opened. Shirley and Steven are on either side of the bed as they quietly speak with Luke, but when they spot you they both vacate their spots.
"Thank you for coming," Shirley says, kissing your cheek in greeting. "He's been asking for you."
"It's Luke. I'll always be there for him." Shirley smiles even brighter at that and steps out, Steven following her. Then stepping up to the bed, your small smile falters at the sight of the dark bags under his eyes and the needle mark in his arm. "Oh Luke."
"Shh. I'm okay." He tries to comfort you as you start to cry and you immediately reach for his hand closest to you. Sandwiching his hand between your own, you hunch over and lay your head against his abdomen. "I'm sorry. I didn't want-"
You choke on a sob and he quiets down, and you straighten back up. Then wiping away your tears with one hand, you offer him a shaky smile. "Don't apologize. Theo explained," you say.
"Will you stay?"
"Of course."
"Will you help me get my bed back at rehab?"
You huff a quiet laugh. "Do you even have to ask?"
Luke smiles. "I'm really glad we reconnected, Y/N."
"As am I. Now stay put, I'm going to go stock up on snacks before making myself comfortable." Leaning further up over the bed, you lean down to kiss his cheek. But Luke turns at the last second and you catch his lips, and you jerk back in surprise. Your eyes widen and after a moment passes, Luke smirks. You narrow your eyes as you say, "You did that on purpose." He feigns innocence. Then pursing your lips in thought, you eventually sigh. "Hold onto that thought. We need to get you on a good path before we try to pursue anything."
Luke nods. "I'll keep that in mind."
Chuckling quietly, you then take your leave. And outside the room all the Crain siblings are smiling at you.
"Not a word," you tell them as you narrow your eyes.
But Theo being Theo, she just has to say something. "You two are adorable. My younger self was totally right about you."
"Theodora!" You groan. "I just- you- ugh!"
The siblings chuckle as you stomp off, Theo's voice following you. "Love you too, sister-in-law."

the one where she meets his family -luke crain imagine
IMAGINE: Meeting family is always important right? That’s how you determine whether you’re going to spend the rest of your life with someone? Right? It’s a big fucking deal.
[word count: 1902, word vomit, sorry. let me know what you think. i’m thinking of opening up requests, what do you guys think?]
Tumblr media
[gif is not mine, creds to the wonderful creator!]
“LUKE CRAIN, I AM SERIOUS!”
He stifled a laugh as he watched her pace back and forth in her living room. Her hand occasionally running through her hair, he was surprised she hasn’t gotten a chunk out.
“Babe,” he interrupted through her ranting. “They’re going to love you.”
She turned on him and pointed a finger, “You don’t know that!”
This time he did laugh and stood up from his seat and walked towards her. Placing both of his hands on her hips he met her gaze. “Listen, there is not one person in this world that doesn’t instantaneously love you when they first meet you. I mean look at me, I literally fell for you the first time I saw you.”
“There’s a first time for everything, Luke,” she sighed but wrapped her arms around him. She reached up on her tiptoes and pecked his cheek. “And you tripped over me, as in literally trip and spilled all your coffee on me.”
Luke pulled back with a smile, while pinching one of her cheeks he said, “That’s because you were so short that I couldn’t see you.”
(Y/N) looked in trepidation as Luke rang the doorbell. She wiped her hands on her dress, “Just fake confidence, if you’re confident then they’ll think you’re confident.” She mumbled to herself.
“Babe, you’re going to be fine,” Luke’s gruff voice interrupted her mantra. “They’re going to love because I love you.”
She made an unconvincing noise and turned her attention to the door that was being opened. When it was pulled back she was met with a beautiful woman who had a large smile on her face. “You must be (Y/N)!” She exclaimed as she walked quickly to the couple. “I’ve been dying to meet you.”
The woman hugged her and (Y/N) awkwardly hugged her back. “I’m Nell, Luke’s twin sister.” She spoke when they pulled back from each other. “Come on, everyone wants to see you, especially mom.”
She followed Nell into the large entrance, glancing at Luke who had a massive smile on his face.
Nell stood back as (Y/N) first met their mom and dad, who had a smile on their face. “You must be (Y/N), I’m Olivia, but you can definitely call me Liv. It’s lovely to meet you.” She turned to her husband, “This is Hugh.”
(Y/N) smiled shyly, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear, “Thank you, it’s so lovely to meet you as well. Luke has told me everything about you.”
Luke watched as the love of his life interact with some of the most important people in his life. He watched as his father nodded silently at what (Y/N) was saying, as his mother watched with a large smile on her face.
One by one she met the Crain siblings, Steve and Shirley who gave her a polite greeting and made small talk until another woman came into the room.
“This is Theodora,” Nell introduced, when her sister gave her a glare, “or Theo as she prefers.”
“Hi, Theo,” (Y/N) nodded at her, knowing from Luke that his sister didn’t liked to be touched.
“You’re even more beautiful than Luke described,” Theo smiled at her warmly, she turned her attention to her brother. “Careful, I might just steal your girl.”
“Theo,” Luke rolled his eyes and pulled (Y/N) back to him.
Theo just raised her arms and smirked at her brother, walking towards her other siblings.
(Y/N) chuckled at the siblings playful banter and huddled closer to Luke. “Your siblings are so lovely.” She turned her attention to them, “And are all of you so goddamn attractive?”
Luke let out a laugh, earning glances from his siblings who were talking quietly between themselves.
“The Curse of the Crain family, being attractive,” Luke responded despondently. “I’m afraid that it will be passed down to our future children, I hope you’re okay with that.”
(Y/N) pretended to be in thought for a while and pouted. She sighed loudly, “I guess that it’s okay.”
“I just thought you should know,” Luke rubbed his stomach, gazing at (Y/N) under his eyelashes.
She smiled, playing along with her boyfriend, “You mean, you’re?” She questioned, as she pointed at Luke’s stomach.
“I didn’t want you to find out like this,” Luke pouted.
(Y/N) placed her hands on Luke’s stomach and rubbed it with her thumbs, “I can’t believe it.”
“I’m sorry.”
When both of their gazes met each other, they burst out laughing. Luke pulled her and hugged her tightly. “Fuck, I love you so much.”
The siblings watched as the couple laughed with each other, eyes and smiles brightly shining. They all shared a look and nodded. Nellie’s eyes looked around the room and found her mother’s, standing inside the kitchen doorway. She looked at her mother who had a fond smile on her face.
As they ate dinner, Luke watched fondly as his girlfriend interact with his family like she was already a part of them, which she was if you asked him. He watched as they told stories of him when he was young, Steve and Shirley surprisingly offering the most embarrassing ones.
When they were starting to wash up, Olivia called him. Giving (Y/N) a quick kiss on the cheek and leaving her with Theo, he walked up to his mom. “Follow me, my dear.”
Luke followed his mother, confused, as they reached his parents bedroom. He watched as his mother pulled out an antique looking jewellery box. She motioned him to sit down next to her and he did.
“When you were younger, you had a knack to look through my boxes, you and Nellie often did that,” Olivia spoke softly, a warm smile on her face. “One time, when we were moving here, you found this box,” she gestured to the one on her lap. “You were looking through it with this smile on your face and you came across this.”
His mother held up a beautiful antique looking ring, “This was your grandmother’s.” She placed the ring in her son’s palm. “You came across it that day and I remember you told me that you wanted this ring to give to someone when you were older. You said that you were going to give this to your soulmate when you found her. You made me promise that you were the only one that would get this special ring because the person you’re going to marry would be the most special person.”
Luke gazed at the ring in his hand and remembered the memory fondly.
“Mommy! Can I have this, please?” Luke called as he saw his mother walking into her room. “It’s so pretty.”
Olivia kneeled down and smiled at her son, “Of course you can, sweetie.”
“I’m going to give this to my soulmate when I find them! Just like daddy gave you your ring!” Luke pointed to the ring that adorned her hand, then went back to the ring he was holding. “My soulmate is going to be the most special person ever, so I’m going to give them the most special ring in the world!”
She smiled fondly at her son, who had the brightest smile on his face.
Luke then gasped, forcing Olivia to look at her son worriedly. “You must promise me that you’re not going to give this to anyone, mummy, I want this one!”
Olivia let out a small laugh and hugged her son tightly, “I promise that when you find the one, I will give this to you.”
“I’m giving you that ring now,” his mom’s soft voice broke him out. “Because I know that you know, she’s your special one.”
He looked at his mother who had a knowing smile on her face. “She is, isn’t she?”
“I’ll go start up the car, babe,” Luke kissed her and went out of the door.
“It was lovely to meet you (Y/N)!” Choruses of farewells from the Crain family rang in her ears.
Nell walked her to the front door before they could get any further she called out (Y/N)’s name softly. (Y/N) turned back to the woman, a smile on her face.
“Is everything okay, Nell?” A worried look took over (Y/N)’s face as she saw Nell’s uncertain look.
She bit her lip and looked at (Y/N), who was close to fussing over the youngest Crain member. “I just wanted to thank you,” Nell softly started. “For making Luke happy, I haven’t seen him this happy ever since we were kids and it’s all thanks to you.”
(Y/N)’s eyes began to water at Nell’s words. “I don’t know what to say, Nell.”
“You don’t have to say anything, I know that you make him so happy and I will be forever grateful towards you,” Nell pulled (Y/N) into a hug. “I just want to tell you that Luke loves you very much.”
When (Y/N) pulled back, Nell saw the confused look on the younger woman’s face. “It’s a twin thing,” Nell winked. “Now go, I’m pretty sure that Luke will kill me if I keep you for another second.”
Bidding her farewell, she gave Nell one small smile and walked to the car. Once inside, she gave Luke a kiss. “I love you so much.”
Luke smiled and kissed the back of her hand, “I love you too, sweetheart.”
“So how did it go?” Patrick asked as he saw (Y/N) venture off to the bathroom. “Was it as bad as she thought?” He chuckled.
Luke didn’t reply but did chuckle into his beer.
Patrick nudged him, “Come on, mate, do I need to open a tab tonight so she can drink away her sorrow?”
Luke shook his head, he pulled something out of his trousers pocket and placed it onto the table. He watched as his friends eyes almost bugged out of his head.
“What the fuck?”
He smiled at Patrick, “It went completely the opposite way (Y/N) thought it did. Mom gave it to me before we left.” Luke smiled as he watched (Y/N) come back with a bowl full of wedges. “Mom told me that they instantly knew that she was the one as soon as she came in.”
“Jesus,” Patrick sighed exasperatedly. “You two know that you’ve only been dating for a couple of months right?”
“When you know, you know,” Luke countered back. “I knew from the moment that I met (Y/N) I was going to marry her.”
“Disgusting,” Patrick teased as he sipped on his beer again.
Luke punched his friends arm which earned another chuckle from Patrick. He turned back to (Y/N) and as she approached closer he subtly took back the ring from the table and placed it inside his pocket.
“Why are we hitting Pat? I mean I’m always down to physically maim him, but why this time?”
“He’s just being an idiot,” Luke kissed her forehead as she sat down. “Thanks for the food, babe.”
“Do you think it went well? From your perspective?” She mumbled as she chewed on a piece of wedge.
“They love you,” Luke spoke softly as he traced her hand with his. He kissed her forehead softly, with his other hand he placed his hand on top of his pocket, “Trust me.”

Lights passing. Houses and people flying past in a blurr. Your knee nervously bounced up and down at a fast pace. Your fingers fiddled just as nervously.
Steve, you and someone from rehab were driving through the city to pick up Luke. You didn’t quite remember the name of the rehab lady and you felt bad about it, but your mind was in such a hazy and anxious state that you could only think about Luke.
It was only a few hours ago that Steven had called you to tell you that your best friend had died.
The familiar sound of your ringtone rang through your apartment. You were in the middle of going to the kitchen to get something to eat, but you turned around at the sound of your phone ringing.
“Hey Stevie,”, you greeted your friend as soon as you had found your phone and recognised the person calling you. “what’s up?”, you asked innocently, not knowing what was to come.
“Y/N?”, you heard your friend ask. It sounded like a sniff that followed, but you knew that wasn’t possible. Steven wasn’t one to cry. Unless-
“Y/N?”, he asked again, because you hadn’t answered. “Yes?”, you asked. “Y/N, something terrible happened....I-..”, he sniffed again. Your heart began racing and your breathing increased.
“Steven?”, you asked frantically. “Steven, what is it? Tell me, Steven. Is it somehting with Luke?”, you asked. “No, no.”, he breathed out, but although hearing that nothing happened to the love of your life, you were still frightened.
“It’s- It’s Nell.”, he brought out. Your heart stopped for a single second, before Steven continued speaking. “She’s dead.”, he said.
Silence. No thoughts, no feelings. For a second, void filled you. Then it came all flooding back. Your heart dropped into your stomach and did weird turns of aching. Tears stinged your eyes, but you wouldn’t just yet let them fall. It wasn’t true. It couldn’t be. Your best friend wasn’t dead.
“Nell’s dead.”, he stated again before you heard him let out a sob. Your knees suddenly became all wobbly just before they gave away and you sat on the floor. You didn’t even notice, but a scream must have come out of your throat.
Your hand flew to your mouth to prevent any further screams from escaping your mouth. Tears ran down your cheeks as you started crying uncontrollably.
That’s how you reacted to your best friend’s death. You couldn’t imagine what it must feel like to be told your twin sister was dead. So that is why, besides the fact that you were his girlfriend, you and Steven drove to Luke’s rehab center together.
As you found out Luke wasn’t there, your anxiety increased even more, if that was even possible. You were worried something had happened to him as well.
So now you were on the way to get Luke at the adress he had given you. The rehab lady, whose name was Paige, you somehow now remembered, slowed the car at the sidewalk. Before the car stopped rolling, you had already thrown the car door open to get to Luke. You left the door open as you stepped towards the boy you fell in love with.
He was neither wearing shoes nor anything warmer than a shirt, although he was famous for his oversized sweatshirts. He rubbed his left arm out of coldness and saw as your jaw dropped as you scanned his face. He was beaten up.
His handsome face was covered in bruises and he looked lost. You couldn’t stop the tears from falling down your face. You lunged towards him to bury your face in his chest so that he couldn’t hear you sobbing. He already had had his arms opened for you to fall into.
He kissed the top of your head and brushed his hand over your hair. “I’m okay, darling. I’m okay.”, he whispered into your hair. But besides the fact that you knew he had yet to find out his sister was dead, you felt him shiver.
You pulled away from him as you heard Steven step towards the both of you. “Luke,”, he began and you clapsed one of Luke’s hands into yours. “Something happened,”, he continued.
“Wha- What is it?”, Luke asked anxiously and your heart broke solely from the breaking of his voice. Silence fell between the three of you as Steven breathed in.
“Nell-”, he shook his head. “Nellie’s dead, Luke.”, he told him. You clenched your hand around his and closed your eyes.
The boy you loved was already beaten up and broken, he didn’t deserve to hear that his twin sister died. Nobody deserved that, but surely not the boy standing next to you, who would never hurt another human being.
“Wha- How?”, he asked, now gripping your hand as well. “Suicide.”, Steven sniffed. “No, it wasn’t.”, Luke stated without  doubt in his mind.
You pulled at your hand and pulled your boyfriend into your arms. Only when he felt your arms around him, heard your soothing voice, was when he started crying. He sobbed into your shoulder and cried on the whole way to the airport and you cried with him.
And you wished, more than anything, to be able to take his pain away and have your best friend back.
take a look at my other luke crain imagine x

👏 FLUFFY 👏 FALL 👏 TRADITIONS 👏 WITH 👏 THE 👏 CRAINS 👏 😍
We’re Lions Now
Tumblr media
703 Words - More Freaky Fics
Notes: This ended up being just a nice fall inspired thing which doesn’t really include any traditions but it’s cute. No references to anything sad at all, and with Hill House you have no idea how hard that was for me. There are x reader implications for all of them except Shirley because I dont vibe. And yes, it includes Nell. ❤️
- - -
The hazy late October air had already covered your new home in leaves. The particularly large oak in your backyard was the primary culprit, and it made for a nice spot to relax.
You leaned back against Nell and Theo, unable to stop laughing as Steve and Luke chased your dog, Jackson, around the yard. The tree behind you whistled in the wind and pulled the little pup’s attention for a second before the race began again. You had missed them dearly. You hadn’t seen the Crains in years and your housewarming was the perfect excuse to bring them all together. Now with everyone spread around the yard, except Shirley and Kevin who insisted on making dinner, it was like you’d never been apart.
All around you, the leaves fell in a dazzling array of colors and you reached out to flick one out off Nell’s hair. As you did so a slight flush settled in over her face and a soft smile on her lips. She looked so content and happy that you couldn’t help offering a soft smile back. Your heart skipped a beat as Nell rested her hand over yours. You quickly glanced away, trying to refocus on what Theo had been saying.
“...I dunno I think it’s just so much more realistic.” Theo’s passionate tones pulled you back into the conversation and you couldn’t help smiling as she continued. Her energy was infectious, intelligent, and damn near irresistible.
“All I’m saying is- why go out and spend all that money on plastic decor when you can get the real thing for free?”
She looked at you expectantly and you scrambled for an answer. You’d gotten caught up in studying the lines of her face and the melody sewn into her voice. You had no idea what she was even talking about.
Thankfully before you could stumble through a response Jackson bounded over and into Theo’s lap with the boys right on his heels. With Theo thoroughly distracted you looked up at Steve and Luke.
The setting sun cast Steve in a soft amber glow and for a second he looked relaxed and carefree for the first time in months. Your heart fluttered as he cast a lazy half-smile towards you.
“The sun’s getting low and this guy,” he said gesturing to your dog, “thought it might be time to move inside.”
You laughed as your dog barked and gave you the biggest puppy-eyes he could, his stomach growling almost on cue.
“Kinda sounds like you’re getting tired old man,” you said, holding back a laugh, “Jackson would never turn down more outside time.”
Steve scoffed and shook his head, “that’s pretty good coming from you who’s been sitting around chatting for the last hour.”
You giggled and glanced at Theo and Nell who were holding back laughter. You felt your breath hitch as Theo leaned over to whisper in your ear, “I think it’s all a clever ruse to get us to give up our spot.”
She had never seemed so young before, and you couldn’t help giggling as you shook your head. You shrugged at your would-be co-conspirator and turned your attention back to Steven.
“I guess we’ve done enough sitting around for one evening anyway,” you sarcastically, “I wouldn’t want grandpa here to break a hip”.
Steve laughed in a mock victory as Luke offered you his hand to pull you to your feet. You blushed and squeezed Luke’s hand as you stood up, thankful for his strong arms around you as you stood. You lingered in his arms for a moment too long. You felt cozy and safe and you felt your face heat up as you finally stepped apart.
“Hey folks,” Shirley yelled from the house, “dinners ready get in here!”
The crisp fall air and setting sun pushed your group towards the house. The pumpkins on the porch still smelled like cinnamon and you were impossibly warm despite the advancing cold. It was like you’d finally come home and you couldn’t have been happier.
As you all settled into your slightly cramped dining room you couldn’t help thinking about the coming holiday season, and all the wonderful friends you had to share it with.

Halloween Drabbles Day 22
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Steven Crain x reader
Prompt: “Halloween with friends? What friends?”
You sighed and let your head fall onto the soft cushion on your king bed. There were candy rappers in your hand that had been crumpled and discarded. You heard a voice speak when you looked back up.
“Whatcha doing?” Steven asked, visibly worried. You shrugged. You tried to play it off like you hadn’t just been eating your fair share of candy in bed after work. In your defense he wasn’t due back for a few hours.
“Oh nothing. What are we doing for Halloween?” you asked while you were thinking about candy. He gave you a look and you dismissed it.
“We could spend it with friends,” he said with a slight in his voice. You tried to figure out what it was before you realized. You forgot he hated Halloween.
“Halloween with friends? What friends?” you asked with a slight smile to make up for your mistake. Ever since hill house he had been distant from anything horror related that wasn’t his books. You usually didn’t even watch horror movies, no matter how much you wanted to.
“We can just spend it in again if you want,” he said. You nodded, looking at the scrunched pieces of candy in your hand.
“We could hand out candy?” you said slyly. He gave you another look and you dropped it. Instead of protesting you threw the wrappers at him.
He laughed and threw some back at you in his attempt to catch it. You giggled and hid behind the bed. He ran around it and attacked you and in minutes you were a laughing mess, intertwined on the ground.
“We can eat the candy,” he concluded. You nodded.
“Sounds like a plan
