Tales From the Internet:  The Time Internet Men Decided a Gamer Feminist Was the Worst Thing Since Milk With Pulp

Let’s step back to the year 2014, yes this was long after the events happened.  I just got home from school with a skip in my step and a smile on my face to mask the pain.  I sit down at my computer with snack in hand ready to watch my new favorite game journalist on the Escapist YouTube channel, James Stephanie Sterling.  I click on a video I haven’t seen and there I learn of an on going temper tantrum happening still to this day.  All centered around a game critic who looks at games from a feminist perspective.  Her name?  Anita Sarkeesian.

So what happened?  I’m glad you asked disembodied voice whispering into my ear.  To answer the question, she was a feminist who set up a Kickstarter for her new show at the time, this show was her critiquing games...but from a feminist perspective.  That’s it, I never checked out her internet show, because it didn’t interest me at the time, and honestly I’m scared of what the algorithm will spit out when I type her name in.  I was getting more into retro reviews and Game Theory at the time, I hadn’t even thought about exploring social issues at this point.  

If it ended with Anita launching the Kickstarter and going about with her life without any worry, we wouldn’t be hear.  What happened next was that the anti SJW crowd had the biggest meltdown in internet history.  There were a handful of channels that had too many videos on Anita Sarkeesian and telling the world how bad and mean she is, these were usually dozens of videos sometimes lasting hours in a bit of a podcast/reaction format.  Anita was essentially content farmed for hundreds of hours of content in just a few channels, all of which just hit the same beats and would boil down to just saying that feminism is icky, even in videos that had nothing to do with her.  The people who made them?  They were the same crowd who thought the N word wasn’t a slur and would drop it like they were the most enthusiastic flower girl at the worst wedding, and then they tried to use autism as a slur.  These were the same people who would claim they weren’t sexist by naming their favorite stripper, who they probably didn’t even tip, and then say that women were literal monsters.  Truly we are dealing with great minds, behold the next Socrates as he owns the libs through research papers he hasn’t even read.

With all that going on, Anita received so many death threats, rape threats, and doxing.  This was obviously unwarranted, my fedora wearing dumb edgy teenager self looked at all this and thought, “wow this is actually disgusting” and that was back when I was hanging around the edge of that rabbit hole (again, dumb teenager).  The strange thing is that among all this, I actually forgot what Anita originally did.  I completely forgot what she did or who she was because the meltdown overshadowed her so much.  All I knew from this era, was that she was gamer feminist.  I had to hunt down that original Jimquisition video to remember who she was.  

Honestly I think James Stephanie Sterling put it right when they said that Anita Sarkeesian was these people’s Frankenstein’s monster.  She was content doing her own thing in her corner of the internet among the vast cosmos that is the internet.  It was only because of the meltdown that everyone heard of Anita.  These days Anita has her head held high and looking forward, meanwhile the people who dragged her out of her corner of space are still looking back at her crime of being a feminist on the internet, yes they’re still bashing her.  I wish you well Anita, you honestly deserve it, especially after what you’ve gone through.

Elisabeth das Musical: The Japanese Productions, Takarazuka and Toho

Plot Summary: The musical opens with Luigi Lucheni, our narrator, being judged in the underworld for killing Elisabeth, the empress of Austria. He says that Death wanted him to do it, and that she wanted to die because she was in love with Death. The musical goes back in time and Lucheni narrates Elisabeth's life and we see her from age 16 to 60. Her obsession with death grows as her mental health declines, as Death falls in love with her and tries to convince her to kill herself so they can be together. The musical deals with mental health issues and also has multiple main LGBT+ characters.

For anyone not familiar with the musical, above is the summary of the plot. The summary of the life of the musical is it premiered in 1992 in Austria in the German language. There have been two Austrian revivals since in 2003 and 2012, and constant new productions in Germany, Hungary, Japan, Sweden, the Netherlands, Czechia, Switzerland and South Korea.

I would highly recommend watching the original 1992 Vienna production and the 2006 Vienna revival, both are on Youtube with English subtitles.

In Japan there are two different theatre troupes who have been performing productions of Elisabeth for over 20 years. Takarazuka is a theatre troupe of only female performers who play both the female and male roles. They don’t change the male characters into women, they essentially crossdress and perform as men, just as the female character of Edna Turnblad in the musical Hairspray is always played by a man. They had their first production of Elisabeth in 1996 and a few new songs were added for that production. There are the main casts but also every production has one night where junior stars of the troupe perform in the lead roles. These are called shinjin kouen or ‘Shinko’ casts. Toho is a mixed-gender theatre troupe who first performed the musical in 2000. It’s common in Japan for musicals to have pro-shots and DVDs so all the links to videos below are the official videos, not bootlegs. There are no official English subtitles provided for Takarazuka or Toho’s DVD releases, but some fans make their own subtitles that you can download and to play you’ll need video playing program like VLC in that can separately load up videos and subtitle files to play at the same time. You can also look on CastAlbums which is a great website that documents all musical albums and videos you can see lists of every CD and DVD release for Elisabeth here.

You can purchase the DVDs and CDs new from https://www.soundofmusic-shop.de/ and you can find them new and second-hand on Ebay and Yahoo Auctions Japan (there’s a lot of other Takarazuka and Toho merch on Yahoo Auctions, but you will need to use a proxy shipping server. Cryptic Mystic: In the End

To bounce off of the previous blog posting, I thought it would be fun to just hop right on into the topic of what happens after we die. After all, we just finished talking about souls and a bit of astral projection last time. From transcending to another place/dimension to reincarnation, there truly is a lot to cover when you start diving into the many beliefs and ideas that surround death and mortality/immortality. But what differentiates the scientific facts from myths and stories of olden days? For those who believe in one defined means to an end for us all, how do you know for a fact that what you believe is true? Have you ever questioned what is life after death? Hell, is there a life after death? Or maybe… it’s something else… something so obscure that our tiny human brains are nowhere near possessing the capabilities to understand it. In the end, readers can decide for themselves what is more likely to be true, or maybe… the answer to this cryptic question has been right in front of us all along? Maybe it is a combination of what we know but do not yet understand. Let’s talk shop, shall we?

The numerous speculations on what happens after we die is overwhelming. There are far too many ideas and beliefs that people hold in this regard. I’ll briefly cover a few of the more popular beliefs as to not make this blog super lengthy - because, ya know, your attention span and whatnot. 

Scientifically, there are two types of death: clinical death and brain death. Clinical death is characterized by major organ failure (e.g. heart, liver, kidneys, etc.) until the body is completely rendered of functioning and the individual is officially pronounced dead. In brain death, solely the brain stops functioning, but the other organs within the body continue to work within their normal capacities. Creepy fun fact for you: the heart can beat for up to 30 minutes on its own after all brain cells have died. Once the heart stops it’s adios amigo. The remaining major organs that were barely hanging on have now lost blood flow, and life has ended. More creepy death fun facts: the gastrointestinal tract can live on its own for up to 3 days, and the complete decomposition of a body takes roughly 30 years! Crazy science stuff. 

Now let’s take a look at some common beliefs and speculations of what happens when/after we die. Again, I want to remind you, readers, that in my eyes there is no right or wrong answer here. I am a firm believer in everyone having their own beliefs and respect all of them regardless of how obscure some naysayers may think that they are. I enjoy hearing stories from followers that help to further broaden my thought processes. The belief that we transcend to another realm/dimension has been around for thousands of years and has been studied for decades. There is a lot to uncover here between recent scientific discoveries and human belief. Many people believe that many other dimensions exist, however, scientific exploration hasn’t fully found the golden answer to if and what these other dimensions may contain if they do indeed exist. We know that Earth has at least three dimensions: space—length, width, and depth—and one dimension of time. Modern physics posits that there is at least a fourth dimension of space, but that we can’t experience it. Maybe we can? Maybe we do but just haven’t put a label on it? Maybe the odd phenomena that happen across the world that people describe as being ghosts, aliens, and other paranormal activities are actually from the next dimension or another. There has been speculation that extraterrestrials come from another dimension through a portal that is already here on Earth rather than from the sky (outer space). 

Give me an R! Give me an E! Hell, this word is too long and I’m not going to put you through reading a silly cheer for 5 minutes. Reincarnation - yet another commonly held belief of what happens when we die. For those of you who may have never heard of reincarnation, here is the quick and dirty version of the definition. Reincarnation posits that when we die our spirit/soul/whatever you want to call it, moves on to a new host. This host could be a human baby that is born the very second that you die OR you could possibly find yourself reincarnated as an animal, tree, flower, or any other living thing that you can find on Earth. Interesting concept indeed.

My favorite belief, that we go to Heaven or somewhere similar, is one that is believed by millions of people across the world. Wouldn’t it be nice to die and go to another world/place where nothing can do you harm, and just live out the rest of your existence in peace? Well, if you can believe it then it may just happen that way - or maybe not. I am fairly certain I have mentioned this in previous blogs, but religion can be thought of as a coping mechanism for that which we do not know or understand; the human way of putting a label on something to make ourselves feel better or like we are a part of something divine and much greater than us. Which, in all actuality, we very well may be a part of something divine and much greater than us, however, it is my personal opinion that we honestly have no fucking clue about the extent to which that is. 

Now, this next one I threw in here because I personally found it to be interesting. In 2017 I was having a conversation with a friend about mystical things such as portals, extraterrestrials, etc. My friend informed me of a research video on YouTube about a company called CERN. He described this Swiss company as having built a circular-shaped machine that when you throw something into its core it disappears. However, other items have come through this machine and into the room from… wherever the other side is? Basically, these people have created a portal and no one knows about it. You’re welcome for the information. Within this research video, the guy who was describing all of this stuff went on to talk about how China had gifted the statue that sits in front of the CERN building. This particular statue is reported to represent the end of time and hell on Earth. There is a whole mythical background story about this statue - you need to check it out. The irony between the statue and this machine they made is uncanny. It made my jaw drop. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. I haven’t been able to find the YouTube video again, so I am not sure if it got taken down because the guy exposed something that was supposed to be secret, or maybe I just suck at YouTube searches. Either way, I encourage you to do some digging on this one, because this type of information could potentially support the whole soul/spirit transcending into another realm/dimension belief. I am not a physicist, so I could be explaining this all wrong. You’ll just have to check out their website for yourself and see what it’s all about. → home.cern

There is also the belief that when we die nothing happens. We are dead and it is the end of who we once were. This belief is often held by Atheists and some Satanists if we’re using labels. However, many people believe this who aren’t subscribed to a religion or don’t want to necessarily put a label on who they are/what they believe. This is the grim reality of our existence. Maybe it all means… nothing… Now isn’t that depressing. 

Then there are near-death experiences, which brings a whole different perspective into the mix. People all over the world have encountered near-death experiences. Many report shockingly similar experiences and stories. Some say they see a white light and follow it to a place of peace. I have heard people say that while they were legally deceased they found themself in a field of flowers or floating within the cosmos. A common theme found within these individuals is that once they have had their near-death experience, they aren’t afraid of death anymore - they welcome it with open arms. One woman on a documentary that I watched even went as far as to say that she didn’t want to come back from where she was and was disappointed when she was revived. These experiences could possibly support the theory of transcending to other dimensions or that there is a “heaven.” I can’t explain it, but I still find the information interesting to ponder upon. 

Our mortality is evident, but what really happens when we die? These are just a short collection of ideas and beliefs that have been around for ages, however, there are many more to consider I’m sure. What do you think? Or should I say: what do you want to believe? Ultimately it’s your choice. Whatever brings you peace, serves you well, and is the right answer for you is what I advise you to turn to. This flesh and blood will decay for each of us one day - it’s inevitable. It is for this very reason why I say live life to the fullest. Regret nothing. Do what best serves you. Do what makes you happy. Take chances. Above all else - be the best version of yourself that makes you happy.

PreCure stock footage

More pointless ponderings.

This is a comparison count of all the recurring attack animation sequences (meaning excluding one-time attacks) we’ve seen so far in Precure’s tv series. Done mainly because I wanted the numbers all on one page. :P

Of course, as I haven’t watched all the seasons (Futari to Splash Star) and my memory is crap, this should not be considered accurate. So any help correcting would be appreciated.

Originally, this was supposed to focus only on sub-attacks but that term’s definition seems to vary widely from season to season. So let’s not confuse ourselves with what counts as a “finisher” and what doesn’t and just stick with the general words “stock footage”.

Futari wa [3?] - Marble Screw, Rainbow Therapy, Rainbow Storm

I’m reading here on the wiki that Rainbow Therapy is “hardly used”...I don’t really know what that means, hence the question mark if it counts as a recurring attack or not.

I also don’t want to include upgraded attacks as separate entries if there are hardly any significant differences between the original and the upgraded one (like StarPre’s) but when I compare it to Marble Screw...it seems okay in my book? Since I haven’t watched this season, I’m not confident enough to make the final call so I will leave it at 3 for now.

Futari wa Max Heart [2?] - Heartiel Action, Extreme Luminario

Alright, Marble Screw Max is pretty much the same as the original with a little extra tacked onto the end. So technically, if there’s nothing else I’m missing, the count for this season should be 2. But still gonna leave room for debate.

Splash Star [3?] - Twin Stream Splash, Spiral Heart Splash (2)

The two versions of Spiral Heart Splash are distinct enough from each other to count as separate.

Spiral Heart Splash Star is a one-time, final boss group attack so not gonna include it.

And after debating about the Fortissimo ones, I decided that I’ll keep Shining as its own entry for now. Not quite happy about it (Shining is just old attacks laid out on top of one another with some minor new animation in between) but it doesn’t seem entirely right to call it just an upgrade either......I dunno.

Trinity Lumiere and Trinity Explosion would’ve been under just one entry, too, but the CGI animation leading up to the attack are different.

I suspect there might be another upgraded version of that super group attack as well so perhaps a total of 6 formal attack sequences for HealPre altogether.

Unless they plan to give the Cures individual attacks with that...needle arrow weapon whatever it is but I somewhat doubt it.....we’ll see.

monday thing: june twenty-ninth (morning again)

it rained all weekend. this morning the sun finally broke through the clouds, which promptly made everything worse. now it is bright and hot out, while meanwhile the amount of water in the air barely seems to have diminished. if anything it may have increased. it is insultingly humid outside. it is that kind of humid that feels like you could just reach out and wring water out of the air like a washcloth. I stepped onto the porch for a moment this morning to check on the plants. they were fine, but in the thirty seconds or so that I was outside my head started swimming and every inch of my skin immediately felt sticky. I think you could use our yard as a sauna without any additional modifications needed.

I intend to spend the rest of the day inside. those thirty seconds were quite enough.

there are marigolds blooming. only three or four, and small yet, but there are more on the way. seeing one was something to feel good about in a few weeks of not feeling good about much of anything at all. the miniature rose seems to be enjoying the kitchen window and a bit of periodic misting because it has so far produced three beautiful little marbled red-and-white flowers. the cosmos have not put anything out yet, but most of them have shot up tall and leafy. the little seedlings that grew up from the pots that last year's celosia were in--which I have been growing with hope but not surety that they would indeed turn out to be celosia--now have little feathery orange and red buds that do look a great deal like celosia. this is entirely logical really, and yet at the same time it feels like something amazing.

lately it has been especially difficult to get out of bed in the mornings. often it feels like there is not much worth getting up for. the world feels too much, too big, too close, too terrible. often during the day there are times when the anxiety is so bad that it feels as though everything could break apart at any moment, like I am constantly watching numbers on a timer ticking down to some unknown and dreadful cataclysm. it is impossible to pinpoint the place where a reasonable reaction to everything going on in the world ends and some out of control chemical process in my brain begins, but I try to find the line anyway. at what point do the things I might usually do to distract and soothe and comfort myself become irresponsible and avoidant of things that should not be avoided? how long can I justify watching something pointless and funny before I check the news again? how can I talk myself down from the world is ending right now this moment without overshooting into everything is fine and nothing is wrong when that is clearly not the case?

in the end it is all inescapable anyway. there it is, in the morning, before I have checked the news, before I have even opened my eyes.

when I was a child, in the grips of anxiety I did not have words or explanation for, I thought often about the world ending. I fretted about science-textbook stories of stars going out and planets crumbling from entropy, worried about tornadoes, house fires, car accidents. how could we know that one day, without warning, a comet might not crash out of the void of space and put an end to us all? I spent long periods trapped under the weight of a fear so enormous that it felt as if everything might come undone in an instant.

sometimes these days I feel as though I am back there again, ten years old and laying awake at night waiting for the world to end.

better then to lie there in the quiet under the close weight of the blanket, and not bother with anything.

but--

my cat is very soft, and silly, and purrs very loudly, and when she sees I am awake she walks across the bed to say hello, and even if the world is ending she needs to be fed in the morning and to do that I need to get up.

there are flowers that would never have bloomed if I did not get out of bed to water them.

right now it feels as though there is nothing meaningful I can do to make the world any better. I don't know if I ever will be able to. but I know that I must first be in the world.

so: today I fed my cat, and watered my rose, and hugged my mom, and listened to a podcast that told me some history I did not know. today I drank tea out of a mug that was given to me by a friend, and listened to soft music, and watched a youtube video that made me laugh. today I got out of bed and tomorrow I will get out of bed again.

“Hey, everyone! We’re back with another interview with my friends! This time we’re hanging out at Whimsy’s sky castle, and lemme just say this place is cool as heck!” This YouTube video doesn’t have any intro at all, cold opening with the camera panning around a regal-looking white room.

Completing its 360, the camera alights upon a young woman with short teal hair, futuristic gray clothing, and a witch’s hat. A microphone levitates near her, picking up her words. “As always, I’m Erika Ljunggren, psychic YouTuber and Trouble’s apprentice. Introduce yourselves, you two!”

With a gesture from Erika L’s skinny metal wand, the camera pans over and back to reveal two other women sitting on the couch behind her. The microphone darts over to them as well. A tall brunette with a spiky crown and a shorter woman with a big hat, a scarf, and an apron, both wearing glasses. 

The former gets up from her seat, poses, teleports a few feet in the air and then lands in another pose, loudly announcing in her monotone "I'm the magical girl of the cosmos, Kimoto Erika, apprentice of Whimsy."

The latter, on the other hand, remains in her seat and watches. After giggling quietly at Erika K's antics, she looks back to the camera. "H-Hello... My name is... R-Rada Orlov... I'm... Beacon's apprentice..." She gives a little wave.

Erika L welcomes them both with a grin.

Then, turning to Erika K, the YouTuber asks, “What’s it like apprenticing under Whimsy?”

"It’s lots of fun, and I’m learning lots. I like it here,” she responds “I’m very grateful to Miss Trick, Mr Treat, and Miss Trouble for everything they’ve done for me to be here. And I’m extremely grateful to Boss for giving me this opportunity. The castle is really cool." 

She pauses for a moment, leaning her head back slightly before tipping it forwards once more. "Boss is a really skilled witch, so I've been able to cover a lot of ground under them. I think that I made the best choice for me." The corners of her lips quirk upwards into a slight smile.

Erika L then turns to Rada, the microphone moving gently over with her gaze. “What’s it like apprenticing under Beacon?”

"It's been... r-really nice... Granny Beacon is... a-amazing..." Rada fidgets with end of her scarf, drawing the long material up into her lap. "I, um... u-used to be... m-more nervous... than I am now and... s-scared of a lot... of different things... b-but... sh-she's been... very patient with me... a-and she's taught me... a lot... b-both as an apprentice... a-and as a person..."

“What have the two of you been up to lately, magic-wise? Any fun projects in the works?” asks Erika L.

Erika K hums, holding her hands up, index fingers and thumbs pointing outwards towards the ceiling far corners. "I’ve been experimenting with combo-ing my elements. Trying to get them working together can be a bit tricky, depending on which ones I'm trying with. I’ll get there eventually though." 

Flicking her wrists, her hands now spread fully chop down diagonally. "Also, with Mr Elliot’s help, I’ve forged a holy blade that shimmers with stardust." She leans forwards and holds a hand up beside her mouth dropping her voice just slightly. "When the goddesses approve of a strike it deals extra secret damage."

"I've also been... practicing with... combining elements..." Rada adds, nodding along with what Erika K says. "It can... b-be difficult... but also fun... seeing what kind... of different effects... are possible... i-if you just... put your mind to it..."

"A-As for, um, projects... I don't think... a-anything I'm doing is... a-as exciting as Miss Kimoto, but..." Rada bites her bottom lip for a moment in hesitation before continuing. "I've, um... I've been working on... a spell that... m-makes it easier for... spirits to communicate with... a-and interact with... th-their loved ones...  s-so that a ghost... a-and their family or friends... h-have a chance... to grieve together... Th-Then they can... pass on peacefully... a-and the people still living... h-have closure..."

“I mean, that’s pretty cool too! Just, y’know, in a different way!” Erika L nods approvingly. “Speaking of elements and combos thereof, what are your favorites that you've learned so far?”

Erika K steeples her fingers and places her elbows on her knees, resting her chin on her hands as she leans forwards. "Mh.... I think I still like Celestial best. I think it’s always going to be my favourite, there's so much you can do with it. But teleporting has been really handy too. Trying to combine both with Space for Special Warping is a bit trickier, but I’m failing good so I can figure it out. I like all the magic I've learnt though, Earth makes me feel like a strong bender from the western eastern based anime. I'm hoping to try and see if sand and metal still fall under its belt or if I'll need to expand my roster first." 

The mic darts back to Rada. "I, um... r-really like working with Emotion magic... a-and I'm having a lot of fun with Music magic as well... Combining the two together... c-can be powerful... e-emotionally, that is, um... s-since music can... affect people... so much... A-Although Music and... L-Life magic is... a-also fun... l-like in, um... th-the cartoon with... th-the magic mouse... a-and the mops..." She tugs up the edge of her scarf, looking embarrassed. Way to out yourself for recreating The Sorcerer's Apprentice, Rada.

Erika K murmurs a little "I know that western anime," nodding along with Rada's words. She leans back into her seat, her lips quirking into a smile. "Death magic is still just a bud, but thanks to Rada I'd already started thinking of the sort of expanded uses for it. I even know some I wouldn't have thought of beforehand. I think learning a magic that one of us has already learnt is extra fun because it means we get to work together, and with peer reviews and sessions we can learn faster and better. And we get to hang out at the same time."

Although Rada’s mouth is covered, the corners of her eyes crinkle with a smile as Erika K talks about Death magic. "Y-Yes... I like... h-having magic... w-we can both do... I-It's a lot... easier to learn things... wh-when we're working together... a-and think of things... th-that I wouldn't consider... o-on my own..." Rada shifts in place before continuing. "I have a... b-better understanding of it... s-since starting to learn... Life magic... I-It's not as... s-scary or violent... It's... natural..." She adds, feeling like she needs to defend it.

Another nod from the interviewer. “Nice, nice! There’s so many elements out there, and each one is so versatile! And that’s not even everything a witch has at their disposal, either. Tell me about your wands!”

Shifting her posture into something more alert, Erika K claps once, a big smile on her face. She opens her purse and pulls her wand out. The act itself is comical, with the contrast in the size of the wand versus the purse itself. Thank you Space Magic. She balances the wand on her flat palms above her head, smiling brightly. 

"Last Laugh is super cool. I can fly on it, it has a detachable strap for easy carrying, and it makes a really good prop for physical comedy. It's got really good range as a prop, and it's nice and sturdy. Plus I can do this with it-" Hopping out of her seat she begins to twirl the gun shaped wand around, although for only a short while. Once done she drops back down resting her wand on her lap. "Also I can use it to fire off magic easier then-" She flexes, "these guns."

"It s-suits you..." Rada mumbles, the curve of her cheeks still visible above the edge of her scarf tinged with pink, which only deepens when Erika K flexes.

"M-Mine is, um... m-more specialized, I th-think... th-than Miss Kimoto's..." Rada squeaks as she pulls out her wand from a pocket beneath her apron.

In comparison to the rifle-wand, the one Rada holds up is tiny and thin, only a foot in length. The white porcelain lily-of-the-valley plant is fragile-looking, with blood red enamel filling in the gaps where the vase-like handle is cracked, and tiny red gemstones lining the rims of the bell flowers as well as the veins of its skeletal silver leaves.

"It helps me... protect myself o-or... other people... i-if things are going badly... a-and I've been hurt..." She explains, bringing it closer to her chest as she nibbles on her bottom lip. "I was nervous at first... th-that it would break but... i-it's stronger than it looks..."

“Wow, they’re both so cool, huh? Thanks again for agreeing to come out here today, you two.” Erika L brings the camera in close, beaming at the viewer. “Remember, folks, we can only do so much with magic alone. Think about what you can do to help the environment. What your government can do. We’re making progress, with everyone’s help!”

How to create a cottage garden – tips and ideas

Hi there, it’s Alexandra from the Middle-sized Garden YouTube channel and blog and I’m talking about cottage garden style, and whether there are any tricks or tips that you need to know in order to make your cottage garden  look fabulous. Cottage garden style means a colorful mix of flowers, packed in together with herbs and edibles, it’s relaxed and pretty, and I think it’s having a bit of a moment at the moment and the reason for that is that although we gardeners don’t really follow fashion as such, we can’t help being inspired by the great shows, and this year there haven’t been any great shows to be inspired by. On top of that it’s been quite difficult to get plants – we haven’t been able to get exactly the plants we want always and we’ve had to make compromises, so I’ve had friends saying

things like ‘I’d never usually buy red pelargoniums but they were the only ones I could get.’ So we’re having to put up with a bit less control and a bit more of a mix, and thirdly, we’re all much more local we’re going down the same streets, day after day, and while a nicely designed path, a nicely clipped hedge or a beautiful gate is a pleasure to see, what really gives us joy is when we suddenly see

that flower pop up, that marigold or that bee buzzing around the flower or bulb we haven’t seen before and that’s really given everyone so much joy, so I think we’re all thinking ‘just let’s get more flowers into our lives.’ So what are the rules of cottage garden style?

Well, the great thing is that aren’t any.

However, up to a point, I think it’s quite a good idea if you make your own rules. For example Julie Quinn writes the London Cottage Garden blog and she champions the cottage garden style in small urban spaces. For her, cottage gardening is about making it easy. She grows plants which are easy and robust and common.

She says that she doesn’t want to have to do any growing from seed, any pricking out, any planting out and no staking no propagating, she doesn’t do pest control, she doesn’t have topiary and doesn’t have a lawn, she just have lots of easy, common, robust greenery packed in tightly.

The other thing she does is that she excludes certain colors, for example, no black flowers or black foliage, and she also finds white very difficult place as well. And at the opposite end of the spectrum is Sue Oriel who with her partner Stephanie runs Country Lane Flowers and she grows her flowers for sale in her garden, but there’s a part of her garden that she’s just hedged off just for her, and that’s the cottage garden, and it’s a riot of color and it’s got loads of plants like roses and cat mint and delphiniums and phlox and fruit  trees it’s absolutely beautiful. Sue says you can put anything you like in a cottage garden and then she adds ‘but I never put yellow or orange in there’. And of course having a few of those I don’t grow rules makes it an awful lot easier  to know what you do grow I think it can help when you’re establishing your own  cottage garden style to know where cottage garden style came from and  the theory is that he had originated with farmworkers who grew food to eat  and herbs around in their little plots it’s likely that really however that  cottage garden style actually

started when people had a bit more time a bit  more space and a bit more money to grow flowers and to grow flowers for  something they really wanted to enjoy there’s a theory that plants would have  been divided from the big house gardens and then they would have been passed on  to locals and that people would have got perhaps the extra seedlings and  I think that probably is very true and it really contributes to this idea that  you need to get plants that are easy to divide easy to propagate easy to seed  and that grow well in your area in the Victorian times the grand gardens were  very very formal they had very strict color schemes in the bedding they had  topiary they had huge vistas they had exotic plants brought in from all over  the world and William Robinson and subsequently Gertrude Jekyll very much  kicked against this style and started to introduce the idea of naturalness  and wildness and growing plants that actually stayed in the ground all  year round because instead of quaking the bedding out and then putting in  new bedding you actually grew plants

in your garden and of course this is a much  easier garden style for people to copy because the very formal bedding schemes  really don’t work in smaller spaces William Robinson’s own garden which  was very influential in this movement is still available to see today it’s  grave time manor hotel and it’s been beautifully updated by Head Gardener  Tom coward and there’s a video about that in the description below along

with  links to the designers and companies and bloggers that I’m mentioning in  this video so what are the key elements you must have in the cottage garden well  number one is a fruit tree if you go back to the cottage garden roots  cottages would have grown fruit tree for their fruit but equally it gives  you blossom to enjoy in the springtime it starts their pollinators off early  and what’s more important is that you always need some vertical presence in  a small space and cottage garden style is small space gardening fruit trees  also give you some more vertical space to grow up and indeed fences and hedges  will do that as well sue Oriole has two climbers both roses going up through her  fruit trees and Julie Quinn says that she once again chooses the easiest  climbers which for her is sunny suckle there’s a video on climbing plants which  you can see in the description below showing you what you need to take into  account if you’re going to great rhyming plants in your garden and another very  big cottage garden style element is no lawn if you’ve got a large ish cottage  garden but they are mostly small spaces you probably would have a bit of lawn  but otherwise you would have paths and a terrace and somewhere to sit  and maybe a practical working area but on the whole a cottage garden is about  growing as many plants as possible so what are the best cottage garden plants  you’ll often see lists top 10 cottage garden plants but as I said if it’s  local to you if it’s easy to grow if you love it it’s a cottage garden plant  but there are some classics and these include foxgloves hollyhocks cap mint  delphiniums phlox lupins cosmos sue is also on a self-declared mission to get  garden Pink’s back into the garden because she says they’re so easy  to care for and they have such glorious colors anything that sells seeds easily  is definitely a cottage garden plant so that could be a richer on Nigella  fennel poppies forget-me-nots Nicholas coronary or rose Campion and of course  all the semi wild flowers might be a weed such as wild carrots and poppies  are definitely cottage garden flowers here at Hampton Court Palace Garden  festival garden designer Pollyanna Wilkinson has designed something  called the matrix aft garden and all the garden plants in it are edible or can be  used for a purpose and there’s lots of wild carrot in here but they can be used  for a purpose like dying or medicines or something like that and that’s what  makes this garden very cottage garden and also at Hampton Court is another  garden called the therapeutic garden by garden designer Tony Wagstaff and  that’s very cottage garden because it’s actually filled with medicinal plants  such as geraniums and eucalyptus and plants that we’ve actually forgotten  about as having a use or a reason so you’d also in a cottage garden need a  wide range of flowers all year you would start with the primulas and the bulbs  in spring then there’s the midsummer madness which is always gorgeous and  after that you might have salvaged dahlias perennials like persik area  really anything that you love and grows well in your garden and of course there  are all the herbs they are a key part of a cottage garden fennel and jelica saved  chives rosemary lavender and any herbs that are local to you you can also treat  cottage garden style gardening as a way of learning about gardening friends will  give you a plant and you’ll put it in and maybe it’ll survive maybe it won’t  but don’t feel too bad about it because not all plants enjoy being in a cottage  garden they have to be pretty was robust and resilient and Saguaro has discovered  that she can often find plants that grow well in the cottage garden that  she then does go on to grow for country lane flowers for selling for example  she discovered that if she grows corn flowers from seed and transplants the  seedlings from the greenhouse into the borders they do go very floppy  but if she direct sews them into the borders the corn flowers grow up much  straighter so she’s taking that lesson into the country named flowers beds and  growing corn flowers for picking so what about furniture and garden ornaments  for cottage garden style well obviously recycled and upcycle is a big thing and  the nature craft garden at Hampton Court it’s very much an example of this and  also here’s another show garden at BBC gardeners world live designed by Peter  Cowell and that uses entirely upcycle materials for its hard landscaping  while having a very much cottage garden palette so it’s a kind of contemporary  version of the cottage garden using things like scaffolding boards and  pallet wood and recycled bricks and also the fire which is a recycled and carved  up gas canister the other cottage garden trend for furniture and ornaments is to  be handmade here at the Abbey physik garden in Faversham they have lenss  shed movement and they make quite a lot of things for the garden so you’ll get  homemade benches like this and also it can be a question of just adding  a link of paint to something you’ve got already or something that you’ve bought  quite cheaply in the chain store here at Hampton Court Palace they’ve painted  old children’s bicycles to go with the flowers and while I wouldn’t quite go  that far I do think you can use colour in a cottage garden to achieve a great  deal for example Julie Quinn uses a terracotta bright terracotta parasol  and Mediterranean blue pots and it gives so much color to the garden  to be In a peculiar but definitive statement, Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan announced that they’re “lovingly” ending their marriage of nearly nine years. Although Channing, 37, had likely moved out of their home by then, on Jan. 31, Jenna, also 37, was happy to reminisce about the first time the met, which was at the audition for 2006’s Step Up, the dance franchise that helped launch their careers and relationship. “It’s really cute — and also embarrassing and crazy,” she said of the audition video from their very early days of fame. “Please watch how many times I giggle and laugh.” She added, “It’s very sentimental and amazing for me to watch.”

Yes, their first ever interaction — in 2005 — is documented forever. They were awkward, but cute, and dancing around the room to show off their chemistry — and footwork — to producers. At one point, Jenna, who has said she sounded like Minnie Mouse in that tape, joked that their pose made them look like they were going to the prom. But that was the right vibe to play bad boy Tyler who wins the heart of ballerina Nora in Baltimore-based dance flick.

While Step Up producer Adam Shankman later said, “I knew that they were going to be together forever. There was never a question,” Jenna, who grew up a dance kid in real life, has said that she wasn’t at her best the day of the audition.

“I went in to read for the part with Channing, but showed up late with the wrong scenes,” she recalled told Cosmopolitan. “Then I opened the door on the poor girl who was auditioning before me right as they were leaning in for a kiss. I was horrified. But he was so sweet. He came out and worked the scenes with me.” She said that right away she thought he was “super hot.”

They had their first kiss in the film. “It’s interesting now, because we can watch it and see; we can go, ‘Oh, wow, that was actually our first real kiss,’” she told Redbook in 2014.

But, as relationships are, it was complicated at first. He told Elle in 2013 that he had just “gotten out of a pretty long relationship, so I was in no way ready for another.” That didn’t stop him from flirting with his co-star while they made the movie. “We went out one night and danced at a club, and there was that feeling,” she told Cosmo. “Then we started hanging out.”

Their hangouts were initially PG — no kissing — watching movies and stuff. She described it as “two nights of being weird,” and she had enough of it. So she gave him an ultimatum, which was basically to, um, step up.

“I said, ‘You know what? You are probably not ready to jump into another [relationship],” she recalled to Cosmo. “‘Why don’t you take time and figure out what you want?’ I told him, ‘I always know what I want. I’m more of a monogamous relationship person. So that’s where I would go with this, but I totally understand.’ I was smart enough not to get my feelings wrapped up in it. I figured we might just be into each other because we’re shooting a movie. I said, ‘While you’re figuring that out, I’m not just going to hang out and watch movies and flirt. I’ll see you on set.”

Three days later, after a boozy night out with some of the the film’s dancers, Channing came knocking on the door of Jenna’s hotel room. “He said he had the chance to be free and he couldn’t stop thinking about me,” she said on the Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2017. “He’s in a sombrero, underwear and Ugg boots and said, ‘Let’s do this.’”

A sombrero? Yep, he explained its origins to Elle, saying that the night he showed up at her hotel room, he was drinking at a Mexican restaurant. “One one of my buddies was like, ‘What are you doing, man? She’s dope.’ So “stole” the hat “off the wall” and he went to go see about a girl.

As with many set romances, it wasn’t a secret to the crew. “The next morning he was in my room and I go to set because I had an earlier call time,” she said on Ellen. “I’m getting hair and makeup done and an hour goes by and the production assistants go, ‘We can’t find Channing. We don’t know where he is. He’s not in his room. We’ve banged on his door and called his room.’ And I called a PA over and said, ‘He’s in my room.’” When Channing arrived to set, he was greeted by applause.

Channing has said that he opened up to Jenna about his stripper past during one of their “very first dinners we ever had together. “I don’t know. I’m not shy about it. She was just like, ‘What?’ She needed to know just like everybody,” he told Entertainment Tonight last year. How did she react? “Weirdly enough, girls ask less questions then guys do. Guys want to know everything about it like, what how much? When? Were you naked?”

After Step Up wrapped, “We went back to L.A. and were together, and together ever since — never broken up,” Jenna told Redbook. And while Channing went on to make bank in Magic Mike and 21 Jump Street, he told Elle, “I was broke and I couldn’t pay my half of the rent when we were first together. She was basically my sugar mama for six months.

By the time the press tour began in 2006, Channing and his sugar mama Jenna were a full-on couple. In this interview, she gushes about their “instant bond.”

At the premiere, which took place in August 2016, they were inseparable. Director Anne Fletcher said they were “very professional” about it though. “They were there to get a job done. I never said anything to them, they just chose on their own to get the movie done first. They took it very seriously.” However, “Once the movie was over,” it was, “Go for it!”

By December 2006, they were full-blown in love and didn’t care who knew it. Channing long ago posted this video of them at a press conference in Italy to promote the flick. In it, she describes him as “a very sweet, loving, funny, giving, caring, compassionate … hard worker. He’s very goal-oriented.” As if she’s a walking, talking version of his résumé.

Yes, she was in love, but  was he. “Jenna’s very, she’s obviously beautiful, but she really, really is as beautiful inside as she is out,” he said. “She’s really real, too. She loves to teach people how to not come from a place of insecurity, just, you know, come from a place of love, I guess. She’s a big fairy, flower child. [She’s] a beautiful soul, a beautiful soul.”

Jenna and Channing got engaged in 2008 and married in 2009. Their only daughter, Everly, was born in May 2013. Jenna had said she looked forward to showing Everly the audition tape from Step Up so that she could see her parents falling in love. However, Channing talked about showing Evie some of the actual movie and she wasn’t a huge fan.

Needless to stay, Step Up was a hit. Their film kicked off what was to become a mega-million-dollar franchise, which also included more films and games. Earlier this year, the new YouTube Red show Step Up: High Water debuted — and the now seasoned pros in Hollywood are executive producers on the series.

What happens with their company, 33andOut Productions, is probably being sorted out right now amid their split news. (It has four films in development, including a film about Peter Pan and Captain Hook called Neverland.) There is a lot at stake, mostly from Channing’s side, but she’s doing well herself with her TV work. Needless to say, a lot has changed since this bright-eyed and beautiful pair first met a decade ago.

We <3 Katamari - Review

It’s been a while since I’ve posted here. I started this blog, or at least the idea of a game review blog, as a school project about two years ago. The very first game I reviewed was a wacky PS2 game called Katamari Damacy that I’d found by the happy accident of my friend owning an old disc, and I quickly grew to love it, completing the game in under a week by playing a few hours each day. That love never died, and over the last few years I’d find myself pulling up the Katamari soundtrack on YouTube or popping in the disc to roll up a few towns and relax. Enter the Nintendo Direct that happened on September 3rd of last year. We got the announcement of Luigi’s Mansion 3, Town, Animal Crossing Switch and more, but to me the biggest moment of the show was the reveal of Katamari Damacy Reroll, an announcement that literally had me standing on my chair and yelling in excitement as my friends watched me with growing concern. I got the game for Christmas this past year courtesy of my brother, and I played it non-stop for days until I once again rolled up the moon and the credits rolled. The next day, once again consumed by Katamari fever, I ordered a copy of the original game’s PS2 sequel, We <3(Love) Katamari. This is the game I’ll be reviewing today, as I completed it this morning.

Story: The King of All Cosmos may have royally screwed the planet and all it’s people a few years ago, but after they played the game Katamari Damacy, they can’t help but crave more of it’s addicting gameplay, unique style and ear-worming tunes. It’s your job, as the King’s son, Prince, to return to the surface of the earth and aid any Katamari fan with what ails them- by rolling up anything and everything in your path. Each level you select from the newly renovated hub map is a different task from a different fan, each with their own small tale to tell that ties in to what you’ll be doing in the following level. There’s also a subplot that is told through a cutscene every few levels that depicts the life of the King, through all his successes and hardships. This plot provides much more character to the quirky characters in the royal cosmic family, and also introduces you to the King’s father, who has his own small character arc as well. This story is told without any dialogue or text, and while that does miss the greatness that is Katamari’s charming writing, it makes sense in the context of a flashback over a cosmic being’s lifetime. Combined, these two tales make We <3 Katamari a much more engaging game since it provides small goals in the form of the cutscenes as well as giving the characters more depth and development. It’s wacky, fourth wall breaking, and just so Katamari. 9/10

Visuals: This is a department where We <3 Katamari isn’t too far from it’s predecessor, but the minor changes that are provided make the visual treat that the game does provide much more satisfying. The visuals are virtually identical, although this game has a much wider variety of creative items and diverse locales that make the best of the simplistic art direction and flesh out the world that you’re plodding through. This change in world design is most apparent in the game’s new types of levels, such as the firefly level (see picture below), where the entire level takes place at night, with peaceful french-inspired music playing in the background and a thick layer of gently swaying fireflies that glow softly as you roll them onto your sticky ball. Another fantastic level is the under water one, where schools of fish of all shapes and sizes zip by and you collect colorful stones and other aquatic goodies. It’s levels like these that make We <3 Katamari into a much different beast than Katamari Damacy, since it provides you with a more intimate sense of scale in the world, as well as showing you just how much beauty and creativity you weren’t shown during the relatively catastrophic events that took place after the King’s drunken rampage. Overall the visuals aren’t actually improved over the first game, but much more creative usage of Katamari’s artstyle lends itself to a more coherent and satisfying experience. 9/10

Music: Katamari music is an acquired taste. It’s all over the place -drawing inspiration from tons of genres and creating its own style with multiple recurring themes- all the while attempting to be drilled into your skull as some of the most memorable and uplifting tunes that any video game has provided. I think the reason the music in We <3 Katamari stuck with me as much as it did is because of how much I’d enjoyed the soundtrack of the first game. This soundtrack is heavily influenced by that one, taking the main theme in many different directions including but not limited to awkward acapella, softcore rock, and animal noises (yes that is real). Once again however, it’s diversity where this game truly shines. The tunes playing in each level are wildly different, matching the aforementioned variety of unique stages. Guitar melodies may be followed by a soothing chorus in a vast field of flowers, or a sound-effect filled chaotic tune may play while you race across an island at 5 times the normal speed. One other thing this game does allow is the ability to choose which song you want to play during each level before you play it, although I personally stuck to whatever the game had preset. I greatly enjoyed the music of We <3 Katamari, and I look forward to creating a playlist that incorporates the best of from both games. 10/10

Gameplay: Here’s the big ‘un. The most important aspect of any video game, especially one so based around the uniqueness of video games as a medium- gameplay. This is where We <3 Katamari differs most from Katamari Damacy, although it may not be apparent at first. The controls (unsurprisingly) are unchanged, and you have no new abilities or upgrades to your ball- but the important part is everything surrounding the actual Katamari mechanics. The level design and pacing and progression have all been majorly overhauled between entries, and I’ll devote time to the changes on each aspect. First with the level design. As I’ve mentioned in the previous sections, this is the way We <3 Katamari stands furthest apart from the original. Every level is much smaller in scale, taking place in one type of location, such as a campground or a zoo, in one building, such as a single school, or even just one kid’s room. Tied into these more focused stages are many unique mechanics, which vary wildly from level mechanics. In one level you’re be tasked with keeping a ball aflame to grow big enough to light a bonfire, making it necessary to manage your fuel levels by focusing on collecting burnable objects, as well as avoid water to make sure your Katamari doesn’t instantly go out- which would force you to restart the stage. Another level has you rolling a skinny sumo wrestler around a town, picking up food and allowing him to grow in size so he can fulfill his dream of winning a sumo tournament. Next is pacing and progression, which is the part of this game I had the biggest issue with- and unfortunately is the main reason this doesn’t get a perfect score (spoilers). The problem originates from the exact thing the level design does so well, which is smaller scale missions and more consistent size. This means the game as a whole doesn’t have the same sense of progression that made the first game so addictive. You no longer start out small then consistently grow until you’re absorbing literal continents, but instead stay approximately the same size, except for one level in the middle where you’re able to reach over 1000m. This means that the final level, which I won’t spoil, is oddly anticlimactic since its scale feels completely out of place. This same final level has another side though, because it’s actually given to you early- but you aren’t able to finish it quite yet. This isn’t necessarily a good thing, since I think the game would have been fine without this change, but it’s still an interesting way to show progression. Gameplay gets a 9/10.

Verdict: We <3 Katamari is a fantastic game. It’s lightyears ahead of the original in some ways, that lead to a much more diverse experience, but also takes a step back from one of the main aspects that made the first game so addictive. It’s quirky, unique, and most of all a ton of fun. It’s a game I’d recommend to anyone who enjoyed the original game, and even to those who just want something new. In my opinion these two games, We <3 Katamari and Katamari Damacy, are two different beasts that work best in a pair. One gives you a more grand and god-like story with an incredible sense of progression, while the other shows you the intimate side of the world and it’s people, along with a hearty dose of well... heart. We <3 Katamari is a must play, and gets a 9/10 from me.

I like to think I’m funny, but I’m not. And you’re always one of them to laugh no matter how stupid they are. Nine, you put up with the outrageous clothes and shopping that I do. Like how are you okay with the fact I take up the closet space in this office? That’s too many clothes and you should be taking my credit cards away from me, but you don’t. You just let me go shopping cray cray for the kids, you, and myself. Ten, your smile is just everything. I’ll be feeling down but just looking at you when you smile or laugh makes brightens my day, it’s all contagious.  eleven, your creativity. You’re more creative than I’ll ever be in my life. You can come up with so much for your channel and things to do out of it. Twelve, you don’t give up on me. I know I could do anything and you’d be on my side, cheering me on. Thirteen, all the random ‘just because’ text messages you’ll send me. When I had to be up at four to be on set, and you’d text me good morning or good night if I had to be there late. I loved those, and still love all the random text messages. Fourteen, you buy me flowers! I haven’t had as many flowers given to me as much as I have had in the past year. They were on special days or just random, but I always looked forward to it. Fifteen, you’re allergic but yet you let us have seven dogs, not eight because we technically count Butters no matter how much I want to count her in this because she is part of the family, and every single one of them in our bed. Sixteen, I randomly start to smile when you cross my mind. This has been a thing since we started dating. I’ll be at work or just talking to my mom and I’ll randomly start grinning whether or not your name was brought up. Seventeen, you wanted to me marry me. You knew within three months that you want this lifetime commitment to me, no matter how fucking insane it might have been to a lot of people. Eighteen, you put your family first. The kids, your parents and siblings, me, we all come first. You’ll stop whatever and come home if you’re out of town. Nineteen, you open doors for me. It’s been over a year, but that’s something you do and I feel like might always do. Twenty, you don’t care if I look like a slob. I can be walking around for five days not have showered with fucking baby spit up somewhere on my body and still in sweats, and you act like you don’t care. Twenty one, you let me sleep in or sleep when the babes wake up in the middle of the night. Sure, when the babies wake up and you tell me to go back to bed, there’s a chance I’ll stay awake until they stop crying and you’re back in bed, but the thought that you care enough about how much I need sleep means a lot.  Twenty two, you’ll go on stupid 1am food runs when I’m hungry or when I was craving food. Twenty three, you do your best to help out with the house and clean it. Twenty four, you do make a good pillow. I could sleep on you for days if I had the choice. You’re squishy. Twenty five, you’re proud to have me as your wife. No matter how dumb or annoying I can be, you always seem proud when you tell people about us. Twenty six, the fact that you wanted to give me this big wedding. I didn’t want this at the beginning. I was fine with going to the courthouse the morning after getting married in front of the judge, but you loved me enough to give me a fairy tale wedding in a castle.Twenty seven, you kiss my forehead. It’s sweet, someday I prefer that rather than you just going straight to the lips. Twenty eight, you’re kind to everyone. You’re kind to Tyler and with how he’s always been to you, I never expected for you to be kind to him. Twenty nine, You’re respectful of my parents. I realized that one when you refused to get married until you got the okay from my father and then you went on to prove how much you loved me to them that night. You always call them ma’am and sir no matter how many times my mom tells you it’s Shannon and Jeff or even mom and dad. Thirty, you’re some pale bastard who burns in sunlight. Forty two, you put up with me when I was crabby, bitchy, and non caffeinated for months thanks to Luna and Peter. Forty three, we have no secrets. If we ask each other something, we’re straight up honest about it. Forty four, we’re a really good team together. forty five, you talked me into doing something I never done before. I wouldn’t be able to do this video or doing youtube if it wasn’t for you. Forty five; your voice in the morning. Forty six, you make a date out of anything even if it some picnic in the park for an hour or just laying in bed and watching movies for a day. Forty seven, you pick the best movies to watch. Forty eight, all of our cute little nicknames. From my american girl and my irishman to cosmo and wanda. they all mean something little to us. Forty nine, How smart you are you. Fifty, when I’m lazy, you always let me sit on your lap and you’ll take me up and downstairs. Or if I fall asleep on the couch, I end up waking up in the bed.
