L.A. Calling
From one red-head protagonist to another, I thought the brief lull during the holiday season (for games I was interested in anyways) would be the perfect opportunity to try out the Burning Shores DLC for Horizon: Forbidden West. After all, there was a reason why I kept the game despite finishing it after a hundred hour marathon of a month gaming last year. That reason, of course, was to ensure I knew the new story threads leading into the third game. But with the passing of Lance Reddick, it was also a chance to catch a glimpse of his last performance as Sylens - Aloy's reluctant ally.
So, from the highs of the Star Wars universe, I plunged back down to a post-apocalyptic Earth where robot dinosaur roam and a rogue A.I. is hurtling back to destroy what remains of humanity. Good stuff!
Tumblr media
Following on from the ending of Forbidden West, Burning Shores sees Aloy heading down to the ruins of Los Angeles after being notified by Sylens that Walter Londra, a member of Far Zenith, had headed there following his arrival on Earth. Aloy agrees to investigate and heads down the coast on the back of a Sunwing.
As she approaches the the remains of Los Angeles, Aloy is shot down by a drone tower. With the help of Seyka, a member of the Quen, they take down the machines in the area before heading to Fleet's End: the settlement the Quen have made since floundering in Los Angeles after a typhoon.
It isn't long before Aloy agrees to help the Quen out and find their missing people. And it certainly wasn't very long before I was scrambling across the map of old Los Angeles to scrounge up collectibles and completing the scattered side quests and errands available on the map.
Could it have benefited with having a Tallneck to climb up? Yes, but given Aloy had flight on her side (granted soon after taking down the first drone tower), it wasn't very long before I managed to explore most of the map and engaged with a few select new machines like the Bilegut and the Stingspawn.
Tumblr media
From a narrative perspective, Burning Shores didn't really add anything new to the overarching plot except another scavenger hunt across an open world for a weapon to take down Nemesis. Or, perhaps, the third game will truncate the search a little by focusing it once more in some area of the North Americas. Here's hoping, though, the Horizon series takes our allies across the seas and try something a little more different from the remnants of the ol' United States of America.
At the very least, though, Aloy walked away from the adventure with a new ally she was keen to work with. All throughout the DLC, Seyka stayed by Aloy's side and proved to be an effective fighter. Was it any wonder she proved to be Aloy's first actual love interest?
Both of them are capable warriors and hunters of machine. Both are practical problem-solvers, doing what needs to be done instead of fussing about if it'll offend someone's sensibilities. And both are driven.
I'm actually somewhat relieved Aloy didn't try to push Seyka away. Although, it did take her a while to finally admit the impending threat that was Nemesis heading back towards Earth, keen to destroy the Earth. Still, Seyka had her own secrets when it came to her sister and her fears Kina had willingly joined up with Walter Londra (a fairly forgettable antagonist) who was willing to irradiate the surrounding land in order to escape back into space and be surrounded by a loving and brainwashed cadre of followers.
Tumblr media
Combat-wise, Burning Shores added in a few new different skills to tackle on enemies. In the end, though, I found myself still relying on tried and true abilities. Given it had also been a year since I last played Forbidden West, my skills were also quite a bit rusty. So, I'm not ashamed to admit I did dumb the difficulty down just to ensure I could enjoy the story rather than struggle in a high-end area because I'd forgotten Aloy couldn't parry attacks like Cal Kestis or that the way she normally tackled enemies was from afar with ranged attacks.
It was also a matter of relearning the status effects of the game, like drenched and frozen and shock and corrosion.
Targeting weak points also proved to be a trying affair after all the different games I'd played over the year. Especially given how the machines move and make it difficult to target the one spot that'll do MASSIVE damage.
Or maybe I just need to 'git gud' as the pro gamers like to say.
Overall, I enjoyed my time with Burning Shores. It was good to dive back into the Horizon universe and tackle on a map that wasn't as large as the base game. It also helped there weren't a ton of collectibles needed to be found and unearthed. So, my map wasn't entirely pockmarked with '?' to drive my curiosity and insatiable need to uncover every. Single. Point. Of. Interest.
Thank goodness for small mercies.
Now, if you'll excuse me, there are huge open-world games where I need to collect a thousand and one items calling my name.

I just noticed I didn't tell you yet--which is shameful as it is Tumblr where the Mermaid Scientist was born! My Mermaid Book was picked up by Eye of Newt and is available for pre-order right now (it's coming out very soon, though, so any orders should make it until Christmas if that's a concern of yours)! If you're in North America, I'd suggest ordering directly through my publisher's website, however it's available anywhere you'd usually order books. You can ask your favourite indie book shop to order it for you or--if there's no other option or you're worried about crazy shipping costs where you live--it's available via the place starting with A, which shall otherwise not be named, as well. Please note: This is an edited version of the original book. It's shorter, but with more coherent world building and a beautiful new layout and design. It's a proper field guide now!

Was tagged by @oceancamp to post my current five favorite songs! (They should invent a stages-of-grief-esque model that encompasses and accurately describes both types of anguish I had to go through making this list - the one of limiting myself to only five songs, and the one of trying to put as little videogame music on here as possible so that I don't end up looking like an absolute goddamn geek, which... I am... Oh well!)
Thank you so much for tagging me - here are the songs!
Heaven Pierce Her - War Without Reason
Tatsuro Yamashita - Love Space
This specific arrangement of Death And Republic + Meet Again
Winger - Junkyard Dog (Tears On Stone)
The Protomen - Light Up The Night
Is it courtesy to tag other people after you've been tagged in a post like this? If that's the case, I'll tag @spiralled-fury, @solradguy, @swamppossum, @five-by-five, @northstarring, @ineedmoredragons and @tbonechessor!
#logs#ya don't have to participate if you don't want to‚ from what i've gathered - it's all just for fun anyway :]#The link to Yamashita's song is actually a link to a website that hosts city pop songs‚ since those keep getting taken down on YouTube due#to the strictness of Japan's copyright laws with regards to music. Uploads of Yamashita's songs in particular get taken down quite#frequently... The rest are either Bandcamp or YouTube (in case of Junkyard Dog) links#Very out-of-character of me not to put a Кино song on here‚ haha#I had a hard time deciding whether to put HOLD BACK THE NIGHT or Light Up The Night here‚ but ultimately decided on Light Up The Night#because... hoo boy#okay storytime. i've known of the protomen since somewhere around 2021. got The Good Doctor in my recommended feed‚ clicked on it because#i thought the album cover was cool + the title was appealing‚ but i never really listened to anything theirs beyond that song after that.#fast forward to 2022. be me‚ watching the greatest videoessay on planet earth (Steak Bentley's Metal Gear Solid 4 Was A Mistake).#the fucking MONTAGE comes on‚ and I fall in love with my second Protomen song. second fast forward to 2023 going into 2024‚ finally got#around to playing the Violence update. i learn of the name of level 7-2. the widest‚ most mischievous grin appears on my face.#i enter the level‚ proclaim ''ULTRAKlLL IS NOW A STEAK BENTLEY REFERENCE'' and blast the song as i get my ass beat by every single thing in#that level.#and let me tell you. getting mollywhopped ten thousand times by the FUCKING GUTTERTANK TRIO AT THE END OF THE LEVEL WAS. not a pleasant#experience. but the song made it better. :) (i played the level before the balance patch came out and uh let's just say i had more deaths on#that level than on 2gabe and 1gabe. SEVENTY-FOUR. FUCKING. RESTARTS. JESUS /CHRIST/.#goodness how i yearn to make a 3d animation of v1 going through 7-4 with that song in the background as a tribute to the man himself but#alas i am a student who has everything in the world but time#thanks for the tag again!! ^^

So do you think the “job Cookie names” (you know, one’s like Adventurer and Muscle, etc) are like, chosen names?
Because I don’t think Cookies like Adventurer or Knight were baked as an adventurer and knight respectively (I mean, maybe Knight could have been baked by the Witches to be a knight, but we know Adventurer comes from a family, so he probably fully grew up). You have to rise to the rank of knight and Adventurer is what he is in spite of his aristocratic background. Did they originally have different names but chose to take on these names as sort of a title indicating what they are?

Thinking about how King and The Collector were both named for what they were / thought they were rather than having their ‘own names’ given
King in Sense and Sensitivity saying how King is ‘more of a rank than a name’ . How he, his whole life, must have thought that he’d forgotten his true name when his memories were wiped (which, of course, never really happened).
How, in Echoes of the Past, he muses whether the symbol at the tower was his given name. Him wondering aloud to Luz ‘Is it ok to still call me King? It feels kinda weird when I’m not the king of anything’. Finding comfort in Luz’s words (‘Well, you’ll always be king of my heart. That’s good enough, right?’) and deciding that he’s ok being called King despite the fact he never really was a king of demons. The name finds new meaning for him separate from what he’d always dreamed of his whole life, in a way he’s ok with. It’s his name, despite it all, even when he feels his whole identity and view of the world and himself has been shattered
Meanwhile, there’s The Collector, whose name is also clearly just a title, just a statement of their species. They never get to be distinguished from the other Collectors, just one in this group of unknown number, and yet he so desperately wants to be better than them, and do their philosophy right. He thinks they did it all wrong, and yet they keep following the same basic guidelines as the others. The Collector has known nothing of individuality for however long he’s existed. They don’t realize things could ever be different, or that he could be more, and that there could be a different life for them. He probably never had proper parents or guidance or love. They don’t even have a name. Just a vision of what a Collector is meant to do, and a determination to do it RIGHT
And what does this all mean?? I’m not sure exactly hahah, It’s just something i noticed. Names are a HUGE part of personal identity, and I think these two can serve as sort of opposite parallels. King who has found his true identity through his arc, letting go of his fantasy and embracing who he really is, while the Collector is still clinging to the role and story he was given (and that he made up himself, partially! They edited the Collector book!) and trying to bend things to how they think it should be

the owl house daemon au ends at a perfect place. it gives closure to everyone who's gotten a pov across the entire series and finishes with luz and mari, who are undoubtedly the main character of the entire series.
......but what if i wrote a future fic starring the collector going to hexside--

camila is no stranger to intimacy, to companionship as some would say more delicately, even if the acts they engage in are anything but. she also knows that beatrice has been as haunted as much as she’s been freed, waiting even as she’s living. or: camila learns about beatrice's strap; she helps in her own way
(mind the rating 🙈)

I’m reading Persistance: All Ways Butch And Femme and lemme tell you it’s doing wonders for everything -- feelings about gender, politics, language, relationships
every time I think I’ve come at some unknowable concept about myself that nobody could possibly understand and I’m totally alone (or at the very least I’m something new and fragile), reading about other queers makes me understand that actually it’s existed possibly forever and I can calm tf down and stop being so angsty, it’s not fragile at all, it’s years of others living these things into reality!
anyway, us lonelies under 30 (and over 30 too quite probably) who think we’ve reinvented the wheel and nobody could possibly get it, we need to read this sort of stuff to get out of our own heads and to respect where we came from and maybe all the fucking discourse can chill out and we won’t be so afraid of changes and concepts that already exist and have done for a lot of years!

Unfriendly First Meetings
Okay so today I posted the /actual/ whump fic for the Many Follies of Mortal Existence for Twilight, but this is the one I had pre-written but ended up trashing because I didn't like it -reasons completely unknown- and couldn't stand to make myself fix it so I /did/ like it.
Instead, I'm throwing on here in all its unfinished misery, so that it isn't a complete waste of my time.
So here it is: Jaws that Bite
----------------------------------------------
Summary:
Twilight meets the Chain.
It’s just too bad he was scoping these armed strangers out in his wolf form, and that several of the heroes have lupine enemies that they’re all too accustomed to killing without hesitation.
----------------------------------------------
When Link  came across the group of armed hylians as he was burning off some excess energy in the woods he immediately began following them, suspicious of them and their weapons and the way they seemed comfortable and accustomed to a wandering life, lost but clearly unconcerned by it.
He’d seen it often enough, even with the kingdom on the mend after Ganon’s defeat: brigands, taking advantage of the still unorganized army and weakened forces of the crown, attention focused on settling matters in Castletown before it could be turned farther out. They seemed to be trying to decide which way to go before settling on south.
Ordon lay that way, and with so many armed raiders the village wouldn’t stand a chance of escaping without casualties. That said, eight was a bit many for even Hylia’s hero to take on at once, especially with two kids involved that he wouldn’t want to risk hurting. When the group settled down and sent three out into the woods, he had his chance at last.
Link crept closer, trying to get a better read on them before he shifted and tried to talk the duo down before resorting to violence, though he doubted they’d listen. They never listened, it seemed.
Too close, maybe.
He’d made not a sound to give himself away, and yet he was forced to lep back as an arrow sang through the air from the trees behind him, a third hylian stepping into view with another arrow settling on his bowstrings, his scent was near untraceable: forest-y and natural and most importantly, downwind.
The archer lets out a warning whistle, and just like that the whole group’s attention snaps their way.
Retreat would be the better option, wiser, but-
There was only so much distance left before they hit Ordon, and who knew if they’d split up again knowing a wolf was on the loose. This would be his best chance at wiping them out, and that thought was all he needed to growl and duck behind a tree, determined to take out the archer first. He was already alone, and arrows would be a pain to deal with when he’s trying to take down the other two. He darts out the other side and lets the next arrow trace a line of pain down his side with a yelp of pain in favor of maintaining his forward momentum, slamming the slender hylian into a tree with a snap of bone, grabbing the bow as he does so and severing the string with his teeth. He skipped back just in time to avoid a blind swipe of a sword, the other gasping for the breath Link’s full-grown wolf form had knocked right out of him.
The one in red is on him before he can follow up on the openings of the injured archer, and it's surprisingly all Link can do to avoid the vicious stabs and looping swipes of the other, the swordwork at play much better than he’d have expected of common raiders.
Zelda had said that they had more desertions than usual though, and none knew better than the knights and soldiers just how ripe the kingdom was at the moment for highwaymen and their ilk. He snarled at the deserter, and in a move faster than any mere wolf could accomplish leapt forward, swiping aside the shield and burying his teeth in the bare knee before him. He nearly missed as the other almost dodge out of the way, snagging more of the calf than intended before the shield was brought back down upon him and he let go with a single vicious wrench of his head.
Another one out of the fight, hopefully- the grim face had done nothing to hide the youth of this fighter either, to his dismay. He was loath to kill them, but if they weren’t retreating from a wolf he doubted they’d surrender to a single hylian, either. Rolling his shoulder where the edge of the shield had buried in it, he paced around them, looping the last hylian as he took up a defensive stance by the red garbed one.
“Definitely infected,” he gritted out as he staunched the bleeding leg, glaring at Link viciously. “Fast fucker- good thing there’s only one.”
“Don’t jinx it, goddess above, Legend,” the armored one said irately, his single eye fixed on Link. Behind him the archer was getting to his feet as well, though clearly dazed based on the way he was leaning heavily on the tree.
Link wasted no time; he sprinted in a zig zag towards the eldest hylian; with a sword so big he’d never catch-
The blade caught him across the ribs, the only thing that saved his life was the quick twist that let it catch upon bone rather than gutting him any deeper.  He rolled back up onto his feet, wobbly but alive, though a low whimper escaped him as blood began to pour in a sheet from the long, deep cut.
The armored raider stepped forward, face empty of emotion, eye pitiless as he flicked that massive blade with terrifying ease.
Link had made a terrible mistake, it seemed. If he was lucky, he’d survive it yet, though. The hylian brought the sword down in a diagonal strike, and Link followed the momentum of the blade, looping back and around the other in a bid to escape and warn the village, to burn the bridge down if that’s what it took to keep these swords from spilling his family’s blood.
An arrow buried itself in his shoulder with a blast of lightning that sent him reeling and convulsing, blinking awake upon the ground and rolling to his feet with barely enough time to tackle the legs out from under the armored hylian as he raised his sword to end Link’s life. It was utterly graceless, leaving them both tangled and sprawling, his claws scrabbling harmlessly over the other’s armor as he pulled himself free in a limping run.
He can make it, even if he can see the archer drawing another arrow -where did he get a second bow from?- and sighting him.
There’s the hum of a blade whistling towards him, broken by a chime and a scream as the sword arcing in from an unseen caped hylian behind the tree went completely awry, missing him cleanly as he tried to dodge away. Link’s arrow-pierced shoulder refuses to bend that way under his weight with a shaft lodged in the joint, though, and with a shriek of pain his leg snags on itself and he tumbles head over heels to the ground, all too aware suddenly of how many raiders have him surrounded at this point, all around him with their swords out and their faces void of compassion, determined to see him die.
“Legend, wait!” He hears through the agony in his shoulder and his own grim panic, his head turning just in time to see the incoming blast of ice without being able to do a single thing to stop it. A sheet of cold immediately sinks deep across his torso, leaving him thoroughly immobile, trapped with ice coating both forelegs and his entire body from hip to neck.
Link can’t shift like this, not unless he wants to risk crushing something important if the magical ice proves stronger than his bones. He snaps helplessly as they draw in, concerned for their injured friends, directing far more attention towards threatening their wounds than the now incapacitated wolf in their midst.
Link twists his head, teeth scratching harmlessly from the ice, twisting immediately to snap at the scarfed hylian walking a circle around him with a naked blade, moving away from his jaws to his unprotected hind legs. I
No, he won’t die like this, he can’t leave his family and friends to face these men without warning!
“Shit,” the scarfed hylian winces, sheathing his blade as the caped raider joins his side, holding a glowing sword tenderly in his hands, face tight with pain and remorse.
Oh fantastic; at least he’d feel bad about killing a wolf. That’s more than Link usually got, to be honest, and it had to come from a brigand. Speaking of, the kid who most looked the part was leaning in as close as he could before the scarfed hylian snagged his arm and pulled him well away from Link’s warning snarls, though he couldn’t bring himself to snap at the kid.
“Oh, we fucked up,” he said, hissing between his teeth.
The white caped hylian crouched down on his heels before the wolf, laying the sword to the side and revealing badly burned palms as he lifted them in a show of harmlessness.
“Hi Link,” he said, causing the hero to immediately still and go silent. “I… think we owe you some apologies.”
And that? That almost sounded like he might just get out of this alive yet.

Someone was asking me today what my middle name was and I swear I had literally forgotten? Not because I don’t use it but because I use the masc version of it because no one ever refers to me by my middle name. I was riding the crucial constanat letter trying to reverse engineer the final vowel to a nice feminine letter
