POTO adaptations analysis — Part 2 — The Phantom of the Opera (1987), by Al Guest and Jean Mathieson, starring Aiden Grennel and Collete Proctor
Tumblr media
Oh this goofy ass animation... here we go
Positive points:
– it's weirdly Leroux accurate
– the cellars are very well designed to be fair
– it has some cool tension scenes (for kids sure but still)
– Erik's voice acting is pretty fine
– Raoul is treated as the selfish asshole he is supposed to be 🙏🏼
– we have The Persian! Yay!
– the ending includes both the Grasshoper and the Scorpion and the heartbreaking redemption
– we have iconic Leroux Erik lines!
– Christine pities and defends Erik during most of the time 💞
– Erik's deformity is surprisingly well made, although his eyes are so weird
Negative points:
– the animation is so crappy and takes away the imersion and seriousness most of the time
– the designs are so horribleb holy shit, Christine is the most generic whatever and Raoul looks like Elvis Presley, Erik's clothes are also meh
– Daroga has the most racist and inacurate representation 🤦🏽‍♀️
– ERIK KILLS A CAT??!! Erik hates people, sure (yet he doesn't kill them just because he doesn't like them), but he is a complete Team Animal person. Look how well he treated Cesar, why he killed a cat here?! It makes no sense, Erik would never kill innocent animals
– holy shit the Masquerade scene, wtf are Christine and Raoul wearing?? and Red Death also (great for memes but as an adaptation is so WHAT??)
– PotO shouldn't be made for kids, all the nuances and sexual themes of the story are completely forgotten and the characters lose their depth
– i missed Carlotta's arc at lot
– idk if i consider this a bad point, but anyway some random dude dies in the middle of the story and The Persian accuses Erik of killing him, Erik didn't even have the time to defend himself
– Erik's past is not explained, not even briefly
Movie score: 6/10 🌕🌕🌗🌑🌑

Am I just a delusional shipper or does this feel like it should have been a thing?
Spoilers for Gargoyles (1972) ahead.
Tumblr media
"Go on, your voice pleases me."
"'The sin was not my own, but forced upon me by the incubus; who overnight did slip into my bedchamber and taunt and seduce me with demon's promises until I was as if on fire. He was of uncommon height and finely built. A devil's face of frightful beauty that did put me in a spell. I had no will of my own, but did let the incubus do his will until I was driven mad.'"
Those are actual lines out of the movie. I didn't paraphrase. At all. I played the scene where she was reading out of the book, and typed every word she said. This is a movie about demons who "sometimes take human women" who are trying to conquer the world. Also, in this movie, the gargoyles with wings are the breeders. This one says as much. He was basically the leader. His reaction to being told that he's lost is literally, "Not as long as there are two winged breeders."
Tumblr media
Also, the way the gargoyle acts when he first sees Diana just SCREAMS "shipping fuel". If this were written in the modern day, they would have done it. You can't convince me otherwise. You know why I say that?
BECAUSE THE 90s DID IT!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don't care that these two stories have nothing to do with one another. This is a really good comparison. And, even if it wasn't, I have plenty of fuel for this fire. (I don't even need my usual go-to of vampire movies to prove this point.)
Diana and The Gargoyle fit into two categories that I love and frequently ship. Hero/Villain (though I guess this is more damsel/villain) and Human/Monster. I'm going to give examples from both categories that I will die shipping. (They overlap quite a bit, actually.)
Jareth the Goblin King x Sarah Williams
Tumblr media
Katara x Prince Zuko
Tumblr media
Rey x Kylo Ren/Ben Solo
Tumblr media
Vlad Dracula x Mina Murray/Mina Harker
Tumblr media
Erik x Christine Daaé
Tumblr media
Batman/Bruce Wayne x Catwoman/Selina Kyle
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Elisa Esposito x The Amphibian Man
Tumblr media
Catherine Chandler x Vincent
Tumblr media
So, with all that context in mind,
DOES THIS REALLY LOOK LIKE THAT MUCH OF A STRETCH?!?!

i have ideas for some poto rewrite mysteries and one of them was a little mystery about the 1873 salle la peletier fire, but i’ve turned it into something so much more! ;)
christine is spooked af when erik tells her about the ernest legend (around halloween time!) and her fear grows when mysterious things start happening, things that aren’t the opera ghost’s fault. throw in a mysterious sound in the water cellar corridor that clearly doesn’t belong to erik and a newspaper article about a woman’s death by fire in ‘73 and you’ve got yourself a haunting question... could ernest be real? :o
while christine is figuring that out, she decides to perform a small part in the latest opera. the only problem is that her song is a duet that has alike actresses and no one else sounds like her... no one except everyone’s fave rouge-wearing, romance-loving, curtsy-enjoying, ghost-appearing demiboy! ;D
...who sounds a lot like christine ;)
after some vague threatening from the opera ghost, erik is now luciana petrie, the twin of mira petrie! he gets to sing with christine as a girl and it’s awesome ^_^
what’s not awesome is... CARLOTTA ESPINOZA IS BACK BISHES >:)
her fiance is locked up for trying to kill the phantom of the opera and her heart was too, but 3 months later, she’s ready to sing again! too bad christine’s still here...
but wait! why are there two christines? who in the world is this mysterious tall woman with the golden voice that clearly sounds better than su alteza real y perra? carlotta asks a still costumed erik who he is and he introduces himself as kristin claudin devereux (and she’s very charmed to meet carlotta, dear!)
later, christine asks erik why he did this and he says that carlotta definitely knows about him thanks to piangi spilling the beans during his arrest. besides, she seemed happier when talking to ‘kristin’, a side he and christine have never seen before! not only is this a chance for erik to craft a third persona (after og and mr. e), but it’s a clever way to get to know carlotta...
maybe she’s too earnest compared to how she was before? ;)

"Now I've had the time of my life No, I never felt like this before Yes, I swear it's the truth And I owe it all to you"
This is a very, very special drawing for me. ✨
In September of last year, I watched Dancing With The Stars' "Step Into the Movies" special again, at the end of which they recreate "The Time of My Life" scene from Dirty Dancing. And that sent me on a nostalgia trip back to my high school theater days over a decade ago now, where the drama club accepted my idea to do a "Time of Our Lives" theme, and a performance for that song à la Glee. Mind you, I was mainly the stage manager/techie sort, but I did some scenes for the showcases, and participated in this song with my then-boyfriend, along with two other couples.
And while we were hanging out in the green room backstage, a friend took some pictures of us. Including the one that directly inspired this drawing of Webby + Lena.
This started out as a memory remix of that photo, after watching the DWTS special, because I thought these two lovebirds would be really cute subjects for it.
But once I got going, it turned into a love letter, for many things.
As part of the remix aspect of it, I now picture myself in Lena's spot in the photo, getting to have the short hair I wish I had had back then, and getting to wear a suit and tie! (Yes, in the original photo, I am wearing the dress and red bow Webby's sporting here, and I have long hair. 🙈 Though I will say here that the little heart necklace she's wearing is exactly like the one I had, too! :)) Drawing this was really cathartic for my nonbinary self. 💜
And as for Webby, in this remix, she represents someone that, in retrospect, I wish I had shared this moment with from back then. In many ways, she really was the Webby to my Lena. 💜💖💝
(Literally) beyond the subjects of this though, this is indeed very much a love letter to a lot of things, to passions. The background is pretty much a replica of the drama classroom wall we were in front of for the photo, at least as far as layout goes, with a few direct recreations of things that were on the wall and on the table there. Everything else was me being a passionate (theatre) nerd.
(Details (many details) of said nerdiness and alternate versions below the cut!)
I've included un-blurred and background-only versions (and a version with drop shadow lines on the girls, because why not? it's a cool effect!) below, but I just want to point out the details, because I'm so dang proud of this.
The posters/programs for The Phantom Blot of the Opera, Featherspray, Chickago, and My Fair Dewey are obvious duck-parody references to their real-world counterparts (with the latter being the exact poster they use in DuckTales, in Dewey's dream in "Nightmare on Killmotor Hill!" So thanks, Dewey! 😂). The Featherspray one was also included because Hairspray was one of the shows we did in high school! And lemme just say, creating theater posters is really fun!!
The MJ the Musical poster and the half-shown Notre Dame de Paris "Duckbill" right behind Lena's head are particularly special to me, since they (along with Phantom) are my favorite musicals, and getting to draw those two was especially fun!
The L'Orange Theater poster in the top-right is a bunch of duck easter eggs in one - the L'Orange Theater is mentioned and seen in the very first episode of DuckTales 1987, and of course, there's Aquarioon from DT17! Looks like it toured in Duckburg a long time ago. 😉
And the sheet music is the DuckTales theme! (Or at least the left side of it :P)
The "Congrats" card, calendar (the whale for upper half was my own touch), folder, page of random backstage stuff behind Lena's head (which includes little Star Trek and Darkwing Duck references), and golden "Theatre" card (with my old director's favorite quote) are directly from the photo (or at least based on what I could see through its blurriness 😝), as is the very edge of a cast photo in the upper-right. The purple note (totally not with any secret messages whaaaaat) below that, the certificate of excellence, and the little pride heart pins everywhere are little garnishes/dedications. 😊
The stage/theater diagram below the certificate is really cool, because that's a direct recreation (+ another hidden message) of a project a friend and I did for stagecraft back in our freshman year - I was even able to copy my own handwriting for the labels! 😄😂
The "Time of Our Lives" poster is a reference to the showcase I mentioned above that inspired all this, though the real-life poster looked very different, from what I remember.
The green bag below is sorta a nod to the secret pal exchanges we used to do during shows. 😉
And finally:
The Glittering Goldie show poster is me just having an absolute blast drawing her once again and coming up with something for her Blackjack days! And bonus - I'll be posting a gradient-only version of Goldie tomorrow! Really happy with how she turned out!
And the "All the World's a Stage" poster is me combining all of my theatre nerdiness with my passion for space and a good pun! 😁
ANYWAY...
I learned a lot with this drawing, about creating and about myself.
And I just had so, so much fun with it - it was all love, all passion, all happiness for this one. 💜💖💝
Wishing the same for all of you. ✨
Love, Astro 💜

Trading Site Reopening and Gifting Spree!
So. After weeks of work (*insert alpaca scream here*), my trading site is open for trading! To celebrate, I decided to gift a few audios and videos from Phantom of the Opera, a few audios from Les Misérables, two cast recordings from Elisabeth das Musical, and a cast recording for Sweeney Todd. Enjoy!
(If you're the master of a listed audio/video, please don't hesitate to reach out to me if you want me to remove your stuff from the list.)
POTO audios

POTO videos
Earl Carpenter, Rachel Barrell, David Shannon, Wendy Ferguson, David Lawrence (u/s), Sam Hiller, Emily Harvey (u/s), Heidi Ann O'Brien, Rohan Tickell January 2006 VOB format.  If you want to see Earl in London right now but can't... this video is the best quality overall that features him, and Rachel Barrell is a fantastic Christine - one of my favorites in the role. https://mega.nz/folder/u09GQKyR#gjNHj4Letd9YInTsuLowjA Gary Mauer, Elizabeth Southard, Jim Weitzer, Kim Stengel, John Jellison, DC Anderson, Patti Davidson-Gorbea, Kate Wray, John Whitney April 6, 2006; Dallas VOB format.  For my Eristine moots (I see you!): Gary Mauer and Elizabeth Southard were (and as far as I know, still are) married while performing as the Phantom and Christine, and you thought Ramin and Sierra's chemistry was off the charts, think again. https://mega.nz/folder/PtExxS5A#D4yyf2g_lXoN-cIDPkMU2Q Anthony Crivello, Kristi Holden, Andrew Ragone, Geena Jeffries Mattox, John Leslie Wolfe, Lawson Skala, Tina Walsh, Brianne Kelly Morgan, Larry Wayne Morbitt August 8, 2008; Las Vegas VOB format. This is the Las Vegas Spectacular production, which is abriged compared to the original but totally worth seeing. If you want to understand why I love Meg Giry so much, Brianne Kelly Morgan is one of the best I've ever seen in the role. Also, if you’re meh about Raoul... with Andrew Ragone, think again. He’s one of the most Superman/Clark Kent Raouls I’ve seen. And I really like Kristi Holden’s Leroux-esque Christine too.  https://mega.nz/folder/Sh1zxSAB#twtXau8Y8pd_L9tMQLa4Mg Jeremy Stolle (u/s), Samantha Hill, Greg Mills (u/s), Michele McConnell, Tim Jerome, Richard Poole (u/s), Ellen Harvey, Kara Klein, Christian Sebek March 9, 2013 VOB format. Missing part of Act 1 (‘Stranger Than You Dreamt It’ to Il Muto), but otherwise complete. This is one of the best trios I've seen on Broadway, and Samantha Hill is just a fantastic Christine overall. https://mega.nz/folder/y1slyJRD#OP1Tp5Cj_fMk9LbAWJMqAA Tomas Ambt Kofod, Sibylle Glosted, Christian Lund, Louise Fribo, Carl Christian Rasmussen, Sebastian Harris, Elisabeth Halling, Imogen-Lilly Ash, Rasmus Jupin March 2019; Copenhagen VOB format. This one is more recent, but given it's been uploaded on YouTube, I guess it's fine to gift it (again, if you’re the master and you want me to remove this, please let me know). This one has one of the best casts ever caught on tape. Seriously. Everyone in this is a star. https://mega.nz/folder/q40hTagI#Zui14MWo-F2YSQ0gNdaL6Q

Les Mis Audios
Colm Wilkinson, Roger Allam, Patti LuPone, Alun Armstrong, Sue Jane Tanner, Michael Ball, Frances Ruffele, Rebecca Caine, David Burt 1985; London Preview at the Barbican Centre. Sweeney Todd
2000 Concert Cast Recording George Hearn, Patti LuPone, Davis Gaines, Heidi Grant Murphy, Paul Plishka, Audra McDonald, Standford Olsen, Neil Patrick Harris, John Aler Pretty sure this isn't on Spotify, which is a real shame given its cast. So enjoy! EDIT: Someone pointed out to me that the recording is incomplete - probably a result of the Great Hardware Crash of 2016, so until I get the full version, this will probably stay incomplete. Sorry about that! https://www.mediafire.com/file/ywoiqe5bnlzr7bs/Sweeney_Todd_2000_New_York_Concert_Cast.rar/file

Hello @whynotworms! It took me forever to find the post I believe you're talking about:
Tumblr media
The post was from March 2021! It took me a while to even find it! I don't exactly remember why I was looking for those two pages, though I think it probably had something to do with the Paris Commune.
I think it may have been about George Perry's 1987 book, The Complete Phantom of the Opera. Perry uses Leroux as a reference for Leroux's own mention to the Commune. And Perry takes it as fact, not fiction. So I wanted to see if pages 14 and 15 of the Livre de Pouche edition were part of the introduction or something else. If you took at photo or scan of those two pages I would love to finally compare them to what Perry said! Thank you for reaching out!!
