So much of Garak as a person starts to make sense once you know his childhood was a fucking gothic novel. His main playground was a graveyard and he'd play pretend by perfoming improv eulogies to an imagined audience. For a long time his main touchstone for most important figures from recent history is 'oh yeah I know about that guy my dad buried him. great flower arrangements for that one'. He finds out later his 'parents' are actually a brother and sister who had to get married to avoid the utter shame and social devastation of having a child born out of wedlock, and they live in the basement of his biological father's house. (the madwoman in the attic vs. the tiny elim in the basement.) His biological father calls himself his uncle and locks him in a closet whenever he fails to live up to his insane and unpredictable expectations and everyone just has to act like that's normal and expected, and his will hangs over everything at all times, unseen but always felt keener than anything else. The father who actually raised him grows the world's most beautiful (and as it turns out, most poisonous) orchids and keeps the mask of a god hidden in a box in his work shed. Everyone in the house is choking down secrets like it's the only air they know how to breathe anymore.

What I'm saying is that right from the get-go this guy never had the faintest shot at turning out normal, so I'm glad that by middle age he's found a way to get a bit silly with it as he continues to be deeply deeply not normal about anything ever <3

A new study has confirmed what most sexually active gay men will already know: Less of us are using condoms when we have sex compared to ten years ago. The study, published in AIDS and Behavior, was conducted by researchers at the University of Washington. It drew its data from the American Men’s Internet Survey (2014-2019). It looked specifically at men who have condomless anal sex with men who are not on PrEP. The number of men in the study having condomless sex rose by 2.2% each year. However, the rise was greater in younger men (rising 7.2% per year for those aged 15-24 years) and Hispanic men (rising 18%). Overall, condom use remained more popular than PrEP. This might be partly due to barriers to obtaining PrEP, among other factors. Around 15% of the men were taking PrEP. The vast majority of men questioned believed condoms to be “very effective” (60%) or “somewhat effective” (36%) at preventing HIV transmission. However, 24% said they “never” used condoms, compared to 50% who said they “always” or “sometimes” used them. The remainder said they rarely used them. Clearly, there is a large number of guys having condomless sex who are not on PrEP. If their partner is HIV positive and undetectable, they cannot pass on the virus. However, not everyone knows their HIV status or is on treatment. Besides HIV, condoms can also help prevent the transmission of other STIs. The thing about assigned sex labels (AFAB/AMAB) is that a lot of its usefulness comes from discussions around medicine (though there are still issues with this). In a social sense, AFAB/AMAB isn't very useful to describe peoples' lived experience.

Assigned sex happens to people as babies, and "AFAB" and "AMAB" describe very broadly sex categories. Assigned sex acknowledges past assignment, not current reality with regards to one's sex and/or gender.

I find that when people try to apply sex assignment to social settings (e.g., "all AFABs experience this!"), it comes very close not only to misgendering, but also to sex essentialism in many cases.

I simply think there are too many assumptions made about what every person AMAB has (such as a certain body, a certain gender, and certain lived experiences) and what every person AFAB has. We cannot make sweeping generalizations about people, and I think a lot of people seem to forget this especially with regards to transition and/or "rare" sexes.
