Love Wins All: An Analysis
Here are my notes for the music video. I have more to say, but it's already two in the morning where I live, and I have been sitting here admiring and contemplating IU's artistry since four hours ago. My butt hurts. I will come here later once I let my thoughts marinate.
There's a cube object chasing after them. - The cube is obviously the antagonist of the story. I have no idea why they chose a cube rather than any other creature or shape. Maybe because the design is simple? I think a cube is a smart choice. It looks like human technology, something man-made. The cube may be an invention that was once intended for the benefit of humankind but ended up becoming an instrument for control. The shape of the cube with its equal sides can represent a system that demands conformity.
IU is mute/deaf (she uses sign language), and Taehyung is blind in one eye. - There is one reading by a Korean UAENA about how they represent people with disabilities. There is one cube targeting IU and Taehyung. No other people are shown, but by the end of the music video, we can see several floating cubes outside the building. We can deduce how the cubes may be specifically searching for individuals like them who are marginalized and in hiding.
There is a scene where IU performs on stage, and black figures point their fingers at her. - IU explicitly declared that the song is dedicated to her loved ones, including her fans. We can interpret the black figures as representing people who spread unnecessary hate (혐오) against artists like IU. (Regardless of context, pointing your fingers in Korean culture is considered rude. It is associated with assigning blame or picking out flaws.)
Both the cube and the people in black are forces that persecute and discriminate, respectively. - This reading stems from the fact that IU is a well-known personality in real life and that her character in the story has disabilities.
While there is a male and female lead, the story and the song are not exclusively romantic. LWA is a fan song. Taehyung represents UAENAs.
Tumblr media
While IU sings on stage, he gives her flowers and looks at her adoringly. - They are able to spend moments both happy and sad by each other's side. At the end of the story, Taehyung stands in front of IU to defend her from the cube and destroy it, while IU comforts him and covers his eyes as they're killed.
The camera and the pile of clothes are details prompting an intertextual reading. - This will be familiar to ARMY, but the pile of clothes is an installation by Christian Boltanski. This does not require further explanation since we can infer what it symbolizes from the story's outcome. On the other hand, the camera is something that is more important to the plot than it seems. It captures only the beautiful and healthy appearance of IU and Taehyung. The Korean UAENA I mentioned earlier said that the camera shows an existence where people with disabilities can live happily.
The camera shuts down by the end of the music video. - Nothing is recorded, and the memories are lost. But then, how does "love win all?" Okay, we'll look at the lyrics. "찬찬히 너를 두 눈에 담아 한 번 더 편안히 웃어주렴 (With my eyes, I memorize you thoroughly. Let's laugh in peace once more.)
Artists like IU come and go. - For every single and album she releases, IU writes an introduction. For LWA, she sums up the story as a promise to "fade away together splendidly." Also, the lyrics "필연에게서 도망쳐 Run on" appear, which both mean to run away from (도망쳐, to escape) and to run towards the "inevitable." (Korean is not my first language so pardon me if I'm wrong, but I think there's a mistake with the translation provided in the music video. There, the lyrics say "run away from necessity, run on." They use the word necessity, but she's referring to an event that is certain to occur.)
Memories [of their music and their moments with fans] are all lost to history; what matters is to live in the moment. (You don't need a camera to prove that you existed and lived your life.) This aligns with her values as an artist. In her interviews, IU says her goal is to perform (creation rather than chart success).
You may say that the story is tragic because they both die in the end, but they were at peace since they were together. "일부러 나란히 길 잃은 우리 두 사람" (The two of us, side by side, gone astray on purpose). **Edit: IU Team StarCandy on Twitter translated the phrase 길 잃은 우리 as "[we] who took the road less travelled."
I love the lines "너와 슬퍼지고 싶어 My lover" (I want to be sad with you) and "부서지도록 나를 꼭 안아" (Crush me, wrap me tightly in your arms). It illustrates the relationship between IU as an artist and her fans. The song is a declaration of her intention to cherish the good and bad with us. She does not mind even if the pressure of our love sometimes feels intense. She believes love has the power to break you down, but instead, it builds you up.
Additionally, the line "나와 함께 겁 없이," which is translated as "Will you courageously set with me?" actually more literally translates to "together with me, without fear." There is trust between IU and her lover. In other words, they may not know where the journey leads them, but they consciously choose to walk to it together.
A few more details from the music video that I loved are as follows. I like that the food (the macaron) is connected to memory and joy. It's the end of the world, but they haven't lost their imagination, hope, and ability to delight in each other's presence. In a way, food is crucial to survival in terms of sustenance and because it brings simple pleasure.
After taking a bite, they are transported to a less dreary setting. Their clothes are the same, but they're no longer tattered. Of course, things aren't perfect because while things are more clean, the people themselves remain evil. IU and Taehyung maintain their cheerful disposition even as the black figures appear and surround them.
IU and Taehyung choose to be happy. They dress up and dance around the room despite the reality that everything is still in ruins. (The photo booth is lit in bright, warm colors, while the room outside is cold and blue. Another piece of evidence for this interpretation is that while they're blissfully taking pictures, the strips come out showing Taehyung's milky eyes.)
Tumblr media
I also like the alternative explanation for why IU is deaf, and Taehyung is partially blind. - IU performs happily in front of the crowd of black figures. It may mean that she either cannot hear or will not listen to their words of hate. As for Taehyung, he is partially blind to IU's faults. IU (the idol/artist) is the one leading them as they run while Taehyung (their fan) follows, their hands clasped in each other.
Moreover, neither of them speaks throughout the story. Whether IU is deaf or she signs to avoid making noise and risk their capture, I think it's beautiful that they can communicate through gestures. The relationship between fan and artist goes beyond the need for words (which is ironic, too, since we become fans of IU's music before the artist herself. Through her lyrics, we learn of her personality and how she sees the world).
I LOVE their acting. It's almost scarily good how IU can convey her love through her gaze. The smallest details too!! Her softly tapping Taehyung's shoulder to calm him while he tightly grips her hand as they face death? Chills.
Okay, I'm back. I just want to add this:
I said that the song is not exclusively romantic. However, the element of romance is indeed important to the plot. It elevates the story by depicting people (including those with disabilities) finding love even in the middle of hardship. - Their hardship is not the disability itself but rather the prejudices in the world that limit the possibilities they can enjoy.
IU and Taehyung know that the "end" is "inevitable" (she uses both words in her lyrics), and they know that they can only steal these short moments of happiness, but they still try to "look for the opposite of loneliness" (오랜 외로움 그 반대말을 찾아서).
Trivia: IU says that whenever she's stuck with writing a song, she uses the suggestion of a peer (Kim Eana) to look up the meaning of a word in the dictionary. Thus, giving birth to the idea love = opposite of feeling/being alone.
Love as an act of resistance - Viewing a brighter world through the camera, IU wearing the veil, and the pair teasing the black figures (IU sings on the stage despite their jeering and they run around the room) are acts of resistance. They may have a poor imagination (가난한 상상력), wherein they still desire to become "normal" and without their disabilities, but it is also thanks to their imagination that they are able to endure.
youtube
Note: The translations are mine. It's always difficult to think of how to word sentences that fully preserve the sentiment of the source, especially since they're song lyrics.

I hear you're where to go for Witcher fic recs! How about some with Geralt being protective over Jaskier? Shippy, if you can find any, but I wouldn't mind platonic! I just want Geralt to look out for his bard. Thank you for your time!
Hello!! Here's what I've got! There's a wide variety of settings and levels of angst, so hopefully there should be something for everone :D
As always, please feel free to add more recs or promote your own work in the notes!
~
Don't Leave Me by @geraskierficrecs (Rated M, 6.2k)
Jaskier’s hands tighten around Geralt before slowly losing their grip, spasming where they fall limp. “Ger--geralt--” “Don’t you dare,” he snarls back, “Don’t you dare try to give me your fucking goodbyes. You are not dying.” “S--silly man.” Jaskier’s smile is full of painful fondness. “Would you fight death for me?” Geralt swings him up into his arms and nearly weeps at the sound of familiar hooves running in his direction. “Every. Fucking. Time.”
If You Give a Bard a Lute by @ghostinthelibrarywrites (Rated T, 10k)
After Jaskier’s father disowns him, confiscates all his possessions— including Filavandrel’s lute— and kicks him out with nothing but the clothes on his back, Jaskier spends a long, hungry winter barely surviving. When he reunites with Geralt in the spring, his witcher is determined to get his lute back, even if it means recruiting his fellow witchers to stage a heist.
Wild Blue Yonder by @jaskierswolf (Rated T, 5.3k)
Geralt's bookshop is slowly falling apart and he's ready to give up when Jaskier wanders into the store
remember me I sing by @echo-bleu (Rated G, 3.1k - also includes Yennnefer)
Filavandrel's gift was so much more than a simple lute. It seemed fitting, that Jaskier’s soul would be made of wood and strings and beautiful sounds. The problem is that now Rience has his lute and is threatening to burn it if they don't hand over Ciri. And Jaskier has never told anyone that his very life is tied to his beloved instrument.
This Is How I Disappear by @stacyholmes (Rated T, 5.4k)
Jaskier keeps texting unknown number. Geralt keeps reading said texts without answering.
The Footsteps We Follow by thiswildheart (Rated T, 16.5k)
Look, Jaskier's got a lot going on. He's painfully aware that there are cataclysmic events happening and that the troubled teenager he knows might save the world or speed along the end of days. He's also in love with a man who's never even admitted that they're friends, which is almost as bad. Oh, and he's still working as the Sandpiper, only now a terrifying eldritch creature has entrusted him with the Song of the Seven to give hope to the elves and help them fight back against their oppression. It's probably the bravest thing he's ever done, but not everyone sees it that way. Luckily he knows some people who excel at last minute rescues. ... then he just has to figure out how to tell Geralt why so many people are trying to kill him. This is going to go great.
Getting Warmer (orphaned) (Rated T, 8.2k)
Injured and freezing after a kikimora hunt gone wrong, Geralt and Jaskier must wait out a thunderstorm at the bottom of a cliff, huddling for warmth. It is here that Geralt finally confronts his feelings for the bard.
Jaskier and Mountains Just Don't Mix by C4t1l1n4 (Rated G, 3.8k)
Despite the other Witchers' positive reaction to Geralt's bard, Vesemir is reluctant to have a human stay with them at Kaer Morhen so Jaskier attempts to leave and ends up almost freezing to death on the side of the mountain. Hypothermia fic
Immediately, I Love Him (He's Doing His Best) by @hum-my-name (Rated G, 26.5k)
"In which Greg is some sort of guardian angel, I don't know" <><> A few days ago, Joey Batey did an interview in which he created a lovely little character named Greg. A few days ago, I decided to write a cute little thing about Greg and Jaskier being the best of friends throughout the years, with a dash of Geralt and Jaskier friendship as a treat. 13k words later, here we are. Enjoy.
Broken Mirror by happy_hermit (Rated G, 2.1k)
To Geralt’s credit, he waits until they’re well away from Kaer Morhen to ask the question. He also waits until Yennefer and Ciri have gone to bed, which makes the whole thing feel a bit too calculated for Jaskier’s liking, which is to say that he doesn’t like it at all. “Where’s your lute, Jaskier?” Jaskier doesn’t quite flinch, though his heart does something of the sort all on its own. It is very much a wound that hasn’t healed; as is most of him, these days.
Echo by @kingthunder (Rated E, 29.5k)
Jaskier loses his voice the morning after a concert. As he and Geralt find new ways to fill the silence between them, they realize it isn't only Jaskier's voice that's been lost—and getting it back will bring them closer than they've ever been before.
If There's Any Sleep At Night by @smolalienbee (Rated T, 22.8k)
The mare is but a silhouette of a human and yet at his words something passes through her expression - whether it’s surprise, joy, fear, Geralt doesn’t know. But it’s clear that what he said has struck her in some way. (“She is not some mindless monster, Geralt.” He remembers Jaskier’s words.) A mare, also known as a mara or a zmora - a malicious entity, a bringer of nightmares and a demon of the night. An easy enough contract to fulfill, if only frustrating, or at least that’s what Geralt believes when he first sets out to hunt down one such mare. What he doesn’t expect is to be wrapped up in a tale of a wronged soul, of love and of joy.
Also, because I'm not above reccing my own fics, here's a few I've written!
Wash Away the Blood and Tears by me (Rated T, 1.8k)
Jaskier re-injures his fingers while distracting Nilfgaard from Ciri. Afterward, Geralt volunteers to help wash his hair. Or: In which Jaskier gets a bath and a nap, and Geralt gets a new role in the group.
We'll Build a Den Out of Pillows (And Get Drunk Again) by me (Rated G, 2k)
Jaskier gets sick. When Geralt asks how to help, Jaskier jokingly suggests that he build a pillow fort. He does not expect Geralt to take it seriously. Geralt takes it seriously.
~
If you want more, there’s a Protective Geralt tag on AO3 that I’m sure has many lovely works I haven’t read!

Transformers thoughts that wouldn't leave me alone - Forgotten melodies of eld
I have a bit of a tendency to overthink my favorite media and make strange associations with other things, and Transformers is no different right now. Those robots are spinning in my head like leftover pasta in a microwave. Anyhow, last night I was thinking about Cybertronian music.
(Ramble incoming! Also I might get stuff wrong, I am still fairly new in the fandom, after all. So please, forgive my potential ignorance.)
Now, there usually isn't that much lore on it from what I've seen, which absolutely sucks and I need more. What I've also noticed is that there often seems to be more of a focus on the musical instruments (which I also definitely need more lore on), rather than vocals. And hoo boy do I have thoughts about that specificallly.
Cybertronians have voice boxes, right? And considering their mechanical anatomy, it's pretty safe to say that they can hold on for way longer than our vocal cords. After all, it's not like a computer or its speakers start breaking down after a few hours of music being played continuously. Of course, such a voice box would be more complex, and there are definitely some more unique ways for it to break or damage, but... I generally like to think they are pretty durable when they are used for speech or song. Which brings me to the concept which I decided to call "mechanical elves", or something to that effect.
Now, what does that even mean? It's simple; I was inspired by the portrayal of elven music in various fantasy media, like J. R. R. Tolkien's works. Songs that reach the deepest parts of your soul in an ancient, ellegant language, voices that sing heartwrenching ballads for hours on end about tragedies that happened millennia ago. And I thought... wouldn't that work for Cybertron? Or at least, Cybertron in its beginnings?
You have a race of giant, mechanical beings, many of which have lived for millions of years. And they do love their music, even if we often have no idea what it's like and get only snippets from their culture. You have people like Blaster, who is literally nicknamed "The Voice" in the IDW1 comics and uses his voice to inspire his fellow Autobots, among other things. Just their voice boxes alone have so much potential, and that just makes me feel stuff, honestly.
Why wouldn't they sing for incredible amounts of time without stopping, at least when the times weren't so complicated just yet?
Did the first Cybertronian who ever hummed a melody feel so much joy that he simply kept going and couldn't stop, before excitedly teaching others? When a friendship started to feel more than it already was, did the night start with a passionate serenade sung by a singular voice, which, as the hours went by, turned into a duet full of affectionate words to one another? When a Cybertronian died for the first time, did his brothers sing for his memory, and to survive the sorrow as they had no tears to weep?
Mechanical voices crying out in raw emotion to let the world know they're there, only for others to answer. Languages and dialects no longer spoken, beautifully haunting melodies long forgotten. And as the time went on, the world started to get more and more quiet, before the old compositions finally gave way to the new ones. Perhaps the Titans who yet live still remember a few notes or words once sung.
All that's left of the beginnings now is a requiem doubling as an ode to hope.
Its words?
"'Til all are one."

One of the forget-me-nots would bring an INSTRUMENT? Please elaborate on kitty-cat instruments I’m so curious - also I am picturing Barley Sr. with a cat guitar singing cat country songs.
I have a mostly complete entry on instruments I've been sitting on for a few months, it just needs art before I can release it
BUT they have a couple of them! The one I had in mind is this simple flute-like instrument called a Breezebone. The bones of large birds are hollow and can be made into an instrument with just a few extra holes drilled in, so they're made of geese, ducks, hawks, buzzards, owls, etc.
They then combine that with the horn of an invasive muntjac, sanded down and hollowed out, so it's louder.
It's the sort of thing Barley Sr. would be good at making if you taught him how, but I imagine that either Oakheart and Lizardstripe owns it. Someone else gave them a really nice one, y'know?

My own Dimentio hadcanons (at least for canon Dimentio)
Dimentio's mask is his actual face. He has arms they're just invisible. Dimentio has no sense of taste but does have an appreciation for certain textures. Coming off of that, he will sometimes eat inedible things to freak people out. He also doesn't NEED to eat as his magic is enough to sustain him. Dimentio has no idea how old he is because he lost count. Dimentio wears black colored tights under his clothes. Dimentio does sleep and his dreams are very weird and vivid, if you could see them you'd swear you were witnessing a messed up drug trip. Dimentio knows how to play the piano and the violin and he does it very well too. He also like to play the flute but isn't as skilled with it. His favorite instrument is the slide whistle because it's perfect for annoying his teammates! Dimentio prefers cold weather over hot weather. When it's hot out, he gets so exhausted that he doesn't even bother with his usual theatrics. Dimentio is an avid singer and loves to show off his voice whenever he can get the chance but he oddly prefers not to be heard when singing simple ditties to himself. Dimentio knows how to cook but he's not much of a baker. Ask him to bake bread, you'll just end up with a burnt brick. Dimentio is cartoonishly flexible. If something flattened him, he can just reinflate himself like a balloon. Or if he is burned, he can just shake if off like he was just covered in soot. Dimentio didn't really have a birth, he just kinda...happened.
Tumblr media
That's all I got! Hope you enjoyed listening to my silly rambling! ciao!
Edit: more headcanons I forgot to add!
Dimentio is a glutton for punishment, pain pleases him in a very strange and sadistic way. It just kinda makes him laugh.
One of Dimentio’s favorite songs is “Beautiful Dreamer”.
The concept of love is very confusing to Dimentio. He knows what it is but he fails to understand why people seem to have a constant need and want for it.
Dimentio doesn’t really die at the end of SPM, which is why he’s nowhere to be found in the Underwhere or Overthere. (Like hell he would have ending up in the latter anyway.) it’s a mystery as to what really happened to him.

I started reminiscing about my GCSE years, and decided to try and write a GCSE-Music-style analytical essay on Helluva Boss songs. I ended up getting... Somewhat carried away.
How the different elements of music are used in "House of Asmodeus".
When Moxxie starts singing the melody is conjunct, and the texture is homophonic, with only simple guitar chords+vocals. This simple, classically romantic style of song perfectly represents his love for Millie. After the glockenspiel kicks in, we hear a syncopated clapping rhythm along with his guitar, moving the music away from the diagetic, symbolising their more whimsical love. As soon as Fizz and Ozz start mocking him, the guitar fades.
Ozz and Fizz's first lines are a capella, with a short, 2-note, chromatic saxophone phrase playing in between each line. As Fizz introduces Ozz, each line is punctuated with a staccato saxophone note. We first hear the piano play a sweet, high pitched note at the word "luuuuust".
Ozz then sings mezzo-piano, each line increasing in dynamics, punctuated again by a saxophone, and accompanied by a staccato piano. (This is also where Fizz plays the pretend trumpet- a hint at their own wacky, supportive relationship). He then changes tone, with the piano and bass becoming legato, and accompanying him with a descending chord progression, and you can also hear an arpegiated guitar. This is him mocking Moxie's simple, romantic tune, he then moves back to his a capella arrangement with each line punctuated by staccato notes, desplaying his brutality. He then continues in that fashion, only now accompanied by staccato guitar strumming, parallel to Moxxie's song, but in a minor key. He then continues onto the chorus, the lines previously played by Fizz's imaginary trumpet now done by the piano. During Ozz's "belt moment", the orchestra becomes legato.
Moxxie begins to sing again, moving to his simple major tune, before Ozz takes over again, now accompanied by a slightly different rhythm, the chords going from staccato to legato as they descend chromatically. Interestingly, Ozzie ends this verse in major, and you can hear a short, sweet, melody playing on the glockenspiel. This is as he attacks Millie, calling her an "unsatisfied bride". This juxtaposes his comment, showing that the M&Ms aren't affected by it.
As Blitzø starts talking, the acompanyment slowly crescendos, at a slower tempo, the glockenspiel and guitar being the main instruments you can hear, including when Fizz responds, as they're used in this song to represent sweetness, this forshaddows how Fizz and Blitzø's rivalry has a less bitter ending, and also represents how Blitzø's standing up for the M&Ms.
The electric guitar takes over when Verosica sings, and simple backing vocals are heard in between her lines, reflecting her own style of music. As she disses Blitz, the acompanyment moves up in an ascending bassline.
When Fizzmodeus starts singing about Stolitz, they move back to their previous a capella arrangement, with the orchestra's staccato punctuation being descending rather than ascending, showing how messy and unstable Stolitz is. Ozz's lines are then accompanied again, giving him more power, so when he calls Stolas out on giving up his wife and child for Blitzø, and the acompanyment becomes legato, it leaves a lasting effect.
When he belts his closing lines, every instrument punctuates the lines, the piano playing a short, jazzy descending line after "thrust". Then the lines become accompanied again by staccato instruments. The finale line "in the house of Asmodeus," you can just about hear ornamentation on the piano over the fireworks, before it's cut short by Millie knocking out Fizz.
Moxxie then resumes his simple strumming, the glockenspiel playing a sweet descending line as they lift, the harp swells, and then plays along with the, now even simpler played, guitar. We end with moxxie finishing his line a capella, they kiss, the crowd cheers, Blitzø then ruins the moment by rejecting Stolas wtf.

Disney Song! Yuu [Submission Edition]
Submission by Seajellyx go check them out they're amazing this is amazing I'm combusting in happiness I-
MASTERLIST
Tumblr media
i absolutely love your disney song yuu stuff <33
i’ve been brainrotting about it recently, so here are some assorted thoughts:
so you know how there are certain games and media that incorporate music into their battles or fighting? like rhythm games or hypnosis mic? think of an mc that fights,,, with their voice.. they already sort of use their singing to help in certain situations, but i mean actually battling.
learning different strategies and songs for certain situations, practicing or “sparring,” either with a partner or by themselves, learning which songs can pacify, which can harm, and which can heal, learning how different tempos and pitches change their impact. memorizing those songs by heart, and in the heat of battle, pulling just the right notes and lyrics to completely demolish their enemies with just a song.
imagine yuu learning as they go through their years at night raven, honing their skills until they’re able to heal or power up their allies, or demolish entire armies with hellfire or powerful shockwaves, just from a song.
on that note, a yuu that plays an instrument!
i think that would make their songs all the more powerful, since the accompanying melody boosts the power of the lyrics. (bard yuu lol) the characters that play an instrument would definitely want to do a duet. there's not much to say ab it i just think it's neat.
yuu in the light music club
chaos ensues.
cater, kalim, and lilia are ECSTATIC, every cult member and/or yuu stan is clamoring to join the club (but oopsie daisy unfortunately we can’t fit any more members in our band :) sorry~)
and also yuu is banned from singing the Forbidden Tunes during club activities, for safety reasons
but they’re still a great singer! along with cater’s voice, lilia’s guitar skills, and kalim’s drumming, they make for a harmonic team. the band both writes their own music and does covers. (do you think that because twst is a disney game, any twst song or any song written in tw is a Lyric?? could yuu literally just write their own spells????!)
and the club does shows every once in a while! they even get cool themes and costumes. (tickets sell out shockingly fast, it’s brutal (azul is punching the air))
possible band names could be: siren and the songbirds (personal fave), nightingale(s), fantasia, and sirensong
me beating my boyband(gn)/faux kpop group au urges back with a stick
yuu does regular performances at the mostro lounge!
sometimes they’re planned, sometimes they’re a surprise event, and sometimes yuu just gets up on stage and starts busting out the tunes
occasionally, it’ll be a big event, one that you have to buy a ticket/reserve a seat for. and the lounge is decorated and yuu has a fancy schmancy outfit and all that good stuff~
but most of the time it’s a more casual (as casual as mostro lounge can get, anyways) thing. it’s a regular night at the lounge, yuu is wearing a simple yet lovely outfit, and they’re up on the stage crooning some relaxing jazz~
azul is having the time of his life raking in that sweet sweet cash and some sweet sweet eye candy, floyd has had to be held back several times from hopping onto the stage, jade is just enjoying the music, and every yuu stan is either dying of happiness, or crying themselves to sleep (if they didn’t manage to snag a ticket/reservation)
(i like to think that pomefiore (mostly just rook and vil, really) and/or crewel does yuu’s hair, makeup, and overall styling)
finally i actually submitted these, sorry for taking so long lol
there is actually more where that came from so stay tuned? lol

oooh what do the RO's think about an MC who sings and has written a few songs? :)
I don't know much about songwriting but I do know that it's hard! And singing is a talent most people think is easy, but it's also quite hard too (spoken from experience lmao. #authorlore I did voice (singing) for my chosen instrument in gcse music about 9 years ago!)
Unfortunately, Nate... doesn't care all that much. If you keep it to yourself he'll pretend he doesn't know you have these skills. If you're outspoken and proud about it he might get a little passive aggressive if he feels like you're getting more attention than he is.
One might think that Eva might consider you competition, considering her aspirations for being a singer herself. However, Eva would absolutely adore an MC would could sing and write! She would encourage you to sing for her and with her every chance she gets. She might ask if she can sing your songs, for she's not that adept at writing herself and she would want to share your talents with anyone who would want to listen!
Mica probably already knew of your talents for singing and writing, being your best friend from a very young age. However, if you hadn't shared this with them they wouldn't be particularly hurt to not be included until now──Mica might be a little hurt but more than anything they're happy you decided to share it with them at all! Always your biggest supporter and as your self imposed manager would immediately suggest booking you performances, if you wanted to perform that is.
Detective Han is a simple person, they acknowledge your talents and will praise your skill but they won't do much more than that. If you decide to share your songs with them they'll carefully pour over the lyrics to determine what you're trying to say and give you their insights honestly. If you sing them lullabies or just softly while they're attempting to sleep they might actually acknowledge the fluttering of their heart in their chest.
José is excited for you!! They would jokingly ask if they could start making merchandise for you but they might actually end up making something special just for you one night. They might just start bragging about you to their family and if you ever went 'round to their family house and see one of their younger siblings wearing a prototype design for a fake tour with your name on it... no you didn't!
It might be one of his only 'cons' but Ji Han doesn't really care all that much for music with lyrics. That's not to say he's apathetic to your singing ability or writing prowess, it's just that when he listens to music it's to wind down and think about nothing──his mind is always so busy all of the time! He would say his favourite genre is classical music and he loves a lovely soft piano so he'd bethe most receptive to songs like that, if you had any. He wouldn't refuse to listen to your songs if they had lyrics, don't get it wrong! And, like his sibling, he would try his very best to give you his best insights and opinions if you asked them of him but, like I said, he might not the be the most... engaged... out of the ROs.
Fauve might ask if she can write an article about you for her column──‘new star on the rise!’ but if you wanted to keep it personal she wouldn't push. (She might write it anyway but present it only to you... she's very good at flattery but she's very genuine in her praise of your talents!) Would offer to become your personal paparazzi, but that one is mainly a joke! (she takes the best candids of you anyway!) If she connects with a particular lyric you've written she'll find herself doodling it in all of her notebooks and journals... she might even write it on her skin at times!
With Jackson... he's trying his best but he doesn't really get writing songs. He'll listen to your songs──he's more than happy to! He just might not get them. He does know his way around the basics of a guitar though! So upon the (very big) chance than Cilly finds out about your talents and she insists on the two of you performing for her, he'll pop out the ol' guitar and join you in song. Just don't ask him to sing with you, his voice won't carry a tune no matter how hard he tries.
??? already adores you but they might fall one step deeper for you upon hearing you sing. If you perform for them they're all heart eyes! They'll feel your music with their whole body but please don't ask them about your lyrics──they can focus on your words when you sound so good singing them!

I love your art! It's so beautiful and I loved your spiritual weapons personified.
But I was curious why you picked Lan Xichen's xiao (flute) Liebing instead of his sword Shouyue (朔月 shuòyuè - new moon) ?
*whispers* I love that they are married.
Thank you! 😊💙
The reason is quite simple - I had a rough idea about personifications of most main characters' weapons/intsruments and wanted to draw them all, but in the end finished only the girls I like the most (whom I also ship hard) 😅
While I think Shouyue is a nice guy and Baxia's most likely only true friend, I have a hard time seeng them as a couple. I know it might sound weird, since for me they feel like properly fleshed out characters with their own stories and etc, and you know nothing about them, since I never really spoke about it OTL but I'll try to put it shortly, just for some extra info.
I think Baxia sees all other swords as either enemies or rivals whom she must surpass and beat in a fair fight at least once, even if they're her allies. Every time she sees another sword, her initial instinct is to fight until she beats them, and when she does, she immediately loses a great chunk of interest in them.
So here lies the dilemma: she can't love someone who has no power over her, while her pride also cannot bear anyone overpowering her.
With musical instrument it's an entirely different matter. Baxia respects them of course, but she doesn't really see them as weapons and as a result, her rivals or worthy opponents. They were not made for fighting, even if their skills can be useful in it. So she always acted somewhat indulgent and even dismissive towards them, until meeting Liebing. She was the first one to make such a weird effect on Baxia. How could such a delicate and gentle girl be also so firm and fearless? How could she accompany Baxia in her endless hunts without feeling like a burden? Not to mention only Liebing's singing can pull Baxia out of her murderous berserk mode, when she completely loses control over herself; only she can bring her the peace of mind Baxia hardly ever experienced before.
So while Liebing has that strange power over her, which Baxia can't explain in any way familiar to her, somehow she doesn't feel angered by it. More like intrigued and maybe even willing to put her endless warfare away - only for a couple of minutes, just enough to hear one more song of Liebing.

On the night of the 24th November I went at the theatre to see the show Queen at the Opera, and I was completely blown away! It's a tribute to Queen with a band, four singers + a soprano, and a small orchestra. They didn't only play some of the Greatest Hits, but also a couple of songs from Freddie's solo and a few from Barcelona (with the soprano singing Montserrat's parts), a breathtaking slow take on Hamer to Fall on It's Late's guitar base, and No one But You (me = sobbing like a baby).
I loved how the four singers (they were all so good!!!) alternated their parts, giving each their own interpretation and fully immersing in the songs, dueting and harmonising together and having so much fun on stage! The band was also INCREDIBLE and the orchestra gave a slightly original and very delightful twist to the background music. Trust me I had chills seeing real instruments playing the usually synth parts in One Vision and Innuendo, and they turned the spanish guitar solo in a fierce violin solo 😳💕💕💕
They're an Italian production but I think they tour somewhere in Europe as well? Not sure though... I know a couple of the singers were also in the musical We Will Rock You 💕 It was an incredible way to celebrate Freddie and I've had a blast 😭💜💖💕💜💕 So if you're looking for a unique and original tribute to Queen that's not a "simple" cover band I really recommend them!

Pretty Series song reviews: Get music!
Tumblr media
Song
I love this song. It might not be the most impressive thing the Pretty Series has ever put out, but, but... the instrumentals. I think that it's very well put together.
The intro with the strings and bass drum immediately creates a magnificent and invigorating feeling worthy of a character like Bell. It's so good I almost want it to be longer, but having it be any longer would just cheapen it. The instrumental part with the violin sounds elegant and evil. And the part where the theremin (?) comes in sounds really nice, too – slightly odd, but also perfectly fitting somehow, and it made me fall in love with the song even more.
Of course, with this being a relatively standard Pretty Rhythm song, the instrumentals are quite simple compared to the songs that appear in newer series. They also aren't tweaked too much to sound varied or realistic – the beat is very consistent, the violin has no traces of that signature screechy quality, etc. But honestly, the song doesn't need anything more. It's fine the way it is: an addicting pop song with a smooth quality.
Since I'm really sensitive to sounds, most songs – even songs I like – have at least one part I find irritating and just have to grit my teeth through. But Get music! has none of that. I like every single part of this song. Nothing in it hurts my ears. But it's also not boring. And that's why I ended up listening to this song on in full, on repeat, at least 7 times. (Not in a row, though.)
Vocals
I don't know why people never mention Bell when talking about Pretty Series girls with deep voices. Bell's voice is amazingly deep and mature.
Her vocals are VERY smooth, strong and stable. But they're almost too stable, to the point where they lack expression. It would've been nice if she did something expressive... singing softly for a moment, or singing something in a rough way, just anything... but she never does. Even if it's boring, it suits Bell's character as a perfectionist. She needed everything she did to be perfect, even if imperfection would be more interesting.
Lyrics
Again, they suit Bell's perfectionism very well. There's a sort of brutal sense of optimism... a sense of running down a path and refusing to ever turn back no matter how painful it is. It's very much the mindset of someone who would do anything to win.
Choreography
It's a dynamic and energetic dance that's fun to watch and looks like it would be fun to do. There are a few parts where there's a bit too much action, or the movements are too busy compared to the song, but you know, it kind of works. It's still on-beat, even if the beats aren't strong. Oh yeah, and the part where she dabs, lol. She was three whole years ahead of the trend.
Visuals
I love how the sparks fly and the camera starts moving when the beat drops. Very impactful.
Her first outfit and final outfit suit the song perfectly, but I'm not sure about her second outfit, the pink one with the hat. At the very least, it's not wildly unfitting.
My only complaint, which is a big complaint, is that they did NOT have to do that with the angles. Though I do love when she performs in her Seventh Coord and the angles stop looking creepy because the outfit design just doesn't allow it. Also, the spins looks really good in that dress.
Good points: Nice instrumentals Bad points: Vocals lack variation
Rating: I think most people would probably only say 7/10? Personal rating: 8.5/10

tal's take on sacred the thread
ok now that i've listened to sacred the song, here are my thoughts that not a single person asked for:
i figured josh was joking when he said the song was about his jumpsuits and i think to an extent it is a joke but also not entirely.
lyrics on a surface level do make it seem like the song is just about their outfits, mostly josh and danny in my opinion and i'll get back to that in a second.
if we go deeper than just what's being said, and actually put it in perspective with something they've been trying to express for a while now, to me the song is more about the freedom of individuality and self expression through their physical on stage appearance as a rock band. i mean obviously there's a huge difference between the vibe of the highway tune music video and what they were wearing and the meeting the master music video and what they've been wearing for the last two ish years, again, more specifically josh and danny.
when you think of a typical rock band, one with clear influences from past bands, you expect to see what we saw with highway tune for the most part. you don't expect skin tight velvet bodysuits covered in rhinestones, rhinestones on their faces and elaborate eye makeup, vibrant feather boas, etc. i think a lot of us just expect something similar to like guns n roses. tee shirt and jeans or leather pants (like i said, highway tune) but that's not what they do anymore.
i think the way they all dress on stage now definitely goes hand in hand with their own comfort on stage as they've grown as artists. josh, who used to look up at the ceiling when he'd sing. jake, who once wasn't able to face the crowd. sam, who was shocked to find out that people cared about the instruments he played and his own talents and skills. and daniel. my sweet, incredible daniel, who still to this day gets shit for being in the band and is seen by some as being replaceable (he isn't, obviously, but that's a topic for a different post).
now they've moved past the fear of having to prove themselves. they did the work, they put in the time and effort, they made a name for themselves, and now they're playing madison square garden. they're big, they're well known, well respected not only by us as fans but by artists that came before them. they're comfortable, and in that comfort, they've reached a period where they can dress however they want and it doesn't take away from who they are as musicians, because like i said, they've proven how good they are.
this is what i was referring to at the beginning of this post where i mentioned something they've been trying to express for a while. that being, they don't need to dress a certain way because of the music they play. they aren't any less of a rock band for wearing gemstones and glitter and makeup. rock and metal artists like mötley crüe, kiss, bowie, the new york dolls, twisted sister, poison, and ratt all wore makeup and elaborate wild outfits. it didn't take away from who they were/are as musicians, and it didn't make their music any less of the genre it was.
it all comes down to self expression and it's really lovely to see greta van fleet be another band to find the look they like. bringing something inherently feminine doesn't make them less masculine, there's a balance, and i've talked about this before.
this is also why i think i'm finding it hard to not associate josh and danny with the song the most. while each of them obviously plays a part in it - and now jake and sam have branched out with their looks and are including some makeup - josh and danny are really the ones we think about when it comes to this. josh has gone from simple stones, to more elaborate designs and now actual eye makeup (the gold on his eyes was so cool I'm obsessed with it) and danny has done the same, even getting to the point of wearing more makeup than josh until a bit recently. and we've also seen danny at least wear eyeliner when he's not on stage, just when he's out with friends which i think is really cool. all of that playing into the idea that they've found comfort in a style and a look that they didn't have or maybe didn't even consider when they first got started.
on a different note (pun perhaps intended), i don't quite see where this song falls in the general idea of continuing the story and the world building we've seen since from the fires. i'm not sure if it's even meant to, but of course, that won't be fully determined until the rest of the album is released, and once it is i fully intend to pick it apart and evaluate it not just as an individual album, but as a part of the entire discography.
anyway that was a lot and if you didn't read it i don't blame you. if you did read it feel free to talk more about it with me.

Just found this in my docs! Apparently I wrote down my reaction when I first listened to Ulysses Dies At Dawn last november, soooo :D
Started listening to Ulysses Dies at Dawn by The Mechanists. First song is The City, let's gooo (19:44).
Just finished listening to Ulysses Dies at Dawn. Oh, shit, I just realised why the album is called that, fuck. My heart. His death was simultaneously heartbreaking, peaceful, and triumphant. I had no idea it was going to end like that. Amazing (22:24).
Ok, some rambling about it before I re-listen with lyrics:
The whole idea of trials, and each character's backstory getting introduced with them is cool. It lets the mystery soak for a bit, giving breadcrumbs out, and letting each character have time to breathe.
I like how the blind guy is almost exclusively referred to as "that motherfucker" XD. Ironic.
Ok, but the sphinx disease is legitimately horrifying. Wow, the Olympians are just straight up villains in this huh.
I think Daedalus has the coolest vibes (apart from Ulysses) 'cause he's just so smooth all the time. Calm and collected and unconcerned... until the end when Ulysses switches it up on him lol.
The line "Currently beaten, battered, bloody... Unbowed. Spits out a mouthful of teeth and disdain" perfectly encapsulates Ulysses' character. I love it.
Ulysses being this super smart inventor tactician dude is awesome. I was stunned by the Trojan Horse twist. Broken Horses was amazing, I had literal chills. Interestingly, it almost reminds me of Hell’s Comin’ with Me by Poor Man’s Poison? Also, the signal Ulysses designed for the Trojan Horse sounds a lot like the V-Day signal in Kingsman. Brutal.
The beat to My Name is No-One sounds like an alarm, like how False Peace by Precious Jewel Amor utilises the prison alarm as percussion, which is very cool. And the song is hilarious. Just waltz in, it'll be fine :D Love the way it fades out after he gives his name away, ending on an unresolved note a lot like in Remember Them from EpicTM. Yo, speaking of Epic, I kinda love how the electric guitar in this song unintentionally mirrors the way Odysseus in Epic has the electric guitar as his instrument when he’s doing badass shit.
And then Ulysses going from idealistic to traumatised, and you don't even see the extent of his hope for the world until right at the end, when it's already gone. Like, shit bro.
Love how even though he spends like- almost the whole thing being drunk and getting beaten up, he still always seems in control somehow. The only time he isn't is in Underworld Blues when he's begging to Hades. I'll have to relisten to that to figure out what he wanted, actually. It was a bit unclear. Did he just... want Hades to kill him or smth? Make sure his brain wasn't on the network? Yeah, I'll need the lyrics.
The twists on all the lore are honestly so great. From mythical and magical, to futuristic and mechanical. You can clearly see the real world myths all their backstories come from.
That simple, blunt "No" from Ariadne was great.
I love how in Torn Suits all of the mercs are singing about why they can't die, and how they're going to use the money to escape the City's hold on them. By running, or paying off debts, or taking a loved one back, or ruling it. But then Ulysses kills them and willingly dies himself, giving his body to the earth and escaping the City more fully than they ever could. Hell yeah, fuck them.
As soon as I heard the password was 'Elysian', I knew it was something about death. His death. And something about it will be peaceful. I was right.
And ARGOS!! The doggo reunites with his human, and yeah he still dies, but Ulysses practically goes with him! Also, are dogs extinct in this world, like horses? Did Ulysses manage to find the last tree and the last dog?? Damn, dude. Mad skillz.
Bro, I was wondering where Penelope was going to fit into all this, 'cause in The Odyssey, practically his entire life purpose is to get back to her, but here there was... nothing stopping him I thought? I thought either he was in huge debt to someone and was stuck in a completely different sector than Penelope, or he was staying away out of guilt and shame over his actions in the war. But then it's revealed that he is trying to get back to her... in death. Like, fuck bro, that's really fucking sad. Dude's been passively or actively suicidal for the past few decades, and then he finally gets to rest with her... Fuck, man. Hits hard.
Ulysses sounds a lot like Joel from The Last of Us games when he sings softly. It helps that Elysian Fields is literally just Wayfaring Stranger lol. Also gives the same feeling as the endish part of AC: Valhalla, after he talks to the king and rides away and Twilight of the Gods starts playing.
The cover art is so cool, as well. And the last ones? The plain wooden table, bare of any media or research or advertisement. So good. No more secrets. No more lies. The truth, laid out in the open, plain as can be. Nothing more, nothing less. And then the vault, blood splattered enemies dying, grasping for artificial life in the cold grey, while Ulysses lies under the living tree, surrounded by sunlight and green with his loved ones, at peace with his death. Amazing imagery.
The drums at the end of Elysian Fields are like a funeral march or the drums that play on Anzac Day. So good.
Okay, I think I've written all I wanted to say, so imma go read the lyrics now (22:56).
Finished listening with the lyrics! Love it even more now (01:44).

An unstarted project: Rupert and the Misfits
Just a few months back, I came up with an idea for a FNAF fangame called Rupert and the Misfits. Since I lack coding ability and the money to hire a team at the moment, this game probably won't go into production for another year or two. The premise of the game is subject to change but so far it was a 14-night game, each night averaging about 7-8 minutes. The storyline follows two protagonists, Melanie (the night shift worker) and Leon (the dayshift worker) trying to piece together what's wrong with the animatronics at the restaurant while surviving their shifts.
The restaurant The Misfit's Dine & Drink is geared towards older teens and young adults. It gives them a place to be themselves and feel represented and empowered while enjoying a nice meal, entertainment, and even making a friend or two. The animatronics not only play in a band but also do interactive events such as comedy or D&D nights and when they aren't providing entertainment on stage, they're roaming around the building and interacting with patrons. They're programmed for a more mature audience and are allowed to operate with a limited set of rules as to how they should behave. However, they are always respectful to patrons unless rudeness is deserved and aren't allowed to harm patrons unless the restaurant or the animatronics themselves are in danger.
If more people show interest, I'll gladly go into more detail about how the game itself works, but for now, I'll just talk about the main animatronics! There isn't any concept art for them yet and probably won't be for a while, but I'll open up asks about the game if people are interested!
Rupert: She's a fennec fox and the main vocalist of, well, Rupert and the Misfits! They have more of a rough and self-centered personality, wanting to be the center of attention most of the time. However, they are fine with sharing the spotlight with her bandmates every once and a while. Unlike the other members of the band, she has a two-toned voice which means that when she talks normally, she can speak in both a male and female pitch. When they sing, they have the ability to sing songs that require duets all by themself. To fit with their design as a fennec fox, she has sensitive hearing that allows her to stay on pitch with the music they're singing so they're always on pitch and in tune.
Osmo: He's a raccoon and the bassist of the band and overall the most chaotic of the group. Patrons sometimes joke around saying that he lacks any common sense because there have been times where he has gotten in trouble with the staff for attempting to set things on fire just because he's bored. Much like Rupert, he is a bit rough in nature and enjoys teasing patrons or just messing around with them, but he's really a softy at heart! Despite his more rough personality, he's a gentle person in reality and knows his limits and when to leave certain patrons be.
Oswald: He's a quokka and the drummer of the band as well as the gentle giant of the group. Oswald also has the ability to play woodwind/brass instruments thanks to a tube built into his throat that can extend and blow into an instrument if needed. While most of his other bandmates are more outgoing and don't mind breaking a rule or two for the sake of having some harmless fun, Oswald is more laid back and would rather go with the flow and watch from the sidelines than engage in the shenanigans himself. Rather than causing trouble when he's not performing, Oswald prefers starting meaningful conversations with patrons, ranging from simple small talk to deep almost therapeutic conversations.
Spencer: He's a calico cat and the guitarist for the band. Like Oswald, he also has a function where he has a tube in his throat that allows him to play woodwind/brass instruments. Despite being more reserved, he's the most active with interacting with patrons and will often flirt with anyone he deems can handle it without things getting strange. The staff has specific outfits picked out for each animatronic, but Spencer often refuses to wear the outfits chosen for him and will take the more punk outfits and switch them with more feminine clothing. He's in charge of D&D nights and comedy sets and though he can often be quiet, he more than makes up for it in stage presence!

I've been really enjoying your meta on Stranger Things. And have been in denial about Eddie. So for a prompt. Eddie learning songs for Max. Or him trying to teach her favorites.
(my askbox is open for prompts tonight)
My friend, I have great news for you. I'm actually writing this long-form! Will There Also Be Singing? is one of my two current, ongoing fics, and it will heavily involve... well, this! Eddie playing for Max, Eddie teaching Max to play, Eddie and Max making up songs together, Max teaching Eddie to play her favorite song(s), while they are trapped together in the In Between awaiting rescue. If @fiore-della-valle ever catches up so I can wake Eddie up again, that is. She could use some encouragement!
To tide you over, I'll write a little extra, unrelated, just for you though. It's one of my very favorite soft things.
-----
"Yeah, yeah, you got it," Eddie says, beaming at Max even as she stops playing and blushes at the praise. "Oh, hey, I'm sorry. You were doing great! Come on, I'll play along with you this time."
Max grimaces, but she puts her fingers back into place on the neck of the guitar and her pick to the strings. Eddie's been teaching her - or trying to teach her - to play guitar for a couple of weeks now, and she's barely learned how to pick strings of notes, but for some reason tonight he's decided to teach her part of a song. He's been picking the notes slow and careful and she's been picking them after him, and it sounds a little familiar, when he does it, but she's mangled it so many times now it's like saying a word too many times. It's lost all meaning. She has no idea what they're plucking out of their instruments besides noise.
"Maybe I should stick to the simple stuff?" she suggests, not wanting to continue failing all night if she isn't even going to learn anything. If she can't even focus enough to string the notes together into a melody.
Eddie chews his lip for a second, and then shrugs. "If you want," he says slowly. "You seemed kind of bored of that."
She stares off to the side, at the little firepit he'd dug at the start of the summer, when the party had wanted to stick together like traumatized burrs. She had learned it's always like that after an Incident. Everyone gets skittish, the radios light up more often, the phone chimes constantly. People show up on doorsteps and let themselves in through any door that opens, and personal space becomes party space for a bit. Eddie's trailer - and her own for that matter - are not exactly welcoming to large groups, so he'd built a solution. He'd dug a hole and asked the group for help rolling logs over from the woods, and now they have a gathering space for roasting s'mores and huddling close under the guise of a chilly night.
And a place where she and Eddie can sit in plain view while he teaches her how to play guitar on his old acoustic. She has her own, now - everyone had chipped in on one as soon as they heard what was going on - but she likes his. It feels more like a living thing in her hands, like it had seen a lot of things, like it has a personality. Maybe hers will feel like that eventually.
"Can you, just, like, play it once?" she asks finally. "I think I'm just having a hard time going note by note because I can't... it doesn't feel like a song, and it's not straightforward like playing chords. Does that make sense?"
"Yeah, man, it makes sense," he says, and removes her guitar from his lap, holding it out to trade for his own. She trades, and settles hers beside herself instead of in her lap and smiles at how gently he curves himself around his.
He clears his throat, and glances up at her.
"It's not, uh... it's not the official music, just so you know," he says, carefully not quite meeting her eyes. "I couldn't find- I just, like, listened to it a bunch, to learn the notes. So don't be mad if it's not exactly right."
She almost asks why she would be mad, until he starts to play, and as soon as the notes are strung together properly, she gets why he didn't tell her right away. It's supposed to be a surprise. He was going to teach her the notes one by one, and watch her when she played them in order, she can see it on his face as he plays now.
She makes an unimpressed face at him, but she sings along tentatively: "Do you wanna know- know that it doesn't hurt me? Do you wanna hear about the deal I'm making?"
Eddie grins and the notes trail off as he tips his head. "Still wanna practice chords?"
She rolls her eyes and picks up her own instrument, warm from the fire, and she won't tell him that she thinks this will be a perfect first song to give the guitar its heart, but she thinks it. "Obviously not. Come on, one more time."
