why i love it: to me, this is the superbuddies fic-it’s got the perfect pacing from friends to lovers with just the right around of blurred lines between what’s normal for friends and what’s something more, and their characterizations are just *chef’s kiss* it’s also such a great take on soulmates, and it really covers the different ways people can feel about their soulmates/the concept in general

summary: Jersey, Jersey. Whispered into the warmth of their laced fingers like a prayer.

It was a stupid dream. Mikey wanted it to last.

why i love it: never has under 1.3k words made me want to cry as much as this fic has. the way talking about their dream of playing together evolved, the narrative structure that builds? absolutely hits, very good if you want to cry about the expansion draft

summary: In the history of hockey, there’s no way something like Nate suggested has never happened before and Mikey feels out of control following that thought down the rabbit hole, how he’d be powerless to stop it if it did, and that’s if he’d even want to stop it. The terrifying thing is that even though he can’t see it happening—they’re both straight, this whole fucking thing is just a thought experiment, pretend—now that Nate’s painted the picture for him, he can’t stop thinking about it—whether he’d even notice the signs until it was too late.

why i love it: i’m SUCH a sucker for fake dating aus, and this one does it so well. It really leans into the messy and complicated feelings part of fake relationships that i don’t think gets explored enough, and it handles it so, so, so well.

“You can’t just be alone,” he says and Nate lets out something that sounds like laughing.

Mikey is just trying to be helpful, and Nate is just trying to get through it.

why i love it: i really love omegaverse fics that invert the usual takes on the tropes (and this is one of them!) and it just really is a great look at their dynamic. i really like this take on mikey and nate as a whole, as well

why i love it: lots of fun bad communication between nate and mikey, and i think this one really handles the emotion of it all so well. absolutely peak idiots to lovers, and i really love that it gives us both of their point of views

summary: “It was a mistake. That’s— I didn’t mean that, and that’s it.” Mikey says, but he can’t quite meet Nate’s eyes. “That’s where I’m at, I guess.”

(or: lost gold medals, ill-advised snapchats, love confessions, meddling teammates, and a whole lot of miscommunication.)

why i love it: i just think the premise of this works so, so, so well for them-it’s another great idiots to lovers vibe for nate and mikey, and the whole concept of drunkenly telling your crush you love them via snapchap? yes, good, correct

there is a bridge over a river, and some days it is lovely by lotts

summary: “What are you doing here?” Mikey asks, trying and failing not to stare, but Nate’s staring right back, like he’s also not sure what’s going on.

“I figured I’d meet you here,” Nate says. “Put a familiar face on the Binghamton welcoming committee.”

Mikey looks around. “There’s no one else here.”

“Well, it was either a familiar face or no face,” Nate says with an uncertain smile, like he’s not quite sure he’s allowed to make a joke.

why i love it: perhaps i love it because i like to hurt my own feelings, but this is really just a well done fic that really just hits. it’s honest and emotional and you can feel the weight of that throughout it, but it does have a pretty light hearted ending that is good and hopeful. bonus points for being one of my favorite break up make up fics ever and currently my most read fic of 2021

summary: Mikey McLeod is gifted — or cursed — with the power of psychic persuasion. With the ability to bend people’s ears to his will, Mikey is well aware of how dangerous a power he wields, and the responsibility he bears to not abuse it.

Though he rarely uses his gifts, new developments in his friendship with Nate Bastian may threaten his control. Mikey would do anything to protect his best friend, including finding a way to get rid of his powers for good. Luckily, Newark’s own witch in the woods may be able to help.

why i love it: magic au!!!! i cannot stress how fantastic the world building is in this series (you don’t have to read the tknp fic that’s first to follow what’s happening, but it is worth the read) and mikey’s feelings towards nate and his own struggle is just!!!! honestly i’m just a series of exclamation points about it all

summary: Mikey has known he’s liked guys since the first time Nathan Bastian smiled at him. That’s the thing, almost everything about Mikey’s sexuality has involved Nate — which isn’t necessarily bad. In Mikey’s humble opinion, Nate is the perfect person to fall in love with. Highly recommended. Mikey doesn’t regret putting all his eggs in that basket for the last six years.

why i love it: the pining in this, the emotions of it all-just absolutely top notch all the way around, and really just what i wanted out of a superbuddies fic. it really just feels so right for nate and mikey, and i just love it

summary: When Mikey learns his roommate Nate isn't going home for Christmas, he drags Nate back home with him for break.

Or, the one where Mikey thinks all of his feelings for his roommate are platonic, and everyone laughs at him for it.

why i love it: me picking between this and hannah_baker’s other christmas centric superbuddies fic was like picking a favorite child. this is one of my all time favorite takes on mikey in any fic, and i always love a good college roommates au. just such a wonderful fic

1. Rose Petal Red by @nonchalantxfish is so fucking good, it’s an OC Weasley Slytherin HP fic that i highly suggest. i love it with all of my fucking heart. 🤩

2. anything @anapieisawesome has made tbh, but my i have a soft spot for the first story i had ever read of theirs, an OC teen wolf fanfic,  Kerosene Hearts and Matchbox Bodies which i believe is being reworked, but the original is def work the read, especially if you’ve been having a hard time trying to find an asexual character. 

3. darling, hold me in your arms (the way you did last night) is a very well written the 100 fanfic, it covers the years where the gang was separated, and well, if you're a fan of A LOT of angst, slow burns, team cockroach and surprise babies you’re in for a TREAT

4. the ice will start to break, the day will fade away is another the 100 fanfic by @birbwithlove, and it's very much recommended if you were... 🙄 dissatisfied by the way the grounders were treated in the show and also if you need a fantastic non-binary OC 

5. Rabbit of the Moon is not my usual fandom i’d read stories of, considering it’s a Sailor Moon fic, but the OC really drew me in, and it’s actually kinda fucking intense to read really enjoying reading it. such a good writer. 👌🏽

(bonus because i cannot help myself): beneath the steady waves of fearless hope and grace it’s a Vampire Diaries OC Bennett Witch story, very well written and hit all of my boxes, like, it’s so fuckin good. like their MIND.

Alex, you might be my only hope - I'm really in the mood for fealty type fan fic, do you have any recommendations? (for someone who loves astolat's works, and doesn't care for game of thrones or Sherlock) (PS I loved Conspiracy, and Be the Serpent is a delight!)

Let’s see!!! I’m assuming that you’ve already read all of astolat’s and so, therefore, have crashed your ship into the rocks of, for example, “Dangerous if Unbound”, which is The Perfect Fic.

If this is the case, then Dira Sudis is gonna be your next stop -- “You Drive Through the Dust” was our fanfic tentpole for the Serpentcast fealty episode, if I recall correctly, and it has some very excellent fealty themes. I’d also highly recommend her The World That You Need series, in the Vorkosigan fandom. The first three are sorta short prequels/setup for “Everything That You Can Keep” which is where things start really popping off, as it were, and you can read them or not depending on how urgently you need to get to the fealty bits. Speaking of Vorkosigan, lightgetsin and sahiya wrote “A Deeper Season” which we tentpoled on the latest Serpentcast episode, ALSO fantastic, ALSO some good fealty shit, though because the two central parties are so relatively close in rank and also in familiarity, it doesn’t go as hard on the fealty as it COULD. But it’s there and it’s fuckin great.

Darling love, we must turn briefly to pro fic, because if you have not read THE GOBLIN EMPEROR by Katherine Addison you need to go immediately to remedy that situation. If you have (with the wisdom like the sages of old) already read THE GOBLIN EMPEROR, then I would suggest that you sally forth and binge the whole TGE fanfic listing on AO3, it’ll cure what ails ya

Also I would love to be able to say “Actually I’ve got this new book which would be ACTUALLY PERFECT for you” because it would -- it’s deliberately written for FEALTY YAY and it is about an Exquisitely Beautiful Prince falling in love with his Grouchy Stoic Devoted Bodyguard, for all the people who read The Goblin Emperor and said “This is nearly perfect but it needs MORE KISSING”, but unfortunately I haven’t sold that manuscript yet yet soooo... apologies there LOL. XD I’m posting a few snips of it to my Patreon recently, though.

I am feeling so lucky and grateful and promising. the end of the year was bumpy, with a really surprising Resurgence of the ol’ depression that sent me rushing to the mental health unit at the hospital and leaving with a flurry of appointments and adjustments. it’s better now. I was cognizant enough to know I needed help, and reached out to it.

I have things to look forward to in 2019, and know good things I am not expecting will happen as well. and that, I think, is the best we can hope for. <3

you are so flippin sweet ahhhh 💖jeez i dont think either of us are ever gonna quite be able to comprehend this outpouring of love over the fic, you guys have literally made these last couple of weeks probably the best of this entire year. 

THANK U SO MUCH FOR SAYING SPECIFICALLY WHAT U LIKED it’s so cool to see what captures people’s attention the most and whether it’s the stuff we worked hard on or the stuff that came a bit easier. we put soooo much time into the characterisation and the character histories so i’m so glad it was something that caught your eye. 

as for recs! pretty much all of this are au’s bc i feel like multi chapter canon fics are hard to come by, but if you’re reading the hsau you probably dont have a problem with that!

first, literally anything @directoravasharpe has written i will recommend so fuckin highly, her mr & mrs smith au and then her sort of swan queen au is just. wow. flawless. brilliant. amazing. unreal. 

also @ilovemyships has an american ninja warrior au which is SO good, i know nothing about that competition so i was like Wow this sounds Wild but the slow burn was fantastic 

the only other avalance multichapt au is the actually unreal and so so fuckin brilliant soccer au by @quacktracks i’ve been reading it for months now and it is still one of my favourite stories, the angst is Prime and the enemies to friends to (not quite yet) lovers is just done so well and the slow burn continues to kill me which i guess is a taste of my own medicine. also as it turns out we both simultaneously ended up giving ava a sister called ali which i find kind of hilarious

And, unlike me, they take requests! I’ve had a couple people ask me if I take requests. At this point, I don’t, and I’m not sure if I ever will. Outside of special occasions (or finishing my Piotr fic series, which’ll probably take at least a year), it’s not something I can see myself doing. I get very attached to ideas and tend to covet them closely, which ultimately doesn’t work well with doing requests (that and I don’t struggle with writing of my own volition).

Sunlight dapples the bright green undergrowth of the woods behind the X-Mansion. Birds chirp overhead, their merry sounding songs echoing up to the bright, flawless blue sky. Bees occasionally buzz past, in search of the next patch of cutely colored flowers.

It’s a picturesque day.

You, however, are not.

You’re absolutely drenched in sweat, slick and shiny with it as you jog on a well worn path in the woods. Your shirt and gym shorts cling to your body, darkened with your excess perspiration. Your hair is equal parts limp and frizzy, and the strands that have fallen out of your haphazard pony tail --tied during the ugly hours of the morning when you’d first woken up to start your work out--are plastered against your forehead or your neck. Your knees are smudged with dirt from where you tripped earlier --along with your hands--and you just generally look like a mess.

A happy mess, though. A well-exercised mess. This run has been a part of your daily routine for several months now, and you’ve built enough endurance to go the whole distance without stopping or passing out!

You are, however, realizing that you might need to get up earlier if you want to avoid the sweltering summer temperatures and the corresponding sweat bath. You’re not sure which is more disgusting --being so sweaty that people can see their reflections when they look at your skin, or getting up early.

You’re pretty sure it’s getting up early. Probably.

As you jog through the gardens and towards the back of the mansion, you spy Piotr sitting out by the back door in his human form, presumably waiting for you.

Part of it is elating --because just last night he confessed he was in love with you and borderline made out with you on a secluded bench behind a tree, and you’re always happy to see him--but part of it is groan worthy --because just last night he confessed he was in love with you and borderline made out with you on a secluded bench behind a tree, and right now you look absolutely awful.

You slow to a stop a few feet away from him and spread your arms wide, as if waiting for applause before taking a bow. “Behold me and all my drippy glory!”

Piotr chuckles as you flop onto the ground. “You look fine, myshka. I take it your run went well?”

“Yeah, it’s fine, but it’s so damn hot.” You sit up and grimace when you try --and fail--to wipe stray blades of grass off your arms.

“Perhaps you should start waking up earlier.” He’s frowning now, concerned. “It is not good to run in this heat. You could make yourself sick.”

“Okay, I know you’re just trying to help me be healthy, but you should know that suggesting waking up anytime before eight is treason.”

He smiles fondly and shakes his head. “Will you listen if I offer something in return?”

“Absolutely. Even if it’s just you taking your shirt off. Especially if it’s you taking your shirt off. Can you tell I have a vested interest in seeing you with your shirt off?”

His cheeks flush red, but he laughs anyway as he holds out a water bottle to you. “I thought you would be thirsty, since you usually don’t take drink with you. Which--”

“Yeah, yeah, I know. Not healthy.” You groan as you press the cool plastic against your hot skin, then take a few icy sips and sigh contentedly. “You’re a real prince among men. You know that, Piotr?”

“Last I checked, it’s called being nice.”

“Pretty sure you’re just an alien that thrives off being courteous.”

He raises an eyebrow at you and smirks. “So, I am alien Prince?”

“I don’t see why not. You’ve got manners and can morph into a massive metal version of yourself. Pretty fuckin’ weird, if you ask me.” You guzzle a little more water, then groan as you push yourself into a standing position. “You’re dressed casual today. Is school not in?”

“Nyet. We are out for year.”

Right. You knew that. Duh.

Your brain does the math of it’s own volition. 

The students and most of the teachers are out for the day and won’t be back until late evening. Those who’ve stayed behind will likely spend the day doing what they want. And, as if that wasn’t wonderful enough, Wade and Nathan are out of the house on a job for Weasel. 

You smile as an idea comes together in your head. “Are there any missions you have to go on.”

Piotr shakes his head. “Nyet.”

“Do you have any hard set plans for the day?”

He’s smiling now, catching on to what’re you’re getting at. “I do not.”

“Then, what say you and I spend the day together once I’m done showering? I’m thinking marathon movie session.”

“I think I would enjoy that very much.” He opens the back door for you and ushers you inside. “But you really should take water with you on runs, moya lyubov’. Dehydration is no joking matter.”

You hide your fond smile by lifting the spout of the water bottle to your lips and let your mother-hen boyfriend lecture you about proper athletic safety and the importance of being well hydrated.

God, you love this man.

Once you’ve thoroughly scrubbed yourself and put on some dry clothes that don’t reek of sweat, you pop downstairs in search of Piotr.

He’s in the kitchen, making an early lunch for himself. “Have you eaten yet, myshka?”

“No. I prefer doing fasted workouts. You build more muscle that way.”

“Da, but you should eat something. You have burnt great deal of energy.”

“I’m going to.” You pat his arm reassuringly. “You don’t have to worry, okay? Believe me, I’m starving. There’s no way I’m going any longer without eating than I absolutely have to.”

The line of his shoulders relaxes as he exhales. “Sorry, I--”

“Don’t apologize, Pete. I like the way you’re sweet and want to take care of everyone; it’s endearing.” Then, to prove your point, you clamber up onto the stool next to him and kiss him.

Even though most of you is completely swept away by the sheer sensation of his lips pressing against yours, a tiny part of your brain still registers ‘holy fucking shit, I’m kissing Piotr, I’m his girlfriend now, I can kiss him whenever I want, this is so fucking awesome--’

He breaks the kiss with a smile and rubs the swells of your cheeks with his thumbs. “I don’t think I’m ever going to get enough of that.”

You grin and lean back in for another kiss. “Me either.”

He presses a gentle finger against your lips. “Eat something, please, dorogaya moya.”

You kiss the pad of his finger and hop off the stool. “Fine. If you insist. So, what movies are we watching?”

“I thought I would let you choose. I put my DVD binder on table in rec room.”

You stealthily lift a pack of Pop Tarts out of one of the boxes Wade has stashed on top of the fridge, then use Piotr’s meal prep distraction to slip into the rec room with your hard earned treat in hand. You situate yourself on the couch, open the foil wrapper holding the breakfast pastry as quietly as you can, and shove half a Pop Tart in your mouth while you start flipping through the DVD booklet.

The sheer number of choices is overwhelming. You wouldn’t have pegged your boyfriend as a movie junkie. The case contains a little bit of everything, from some discs with titles in Russian --no surprise there--to cheesy rom coms to several pieces by Alfred Hitchcock.

What is surprising, though, is when you spy Disney’s Peter Pan movie at the bottom right corner of one of the ‘pages.’ After staring at it for a moment, wondering why Piotr would have a kid’s movie, you shrug it off and flip over to the other side. He’s a teacher. Of course he’d have a kid’s movie or two.

Except it isn’t just one or two. Peter Pan is just the tip of the iceberg; a few quick, disbelieving flips to the end of the binder confirms that he has every Disney movie released on DVD, from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to Moana.

Woah. Did not see this coming.

“Pop Tarts are not a meal, dorogaya moya.”

“Agree to disagree.” You look up at him as he walks into the rec room with two plates of food. “Hey, why do you have so many Disney movies?”

“They are happy movies,” he says as he sets one of the plates in your lap. “Besides, I like the art and animation.”

“I’ve never seen ‘em. What makes them so great?”

“Well, the older ones were done by hand. Artists made backgrounds, then painted animation cels for each frame. The cels were photographed, then put together into full movie. It is...” His voice trails off as he tries to find the words. “Awe-inspiring, as artist, to watch. Compared to modern standards, the movies are arguably crude, but the amount of effort is... amazing. And I think the old movies are beautiful in ways that new movies aren’t. The texturing of the backgrounds, the softness... it is incredible.”

“Wow. That is cool. What about the newer ones?”

“Computer animation is fascinating. I doubt it will ever be ‘my thing’ but it is still interesting to watch. Plus, stories and plots are better written. Usually.”

“Always a good thing.” You shove the last Pop Tart half into your mouth and shrug. “Disney’s good. You pick where we start.”

“We start at beginning,” he says emphatically as he carries the DVD carrier over to the entertainment center.

You look down at the plate as he sets everything up and gasp when you realize it has a neat little pile of Cheetos on it. “Wait, is this for me?”

“Da. I told you Pop Tarts were not meal.”

“Man, I scored a total package. How did that even happen?”

He blushes as he stands and walks over to the couch. “I think am I the one who ‘scored,’ myshka.”

You smile and sigh happily when he presses his lips against yours.

There’s no way life gets any better than this.

Life, in fact, does get better.

Namely, in the sense that you get to spend the whole day watching Disney movies with your boyfriend.

And in the sense that, if prompted, Piotr will literally spend several minutes explaining the behind the scenes effort that went into the animating the old movies, the techniques used by the artists to construct the backgrounds, and the sheer level of talent it takes to sync audio to hand-fucking-painted animation.

That, and the movies are just that gorgeous. Granted, the writing in the newer ones are usually better --the two of you opt to hop back and forth between old and new since there’s no way you’ll make it through every single Disney movie in one day--but the level of artistry in all of them leaves you absolutely speechless.

“Man, I’ve really been missing out!” you murmur, awestruck, as you watch the ‘Whole New World’ sequence in Aladdin. “This is amazing! How did they even do this?”

“Much of animation was done on computers at this point,” Piotr says. “It allows for art to move better with music, more creative freedom.”

“No kidding.” You can’t help but smile as you watch the magic carpet soar up into the clouds as the music swells. “This is really beautiful.”

“Da,” Piotr agrees softly.

And then he shifts closer to you, stretches his arms above his head, and lets one settle around your shoulders as he relaxes again.

Suddenly, your proximity to your boyfriend is a lot more interesting than the movie. You’re tucked against his side, sitting thigh to thigh, and his arm is warm and comfortably heavy on your shoulder.

You’re hit by a desire to kiss him --and it suddenly occurs to you that there’s nothing stopping you. The two of you are in a relationship, there’s no one around that would make doing it ‘inappropriate,’ and you’re practically on a quasi-date. There’s never been a better time for it.

You wriggle into his lap until you’re straddling him, propped up on your knees --he’s so much taller than you that at times it’s almost ridiculous--and loop your arms around his next before leaning into kiss him.

Piotr’s hands flit up and down your arms, your shoulders, and your sides before settling at your waist. He uses his hold on you to pull you close, bringing the two of you flush together.

You let out a happy sigh when he wraps his muscular arms around you, effectively cradling you against his burly chest, and kiss him harder. You’ve been pining for him for so long, and now that the two of you are together you never want to stop kissing him. Touching him. Being around him.

“Is this your way of saying that you don’t want to watch movie anymore?” Piotr asks, a little breathless, when the kiss breaks.

“No,” you murmur as you kiss the bridge of his nose. “I just love you.”

His cheeks flush a lovely shade of rose as he smiles sweetly at you. “I love you too, myshka.”

You turn around and settle in his lap to finish watching the movie, snuggled happily in his arms.

This. Life definitely doesn’t get better than this.

Except it does. The universe is hellbent on proving you wrong today, and you’re loving every moment of it.

Once the film finishes, Piotr suggests that the two of you take a stroll through the gardens to get your blood flowing.

The carefully arranged and tended to patches of flowers and bushes look utterly wonderful in the golden, early evening light. A soft breeze stirs the late spring air, keeping everything perfectly comfortable as the two of you walk along the gravel pathways.

Piotr’s hand in solid and warm around yours, and you never expected such a small, simple form of contact to feel so exhilarating. You almost can’t believe that it’s real, that he’s really your boyfriend now and really loves you.

The two of you talk about whatever comes to mind --mostly the movies you’ve been watching--and take your time as you meander around the grounds of Xavier’s. There’s no reason to hurry; the students and teachers won’t be back from their beach trip for a few more hours, there aren’t any missions that need responding to, and with Wade out of the house on one of his jobs there aren’t any explosions or other disasters to shatter the easy, peaceful lull in the air.

“I’ve really enjoyed today,” you say quietly as you squeeze Piotr’s hand.

“So have I, dorogaya moya. This has been... wonderful.” He stops --slowly enough that you don’t stumble or jerk back--and bends down to kiss you.

You smile into the kiss, and rest one hand on his chest and the other on his cheek.

It’s absolutely magical. Maybe the Disney movies have been rubbing off on your life.

“Think we have time for one more movie?” you ask when he pulls back.

“I think so,” he says with a soft, happy smile.

“Cool.” You grin giddily as you walk back to the house, hand in hand, the promise of more quiet, intimate, magic-filled time together beckoning alluringly.

This. Life doesn’t get better than this.

Spoilers ahead! Here we have a Claire x Kaia fic that’s nothing but soft and sweet and beautiful. Saxxy highlights an almost vulnerable side of Claire that was incredibly refreshing to read. I got the shippy vibes watching their episode and this fic is a really good intersect between fanfic and actual canon because the way it’s written is so believable for both characters. It feels natural and makes sense with who they are, how they feel, and how they’d react to each other if the show had actually put them into this situation. Super lovely and really short for those not sure they’re into this ship, yet. - "

This story is a great example of a few things. It takes the unfair, misogynistic, sexist world that we live in and simplifies it down into an example that, sadly, I’m sure many young girls experience on the daily. It sucks, but Erin did a great job making that idea into something small we can focus on. This fic is very simple in the way of writing, but it’s a beautiful balance for the heavy tone and sullen idea discussed within it. Erin also highlights and beautifully displays the grace, intuition, patience, and strength Danneel has as a mother/woman/person, and I just strongly rec this one to every member of the SPN Family. - Mana

Gypsy Girl (series) by @wi-deangirl77

This story had me hooked within 30 seconds. I’m not as likely to read a Sam centric fic as I am a Dean centric fic but the summary intrigued me. The originality of the story line, of the characters was so creative and unlike anything I’ve read before. By the time I got to the third paragraph I was a goner, completely hooked. And by the time I got through chapter 1, Sam had me wrapped around his finger and I wasn’t about to let go.  This story is full of highs and lows, that are beautifully written. It’s a roller-coaster of the best kind and I highly recommend you check it out. - @babypieandwhiskey

Forgive Me, Father - this fic. THIS FIC. I have no words. It’s pure smutty goodness, with Virgin!Priest!Sam who’s so cute I could cry.

Cursed - If you’ve been following me for a while, you’ll know I thrive on Dom!Sam. I love the idea of a giant man without much control in his daily life taking complete control during sex. But this fic is just one more reason why I’m now so partial so a more submissive version of my favorite moose. The imagery of Sam begging for Dean is too much to handle.

Both - This fic is the poly ship I didn’t know I needed. The idea of Dean getting both of the people he loves it so satisfying.

Release and Relief - I was trying to limit this to three fics per author, but this one cannot be left out. I’ve been shipping Sam/Rowena for a while, but Dean/Rowena is just so good and I’m always a slut for a sub!Dean. Read all the parts. You will not regret it.

Kitten’s fics were kinda my gateway into the world of smut and reader-inserts, and she definitely inspired me to start this blog! Kitten never ceases to amaze me. I adore everything she writes, so it was really hard to pick just a few fics:

Spin Cycle - It’s hard to chose just one of Kitten’s John x Reader fics, but this is definitely in my top three. It’s got all the good stuff- a damsel in distress, Handyman!John to the rescue, cheesy flirting, and filthy smut.

Substitution - If you have a thing for sex worker!Dean and jealous!Sam (like me), this is the Wincest fic for you. Kitten doesn’t usually (read: ever) write bottom!Dean, but she did such a good job and I still love it (clearly).

Come as You Are - Fluff and smut and enough angst to have you yelling at your phone screen cos WHY WON’T THEY JUST TALK. Also, tattooed!punk!Dean. What more do you need?

Breakdown - Sometimes Kitten’s premises read like the beginning of a porno and this is definitely one of those, and i absolutely love every word of it. Makes me wish my car would break down in the middle of nowhere just so I could run into a tall, gorgeous farmer names Sam. Please and thank you.

Tails of a Demi-Demon and His Doms - I was a little hesitant going into this fic, but I’m not entirely sure why? Cos it’s got everything I love- Wincestiel, sub!Dean, some lovely kinks I’d forgotten I have. It’s a little on the longer side, but well worth the time.

Four’s Company - I’m a sucker for a good fix-it and while I did enjoy Season 12, I was bummed to see so many amazing characters go in the finale. Luckily, when I get sad, I can just reread this amazing series and pretend Dean got banged in the Bunker bathroom by Ketch and everyone is still alive.

The Scars We Leave - Speaking of kinks I didn’t know I had and pairings I didn’t know I shipped. This fic is not for the faint of heart, but if you like Demon!Dean x Crowley, Sub!Dean, predicament bondage (specifically my favorite kind and a position I’ve put Dean in before, because he’s so much fun to torture), and some pain kink, this is the fic for you. It’s filthy and dark and oh so good.

If you’ve been following me for any amount of time, you probably know of my adoration for anything Leo writes. His depth of understanding of the characters and the way he can paint a picture with his words just never ceases to blow my mind. I highly recommend reading everything on his AO3, but here are a few of my favorites (and they’re not all SPN fics!):

Soft: A Story - This fics is so sweet and cute, but also angsty and deep and thought-provoking. It was written for Nanowrimo, so it’s really long, but it’s honestly just amazing. Little Dean is so stinkin’ cute and Sam’s trying to hard to be a good big brother after being the little brother his whole life, and I just love every moment of it.

A Bark With A Bow - this fic was actually written for me, for a Christmas exchange in 2016, and it’s perfection. I’ve always said Sam needs a dog, particularly a therapy dog, and Leo delivered in the most splendid fashion, complete with brothers being cute brothers. It’s a Christmas fic, but I read it all year round.

Gibralter - I DON’T EVEN PLAY THIS DAMN GAME. All I’ve done is watch some of the videos and read this fic. Multiple times. It’s so damn good. Forever long, but so intriguing. I’m a sucker for brother dynamics (have you seen my favorite show??), and this has all of that, with a fantastic blend of lack-of-communication, beautifully written trauma, bottled up emotions, and some action to spice things up a little. I love it so much.

Comment: GOLD. SUDDEN GOD HOLY SHIT THIS WAS GREAT AND AN ABSOLUTE DELIGHT TO FIND. ACTORS AU AND FAKE DATING AU, BUT NOT IN THE USUAL FAKE DATING SENSE THAT YOU EXPECT FROM ACTOR AUS. 10/10 RECOMMEND IT’S OFF TO A GREAT START I HAVE BEEN EXCITED TO REC THIS ONE EVER SINCE I READ IT TWO DAYS AGO

Addition: okay so, I love actor aus and I love fake dating aus, and while together they’re somewhat common, this one has a different take that’s incredibly refreshing and just overall great. The existing relationship between Victor and Yuuri is fabulous, and just — I wholly endorse this. Even though it’s only in its beginning I have really high expectations for it. 

2. The nostalgic feeling of the familiar by myoue || Rated G, 19k (WIP)

Yuuri’s the one who suggested being fake engaged in the first place, tugging Victor along on such a convoluted plan at the start of cherry blossom season.

“So, I brought him as promised. My boyfriend.”

Victor’s hand jerks. “What?”

“My fiancé, actually,” Yuuri talks swiftly over him.

Victor’s hand jerks again, nearly spilling tea over the sides of his cup.

Comment: This??? This fic is like??? Finding a sudden treasure in the middle of the fucking desert??? It’s so good??? I did not expect to suddenly find such a good fake relationship fic in the middle of Hell Month??? It’s contemplative and touching and quiet, and it looks fantastic so far.

HIGHLY recommend, like goddamn.

Addition: contemplative and touching and quiet indeed, this fic has a certain tone that takes your breath away. Victor’s perspective in this, being unable to entirely understand Yuuri, is such a great thing in how he’s confused but also surprised but also delighted. This too, is off a good beginning. Also, fake engagement trope? hell yeah. 

3. Yuuri Enchanted by the__magpie || Rated T, 57.8k

At birth, Yuuri Katsuki was given the gift of obedience, although he quickly learns as he grows up that it is a curse. He has to obey any command given to him, even if it puts him or others in danger. Too afraid to face the terrifying outside world, Yuuri stays in his home town of Hasetsu, until a chance encounter with Prince Victor urges him to venture outside of his safe bubble. Determined to break his curse, Yuuri begins on an adventure involving fairies, ogres, true love, and courage he never knew he had.

Comment: I’ve recced this before, but it’s finally completed, so it earns another rec! It was an enjoyable read all the way through, and while I did scream in frustration a little at Yuuri, I really do love this fic and the way it ended. A really good read for anyone that likes fairytale-esque fics.

Addition: While I wasn’t familiar with the souce material, and waas taken off-guard at times, this fic was a fun ride all the way. Victor and Yuuri are terribly cute in this, and Yuuri’s determination is a wonderful thing, even if he does some stupid things occasionally. But overall it’s just... a really solid fic, and I’m very happy to have read it to the end. 

4. The Ties That Bind by QueBae   |   Rated T, 31.8k (WIP)

Summary: The first time Viktor saw Yuri Plisetsky was by pure chance at a private rink in Moscow, skating for his dedushka. He thought they would never meet again but it seemed he was lucky in life.

“Papochka!” Yuri called out and Viktor swore his heart stopped beating. Yuri hadn’t addressed him as atsets, heck, he didn’t even call him papa! Yuri said papochka. Papochka! It was a more affectionate, almost cutesy way of calling your papa and it was quickly turning to be Viktor’s favourite word. Did Yuri know that Viktor was somehow his father?

Then Yuri started dashing towards Viktor and all his earlier doubts regarding Yuri had been wiped clean from his mind. Viktor immediately darted off and all that was running through his mind at the time was Yuri, Yuri, my son, Yuri! Viktor had waited to hold this boy in his arms, wanting to tell him how proud he was and how much he had grown. Viktor decided he didn’t want to waste any more time being separated from his Yuri.

His little boy, Yuri.

Or the single dad feat. ballet AU I’ve always wanted to write that no one asked for.

Comment: I fuckin love this fic. The summary is deceiving, but in the best way possible. Victor is so very over his head that it’s obvious, and little child Yuri is a great mix of spitfire and cute that other fics don’t balance out well. Yuuri as a character interests me as well, and the latest update was just so sickeningly cute ugh *clutches chest*

Addition: I live for fics that have a parental relationship, not just focusing on the vicyuu. Victor in this is wonderfully lovestruck, Yuuri is a wonderful parent, and Yuri is portrayed in a way that fits with the behavior of a child but still, at the essence, has the characteristics of the canon Yuri we know and love. I tremendously recommend this. （。＞ω＜）。

5. Once You Go Greek by Defiant-Dreams (baterina_1234) || Rated M, 39.3k 

Even when Viktor was still rushing, he already knew that one day, he was going to be the president of Mu Sigma Delta. Here are three things Viktor’s learned from Mu:

1) Go for what you want.

2) Make use of what you have.

3) Everyone in Alpha Kappa Omega is an asshole.

But then Viktor meets Yuuri Katsuki and he finds that he’s no longer sure what he wants anymore.

Or:

a fraternity fic where Yuuri and Viktor are in rival frats, but they fall in love anyway.

Addition: now a complete fic, it was very very cute, with appropriate amounts of drama and a dynamic that worked out wonderfully. My emotions ranged from ??? to ?!?!?! to !!! and there are really no words to describe this accurate. But it was fun, and has a lot of value as something to reread because of the sheer amount of amusement you get from this. The author also does really well with portraying sexual tension between Victor and Yuuri (lol) and tied together with the fraternity setting, it’s delicious. 

6. next to you, i still dream by shamusiel || Rated E, 51.2k (WIP)

They had said that, like humans, the eyes of a dragon could be a window into the soul. Every emotion laid bare to the world. It was just rare that any man lived long enough to properly look.

After dragons were slaughtered and driven out by humanity, the ones that remain were scarcely seen again.

Yuuri is a dragon, Viktor is a human prince.

Comment: I’ve been following this since chapter one, and I really like it! their relationship in the beginning is really nice/pretty organic, and I look forward to how the story continues on. Worldbuilding is also quite nice.

Addition: The dynamic between Victor and Yuuri is something wonderful. I want them to live long and happily together, despite their differences. This story has a wonderful fairytale-esque mood to it. The execution to this classic conceit is a delight, and every update has me smiling and excited for more. 

7. Beautiful by ipona || Rated E, 11.5k

Yuuri Katsuki lives in the same apartment building as The Most Beautiful Man in the World, but somehow he only manages to run into him when he’s a complete mess.

AU where they’re not ice skaters, basically just a story of Yuuri and Viktor falling in love.

Comment: afjdsa;alkjfsadljfdksal; CUTE. SO CUTE. SUPER CUTE. A DELIGHT TO READ.

Addition: honestly, there’s not much to say about this other than it’s just so goddamn cute. There are like, three versions of this AU for yoi already, and I love all of them, and they’re all cute, but each of them are unique to the author and I think that ipona has just. Ipona’s take on it is tremendously cute.

8. Nocturne by Nostalgia-in-Starlight (UniverseEndingParadox) || Rated M, 11.2k

It’s a charmed life, rife with luxury and glamour and a doting husband who gives him the world on a silver platter. But it’s also a peculiarly lonely life, being married to the underboss of one of the biggest ‘yakuza’ in operation. Victor wouldn’t trade it - or his husband - for any other world.

Or.

A day in the life of Mafia Wife!Victor.

Comment: Oh heck yes. This is just *clenches fist* this has so many little things that I enjoy the heck out of. It’s short but I really really look forward to the next chapter. The obvious affection they have for each other is like, everything I love in Mafia AUs.

Addition: it is now a completed fic! The relationship between Yuuri and Victor is just delicious. You can tell how much they love each other, despite their unusual circumstances. I would love to read more of this verse, but the moment that the author has chosen to write about their relationship has gotten my heart wishing for their happiness.

9. tu oublieras mon nom by aquamarine_nebula || Rated M, 3.4k (WIP)

Viktor gave him a megawatt smile. “You look lovely today, Yuuri,” he said, his voice lowering, head cocking a bit to one side. “What brings you here?”

He could have taken his every movement from a point-to-point guide on flirting, let alone the actual words, and Yuuri knew this because of the intense training he’d had to carry out on understanding body language. Unfortunately, he hadn’t been trained on how to deal with Viktor Nikiforov flirting with him.

“I hired him,” Mr Giacometti said.

Viktor blinked.

“As my bodyguard,” Mr Giacometti continued.

Yuuri gets a job done, fulfils a long-time dream, and probably begins falling in love in the process.

Comment: Oh. My. God. This is the unexpected gold I found today, super duper recommend. It’s off of a really curious beginning and I’m just??? I’m bouncing with excitement at how it can possibly continue. If you read one of the fics on this list tonight, make it this one.

Comment: *YELLS FROM THE TOP OF A SKYSCRAPER* I love fantasy and worldbuilding and this fic starts off with great worldbuilding. The first chapter begins with Yuuri’s beginnings, and introduces us to the setting, and the narration does wonderfully in giving information in a way that it’s never infodump. We’re also given glimpses at other characters too, and Yuuri’s personality is distinctly shaped during the childhood that the first chapter tells. Plus there’s already foreshadowing of future events/goals/dreams of Yuuri, and basically if you like fantasy/magic aus with solid worldbuilding, read iiiiiit.

Addition: honestly, I think this is still one of the best fantasy fics with worldbuilding I’ve read. Even though it’s only one chapter so far, it’s an amazing first chapter, and I have really high expectations of it.

Hello love 💜 Ahahahahaha dO i kNoW aNy GooD hOo fAnFiC?!?! (picture that with the spongebob meme lol)I laugh because have like a 10 page word document dedicated to good PJO fanfic. That fandom is my home and the reason I read fanfic, and the first ever fic I posted was a angsty Jasabeth/Percabeth fanfic, so yeah, you could say I’m pretty knowledgeable on the subject lol 😂 I don’t actually ship Frazel and Caleo very hard? But I have loads and loads of Percabeth recs and some pretty good Jasper recs so get ready 😎Below is a list of my favorite and highly recommended pjo fanfic authors in alphabetical order, because I love them all relatively equally. Their names are links to their masterlists (for the most part) and their descriptions include what they usually write, and personal faves of mine. If you check their tags, chances are they’ve written Caleo or Frazel at one point or another. Here we go!1) ananbeth (Hannah) is AMAZING and I love her and I recommend everything she has ever written. The first link is to her masterpost, and the second is to her general pjo fic tag because she I don’t think she’d updated the masterpost in a while. My favorites are probably the Wimbledon AU that she’s working on right now with Sophii, which Grover, Jason, Piper, Reyna, Sally, and Paul are present in. Lips Like Sugar is also really good, as well is the rest of that series, and that’s all fluffy Percabeth kisses. She mostly writes a lot of Percabeth, and Jasper are usually dating in the background of her fics. Both of those I have just listed are Percabeth.2) bananannabeth (Ashlee) is a ray of sunshine and happiness, and is single-handedly responsible for two of my all time favorite pjo fics, and I love her. I’m trash for the skater!percy AU, and Ashlee wrote my favorite interpretation of that - Skateboards and Snapbacks; Rachel, Piper, Jason, Grover, Frank, Hazel, and Leo do show up, but they’re not big characters, as it is a Percabeth fic. She’s also responsible for a fantastic fwb AU, also known as the Brunch AU (found towards the bottom, in the smut category of her masterpost), which Jasper are pretty present in, although it is one again a Percabeth fic. She also has a few small Frazel and Jasper pieces, and a lot of angst if you’re into that. Here is her general writing tag.

3) blackjacktheboss (Sophii) is a goddess. An actual real live goddess. I fuckin love Sophii. She doesn’t write very much fic, she usually goes for long lists of headcanons, but even still she builds absolutely gorgeous AUs, and I scroll through her tags for hours, and I love her so much. She’s responsible for one of my favorite AUs ever, the Ichor Group AU, which is a brilliant concept, and the first thing she ever wrote for it was actually Tratie smut lol. I linked the last page of her tag, so that you can read in order :) She’s also a massive Tratie (Travis Stoll and Katie Gardner) fan, and has converted me into Tratie trash as well, so I recommend that tag a lot. Other than that, she’s got all sorts of AUs and headcanons and wonderful edits on just about everyone, so I recommend poking around :)4) greenconverses (Jess) is the reason I started reading fic ever in the first place. I love and worship Jess. She’s just ... wow. Jess is a queen, basically. I have no words for how much I love Jess, so every time I try to explain it it’s underwhelming but I just love her so much. Right now she’s got a killer Roman!Percy AU going, which is amazing, and!! some Caleo!! (that I haven’t read but will vouch for because it’s Jess), and some great Jasper/Percabeth as spies, and she wrote one of my favorite teacher AUs ever but I can’t find it 😩 but if you poke around, it’s there, and it’s amazing.5) ignitesthestars (Hannah) is fucking amazing in every single way, she is so fuckign spectacular, and wonderful and just. She is just. Wow. Right now she’s writing a fucking amazing fic that I am embarrassed to say I am super into, because it’s lukeabeth, and she goes so far as to call it the tire fire au, and I’m so upsettingly into it because her writing is THAT good (the first link is part 1 the second is part 2). This is her general fic tag because her masterpost hasn’t been updated in a while. This is one of my favorite pieces by her because um yum but also wow, and here is her analysis of it. 

6) son-of-rome (Dan) is the self-proclaimed Angst Lord and absolutely fantastic and I love him. He also has an extreme love of Jasper, so if you’re ever in need of Jasper, he’s your guy. Also if you’re ever in need of aggressive sobbing due to immense angst and pain, he’s good for that too. He’s also really funny and secretly a softie and all-around wonderful. This is one of my favorite fics (Percabeth) but also it made me sob so so so much, so like, read it with a grain of salt... honestly, I recommend just going through Dan’s fic tag for hours because that’s what I did and I mean it’s very depressing but also he’s an amazing story teller and you can’t go wrong :) He also has a fantastic non-angsty rendition of the skater!percy au that I can’t find right now because his blog isn’t super organized but, it’s there somewhere!

All of those amazing writers also have great fic rec tags (except for Dan, whose tag is just fic) which are really really helpful. But just off the top of my head, other great writers include percyyoulittleshit, suchastart, romanitas, rongasm, flyingcrowbar, and many many others I can’t think of off of the top of my head. So yeah, check those out, and if  you want more, let me know, because I definitely got ‘em, lol

final fantasy?

This really depends on which Final Fantasy we’re talking about, haha, because my opinion varies a lot!

Overall:

Nah | haven’t seen yet | didn’t like/gave up | like it | love it | highly recommend.

a reason why: I don’t have a clear reason why aside from “most of the games were on Playstation systems when I was a kid, and I didn’t have ready access to them.” That’s a slight lie; I had a PS One as a kid, that I used primarily as a Spyro and Tekken machine, but that’s because I didn’t have Playstation games, generally, since we were poor and any video game money I had typically went to Nintendo games (since I was far more into Pokémon and The Legend of Zelda). Like, if I had a choice between a Final Fantasy game I had never heard of or a new Pokémon game for the N64, I was going to go for the Pokémon game every time, no matter how much of a random spinoff it was. That was just how I was as a kid, and I didn’t have the disposable income to get both.

That said, I did try to play Final Fantasy IX once. I had rented it from Blockbuster (that sentence aged me terribly, didn’t it?), and even though I know now there’s no way in hell I was ever going to finish it within the week I had to play it, I was excited for it anyway. The problem is, there was something wrong with the first disc; it kept freezing shortly after the theater sequence in the beginning. I thought that meant I had to change the discs, but that didn’t work, obviously, since the first disc is not that short. In the end I returned it without getting any farther than the very beginning, and that was the end of that. (I did buy it ages ago on PSN, but I once again didn’t make it very far since the combat hasn’t aged well, imo, and it was bugging me. :/ Maybe I’ll go back to it someday.)

Since then I’ve played a handful of other games (which I’ll rate in a moment). In my experience, I tend to prefer the less traditional (i.e. non-numbered) Final Fantasy games, over the main series ones (which feels a bit backward, but hey). Overall I do think there are appealing things about the series, but I just never got very into it.

That said, of the ones I’ve played:

Final Fantasy III:

Nah | haven’t seen yet | didn’t like/gave up | like it | love it | highly recommend.

a reason why: This was one I actually didn’t mind very much in terms of story or combat (and it is in fact where I got the name Luneth from), but shamefully, I ended up getting to a part where I had to beat a boss (Medusa or something like that) that I just could not overcome. Truthfully, I could have overcome this obstacle by level grinding, but I abhor level grinding (and am especially irritated when I have to level grind despite not running from any random encounters), so I just . . . put it down and never went back to it. I never got very far and I don’t remember much about it aside from the fact that the main character was named Luneth, and I had a female red mage party member that I liked a lot.

Final Fantasy VII:

Nah | haven’t seen yet | didn’t like/gave up | like it | love it | highly recommend.

a reason why: I’m just honestly not very interested, haha. I already know all of the plot details and spoilers, and the fact that the localization has so many typos (from what I’ve seen) was rather off-putting to me. The graphics I can live with; typos are another story. But yeah, I know that everyone hypes up VII as being The Very Best Ever™ (it’s basically the Ocarina of Time of its series), but I was just never very interested in it. That said . . .

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII:

Nah | haven’t seen yet | didn’t like/gave up | like it | love it | highly recommend.

a reason why: I needed games for my PSP, saw that this was a thing, thought, “Hey, that’s an RPG, I’ll probably like that,” and got it. I LOVED IT. Yes, yes, I probably should have played through VII first, whatever, I don’t care about that. I already knew all the spoilers from VII, and this is a prequel anyway, so what does it matter? It doesn’t.

I praise Crisis Core for several things. One, I freaking adore the protagonist. Zack Fair is an actual puppy angel and I love him to pieces. Second, the combat is great. Rather than being traditional turn-based combat, Crisis Core is far more action-oriented, which is a lot more engaging for me. I also really love the DMW and how it gives you bonuses based on Zack’s memories with his loved ones. My god, Cissnei’s and Aerith’s bonuses might have been broken, but I loved them. So the gameplay was fantastic, especially with all the side missions you could do (I loved all of the side missions with Yuffie, hahaha). Lastly, that ending. THAT ENDING. This is a perfect example of a thing where, you already know how it’s going to end, you know Zack doesn’t survive the game because he can’t if VII is going to take place, and yet it still punches you right in the gut. This is one of the few things that made me cry just as hard on the second time through as I did on the first. It was beautifully executed (no pun intended) and just . . . aghhgdsghdsagdsa. Crisis Core, man. So, so good.

Final Fantasy IX:

Nah | haven’t seen yet | didn’t like/gave up | like it | love it | highly recommend.

a reason why: Again, I’ll probably go back to it someday, but the combat felt very tedious and boring which made me not very inclined to keep playing, especially with the frequency of random battles. But that said, the story seemed intriguing and the ending looks sweet (I’ve seen gifs on my dash), so I’ll probably go back and finish it someday, especially since I do own it.

Final Fantasy X:

Nah | haven’t seen yet | didn’t like/gave up | like it | love it | highly recommend.

a reason why: My roommate freshman year of college played this one while we were in the same dorm together, and I apologize to anyone this offends, but the voice acting was atrocious. I’m not talking about just in the fake laughing scene; other scenes grated on my ears, too. Voice acting can make or break a game for me (it broke me on Baten Kaitos before I even made it post the tutorial level, tbh), and that put me off X. To be fair, since she played it in the same room as I did I know a lot of the spoilers anyway, but still. 

Also, years and years ago there were people online who bashed Tales of Symphonia by calling it “just a cheap knock-off of Final Fantasy X,” so. That didn’t help to instill any warm, fuzzy feelings in me for it. :/

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance:

Nah | haven’t seen yet | didn’t like/gave up | like it | love it | highly recommend.

a reason why: I haven’t played this one in years, but my god did I adore it when I played it. Again, I saw that it was an RPG (for the Game Boy Advance, this time), and I like story-based games, so I bought it. I did not regret it. This was actually my first ever SRPG, but I found the gameplay very easy to understand, and the story sucked me in immediately. I mean, a bunch of kids who go to an alternate universe after reading a book? And then for that alternate universe to actually be a manifestation of their dreams (especially the dreams of one of them, Mewt) in an attempt to keep them there? Like, bruh, that’s my jam! I absolutely love stories like that, where they’re in alternate worlds and they have to fight to get out, but the main thing keeping them there is themselves. I remember going out of my way to clear all the bonus missions in that game even after beating the main story, I loved it just that much. (I tried to write fic, too, but it wasn’t very good, especially since I was like . . . thirteen/fourteen, haha.) It was great, a++.

Final Fantasy Tactics A-2:

Nah | haven’t seen yet | didn’t like/gave up | like it | love it | highly recommend.

a reason why: This one, however, aggravated me. I can’t remember why, exactly---it’s been a good number of years---but I think it had something to do with the disconnect it seemed to have with FFTA? Something like that, how it broke canon or something. I honest to god can’t remember, but I do remember that I was really annoyed, put it down, and never went back. Pure disappointment. =(

Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions:

a reason why: Again, I needed games for my PSP, and my friend Luke recommended this one to me (after I mentioned playing FFTA, but actually before I had played A-2), and though I was a bit disappointed that it had nothing to do with FFTA, really, I gave it a shot. AND I’M SO GLAD I DID.

Like, honestly? I’m so mad that I don’t have my PSP anymore, and that this isn’t on PSN for PS3, because I want to play it again so badly. Everything about this game was spot-on fuckin’ amazing. The story, the characters, the gameplay, the animation, the music---everything was phenomenal. Even the cameo characters, because I fully admit that one of my all-time favorite characters in the game was Balthier, and I considered getting XII just for him (I didn’t, though, since he’s a side character in it rather than the main). This game’s narrative has everything you could want from a narrative---intrigue, drama, betrayal, romance, emphasis on family, the works---and is just . . . god it’s so good, so much of the dialogue is golden (and I applied it rather well to YGO characters once upon a time, too). Honestly, this is probably my favorite of the games on this list (though Crisis Core is a close second). It’s incredible.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles:

Nah | haven’t seen yet | didn’t like/gave up | like it | love it | highly recommend.

a reason why: This is an odd case in that I really, really liked / loved it . . . but was forced to give up because I couldn’t beat the final boss (and I do mean the final, final boss). :(

I had so much fun playing this game. Despite how annoying the moogle was (“I’m tired, kupo!” “It’s freezing, kupo!” “I’m too HOT, kupo!” SHUT THE FUCK UP, KUPO!!), I found the exploration and variety in combat to be fantastic, and I loved my character (she was a wolf-styled selkie; I wish I remembered what I had named her). I also played this game with my older sister a lot, which was one of the few times we ever got along. She would help navigate, and I handled the combat. We were a good team at that, but even with her navigation and my combat skills, by the time we’d reach the final boss (Raem, I think its name was?), I’d be too low on health to beat it. :( I could have trained up more, but I just never went back, which is a shame. I will say that I adored the passage of time, and the memory aspect. Reading the journal entries on top of doing the sidequests for all the different characters in the game was probably my favorite part.

If only Kupo (his real name was Mog, but we called him Kupo), wasn’t so goddamn annoying. Honestly, Kupo, I know I need you to carry the chalice, but shut the fuck up for real.

And I think that’s all of the ones I’ve played! Well, I do remember playing another Crystal Chronicles game for the DS---Ring something or other---but I didn’t get very far and can’t even remember the title, so I don’t think it’s fair to rate it. :)

gonna say right off the bat that ishka, popnographic, and ad_astra on ao3 are your go-to people for good makorin. best makorin, in my humble opinion. not to mention that ad_astra wrote the fuckin’ makorin bIBLE, This Gentle Heart Will Mess You Up, which is the first installment of a three-part series that’s the reason i ship makorin in the first place. check it out if you know what’s good for you. 

The Captain’s Game by mangemouth is a personal favorite of mine. It’s from the perspective of Seijuurou, has adorable, established makorin, and has some of the best makoto characterization ive ever seen. 10/10 fic 

Love Thy Neighbor by attemptsonwords is another must read. fuck-buddy/roommate AU that kills me, just thinking about. ;~; crucial to your makorin experience, definitely. 

The Library of Lost Things, by themorninglark. goes down a different route than most, more poetic and symbolic or smth. SUPER good and kinda hard to explain :’> Another good one by themorninglark that’s sorta hard to put into words is We Meet Where No one Knows, which is just GORGEOUS

The Cry of You Bones by plantegg, aka that one smut fic that’ll drive you to take a cold shower after reading. Featuring Rin as an incubus and Makoto as a poor human with no knowledge whatsoever on demons, it’s very very good. 

Hot and Cold, by risotto. Hilarious, in character, and it involves Makoto waxing Rin’s body, in an entirely professional environment, of course. great for those days you wanna get turned on but also kill yourself with second hand embarrassment. really anything by risotto is gonna be some next-level shit, trust me

Call the Ships to Port, by Sierra. Fuckin fantastic pirate sex, to be blunt. 10/10, one of the all-around best. author is also super cool, which is always a plus

Bloom and Scatter, by dorkery. Not techincally a makorin fic, but it’s absolutely necessary to include it, bec it’s the best. Zombie AU with makorin survival buddies, watching each others’ backs and solving puzzles like fuckin champs. 

The Quest, by rinthegreat. Fantasy AU. I HIGHLY recommend this one on top of everything else, because not only is it a kickass fic with gorgeous makorin, but it’s inspired by one of MY drawings. Can you believe that??? life is so wild is2g. It includes prince!Rin and thief!makoto (WITH LONG HAIR MIGHT I ADD) bein’ super cute with each other and travelling together to finish up this long-forgotten quest. sososo good.
