The Battered Dragon
Buckle up, buttercups. This is a long one.
Jaune: Soooo... (continues looking around at the "forest" around him) where do you guys think we are?
Ruby: I don't know. I honestly didn't think I'd find anyone that quickly. Even if half of the group was tied up my a village of mice.
Weiss: (plucking a thorn out of her sleeve)They were... craftier than I would have thought.
Blake: (ears wilt) It makes me wonder where Yang is, or if she's okay.
Weiss: (places a hand on Blake's shoulder comfortingly) I'm sure we'll find Yang. You have to remember that this is Yang we're talking about. If anyone can manage surviving in an unknown world filled with random dangers, I'd place the charred remains of the Schnee fortune on it.
Blake: (ears perk up slightly) Yeah, you're right.
Weiss: (watches as Ruby and Jaune discuss what steps they should take next) You know. When we find her, it might be a good idea to have a bit of a heart-to-heart with Yang.
Blake: (ears spring skyward) I-I don't know what you're talking about.
Weiss: Blake, you almost jumped off the platform after Yang. I dragged you off the literal brink, and you immediately went feral on Neo afterwards.
Blake: I'm that obvious, huh?
Weiss: To everyone except Yang herself... (watches as Ruby trips over a random tree root and pulls Jaune down to the ground with her) And maybe those two.
Blake: (chuckles softly)
Jaune: Hey! Do you guys think we'll see the Lively Carpenter or the Battered Dragon???
Ruby: The Battered Dragon? I don't remember that character from the story.
Blake: The Battered Dragon was a strong warrior that fought back the night in a fiery blaze, but was always warm and kind towards the people in the book.
Weiss: We're not in a storybook. But! If we were, I wouldn't mind meeting the Lively Carpenter. They were so sweet in the story.
Jaune: I remember the Battered Dragon was like a barbarian of sorts. Super cool and strong who fought with her fists.
Ruby: I don't remember Yang ever reading that character. Actually, I don't remember her reading me that story at all.
Jaune: Huh... That's odd. I would have though- (draws sword) INCOMIIIIIING!!!
Jabberwalker: (bounds through the canopy into the clearing and slashes at Jaune)
Ruby: Jaune! (pulls Jaune out of the way)
Blake: Ruby! (throws Gambol Shroud, wraps the ribbon around Ruby, and yanks her back)
Weiss: (glyph attacks Jabberwalker and blasts it back)
Jabberwalker: Seeking - Searching - Contacting - DEVOURING!!! (leaps towards the group and slashes at the group wildly)
RWBJ: (get tossed to the ground)
Jabberwalker: (tail whips Blake to pin her down and leaps onto her)
Blake: (blocks claws with her sword and struggles to keep the claw from her face)
RWJ: Blake!
??? : I said I wasn't done with you yet!!!
-Burning fireball of stone barrels in and slams against the Jabberwalker's head, shattering into a million smoldering pieces as molten rock oozes over spiral horns-
??? : (rugged, dark brown leather adorned with intricate patterns and fur trims, well-worn trousers and boots, tanned leather tank top with tatters at the hem where the bottom has been torn off, revealing muscular abs and a few battle scars, and a blazing heart tattoo on a well-endowed chest. Scarred left arm is on display, muscles rippling as powerful hands grab the Jabberwalker's horns, while a paint chipped, slightly rusted metallic right arm glints dully in the sunshine. A purple bandana tied off where the metal meets flesh. Black and brown leather hand armor and pauldron adorn the left shoulder and hand with golden brown/grey whisps of fur protrude from under the plates. Burning golden hair burn out in a long trail behind a scorched, wooden dragon mask)
??? : Did you honestly think I'd let you hurt anyone here? (punches Jabberwalker a few times in the face) Then you're crazier than I thought! (throws Jabberwalker over to the next acre)
RWBJ: (stare in shock)
Jaune: (gasps like an excited child) Oh, my gosh! It's the Battered Dragon!!!
Blake: The Battered Dragon! In PERSON!
Weiss: We're actually in a fairytale....
Battered Dragon: (panting before squaring her shoulders and turning to RWBJ) Dammit! (takes off her mask, revealing one lilac and one crimson eye and three scars on her jaw) You guys weren't supposed to be here.
Jaune: Is that...?
Weiss: Yang?
Ruby: (walks up to the Battered Dragon) Yang?
Battered Dragon: (shakes her head, dislodging the tears in her eyes before nodding firmly) Yeah, Rubes. It's me. And you guys weren't supposed to-
Ruby: (grabs Yang's hand tightly) If you didn't think we'd come looking for you, then you must have forgotten who raised me.
Battered Dragon Yang: (sniffs and holds Ruby's hand) Right. I'm just... glad to see you guys again after all this ti- PUAH!!!
Blake: (tackles BDY to the ground and hugs her tight) Yang~
Battered Dragon Yang: (shocked eyes glance at Blake briefly before tears slip from her eyes, her nose wrinkles in an attempt to keep from crying, and she breaks. Arms wrap around Blake like a lifeline) It's actually you....
Weiss: (after a few minutes) Yang, what happened to you?

You know, because it's hard to give a massive amount of character in one post, I'm gonna list stuff about alternate rusted knights here
Repentant Thief: Emerald Sustrai, desperate for company used her semblance to hallucinate her friends/allies. Over time as her memory of them began failing, the illusions became flatter, more generic in their kindness and support, and at some points she truly believes that's what RWBY and Co. were like, while at others she can't stand the sight of them, the inaccuracies making her sick to her stomach.
She waits for her Heroes. The ones that saved her before.
She wears leather armor with a Leather helm that covers the lower portion of her face, with a large cloak and hood over all of it. her pants are very similar to previoupairs, simply plainer and sturdier. She has traded heels in for full hiking boots.

Fathomless Angler: Clover Ebi, now an old man, has grown tired, very, very tired. So tired he no longer cares to find a way out, and lets time slip by - He never read The Girl that fell Through the World, his knowledge of it's tale being minimal. He figures this is some twisted afterlife, that he'd done wrong fighting Qrow and has to let himself be punished for fighting his friend.
He Waits, as catching a fish is mostly waiting for it to take the bait. He's still trying to figure out his fish.
Clover wears a faded, dusty Atlesian coat, meant to have water and snow slide right off, with a large scarf and slick bucket hat. due to lack of care, his beard has grown long and scraggly, a veritable bush of salt and pepper. He wears Waders in place of his old Military boots.

The Cobalt Knight (Oxidized Cobalt): Alyx, upon deciding to amend her mistakes in the Ever After was assaulted by The Curious Cat. Jaune Arc, the Rusted Knight, still sick from the poison rushed to her aid. In the end, Alyx was saved, and the cat slinked away to lick it's wounds.
Jaune's didn't make it, and was swallowed by the tree.
Alyx, unable to heal him, to fix this mistake took up his weapons and trained. She was smart - out maneuvering and outsmarting the cat for years until she was able to fight it directly. Then they stayed apart, the Cat not wanting to risk themself, and Alyx not wanting to her own life in revenge.
Alyx waits for the same reasons Jaune did - Guilt, anger, self-loathing, and a need to help RWBY, with all the same weapons he fought with; Mind, Sword, and Shield.
She wears armor like Jaune's only simpler, and lighter, and in FAR better condition - only a little dirty and scuffed.

The Frosted Empress (Lonely): Weiss Schnee, Knowing all she had to do was wait, did just that. She waited. and Waited. And waited. She did her best to stay stable, she practiced arts, she kept up her training, she began to speak to herself in off moments, she never got along with people too much liker herself so Alyx was a handful to deal with.
She oscillates between a very sweet, matronly figure, and an Icy, bitchy Vol-1-esque personality, with moments of lucidity being not too uncommon.
This Weiss wears very simply constructed outfits - basic chain mail and dresses, with immense ornamentation, and a veil, like one would wear at a funeral. She has many different trinkets - leaves, feathers, jewelry and what not.

The Wilted Rose: Ruby Rose fell into the Ever After, and Suffered. She fought as much as she always had, but with no support, no clear goal and the weight of her failings crushing her, Alyx and Lewis were the Straws that broke the Camel's back.
She Ascended into the one person she knew could do anything.
Summer rose.
As motherly and sweet as ever, this rose has thorns only for The Curious Cat - even if she can't remember why.
She looks like an older Summer. With like, very graying hair. It's just Summer Rose.

At fifteen, Ruby Rose is supposed to be two years away from Beacon Academy. But after ditching school in the middle of the day and fighting robbers (and putting three people in the hospital), Ruby finds themself expelled from Signal and on the way to Beacon, on the fast track to becoming a hunter.
Leading a team which includes their sister, Yang, and new partners Weiss and Blake, Ruby seeks to have the best years at Beacon possible.
But the world has other plans in store. Salem watches from a distance and builds her tools, seeking the relics and the maidens for her own ends. As she looms closer, Ruby and friends are swept into the mysterious and apocalyptic underworld of Remnant, where every battle is a tally in the war against Salem and every failure could lead to death.
The war will be long. The losses will be high. But roses are resilient; their thorns can draw blood at the most unsuspecting of times.
And Ruby Rose will not let the world fall without the fight of their life.

Summary:
To be a master alchemist, you must change lives.
Several hundred years after an environmental apocalypse, the world of Remnant rebuilds. Ruby Rose, recent graduate of Vale’s alchemy college, is moving to the village of Patch with the rest of their family after Yang gets a job with the local rangers. Summary:
In Remnant, when a witch comes of age at 15, they enroll in a six year witch school to learn the depths and wonders of magic.
Ruby Rose is 13 when their magic matures and they receive a letter from Beacon Academy of Witchcraft. There’s no hope of hiding the early magic, but maybe they, their older sister, Yang, and their guardian, Little, can keep the rest of Ruby’s secrets hidden.

Yet, at Beacon, Ruby’s focus doesn’t stay on their own problems for long. Instead, Ruby finds themself following after Weiss Schnee, a fellow sproutling that Ruby suspects is in danger. When they discover how much danger Weiss is in, they vow to find a way to help her, no matter what.
As Ruby, Yang, and their new friends slip deeper into the darkness of Remnant’s hex-filled underworld, they’ll learn that Weiss isn’t the only one in danger. Men, monsters, and malignant magic vie to see who can destroy the world first, but only if Ruby and their friends can’t find a way to stop them.

Yang looked at the thorn-like tattoo that ran across her arm, her memories starting to blur as a second life came to view. She remembered being abandoned by Raven, found by her Taiyang and then sold to Atlas to make ends meet. Anger boiled up in her heart as the vine and thorn tattoo started to grow along her arm, practically wrapping around.
“Are you feeling better, my love?” Weiss asked as she wrapped her arms around Yang. “You weren't yourself earlier.”
“I… I think I”m better.” Yang sat down and held her head for a moment as she tried to sort through her memories. This didnt feel right anymore, as if there was something pushing memories into her that werent her own, but at the same time, it all felt so real. She could feel her blood boil, her hair burning with each breath she took. “A bit disoriented, but better.”
“Then you should understand now. We only have each other and cant trust anyone else.”
Yang wanted to argue, wanted to try to change Weiss’s mind, but couldnt find the words or the memories anymore. All she could remember was being left alone, given away, watching as a few of her friends betrayed her. Flames engulfed her as her outfit started to change, the white Schnee military suit she wore becoming something more suitable to a bandit in the harsh, Atlas climate as the flames started to die down. A smirk crossed her lips as she looked out towards the monitors, the last few memories she had from outside the nightmare pushed away and locked out of sight. “And what exactly do you plan to do now?”
The smile on Weiss’s face disappeared into a frown as the familiar face of Ruby appeared on screen as one of the statues caught a glimpse of the intruder. “For starters, we’ll need to get Ruby locked back into her room to keep her safe. If Father finds out-”
“I’ll take care of her,” Yang said as she adjusted her fur coat. “You can focus on the girl in the mask when she shows.”
“And you’re sure that wont be a problem? I know how close the two of you used to be.”
Yang sighed and readied her gauntlets. “She didnt come after me for years, but you were there for me when I showed up here. If you want her locked up for her own safety, then I’ll make sure we keep her safe.’
Weiss smiled and kissed her. “Then I’ll give Father the report and make sure the next train makes it to Atlas.”
Yang nodded and started to walk down the halls of Schnee Manor, footsteps echoing with every heavy step she took. Her eyes burned as they changed from violet to red as the nightmare grimm took a deeper root into her. All she wanted was for Weiss to be happy and those she cared about to be safe, and if Ruby wouldnt see reason to go back to her room, then she’d make sure she’d be safe by force.

Heh, that goes in a little late... but for one, I'm not reading on speed and had a lot of stuff to do the past couple weeks, and then Marissa Meyer's Winter / Wie Schnee so weiß is also really massive in comparison to its predecessors.
Which. I don't personally mind books over 800 pages when the plot captures me, and I have so much love for the characters and want all I can get about them, but it has to be said: This one drags in places. Not enough to bore me off, but just a little less introspective would have been nice and could have kept up the pacing in action sequences. And I love Cress a little less when she does the "men can't be sexually abused by women because they'll always enjoy it" trope on Thorne - when she knows that he was manipulated by a Lunar. And the narrative kinda supports her immature jealousy fit? Not a fan. Girl, he was literally mind-controlled into that kiss. Book, don't do that.
I notice I don't want to say bad things about this book because I really love it - it's a great conclusion to an awesome series. There is a lot of build-up and several failures of the protagonists, and it makes for a long story, but revolution isn't easy. It leaves a lot of damage on its protagonists, and the scale on which this plays out is constantly present in the threat hanging over them. Innit it nice for teenagers to fight / prevent a war. I love them all. I especially have a lot of love for Winter - not just because she's gentle, kind, all of that, but also because she has got so much sass. One of my all-time favorite depictions of a mentally ill person, Winter is choke-full of personality. The most common mentally ill character archetypes are Uncontrollably Violent and Helplessly Harmless. Winter is the former only very temporarily after her break, and spends a lot of time masterfully playing the latter, always instrumentalizing that people underestimate her. She is not unbothered by her illness, but it never makes her a potato of a person. She is perceptive, she is brave, and she keeps plotting and teasing and flirting (and I'm not just talking Jacin; I shall forever read her and Scarlet's relationship as a mutual girl crush). I also appreciate that Scarlet has that "don't mollycoddle her; she's just crazy, not a baby" attitude. *chef's kiss*
While the original Snow White tale still makes out a part of the plot, it's honestly not enough to make it too predictable because there is so. Much. Going on. One teen rebel needs to learn politics, another goes full hacker attacker, people who don't like each other very much have to invest trust (Jacin, you little shit), and, again, I appreciate that Marissa Meyer never goes the teenager = stupid route, and never the emotional = acting irrationally route. She also doesn't skip the ugly parts of the whole ordeal; there is lasting damage done, scars that will remain, changes that cannot be undone, dead that won't be revived. A society can't just be changed into Utopia overnight, solutions are imperfect. It's all there. No one could say that the Lunar Chronicles are flawless, but there is a lot of thought put into them.
TL;DR - Winter shall have 4 out of 5 red candy apples: 🍎🍎🍎🍎 BUT with the note that I'd give an additional slice if there was an apple slice emoji. It is a great final book to the series; what annoyed me were really miniscule things in the grand scheme.

Nine Days of Lancaster
[Day 9: Dance]
In the midst of uncertainty and the fallout of an election, Jacques Schnee has sent invitations to a party. None the wiser, Jaune has only recently returned to the academy and is looking for his friends.
Jaune:Ruby? Hello? Where is everyone one? *opens door* Ru- Ruby?
The girl is startled, hoping up from her chair. Her scroll projected a giant screen that played ballroom dance videos, which Jaune found more than a little odd.
Jaune:Uhhh taking up a hobby?
Ruby:Hardly. Weiss’s dad as invited the General to a party to celebrate his win. It’s mainly to try and kick Ironwood off the council. It’s an all hands on deck kind of situation.
Jaune:Okay. Still not really getting all of…this.
Ruby:Unfortunately, we were told that it would be in our best interest to “mingle” and “work the room.” Apparently standing guard doesn’t give off the appropriate impression.
Jaune:Ah, socializing, your worst fear
Ruby:Untrue! Besides it’s not like you’re exactly a pro at it.
Jaune:Fair, but I don’t need to prepare by watching waltzing tutorials.
Ruby:*red* Anything could happen! I could standing near a punch bowl when some random stranger asks for a dance, catching me off guard and ends with hurt feet and punch on the dance floor!
Jaune:That moment at the dance seems to be more traumatic for you then the chance encounter with Cinder that same night.
Ruby:I fear no battleground but a dance floor.
Jaune:Hate to break it to ya. Those videos are not gonna help. You just need to learn basic steps with an actual partner. Fortunately for you, I’m pretty confident in my skills.
Ruby:That’s what they all say before I step on your feet.
Jaune:Hehe, nothing I can’t handle.
He closed the door behind him and moved all the chairs out of the way. Jaune grabbed Ruby’s scroll to switch her tutorials to classic music then stood before her, hand out.
Ruby took his hand easy enough then let out a gasp as he suddenly got very close. Less than an inch between them. His left moved to her lower back, putting just enough pressure on it; while his right hand had a gentle yet for grip. Has Jaune always been this tall? Ruby didn’t remember having to look up into his before.
Jaune:I’ll lead.
Ruby:O…kay~
For some reason, Ruby started getting nervous. Slowly, he leaned to the right, taking a step for her to follow. Step by step he telegraphed his movements for her to read, gradually picking up the pace as she caught on.
Jaune:See? You’re getting it.
Ruby:Beginners luck.
Jaune:Even so, there’s never been anything you couldn’t do when you put your mind to it. Just think of this as another team attack.
Ruby:Hehe, not sure how enemies would feel if I yelled “ladybug” and then busted out into a dance.
Jaune:I sure would be caught off guard. Deception is half the battle.
Ruby:Dork. Anyways, I’m only as good as my partner. Guess that means you’re stuck with me. What’s that make us? Thorns and Swords?
Jaune:Hmmmm or….
Ruby felt Jaune’s hand brace her back more. He suddenly began to lean her way while holding her close. Ruby nearly panicked but managed to keep herself together as Jaune led her into a dip. Ruby looked over her shoulder to see just how low she had gotten then was treated with a surprise when she turned back around. Right above her face was the smiling knight, gazing right at her with the same friendly eyes he first greeted her with. Ruby felt her heart nearly stop, and her cheeks go red.
Jaune:How about Lancaster?
Ruby:S-Sure. I…I really like that name.
Jaune:Lancaster it is.
He brought her back up slowly as the song began to end. To Ruby’s shock, she was a bit saddened by both his hands finally let her go. The Reaper rubbed her head sheepishly while Jaune grabbed her scroll for her.
Jaune:I think you got this. It’s you after all.
Ruby:Thanks. Umm that was fun, surprisingly.
Jaune:Sometimes what makes a dance is the right partner. Anyways, I should really go find Ren, Nora, and Oscar. Talk to you in a little bit?
Ruby:Yeah, of course.
Jaune:*walking out*
Ruby:….Wait!
Jaune:Hmm?
Ruby:Umm, oh you know. I was just thinking…depending on how things go, maybe we can share a proper dance together?
Jaune:*smiles* I’d like that. Let’s do it.
Ruby:Cool. Uh, bye~
Jaune:Later Ruby. *closes door*
She sorta just…stood there for a moment. Ruby slowly took in a deep breath before letting it out even slower. The girl held her face, feeling the heat coming from it. Since when did dancing feel like that!? Jaune’s words echoed in her head. “The right partner.” Sounds like a line pulled right out of a fairytale. Then again, those were always her favorite stories.
Ruby: C’mon me, there’s bigger things to think about right now.
