This is my first #transitiontuesday 😊 I still can’t quite believe how much has changed 🥰 I really felt like it was time to show what HRT has done for me, as I constantly see who I am now and forget how far I’ve come. I can finally say ‘well done dead-name, you’ve got to where you’ve always wanted to be!😊’ I want to share too as we all face #transphobia in different ways and I want to share that being trans isn’t all peaches and rainbows - We take a brunt of hate and I want to share a recent event that happened to me. I had an appointment with my GP to discuss some poor handling of my care, basically awful behaviour with no excuse without going to much into detail. In this meeting this GP made an awful personal comment on my appearance to try and hurt me as he had taken my complaint very personally for no other reason than I can see as simply being transphobic. He would never have made this comment to a cis woman, but no because I’m a #transwoman it’s obviously fine /sarcasm. 😅 The comment my GP made out the blue goes: - ‘I would have recognised you from before transitioning and anyone else would too you don't look that different so we all know it's you, do you actually think you look any different to 'him'? As realistically you need to expect still looking exactly like 'him' people are gonna know it's you whether you like it or not’ - in a nasty arrogant tone sitting back in his seat looking proud of what he said.. basically suggesting that I still look like a man but in woman’s clothing. 😔 It really really hurt, even though I knew it wasn’t true and he was just trying to get a reaction (which he didn’t get a reaction off me luckily for me) it still hurt like hell and has really stuck with me for the last few weeks. 😞 Long story short coming across this picture of me from this time last year has really made me realise that no, my GP was completely wrong and out of line for making such a nasty personal comment on my appearance. And some small-minded village GP is not going to take that away! I debated posting today. I know it’s been a minute but I’m still around! 14 year difference here!! It’s funny how life catches up and keeps ya busy. Your validity doesn't depend on others' perceptions of you. . I've posted plenty of #transitiontuesday photos over the years, and it's tempting to look at them and think "oh look that's a man who turned into a woman", but that's not exactly true. . Sure, I looked like a man before. But I was still a woman, I just didn't know it yet. . When you first start to understand transgender culture, this can be a bit of a difficult concept to wrap your head around. After all, we're used to looking at someone and perceiving their gender based on their looks. But you're a woman, you're a man, you're nonbinary, if you feel like you are. . This might be the biggest hurdle for cis folks to understand - most cis people don't feel a particularly strong draw to their gender identity. They don't "identify" as men or women, they just go with their default settings. It's just not something they think about, so when a trans person explains it to them it doesn't make a lot of sense. . But for those of us who understand, it's important to remember that not everyone is able to transition. It could be they live in a regressive part of the world where trans lives are in greater danger. It could be that they understand what they could lose by transitioning - often jobs, families, and even homes are on the line - and decided it's not worth it. It could be they have a medical condition that makes medically transitioning difficult if not impossible. There are plenty of different reasons why a trans person might not transition. . I'm tired of doing #transitiontuesday posts. I know y'all love them - they're some of my posts with the highest engagement. But the memories are too painful for me right now. Instead, I thought I'd do a different type of post. . These photos were taken about half an hour apart from each other. . Here's the reality of being a transgender woman. I have beard stubble. I have an Adam's apple. I don't have perfect skin. I have a male-pattern receding hairline. And while I work to either change a lot of these things or hide the ones I can't, after nearly three years of living as a woman, they're still there. . But guess what? It's not makeup that makes me a woman. It's not the breast forms I wear until my real boobs have grown to the size I'd like. It's not whether or not I've shaved that day. . I'm a woman regardless of what I do or don't do in my beauty regimen. Even if I stopped shaving for weeks and my beard fully grew back, I'd still be a woman. Makeup doesn't make you a woman. Beauty doesn't make you a woman. It might make you more comfortable in your skin, but you don't wake up a man and cover that up. .
