Canadian police say an attack on a university class examining gender studies was  ideologically motivated and targeted due to the suspect’s animus towards the transgender community.  On Wednesday, a 24-year-old man walked into a Philosophy 202 class at Waterloo University in Ontario and stabbed three people, including the class professor.   Investigators believe that the attack was ideologically motivated, and that Geovanny Villalba-Aleman targeted that particular class because of his animus towards the transgender community.  A 38-year-old female professor, and two students — a 20-year-old woman and 19-year-old man—were transported to hospitals where they were treated for stab wounds described as “serious but not life-threatening” by Waterloo Police.  Geovanny Villalba-Aleman, a recent graduate of the university, was arrested shortly after the attack and has since been charged. [...]

A team of researchers is designing novel systems to capture water vapour in the air and turn it into liquid. University of Waterloo professor Michael Tam and his PhD students Yi Wang and Weinan Zhao have developed sponges or membranes with a large surface area that continually capture moisture from their surrounding environment. Traditionally, fresh water for consumption is collected from rivers, lakes, groundwater, and oceans (with treatment). The current technologies Dr. Tam is developing are inspired by nature to harvest water from alternative sources as the world is facing a serious challenge with freshwater scarcity. "A spider's web is an engineering marvel," said Tam, a University Research Chair in the field of functional colloids and sustainable nanomaterials. "Water is efficiently captured by the web. The spider doesn't need to go to the river to drink, as it traps moisture from the air."

"Mapping the Future: Navigating the Course to Dream University"
Hello there! I am Vyomkesh Ajay Walanju, an undergraduate student studying Recreation and Sports Business at the University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. Hope you are well and find this blog useful if you're planning your education overseas for the first time in your life. Getting to study abroad is an outstanding achievement for anyone and the excitement and joy you're filled with when you get the offer letter in your hand or by email cannot be explained, I can understand the joy you are feeling right now, and I am proud of you for making it this far. I still remember the day I got my offer letter from the University of Waterloo. I was screaming in my house that I got accepted into one of the best universities but for this to happen, I worked hard and prepared myself for a few things academically and mentally. The reason why I am writing these blogs is because I didn't have much guidance on how to prepare for my IELTS nor did I know how to do things properly in University as it was my first time trying to manage things on my own. It was a rollercoaster ride for me, especially during my first term. As an international student, I want to share some experiences I had and hopefully help you guys when you will be commencing your first year of University. Now you must be wondering, why I chose the University of Waterloo? So it began with a passion for basketball that I wanted to pursue and was interested in understanding how sports events get marketed and what happens behind the scenes, etc. I was more inclined toward Sports Management but in India, basketball isn't very popular neither is the awareness about sports management. When someone here's the word sports management in India, "You just have to play all day, right?". That was my realization that I am not studying sports management here. While I was applying for universities in Canada, most of my friends from Discord recommended that I should keep the University of Waterloo as an option. When I looked up Recreation and Sports Business they had so many options on which classes I could take which is a plus point. I could learn marketing, leisure, health classes, and so much more! They also had a co-op where you can apply for jobs and have work terms. Co-op is basically where you have study terms and work terms, it allows you to work while studying. My counsellor told me that the University of Waterloo where I wanted to get into was tough and my chances to get in were low. I had the grades and a good score in my IELTS  but in the end, it all came down to luck. During my application process for this University, I had to fill out parts A and B which described my personality and showed that the major focus is on human aspects rather than just marks. To be very realistic, my expectations were low and I applied to a few more universities like the University of Brock and the University of Guelph. Then one day, just a week before my birthday, my mom came into my room and asked me to check my OUAC account where you send applications and also receive offer letters from Universities, I told my mom that I don't think I'll get an offer letter from the University of Waterloo, my mom insisted and was like 'might as well check'. I logged in and then scrolled down to the offer letter section and when I saw that I had an offer letter from the University of Waterloo, then I said, 'Oh snap' and  I screamed and I realized that I got a birthday present before my birthday.
Well, here we are and that is it for my opening blog! As this is my first blog, bear with me a little as I am still learning how to write and hopefully, my blogs may help you a little to get through your University. Hope you enjoy reading this one! Please stay tuned for the next one!

I focused my internships on small companies for one reason.
Impact.
I wanted to make sure that I was getting interesting work and that the work I was doing was going to be impactful at the company.
The interesting thing is that when I was younger, my work ethic wasn't so great. I was tuned in from 9-5 but eager to get out and go play video games.
Regardless, I set my sights on small companies for impact. This worked out well and had me acquainted with the startup world early on.

Welcome to Professor Hunt’s History 105 Rock ‘n’ Roll History Blog!
Tumblr media
Hello, this is Professor Andrew Hunt – Dr. Rock and Roll – welcoming you to History 105: Rock ‘n’ Roll and U.S. History (Fall Term 2022)  at the University of Waterloo!  I am so thrilled to be back on campus, teaching again after a few years of teaching remotely due to the pandemic. Get ready for an exciting term in the  course where Rock Music meets History. Lectures will meet twice a week, Tuesday and Thursday mornings, 11:30 to 12:50, in   EV3 1408. If there  is anything I can do to make this course a more enjoyable experience for  you, please do not hesitate to let me know. I will be holding office hours during the term, listed on your syllabus, and I am happy to  any questions you might have about the class. It’s essential that you  come to lectures as often as possible, because that’s where I play the  music loud, and make the history come alive.
I’m excited, and  honoured, that you’ve chosen to join me on a rock and roll odyssey this  term.
Buckle your seat belts (or better yet, don’t!) and rock on!!!

The University of Waterloo says it will offer free tuition to qualified students from the two First Nations communities whose traditional grounds the school sits upon.
It says those who are members of the Six Nations of the Grand River and the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation will be considered for the initiative.
“This announcement is part of Waterloo’s efforts toward indigenization, decolonization and reconciliation, which are at the heart of the values guiding us as an institution of higher learning,” Waterloo president Vivek Goel stated.
“We hope that by reducing financial barriers for these students we will encourage them to participate in our innovative academic, entrepreneurship and co-op programs, which increases their future opportunities while strengthening communities and economies.”

A tiny robot that could one day help doctors perform surgery was inspired by the incredible gripping ability of geckos and the efficient locomotion of inchworms.
The new robot, developed by engineers at the University of Waterloo, utilizes ultraviolet (UV) light and magnetic force to move on any surface, even up walls and across ceilings.
It is the first soft robot of its kind that doesn't require connection to an external power supply, enabling remote operation and versatility for potential applications such as assisting surgeons and searching otherwise inaccessible places.
"This work is the first time a holistic soft robot has climbed on inverted surfaces, advancing state-of-the-art soft robotics innovation," said Dr. Boxin Zhao, a professor of chemical engineering. "We are optimistic about its potential, with much more development, in several different fields."
