Wishes for 2022

Made this at the beginning of the year: my wish for the new year paired with the Pantone color of the coming year.

One: Very Peri is a gorgeous color and I couldn't resist.

Two: Onward felt like a big wish at the beginning of the year, but now that we're halfway through it, I've moved onward in so many different ways and I'm happy for it. Stressed still, but happy for the changes.

Onward to the back half of 2022!

Micro-fic (3 of 3) August 2022

-------------- “My name is Peri.”

“Okay,” Melanie says. “You can call me Mel.”

They smile at her, brash and odd and somehow appealing. “Okay, Mel.”

“Is Peri short for something?”

“You know, I’m not sure yet.”

Melanie was never born.

When Melanie was five, she understood the concepts of sentience and sapience, and how they swirled into existence in new life forms. She asked her mother what had happened for her to have it as well.

“I wanted it badly enough,” Melanie’s mother had said. “And so, I made it happen.”

Melanie accepted that answer. She was content. Her mother had wanted her, and that was all that mattered.

After all, there was no question how this happened. Melanie was built.

Her bones are spun glass, reinforced in ways that take years to understand, and her muscles are woven iron. Her joints are bronze and fired clay, and her hair is a wig. She does not break easily, for the complex ties of magic and science that built her are hardy things. When she does break, however, she needs her mother to put her back together again.

She does not heal. Not on her own.

“Be careful,” her mother says, as she stitches an open wound with a soldering gun that wields bottled dragons’ flame. Melanie watches as her own brown skin closes with the kiss of fire. “Not everyone will be happy to know that you are here and unashamed in your presence.”

“That man said that I was wrong to exist,” Melanie says, looking up at her mother. “Was it illegal to create me?”

“No,” her mother says, smiling in a way that doesn’t look very kind. It looks proud, and maybe a little spiteful. Melanie’s mother is usually quite nice, but sometimes, she can’t afford to be, like when the older neighbor boy tried to pull off Melanie’s wig and then laughed at her for crying. “I had the permits to push these limits. Some people just think that life created in new ways isn’t life at all.”

“Oh.”

Years later, Melanie meets Peri, and wonders how their life began.

Peri does not act human.

Melanie doesn’t question it after the first deflection. There’s no reason to. She’s not human either, so it’s not like hiding like that, under pretty flesh and carbon bones, is anything new for her. Maybe they just have different reasons for what they do.

After all, Melanie doesn’t answer all questions, either.

“Endorphins are strange,” Peri comments once, reading a book on human biology. “Why does a chemical meant to trigger happiness cause such complicated reactions?”

“Human brains are complicated,” Melanie says, tapping her cheek. “It’s like a web, all dainty and glistening. If you touch one strand, all the others react, because it’s all connected.”

“That’s interesting.”

“I think so, too.”

When Peri bleeds, they bleed stars.

That is the best way Melanie can put it.

There is a traffic light near Melanie’s apartment. There are many traffic lights, really, but there is one that was adjusted to have a shortened yellow signal, one year ago. Accidents are happening more often, because people still expect that they’ll have five seconds to stop instead of three. Melanie’s fairly sure some people have died, though she always does her best to watch and grab tourists or children who try to walk too soon.

Peri is fast, though, faster than she is, and darts through crowds and streets like a comet. They always laugh as though there’s nothing wrong, and they hum when they are happy, and they slip through small spaces like physics is just a suggestion.

Melanie doesn’t catch them before they dodge around a small family and out into the crosswalk.

The light says it’s fine to walk. The taxi doesn’t stop in time.

Minor injuries, Melanie assures herself, when she helps Peri out of the street. Their leg is bleeding, maybe broken, but it is not enough to risk calling an ambulance for someone who isn’t human.

They make it to a bench in a small park. They sit, gingerly. Only then does Melanie look into Peri’s eyes.

They’re different. There is no pupil, iris, sclera. They are dark, and churning, and viscous, and they hold swirling hints of light like someone mixed glitter into ink. The façade has slipped, just a little.

Melanie did read once that the eyes are the windows to the soul.

“Are you going to be okay?” she asks.

Peri turns their head and looks at their leg. Their blood is dark and shining, and very much like their eyes. Melanie thinks of blue sandstone, even if the glitter in the liquid is far more uneven.

Tiny galaxies, she imagines. A universe hidden in skin.

“I will be fine,” they say, smoothing a hand over the jagged tear in their skin. When their hand comes away, there is no evidence of the injury save for the rip in their pants. There isn’t even blood. “I do not die.”

“Okay,” Melanie says, because that’s probably true. She shrugs, and swings her legs, and looks at their face. “Your eyes look like stars.”

Peri blinks and looks at her, and their eyes are already back to normal. They have a sclera and pupil again, settled in an iris so dark a brown that it is nearly black. Their eyes are monolid, with full lashes, and a little dusting of freckles just below, a more natural constellation than those they keep behind their coverings.

They look human, and Melanie is a little disappointed. She liked their eyes before.

Peri blinks again. They answer her question.

“They are.”

Melanie considers that. “Stars are too big to be inside an eyeball. Mass at that concentration becomes a black hole.”

Peri shrugs. “Magic is strange. So is science. I was a galaxy once, but there were people inside me. They believed, very hard, in the importance of a galaxy as a sapient entity. That belief was enough to make me, or at least to fuel them through their attempts.”

That makes sense.

“You were born because someone believed you would be, and tried very hard to make it so?” Melanie asks.

Peri nods. It is short, and firm, and their expression is not quite human. “Yes.”

When Melanie smiles, it’s real and true. “So was I. Mother wanted to make me, very much, so she kept trying until she did.”

“You are an automaton.”

“I am… something.” Melanie hesitates. “I do not know if there is a word for what I am, that does not have cultural associations that I do not have a right to. I could never decide. Your choice may be the best word for it.”

Peri blinks again. They nod again.

“Do you need to breathe?” they ask.

“I do not,” Melanie says. “Why?”

Peri smiles. “Would you like to see the stars, Melanie Temitope?”

“I need to ask mother first.”

(Mother agrees.)

Pantone is announcing its Color of the Year for 2024 at 8:00 AM Eastern time tomorrow (December 7th).

Is it me or does Pantone seem to have a knack for picking a COTY that is never heard from again? I mean, 2023's is Viva Magenta and where is it? Where was Very Peri in 2022 or Ultimate Gray/Illuminating in 2021? The only time I ever see the COTY is on Pantone's site, never in the wild.

Pantone

Pantone standard colour matching system, used by over 10 million designers, ensures standardisation

Pantone uses the CMYK process

As of 2023 there are 2390 colours in the Pantone system

By pairing grey as an accent with other colours it increases the viewers perception that the other colour has a metallic taint

Use of Colour in the Real World

London Underground uses coloured lines that are all horizontal, vertical or diagonal at 45 degrees to create a simplified map of all the stations and stops that’s easier for the user to navigate

Road Signage

Brown indicates areas of historical interest, white for place names, yellow for roads

In the late 1950s, Jock Kinneir and Margaret Calvert, two British graphic designers, created the signage from the UK motorways and created new fonts for them. This signage was later adopted by Ireland too.

Contested Spaces

Derry is a prime example of a contested space in Ireland. On the Bogside (mainly catholic area) of Derry, the tricolour is widely used as a symbol of Irish nationalism

While on the Waterside, the Loyalist (Protestant) area, the use of Union Jack colours and orange dominate the area.

In 2016 Stuart Semple created the world’s “Pinkest Pink” in retaliation to Kapoor buying the rights to Vantablack

Semples pink is available to everybody except Kapoor, who is banned from buying it

Must sign a contract when you’re buying it that you’ve no affiliation with Kapoor
