Cyborg, the Greatest Titan

(Titans (2023) #7- Cyborg shows why no one can bring him down)

So there was once a seemingly innocuous question asked on Titans Twitter:

Though some used it to prop up their faves, it turned into a serious and big discussion: Who is the Greatest Titan, epitomizing what it means to be a Titan the most?

There were a variety of answers, majority being one of Dick, Donna, Starfire, Raven, or even Wally. But what I noticed was the surprising lack of one answer: Cyborg.

One of the most popular Titans, whom DC clearly sees as one of the Titans Trinity (upper right corner):

Whose removal from Titans lore caused a massive fan uproar, yet among Titans Twitter, probably the most dedicated of Titan fans, Cyborg's name was barely mentioned as a candidate to be the Greatest Titan:

And who has committed to this mission more than Cyborg?

Victor who fought for the team when everyone including past leaders like Dick and Donna walked away:

A man who because the Titans gained utter defiance in who he is, saving not only himself from despair, but also became devoted to giving other teens that same courage, inspiring them to show that they are not freaks nor they are ever alone, thus changing so many lives (go to 2:38 for the start of the iconic speech, but I recommend starting at 2:17)

The tiktok theories are doing a disservice to my girl Tigris so of course I have to post about it on here.

Her defining characteristics are her compassion, selflessness, and later her self-modification. All of which drove Snow to scorn her.

She empathizes with Lucy Grey and other tributes because she’s able to see herself in them as well as recognize them as the innocent children that they are, no one except her and Sejanus do this. When Sejanus is empathetic, Snow is disgusted or simply thinks he’s pathetic and pities him. When Tigris is empathetic in general Snow pities her (ex: his internal monologue when Mrs. Plinth visits). The conversations Snow has with them (Sejanus/Tigris) do not foster an understanding between them or him and the districts, it only informs how he manipulates situations and the people in them.

Sejanus was a stain on his public image that he couldn’t wash out, and he hated it. Tigris is spared for as long as she is because she is both his caregiver and breadwinner for his formative years. Once he is elevated to a position of power and she is reduced to a former caregiver he begins to scare her, the movie shows how nervous she is at the end and his callousness to her is present throughout the book. He has no need for her so once she begins to disagree or annoy him too much he can easily cast her aside.

Its most likely that she grew distant after he decided to continue working with Gaul and she continued to empathize with tributes (she would've grown close with at least some of the tributes she styled) which would just annoy him. Her self modification would tarnish his public image which is just another strike against her as public perception of their family is his primary concern in tbsoas.

Tigris knows full well how to bite her tongue to please others for her own sake but eventually he probably truly cut her off because of any confrontation she initiated after witnessing 1.) cannibalism in the games 2.) prostitution of victors.

Guest of Honor Announcement: Luciano Muriel

Barricades 2024 is pleased to announce Luciano Muriel as one of our Guests of Honour for this year's convention!

Muriel is a playwright, novelist and secondary school teacher. He's been awarded with the National Theater Prize "Castelló a Escena" for Vals para el pez piedra, the International Award of Youth Theater of the Editorial DALYA for Stop Amargura, the first prize in the XXVII National Contest «Calamonte Joven» for Angélica, with the Prize “Sapere Aude” of the Ávila Arts and the Youth Humanities Award of Castilla y León for Grantaire, a text that was also selected by the Aid for Youth Creation 2017 program of the National Institute of Youth (INJUVE) for its production.

Muriel's panel will detail the creative process behind the show Grantaire, from the discovery of the character during the first reading of Victor Hugo's Les Miserables to the opening night og the staging at the Teatro Pradillo of Madrid. It will cover questions including: Why Grantaire? Why a dramatic monologue? Why include Amaral songs? What did the awards and subventions entail? Muriel promises all the answers to these and many other questions!

The date and time of Muriel's panel are still being finalized.

So was it any good? tbosas I mean

Well,,,,,,,,, kind of? I had fun, but also went in knowing they won't pay attention to what I loved about the book so my expectations were properly low. TBOSAS is my fav THG book so a different adaptation exists in my head

Non-spoilery: The movie is divided in parts like the book, but there is no rhyme or reason why, no dramatic breaks or changes like in the books. The Reaping isn't on July 4th because of course. Tom Blyth as Coriolanus was a surprise because I expected nothing from him other than looking sort of like old Snow. The movie naturally removed any and all nuance from his character and kept spelling out everything, but there were a few scenes where they let him yknow, act out how his character is supposed to feel, and it was really good! Rachel Zegler as Lucy Gray was more of a mixed bag - sometimes she was fantastic in selling the over-the-top dramatic flare, but other times (especially towards the beginning) it was just weird. I firmly believe this is because the movie didn't fully commit to Lucy Gray as a charming crowd director who keeps her heart hidden and instead made her a more honestly vulnerable girl. She dazzled in musical numbers, though, that girl is a performer through and through! Viola Davis was bad I am so sorry but I felt like I was watching a Disney Channel performance and it's entirely the movie's fault and not hers. Peter Dinklage was super good as Dean Highbottom, he makes him all sad and lost without being over-the-top. The rest of the cast was also good. I loved the sets and the costumes, very in-line with what I'd imagined. The night/dark scenes were so dark that subtitles felt like they were burning into my eyes, it was the absolute worst quality dark scenes I've ever seen in a big movie.

Spoilery:

They removed Coriolanus' obsessive love for Lucy Gray and turned it sooo muted :(((( He didn't even want to kiss her before the Games! He didn't try to control her or feel jealousy or ANYTHING that could imply he might turn on her one day!! His emotional changes and impatience and politeness and selfish kindness are also all gone now. Sejanus and he aren't nearly as close as in the book, but there was this funny moment where the two of them had a more intense forehead touch moment than any Coriolanus shared with Lucy Gray and it made me chuckle. Tigris and Coriolanus were very very well done, I loved how she was always his first bestie!!! But I am sort of annoyed they turned it from "Tigris puts Coriolanus down for the way he treats others" to "Tigris is scared Coriolanus will become his dad". Lucy Gray's Reaping was absolutely horrible, she threw a singing fit instead of being a confident performer, so it makes no sense that she just flips a switch into untouchable after. Loved the snake charmer climax where everyone stands up for Lucy Gray and proves that Capitol needs a victor! It worked better for the movie than the book version, and the way the music exists as a meta instrumental scene where the score eventually catches up to her singing - THAT is how ALL her songs should have been treated!!! The way music worked was one of my biggest issues, sometimes they were totally off tonally from what their role was in the books (The Ballad of Lucy Gray Baird this is about YOU Maiah Wynne's version makes me sob to this day while the movie version is only saved by Rachel's passion) and only the snake song was properly utilized as a plot point. They were such good opportunities for exposition that is more subtle than just putting whatever is Coriolanus feeling in clunky dialogue. And the clunky dialogue WAS constantly used to make up for the amount of internal monologues, even if it made zero sense -at the end they literally had Lucy Gray say "Haha if you destroyed the guns and killed me you could go to District 2 no sweat hahahaha anyway I'll go get some potatoes bye" like what. In what world would she literally tell him that. She is supposed to be a smart survivor. They also put "it's things we love most" quote as the final line in the movie, and I can't describe what a stupid choice that was, because if it wasn't there the movie would go "Highbottom tells Coriolanus he won't be able to forget Lucy Gray-> Coriolanus' proud exit where he believes to be the victor as snow falls down -> Can't Catch Me Now end credits including the snow motif", which would have been SO much stronger since that song delivers the "Lucy Gray eventually caught up to Coriolanus" message and we don't get it spelled out like we're 5 years old. It's not the only part of the movie where references to the OG stick out like a sore thumb, and I am once again asking Why. Why don't you think your audience is smart enough to understand.

spoilers for the ballad of songbirds and snakes movie down below!! but i just need to talk abt this in xtreme detail before i explode

1. i really liked the Baby Snow / Tigris inclusion. i was wondering if they’d include the cannibal scene

2. the beginning was just a straight up thirst trap sorry. like ik in the book snow was freaking out over his shirt but it didn’t rlly occur to me that he’d be butt booty naked. im not complaining bc i said it once and i’ll fucking say it again: i’m not watching someone be manipulative AND ugly for two fucking hours. it was just kinda a jump scare

3. also another concern was that you wouldn’t be able to tell how shitty of a person he was since he’s so outwardly nice but his internal monologue is slimy and ratworthy, so i thought they’d do the things movies do where he’s narrating his thoughts to the audience. yk like “hey persephone! <3. how are you??” and then his voiceover is like “i fucking hate this bitch. cannibalistic weirdo” but maybe that would have been too humorous

4. speaking of humor i actually loved lucky so fucking much. he rlly emulated the whole “what i lack in experience i make up for in personality :)” thing and just he kinda carried the fact that everything abt televising the games was so new. also that scene at the zoo where lucy gray asked him who the fuck he even was and the cameraman started laughing.. funny as fuck. enjoyed that part immensely

5. also she did in fact correct them that her name was lucy gray and not just lucy

6. loved the whole “how come she gets a mender” “MENTOR” part i’m also glad they kept that in

7. let’s go back to the beginning. i LOVE how closely they stuck to the book when it came to the shirt scene “that must be why it reminds me of my maids bathroom” THATS what i’m talking about

8. also clemensia is sooo pretty. one thing that irritated me was how OFTEN she and snow kept glancing over at each other during dean highbottom’s speech. like i know i’m being irrational abt this but most the time she would look over at him and he would NOT look back (or vice versa) instead of them BOTH hitting each other w the “what the fuck?” glance and something abt that did admittedly grind my gears

9. fucking love sejanus’ actor the first movie i saw him in was west side story and he ate here

10. speaking of that… coral fucking ate too every single scene i was on her side she was the victor to ME

11. anyway let’s go back a bit with the proposal gaul had snow (and clemensia) write up. to me, the way the scene unfolded was weird. it was supposed to show a contrast between clemensia mourning and snow not rlly giving a fuck, but clemenisa being the one saying “give me the bullet points” was strange. to me, i feel like the convo should have gone like: “how could gaul expect us to write that proposal i was crying over arcchane all night” “dw i already wrote it” “where did you find the time? i was too busy grieving” “do you want the bullet points or not?” or something. idk i’m not a movie writer

12. why did clemensia stick her hands in there maybe it was the same in the book but at that point she just needed to admit defeat

13. okay one thing i DO remember about the book is that no one at the cornocupia fought each other, reaper was literally the only one ready to fight. that kinda pissed me off bc i feel like they could have made it interesting in a emotional way (like showing how desperate the tributes are to escape in their own ways) instead of an action sort of way (bc GODDAMN where did they learn to brawl like that?? d4 makes sense but some of them were shooting ARROWS katniss everdeen style). but again im not a movie person so “interesting in an emotional way” is just me being pretentious

14. wovey </3. i’m not rlly sure why they had dill drink the water i think having wovey drink it like in the book would have packed more of a punch ESPECIALLY since lucy gray makes a comment abt how she reminds her of maude ivory / that scene where wovey holds her hand. maybe that was in the book too tho i’m not sure i haven’t read it since it came out. one change that i did remember AND tolerated was snow being the one to cause the whole fuck up w the drones “i wasn’t attacking the other tributes—i was just sending her water” VERY good scene, gave more insight to his character imo. like yes i would have loved a d3 moment but i think this tweak not only made sense but made everything much more nice and neat and smooth

15. okay the singing parts. loved the reaping, but lucy gray constantly being like “give me a second, boys” “let’s go, boys” reminded me of that one delaney video

16. “you can kiss my ass!!!!!!” she ate that

17. also oooo the song she sang abt billy taupe that made snow jealousssss. she was so good like ugh. idk something abt the >:( faces she made ignited something in me. which is exactly the point of lucy gray and rachel zegler literally did such a fantastic job playing maria in west side story so tbh what we were expecting if anyone could have played this role it was her

18. and then lawrence whatever saying this was a love story… okay. i’ve always had the opinion that lucy gray genuinely liked snow (like in a stockholm-y way) BUT snow was too blinded by control to actually love her back, so i could see where he was coming from. with that being said, i feel like in the books snow had a lot more moments where he was doing / saying “sweet” things to lucy gray, so the scene where they almost kissed and then her happiness at being reunited with him just seemed so awkward and out of place. like i get it they truly did not spend that much time together but the kiss before the arena was so important idk why they left it out. when they kissed after being reunited and when she was like :D after seeing him in 12 i was like “uhh yall don’t even know each other like that calm down”

19. let’s go back the arena. i like the little nod of lucy gray killing treech w rat poison, even if it was kinda anticlimactic

20. speaking of anticlimatic… the ending? sucked. like it would have been abrupt either way and maybe i’m just misremembering but the lucy gray showdown with treech could have been the action scene that replaced the bloodbath (bc the bloodbath didn’t exist back then!!! that was the whole point!!!). also i don’t remember gaul being so adamant about not wanting a victor at all, but i understand why they did that bc how else would they have incorporated the “get her out” chant

21. there were a lot of scenes that made me go “ohhh i wanna remember this forever that’s so good and clever.” of course i forgot abt most of it by the time the movie was over, but one scene that stuck out to me was when the capitol students got rlly fuckin angry when reaper tore down their flag

22. also i knew what happened to marcus but tell me why i gasped when i saw him hanging there anyway

23. i don’t remember lamina crying in the books??? also don’t understand why snow was against the alliance here i think him being confused abt it in the book was better bc i when i read it i remember being genuinely surprised that he was surprised that lucy gray wanted to team up w someone i was like ummm isn’t that common sense

24. “it isn’t fair i killed all those ppl for nothing.” GOOSEBUMPS

25. again maybe i’m misremembering but didn’t snow beat the shit out of bobbin even after he already knew he was dead?? even if that wasn’t the case and i’m just misremembering i feel like they should have drawn that out more to show snows descent into Psychotic Bitch Mode

26. that scene where billy taupe was pulling at lucy grays skirt and being like “ik u missed me” dragged out for WAY too long, esp since lucy gray kept repeating “get off me, billy taupe. get off me” like WAY too calmly given the context of the situation. again im not a movie person AT ALL, but i think her snapping and kicking billy taupe away could have been a nod to how she bit his hand in the book. then, after she kicked him, snow could have arrived and started being the shit out of him. idk her biting billy taupe was something snow mentioned when he was justifying how he was gonna kill her, so idk. i thought they were gonna do a ranting sequence / flashback scenes with snow remembering how lucy gray was “violent” / “dangerous” that would trigger him (no pun intended) to actually start shooting. like him beating up billy taupe for a longer time than he needed to was also an indicator that he’s in Psychotic Bitch Mode, but i feel like it could have been a 2-in-1. if that makes sense

27. why did billy taupe push mayfair in the TITS. go to hell

28. said it before and i’ll say it again: lucy gray is a fashion icon. i wanna crochet her bathing suit so bad

29. that scene where they were going to the woods and snow was slapping away the mosquito omg. he was PISSED

30. “it’s a mystery. just like me” oh my fucking god i love rachel zeglers portrayal of lucy gray

31. also call me classist but i fucking hate country music but rachel zeglers performances might have converted me. “cant take my paaaaaast” yee yee!

32. okay. so i think a big question was if snow was portrayed as properly slimy and ratworthy to ppl who did NOT read the books. in my opinion, i don’t think so. in the books, you can obviously tell he’s fucking awful. in the movies, he’s obviously shitty too, but i feel like there are moments where he’s portrayed way kinder than he actually is, like when he started crying over sejanus. they kept in a lot of stuff he said sympathizing w the tributes (like the part in the book where he was like “how could they punish marcus for trying to escape from certain death?” BUT they DID leave out parts that made him so intolerable, like when he genuinely convinced himself that lucy gray was more capitol than district / his gross thoughts abt the games and control and possessiveness in general. like remember when he said that having lucy gray locked up in the capitol was a better alternative than her being in d12 bc at least he’d know where she was at all times?? or when he was ready to give up on trying to reunite w her bc it was hot asf and SENJAUS had to be the one to convince him to keep going? wtf

33. ALSO something that bugged the hell out of me is sejanus’ death scene. bc in the book his last words were ma BUT in the movie it sounded so much like he said pa. idk if that was just me tho but it caught me so off guard bc this man has DADDY ISSUES and it would be so different if he said pa. Pa is money and wealth, Ma is comfort and compassion. wanting his dad = he rlly just wanted his dad to bail him out. wanting his ma = wanting comfort and stability. but it sounded a lot more like ma when the jabberjays repeated everything back so maybe i just misheard

34. snow glaring at the rainbow fucking sent me i know his ass was brainstorming (no pun intended) on how to control the fucking weather

35. okay sorry i need to talk more about how snow was portrayed. my sister went w me but i did not know that she didn’t know ANYTHING about the movie, she was just coming w me bc she felt bad that i’d have to wait another week to watch it and decided that she wasn’t even gonna read a summary abt it. like she did not know that coriolanus snow = president snow, but i was still hoping that she knew that he was a bad person. nope. as soon as we left, she told me how much she hated the ending, and i thought it was bc she was pissed no one found out about snow. nope again. in her words, “i thought they’d get married”

my live reaction to that information

to be fair, when i was her age, i thought heathers was a love story, so i had to cut her some slack. after a bit of INTERROGATION, this is what she told me:

1. at least she thought that HE’D move in with HER, and not the other way around

2. what would be his motivation for moving to the districts? cos obviously he hated the capitol

okay me when i write a lucy gray / sejanus fanfiction. but still. if that’s what she got from the portrayal of his character, i think it’s safe to say that they could have done a lot more work to ensure that he was perfectly ratworthy to the audience. like yes she’s young and yes she had no idea what the fuck was going on (in her words: “yeah i was like ‘i’ll just ask u to explain it to me after’”) but i feel like knowing that he’s an awful person who hates the district should be something u make GLARINGLY obvious, even if it would be cheesy. i know that shoving a hot person on screen and downplaying their characters HEINOUS crimes is rlly common when it comes to things like this, but i genuinely don’t think that was (quite) the case here. like he had the potential of being as horrible as he is in the book (not even hesitating to send the jabberyjay recording of sejanus to the capitol, telling sejanus he only said all that shit abt changing the world bc he just wanted to save his own ass) but it just.. felt very half-assed. in my opinion

36. look i know this post is already xtremely long but would u believe me if i said there were more things i wanted to talk abt but can’t remember bc i have goldfish memory?? bc i do. but that’s all i can remmeber for now. goodnight and goodbye

Agape. Unconditional love. Like God's love, or a parent's. Infinite, self-sacrificing, uncalculated.

English and Japanese dubs seem to have a difference of opinion on whether Victor's internal monologue about agape mentions parents or only God. We all love pointing out that the visuals accompanying the previous line of monologue point out Yuuri's love as unconditional, something which is going over Yurio's head—

—but one really plausible interpretation of Victor's character is that he hasn't had unconditional love until he met the Katsukis. Maybe hasn't even seen it in action. Maybe Victor didn't have parents, really; unless we count Yakov and Lilia (which I do), but Yakov at least is for obvious reasons very invested in Victor's professional pursuit of perfection, exactly as Yakov and Lilia both are for Yurio. And maybe Victor's parents made clear, if perhaps unintentionally, that their love was contingent on his being good enough.

Which is not really an interpretation the English dub supports. Just the Japanese dub.

On that note, how come I've seen more fanworks exploring Victor as Catholic than Victor as Russian Orthodox?

A. Okay, I will give it a solid 9. The only reason it isn't a 10 is because I wish there was more of it and there are some more scenes I wanted to see. Other than that, pretty much a perfect book-to-screen adaptation!

Things I Liked:

The cast! Pretty much perfect casting all around. Tom, Rachel and Josh absolutely ate up their roles, and I'm gonna be disappointed if I don't see Oscar nominations for those three. But I'm biased 😉

Also Viola, Hunter and Peter!!

Jason Schwartzmann was excellent as Lucky Flickerman. His comedic timing? Perfect.

THE TRIBUTES!!! Every single one of them was portrayed so well, and big ups to Dimitri Abold and Irene Boehm for their portrayals of Reaper and Lamina respectively. Mackenzie Lansing as Coral was so so good, the way she portrayed Coral's depth and nuance as a character was excellent.

Nick Benson and Sofia Sanchez broke my hearts as Jessup and Wovey.

The score! James Newton Howard knows how to craft a narrative using just music, and the parallels by using elements from prior pieces of the score was just *chef's kiss*. Yuja Wang's solos are so beautiful!! "Victor" in particular is simply perfect.

THAT twist with Felix Ravinstill. Frankly, excellent choice and very very topical.

I think all of us could do with taking some very important lessons away from this movie.

Things I Didn't Like:

Lack of mentor content. I wish we saw more of them!

Lack of snowbaird content. And not just as a shipper, but also as a narrative device. Their relationship is the crux of acts II and III, and I feel like we could've used all of it to really drive home the scale of Coriolanus' change and betrayal.

They really should have kept the 4-hour long cut. Francis Lawrence release the 4 hour cut!! I want that extra hour of footage now!!

B. Okay, as far as differences go, I didn't mind them! I actually really liked some of the switches, as I feel like it compensated for the lack of Coriolanus' internal monologue.

I do feel like some things were sacrificed for time (like the depth of Coriolanus and Lucy Gray's relationship, Coriolanus' relationship with Sejanus and the Plinths) but Tom and Rachel made up for that with their stellar acting, and Josh Andres Rivera KILLED IT as Sejanus. Whatever I didn't see explicitly, Josh made up for it with his acting choices.

this year i've done a LOT of art i'm really proud of, some months i drew more than others so it was hard to choose XD. i tried to stick to personal art for this but a commission snuck in there in february!

i love how victor's shame manifests through his secrecy... telling elizabeth that he will tell her everything after the wedding when through his internal monologue we see he fully expects to die that night. it's an empty promise, because he cannot bear the thought of her (or anyone) thinking less of him for what he had done. his guilt and shame are so overpowering he'd rather go to the grave in silence then tell another soul and face the possibility of them rejecting him or blaming him for everything that happened, especially the people that matter the most

Liam Evans Main Story: Chapter 1

If I'm understanding the story correctly, Liam tends to have an internal monologue. He hears someone talking to him, and he'll respond to their words through his thoughts. It could also be that he has some hallucinations. But anyways, when the voice is talking to him, their lines will be written in bold to show the difference. Liam's thoughts / response to the voice will be in italics (like this). This will apply to all of Liam's stories.

Under the dazzling spotlight, he received the rounds of applause and cheering that resonated through the theatre.

The audience's eyes were so filled with emotion, it was as if they were reaching for the brightest star in the sky.

[Liam's POV]

Liam: Thank you all for coming to our theatre tonight!

(I’m back to being me again.)

The magical feeling of living as that role faded away, and everything was back to reality.

A cold feeling radiating in my heart as reality was thrust before my eyes.

Hey, Liam. These cheers aren't meant for you.

These passionate, starstruck eyes aren't directed at “you”.

(Yeah. I know.)

That’s right. So, what is it you have to do now?

(... Work harder.)

(I’ll work harder and harder. It's okay, I know what I’m doing.)

(Or else, I…)

Ahaha. Correct, Liam. Good job, perfect score.

[Kate's POV]

After I was brought to Crown’s castle, I only managed to catch a few winks of light sleep before morning came.

Sitting on the bed in a room still unfamiliar to me, I thought back to the words I heard last night.

– Flashback Start –

William: There is an imperial organisation under direct command of Her Majesty Queen Victoria, all of its members are “cursed ones”.

William: — And that’s us, “Crown”.

William: We take on shady tasks ranging from spying to assassinations. In other words, the dirty work that the police or military can’t do.

– Flashback End –

(“Fighting evil with evil” for the sake of England’s prosperity.)

(That is Crown’s duty… as I was told.)

I spent a whole night here, and yet there were still so many things I didn't understand.

But there was one thing that was clear to me.

It was that I had “found out about a forbidden secret”.

A secret that nearly cost me my life.

(If I want to return to my normal life, I have to fulfil my role as a “fairytale master” for one month.)

While I “recorded”, Crown would be “watching” me.

(They’ll let me go once they can believe that I’m trustworthy enough to keep their secret.)

I looked at the jet-black typewriter on my desk.

I chose to work as a postwoman because I enjoy seeing the moment people's hearts are touched.

A few months ago, I started practising to use a typewriter, in hopes that I could one day help others write their letters.

(I never expected to end up using that skill to save my own life.)

(I wonder what kind of stories I will be writing as a fairytale writer.)

That evening, William invited me to go on a mission with him.

William: Victor said “Kate’s first partner should be William”.

Alfons: As usual. That's our overprotective aide to the Queen for you.

Kate: Alfons, will you be joining for the mission too?

Alfons: Yes, it’s my honour to be present for your first time. Let’s enjoy your first mission together.

Kate: I’ll try my best to not get in anyone's way. I look forward to your guidance.

At the same moment I suppressed my feelings of anxiety and bowed my head—

???: Hey, hey, are you going on a mission?

(...?)

A sweet vanilla scent that could drive a person crazy wafted through the air as his rose coloured hair swayed.

Liam: And Kate’s going? Wow, then I want to come along too!

Kate: Liam-san…

Liam: Uh-uh, not “Liam-san”. Just Liam. We’re friends… right?

Kate: Wah…!

With cat-like movements, he linked his hand with mine, and I caught an even stronger waft of that sweet smell.

Liam: Hey, Will. Can I go too?

William: Do whatever you want.

William: — But I just want to say, judging from that script you're holding in your hand, aren't you rehearsing for a play?

Liam shrugged his shoulders like a child getting caught for mischief, and I heard him mutter “too bad” under his breath.

Liam: Kate, are you scared to go on the mission? Will you be alright?

(... I’d be lying if I said I’m not scared.)

I refrained from saying anything that would increase my fear.

Kate: Thanks for worrying about me. But I’m really fine. I’m tougher than I look.

Liam: Ahaha, really? Even so, be careful not to get hurt.

William: Now, let’s get going. Kate and Alfons.

Kate: Okay…!

We took a carriage through the dense forest and arrived at the gate of a mansion seemingly belonging to an aristocrat.

…

Kate: Erm, is it really fine for us to enter without permission?

William • Alfons: It’s wrong, right? // We shouldn't.

(Huh?)

Servant: Who’s there!

Alfons: Speak of the devil. Here comes the guard.

William: Alfons.

Alfons removed his leather gloves in a bewitching gesture and stroked the nape of the guard’s neck with his fingers—

Servant: Hm? Are you done serving our master? You maids better work harder than you’re paid to.

Alfons: Yes, yes, that's right.

In that servant’s eyes, the three of us appeared as maids and not strangers.

(... What is this?)

Alfons: I can temporarily alter someone’s memories. A very convenient ability, don't you think?

(Oh right, every curse has its own “ ability”.)

The night I first met Crown, William used his ability to make me “obey his every command”.

William: Come on, let’s hurry. Our target is waiting for us.

When we pushed open the heavy door and entered the room, the mansion’s owner seated at the dinner table rolled his eyes.

Mansion Owner: W-Who are you…

William: Good evening.

William: I’m your friend who wrote to you saying “let’s talk in person tonight, just the two of us”.

William: How could you forget about that?

He was tricked — the blood drained from the mansion owner’s face when it hit him.

Mansion Owner: Hey! Someone come! Anyone…

William: “Shut up and stop moving. Answer my question with honesty.”

Mansion Owner: …!

William walked gracefully around the owner, who sat motionless on the chair.

William: “Golden Butterfly” — do you know anything about it?

Owner Mansion: I don't know… I really don't…!

William: Hmm? Is that so…

William: In that case, you’ve “served your purpose”.

William picked up a knife from the dining table and handed it to the owner—

William: “Slit your throat with that knife. Be quick about it.”

(...!)

In the blink of an eye, my vision was painted red.

My heart pounded at the sight of the disastrous scene in front of me — my heart was raging.

(I…)

(... I didn't expect…)

Kate: … Why?

Kate: … Why… did you have to take his life?

William: This man offered an investment opportunity to an aristocrat at a salon. He told him that he had an excellent deal for him.

William: With the money he made from those “investments”, he involved himself in human trafficking.

Kate: … Oh my gosh.

Alfons: While claiming them to be investments, the money was used on such shady business. And the mastermind behind all that… is this gentleman right here.

William: After his first strike, Her Majesty the Queen had her eyes on him. But he committed the same crime a second time, so I took matters into my own hands.

William: It’s easy to imagine the number of victims who will end up dead if this man were to be kept alive, no?

(So that’s why you beheaded him. Like removing a flower with rotten roots…)

William: Kate.

William: I’m not going to say that what we did was the right thing. No matter what the reason is, the act of taking a life can never be justified.

He narrowed his blood red eyes as he saw through my confusion.

William: Now, how do you intend to write about this as a fairytale writer?

Upon returning to the castle from the bloody mission, I sat in a corner of my room with the lights still turned off.

…

(Maybe I… I didn't understand Crown’s resolution at all.)

They accepted their own evilness, and are fighting it with evil.

— In the pitch darkness.

I was the only person at the scene who was unprepared for the situation, so I couldn't give an immediate response.

The maid brought me dinner, but I couldn't bring myself to even touch it.

My eyes were downcast as I questioned how I was going live in this place from tomorrow onwards, and that's when—

???: Hey. You’re not going to eat that?

(Huh…?)

(I’m sure I just heard someone’s voice.)

I looked around my room, but saw that I was the only one there.

Suddenly, Liam appeared out of nowhere, similar to how the Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland appeared.

Kate: Wah…!

Liam: Wah! I’m so sorry. I didn't mean to surprise you.

Liam: I was worried about you, so I snuck into your room.

Kate: How did you do that…

Liam: I can become “invisible to the human eye”. In other words, I have the ability to make myself disappear.

Kate: Are you saying that you used that ability and entered my room with the maid who brought me dinner…?

Liam: That’s my Kate. Spot on!

Liam: I planned to sneak back out after seeing you eat your dinner, but…

Liam glanced at my untouched dinner.

Kate: I’m sorry for causing you worry. … I’m pathetic, I know.

Kate: I was allowed to accompany them on the mission, and yet I couldn't say a word because I lacked the same amount of resolution they had.

(I shouldn't have said that. I’ll only make him worry about me even more.)

Kate: But tomorrow, I’ll start afresh.

When I turned to look at him with a smile, Liam touched my cheek with his finger.

(...?)

Liam: Hey, Kate. You don't have to force a smile when you don’t want to.

Liam: Forcing a smile is an act of kindness towards the people around you, but you’re not being kind to yourself, you know?

(...)

Liam: Still… I guess there are times you have to keep smiling. But, for now, it's alright to take a break.

Liam: Alrighty then. I’ll show you something good to reward you for your hard work.

Kate: Something good…?

Liam: Yup, it’s especially good. Let me see… Kate, I’ll borrow “this”.

He leapt onto my bed with swift movements like a cat’s—

The bedsheets fluttered beautifully in the moonlight.

Liam: Well, well, looks like there's only one audience member for tonight?

Liam: One is enough, though.

Liam: Now, as a stage actor and a member of Crown, I will put on a show just for you.

The moonlight softly framed Liam’s figure, he was the only one shining in the pitch dark night.

— He was like a star.

My feelings of depression were forgotten, and I could only stare at him in awe.

At that moment, for the first time ever, I felt like I was visually captivated by something.

Liam: … The name of tonight’s show is called “Don Quixote”.

Liam: It’s showtime! I’ll make you forget all about those frightening and unpleasant things.

Even now, I remember you as a star that fell from the sky without warning.

Also his internal monologue man, I love how he understands that he is posessive of Serena but that comes from all the anxiety he got from the result of losing every single person he loved because of Victor and Dustbin. He's not posessive because he's obsessed and doesn't trust Serena, he's posessive because he's already lost so much and is scared of losing her too.

okay so one of the changes made when the hunger games books were adapted into the films was something they did with cato—the scene on the cornucopia, where cato has peeta in a headlock, is quite possibly the most devious scene in the film, and the best change made (closely tied with the scene where haymitch convinces seneca crane to make the rule change)

in the novel, cato has one line; he warns katniss what happens if she fires an arrow at him, “shoot me and we [cato and peeta] both go down”. he smiles triumphantly and laughs a bit, and coupled with katniss’ internal monologue when she blows up their supplies, it adds to the idea that he’s not quite there, that he’s not totally sane

in the film, however…

Cato: Go on, shoot! And we’d both go down and you’d win. Go on. I’m dead anyway! I always was, right? I didn’t know that until now. Isn’t that what they [the Capitol audience] want, huh? No! I can still do this. I can still do this. One more kill. It’s the only thing I know how to do. Bring pride to my district. Not that it matters.

now whilst i love suzanne collins and she is a damn clever writer, i think in this case the movie did it better, because this little monologue makes cato go from a generic short-term villain (compared to the long-term villain of the capitol) to a complex and almost tragic character

in both the book and the movie, his death, which a lesser story might frame as a victorious moment for the heroes, is unsettling and tragic, but it’s done in different ways.

yes, he’s a volunteer, a career, but district 2, more so than the rest of panem, has been completely flooded with propaganda and treated more favourably. we see it more clearly in the third book, but the first two show us in part that district 2 is very much how the capitol wants it (and the other districts) to be; it’s completely brainwashed. unlike 12, 11, etc, there’s not such a lack of resources that widespread (but low-level so as not to result in punishment) resentment fosters within the general population. 12 in particular is governed much more loosely, and people have greater freedom because of it. but in 2 the majority of the population is totally loyal, unquestioning, and caught up in the idea that the capitol really is generous and the games really are a glorious opportunity

in the film he’s 18, in the book he’s 16. that makes him, fundamentally a kid. he’s a kid who’s been brainwashed, who hasn’t had the chance to think for himself if maybe the capitol isn’t all that great, who has been fed nothing but heaps and heaps of propaganda, in a district that pretty much buys it wholesale, so he would have likely not come across anyone like, say, gale, whose personal hardships (and to some extent the less strict government) gave him the opportunity to question the capitol and think for himself

I’m not saying he’s totally innocent, obviously–there’s parts in both versions where he shows genuine amusement in hunting and killing his fellow tributes, and only when he’s on the other end of the weapon does he realise that no, this actually isn’t a game.

in the middle of the night, surrounded by vicious attack dogs, knowing that he’s going to die no matter what, cato finally understands what the games really are. terror and subjugation. much like a ww1 soldier having romanticised ideas of war and glory, only to be met with the miserable, awful reality of the trenches, he has bought into the government’s propaganda at the cost of his life, and even worse, his humanity. he’s a kid who never had the chance to think for himself, to be anything other than a tribute, a killer. killing is the only thing he knows how to do.

it is what he has been trained to do his whole life, in the academy for the career tributes, he has been told that he can rise above his life as slave to the capitol and bring pride to his district. but ultimately, it doesn’t matter. whether he dies or becomes a victor he’ll just be a piece in the capitol’s games, he’ll just be another slave. he’ll only one step above district 2′s population, just like they’re only one step above all the other districts. he’ll still be far below the capitol, the people who made him this way.
