William Kentridge Drawing 'Large Typewriters' Sets Auction Record
On Wednesday, a large-scale drawing by William Kentridge sold for £682,750 ($935,000) at an auction in London, setting a new record for a drawing by the South African artist.
Large Typerwriters (2003), a diptych made using charcoal and pastel, depicts two vintage typewriters. 5 bidders competed for the work during a contemporary art sale at Bonhams in London, where it was estimated at £350,000–£550,000 ($480,000–$755,000). It went to a buyer in Asia.
The result surpasses the last record for a Kentridge drawing set at auction, when his 1988 pencil, chalk, and charcoal work on paper titled The Pool sold at Sotheby’s London in June 2019 for $566,700. The price in Bonhams sale also makes Large Typerwriters the second-most expensive work by Kentridge to ever sell at auction, next to his 25-part bronze piece Procession (in 25 parts), sold at Sotheby’s New York in 2013 for $1.5 million, against an estimate of $300,000.
Large Typewriters features one of the recurring motifs in Kentridge’s oeuvre, which comprises mainly black and white drawings. Ralph Taylor, Bonhams global head of postwar and contemporary art, said in a statement that the drawing is “a perfect example of Kentridge’s practice.”
This is the first time the work has ever appeared at auction. Before the seller acquired it, it was in the art collection of the Melbourne-based oil and gas company BHP Billiton. Much of BHP’s collection, which focused on works by South African artists, was sold off in 2003 at Christie’s.
Bonham’s 30-lot contemporary sale made a total of £4 million ($5.5 million), realizing an 87 percent sell-through rate. Other highlights from the sale include Banksy’s Girl With Ice Cream on Palette (2004), which sold for £1.1 million ($1.5 million); Kenneth Noland’s late-career painting Return (1970), sold for £231,500 ($316,900); and Sturtevant’s Study for Warhol’s Marilyn (1965), which went for £206,500 ($282,700).

Got some new revised muses for ya’ll !! c:
Tumblr media
Hennavi “Henna” Avery. Female. 30. Pan/Demi. FC: Zendaya The first thing Henna remembers is opening her eyes, finding her hands on the steering wheel of a car, driving through the desert. She doesn’t know where she is going. There is a vintage camera, typerwriter, & scattered papers in her passanger seat. She does not know anything about herself, nor does she have any memories to reflect upon. A man & a woman are sitting in the backseat, but they flicker like dying lightbulbs. They do not speak, but their presence seems to provide her the information she needs to understand her situation. She is an investigative journalist, & a private detective with a psychic gift. Years later she still doesn’t know how she came to be on that desert road, or why she forgot everything that had happened before, but she knows it set her on a path of mystery.

Bekarian “Beck” Rosfaule. Masc NB. 36. Bi. FC: Rami Malek Beck is the son of Arnest Rosfaule, a famed ambassador & politician. He grew up as “the ambassador’s son”, constantly moving, never without a chaperone or security detail. Yet, he was his own person too, an artist, an actor. Beck was a good student & a good son. Even as he got older he stayed close his father, & that was how he met Amyn, one of the many rotating faces of Arnest’s bodyguards. His father pushed them together, always reminding his son that you’ll need someone to look out for you when I’m gone. & he loved Amyn, he did. But then, his father died, & suddenly he was “the son of the dead ambassador”. So he left that life behind, & went to spend his life with Amyn, though still harboring his father’s secret, a secret that was now his own: his ancestors had been followers of Anubis, warriors that were sworn servants & protectors of his sanctity. & now, all these years later, his family was still bound to that loyalty, & when Beck’s father had died he had passed his title on to his son, naming him an heir of Anubis, presenting him with the responsibility of maintaining the promise his ancestors had once made to the goc. & thus, he took up the mantle, becoming Jackyl, a warrior of the hidden world of Egyptian mythology & magic.

Amyntas “Amyn” Andreas. Male. 32. Homo. FC: Chris Evans Amyn was born & raised on military bases, both of his parents being in the armed forces, & most of his ancestors before him. So, of course, he followed in their footsteps & joined the Marines, becoming another chain in his family’s legacy as soldiers. Amyn was a good soldier too, earning his fair share of honors & medals, proving himself time & time again, claiming every rank one by one. Then, one faithful day, he was put on the security detail of ambassador Rosfaule, & met his son, Beck, his future boyfriend & fiance. At first things were awkward between them, but as Beck’s father learned of their budding relationship he supported them, giving Amyn the courage to make a move. & he did, & Beck seemed happy for the first time since he’d met him. Then, Ambassador Rosfaule passed away suddenly, & Amyn was given a new position elsewhere. Yet, to his surprise, Beck followed him, & so they officially became an item, moving in together, making a life together. The two of them, against the world. Except, Amyn had his own secret: he was a god, reborn. Once he had been an ancient deity of war & hunting, but as times changed his followers thinned, until he was completely forgotten by history & mythology. Amyn is just his latest reincarnation.

Mordecai Kohle. Male. 39. Pan. FC: Zach Mcgowan Mordecai was born & raised in a modern cult, & it was the only life he knew until the day he began to question it. Then, before he’d decided much of anything about the cult, he was thrust out into the world & cut off from his family, from the life he had known. So he went into the military to keep himself occupied, replacing the rules of the cult with the structure of the army. He proved himself, adapted, came ot understand the world he was a part of, & finally managed to get over his past, leave it behind. When he left the military he was offered an internal job with the government, & without anywhere else to go took it. Now he’s part of a private taskforce responsible for dealing with terrorist cells, splinter groups, private militaries, &, funnily enough, domestic cults.
