The Russo Brothers Don't Believe In "Super Hero Fatigue"
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has certainly seen better days. Just five years ago, each film was almost a guaranteed billion-dollar smash for Disney and Marvel Studios. Now, in an era where the entertainment industry has been oversaturated by steaming, people seem less and less interested in the franchise. In the early days of Disney+, shows like Loki and The Falcon and The Winter Solder were must…

5 Indian watch brands that you must look out for in 2022.
Wearing a smartwatch on your wrist will always be in style. Your style and accessories say a lot about who you are. In today's society, we must present a positive image to succeed professionally, particularly for those working in the marketing, sales, and related industries. People frequently opt for high-end brands when purchasing elegant and fashionable timepieces. Many of India's top watch companies for 2022 produce enticing, aspirational watches.
When it comes to timepieces, we Indians are pretty discerning and intelligent. Everybody wants a worthwhile purchase. Because of this, we frequently struggle to choose the top watch companies in India. Every brand has a distinctive look and appeal of its own. Therefore, we are giving you the list of top watch brands made in India for 2022 to assist your purchases.
Here is a list of the top watch brands in India in 2022.
Choosing the ideal watch might be difficult because so many different watch brands are on the market. Even if you've been researching the best watch brands online, it can be challenging to pick the right one. So your search is over right here. Let's look at our ranking of the top watch companies in India for 2022 for both men and women. We have brands that are both pricey and luxurious on this list.
Titan Autumn-winter 19 Analog.
Titan Autumn-Winter 19 Analogue is a fantastic jewel because of its simple dial look, which I find engaging and drawn at. The watch has a date window on the dial face and is water-resistant to a depth of 50 meters. Furthermore, this watch outperforms similarly priced and more expensive timepieces based on aesthetics.
It comes in a luxurious box, which makes presenting it as a gift a great idea. If you appreciate leather watches, don't look back—this watch is for you!
 Janata HMT watches.
For a good reason, the Janata is HMT's most famous, iconic, and endearing watch. In Hindi, "Janata" is the word for "public"; hence the Janata watch was created as a  tribute to the Indian people. The Janata is a fundamental watch at its core. It is driven by a manual winding, 17 jewel movement, and features a slim 35mm case approximately 11mm thick (including the domed crystal). The movement is where the crucial Citizen technology transfer took place. Citizen's 0201 calibers were modified to become HMT's 0231 hand-winding movements, which featured the 'Parashock' shock protection mechanism from the Japanese watchmaker. For this reason, the dial of hand-winding HMT watches states, "Parashock 17 Jewels."
Filigree watch(Jaipur).
Filigree is a delicate embellishment in which skilled jewellers painstakingly solder fine, pliable threads of precious metal, which are then twisted or curled into a beautiful artistic motif or design of the jewellery, or in this case, the 'Filigree Wristwear.' Housing a genuine One Anna Coin from the King George VI era with 12 sides makes it a perfect fit for a watch.
Horizons blue fume dial - Bangalore.
The Horizon's blue fumé dial is rare. You'll find yourself regularly checking the interior of this dial. This matte fumé pattern of this watch has a deep blue base colour that transitions to black as it gets closer to the edge. As a result, the dial exhibits exceptional light play in various lighting conditions, making for a delightful watch to wear.
The little case is inevitable. It is machined from a single block of Grade 2 Titanium and polished uniformly using micro-bead blasting to give it that cutting-edge appearance. The Apogee, which features a 100-meter water-tight case and a Swiss automatic movement, checks many boxes for a sporty, futuristic watch with an interesting backstory that is sure to create conversation in your group.
5. Ajwain Sholavaram Pulse.
The Ajwain Sholavaram Pulse, the first mechanical chronograph produced in India, is one of the brand's crown jewels. Named for the area of the same name that is 24 kilometers north of Chennai and contains India's first racetrack (1953). This watch has a 40 mm SS 316 case with an exhibition case back and Sapphire crystals on the front and rear. This watch also features a Seagull ST1901 mechanical hand-wound chronograph movement with 20 mm lugs. The dial colours available for this watch include Ivory for that vintage 1950s look, Black with Red Pulsometer, and Black with Blue Pulsometer.

365 Marvel Comics Paper Cut-Out SuperHeroes - One Hero, Every Day, All Year…
April 13th - The Winter Soldier
James Buchanan ‘Bucky’ Barnes was born in the 1920’s, the son of a career military family.  An accident left Bucky orphaned in his early adolescence and he managed to convince The Camp Lehigh Army training base to take him on as a ward.  Although originally seen as something of the camp’s mascot, it wasn’t long before Bucky began participating in military training and showed a remarkable aptitude for strategy, marksmanship and hand to hand combat.  Despite his young age, Bucky began specialized training with British Commandos under the tutelage of William Essart Fairbairn and Colonel Rex Applegate.  His skill became so impressive that he was selected for special covert assignments overseas prior to America’s official entry into the Second World War.
After Steve Rogers became Captain America, it was arranged for him and Bucky to become friends, and for Bucky to discover Rogers’ dual identity as Captain America.  It was not long before the two became partners in action with Bucky fulfilling some of the more gruesome aspects of war, such as tactical assassinations and sniper fire, so that Captain America could retain an unblemished symbol of virtue and honor among his fellow servicemen and the general public.
The behind the scenes arrangement of their partnership notwithstanding, Bucky and Steve became lifelong friends and their closeness and camaraderie helped them become an even more formidable asset to the Allied Forces.  Although he frequently wore a costume to match Captain America’s patriotic uniform, Bucky eschewed the use of a codename, sticking with his original nickname of ‘Bucky.’
Alongside Captain America, Bucky helped to form the specialized squad of super powered heroes who battled against many of the Axis Powers’ more fantastical threats.  British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill dubbed this specialized squad ‘The Invaders.’  Alongside The Invaders and similar teams, such as The Liberty Legion and The Young All Stars, Bucky waged war against all manner of threats, including The Red Skrull, Baron Zemo, Hydra and a host of other villainous menaces.
Bucky was believed to have been killed in action near the end of the war, blown up in an experimental jet plane designed by the evil Baron Zemo.  It was later revealed, however, that Bucky’s life was saved by the Russian general and war hero named Vasily Karpov.  Bucky was nursed back to health whist being brainwashed and made to see himself as a coldblooded and unflinching weapon of the Soviet State.  Bucky had lost his left arm in the explosion and had it replaced with an advanced bionic prosthetic.  Although he recalled no memories of his previous life, he retained his vast combat skills and quickly became the most proficient and deadly assassin of the Cold War era.  His existence was kept secret and, during those times he was not needed for a mission, he was kept in cryogenic stasis.  Few if any outside of Karpov new Bucky’s true identity and he was referred to solely as ‘The Winter Soldier.’
Over the next several decades The Winter Soldier would be dispatched to execute sanctions all across the globe.  The longer he remained out of stasis the more aspects of Bucky’s original self would return to the surface.  During one of these prolonged times out of stasis, Bucky aided in the training of the Black Widow assassins produced by The Red Room.  Bucky grew especially close with the young trainee, Natasha Romanoff, and the two became romantically involved.  Fearing that such a matter would compromise The Winter Solder’s efficacy, his handlers put an end to this affair and shortened the times in which Bucky was allowed to stay out of cryogenic stasis.
Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, The Winter Soldier fell into the hands of Karpov’s former protégé, General Aleksander Lukin.  Lukin broke away from the Russian military to establish the lucrative energy conglomerate, Kronas Oil Corporation, and utilized The Winter Soldier to neutralize competitors and garner greater influence, quickly establishing himself as one of the most powerful oligarchs of the former Soviet Union.
Hungry for still more power, Lukin used The Winter Soldier to try to obtain The Cosmic Cube.  This resulted in a conflict with Captain America who was able to determine the Soldier’s true identity and was stunned discover his long lost friend was somehow still alive.  Cap was eventually able to prevent Lukin from obtaining the cosmic cube.  Before destroying the cube, Cap used its awesome power to undo Bucky’s brainwashing and cause him to remember the entirety of his life.
It was a very difficult transition for Bucky.  Although he regained his old memories and personality, he was also forced to recall and remember all of the atrocities he was made to commit in his role as The Winter Soldier.  With the help of Cap, Natasha and Sam Wilson, Bucky was able to cope as best he could.  During this time Bucky and Natasha (now the Avenger known as The Black Widow) rekindled their romance together.
When Steve Rogers was apparently assassinated following the first superhero Civil War, Bucky found himself foisted into the position of wielding the shield as the new Captain America.  Although he felt himself a fraud unworthy to take Steve’s place, Bucky proved highly capable in the role, taking down foes such as Arnim Zola and The Grand Director and joining The Avengers in their defense of The Skrull’s Secret Invasion.  Bucky remained a member of The Avengers during their battles against Norman Osborn’s Dark Reign schemes.   Ultimately, he and The Avengers took on The Red Skull in an adventure that resulted in the resurrection of Steve Rogers.
Following Steve’s return, both he and Bucky briefly shared the mantle of Captain America.  Bucky fell in battle during the Fear Itself event, yet was revived thanks to a transfusion of the Infinity Formula.  This elixir not only restored Bucky’s health but also augmented his physical abilities and diminished his aging process.  Afterward, he returned to the role of The Winter Soldier, acting as a secretive operative for SHIELD, The Avengers and, for a time, as the leader of a new Thunderbolts team.
Bucky/The Winter Soldier has featured prominently in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, portrayed by actor Sebastian Stan.  The hero first appeared in the pages of Captain America Comics #1 (1940).

(I had to repost this because it wasn’t showing up, sorry the ask is all weird now)
Hi!
despite the threatening sky and shuddering earth (they remained) is one of my favorite fics ever, and Adjustments is fantastic as well.
However, unfortunately these are some of the only fics that I know of with this exact premise. In this list I tried to include a combination of post-CATWS fics where Bucky is taken in, and some fics where the trauma from his experiences as the Winter Soldier are treated, and some where he is at first misunderstood. Hope some of these are what you meant!
Wheels Won't Turn by hansbekhart (Steve/Bucky, M, CNTW, 15K)
There was a reason that he ran, but he doesn’t remember anymore. He was on his way to the extraction - waiting for night to fall so that he could travel inconspicuously - crouched in a hollow on the roof of an old brick building - a warehouse, maybe - and the fading light - the light caught - on a blond head down below on the street. Laughter, and a cadence to the man’s speech that sounded familiar, misplaced R’s and blurry Th’s, quarter, water, this, that, the other one.
Idioglossia by hotelmichelle (Steve/Bucky, M, CNTW, 20K, Slice of Life, Codependency, Domestic Avengers)
“James and Steve. If I have to tell you one more time to stop talking, you will be separated. Do you understand?”
Bucky stares up at Mrs. Wheatley with the face that gets him out of trouble when his ma is in a good mood. Steve becomes suddenly fascinated with his correction work. It would have been convincing enough, if their papers weren’t blank.
Or: Steve and Bucky make up a secret language
The Ungraceful Art of Falling by buckyfuckybarnes (Steve/Bucky, E, CNTW, 149K, Slow Burn, WWII era)
Bucky Barnes was cold.
He felt like he’d been cold for months now; doing nothing but experiencing one unending chill after another. He’d been cold in England, and again in Italy, and again especially in Austria – both while he was kept in an underground cell, and when he was strapped without cover to the unforgiving metal of Zola’s lab table.
But Steve… Steve Rogers was sunshine. Everything about him was warm, from his crinkly-eyed smile to his white-hot rage. Steve was Coney Island on a summer’s day; lying back on high rooftops to watch fireworks on the 4th of July; drinking stolen whiskey in his parent’s living room…
Loving Steve was a fact – simple and plain, like breathing air or bleeding red; loving Steve was soldered into his skin like a tattoo – it buzzed in his brain like its own kind of high. It was a part of who he was.
**there must have been a moment where we could have said no by magdaliny (Steve/Bucky, M, V, 154K, WS era)
The Soldier remembers this: he wakes up in the snow.
**United States v. Barnes, 617 F. Supp. 2d 143 (D.D.C. 2015) by fallingvoices, radialarch, (Steve/Bucky, T, 20K, Media fic, Social Media)
The Associated Press @AP Winter Soldier set to stand trial for Washington D.C. mass*cre and treason apne.ws/1og6SWE
**tin soldiers by idrilka (Steve/Bucky, T, 19K, Media fic, Social Media, POV Outsider)
In his 2009 book on Captain America comic books, war photography, and American propaganda, Everett claims: “There is nothing to suggest that either the graphic novels issued during the war or the photographs taken during Rogers’ stay with the Howling Commandos can serve as a basis for a queer reading of Rogers and Barnes’ relationship. But even more importantly, there is nothing to suggest that such a relationship ever existed in the first place, and as such, those queer readings are not only misguided, but also libelous” (197).
[from: Lynn E. Anderson, Captain America: Behind the Mask. Steve Rogers and the Contemporary Hero Narrative (New York: Palgrave Macmillan, 2012), p. 242.]
In the aftermath of Steve's return to the world of the living and the battle of New York, the academia and the Internet react.
**Ipseity series by SkyisGray (Steve/Bucky, E, V, Non-Con, Dissociative Identity Disorder, WS era)
Even the strongest personalities, when subjected to great physical, emotional, and s*xual abuses, can splinter, or dissociate.
Bucky Barnes lives a nightmare after falling from a train and being recovered by Hydra. His mind deals with the trauma by splintering into the soldier, the prisoner, the patriot, and the assassin.Years later, they team up to save Steve Rogers.
Nameless by AvaKelly (Clint/Bucky, M, V, 101K, WS era, Tattoos, Past Meetings)
A gun is pointed at him before he can even move from his position, the Soldier's metal arm steady in its aim. Clint sighs.
"Nemo," Clint says. "It's tattooed on your wrist, right here," he lifts his right hand and taps his left index finger where his palm ends.
The Soldier's eyes widen. "How do you know this?"
"I put it there."
**Nobody Lost, Nobody Found by ClaraxBarton (Clint/Bucky, E, 108K, Soulmate AU, slow burn, BAMF Clint Barton)
"Look, dude, I get it. You’re fucked-up. HYDRA fucked you up. I’ve been there. But you’re my fucking Soul Mate!"
“I can kill you. I could kill you without even realizing what I was doing. I’m not fucked-up, I’m a monster. I’m a nightmare. You can’t be here. You can’t- All the people I’ve killed- I will not murder my Soul Mate too. Not after everything else I’ve-”
Clint worked his left hand between their bodies and managed to land a punch to the man’s right side, forcing him to shift his weight, and Clint brought his right hand down on the place where the man’s metal arm met his torso - hidden by the shirt he wore, but on full display in the video Clint had watched.
The man released Clint with a grunt of pain, and Clint pressed his advantage, landing another punch to his abdomen, backing him up against the opposite side of the RV and then pressing the kitchen knife he had pocketed while cleaning up earlier to the man’s throat.
“Like I said, I’m not a Boy Scout. I’m plenty dangerous myself. We clear on that?”
OR: This looks bad, because it is.
OR: How Clint Barton met his Soul Mate
**I'll Keep You Safe Here With Me. by sara_holmes (Clint/Bucky, M, CNTW, BAMF Clint Barton, PTSD)
Yes, Clint is avoiding the other Avengers. No, he does not want to go back to New York. But then again, he didn't exactly want to be kidnapped by the Winter Soldier either. Really, he just wants to go back to bed.

Out of curiosity what era of bucky (ie 1940, winter solder, howling commandos etc) do you think would fit with which era of zemo (ie eko scorpion, civil war zemo, tfatws zemo, young baron etc) the best? Also which version of each character is your favourite ( i know we haven't seen many versions of zemo)
I think EKO Scorpion Colonel Zemo would obliterate Howling Commandos Sergeant Bucky, and I would like to see that.
That being said, I think the Bucky and Zemo from FATWS are my favourite and go so well together. They'd have to be my favourite, it's because of them, I'm in this fandom to begin with and am now permanently haunting everyone like a little goblin who writes fic XD

FATWS Episode 4
I’m finally fucking getting time to watch this thing.
Dramatic reactions, incoherent ramblings and spoilers under the cut.
Right off the bat I’m feeling like the only thing I really remember about Episode Three is vaguely not trusting Sharon Carter. I’m really supposed to believe Peggy Carters Niecey, defender of Captain America and dismantler of Hydra really is selling stolen art in Madripoor? Seems fake, but okay.
Let’s get into it.
Have I mentioned I love Karli’s freckles? Her hair and her freckles kill me, I never understood people who don’t think freckles are cute. They are actual dots of delightfulness
AYOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO AYO AYO AYO She is so ridiculously beautiful wtf. I’m shaving my head TOMORROW so I can be half as amazing as her.
Wait is this a Wakanda flashback? Six years ago... ohhhh look at my goatherder Jesus Bucky, let that baby rest. WHY IS SHE SAYING THE WORDS? LOOK AT HIS EYES PLEASE STOP. This is hurting my soul. Oh god homecoming, and it’s the moment he knew Steve. Oh the tears, I can’t. I CAN’T. “You are free” I’m already crying and it’s been 1.2 minutes.
Damn right the White Man doesn’t understand anything of their loss and shame. LISTEN TO BUCKY SPEAK WAKANDAN. I LOVE IT. Urgh she’s so beautiful. Her murder strut is impeccable. I’m in love and I’m swoooooooning.
“It was sweet of you to defend me” Zemo take ten to twenty percent off the top there, This isn’t a date.
Hey, I feel like I don’t love that they refer to Karli as “Karli”. If she was a man, it would be Last Name Basis. “She’s a kid” “she’s a supremacist.” hmmm seeing a parallel between Wanda and Karli and the way they were treated. “She’s a kid?” She’s actually ridiculously powerful but thanks for that. (no Wanda hate here, just pointing it out)
“My TT” ITS HIS AUNTIE BUCKY YOU’D KNOW THIS IF YOU WERE EVER INVITED TO THE COOKOUT
Uh Zemo, maybe we don’t be the creepy guy in the coat offering children candy. I mean, the tactic worked but you could literally not be creepier right now.  Honestly I don’t know why I’m so surprised he’s keeping the Donya thing from them, duh he’s a villain, but I’m still surprised?? The sugar daddy role got me FOOLED
Sam being the one that understands what it means to be fighting to be on the other side of the “barbed wire fences” is so sad.
BUCKY’S MAD. Sam has something against head tilts, that’s so funny to me for some reason. I DON’T TRUST SHARON.
Why do I smell some foreshadowing with Karli’s talk about destroying the shield and how it’s a relic of a bygone era and a symbol of everyone that was left out
“take it easy before it gets weird” SAM.
John Walker literally looks more sketchy every time we see him. Also, if you can’t say “son, just don’t” and everyone stops in their tracks, you are NOT Captain America. Its worrying me that Battlestar (battleship? lmaoooo) is starting to side with BuckySam because if there’s one thing literally every movie has taught me, it’s that the person who switches sides ends up dead and if I have to watch a POC first be relegated to sidekick and then killed I might actually riot
It’s so good to see Sam being Counselor!Sam. I think that gets so overlooked with him and I think it’s one of the most defining traits of his character. He’s not just a soldier, he’s not just brave, he’s seen the loss and he knows the struggle and he chose to help others through it while also being equally willing to suit back up and save the world.
“Don’t patronize me” stop acting like a damn child. Why is John so twitchy, I don’t like it. OH is he really gonna say “this is easy for you, all this serum running through your veins” as if Bucky had a say in anything about in his life beyond Azzano.
GET HIM BITCH punch his raggedy ass!
Oh look at Bucky jumping, Winter Soldier, more like Winter Squirrel PARKOUR. Goddamn Zemo with his gun, oh no look at all that super soldier serum! I mean, you have to commend the guy for never wavering from his path. JOHN WALKER AND THE SERUM! It’s supposed to amplify what’s in your heart?? AND HE SUCKS OH NO.
The power broker texts her “little girl” that’s so gross.
“Separate them and kill Captain America” three months ago I would have howled at that line, now I’m like...meh.
Sam wouldn’t have taken the serum-- not surprising. He’s a good man all by himself. No serum needed. Have you seen those arms? Actual Cannons of Freedom and Justice. “What about bucky” I love that he’s thinking about Bucky. Someone please protect these boys.
Aw Bucky baby you’re not crazy. It’s funny to see him drink cos he definitely can’t get drunk. It’s the equivalent of some diva drinking a white wine spritzer.
WHY IS JOHN WALKER BACK.
THERE’S MY WOMEN OH MY GOD I HAVE NEVER BEEN MORE EXCITED IN MY LIFE. Do not shake her hand. John Walker, she will bite your hand off. Pointy Sticks, the Dora Milaje have jurisdiction wherever they want OMG HE TOUCHED HER omg. Look at Zemo sipping his drink LOOKING STRONG JOHN I CANNOT I CANNOT.
“Lets talk about this” Bucky is so calm. Bye bye Zemo. Oh GET it Sam with those fancy moves.
...what just happened with Bucky’s arm. what just happened. “James” oh man waht does that mean?! Has Wakanda left him? Has he dishonored Them? My brain is moving too fast for this.
I would like to have a moment of silence for John Walkers ego because he, a White Man (tm) and Solder (tm) and American (tm) just got his shit actually handed to him by a Black woman and he sat there and tried to more her “pointy stick” and couldn’t and then she full on did the shield kick thing while he sat on the ground and looked up at her and you know what? i think that’s very sexy of her, I will be watching this scene on repeat for the next hundred years wtf.
Also ALSO? This is it. This is the moment where The Man (tm) can’t handle being beat so he goes and does something stupid, this is it, isn’t it? The Man Pain he just can’t tolerate?
Oh my god Bucky’s face with his arm. I mean, it makes sense his arm would come off but to have himself literally disarmed (get it) in a fight is so... I mean it’s violating in a way, and its almost a betrayal as well but at the same time maaaaaaybe it’s a relief? Maybe its a relief to know he doesn’t always have to be a Soldier, he can take the arm off and just be Bucky??
Also I had to pause the show to write about this because my hand cramped up from trying to type too fast ughhh
Back into it
ARM PORN NOISES I LOVE THEM
Whats an El Chapo? Oh wait, I figured it out.
I love Lemar’s voice. He’s so confident talking about the serum but lets be perfectly honest, Karli Morgenthau and Steve Rogers are basically the same person a hundred years apart. If you don’t think Steve Rogers would have singlehandedly led a revolt against a world government he thought was wrong, you are 100% incorrect. Not that I think he wouldn’t have resorted to bombings etc, but also... that sort of life does awful things to people.
WHY IS SHE CALLING SARAH. “My world doesn’t matter to America” oh sweetheart, I feel that in my soul. Sarah knows who Sam is. She knows he’s not working for John Walker. This is the first time I’ve been anti-Karli. I know she’s desperate but you don’t threaten someones babies.
HEY LOOK THERE’S ME NOT TRUSTING SHARON AGAIN
It actually makes me angry to even see Walker carrying the shield like that. I’m aware it’s an overreaction, but your honor, I hate him.
...Lemar?
Don’t make me watch a POC die for some White Man’s story arc, don’t do that.
Oh. Shit.
Sam do something. SAM DO SOMETHING. HE’S NOT GOOD SAM!
My god do I love watching Bucky fight. Those Kicks of Vengeance will never get old. CAW CAW MOTHERFUCKER use them wings Sam.
Oh Hoskins is okay. Alright.
Bucky with the good knives, I LOVE HIM. The fight scenes are always so well coordinated in WS. We see you definitely not killing when you absolutely could.
OH FUCK HOSKINS WHAT THE FUCK I THOUGHT WE WEREN’T GOING TO DO THIS WHAT THE FUCK
...this makes me so mad wtf. We couldn’t have done this journey without pointlessly sacrificing a POC? No? Have to drag that trope out? Gonna make me watch another Black man be killed just so the White Guy can move his story forward.
oh shit Walker is MAD.
Fuck he just-- he just murdered someone with Steve’s shield. he just MURDERED SOMEONE WITH THE SHIELD AND EVERYONE WAS WATCHING.
And look at him, he feels no remorse. He feels perfectly justified. He is DARING them to say something to him. He is America (tm) brutally silencing protests and rebellions and taking his own issues out on people he feels disrespect him and you can’t tell him he’s wrong because he can justify every drop of blood by making it about how he felt “they beat me and they weren’t even super soldiers. they disobeyed me. they should have listened to me. they killed my friend.”
I keep hearing preserum Steve saying “I don’t like bullies” and then imagining him beating the shit out of Walker.
...That visual of the shield with blood on it... it’s so... shocking isn’t even the right word. Horrifying. Its horrifying.
I don’t even know what to say.
This episode was a whiplash. The writers of this series need to be commended. Also the stunt men and the fight choreographers. Fucking kudos, and now I need a stiff drink and a good cry because this episode took it OUT of me.

The Russian Ark
Tumblr media
The Russian Ark by Aleksandr Sokurov was surreal film that was shot in first person with no cuts and just a straight walkthrough the winter palace in St. Petersburg, Russia. The film was wonderful walkthrough of the whole palace. Exploring various rooms, their architecture, the artwork, and what people might have worn in those rooms in different time periods.
I thought it was an interesting choice to shoot this film in entirely in first person perspective. It’s more commonly seen in games then in films, so it was definitely an interesting choice. It allowed us the viewer to be the main character, the male ghost. Who’s just trying to cure his curiosity of the place since he has no memories of his death other then that it was apparently a really bad accident. Our protagonist is complete mystery other then that. Which probably helps us the viewer to just insert ourselves into easier for a more of an experience as we journey through the Winter palace with him. The farther we go in we meet a French aristocrat, who at first, I assumed was death. Mostly due to his intimidating presence, black clothes, and how outdated he seemed. Not going to lie the idea that Death was French did make me laugh a bit, but that wasn’t the case. Interesting concept to make him seem like death. But it might have been a red heiring and in reality, he’s similar to us. A ghost just walking through the palace. All though he seems to contradict himself almost, he mentioned in the beginning he had never been to Russia before and when asked by two Russians in a gallery how long has, he been here, he had said just an hour. But later on, he mentions being in Russia in his life. I could have been just confused but I also noticed the subtitles weren’t the greatest, so could have been that. I felt like he was also a way for the director to maybe have a character complain about things he disliked about Russia, but not be Russian. So, a way of complaining about the country, but using a foreigner to do it. As a means of saving face.
The film did confuse a lot with how certain periods would almost merge before becoming a new period. From what the wiki about this says, the first group of people we meet are in period costumes from the 19th century to attend a ball hosted by Emperor Alexander, then we move to the 18th century of actors in a play for Catherine the great. Then as we follow her out, we seem to go back to the 19th century costume people again. Then modern with the doctor and actor as they talked about the art and seemed to be at odds with the French aristocrat. Before arriving to a different period again, I’m not too certain about the time period, but we did meet two sailors from the WW2, so maybe a weird mash up? I’m not too positive. The film was a bit surreal and confusing at times at what era we had walked into.
22 minutes in was weird, as were walking past statues, our perspective seems to be warping as a harpsichord sound plays. This wasn’t the first time we’ve herd this sound before, the first being when we see Catherine watching the performers. It gives the films in those moments ominous like feeling. Something to wary of, the film uses sound to help create certain effects or to foreshadow almost. The second time we see Catherine the great when she seems older, I swore I herd a sound like a ship horn almost. That or he’ll have our eyes the protagonist say something that makes us wary as well. When were being shooed away by some solders, we go to hide in this area that seemed dark? The main character tells the aristocrat not to open the doors. We leads to a creepy dark room of frames, the lighting being dark, has a blue tint, something like in a horror film. He uses the lighting and the main character wariness to set in feat in the viewers. Not going to lie I thought we were being led to the room that Tsar Nicholas and his family were shot in. But instead to a man who was making his own coffin. Another moment that lighting was used to create a sense of wariness in the viewer was these three men looking over a throne and if it could restore. They were in suits, maybe world war 2? Definitely after the end of the Tsars, I wasn’t sure.
One of my favorite shots in this was long shot of us exiting the ball and see how grand the hallway and staircase was. I loved the symmetry shot of the large crowd in the hallway below us as we go down the stairs. Just the dozens archway of the hallway. Then once we reach the bottom floor and we look up at the at the stair we get a nice ground level shot, admiring more of the golden and white architecture of the staircase. Then the films end in a surreal way, but as walking toward a door with wind, and the sound of the sea with that same boat sound from earlier. Us finding the palace in the middle of the ocean. It was an odd feel that left confused, but it was an interesting experience. I loved how there were no cuts, just a straight up walkthrough of the palace, with interesting moments of us suddenly finding ourselves in different time periods, or a mashup of some colliding before transitioning to another. That and good use of acting, sound, lighting to help sit the emotion of the scene.

The other day, a friend of mine came across a Clint/Bucky fic, and we got to talking about the ship. I figured it was because they’re both snipers or because Clint/Natasha is a thing, and Bucky’s almost basically a dude-version of Natasha, so I guess it makes sense?
(This is almost purely MCU, by the way. I’m sure there’s more ammo for the ship in the comics.)
But anyway, it was like a scab; you can’t help but scratch it, and I’m a sucker for dynamics, so I kept scratching, and the more I thought about it, I figured, okay, they’ve both been mind-controlled by a hostile entity/organization and forced to fight against their allies/friends, so. I can see the appeal.
And then, my brain took a hard left turn, and I thought, you know what’d be interesting?
So. Steve/Bucky’s a huge ship, and I can see why, even if I’m not interested in it. But! It’d be interesting if they were a thing pre-war/pre-Serum/pre-torture. It’d be interesting if the people they became, both during the war and afterwards when they woke up in the modern era, were completely different people than they had been when they’d been together (which makes sense! and isn’t a bad thing!), but they keep trying to make their relationship work, especially Steve because he’s still (understandably) a little obsessed with the past.
Except they don’t love each other anymore, and what do you do with that? When the person you would’ve fought against the world for, and did fight against the world for if you use ship glasses for Civil War, isn’t the person you were fighting for anymore? When you’re not that person anymore for them? When the two of you have become so different from who you used to be that you don’t remember what it’s like to love them, to be the person they loved, no matter how hard you try, and you have to move on because staying together’s only making things worse, only highlighting what’s different, what’s changed, what’s wrong, and it’s ruining the bond you have? So you have to separate, it’s the only way to salvage what’s left.
And then, I thought, you know what? What about a post-Winter Soldier Bucky who just wants to be human, be himself, but he doesn’t know how else to be, so he just mimics the person history says he used to be (i.e., Steve’s best friend, a charmer, etc.), and he does it so well that no one notices him inching toward a breakdown. And of course, he doesn’t realize it because why would he? How would he know that pretending to be past!Bucky’s destroying the current him? That person’s Bucky, after all, and he’s supposed to be Bucky—he wants to be Bucky, wants to be anyone but the Solder and the only option he has is Bucky—so that’s the kind of person he should be.
I just thought it’d be neat if Steve wasn’t the only one obsessing over his past. :)
And then, I realized, you know what, those two ideas complement each other really fucking well, don’t they? You have a relationship that both Steve and Bucky are desperate to continue—Steve because he’s still traumatized as fuck and grieving over all that he’s lost in coming to the future, Bucky because he just wants to be human again and Bucky Barnes was in a relationship with Steve so of course he has to as well, he’s Bucky—but one that’s fundamentally really fucking bad for them both.
Because in Steve’s eyes, Bucky hasn’t changed at all. But he has. He isn’t the same person who Bucky loved, and he’s changed so much that he doesn’t even love Bucky anymore, and what’s wrong with him? This is everything he wanted, so why is it not working? He keeps getting frustrated and angry because he just wants this to work and then even more frustrated and angry because he’s frustrated and angry, and he shouldn’t be, this should be working.
He doesn’t realize that it can never work again because the relationship died the moment Bucky got shipped off to war and was held captive by Hydra.
And on Bucky’s side, you have him desperate to be who he used to be, and he’s trying so damn hard to pretend to be the same ol’ Bucky Barnes, even if it makes him, like, flinch, you know, to touch Steve sometimes because touch was only ever bad and painful; even if looking at Steve sometimes makes him feel like he’s becoming the Soldier again, like he’s back at Hydra, because of his conditioning.
And then Steve’s just. So frustrated and angry and unhappy all the time, so he must be doing something wrong, he’s not being Bucky Barnes good enough, so he tries harder, not knowing that he’s only making things worse both for Steve and for himself, that he’s only triggering himself. He’s further dehumanizing himself, not giving himself the chance to be human, to find out who he’s become, to cope, to heal, because why would he need to? He’s Bucky Barnes, right? So he must be X, Y, Z, like history and Steve and everyone keeps saying. There’s nothing to figure out, nothing to bounce back from, nothing.
Until it all culminates into a blowout fight where Steve realizes just how bad this relationship is for them. And it has to be Steve; Bucky would never have come to that realization himself. How can he when he’s so desperately clinging on to being Bucky Barnes that he doesn’t even realize that there’s a cost to himself? So it has to be Steve who has to end it. He doesn’t want to. He doesn’t want this to change like everything else or to lose it, but it’s either that or his best friend who’s killing his own soul to be the person he used to be for Steve. (Not just for Steve, but that’s the part that sticks.)
So he ends it.
Cue massive breakdowns because Steve wasn’t ready for the change and also the guilt of having forced Bucky into a relationship (he hadn’t, but he thinks it) and did he even love him? Was everything Bucky did something he did because Steve wanted him to, and he actually didn’t want to do any of it? Did he rape Bucky? (It’d probably be dubious consent at worst because identity issues, but that’s the part that sticks out, that snags the skin of his mind like jagged glass and tears.)
And then there’s Bucky and his identity crisis dialing up the wazoo because if even Steve didn’t want him—Steve who loved Bucky more than anyone, Steve who actually knew Bucky, “end of the line” Steve—then something was wrong with him. He didn’t try to be Bucky hard enough, good enough. Was he even Bucky? If even a good as guy as Steve didn’t want him, was there anything more to him than the Soldier?
This got very long, and my brain took so many turns, but just. The angst potential in this. I don’t have the energy or skill to write it and do it justice, but it’d be so interesting.

[WARNING: In-depth discussion of human remains along with relevant images, some of which may be disturbing.]
In the electric hustle of the mid-1980s, there weren’t many eyes turned toward the loneliest corners of the Canadian Arctic. It was a forward-momentum period, caught up the 20th century’s mach-speed technological progress and cultural change. In all of this movement, it took something quietly monumental to turn heads toward the past and look, quite literally, into its eyes. The world looked into three 140-year-old graves in permafrost, and found three sets of eyes wearily looking back.
Their names were John Torrington, John Hartnell, and William Braine. In Victorian society, they would have faded into the backdrop of the social tapestry. One was a working-class petty officer, another a former shoemaker that had recently joined the Navy, and the third a private in the Royal Marines. In their world, they were perfectly ordinary—but it was their deaths that made them extraordinary. In time, they would be called the Beechey Island or Franklin Expedition mummies, and would become instrumental in helping to solve one of the greatest mysteries in exploration history.
In this first Mummy Monday, we’ll explore the lives and deaths of the Beechey Island trio, as well as their forensic results, cultural impact, and a further look into their unique process of mummification.
Tumblr media
The Franklin Expedition
In international news, the Franklin Expedition has been something of a hot topic as of late. New artifacts, incredible discoveries, and potential vacation routes; not to mention a critically-acclaimed television series in 2018! Its impact is present in multiple facets, but it can be hard to gain a full scope of what it was and why it matters.
The quickest, dirtiest summary is this: in 1845, the British Admiralty sent two well-fitted bomb vessels—HMS Erebus and HMS Terror—into the Arctic to ply the waters for the fabled Northwest Passage. It got very, very cold to the point that the land was inescapable and all 129 men aboard succumbed to any number of horrible fates—disease, starvation, exposure, and possibly even more violent ends. Say what you will about ominous-sounding names for these ships and risking fate, but the results were horrifying across the board. Scottish explorer John Rae even made discoveries of cannibalism among the wreckage of what was to be the most promising of Her Majesty’s exploration attempts, much to the public’s disgust, chagrin, and fascination.
Tumblr media
There is, of course, so much more to the story than just a few quick notes about the horrors nature can inflict and the question of imperialistic hubris. One peek into the fae realm of Franklin-related academia is a little bit mind-boggling, and there have been plenty of glorious attempts to parse it all out. The sources range from contemporary to theoretical, and as much as people agree or disagree, the siren call of Frankliniana can be hard to resist.
So where the hell do you start?
For the sake of Mummy Monday, we’re starting where most of Franklin’s rescue attempts did:
Tumblr media
Beechey Island.
Beechey Island
It’s a forbidding corner of the Canadian Arctic, even today. Nestled at the foot of Devon Island in the Wellington Channel of modern-day Nunavut, it can appear either unremarkable or dread-inspiring, depending on the day and the weather. Its nearest inhabited neighbor is the town of Resolute, although its name in Inuktitut gives a better sense of the landscape: Qausuittuq or ‘the place with no dawn’.
Most explorers tracing the steps of Franklin stop in Resolute to charter passage to Beechey Island. Although there are animals living near the area (different species of sea bird and the iconic polar bear), the tourism sector of Beechey Island is profoundly dedicated to the quiet contemplation of the remains of Franklin’s first winter camp. Scattered across the stones are broken pieces of wood and rusted rings of old Goldner’s cans. To this day, it’s possible to see the ongoing decay of history in the shadow of memorials left behind by past searchers.
Tumblr media
And then there are the graves.
The original headboards are now stored at the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre in Yellowknife. Weather-resistant replacements still bear the same messages as the originals, each recalling the names, statuses, and death dates of three of Franklin’s men. Two graves, from Erebus, have ominous-sounding Bible verses tacked on to the epitaphs.
There is a fourth grave belonging to Thomas Morgan, an able-bodied seaman (AB) from the HMS North Star who died during a search for Franklin in 1854. Morgan is entombed alongside his Erebus and Terror predecessors, but he has not yet been exhumed.
And yeah, exhumations. That’s what we’re here for on Mummy Monday, after all!
In 1984, Dr. Owen Beattie of the University of Alberta led a crew of researchers and scientists to this lonely point in the Arctic Circle. At the time, he was entertaining the possibility of lead poisoning being a factor in the ultimate fate of the Expedition. Part of this consideration came from the bajillion cans littered across the extensive trail, each soldered shut with clumps of lead that Beattie believed leached into the food the men were eating. Beattie had good reason to pursue this theory! His belief was that the acidic nature of some of the canned food would have caused a breakdown in the lead solder, causing the food to become contaminated. Even without this theory, he wouldn’t have been off the mark at all. Later discoveries contemporary to the Expedition found other cans manufactured and sealed by Stephen Goldner to have gone completely rancid. That, outside of the lead-poisoning theory, certainly wouldn’t have helped matters. Another explanation pointed to the lead piping installed in the ships themselves. Would water passing through these pipes have poisoned the men in the process of drinking or breathing? What about lead-based paints, often needing to be applied throughout the year in new coats, and condensation to follow on steam-powered and heated ships? What about the nature of being a person in the Victorian era in the first place? You were probably about as leaden as a musket ball.
So Beattie made his trek north, intending to exhume John Torrington and crossing his fingers on the possibility of exhuming John Hartnell. People knew these men had died young, even by Victorian standards. Torrington was 20 years old, Hartnell 25, and William Braine 32. Torrington and Hartnell died within three days of one another at the beginning of January, 1846. Braine died only a few months later in April. If Beattie’s theory was correct, then lead may have played a part in why these men were dropping like flies after only a few months on the Expedition.
As detailed in his book, Frozen in Time, great pains were taken to get permits and carefully exhume John Torrington. It was far from easy. Beattie and his team had to dig, pick, and melt their way through around six feet of gravel and cement-hard permafrost. They had entertained the possibility that permafrost might have preserved the bodies; they had no idea how right they were.
After uncovering one black coffin, edged in decorative white tape and bearing brass handles (one was still in the ‘up’ position), they carefully melted through layers of ice until one researcher reached a piece of blue wool cloth. As gently as possible, he tugged aside the cloth and revealed the frozen face of John Torrington.
Tumblr media
Petty Officer and Lead Stoker John Torrington seemed to wearily peer back at the researchers. And he was, in fact, peering. Torrington’s body had been almost perfectly preserved, including his eyes, other soft tissue, and cartilage. His striking appearance startled the researchers, understandably. They had been expecting some degree of preservation, but not this.
Tumblr media
He was only 5′4″ (163 cm) and weighed just under 88 lbs (40 kg). Dressed simply in clothing that showed exactly how underweight he was at the time of his death, something about his appearance struck some emotional chord with the team. In Frozen in Time, Beattie quietly makes the comment that Torrington looked, “just unconscious” and “anything but grotesque”.
“The expression on his thin face, with its pouting mouth and half-closed eyes gazing through delicate, light-brown eyelashes, was peaceful. His nose and forehead, in contrast to the natural skin colour of the rest of his face, were darkened by contact with the blue-wool coffin covering. This shadowed the face, accentuating the softness of its appearance. The tragedy of Torrington’s young death was as apparent to the researchers as it must have been to his shipmates 138 years before.” (pp. 171-172)
His jaw was bound shut with a polka-dot kerchief (think Jacob Marley) and his limbs were tied together using cotton wrapping. Researchers made note of his hands, which showed some of the greatest degree of his preservation.
Tumblr media
What was even more incredible was the full degree of flexibility his body retained. Beattie and a team member lifted Torrington from his coffin for his full autopsy, and as they did so, Torrington’s head rolled onto Beattie’s left shoulder. Beattie also noted how light and limp Torrington was more or less like lifting an unconscious child.
Samples were taken of Torrington’s hair, nails, organs, and brain. The fact that these samples could be taken at all was incredible, especially in their state of preservation. After this was done, Torrington was reburied with the utmost respect and the expectation that the grave itself would refreeze from encroaching water. Not only would Torrington be preserved physically, but his photos were about to preserve his memory in ways no one could really expect.
But, of course, he was just one of three.
John Hartnell and the ‘Face of Death’
Researchers literally brushed the surface of Hartnell’s grave in 1984 as time constraints prevented them from doing a full exhumation. They had enough time to do an initial dig and uncover part of him, which was enough to sate their curiosity for the moment. Undoubtedly, they still thought of Torrington’s repose and his more delicate features.
They weren’t really prepared for, uh...
Tumblr media
Probably the most pissed-off mummy known to man. At least, that’s what he looked like. One researcher, Walt Kowal, might have summed it up best when he remarked, “This guy is spooky. The quintessential pirate. This guy is frightening.” (p. 184)
He wasn’t entirely wrong. Something about John Hartnell’s face seemed angry, and it didn’t help matters that his right eye was missing. As the water drained away, John Hartnell grimaced where Torrington had just seemed to passively observe. In time, the entire figure of AB John Hartnell emerged.
Tumblr media
Dark-haired and hazel-eyed, Hartnell appeared to be something of Torrington’s opposite. Both men had the distinct features of mummification-in-ice, such as the receded and pursed lips from the water and the half-open eyes. That was where the similarities ended, however. Hartnell was bundled up in a blanket and shroud with his head resting on a pillow, where Torrington laid on a bed of sawdust (often mistaken in pictures as his hair). Pains had been taken to make Hartnell look presentable; his hair was combed and cut, his nails trimmed, and his body dressed in three shirts and a hat (no pants, though).
The question remained almost tangible: why were these men so different?
As the researchers reburied the remains and returned to Alberta to pore over lab results, so to am I going to take a step back and look at their lives in detail.
The Men Behind the Mummies
There’s not much I can say about Torrington that hasn’t been beautifully covered in magnificent detail by my Torrington research counterpart, @entwinedmoon. Her Torrington research series absolutely floored me with its depth and clear passion for the subject! Literally everything about his life, death, and afterlife is covered in there, so I can’t recommend it enough. And I absolutely agree with the sentiment that tracking Torrington down is like cryptid-hunting. Oof.
What I can say in a pale shadow of entwinedmoon’s work is that John Shaw Torrington was born around 1825 in the city of Manchester, making him around 19 or 20 at the time of his death. He hadn’t served in the Navy prior to being assigned as a petty officer on HMS Terror, but his lung tissue showed that he’d definitely been exposed to the amount of smoke expected of both a lead stoker and a Manchester resident (given its Victorian reputation as a pollution-belching beast of a city). Exact details of his life are hard to follow, making him something of a shadowy figure for being so front-facing after his death. Examination of his hands showed that at the time of his death, he probably hadn’t done much work between his illness and the fact the ships were frozen in and thus not really needing someone to work their locomotive engines.
And he’d been sick. Really sick.
In the end, it was a combination of tuberculosis and pneumonia that sent John Torrington to his premature grave. He’d been, as discussed, incredibly underweight, but had been well enough to pass a health check in Greenland when some of his comrades had been sent back to England for similar health issues. The when of his illness isn’t known, but it had lingered long enough to thoroughly emaciate him. Had he been sick prior to leaving England and just covered it up? Possibly. Had he been sick but had a flare-up at some point after the health check? Also completely possible.
In short, after his autopsy it became clear that everything about Torrington’s body was at active war against his life. He’d been small in build and had lungs so scarred with smoke and illness that lung tissue adhered to his chest wall. This wasn’t a man destined to live very long.
As opposed to his neighbor.
Tumblr media
A personal aside, John Hartnell is my favorite. I’ve spent years researching his life, his family, and every detail I can hunt down about him, and it’s taking a lot not to just fly right into overshare mode. I can say that Hartnell’s mummy wears a lot of reminders of his life, along with the life of another one of the Expedition’s non-mummified members.
John Hartnell was born in 1820 in Gillingham, Kent. He was the oldest of five siblings and after the death of his father in 1832, immediately went to work as an apprentice shoemaker. Yeah, not a Navy man or a dockyard worker like his father. He signed his name on a form dedicating his time and effort under one Henry Sarge and went to work crafting footwear. A necrotic right wrist bone tells a story of repetitive movements and damage. Growth arrest lines in his ankle bones say that the 5′11″ (180 cm) Hartnell had actually had his growth stunted around the onset of puberty, possibly owing to malnutrition. However, letters from his mother Sarah and brother Charles paint the image of a close-knit family avid to support one another.
So close-knit, in fact, that John was one of two Hartnells on Erebus. His brother, Thomas, was two years younger than him and accompanied John as an AB. Their names appear beside one another in the muster books (possibly including a cousin, John Strickland) and John was buried in one of Thomas’ shirts, with the initials embroidered on a shirttail.
Tumblr media
Although no known letters exist from John or Thomas Hartnell, the grave contents alone paint a remarkable picture of family ties in extraordinary conditions.
A new question arose, however. Torrington may have been marked by fate with his illness, but Hartnell had been healthy even past the health check in Greenland. What had happened to him?
For that, we need to go back to Beechey Island in the summer of 1986.
‘Son of a bitch! He’s been autopsied!’
Beattie and his team returned to Beechey Island in June, 1986 with a renewed sense of purpose and, of all things, an x-ray machine. It was set to be the first time such a machine would operate above the Arctic Circle and the team was both eager to try and dreading the worst case scenarios. Results from Torrington encouraged them, as the lab gave the news that Torrington’s hair had showed lead levels far above average, further pointing toward the lead-poisoning theory. Now the researchers were prepared to see if the same held true of John Hartnell and William Braine.
Unfortunately, very little is known of Royal Marine William Braine, aside from the fact that he was a private from Somerset. He’d been married prior to his departure, and seemed to come from a large, poor family. Economic reasons may have led him to join the Royal Marines, and he’d had no choice in where he was set to be assigned. Just as with the rest of the Marines in the Expedition, they were to serve in the Arctic regardless of their choices, and at a regular pay rate as opposed to the regular crew’s double pay. Aside from this, Braine’s life is well-obscured by history at the moment, so I won’t go into his results as much as Hartnell’s which can be correlated with his personal history.
The team re-exhumed John Hartnell after a good deal of difficulty, as shown in this incredible NOVA documentary aired in 1988. In the two years since the last exhumation, very little had changed in Hartnell’s appearance. The main difference was that his remaining eye appeared more sunken, but clearly the ice had done its job in preserving him.
This time, the team cut away his toque and revealed, of all things, a full head of hair.
Tumblr media
Brian Spenceley, a physics professor at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, stood in as a photographer during this exhumation. What made his presence remarkable was the fact that he was John and Thomas Hartnell’s great-great nephew. It’s somewhat eerie to see him in the NOVA documentary, juxtaposed with images of Hartnell that are clear enough to show some family resemblances.
Like Torrington, Hartnell was removed from his coffin for a full autopsy. Unlike Torrington, Hartnell was subjected to x-rays which required removal of his clothing. And very much unlike Hartnell, removal of his clothing revealed another detail that, at risk of sounding clickbait-y, shocked the researchers.
Tumblr media
He’d already been autopsied.
Hartnell bore the scars and stitches of an upside-down Y-incision that terminated at his hips rather than his shoulders. It correlated with some initial results of his x-ray which showed a scrambling of organ material, some in places where it shouldn’t have been (his liver in his shoulder, for instance).
Tumblr media
According to Beattie, John Hartnell had been autopsied while still on Erebus, presumably under the hands of assistant surgeon and naturalist Harry D.S. Goodsir. The autopsy appeared hurried, with Hartnell’s chest plate being replaced upside-down as well. Beattie estimated that the entire procedure lasted no more than a half hour. However it had gone, someone had quickly cut out his organs, examined some (such as his heart) in detail at the point of a scalpel, and then shoved the organs back in without a care as to where they went. There are plenty of explanations for the time constraints, including the cold, the threat of disease, and the possible pressure of doing an autopsy under the scrutiny of superstitious sailors and a distraught younger brother. All in all, it gave the team a remarkable chance to observe a Victorian autopsy as they did their own.
As with Torrington, the team took samples of organ, bone, nail, and hair for later analysis. Hartnell’s appearance pointed yet another accusing finger at tuberculosis, but not with the lung damage as sustained in Torrington’s body. It was possible there was something else at work with Hartnell.
Also, a polar bear interfered, leading to one of the best forensic case notes I’ve ever seen.
Tumblr media
Once autopsies and x-rays were concluded (the x-ray machine worked fine, provided it was being warmed by a fish tank water heater), Hartnell was wrapped in a linen shroud with his clothes placed in a bag to be buried with him. With Spenceley present at the reburial and the thought that Thomas Hartnell had been at the graveside 140 years prior, the whole situation carried an extra emotional weight. As Spenceley recalled, at the end he felt as though he was burying someone he knew.
Once the grave was replaced as accurately as possible following archaeological diagrams and photographs, the time came to exhume the third mummy, William Braine.
And he didn’t look quite right.
Tumblr media
Whereas Torrington and Hartnell had retained something of a lively appearance (loosely, at least), Braine looked well and truly dead. He had clearly decomposed to some degree before the preservation qualities of the permafrost could take effect. His eyes were sunken into his head, his skin wax-like, skull prominent, and body slightly twisted in the coffin. One arm was tucked under his body to make him fit into what seemed to be an ill-fitting coffin that, unlike the other two, was not fitted to his measurements. Even the lid had been shoved down until it pressed against his nose and deformed it slightly. And even worse, the skin of one arm showed rat bites. Obviously, it had taken a good while for poor Braine to actually be buried. Like I said, he was 32 at the time of his death. His body sure doesn’t make him look 32.
His x-rays were far more conclusive in the cause of his death, but less so in the case of his burial. Braine’s spine had been literally twisted by tuberculosis.
Tumblr media
It clearly had more time to wrack his body. He weighed about as much as Torrington had but stood at 6′0″ (181 cm). A theory arose that Braine had possibly died in a sledge group, causing his companions to haul his body back to shore. He had probably been kept in the hold for some time, in accordance with the bite marks and level of decomposition.
Sadly, as said, little is known of Braine’s life. He was illiterate, having made an X mark in the muster records. No letters have been found addressed to him or from any of his siblings. While one cursory biography was written by a possible descendant, not much research has been done to solve the mystery of his life (yet).
Braine was thereafter reburied, and this chapter of the Beechey Island’s saga was nearly done. And yet, the exhumations only provided more questions than answers.
Heavy Metal
Lead. Pb. Atomic number 82.
Zinc. Zn. Atomic number 30.
Neither are innocuous, and both bore some of the blame for what killed the men of the Franklin Expedition. The question is to what degree is the blame well-placed?
Dr. Owen Beattie set about to find out. Sample results from Hartnell and Braine came back from the lab with more bad news on the lead front. Both bodies showed high levels, furthermore damning the solder and piping. However, both Hartnell and Braine showed markedly less lead in their systems than Torrington.
Results left the cozy realm of academia and out into the great, wide international world. As will be discussed, the photographs of the mummies alone had caused something of a media frenzy, inspiring a new cultural Franklin-themed wave of music, art, and literature. But the lead-poisoning theory rang some discordant bell in the public’s imagination and became less of a theory and more of an accepted fact. Most decided that Franklin’s men had been killed by the lowest bidder of the Admiralty’s victualing department.
Tumblr media
Those naughty, naughty Goldner’s tinned foods.
It would be some years before this theory was questioned. In fact, by all appearances, it was Hartnell who seemed to question it the most. After all, the lead content of his body had gone down after leaving England. And how did we know that?
Tumblr media
His nails told us so. And that wasn’t the only information they decided to divulge. Because of these findings, scientists could figure out when his sickness began nearly down to the day. Not only that, but they also discovered that John Hartnell had a very severe zinc deficiency.
Tumblr media
‘Hartnell’s time machine’ as it was nicknamed became an incredible source for vital clues to the mysteries posed by the Beechey Island trio. The spike at the end of the chart shows the point that Hartnell’s body began to break down and essentially devour itself for one last effort at keeping itself alive. What this revealed was that Hartnell’s illness was practically a flash in the pan; he’d only really been sick for about a month and a half before his death. How did such a dramatic downturn occur?
So far, it seems like a combination of bad genes and that little demon of a zinc deficiency. John Hartnell’s autopsy reports revealed a whole slew of issues from a sprained ankle to a compacted vertebral disc (which would have been painful). It was clear he had lived a hard and active life, with the wear and tear showing on his very bones. The zinc deficiency’s symptoms would have manifested as weight loss, fatigue, poor wound healing, night blindness, and an increased risk of infection. The last symptom in that last may point the most damning finger at what finally killed John Hartnell. If he had a zinc deficiency as severely as it appears, his immune system would have been compromised and he wouldn’t have been able to fight off infection as well as some of his comrades.
Not only that, but lining up historical hints adds another sinister factor to the list.
In 1853, an exhumation attempt was carried out on his grave under the auspices of Sir Edward Augustus Inglefield of the HMS Isobel and his physician, Dr. Peter Sutherland (the group that put the pickax through his arm). One letter refers to the body as:
“perfectly preserved by the intense cold, exhibited no trace of scurvy or other malignant disease, but was manifestly that of a person who had died of consumption, a malady to which it was further known that the deceased was prone.” (Sir Roderick Murchinson, Royal Geographic Society, 1853)
Again: “known that the deceased was prone.” Someone apparently knew or believed that John Hartnell had previously been consumptive. Not only that, but plying a Maidstone newspaper brought up another point:
Tumblr media
John Hartnell’s father, also named Thomas, died from a ‘lingering illness’. While there are multiple possibilities as to what this illness was, it lines up nicely with both the historical record and the clues in Hartnell’s body. It’s possible he was ill with tuberculosis prior, had his immune system compromised by his zinc deficiency, and had his previous illness exacerbated by Arctic conditions.
And all this was learned from one mummy.
While this doesn’t solve the deaths of every member of the Franklin Expedition, the findings at Beechey Island provided incredible insight into their lives and deaths, and may have opened a door into further understanding.
‘God have mercy on the frozen man’
The forensic results of the exhumations were astounding in themselves, but the cultural impact can’t be understated. The world was taken by the images of Torrington, Hartnell, and Braine. Torrington in particular had his image splashed across magazines and newspapers, becoming the quintessential poster boy of the Expedition. He haunted no lack of dreams (mine included, circa age 7) with his gaunt face and hazy, half-lidded eyes. One might say something about a man straddling the precipice of life and death, as it isn’t often that the dead look at you.
As said, the trio inspired a small but noticeable culture wave, with just a few key and oft-cited examples provided below:
Iron Maiden’s ‘Stranger in a Strange Land’
James Taylor’s ‘Frozen Man’
Margaret Atwood’s short story ‘The Age of Lead’
Also, this particularly recognizable scene from AMC’s The Terror!
Tumblr media
Paintings, sculptures, tattoos, poems, short stories, cosplay, dolls, and on and on! You could even argue that the discoveries on Beechey Island reignited new interest in the Franklin Expedition, creating a wave of discovery which eventually culminated in the discovery of the shipwrecks of Erebus in 2014 and Terror in 2016. Suddenly, the men of the Expedition were real, as tangible as you or me. People saw their faces, realized that these men were reaching across from the Victorian era into the 20th century. Sure, now they’re mostly condemned to Listverse-type categories of scariest mummies, but they’ve certainly drummed up emotional reactions in their time.
The Process
Now that we’ve covered the who, what, and when, it’s down to the how. How is a body preserved so well in ice and permafrost? The answer, my dear, is as simple as this picture.
Tumblr media
It’s refrigeration on a natural level! Just as a refrigerator or freezer slows or completely stops bacteria from causing decay in food items (freeze your meats, my dudes!), permafrost and ice extends the same courtesy to anything buried in them. Of course, the conditions have to be specific! Other bodies found of the Expedition haven’t had even close to the same amount of preservation as the Beechey Island mummies. Wind, animals, and other natural processes have left a trail of skeletons rather than mummies. Clearly, something about depth of burial and level of protection is important as well.
Other ice mummies set to be covered include Ötzi the Iceman, and the Qilakitsoq mummies of Greenland. While there’s some variation as to their causes (glacial freezing and cold, dry air, respectively), the process is essentially the same. Cold stops naughty bacteria! The deep freeze kept the Beechey Island mummies from complete and utter decay, like freezing beef in an ice cube. Granted, if the mummies were ever exposed to warmer-than-freezing air for a pronounced length of time, they would eventually decay.
Conclusion
The Beechey Island mummies are an invaluable information source for questions about the final, mysterious fate of the men of the Franklin Expedition. Their bodies have provided incredible clues and beautiful insight into their lives as well as the lives of men like them. Not only that, but their cultural impact inspired a new wave of interest and the thought that the border between life and death is a surprisingly fragile one. While their initial appearance may be frightening or shocking to some, it’s important to remember that these were young men thrust into extraordinary circumstances. Their memory and impact is still felt to this day (which I hope makes them happy, wherever they are!).
If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions on this inaugural Mummy Monday, feel free to hit me up through my askbox or DMs! It’s a lot of fun for me and I’m totally open to any and all comments about how I’m doing! And the next Mummy Monday installment will be about the Qilakitsoq mummies!
Thanks for reading!

Hey I've read a lot of your fanfictions. They were really good and a break (I should probably say a relief) from the usual ones where Stiles and Derek are main characters. If this is not too much trouble (and if you take requests) could you write a one-shot between Steve Rogers and Scott McCall? A sort of character study where you show the differences and similarities between them
I’ll do you one better!  I’ve already written one!
Tumblr media
Captain America and the Wolf’s Crown moves the Teen Wolf storyline post-3A back to the World War II era and grapples with issues of power, racism, sexism, and homophobia that were a lot more out in the open back then.  It’s 30 chapters and 120k.   (I’m revising it right now because when you reread your own work, you find passages where you wonder if you hit your head really hard immediately before you wrote them.)
And if you want something new instead, I’m in the midst of preparations to write a sequel to my most popular work, Dioscuri.   This story (23 chapters and 122k) focuses on Teen Wolf’s 3B storyline with Hydra taking an interest in using the nogitsune as an agent of chaos in the run up to Captain America: The Winter Solder.  The sequel is tentatively named Epigoni and will absolutely feature both Scott and Steve.  The first chapter  should be up in about two weeks.
Now, as a word of warning, while Scott is a main character in all three of these stories, I utterly despise when fanfiction writers use Scott (or Allison or Isaac or Malia or name a character other than Stiles or a Hale) as background furniture to make a point (usually the point being how anyone who’s not a predatory older white man treats Stiles so badly) and ignore them as fully-developed characters.  So I do spend at least a little bit of time exploring the other characters.

WandaVision - TV Review
3/8/21 (spoilers!)
Tumblr media
Directed by Matt Shakman, created by Jac Schaeffer
I was skeptical when I saw that several MCU shows were coming to Disney+. I was afraid the story continuity would get watered down and become too convoluted. After watching WandaVision to its fullest, I've fully flipped my opinion to the point where now I feel like the true greatness of the MCU might come from the Disney+. WandaVision gives the actors room to breathe and undergo real character development over a long period of time, as opposed to their few collective minutes on screen in the movies. This show alone has made Wanda Maximoff and Vision the two most well rounded characters in the entire MCU, at lest on the level of Tony Stark.
Before WandaVision, the two leads played Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany barely got time to act on screen. The stranglehold on the character development meant most members of the MCU that weren't the star, had to act and speak as efficiently as possible to keep the story moving. I've always liked Vision a lot since Age of Ultron. He was the Spock of the group, yet was also one of the most powerful members who didn't flaunt his strength. I've always wanted more out of Wanda as well, beings her powers seemed to have much more potential than what we see in the movies. Luckily this show gave us a ton of both characters, and it makes me excited for the near future shows such as The Falcon & The Winter Solder and Loki.
Tumblr media
Wanda and Vision appear to be stuck or placed in a world emulating sitcoms from varying decades. If that wasn't strange enough, Wanda still seems to have her powers, and Vision was killed earlier by Thanos. What exactly is going on is the hook of the show, with the sitcom parody being a close second place. Growing up watching sitcoms from each era WandaVision pays homage to, I was curious how the showrunners were going to mix MCU characters, why they were in sitcoms, and what was truly afoot. As it turns out, this show does answer everything eventually, and I think I benefitted greatly from having zero expectations about the show with little to no theories explaining what might be happening.
Each episode emulates sitcoms from a different decade, starting with episode 1 most similar to the Dick Van Dyke Show or I Love Lucy. Episode 2 crawls into the 60s and 70s with Bewitched and The Brady Bunch being the main influence (and so on and so forth through the 80s, 90s, 2000's and even 2010's). While the jokes themselves aren't gut-busting, they fit the era of each representative time period, which is the point. It's supposed to be endearing, and not a cutting edge comedy. Meanwhile in the background, holes in the armor start to appear, where the "real world" is seen slowly but surely.
Tumblr media
The entire concept and existence of this show would be mind boggling if you tried to tell me about it back in the early days of the MCU. I remember when the rumors of a big crossover movie called The Avengers was bound to happen, and look where we are now. The events of WandaVision as it turns out are a massive illusion created by Wanda to cope with the grief of losing yet another loved one, and having no soft spot to fall. She has cast a spell across and entire New Jersey town, enslaved all of its citizens, and has recreated Vision as she remembers him. On the outside, S.W.O.R.D is investigating what is going on within the impenetrable town.
Yes, this effectively makes Wanda an outright villain. The show does an incredible job showing things from her perspective and why she's doing what she's doing, but none the less is doing something evil. I'd say one drawback of the show I have is Wanda not facing harsher consequences at the end, and while she flies off, I wanted the side characters working for S.W.O.R.D. to be more angry with her. I hope they continue this villainous streak with Wanda in the future, and don't let her off too easy. WandaVision blew away my expectations. The great character development, impressive acting (especially Olsen), high production value, and overall intriguing storytelling makes me excited for each and every MCU show coming to Disney+.

5 Indian watch brands that you must look out for in 2022.
5 Indian watch brands that you must look out for in 2022.
Wearing a smartwatch on your wrist will always be in style. Your style and accessories say a lot about who you are. In today’s society, we must present a positive image to succeed professionally, particularly for those working in the marketing, sales, and related industries. People frequently opt for high-end brands when purchasing elegant and fashionable timepieces. Many of India’s top watch companies for 2022 produce enticing, aspirational watches.
Tumblr media
When it comes to timepieces, we Indians are pretty discerning and intelligent. Everybody wants a worthwhile purchase. Because of this, we frequently struggle to choose the top watch companies in India. Every brand has a distinctive look and appeal of its own. Therefore, we are giving you the list of top watch brands made in India for 2022 to assist your purchases.
Here is a list of the top watch brands in India in 2022.
Choosing the ideal watch might be difficult because so many different watch brands are on the market. Even if you’ve been researching the best watch brands online, it can be challenging to pick the right one. So your search is over right here. Let’s look at our ranking of the top watch companies in India for 2022 for both men and women. We have brands that are both pricey and luxurious on this list.
1) Titan Autumn-winter 19 Analog.
If you appreciate leather watches, don’t look back — this watch is for you!
2) Janata HMT watches.
For a good reason, the Janata is HMT’s most famous, iconic, and endearing watch. In Hindi, “Janata” is the word for “public”; hence the Janata watch was created as a tribute to the Indian people. The Janata is a fundamental watch at its core. It is driven by a manual winding, 17 jewel movement, and features a slim 35mm case approximately 11mm thick (including the domed crystal). The movement is where the crucial Citizen technology transfer took place. Citizen’s 0201 calibers were modified to become HMT’s 0231 hand-winding movements, which featured the ‘Parashock’ shock protection mechanism from the Japanese watchmaker. For this reason, the dial of hand-winding HMT watches states, “Parashock 17 Jewels.”
3) Filigree watch(Jaipur).
Filigree is a delicate embellishment in which skilled jewellers painstakingly solder fine, pliable threads of precious metal, which are then twisted or curled into a beautiful artistic motif or design of the jewellery, or in this case, the ‘Filigree Wristwear.’ Housing a genuine One Anna Coin from the King George VI era with 12 sides makes it a perfect fit for a watch.
4) Horizons blue fume dial — Bangalore.
The Horizon’s blue fumé dial is rare. You’ll find yourself regularly checking the interior of this dial.
5) Ajwain Sholavaram Pulse.
The Ajwain Sholavaram Pulse, the first mechanical chronograph produced in India, is one of the brand’s crown jewels. Named for the area of the same name that is 24 kilometers north of Chennai and contains India’s first racetrack (1953).

I stumbled over your Cresswell Mouline Rouge AU AND ILOVE IT!!! If you want to share more thoughts about it, I would be so happy. What exactly is Thorne in it? How does their romance develop? What about the other characters? Anything you want to share, I would looooove to hear it. :D
HJBBJbjb WHY YES THANK YOU. I do wanna talk about it more so here we go, one of my annoyingly long AU summaries:
It’s like the movie except the typewriter is a laptop and it’s TLC worldbuilding. It’s set in Paris a couple years into Third Era,  as the world is being rebuilt after WW4. Cress, the shell daughter of a Lunar military doctor, has grand, romantic, idealistic ideas about Earth and she decides to go down there and pursue her passion for art before the rumors about travel ban become reality.
One day she discovers there’s a play being practiced in the neighboring apartment, led by Iko, a charming escort droid employed at the Moulin Rouge. Realizing Cress is a talented writer/actress/singer, Iko proposes she writes Moulin Rouge’s first real theater piece. Against her better judgement, Cress accepts- not only is she poor and unemployed, but the club is also the hub for society’s rejects, and Cress has spent her entire life pushed away - Lunars hating her shell nature, Earth hating her Lunar blood. Surrounded by androids and cyborgs and runaway mutant solders, she feels like she might belong for the first time in her life.
Ofc, the plan is to get the star of the club on their side, so Iko decides to smuggle Cress in and have her audition in private. Enter THORNE. I have no idea what his stage name is, but it is def something extra and Captain-like, cuz he’s the one who descends down on a sparkling swing and brings in most of the crowd for the club. Tho I am not sure who Ziedler would be, or the Duke. Maybe Levana and Sybil????? I suppose we’ll go with that for now.
Anyway, Cress is completely smitten, and the good ol switcharoo happens. Thorne is like, “that girl doesn’t look like the moneybag I’m supposed to seduce into giving us money, but whatever, a job is a job”. Cress is freaking out because while it is def fun to fantasize, this incredibly hot dude is being very unprofessional during her job interview and that is not fun at all. But being the perfect Christian she is, she sings her song and the moon joins in and they dance across rooftops and everything that goes along that beautiful scene. Cue the interruption, cue the Pitch. Afterwards Cress visits him once again, wondering if he meant it when he said he was in love with her. Thorne is like “lol no, I’m sorry but telling people what they want to hear is my job” even though he’s already halfway there bc WOW this girl is unlike anyone he’s ever met before and she is so smart and kind and dorky and managed to get them out of that big trouble by making up an entire show on the spot. Also, she is sincerely offering nothing but her love, which is something that has never ever even occurred to him as a possible fair exchange. So when she goes “All you need is love,” it’s no wonder his will crumbles.
And so the play, Spectacular Spectacular, begins production. I’m not very good at gushy romance, but insert a bunch of gushy romance here, albeit more awkward and cute cuz it’s Cresswell. Now, I know Cress is perfect for the Broadway version where Christian plays the male lead, but I REALLY want Winter to be Thorne’s on-stage love interest and Cinder to play the evil rival bc that’s comedy gold right there. Iko gets all of Tolouse’s parts, just as good of a friend and desperate for love. Kai gets Marie’s job as Thorne’s backstage helper. I kinda want Jacin to do the betrayal, but by accident, not out of real malice. Wolf and Scarlet get to storm the tower and punch Sybil in the face during Roxanne.
Levana is conspiring with Sybil in this one. She convinces Thorne pursuing the romance would only end in a disaster, since he has never managed a single good thing in his life, and he would just ruin Cress’ life sooner or later. She also threatens to have Cress killed if he doesn’t comply, so he finally gives in, figuring it’s for the best anyway. Cress is totally shattered and embarrassed, pulls out her hackin’ skillz, and crashes the premiere in a fit of desperation. But then magical singing happens again, the crew does the proper ending of the show, the entire gang teams up to kick Levana and Sybil out, and HAPPY END IS HAPPY!!!!
