ylfva my trusted comics mutual. dc comics fascinate me and i have always wanted to get into them but theyre sososo intimidating and confusing and scary to me do u have any advice. heres a picture of my cats so so sleepy for your time

okay so um. youre right its very confusing!! the general advice is as follows though:

one: what general part of dc do you want to get into? think batman/batfamily, superfamily, green lantern corps, flashfam, wonder woman, etc.

two: from there, look into characters and pick a character or two to really get into!! you can literally do this based on like, they seem cool and/or hot. read up on their summary on the wiki!

three: what timeline do you want to get into? most of the time, people will list the post-crisis, pre-flashpoint timeline. this is a safe bet, but for the NEWEST comics, you will want rebirth. typically if youre just getting into comics, most of the backstory is in pre or post crisis. though pre-crisis is quite old and the characters have changed a lot since then.

safest bet is post-crisis.

also: some reading lists will list multiple timelines. these are good.

four: find a reading list. i would reccommend looking on tumblr (not reddit) for these. some characters (ie. batman) will have a LOT to get through. if this is the case for you id reccomend keeping a list or spreadsheet of what youve read and what you want to read.

if the character you picked is more of a side character (or even one who was just introduced in the context of another character, and then became their own main character) you might want to look into that character first for context and read the basics.

most reading lists will categorize things by how important they are, and then by chronological order.

five: get reading! comics are EXPENSIVE so piracy is not only ok, but sometimes the only feasible option. but remember loose lips sink ships dont just go talking abt this everywhere yk.
