Food the past two weeks
So, Iā€™ve managed to avoid TooGoodToGo the past two weeks I believe, partly because of being so busy but also because they would get ALL my money.
Instead, hereā€™s some restaurants that were tried this week (Wonā€™t be any pictures here but if you check out my instagram highlights under theĀ ā€˜foodā€™ topic, youā€™ll see what Iā€™ve been up to!Ā https://www.instagram.com/cheyokok/
1. Friday nights out: Pizzeria Cappelli. A nice slice, 10/10 would go back if I was in that area, as theyā€™re open til 4am :)
2. Sabrinaā€™s Cafe with the roomie. We both got stuffed french toast, and I bought a pumpkin spice latte on the side because letā€™s be honest, itā€™s basically October
3. LaScalaā€™s Fire Philly: Going out with my big, her friends, and my classmates who happen to be littles to my bigā€™s friends (just one interconnected group), we chose here to eat dinner at one night. Ordering 3 pizzas and 3 pastas, that was such a great decision by my big. Everyone pretty much got to sample 6 different dishes, and the total bill wasnā€™t a lot compared to all the foods we got to eat. Next time going out, I will definitely do the half and half method, or whatever fits the group size haha.
4. Quality Taste Jerk Hut: Now this one was a real treat. Accompanying a classmate because I too, wanted some Jamaican food but was probably never going to go out of my way to get it until November maybe, walked in and immediately felt like I was in Jamaica again. First of all, the staff had a Jamaican accent and was really nice! The place smelled AMAZING! And they had two sections of the store, one side that sold a lot of jerk-related foods and curry, and another that sold oxtail and patties. Of course I couldnā€™t leave without getting some jerk chicken and two festivals. When I got home, that festival was DEVOUREDDDDD!!!
5. Copabanana: Went for a classmateā€™s birthday:) Happy birthday woot woot! Their margaritas, A1! Especially if you get the $20 one designed for 3 people. One of those by yourself and youā€™re set!!! Ordering their nachos with beef on it, as you can never go wrong, they were splendid *chefs kiss*.Ā
6. Surreal Creamery: Ending the Copabanana night at Surreal Creamery, a cookie monster ice cream in a mason jar, topped with caramel sauce, oreos, and graham crackers was amazing. It was more than enough for two people, plus leftovers for whoever wanted the jar (speaking from experience as I wanted the jar). For $12, Iā€™d say its worth it. Ice cream thatā€™ll last about 3 days with a bunch of toppings.

From FL to Philly: Week 6
So, I mightā€™ve missed week 5, but I got wrapped up in fraternity events, making study guides for my two exams this Thursday and Friday, all while studying for a mastery exam (a second attempt if you fail an exam) and trying to remember to exercise and sleep decently.
During week 5, I had the pleasure of getting ice cream with one of the two frats Iā€™m planning on joining. Still stuck between the two, I asked a classmate this past week why he joined one, and his response for the most part solidified which frat I was going to join. He mentioned that whichever frat we pick will still have our classmates in it, so if youā€™re not friends with them now, joining the frat wonā€™t help you become their friends then...basically you join if you want to be friends with specific upperclassman, but as for our fellow D1s, I already see them every day to get the opportunity to become their friends.
That really stuck with me, as I was 51% choosing one frat for the social aspects in hopes of finding my group, since Iā€™m still struggling with that. But heā€™s right, if theyā€™re not my close friends now, joining might not make a difference. All things social aside, pick the one I feel more at home with, and itā€™s the ice cream (49%) frat. Either way, I believe I already know my decision but we still have about two more weeks to decide.
My roommate and I also ventured to Sabrinaā€™s Cafe for breakfast, and I really do enjoy our weekend hangout times. It makes me very happy. 10/10 recommend the cafe, as Iā€™ll probably go back after we try more places.
During week 6, I mainly continued to make my study guides. I DID FINISH TOOTH NUMBER 8 AS A WAX UP so that was really nice. I didnā€™t think I was going to finish. A classmate and I also went to sim lab together to practice drilling the shapes we were given, and I believe Iā€™m getting better. Iā€™ll head back again sometime this upcoming week for more practice.
I also JUST finished a book Iā€™ve been reading for 6 months (I know yes yes I know). A Gentleman In Moscow was a great read and highly recommend. I simply canā€™t concentrate to read books but I love them.
My roommate and I saw #DontWorryDarling last night, as Iā€™d say it was a good movie. The concept of it was particularly amusing, and in the grand scheme of things, I understand the decision made by both parties.

From Fl to Philly: Week 4
This week was kinda rough. Two exams, Thursday and Friday. I tried studying for the past week and a half but I couldnā€™t focus. Taking my struggles to YouTube, I found aĀ ā€œStudy with meā€ 2 hour long video. It was actually quite helpful at keeping me from opening random websites *cough* Amazon *cough*. Nonetheless, i made it through and tried my best.
We also started lab, in which we were waxing a maxillary central incisor (your two front teeth). so that was fun! Weā€™ll get to finish that up on Monday, in which youā€™ll see either my really good or really bad wax-up haha!
Restaurant: This week we tried Weckerlyā€™s Ice Cream! It was insanelyyyy good. The flavor I picked (6 to choose from) was Caramel Corn dipped in cocoa crumbles. Best $7 ice cream I ever had. These ice cream places in Philly are making Florida ice cream look like nothingggg. I will also be visiting them in the near future to satisfy my sweet tooth once more.
This weekend, Iā€™m off to Ross to browse around (need nothing but wants new clothes), and I ordered a cute little doggy backpack for Dior so I can carry him around with me on the weekends.
Check out my instagramĀ https://www.instagram.com/cheyokok/Ā for reels and story highlights of the places Iā€™ve eaten at!

Too Good To Go: Week 3
Too Good To Go, the app, was mentioned in my very first or second post. It's pretty much an app that partners with stores within whatever mile radius you put, and the stores near the end of closing will give you their leftovers from the day. Leftovers may include ice cream thats almost done in a giant tub, pizza that they made too much of, random bread they were going to throw away, produce that may have scratches or minor cosmetic issues...whatever it is, you get it at a discounted price. The only thing is, you never know what you'll be getting, which makes it fun!
Last weekend I used the app for a pizza place, and I got ZERO pizza. I did get about 20 foot-long hoagie/sub rolls. At first I was disappointed, but then I realized that I love tomato soup, thus I now have bread to eat with my tomato soup for perhaps the whole year! I can also make as many subs as I want with chicken, and I don't have to think about buying bread. Simply freeze the bread in airtight bags until I'm ready for a new batch:) This app definitely teaches you to be creative sometimes.
Upon also using the app TooGoodToGo just yesterday, I snagged a bag of produce from OKProduce at the Reading Terminal Market, which is a super cute shopping area. Lots of bakeries, pizza places, and small owned shops! For $5, plus a $5 round subway trip, I got
Ā· 3 oranges
Ā· 2 cases of blueberries
Ā· A salad that literally read $5.99 on the packaging
Ā· 1 zucchini
Ā· 1 stalk of celery
Ā· 2 mangoes
Ā· A ball of lettuce
Ā· 3 peaches (I can't eat them since I'm allergic)
The store I usually shop at is within walking distance from where I live, but the groceries would've ran me AT LEAST $20-25.
Anywho, I'll be going back to the market today (you see where my money's going lol) via subway to a different store: Pennsylvania General Store, to snag another bag. I'll report back on how it goes.

From Fl to Philly: Week 3
Tumblr media
Last Friday, we (aka me and insert you) had Manakeesh, and I'm back with my review. The staff were super friendly, especially in the bakery department with helping me find a dessert I could eat since I'm allergic to nuts, and a lot of Lebanese pastries have nuts in them. I had a zaatar manakeesh and a dessert known as halva. The zataar manakeesh was wonderful, as I learned people usually eat it with something creamy. I took to my fridge, found some cream cheese, added a little bit on it, and it did the trick! The halva was not was I was expecting. It looked soft but it's actually hard and crumby when you break a piece off, but nonetheless still delicious. It definitely has a nutty flavor to it, but there were no nuts in the one I got (or else I wouldn't be writing this).
This week in school however, we had our first exam in dental anatomy. I passed (woot woot)! Now it's time to study for the next 2 exams which are in a week. Not too thrilled about it, but we do start labs soon where we get hands on experience, so definitely looking forward to that.
I will admit, I am a bit homesick, as I haven't seen a beach or pool since I got here, and I miss my friends from back home. Might just have to not eat for 2 weeks so I can afford a day trip to Jersey Beach because this lack of water to relax in will simply not cut it.
This week, the restaurant I ventured out to with a few classmates was Prunella. Sharing a plate of meatballs and The Big Nick pizza, the pizza was a 4/5 with the meatballs scoring a dazzling 5/5 (I'd give the meatballs a 6/5 if I could)!
There's more I'd like to write, but that'll be a separate post since I don't want it to be one giant post:)

From Fl to Philly: Week 2
I feel like the weeks are a bit off, so I guess we'll go by the week I am in school, how about it? Cool. cool.
Last week, while my friend was visiting, we visited the Rocky Statue and the surrounding area. The night was concluded eating at an all you can eat Korean Barbecue restaurant in China Town. It was my first time going to one in general so it will definitely be happening again.
Dior and I also went to Big Dog Run dog park last week, and when I tell you it was an effort to get to the park, it was an EFFORT. We took the subway and walked well over a mile because I couldn't find the park. Once there, Dior had a blast minute the few ants that ended up crawling on him. Not sure if we're going back there but we'll see. I was going to take the subway home, but it was so much work just to get there, I figured I oughta try the bus. 10/10 much better and much faster and the exact same price as taking the subway. 10/10 recommend bussing sometimes if you can find the bus stop haha.
This week in school was pretty solid, as we start DAU (our manual dexterity lab via a computer simulation next week or the week after), so very excited for that.
As for food places, Scoop DeVille is an ice cream place I tried the very first week. Using "TooGoodToGo" app, I got about 4 different flavors. Two are chocolate, one was a lemon flavor (soooo good!! Will def be going back to find out what flavor it was), and the last one was a chocolate brownie with a twist of I believe vanilla, also VERY good!
This week's restaurant of choice was Manakeesh Cafe Bakery & Grill, recommended to me by a classmate.

From Fl to Philly: Week 1
Tumblr media
Well, as the title suggests, I moved from Florida to Philadelphia, PA 1 week ago, and it's been everything I wanted but also everything I didn't want, but in a good way, and here's why. And yes, that is my sweet dog, but you'll hear more about him later.
The cons:
1. Coming from Florida, I'm used to the palm trees and beaches everywhere I turn. Here, there are no palm trees or beaches, so now I'll have to find other free ways to entertain myself.
2. I'm not used to living in a city where there's trash on the street so much, so I realized that I'm privileged in that sense, but how do people do it? How do you litter when you could simply hold your trash until you walk one block or get to your destination.
3. Grass. Where is it? I can't find it. I'll be honest though, where I live, there's not much grass or "prime dog walking spots", but if I walk about 10 blocks, there's plenty of grass to go around. Am I walking 10 blocks on a hot summer day though? No, no I am not.
4. Parking. I don't have a car here, so it doesn't apply. But if I wanted to bring my car, I couldn't. Who's paying $400/month for a city parking pass. Also not me.
The pros: (there's quite a few)
1. Me? Driving? Ha! I don't think so. Gone are my days of filling up gas in this economy. I'm taking the subway, bussing, or walking everywhere I need to go! And honestly, I don't even go out that much when school starts so this is wonderful.
2. The weather omg. I went jogging today around 12pm. The air was crisp and a smooth 73 degrees Fahrenheit. Florida would NEVER!
3. I try to recycle when I can, and although where I live doesn't offer recycling, a lot of the grocery stores do not use plastic bags, thus forcing you to get a reusable bag or pay extra coins for one.
4. Concerts concerts concerts. There's no better place to live for live music than major cities. Gone are the days where I'd have to drive 2 hours AND look for parking to get to a venue. Now I can hop on the subway or call an Uber if I feel like it and BAM! At the venue, no stress. This kind of goes in with the cons because I'm going to be more broke than I already am from wanting to see so many artists!
5. NYC!!!! It's only a two hour bus ride away, for $20!!!! Need I say more? Exactly.
Hope you had fun reading some pros and cons I learned about Philly while moving here, and I'll be back for week two Sunday:)
SOTW: "Friday" by MOTi and JGUAR. Needless to say, I couldn't wait for Friday.
