Time Lapse: Baker’s Global Rainbow. . This piece is a tribute to the original rainbow flag designed by artist Gilbert Baker to honor the San Francisco Gay Freedom Parade in 1978. The design of the original flag had eight colors, each one with its own symbolism, but because of practical matters, two of those colors disappeared to give rise to the flag that we have today: a six-color rainbow. This Time Lapse was created with unused material I had from previous pieces. I was able to spend a few weeks in New York. I had to take care of a few things and @crisispato and I managed to travel back to our other home... It was the first time we were there since March 10th and, although it was unique to experience the city during these strange times, I decided I needed to document it, the same way I’ve been documenting cities for the past 8 years... When my father was alive, we used to drive almost every day between Spain and Portugal. We used to avoid highways and always took narrow roads, finding joy in all the hidden treasures we ran into. Now that the borders are closed because of the pandemic, I wanted to post some of the images I took some time ago... The women I know from Galicia and the women I know from Portugal both share an incredible resilience towards whatever life brings them... Last Fall I went to Boston for a few days to try to find the right location for one of my Time-Lapses... I shot this one in front of the Grand Lodge of Masons around the Theater District in Boston. In these times of social distancing it feels strange to look at all these random people walking by the street, before the pandemic hit the two countries I consider home... I’m using this time of mandatory lockdown to try new things but also to put together pieces from cities I didn’t have time to edit before, and somehow this process makes me wonder what is the new reality we will face once we can go back to the streets without the fear and the sense of vulnerability we all feel right now... “Cristina & Xan on a Phone over NYC”. @crisispato and I moved to New York City 16 years ago... no smart phones back then, no WiFi at our tiny home...we connected to our loved ones via the public phone on the corner of Bleecker and 11th St and we literally spent hours every day talking to our people here in Galicia... I created this drawing back then, and a year later I took a class on engraving and decided to create one based on that drawing, which is now hanging at our Galician home, reminding us the beginning of this fascinating path of creating a life in the arts... Today, more than ever, I think about how incredibly fortunate we are to be able to connect around the world without breaking confinement and I reflect about the kind of “normal” we all will have to build after coronavirus...
