26.04.2023 || It’s been many years since I’ve posted here, but recent thesis deadlines are demanding a level of romanticise-academia-to-hustle-some-results-in that I haven’t needed in a long time. So here’s to some long study days and a conscious effort to avoid burnout (if those two things are capable of coexisting).

🌧 my study and daily reflections☕
Tumblr media
☕ When I reconnected with my friend from my old uni last year, I was still in postgraduate school and feeling overwhelmed by my dissertation. I hadn't been writing consistently, and my motivation had dwindled. My friend, who happens to be a PhD researcher, shared some valuable advice with me. She suggested incorporating writing into my daily routine, starting right after waking up. Just like brushing your teeth is an instinctive action, she encouraged me to make writing a dissertation a natural part of that routine. Although it might be challenging initially, she assured me that it would gradually become easier. And she was right. I successfully passed my dissertation with a merit. So, I decided to apply this approach to my current study schedule as well.
☕ Random motivational quotes have personally been helpful to me, even if they may seem cliché. They truly made a difference in keeping me motivated. I make notes with these quotes and place them on my desk, so I'm reminded to stay focused on my progress every time I sit down to work.
☕ Studying helps me with depression. In a way, studying is kind of an escape for me, keeping me distracted from depression, but in a good way. I've noticed that I feel less and less depressed when I'm studying.
☕ Tidying up my desk before I go to bed and always ensuring that the kitchen looks tidy, including keeping the sink empty and washing dishes. Makes me feel motivated to prepare delicious food and make a cup of coffee before diving into my study time. It's exactly what I've been doing.

tomorrow I go back to class for my second year at university !! I'm so excited !! also happy october everybody! (vent about masters applications below:)
but I know that it's going to get REAL very quickly bc I'm already overwhelmed by my workload... in addition to normal uni work, I will also be attending virtual uni open days as this time next year I will be submitting my masters applications......... what?????? ive already started to narrow down my options and do a lot of research bc I know that now and the Christmas break are the only times that I'll have to do this before I have to start writing the applications???? bc I'll be too busy during term and the summer to even think about thinking about thoughts like ?? WHAT??? I was a fresher two minutes ago and now I'm booking postgrad open days like hello???? what???? but I can't say I don't love it because it's soooopo exciting and I love my subject. I'm also aiming more ambitiously in terms of the universities I'll be applying for (will have safeties ofc) so that's VERY motivating. so yeah !! eeeee!!!!!

november language goals 🩷
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
this will be my first language learning goals post since i started this blog! ♡
my current languages:
french (A2)
dutch (A1)
a lil life update, i finished my masters in the uk and moved back home to germany this month. i also spent my birthday (17/10) in paris, soon after i arrived back home. while being here, i haven’t done any intense revision other than keeping my streak on the language learning apps that i use. i do have a lot more free time now since i’m currently not working and i’m also done with uni, so i would need to amend and try my best to somewhat stick to my schedule.
here are my november language learning goals ♡:
maintain a 30 days duolingo, busuu & falou streak
write a digital journal entry (notion) about my birthday trip in both french & dutch
work through ‘Niederländisch Wort für Wort’ to and incl. chapter ‘Dieses & Jenes’
finish ‘UNIT ONE: Verbs and pronouns’ in ‘Basic Dutch’
write down all dutch vocabularies up to and incl. the numbers on digital dialects (website)
finish chapter 2 in ‘Dirty French’
write down all french vocabularies up to and incl. the numbers on digital dialects (website)
finish ‘The definite article’ in ‘Modern French Grammar’
write my first entry in my workbook about basic information about myself in both french & dutch
watch 5 easyfrech & easydutch youtube videos
this doesn’t seem like a lot for a whole month but considering i haven’t done much in october, this is a good start to get back into the habit of language learning.
not sure if i will be updating every week or bi-weekly, but i think bi-weekly will be more realistic! 🤍
i do plan on going back to the uk for a few days in november and soon after travel to nigeria for about a month towards the end of this month, so i need to see how i organise my time. good thing is that i mainly use notion and e-books for my revision so i don’t need to carry any (heavy) textbooks with me. let’s see how it goes.
happy halloween & until next time,
mars the prinzess xx

my second Master's Degree is officially COMPLETE!! these past two years at Warwick University were a rich immersion in the art of poetry & in the practice of literary translation. milestones achieved have been:
completing my dissertation, entitled "Rendering Sacred Texts: Ethics and the Question of Untranslatability", in which i explored the practice of translating sacred texts and the intricate issues it presents in the field of translation studies, mainly posed by the dilemma that is the hypothesis of an intrinsically sacred quality to languages such as Sanskrit or Latin. i argued that in the case of non-dual traditions, the subsequent question, of whether translation would defile the text, is incongruent with the philosophy & cosmology the text is rooted in. i used the Lalitāsahasranāma, a central hymn of Śrīvidyā, as a case-study.
conducting my poetic research centred on bhakti or devotional poetry, a genre of Indian poetry which worships the Divine as the Beloved. i worked on two bhakti collections: "odes to the Monsoon One" and "the Monsoon One and the pilgrim", which explore a woman’s mystical journey. written as a response to the lingering legacy of female exclusion from spirituality that is present literature, the poetry rebels against misogynistic religious texts thematically, through female-centred imagery deifying the demonised body, through the subversion of elements of oppression such as motifs of marriage. the Divine is worshipped in my poems as a lover. i argued that for as long as remnants of a religious culture exclusive of women persist in South Asian literature and practice, for so long will bhakti poetry be needed for devotional rebuttal.
more on this soon! i am hoping for these to be published in 2024 or 2025.
i extend my gratitude to my extraordinary professors: my supervisors Dr. Jodie Kim & Rosalind Harvey; Professor David Morley, as well as Dr. Chantal Wright, who generously & expertly encouraged and guided me, as well as expressed genuine interest in my work - interest which i especially appreciated when my work took unconventional routes!
as this chapter ends, a new one at Edinburgh begins! onward!

february language goals (+ january review) ❤️
hi everyone! ♡
a quick life update, as always, before i start; i finally had my graduation ceremony back in London (pictured above) which was quite nice (the food they offered was surprisingly good too) but cold af. i’m back in germany till further notice. i do have a (remote) job now, luckily enough a company that i worked for last summer contacted me to work for them again!! i honestly don’t know why i didn’t get as much done as i thought i would of have. :( i did still help out in the family business quite often this month but since i got a new job it decreased so i only help out now once every other week. hopefully i get more of active revision and learning done this month.
my current languages:
french (A2)
dutch (A1)
edo
it might not be the right move but nonetheless, i will be adding edo to my language rotation till further notice.
but lets review my january language goals ♡:
maintain a 30 days duolingo & busuu streak (59 days on duolingo & 22 days on buusu)
write and finish the digital journal entry (notion) about my birthday trip in both french & dutch (not completed)
work through ‘Niederländisch Wort für Wort’ to and incl. chapter ‘Dieses & Jenes’ (not completed)
finish ‘UNIT TWO: Modal auxiliary verbs’ in ‘Dutch Basic’ (not completed)
write down all dutch vocabularies up to and incl. the numbers on digital dialects (website) (not completed)
write down all french vocabularies up to and incl. the numbers on digital dialects (website) (not completed)
finish ‘Articles’ in ‘CliffsQuickReview French 1’ (not completed)
write my first entry in my workbook about basic information about myself in both french & dutch (not completed)
watch 5 easyfrech & easydutch youtube videos (yes)
watch the remaining episodes of s1 miraculous (netflix) (yes)
as you can see i did not do much of any active learning this month just passively, however, i will keep a note of these goals and still try to do them.
here are my february language goals ♡:
maintain a 30 days duolingo & busuu streak
watch 5 easyfrench & easydutch youtube videos
watch the remaining episodes of s1 represent (netflix)
watch the remaining episodes of s1 misfit: die serie (netflix)
start watching another french series (netflix) e.g. ‘the circle: france’
start watching another dutch series (netflix) e.g. ‘die goldene stunde’
work through the lessons 1 - 5 in ‘The Complete French Self-Study Guide’ (eBook)
start to watch ‘Learn French in 5 Days # Day 1’ up until ‘Le verb s’appeler (32:27)’ (youtube)
create a language learning plan for edo
watch the 9 edo videos save in the watch later playlist (youtube) and take notes
watch 1 edo movie
listen to all episodes of ‘Let’s Edo’lize it: An Edo Language Podcast’ (spotify)
listen to all episodes of ‘The Great Benin Empire’ (spotify)
start the side blog
i was also thinking of creating a side blog but only for language learning but i will only be posting content about african languages, nigerian languages to be specific bc i noticed there is not a lot of info on certain languages, so it would be nice to gather them and put them in one place for future references. i will still be posting my language goals on this blog tho.
also, i know i mention i will post my past & current resources list, which i will do but i still need to edit it bc it's kind of all over the place, either way that will be my next post!
best wishes,
mars the prinzess xx
