"I can speak from experience about the great divide between the excitement of acquisition to the travails of a book’s arrival in the warehouse. I can attest to being privy to, or being the one to speak up in, meetings on the need for sensitivity around the material being discussed. I’ve seen the names of Black people killed by police—names that were and remain hashtags alongside #BlackLivesMatter and #SayHerName—spelled wrong in books while the names of the white 'founding fathers' were immediately fact checked. I heard from teams repping Black authors’ books, books granted scarce marketing budgets because the assumption is that these books will either “find their audience or they won’t.” It is both heartbreaking and infuriating to deal with, as a creator or as the editor who believes wholeheartedly in the work and the author entrusting you with their vision. It is deflating to have the same conversations over and over and then not see the impact of the emotional labor; the carefully crafted emails; the endless talks and promises that still broach more questions about how staff and authors are supported, the transparency of the business at large, and how work by BIPOC authors is ultimately received."

My Jesus. As this school year closes this is probably the most accurate representation of my current feelings. I’m elated to be walking in purpose, pursuing my graduate degree at my illustrious alma @howard1867! Pero I’m also equally as exhausted as the title of this book suggests... _________ Racism does erode the minds, bodies, + spirits of Black folx! Mine included. It’s no secret many Black women hold the weight of the world on their shoulders. It’s no secret that often times no one is helping us to carry that weight. I thank Jesus for my support system. My friends, who take care of me way better than I’ve ever taken care of myself. My family, who teaches me something new about myself everyday. Grace + gratitude are in abundance. _________ Many Black women don’t have time nor the capacity to reflect enough on their lives to understand where their trauma comes from. Unfortunately, it’s the combination of that trauma, food deserts, toxic cleaning products, mass incarceration,+ the host of other disadvantages America has set up to destroy Black folx, that are causing Black women to pick up the slack + kill ourselves in the process. ________ If there’s anything I’ve learned from this 1st year of grad school is that rest is ESSENTIAL. Anxiety can be debilitating. And neurodivergence is much more common than I thought. 28?! Where has the time gone? Last year my birthday was the last hurrah before COVID-19 rocked our world forever. I was applying to grad school + was hopeful about my journey into this career path God revealed to me! _________ Fast forward to last Wednesday (my actual birthday) now I am in grad school but I was so busy with my studies that I couldn’t even post about making it to 28. I say making it because anyone that is alive in 2021 is indeed blessed. I myself had COVID-19 back in December + the psychological trauma alone is enough to kill you. I am blessed to have survived + not have had as severe symptoms as the others that have passed on in our country (500k+ & counting). Many of them Black + Brown. ________ While I may not be fighting evil by moonlight I am stepping into one of many roles I will play in this life. Social work is God’s work. Fighting for justice + empowering marginalized communities is what Jesus is all about! My path of ensuring justice for all is through the empowerment of the Black family.
