March is national #kidney month, and the 10th is world kidney day! “Did you know? 37 million people in the United States are estimated to have chronic kidney disease (#CKD). As many as 9 in 10 people are not aware that they have CKD. If you have #diabetes or high blood pressure you are at higher risk for developing #kidneydisease. Three ways you can build your personalized path to better kidney care: Be an active participant in your care. Work with your health care team to create a treatment plan that fits your lifestyle, mobility, health status, and dietary needs. Follow your care plan. Take #medicine as prescribed and stay up to date on vaccines. Build a kidney healthy lifestyle. Try to incorporate healthy habits into your daily schedule. This can include healthy foods and beverages you enjoy, physical activity like walking or taking the stairs to help you stay active and manage your weight, or a sleep routine that helps you get enough rest.” To learn more, follow the link below: https://www.niddk.nih.gov/health-information/community-health-outreach/national-kidney-month https://www.instagram.com/p/Ca7p3CXl4-j/?utm_medium=tumblr

March is Self-Injury awareness month. ⚠️ TRIGGER WARNING: “#SelfInjury is a deliberate, non-#suicidal behavior that inflicts physical harm on one's body to relieve emotional distress. Self-injury has a paradoxical effect in that the pain self-inflicted actually sets off an endorphin rush, relieving the self-harmer from deep distress. It's important to note that self-injury does not involve a conscious intent to die by #suicide - and as such, the clinical term for this behavior is called Non-Suicidal Self Injury (#NSSI).” Learn more at: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/two-takes-depression/202203/march-is-self-injury-awareness-month?amp Crisis Hotline Information: https://www.apa.org/topics/crisis-hotlines https://www.instagram.com/p/Ca7pZT0FSAA/?utm_medium=tumblr

March is Cerebral Palsy Awareness month March 25 is US National Cerebral Palsy Awareness Day “#Cerebralpalsy refers to a group of #neurological disorders that appear in #infancy or early #childhood and permanently affect body movement and muscle coordination Cerebral palsy (#CP) is caused by damage to or abnormalities inside the developing #brain that disrupt the brain’s ability to control movement and maintain posture and balance. The term cerebralrefers to the brain; palsy refers to the loss or impairment of motor function. Cerebral palsy affects the motor area of the brain’s outer layer (called the #cerebral cortex), the part of the brain that directs muscle movement. In some cases, the cerebral motor cortex hasn’t developed normally during fetal growth. In others, the damage is a result of injury to the brain either before, during, or after birth. In either case, the damage is not repairable and the #disabilities that result are permanent.” Learn more at: https://www.ninds.nih.gov/Disorders/Patient-Caregiver-Education/Hope-Through-Research/Cerebral-Palsy-Hope-Through-Research https://www.instagram.com/p/Ca7o_jJlPEd/?utm_medium=tumblr

March 8 is #Breast #Implant #Illness #Awareness Day “A number of patients and clinicians use the term “#breastimplantillness” or “BII” to describe a variety of systemic symptoms which may be reported by some women following reconstruction or augmentation with breast implants. They include, but are not limited to, fatigue, problems with memory or concentration (“brain fog”), joint and muscle pain, hair loss, weight changes and anxiety/depression. The appearance of such symptoms has been reported with all types of breast implants regardless of filling, shape or surface characteristic, and their onset anywhere from immediately after implantation to years later. Although some #women report improvement or resolution of symptoms following removal of the implants, the cause of the symptoms and the degree to which they may be related to the implants are unclear at the current time. Research continues to be performed to better understand any potential association with breast implants. Currently, however, BII is not recognized as a formal #medical diagnosis and there are no specific tests or recognized criteria to define or characterize it.” To learn more, follow the link below: https://www.fda.gov/medical-devices/breast-implants/medical-device-reports-systemic-symptoms-women-breast-implants https://www.instagram.com/p/Ca46tRSOIg-/?utm_medium=tumblr

March 8-14 is National #Pulmonary #Rehabilitation Week “What is #pulmonaryrehabilitation? Pulmonary rehabilitation, also known as pulmonary rehab or PR, is a program for people who have #chronic (ongoing) breathing problems. It can help improve your ability to function and quality of life. PR does not replace your #medical #treatment. Instead, you use them together. PR is often an outpatient program that you do in a hospital or clinic. Some people have PR in their homes. You work with a team of health care providers to find ways to lessen your symptoms, increase your ability to exercise, and make it easier to do your daily activities.” To learn more about pulmonary rehab, and about certain disorders that may require this, follow the link below: https://medlineplus.gov/pulmonaryrehabilitation.html https://www.instagram.com/p/Ca46gR2uwn_/?utm_medium=tumblr

March is #multiplesclerosis awareness month. “Multiple #sclerosis (#MS) is a potentially disabling #disease of the brain and spinal cord (central nervous system). In MS, the #immunesystem attacks the protective sheath (myelin) that covers nerve fibers and causes communication problems between your brain and the rest of your body. Eventually, the disease can cause permanent damage or deterioration of the nerves. Signs and symptoms of MS vary widely and depend on the amount of nerve damage and which nerves are affected. Some people with severe MS may lose the ability to walk independently or at all, while others may experience long periods of remission without any new symptoms. There's no cure for multiple sclerosis. However, #treatments can help speed recovery from attacks, modify the course of the disease and manage symptoms.” Learn more at: https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/multiple-sclerosis/symptoms-causes/syc-20350269 https://www.instagram.com/p/Ca0SRNFvcZu/?utm_medium=tumblr

March 6 is World #Lymphedema #Awareness Day! “Lymphedema refers to tissue swelling caused by an accumulation of protein-rich fluid that's usually drained through the body's #lymphatic system. It most commonly affects the arms or legs, but can also occur in the chest wall, abdomen, neck and genitals. #Lymphnodes are an important part of your lymphatic system. Lymphedema can be caused by #cancer treatments that remove or damage your lymph nodes. Any type of problem that blocks the drainage of lymph fluid can cause lymphedema. Severe cases of lymphedema can affect the ability to move the affected limb, increase the risks of skin #infections and #sepsis, and can lead to skin changes and breakdown. Treatment may include compression bandages, massage, compression stockings, sequential pneumatic pumping, careful skin care and, rarely, surgery to remove swollen tissue or to create new drainage routes.” For more information, visit the following link: https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/lymphedema/symptoms-causes/syc-20374682 https://www.instagram.com/p/CayfQaOMv9w/?utm_medium=tumblr

March 6-12 is World #Glaucoma Week “Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, the health of which is vital for good #vision. This damage is often caused by an abnormally high pressure in your #eye. Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of #blindness for people over the age of 60. It can occur at any age but is more common in older adults. Many forms of glaucoma have no warning signs. The effect is so gradual that you may not notice a change in vision until the condition is at an advanced stage. Because vision loss due to glaucoma can't be recovered, it's important to have regular eye exams that include measurements of your eye pressure so a diagnosis can be made in its early stages and treated appropriately. If glaucoma is recognized early, vision loss can be slowed or prevented. If you have the condition, you'll generally need treatment for the rest of your life.” To learn more about symptoms, causes, and treatments, follow the link below: https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/glaucoma/symptoms-causes/syc-20372839 https://www.instagram.com/p/CayeYlQM0tx/?utm_medium=tumblr

March is #Endometriosis #awareness month. “Endometriosis is an often painful disorder in which tissue similar to the tissue that normally lines the inside of your #uterus — the endometrium — grows outside your uterus. Endometriosis most commonly involves your #ovaries, fallopian tubes and the tissue lining your pelvis. Rarely, endometrial-like tissue may be found beyond the area where pelvic organs are located. With endometriosis, the endometrial-like tissue acts as endometrial tissue would — it thickens, breaks down and bleeds with each #menstrual cycle. But because this tissue has no way to exit your body, it becomes trapped. When endometriosis involves the ovaries, #cysts called endometriomas may form. Surrounding tissue can become irritated, eventually developing scar tissue and adhesions — bands of fibrous tissue that can cause pelvic tissues and organs to stick to each other. Endometriosis can cause pain — sometimes severe — especially during menstrual periods. #Fertility problems also may develop. Fortunately, effective treatments are available.” To learn more about symptoms, causes, risks, and treatments, follow the link below: https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/endometriosis/symptoms-causes/syc-20354656 https://www.instagram.com/p/Cau70FVOpzU/?utm_medium=tumblr

March is Developmental #Disabilities Awareness Month! “#Developmentaldisabilities include limitations in function resulting from disorders of the developing nervous system. These limitations manifest during infancy or childhood as delays in reaching developmental milestones or as lack of function in one or multiple domains, including cognition, motor performance, vision, hearing and speech, and #behavior. To varying degrees, the causes of many other #neurological and #psychiatric disorders not typically designated as developmental disabilities may also be traced to early #neurodevelopment. For several of the disorders discussed in subsequent chapters—specifically #epilepsy, #depression, and #schizophrenia—evidence indicates such a causal relationship. The clinical features of developmental disabilities are variable in severity as well as in the specific areas of function that are limited. Brief descriptions of the clinical features of each of the broad categories of developmental disability are provided below. It may be noted that children with developmental disabilities are often affected in multiple domains of function because of the nature and extent of brain impairment or increased susceptibility to other causes of #disability (e.g., #malnutrition, #trauma, #infection) among children with a single disability.” To learn more, follow the link below: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK223473/?report=classic Follow us on FB! https://www.instagram.com/p/CauyxL4O68-/?utm_medium=tumblr

March is Deep Vein Thrombosis (#DVT) Awareness Month. “ #Deepveinthrombosis (DVT) occurs when a #bloodclot (#thrombus) forms in one or more of the deep veins in your body, usually in your legs. Deep vein thrombosis can cause leg pain or swelling but also can occur with no symptoms. You can get DVT if you have certain medical conditions that affect how your blood clots. A blood clot in your legs can also happen if you don't move for a long time, such as after you have surgery or an accident, when you're traveling a long distance, or when you're on bed rest.” To learn more about symptoms, causes, risks, and prevention, please follow the link below: https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/deep-vein-thrombosis/symptoms-causes/syc-20352557 Follow us on Facebook @daaconnections https://www.instagram.com/p/Cas7ExkMwd3/?utm_medium=tumblr
