My headache is almost gone.
I noticed social media and learning things on my phone exasperate it.
Maybe I should be off my phone for a while. But how? I need to look up recipes. And post on my blog.

Well, after some research, I found out that babies who are not weaned do not sleep “through the night” and that it is atypical behavior to do so.
And “sleep through the night” means 6 hours with the expectation that the baby will wake 1-3 times during that period.
Sooo… what I’m experiencing is normal and no need to try to solve this impossible, apparently non-problem.
On a super positive note: I can finally stop having nightmares about math tests as a way for my subconscious to sort this out :D

The days of the week fascinate me to no end.
Let me nerd out for a few minutes… After Sunday, it get’s… interesting.
Sunday → Sun ~ so technically means “Sun day”
Monday → Mon → Moon ~ so technically means “Moon day”
Tuesday → Tues → Tiws the god of war, ruling the planet mars ~ so technically means “fire day”
Wednesday → Wednes → Woden, a god of Mercury, the water star ~ so technically means “water day”
Thursday → Thurs → Thor, the god of a lot of things including trees ~ so technically means “Tree day”
Friday → Fri → Frig, god of Venus, the gold planet → so technically means “gold day”
Saturday → Sat → Saturn, the god of agriculture → so technically means “Earth day” or “agriculture day”
I love stuff like this because it shows how connected we really are. Language is so fun!

I was so naive about sleep post partum.
I thought…
+ Sleepless nights would be a short, 2-week thing with the occasional regression here and there.
+ My weekends or days of sleeping in were over, but that was it.
+ My baby would sleep through the night - a good 8-12 hours, eventually but definitely by now...
+ My husband sleeping in or taking undisturbed naps wouldn’t bother me.
+ I could “sleep when the baby sleeps!”
I think the sleep deprivation is really getting to me in ways I can’t fully describe.
My baby, almost 1 years old now, wakes every 45 mins to an hour. It’s the rare occasion to sleep a good 2 hours.
I can sleep when she naps, sometimes, but that means all of “me time” (which is spent while being nap-trapped), is gone out the window.
I feel like I need to rethink how I’m approaching everything. How I talk. How I deal with this situation.
But I’m so exhausted from months of not sleeping more than 3-5 fragmented hours a day.
I had no idea the sleep deprivation would be… this.
Well, the baby is asleep now, so I’d better get some rest.

I had a realization that parents would not get rid of the very best children’s books.
Children’s books, bought for and loved by a child are usually very loved or placed somewhere in the home as memorabilia.
So, by this logic, perhaps any picture books that are on sale as used are not actually worth getting at all.
And I am also cautious that any and all books I purchase for my child can and will be used against me in the course of “Again, again!” and “One more time!”s. With this knowledge I go forth to curate a home library of only the very best books - which is high subjective but not 100% so.
I have hope in my ability.
Wish me luck!

In other news, I have been reading more, getting outside more, and baking.. *ahem* more.
I was looking for a book about a witch who doesn’t realize she’s a witch. Really, I want a book about a stay at home mom who does magic but in very subtle ways. Like, when she bakes bread and her family eats it, they can ward off sickness for x number of hours. When she finishes cleaning the dishes before bed, she wards off evil spirits and bad dreams for all members of the household for the whole of the night.
Because, I think in a lot of those small actions, we do perform a sort of magic.
But, alas I have yet to find such a book. I’ve settled on “The Dark Lord of Derkholm” which is proving to be a delightful read. DWJ can write characters and dialogue that’s witty and charming in a way that I have yet to experience with other authors.
After many years of not touching a fiction book, it is nice to escape into one.
I’ve not forgotten how I used to love it, but reading new books can be filled with trepidation and an uneasiness that things will not work out as I want them to, or how I feel they should.
But I feel at ease while reading this one, it has a taste of familiarity to it that I can’t quite put my finger on.

Today, I studied some N3 grammar and I listened to all the sentences where audio was available. (This learning app relies on many native speakers to record audio, so I am guessing they can pick and choose which sentences they wish to record).
Well, 5 of the 6 sentences had audio.
This sentence was the only one that didn’t and…

I mean, I think I’d skip this one, too.

I’m planning my first airplane trip since 2019.
You can see me glowing from a mile away.
This is a precursor to a much bigger trip later on.
Aw, life is so grand when there’s travel to be had!

Update:
They got one of my requests in already!! It’s a book by とよたかずひこ先生.
We absolutely loved 「電車に乗って」 by the same author.
These books were published awhile ago so when I made the request, I had very little expectation that they would/could get it.
To my delight, they were able to get it for the collection & it is on hold for me as we speak!
Just put in my first ever purchase request to my local library!
My goal is to commandeer a whole shelf to Japanese children’s books (right now, a solemn selection of 10 or so books).
Wish me luck!

Tech in Dreams
Recently I’ve been using my phone in my dreams, or other technology like elevators.
My phone-in-dreams doesn’t work properly, though.
I’ll try to make a phone call and I’ll click on the phone app only for the app to change completely or when I do manage to get to the call button, it goes to another screen.
Very fascinating as I’ve used a smart phone since I was an older teen, and I know how it’s meant to work.
My subconscious?, however, is not quite sure which gives me hope, in a funny way.
If my subconscious still isn’t aware of how this piece of technology works, maybe I’m not as addicted as I once thought…
The unhopeful bit is that, after years of not seeing tech in my dreams, my phone is the first to make an appearance…
Idk
Win some, lose some?

Pure Imagination
This week’s ear worm.
An almost 30-year old movie at the time I first watched it, the 1971 “Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory”’s magic was so inspiring.
Upon listening to the original song “Pure Imagination” recently, I realized why the film was so magical.
The music.
Sometimes it’s just a phrase or a beat, but cover songs don’t do the aforementioned justice.
Gene Wilder, Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley made something unrepeatable.
Listening to it with fresh, adult ears, I know why the kid version was so enamored - the phrasing, the deliberation, yet leaving room for all the in between to seep through but also holding everything together in a warm embrace…
My baby actually started smiling when it began playing and I sang and danced along.
“If you want to view paradise, simply look around and view it. Anything you want to, do it. Want to change the world? There’s nothing to it.”

Neighbors
I grew up across the street from a girl my age. She was one of many on my street, but the only one that I couldn’t consider my “friend” because, well, she picked on me a fair bit.
She made fun of my short hair, often telling me that I didn’t “have the flip” (the thing long hair does when tied back in a ponytail).
She would obviously exclude me from playing a game that everyone in the street was also playing, telling me I had to be in time out.
She never invited me to her birthdays (but everyone else on the street was).
In a lot of ways, I was scared and jealous of her. I wanted to be cool enough to be her friend at the time, then one day I didn’t care.
I even got “the flip” by growing out my hair, just to walk around the neighborhood in hopes of “showing off” to her that I was cool! Cool enough to be in her click…
But now I think about her.
Where is she?
Is she married?
Does she have kids?
What kind of work does she do?
What kind of healing has she done, if any?
Who is she now?
What’s her story?
And:
If we re-connected now, would we become friends?
Because most friends I had as a kid I either no longer know or we haven’t talked in years. I can’t even say that of the friends I have kept this long that we would would still be compatible together.
But how about this girl I once knew who wouldn’t consider me a friend 20+ years ago?
I wonder if our lives are now similar in a way that would make us relate to each other and not see each other as competition.
I wonder…

Pumpkin Pie
Actually Acorn Squash Pie
Success!
Tumblr media
My husband liked it (I could tell because he ate most of it when he came home from work - I woke up the next day to a “instructions say to leave one for wife’s breakfast” piece, hooray!)
Anyway, I made this with acorn squash that my husband cooked:
Tumblr media
It came out a bit too savory for me, so I know I should have added the full amount of sugar (I don’t enjoy overly-sweet things so I often err on the side of caution and use a couple tablespoons or so less sugar). Another note about the recipe: I definitely had to add more than a tablespoon of cornstarch (perhaps 3?). I used plant-based heavy whipping cream, and I actually topped it with chocolate.
The end result, as far as looks, really reminded me of a pie from a movie and I cannot figure out which one…
Here’s the recipe I used:
I’m really wanting to make an actual (canned) pumpkin pie next week…
