It's International Women's Day again.

I only receive flowers on this day. And each year men from my family give me a bouquet just because it's women's day, I say "Thank you but I don't want flowers. This is not what I want."

And they get upset.

I don't care how many more times I will upset them. I want equal rights. I want for femicide to stop. I want to be able to walk on the street at night without fearing death. One third of retired women receive no form of pension. I want pension for them. I want refuge for the women who are facing harassment. I want the pay gap to disappear. I want genital mutilation to stop. I want abortion rights for everyone.

This is what I want, not fucking flowers.

At the age of nine, I knew I was different from the other kids,

All the girls knew what they liked, what they had to aim for,

But not me.

There was no name for what I felt,

It was a desire, wrapping itself around my throat,

Obstructing the air in my lungs,

slowly suffocating me into lethargy.

When I was about 10 years old, I was terrified of sleeping.

I remember spending endless sleepless nights dreaming of tomorrow,

All I could think was:

"Please, God, let me have this one more night."

I was so scared that if I fell asleep,

I would go to hell.

When I was 12, I was sent to church to get the devils out of my soul,

They told me: "Pray and you will be heard."

I stumbled along, slipping on my varnished shoes, walking to the altar,

I was never told the name of what I felt,

Only that it was wrong.

At 13, I no longer needed to be told what to do.

I knelt beside the bed in my blue pyjamas,

begging Father to take it out of me,

And no matter how much I pleaded, there was never an answer.

Now, at 16, I'm still afraid to say the word,

I feel the spirits lurking, watching me,

Waiting only for a falter to pull me into the abyss.

When I was younger, I wondered why the Lord loved everyone but me.

And I learnt over time that,

God does love me, but not enough to save me.
