The chills dude.. This is so amazing!!!

Fuck it, everyone’s revising Greek Mythology, so imma do it for Ares.

So, Ares, right? Giant dickhead God who even the other Olympians hate. The one God who Zeus, that shape-shifting rapist, says he can’t stand. Violent and dangerous, father of Fear and Terror. Everyone hates this guy. We should to. Right?

Or, maybe its more complicated than that.

When he was a boy, the legitimate son of Zeus and Hera, he was thrilled to become the God of War. To be the spear and shield of Olympus. To protect his family.

But time passes. Every soul that died passed through him. Their rage, their hate, their pain.

Their fear.

Even worse are the survivors. Those who go home with the screams of their comrades in their ears. 

Ares became withdrawn. Quiet. The partying, fun-loving Olympians can’t understand it. Just let loose Ares! Have some fun! They don’t understand. Ares feels so very different from them. So separate. Alone. Suddenly he can’t walk among these shallow, empty things called Gods without remembering the hundreds of thousands butchered and worse. Killed in his name. Their name.

Aphrodite understands a bit. Love and war have more in common than one might think. He finds some comfort with her, and she with him, especially after that damned blacksmith held Hera captive and forced Aphrodite to marry him as ransom. For that alone Ares would tear apart his brother, if not for the will of Zeus.

But all this he can bear. He is, after all, the sword and shield of Olympus. Even if he can never truly walk among them. Even if he can never truly be one of them.

Then, of course, she comes along.

Athena. His thrice damned half-sister. A brand new shiny War God, and this one also of Wisdom. A War God who is likeable, who the other Olympians can root for. 

Resentment turns into something blacker, that borders on hate. Like that he is cast aside. The son and rightful heir of Zeus, cast aside like trash, for this owl bitch that sprung from his skull.

Well fine. They can have her.

Ares retreats farther from the Gods. More aloof, but this time by choice. More and more he keeps the company of mortals, not just the bright and shiny heroes that Athena likes. The common foot-slogging soldier. The man with a spear and fear in his heart. Eventually the only God he keeps consistent company of his Aphrodite and his children.

Ares will always be among mortals. As long as there are swords taken up against men Ares will be with them, not playing from the sidelines with the other Gods. Ares will give courage to the hopeless soldier, strength to the child, determined to defend his home.

When all other Gods have abandoned you, Ares will be there.

YES YES and YES

I was talking with a friend recently about Greek Mythology, and while talking about the gods I asked both them and myself this question:

Why is Ares the god of war when Athena is, too?

I’d seen many posts summarise it as “Ares is the god of war, Athena is the god of Smart War”, but that never made much sense to me. What was even the point of having Ares around?

I figured, maybe he was originally worshipped in a different capacity and he had a war epithet which gained more popularity than his others.

Intrigued, I searched, and things got weirder - Zeus is the god of lightning, skies, kings; Poseidon the god of the sea, water, horses; Athena is the god of knowledge, maths, war; Ares is the god of…war.

Just war.

I continued looking into it - he was kidnapped, either as an infant or an adult and wasn’t rescued for a year - he is a coward, despite being the god of war - he is bloodthirsty, violent, cruel, yet in the few stories he appears in he suffers humiliation - nobody likes him, not even his parents - he does not choose sides.

Even Hades isn’t hated that much. And what was with him and Athena?

Athena is the god of battle strategies, she is level headed, noble, and just. She is the god of war.

…but war isn’t like that, is it?

War is not born from nobility, it is born from hatred, which is born from fear cowardice. It is bloodthirsty, and it is plentiful and drown-able, regardless of who it is spilled from, never choosing a side. It is bruised skin and broken bones.

Athena is there when the bright eyed young man is being deployed into his first mission, excited to save the world.

Who stands there when that same boy watches as his best friend bleeds out, as he realises he was hypnotised into a patriotic fairy tale of heroism that was weaved by men who couldn’t care if he lived or died?

Who stands there when the blood of strangers intermingles on wet concrete, the breaths of rivals, fuelled by hatred born from none but the fear of the other, dissipate into the night?

Who stands there when nobility has been stripped, when temples have been torn down and badges torn off, when stripes on a sleeve mean nothing?

An uncomfortable truth, repeatedly trying to get the upper hand against the romanticisation of war, or genocide, calamity and carnage.

An angry god, repeatedly trying to get the upper hand against the goddess that represents the safe lie, the preferred delusion.

A being born between two hateful deities, conflicted and abhorrent; both violent and fearful.

Ares is the true god of war.

i was talking abt posally w one of my friends so currently i’ve been thinking abt them a lot and just like. poseidon is so In Love w sally it’s so ridiculously beautiful i can talk about it for hours bc he is the literal OCEAN it is his very essence his very existence he is the tide that changes constantly and the gentle calm before a storm and when u think abt it the ocean is actually Not loyal at all bc when ur out in the ocean it’s just you vs. the water. whatever battle ur fighting it doesn’t matter bc the ocean is and always will be ur Greatest Enemy. when it loves it loves dangerously, grasping at ships it loves and tears it apart so that it’s remains will forever stay on the ocean floor and it hides the beauty of fishes behind the monstrosities that haunt mortals because that is how the ocean loves, possessively and all consuming but POSEIDON W SALLY …. he saw her and he saw her eyes and the gentleness in her soul and the soft way she would speak and he fell in love and he loved her for so long even if he knew it was dangerous simply bc he couldn’t help it AND HE OFFERED TO CHANGE THE TIDE FOR HER HE OFFERED TO BUILD HER A PALACE UNDER THE SEA poseidon loved her so gently so beautifully so passionately that the waves crashing against her and keeping her under wasn’t enough to show the gentleness and depth his love held so he offered to preserve her forever, keep her with him for as long as he possibly could. just. think of it the god of the seas offering to stop the tide for you and calling u a queen amongst mortals as if he wished and had prayed to the fates that she was the one destined for him the one destined to rule beside him even though deep down he knows they aren’t because gods don’t have souls, think of him and the pain in his heart because he knows that he could never make her immortal because if he did they’d become a tragedy …. I can’t take this. Sally Jackson could walk into the ocean in the middle of a raging storm, nothing but her and the water and she could utter one word, one word and the oceans would stop for her because how could it not listen to the one voice it truly loved ??? the way he is just so naturally drawn to her not really like the moon and the sea but more like one who is from water is drawn to someone who is made from water as well like how ur just so naturally drawn from someone cut from the same rock as u and for the first time in eternity poseidon felt human because of her he could experience the way mortals love, completely and passionately and fully and just so unbearingly fragile they are SOULMATES U HEAR ME SOULMATES

This is...wow.

the waves crashed against the sea, the sunrise painting it gold. sally breathed in the salty air. she’s so much older now than when she first visited it. so young and naive, enamoured with the sea and the promises it brought.

a hand wrapped around her waist, steady and warm, and she sank immediately to his touch, a small smile growing on her lips. “good morning,” she whispered softly, brushing away a few strands of hair from his face. “how are you today my love?”

“was lonely when i realised you weren’t in bed anymore,” he answered, placing a soft kiss on her neck, sea green eyes sparkling with happiness and so much love sally wanted to drown in it. “want to spend every morning with you,” he continued, kissing her on the lips.

it’s slow and languid, no rushing and desperate hand holding. they learn to take their time now, savouring each moment, each kiss, each flash of a smile. “i want to grow old with you,” he finishes, pulling away, resting his forehead against hers.

her eyes snap to him, wide and full of wonder and adoration. “you do?” she asks, and she’s 20 again, voice shaking as she whispers no to every single one of poseidon’s offers. the vulnerability is there again, and she pulls him closer, trying to convince herself that he isn’t just a figment of her imagination.

“i am. i wish to spend every day with you, my love. every morning, every sunset, every night. i’ll have you as long as you allow me to.”

she smiles at him before cradling his jaw, kissing his forehead, his cheeks, and finally, his lips. “and if i say i want you for all eternity?”

sally couldn’t describe the expression on his face, timeless as it was, the passion of a god and the love of a mortal mixing together, and there’s a small voice in the back of her head that whispers ‘he only looks at you like that.’

“then i’ll grow old with you,” he whispered, caressing her cheeks softly. “i’ll grow old with you, sally jackson, and i’ll love you for as long as i can.”

Yessss, you can't help but love em

I just love Sally and Poseidon. The fact that Sally was probably in her mid 20s and she had no family, maybe a few friend, working multiple part time jobs and she just wanted to spend a summer at the beach. and one day she’s just chilling on the beach and she sees a hot man, a literal Greek god with a trident maybe assisting a beached sea creature and she’s drawn to him. They spend the whole summers together on the beach, in town, in the bars and Poseidon knows he should walk away because he’s so close to breaking his oath but he looks at her and he just doesn’t care anymore.
