When you were three, your father’s life was taken in front of your eyes.
It was dinnertime and your father was feeding you in all the ways he could think of; the airplane, the choo choo train, etc. Everything was disrupted when a sudden scream sounded from outside your home. Your father, being a trained soldier, gave your mom a look and kissed her temple before running out the front door. Your mom ran to the door and you followed suit, hopping off your chair and curiously looking at whatever it was that made such a noise.
In the middle of the streets was a kid that was much older than you. She was surrounded by some soldiers in uniform, and some people, like your father, without. Her hands were up and her eyes were wide, head snapping around as she glanced at all of the soldiers.
The next thing you saw was your father running towards the girl, only for her to turn and shoot a flame out of her palms at him. Your mother let out a shriek and fell to her knees, pulling you to face away from the events happening outside of your home. As she cried into your shoulder and held you tight, you turned your head back only to see the child being dragged away by multiple soldiers.
Your mother, being the strong woman she was, never let you know that she was upset about it after that day. Instead, she decided to honor his legacy and sign up to be a soldier just like him. She wanted to make sure that nothing like that happened to anyone ever again. Your mom finished her training and officially became a soldier when you turned five years old.
Since you were born, you were the best kid (or so your mother told you). You were always well behaved, you never threw a tantrum, you were always polite and asked for what you wanted rather than demanded. That was probably how you managed to hide your abilities for so long...
It had been a long day for a seven year old. Your teacher had assigned you two whole pages of addition and subtraction, you tripped during playtime, and you missed your favorite show on TV. So that only meant that you were especially grumpy towards the pre-teen babysitter that your mom hired to look after you.
“Get back here you little brat!” The prepubescent boy exclaimed, chasing you around the living room.
“Never!” You shouted back, running towards the front door.
It was a hard day and all you wanted was a warm hug from your mom. You knew that it was nearing twilight, meaning your mom was almost home. Maybe you could find her as she was driving home.
But then the oily-pimple-faced-voice-cracking boy managed to catch up to you and picked you up. You started kicking and screaming, doing whatever you could to have the boy let go.
“Calm down you weasel!”
You were so frustrated that you shouted as loud as you could, “Let go of me!” Your babysitter’s arms went limp around you, dropping you to the floor. “Hey! You-” When you looked up, you saw the boy’s eyes become a beautiful electric pink. You were only snapped out of your amazement when the pink faded, and the boy’s eyes rolled back before he fell to the floor.
“Y/n?” Your mother’s voice called tentatively from the door. She seemed to have stopped in her tracks, eyes wide as she stared at the unconscious boy.
“Mom!” You ran to your mother, burying your face into her shirt. Your eyes were brimming with tears as memories of your father that one fateful day flashed through your mind. You had just killed a person! You were just as bad as the kid that had a meltdown! “Mommy I’m scared!”
“Sh, sh, sh,” Your mom soothed. “It’s okay, y/n you didn’t do anything. It’s okay, he’s just sleeping.”
After calming you down, your mother brought you into your room and told you to stay put. You sniffed the snot that threatened to run down your nose and listened to her, too scared to do anything else.
The next day, you woke up to the sound of rustling all around your room. You saw your mom frantically packing your clothes into a duffel bag. Sleepily rubbing your eyes, you looked to the clock and saw that it was 5 am, long before you were supposed to get ready for school.
“Mom? What are you doing?” You asked.
“We have to go, sweetie. Pack only the things that you absolutely need, okay?” Your mom replied in a voice more serious than you’ve ever heard before. She turned back into your closet and started packing some pants.
“Why?” You were starting to tear up. You didn’t want to leave your life at home. All of your friends were here, all of your toys were here...you couldn’t go.
Your mom, seeming to sense your tears with her motherly instincts, turned around and held your face.
“You’ll understand when you’re older, sweetheart. I’ll explain everything to you when I know you’ll understand, but right now, it’s not safe here. We have to go, okay?”
“Mommy you’re scaring me,” You admitted, hiccuping as your mom pulled you into a hug.
“I know, I know. It’s okay, sweetie. Just pack your things, we’re going to leave in a couple of hours. I have to go to work for a little bit, but I’ll be right back.”
“Okay mommy.”
You continued to pack your things, looking for everything important you could think of. Your mom left the house after she made you some breakfast and promised that she’d be right back.
It had been a while since your mom made that promise and you were starting to get scared. Tears started building up in your eyes and you ran back up to your room. You decided to listen to what your mom said and continue packing. You ran through all of your favorite items in your head until one suddenly came to your mind. Your dad’s necklace!
You scurried over to the pink and blue jewelry box you had right by the window and opened the first little drawer. You were about to pull out the dog tag necklace-that all soldiers get when they complete their training-when you heard the door open. Dropping the necklace, you ran out of your room and saw your mom looking through the peephole of your closed door. There was something about her that looked more panicked than she was before.
“Wha-”
“We have to go now.”
Quickly, your mom ran upstairs and grabbed all of the bags before dragging you out the bag door by your wrist. The two of you were in your backyard, making your way towards the gate. You turned to send one last look at your house, but upon seeing the pink and blue decoration on the side of the wall, you remembered your necklace.
“Wait, mommy! We have to get my necklace! I have to go get it!” You cried, pulling on your wrist in her grip.
“What? No, sweetheart, we don’t have time.”
“But it was dad’s necklace!”
Your mother stopped pulling you. She stood frozen for a moment before letting out a sigh and crouching down in front of you.
“Stay right here for me, okay? I’ll get the necklace for you, but I need you to hide. Make sure no one can see you, okay?” Your mother instructed.
You nodded your head and turned to hide inside of a bush. Though you were out of view, you could see your room’s window through the spaces of the leaves. You saw your mom approach the window, knowing exactly where you kept the necklace.
Just as she was pulling out the necklace, she whirled around in a panic. Your heart started to race in fear and at this point, you didn’t care about hiding. It seemed as if she was talking to someone, but you couldn’t see who. Her hands started to shakily raise, as if she was bringing them up to surrender.
You didn’t know what was said, you didn’t know what happened, and you weren’t sure if you ever would. One moment, everything seemed fine, but then BANG! You immediately fell to the floor as if you were hit, but not before missing the blood that splattered all over the window you had stared out of so many times before.
Almost as quickly as you went down, you scrambled back to your feet and looked at the window, as if hoping that what you saw wasn’t true. When you saw the body of your mother slumped back against the window, you let out a shriek of misery and dropped to your knees.
Everything hurt. Sure, you weren’t physically in pain, but everything else was. It was worse than what you felt when your father died. Because this time, you understood what was happening. This time, you knew you knew that she was never coming back. This time, you knew that you were truly alone.
You didn’t even notice when a group of soldiers picked you up and brought you to the transport truck. It might’ve been a couple of minutes or hours or even days until you stopped crying. The truck was still going, so you sat there in the darkness, staring off into the vast space.
When you finally arrived at the facility, you were numb. You were too tired to feel anything. They brought you into the lab and you complied with all of the tests, not exactly registering that this was reality. They then gave you your first pair of dark glasses and shoved you into a small, empty room.
From that day on, you were no longer your own person. You were an experiment. You were an object under a microscope that they poked and prodded at. You were nothing.
For half a year, you had nothing to hold onto. You had no one that could possibly fill the gaping void that your mother had left behind. You weren’t anything to anyone.
But then...
One day as you walked into your experimenting room, there were two soldiers per usual, but one of them seemed to be a lot smaller than the other. Through your dark glasses, you kept your gaze on the smaller one, wondering where they got a child or a...midget? to be one of the soldiers guarding you. You could have sworn you’ve never seen a soldier that small before.
“Head!” The scientist barked, having you snap your head forward and stay as still as you can get.
She started to go about with her experiment. A needle was poked into your arm to take blood and a knife scraped at the skin on your shoulder. You weren’t exactly sure what the scientist did with samples like these, but you weren’t dumb enough to ask.
When she was done, she nodded to the soldiers before leaving the room. As subtle as you could, you turned your head to get another glance at the strange, smaller soldier. With the helmet on, you couldn’t tell if he was looking at you back.
You saw him again for the next couple of days. Every time you looked at him, you could have sworn he was looking at you too. With any other soldier, you would have felt at least a little creeped out, but with this one...you were just curious. Who exactly was it behind that helmet?
One day, as you entered the testing room, you saw that there was a small child sitting in the chair across from yours. They couldn’t have been any older than 4 or 5. You looked to the side of the room and saw the shorter soldier standing with one of the usual ones. Tentatively, you sat in your seat.
“Hello,” You said to the small child, careful not to speak in a full sentence like the soldiers had yelled at you for doing before.
“Hi!” The small child cheered.
“Quiet!” The normal soldier barked, having you shut up and stare at your hands.
The scientist walked in, shutting the door with a loud bang that had you jumping in your chair. Your heart raced at the loud noise, but you reminded yourself that you were...not exactly safe but not in imminent danger at the moment.
“Take your glasses off,” The scientist demanded.
You immediately followed instructions, blinking a couple of times to adjust to the light. The small child gasped and stared with its mouth agape, no doubt at your eyes that had apparently turned a glowing pink when you used your compelling powers for the first time.
“Take this,” The scientist barked, shoving a lighter into the small child’s chubby hands. The scientist then turned to you and you could have sworn that you saw some sort of smile tugging at the corners of her lips.
“Now. Command the child to light the flame on his arm.”
You whipped your head to the scientist in absolute disbelief.
She couldn’t be serious.
“But-”
“Did I say talk back or did I give you a command?” The scientist sneered.
With fear of what she would do, you turned towards the small child, guilt already hovering over your body.
“B...” You said in a shaky tone, heart sinking to your stomach when you saw the child look at you with innocent doe eyes. “Burn....” Your voice cracked and you felt a lump in your throat.
“Do it now!” The scientist shrieked
“Burn your arm!” You commanded in a panic.
The child stiffened and his eyes lit an electric pink. You watched in sheer horror as he lit the match and brought the flame down to his forearm. You weren’t sure what you were expecting, but there was something about his reaction-or lack, thereof-that nearly sent you over the edge.
The child held the flame on his arm for a second longer, the smell of burning flesh spreading around the room, and wisps of smoke rising from the spot on the boy’s arm. Suddenly, as if a switch had clicked, the boys’ eyes rolled back and his body went limp, much like the preteen boy in your house.
You dug your nails into your hand, trying to focus on that pain rather than the tears that brimmed at your eyes. Who knew what she’d do if you cried.
Just as the scientist was about to speak, the door slid open.
“Hey, there’s a new cloud coming in. All hands on deck,” The soldier said.
“But ma’am, she is a moo-”
“Captain’s Orders,” The soldier demanded before leaving the entrance of the doorway.
The soldier that was just cut off glanced at the scientist as if waiting for permission to move.
The scientist glanced at the shorter soldier. “You, make sure she doesn’t move. Use any force necessary.”
You waited until both of their footsteps faded before your emotions broke through. You knew there was still the smaller soldier, but it was better than whatever the scientist would do.
You glanced at the child limp in the seat in front of you and brought your hands to your mouth to stifle your sobs. Your entire body was trembling and you couldn’t breathe. The soldier rushed to you, and you trained your eyes on your lap, knowing exactly what they were about to do. Or at least, you thought you did.
The soldier crouched down in front of you and slowly took off his helmet. He brought a hand up to yours and gently brought it down from your face.
“Hey,” He said in a comforting tone, only to have you choke out another sob.
Almost instinctively, the short soldier reached forward and wrapped his arms around you in a tight embrace. You didn’t care that he was a soldier at this moment. He was someone who’s comfort you craved for reasons you didn’t know.
When you were calmer, you let go of him and trained your eyes on your lap again.
“Th-thanks,” You stammered quietly.
“Not a problem,” He replied gently.
His gloved hand reached up to your chin and tilted you face up. Your breath caught in your throat with a trained fear. You were taught in all these months that making eye contact with any of the soldiers or scientists would result in a torturous pain. It was something you had to endure once, and never wanted to do again.
But against your better judgement, you let yourself look up.
The soldier in front of you wasn’t some midget or strangely small adult, he was a kid just like you. He looked around your age, maybe a year or two older. He had kind eyes and a small, comforting smile playing on his lips. The small part of you that wasn’t completely dehumanized by the facility almost melted at the look he gave you.
“Are you okay?” The boy asked with genuine concern in his eyes, something you haven’t seen in a long long time.
“I...” Your tone was shaky, and you averted your eyes back to your lap. “I’m fine.”
“No you’re not,” The boy sighed. “And that’s okay, this place has a tendency of doing that.” You nodded slightly, not exactly knowing what to say. After a beat of silence, he spoke up again. “I’m...” You looked up at him again but this time, his eyes were on the floor. “I’m Seungcheol.”
“Y/N,” You replied.
Seungcheol smiled. “That’s a beautiful name.”
Before you could reply, you snapped your heads towards the hallway where you heard footsteps coming closer and closer. Seungcheol stood up instantly and pulled his helmet on.
“Hang in there, Y/N.”
You didn’t see Seungcheol again for the next couple of days. Though you had only met him once, you were starting to get worried. What if something had happened to him? What if they heard you two talking? What if that was the last time you’d ever see him?
All those thoughts melted away when you caught his eye in the hallway as you walked to the testing room. This time, he didn’t have his helmet on or any of the gear that made him look like a soldier; he was in scrubs just like you, just a different color.
You both kept your gazes locked as you were led to rooms right next to each other. Right before you stepped into the room, Seungcheol offered you a small smile and a wink.
Time passed by and more often than not, you saw him. Whether it was because he was in your room as a soldier, or right next to you going to tests, or even sometimes when the scientist put you two in a room together to get tested, you got to see him.
One day, you didn’t see him at all. Sure that wasn’t too strange, but it was what happened the day after that started to worry you.
It might not have been too much of a sign, but when you saw Seungcheol out in the hallway, he didn’t look at you. His eyes were trained on the floor and he wore the most grim expression you’ve ever seen on him.
As you stepped into the testing room, his face was all you could think of. What could have possibly made him act that way?
So you, being the oh so curious one you are, you started making a plan. Sure it was incredibly risky, probably the riskiest thing you’ve ever thought of doing, but what else could they do to you?
That night was probably the first time you’ve ever used your power at the facility when you weren’t supposed to. You told yourself that it was worth it, it was for Seungcheol.
You walked up to the soldier outside your door and demanded that he took you to Seungcheol’s room. Your heart basically stopped when you saw two security guards standing outside in the hallway.
“Hey!” One of the soldiers barked, “what do you think you’re doing?”
It was over. It had to be, right? You were caught. The other soldiers would most likely catch on and you would be dead, or worse. Maybe you could request that they tell Seungcheol you lo-
“New orders from the scientist. She wants them in the same room for an experiment tonight.”
Maybe you weren’t dead after all.
The soldiers exchanged a look and then glanced back at you and the soldier under your control.
“I think we should call the scientist.”
“Yeah, just to make sure...she is a moon you know.”
“Come on, guys, you know me, there’s no way I’m the type to get mind controlled by some affected.”
The two exchanged another look.
“Then show us your eyes.”
Your heart stopped again. You turned to the man standing next to you and watched as he unlatched his helmet. He took his helmet off, your pulse rising with each inch of skin that is revealed.
“See, perfectly normal,” The soldier said once he took his helmet completely off.
You weren’t sure how, but his eyes weren’t glowing pink, yet you knew he was still under your control.
“Ah, my bad man,” The other soldiers said. “I should’ve known you would never get tricked by these monsters. I’ll get the sun to back up for you.”
The soldiers walked down the hall a couple of steps and banged on the door. As they barked an order, you turned to look at the man under your control. He was staring straight ahead, a blank look on his face, as if nothing had happened. Slowly, he started to pull his helmet back on, but just before it was latched onto his head, you saw a small pink glow.
“Alright, go ahead,” The soldiers said as they pressed the password into the keypad on the door.
You walked in with the man under your control and let the door shut behind you two. Stepping in, you saw a room that was almost identical to yours. The only difference was that he had a small window high up on the wall.
“Y/N?” Seungcheol hissed, standing up and rushing to you. He stopped about two feet away, carefully eyeing the soldier that was standing next to you.
“Don’t worry, he’ll-”
Cutting you off was the thud of the soldier’s body as he fell unconscious to the floor. You glanced at him for a moment before looking back at Seungcheol with a gentle smile.
“Hey, Cheol,” You said tenderly, stepping forward and wrapping your arms around him. Almost immediately, he wrapped his around your body and clung onto you as if you were the only thing keeping him alive.
“You’re going to get caught,” he mumbled into your shoulder.
“Don’t worry about that right now,” You said, pulling back from him and placing a hand on his cheek. “Now, what’s wrong? Are you okay?”
Seungcheol sighed, and walked to the wall. He slouched down against it and you came by to sit with him. He then told you everything. How he had been guarding for this pair of clouds for a while. How one of them got in serious trouble so he thought, if anything, he could save the other. How he gave the boy a piece of his hair to shift and escape, only for the boy to get caught...
“They burned him, Y/N/N. The cloud told them that it was his fault so they burned his hands and made me watch...” He leaned his head back on the way and looked straight ahead. “I just...I can’t get his screams out of my head. It was all my fault.”
“Cheol,” You said, placing a hand on his bicep, “you were trying to help. You had good intentions.” Your hand moved down his arm and on his hand. “This isn’t something you need to beat yourself up about.”
“But I was the one that gave him my hair. I was the one that told him to go.” His fingers laced into yours almost like it was a habit. “If I didn’t, he would probably be fine. Or at least not in as much pain.”
You brought your other hand to his cheek again and grazed your thumb along his cheekbone. His eyes fluttered shut and he let out a breath as if he had been holding it all this time. Seungcheol leaned into your touch and you gave his hand a squeeze. You leaned forward and pressed your forehead to his,
“Where is that moon?”
You aren’t exactly sure if Seungcheol heard it or not. Maybe he did and he was just ignoring it. Or, maybe he didn’t and he was just too lost in the moment.
Soldiers were outside the door. You could hear them. You knew you were going to get caught. The soldier on the floor was a dead giveaway that you had used your powers.
“Cheol,” You said urgently, taking your hand away from his and wrapping your arms around his neck. You were halfway on his lap as he snaked his arms around your waist for one last embrace. “Cheol no matter what happens, no matter how long it is until we see each other...don’t beat yourself up for what these soldiers do. Keep trying to help people, okay? You have good intentions, do something about it.”
“Y/N/N...”
You could hear the beeping from the keypad.
“You’re an amazing person, Seungcheol.” You gave him one last squeeze and pushed him down to the floor.
“What’re you-”
“Hey!” One of the soldiers barked as they stomped into the room. You stood up, putting your hands in the air to show your surrender. Hopefully this way, Cheol will be safe...
“She tricked us, ma’am! She’s a master trickster, she’s probably been planning this for years!” One of the soldiers that you interacted with rambled on.
“Quiet!” The head soldier barked. She marched up to you and grabbed a fist full of your shirt. “You’re going to regret using your powers, kid.”
You never saw Seungcheol again. At least, not for the next few years of your life. They changed your schedule so that you two were never in the same place at the same time. You half convinced yourself that he was just gone. That the sun that all the soldiers gossiped about for being “tough” and “merciless” wasn’t your sun.
That’s not my Cheol, you thought to yourself, Cheol is warm and sweet and caring...they’re talking about someone else.
At this point, you lost track of all the days. It was always the same; tests for half the day, then back to the room. You could barely even remember how old you were, all you knew was at one point you got taller, curvier, and blood started spilling out from places it should not have been spilling out.
The more time that had passed, the more you learned to listen in on soldier’s conversations. At some point, they started talking about the sun and how he had ‘escaped.’ No way he escaped. This isn’t the type of place you can escape. And even if it was, he would’ve been back for you...right?
The days went on, and the soldiers kept talking about all of the ‘escapees.’ You were eventually starting to believe them. What reason would they have to lie about the stories they told each other? So the question remained in your mind. Why didn’t Cheol come back for you? Did he forget about you?
One night, while you were in your room, you heard a loud commotion outside. At first, you thought nothing of it, but then there was a thump! against your door. On the other side, you heard the beeping of the keypad and the muttering of a mad man.
Any other person might have been scared. They might have been pressed up against the other wall, trying desperately to hide from whatever it was that was trying to barge in. And maybe a couple of years ago, you would have too. But there was nothing that anyone could do that was worse than your life at the moment.
The door opened, and in came an unfamiliar boy with a lantern in his hands, illuminating the room. Behind him was a taller boy, stretching his neck a little as if he were trying to look inside the room.
“Y/N?” The boy holding the lantern asked.
You furrowed your eyebrows together. You hadn’t heard that name in a long, long time.
“How do you know my name?” You asked the boys.
Instead of answering, both of the boys smiled and let out a soft laugh.
“Boy, Coups wasn’t kidding when he said you were gorgeous,” The boy holding the lantern smiled.
“What?”
The taller boy hit the shorter one, resulting in a loud smack! echoing through the room.
“Sorry about him. I’m Mingyu, he’s Hoshi. We’re here to help you escape.”
“Escape?” You asked in disbelief. “You mean people are actually escaping from here?”
The boys blinked at you.
“I mean, yeah,” The boy with the lantern, Hoshi, said. “Have you not heard any rumors?” As you were about to reply, Hoshi perked up as if he had just heard something that you didn’t. “Right, come on, we gotta hurry.”
Hoshi pushed past Mingyu and stepped out into the hallway. Mingyu, however, walked up to you and offered a hand with a kind smile.
“Come on, we just got to get out of here and then you’re free.”
“And how do you expect to get us out of here?” Despite your words, you grabbed his hand and let him pull you to your feet.
Instead of responding, Mingyu just winked at you. “Don’t worry, we have a team.”
Mingyu led you out of the room where Hoshi was already crouching against the wall. They motioned for you to crouch with them, and you noted how amusing it was for a giant like Mingyu to bend down so low and still stick out like a sore thumb.
“Can you see the others? Is it safe?” Mingyu asked Hoshi, making him whirl on the boy.
“For the 27th time, I can’t see through walls, Gyu!” Hoshi snapped. “But, I don’t hear any more fighting so I assume they got them all out of the way.”
“Or the soldiers got all of our guys.”
Hoshi started to laugh. “Please, these unaffected can barely hold their guns right.” He looked around once the three of you got to the end of the hallway. “Alright come on, there’s no one here.”
You ran after the boys with Mingyu dragging you by the wrist. The three of you managed to run out of the isolation building, a place that you hadn’t left since you got to that forsaken place.
“Hosh!” You heard a voice say from the side. When you turned, there was a group of about 10 boys running towards you.
“You guys took everyone out?” Mingyu asked.
“Well, yeah. Eight of us? Sixty of them? Please,” One of the boys waved off.
“Bold of you to say that, Seungkwan, you were freaking out the whole time,” Another boy scoffed.
“Shut it Dino!”
“Well,” Hoshi said over the two bickering boys, grabbing everyone’s attention. “It appears that there are soldiers coming right for us, so,” He reached forward and grabbed the wrist of one of the younger looking boys. “Y/N, this is Vernon. He’s an air elemental. He’s going to take the long way around with less soldiers while we get to the front and take them out.”
“What’s an air-”
Before you could finish your sentence, Vernon scooped you up and started to run. Your arms wrapped around his neck and curled into him tightly as you felt the wind press against your body.
“It’s okay, we’ll be there in a couple of minutes,” Vernon said. Against his shoulder, you frowned. Shouldn’t he be out of breath?
The more he ran, the more you got used to the feeling. Slowly, you lifted your head from his body and looked around. You were going faster than you could have ever imagined. Your gaze stayed on the passing trees and buildings for a while until Vernon spoke up.
“S.Coups is going to be so happy to see you. We finally managed to get him drunk enough to admit something about his past and from the way he talked about you, you were a big part of his past.”
“Who’s...who’s S.Coups?”
Vernon was about to respond, but he instead skidded to a stop. Your head whipped to what was in front of you, and you saw exactly what it was that made the boy stop.
“Go, Vernon! Go!” Hoshi screamed. “We’re not important right now, get Y/N back to camp!”
They were surrounded. All of them. There were more soldiers than you’ve ever seen before and most of them had guns pointed at the boys. Some of them had guns pointed at you and Vernon.
As you looked around at your saviors, the ones who risked everything to get you out, you felt a rage that you had never felt before. You tapped on Vernon’s arm and jumped down from his hold.
“Y/N, what’re you doing?” Vernon asked.
You barely heard him. The only thing in your mind at the moment were the soldiers. You walked forward, right for the one that was pointing his rifle at you. As you got closer, his stance faltered, curious as to what you were going to do.
Right when you were only a mere few inches away from the gun, you stopped. With a sharp gaze into the soldier’s helmet, you spoke.
“Let them go.”
Your voice was gentle, but your tone was firm. You could see the glow of pink under his helmet and watched as he turned and pointed his gun at his colleagues.
“Shoot her down!” One of the other soldiers shouted.
You glanced at the crowd of soldiers running at you and held their gazes.
“I said, let. them. go.”
The front row of soldiers stopped abruptly, having the rest of them bump into each other and some even fall over. The soldiers in the front row turned, and much like the first one, starting to point the gun at his colleagues.
The crowd turned into chaos. The soldiers weren’t sure which ones were affected by you and which weren’t. You took this to your advantage and blinked yourself out of your trance. All around you, soldiers were falling as the influenced ones tried to protect the affected boys.
“Come on!” You shouted, grabbing Vernon’s hand and shoving your way through the crowd.
As you approached the wall, Vernon scooped you up and jumped all the way over it. You buried your face back into his chest in the process, not quite used to the feeling of jumping and falling.
“Wait, what about the others?” You asked once the two of you were on the floor.
“Well, that’s Joshua,” Vernon said, pointing up at the sky as he was still running. As you looked up, you saw nothing but a bird flying past the two of you. “He’s a shifter, so he shifted into a bird.”
“Shifter...oh so a cloud?”
“Exactly.”
“But what about the others, can they fly or something?”
“Do you not know any of the other powers?”
“Uh...no? I lived in isolation most of my life.”
“Ah, well, I’ll have one of the leaders explain it to you,” He finally stopped by a tree that was out of sight from the facility walls. “Just wait for a little while, they’ll come.”
“How do you know? Can you read each other’s minds?”
Vernon chuckled. “No, I just know.”
A couple of beats of silence passed until you finally heard something.
“Right through here,” You heard Hoshi’s familiar voice.
The large group of boys all came into view with tired smiles on their faces.
“Alright, now get into the formation Woozi planned out for us and we can start walking back to the campsite,” Hoshi nodded, and the boys immediately started moving.
Vernon grabbed onto your hand and dragged you to the front of the group, leading you all through the forest.
“Okay so where exactly are we going?” You asked.
“Our campsite,” Vernon answered simply.
“Right...and who are you exactly?”
“We’re Seventeen,” Vernon shrugged.
 “Uh...”
“What he means,” Hoshi intervened, jogging up to your other side, “is that we’re a clan called Seventeen. We’ve been going around and slowly getting people out of facilities and slowly planning a revolution.”
“Okay...but who are you?”
“Right, well, you already know me and Vernon, the two behind you are Seungkwan and Dokyeom, the three behind them are Mingyu, Jun, and Wonwoo, the two behind them are The8 and Dino.”
“Yeah, I’m probably not going to remember that.”
“That’s okay, S.Coups will probably explain it to you once you get to the campsite.”
“Okay, you guys have been mentioning this ‘S.Coups’ a lot. Who is he exactly?”
Hoshi blinked at you for a moment. “You don’t...” He looked around. “Did we get the right moon? Is there another moon in that facility?”
“What? No, Coups said that he was the sun and that Y/N was the moon. He never mentioned anyone else,” One of the boys behind you, Seungkwan, said.
“Sun?” You muttered to yourself. Suddenly, it dawned on you and you gasped. “Seung-”
Hoshi’s eyes widened. “Sun! Yes, the sun, that’s exactly who you were talking about!” You looked at him weirdly, so he leaned in. “He doesn’t go by that name anymore. It’s S.Coups now.”
“So we’re going to see Seun- S.Coups? You guys are bringing me to S.Coups?” You bounced excitedly.
“Man, Coups was right, she’s so cute!” Dokyeom exclaimed from behind you.
The lot of you walked on until you reached some sort of cluster of plants. Hoshi and Vernon swept some vines to the side, which then revealed a beautiful campsite filled with tents and campfires and people walking around.
“Wow,” You said breathlessly.
“I know,” Hoshi smiled, wrapping his arm around your shoulders. “Now come on, I’ll take you to Coups.”
As the two of you approached a bigger tent, you could hear a bunch of shouting. Whether it was out of anger or just friendly banter, you weren’t sure.
“Hey, we’re back!” Hoshi called. He motioned for you to stay outside as he started to walk in.
“It’s about time! Do you know how hard it was to keep him in here for so long?” A gentle voice shouted back.
“Yah! What’re you talking about? You and Joshua basically trapped me in here!” A deep, yet familiar voice shouted back.
You could immediately tell who it was, partly through context and partly through the butterflies that started to fly around in your stomach.
The voice continued on. “Wait, where did you go anyways?”
“Well, actually...we have a surprise for you.” You saw the entrance of the tent open. “Come on in.”
You took a deep breath to get rid of your nerves, but they didn’t seem to go away. You stepped into the tent, and your heart jumped at the man standing in front of you.
Once your eyes met his, it was like nothing changed. It was like the two of you were never separated. Suddenly, you could see a past with him that you knew you didn’t have and a future that you hoped to happen. Suddenly you remembered what his smile looked like and how it sounded when he laughed. Suddenly, you could feel yourself caring again.
“Y/N...” Seungcheol said in almost a whisper.
“Hey, Cheol,” You whispered, like an old habit.
Out of nowhere, Seungcheol marched up to you and wrapped his arms around you, pulling you as close to his body as you could. You were completely engulfed by him and completely loving the feeling. All your worries, all your fears, everything just faded away. All you felt was Seungcheol’s warm body against yours.
“Y/N...I’m sorry I didn’t come back for you...please don’t leave me.”
You sniffed back your tears and pulled away from him just enough to reach up to his face.
“Why would I ever leave you, Cheol? Or do I have to call you S.Coups now?”
Seungcheol smiled and reached up to hold your hand that was against his face.
"Come on, Y/N/N. It’s you. You can call me Cheol.”

Mingyu’s Backstory
The Symbol of the Raindrop
Basic Information
A/N: Sorry for being so MIA for a long time, school has been kicking my butt. I’m getting to work on imagines/requests and stuff so I hope people will like them. Also I am so sorry Mingyu for doing all this to you.
Warnings: Depression, insecuritues, social anxiety kind of, torture, gore, that should be it
Tumblr media
(GIF not mine)
- Mingyu was born into one of the richest families in the land of the unaffected
- The Kim family were well known and well respected in their area
- So that meant they did whatever they could to keep their image
- For the first five years of his life, Mingyu was kept a secret from the world
- They wanted to make sure he wasn’t an affected before they revealed him, just in case
- So he never really had much human contact save for a few staff
- His parents wanted to make sure that there was no one that could possibly expose their secrets
- But Mingyu never complained
- He was perfectly content with the few people around him
- He was always a positive child
Even when he found out that he was exactly the type of child that his parents never wanted
- It was only a week after his parents found out did they send him away
- And still, he was optimistic
- When Mingyu first got to the facility, he chatted with the soldiers
- Most of them just rolled their eyes at him, but some found him at least slightly amusing
- “Don’t humor him,” One of the soldiers barked to the soldier that Mingyu was talking to. “This place is going to break him. You’ll see.”
- The sadistic laugh that came that soldier sent chills down Mingyu’s spine
- But that only barely effected his demeanor
- He was still slightly excited to be in a new place with a bunch of new people
- How bad could it be?
- Mingyu found out exactly how bad it could be about a month or so in
- He was still a young one, so he didn’t get to work yet
- He tried talking to the other kids his age, but they were all rude and mean and just wanted their moms
- Mingyu didn’t exactly know his mom that much so he couldn’t relate
- He then tried talking to the older kids, but none of them wanted a little brat following them around, as they expressed vigorously
- So Mingyu was alone
- He had never been alone before, he always had someone to talk to
- But now there was no one
- At such a young age, Mingyu started to develop depression
- He barely felt anymore, and when he did, it was either barely there or just pure hurt
- Mingyu wasn’t even excited when he found out that he had a new power; manipulating water
- He didn’t even flinch when the soldiers started carving a symbol into his hip
- The soldier from his first day was in the room when he got the tattoo
- “Ha! I told you didn’t I?”
- Mingyu didn’t reply
- And he didn’t like that
- But Mingyu barely registered the beating that he got
- At least it was better than feeling nothing.
- Things started to slowly change as he started working
- The first couple of months, he didn’t talk to anyone and he went on like a robot
- But after he made some sort of snide comment, making a couple of the affected chuckle, he started to feel the smallest bits of happiness again
- It wasn’t much, this happiness
- But it was enough to get through the day
- And as years went by, Mingyu started talking more and more until he had built many connections with many different people all around the facility
- The depression was definitely still there, an aching thought that badgered his mind nearly every night, but at least socializing with others could slightly fill the gaping hole in his chest
- Among the affected, Mingyu was known as many things
- ‘The clumsy one’ from all the times he tripped and dropped something
- ‘Dungeon boy’ because of how he was always sent to the floating cages in the trees as a punishment
- ‘The social one’ because he was always either talking to someone or listening while someone talked to him
- Some even called him ‘the annoying one’ because they were just jealous of his social skills
- And ‘the happy one’
- That was the one he was called the most
- That might have been a positive name, but Mingyu hated it the most
-  There were days where Mingyu was just...exhausted- both mentally and physically
- And with all the people he spoke to, it was hard and tiring to hide that from them
- But he grew up in a household where your image was everything
- So he faked it
- It was incredibly rare that Mingyu found people that he felt at ease with
- And even if he did, it didn’t last very long
- So even though Mingyu had many friends, he didn’t have any friends
- It was incredibly lonely for a while
- Until one day
- Mingyu was sent to the floating dungeons because he had tripped over his mop bucket a total of three times
- He was sitting in there like he had so many times before, lost in his thoughts
- It was peaceful and quiet and Mingyu didn’t have anyone to pretend around
- But that was exactly the problem
- Being by himself just let his mind run free
- And not in a good way
- “Hello,” A voice rang, snapping Mingyu out of his thoughts and making him jump
- When he looked up, he saw a boy crouching on top of the cage
- Mingyu let out a breath of relief and brought his hand to his chest, turning forward and closing his eyes to calm his heart rate down
- “This seems like a cruel and unusual punishment,” The boy stated
- Mingyu opened his eyes and let out a bitter chuckle
- “Tell me about it. You trip over your mop bucket three times and all of a sudden, you’re in a cage.”
- The boy frowned
- “Do you want me to get you out?”
- Mingyu shook his head and waved the boy off as he readjusted himself on the cage
-  “Nah, they’ll let me out in a day or three. If I get out any earlier, they’ll just do something worse.”
- Mingyu didn’t hear the boy say anything, so he looked up
- The boy was frowning, as if he was frustrated as to why Mingyu had to be up there
- “What exactly is this? I’ve never seen it before,” The boy settled on asking
- Mingyu let out a sigh
- “It’s a punishment  for water elementals only. They bring us up here so that we could be away from any form of water.”
- The boy cocked his head to the side, almost like a cat
- “Isn’t there water in the tree?”
- Mingyu blinked at him a couple of times
-  “Well, yeah, but like I said, if we get down or use our powers, the punishment they’d give us is even worse.”
- The boy opened his mouth to say something else, but closed it as he flinched and curled into himself
- Mingyu looked down and saw him gripping onto the strange bracelet around his wrist, face contorted in pain
-  “I should probably-ow! Get going,” The boy said as he walked back to the branch. “Good luck with all this.”
- Mingyu brought his hand up to wave at the boy and watched in amazement as he jumped all the way down to the floor and started running
- It was strange, Mingyu thought
- Usually others would expect Mingyu to speak and keep the conversation going or just got fed up with him for talking
- But with this boy, it was so natural
- He didn’t depend on Mingyu like everyone else did
- He kept the conversation going
- He didn’t seem the least bit hostile towards Mingyu
- It was honestly...refreshing
- So a couple of days later
- When Mingyu was released from the dungeons
- Mingyu walked into the dining hall and looked around for a place to sit
- He spotted a familiar face near the end of one of the tables and a smile stretched onto his lips
- He quickly made his way over to the boy and plopped down next to him
- A small sense of pride went through him when he saw the boy jump just like he had made Mingyu do at the cages
- Mingyu turned to the boy with a bright smile and offered a hand
-  “I never properly introduced myself. My name is Mingyu.”
-”Vernon,” The boy said as he shook Mingyu’s hand, only making his smile brighten
- Mingyu turned to the boy sitting across from Vernon and offered a hand
- He wavered when he saw the slight annoyance in the other boy’s face, but kept his demeanor up
- “What’s your name?”
- The boy’s eyebrow quirked up and Mingyu could see his jaw clench
- The boy weakly shook his hand
- “Dino.”
- It was Mingyu’s time to shine
- He thanked one if his maids for giving him a book on dinosaurs
-  “That’s so cool! Did you know that some dinosaur tails were over 45 feet long? That’s like at least five of me!”
- Dino forced a tight smile on his face, making Mingyu’s chest drop
- “Yes I did.”
- He almost regretted sitting there
- “So what are you guys? I’m a water elemental.”
- “I’m an air elemental. Dino’s an earth elemental,” Vernon said, making Mingyu smile again
- “Oh wow, I don’t think I’ve ever met an air elemental before,” Mingyu smiled.
- Though Vernon wasn’t exactly saying anything, there was just a comforting presence about him
- Mingyu sat with the two of them everyday after that
- It took a while, but Vernon had starting talking, making the conversation easy and natural
- Dino still had yet to warm up to him, but Mingyu didn’t mind that
- A couple of weeks passed and Mingyu cleaning the dining hall
- He was in a row with multiple kids and decided that it was too quiet
- “Hey, how’s it going over there?” Mingyu asked
- “Shut up dungeon boy! I’m not going to get in trouble because of you. This soldier hates talking,” The kid snapped, making Mingyu furrow his eyebrows together
- “Well dang, you didn’t have to be so snippy.”
- “How else will I get it through your thick skull?”
- What was his problem?
- Mingyu took a deep breath and continued manipulating the water to clean the floors
- “Well, sorry you feel that way.”
- “Yeah, sure you are buddy,” The boy scoffed a little too loudly
- “You!” A soldier’s voice boomed
- Mingyu snapped his head up only to see the soldier walking up to the boy with a furious glare
- The soldier grabbed a fistful of the boy’s hair and tilted his head up so he could make eye contact
- “What did I say about talking, boy?” The man spat
- “I-it wasn’t me! It was dungeon boy! Mingyu! He’s the one that wouldn’t leave me alone!”
- “Yeah, kid. Whatever you say,” The soldier scoffed, dragging the kid out of the room
- He only turned back to bark an order at the other soldiers
- “Make sure no one talks!” He then turned to one of the most feared affected in the facility, “You! Sun! Come with me. It’s punishing time!”
- Mingyu's mind was swimming with guilt after that
- He knew how terrifying it was for the sun to get involved
- He was so close in getting punished by the sun’s body controlling power
- So he didn’t talk to anyone for the rest of work
- Mingyu had that familiar sinking feeling in his chest and cursed at himself for it
- I was doing so well...
- When meal time came around, Mingyu’s steps were a little bit heavier and his smile was a little bit weaker than usual
- He approached the end of the table and took a seat next to Vernon like he usually did
- “Hey guys,” Mingyu said as cheerfully as he could
- And that alone drained the rest of his mental energy out of him
- Mingyu looked up from his tray of food when the two boys didn’t answer and saw them exchanging a glance
- “Are you alright?” Vernon asked timidly
- Mingyu brightened his fake smile
- “Why wouldn’t I be?”
- Vernon stared at him a moment before turning to Dino
- Mingyu dreaded what would come next
- It always happened during his off days
- He would say he’s fine, and the kids would completely believe him and try to talk to him or expect him to talk to them
- “So guys. What did you do today at work?” Mingyu asked as a weak attempt of making conversation.
- “Look, it was a long day today, so let’s just all sit in silence,” Dino said, not looking up from his tray
- Mingyu stared at him in shock
- He...didn’t expect Mingyu to talk?
- Granted, he did try and make it seem like it was something he wanted rather than the fact that he was helping Mingyu
- But Mingyu saw right through the charade
- It made Mingyu’s mood only slightly better
- Days later, Mingyu was resting in his cell when the door opened and another kid was thrown in
- It wasn’t exactly rare for kids to get thrown in every now and then, but they were usually earth elementals or fire elementals
- This time, the kid was wearing a blue uniform, so Mingyu jumped to action
- He walked up to the boy and heard him mutter something, making him cock his head to the side but approach nonetheless
- “Hey,” Mingyu called, having the boy whip his head towards him
- Though, it seemed as though Mingyu wasn’t who he was expecting from the disappointment that took over his features
- Despite that, Mingyu smiled
- “Hi, I’m Mingyu.”
- The boy’s eyes were wandering around the cell
- “Junhui.”
- Mingyu got to know Junhui-Jun-a little better
- He learned that Junhui had come from Facility C and gotten himself punished nearly every day to follow his friend
- Though some might have found that stupid as Jun mentioned, Mingyu found it noble
- To Mingyu, it was nice how there was someone out there who would risk himself for his friend
- He knew deep down that he would do it for both Vernon and Dino, but he wasn’t exactly sure they’d do the same for him
- Mingyu introduced Jun to the two and it seemed like they immediately clicked
- Jun was like a grandpa, telling old stories about him and ‘grandma’ as Mingyu called Jun’s friend inside his head
- Jun saw the way that Dino seemed to instantly like Jun and couldn’t help the small aching feeling in his chest
- But he ignored because what did he expect? He wasn’t as cool as Jun or interesting or good looking
- So Mingyu just did what he usually did and shoved his feelings down to make everyone else happy
- It didn’t matter at the time that Dino and Vernon were closer than he ever could be with them
- It didn’t matter that they didn’t think he was as important as he thought they were
- At least there were four of them, right? So he would always have Jun when Dino and Vernon were in their own world, right?
- Wrong.
- Jun had finally found his best friend and other half, The8, and brought him to the table
- Of course Mingyu was thrilled for Jun to have found the one he was looking for, but the selfish part of Mingyu wanted someone that he could be with
- Someone that would be closer to him more than anyone else in the group
- Someone he could have inside jokes with
- Someone that would think to tell him first whenever something happened
- He just wanted someone...
- Was that too selfish?
- One day while Mingyu and Jun were cleaning the latrines again, Mingyu stepped on a puddle of the waxed floor and slipped
- It wasn’t strange for him to slip around, he would usually just get a bruise or something
- But unfortunately for him, the soldiers were either too lazy or didn’t care about the broken doors
- So his leg slid right against the sharp part
- And Mingyu couldn’t help the shout of pain that escaped his lips when he felt it cut right into his calf, drawing blood
- “Gyu!” Jun exclaimed, scrambling to his side
- “What did you do?” One of the soldiers barked.
- Mingyu held onto his leg, groaning in pain
- “Please,” Jun begged, “Please heal him.”
- The soldier scoffed. “Heal? He deserves to get punished for being irresponsible.” The soldier took out a pocket knife. “Maybe I should deepen it, hm?”
- Mingyu would have felt a jolt of fear, but the pain had spread like fire all over his body
- With every small accidental movement or gust of wind, Mingyu was screaming
- “Sh, sh, Gyu,” Jun hissed. “You know what they’ll do if you make a ruckus.”
- “Th...they’ll,” Mingyu panted, “they’ll do it...any...ways.”
- A soldier came over and grabbed him under the arms, pulling Mingyu up to his feet, only to make his screams echo around the room
- “Shut up!” The soldier barked, trying to maneuver Mingyu out of the room
- It was quite the scene and in any other situation, Mingyu would have laughed
- He basically towered over this soldier, but the man was still convinced he could get Mingyu out of the latrines and into the punishment ward
- “Sir!” Another soldier spoke up, having the soldier holding Mingyu stop in his tracks
- “Let me take him, sir. I uh...” The soldier seemed to be in thought. “I haven’t gotten to punish an affected in a while!”
- The soldier holding Mingyu eyed her for a moment before letting out a boisterous cackle
- “Thirsting for blood already? Alright newbie, here you go.”
- He shoved Mingyu towards the woman and Mingyu had to bite his lip to stop from making noise
- “Have fun with that one, he is a pretty one if I do say so myself,” The soldier said suggestively with a wink that sent shivers up and down Mingyu’s spine
- “Right,” The soldier holding Mingyu said weakly before she grabbed onto his arm and dragged him towards the doors
- Once they were away from sight, the soldier looked up to Mingyu and wrapped his arm around her shoulders
- “Come on, put your weight on me,” She said in a gentle tone that Mingyu hadn’t heard in a long time
- “I...what?” Mingyu panted
- “Sh, don’t worry. I’m here to help.”
- Hesitantly, Mingyu put his weight on her shoulders and they started walking
- “Where...where are we....”
- “A friend of mine knows how to fix this, don’t worry.”
- She led him around the facility, finally slowing down when they arrived at a door that was nearly completely hidden from sight
- The soldier swung the door open and helped Mingyu walk up the small step
- “Star?” A deep voice rang
- Mingyu looked up and if he wasn’t breathless before, he definitely was now
- The boy that stood in front of them was beautiful
- For just a moment, as Mingyu stared at the boy, he had forgotten all about his pain
- “Hey Wonwoo, this is...”
- Mingyu drowned out the rest
- Wonwoo. That’s a lovely name
- Mingyu was brought back to reality as the soldier, Star, helped him to the gurney, where he climbed in and laid on his stomach
- Mingyu worked up the courage to talk to the gorgeous boy
- “Wonwoo, right?”
- Stupid of course his name’s Wonwoo. That’s what she called him!
- “That’s me.”
- Oh he actually replied
- “Thank you for taking care of me.”
- Wonwoo stared at him for a moment before walking to Mingyu’s leg
- Mingyu couldn’t see what was happening, but all of a sudden, he felt warmth
- There was a small jolt of pain from his cut, but it only lasted for a second before it was soothed
- Mingyu immediately felt energized again
- So, he tried to get to know this ‘Wonwoo’ some more
- “So Wonwoo, how long have you been here? I don’t remember seeing you at meal time.”
- “I haven’t been here long. A little less than a year.”
- Mingyu loved the way Wonwoo’s voice sounded
- he could probably listen to Wonwoo read a book about the manufaction of plastic and still be satisfied
-  “Wow, were you brought in from another facility? I have a couple of friends that were. They’re elementals like me.”
- “Something like that.”
- Mingyu could tell that Wonwoo was more shy rather than closed off
- He had been friends with Vernon long enough to know that all he had to do was just bring him out of his shell a little
-  “Well where do you eat? I can try to sneak you in some extra bread as a thank you. One of my fire elemental friends sneaks us extra all the time.”
- Wonwoo didn’t answer, so Mingyu just assumed that he was too focused on whatever it was he was doing
- So he just decided to talk, making sure not to ask any questions that required a response
- But then Wonwoo started interjecting at some points and eventually, they were having a full conversation
- Mingyu barely even remembered his cut until Wonwoo walked to his leg and spread something on it, bringing back that warm and soothing feeling
- “Okay lay there for ten mintues and you should be good to go. You can just brush the paste off.”
- “Alright.”
- A beat of silence passed
- “So which facility did you come from?”
- Wonwoo opened his mouth to respond, but before any sound came out, the door swung open
- In a quick moment, Wonwoo shut the curtains to Mingyu’s gurney and through the shadows, he could see a shorter, more plump man walk in
-  “Uh, it’s just a soldier who…got burned on his butt from a f-fire elemental.”
- Mingyu nearly snorted, so he covered his mouth to keep from getting the both of them in trouble
- Mingyu listened to the conversation that Wonwoo had with the soldier, and he couldn’t help but notice the less...hateful tone the soldier used with him
- so maybe these soldiers were capable of kindness after all
- Once Mingyu heard the soldier leave, he grabbed the curtains and yanked it open
- “I didn’t know they could be so nice!”
- Wonwoo looked bewildered
- “That’s nice?”
- “Well, yeah. He didn’t hit you, or threaten you, or look at you like you’re something on the bottom of his shoe.”
- Mingyu propped his body up with his elbows as Wonwoo walked closer to him
- “Is that what happens to you?”
- “I...”
- Mingyu might have made the mistake of looking into Wonwoo’s eyes
- He lost all train of thought
- “I sh-should probably get going now,” Mingyu said, climbing off of the gurney
- He brushed the-now hardened-paste off of his leg and stared at it in amazement
- “Woah! It’s like nothing was even there!”
- Wonwoo chuckled, “Yeah, it’s what I do.”
- “Well, I’ll see you, Wonwoo,” Mingyu said.
- “Bye, Mingyu.”
- Mingyu waited until he was outside of the building to let his heart beat faster at the sound of his name from Wonwoo’s lips
- The next day at meal time, Mingyu scoured the lightning elementals table for a certain healer
- When he finally saw him with his head down, Mingyu excitedly ran over and dropped a piece of bread on his tray
- “I found you!” Mingyu cheered as he settled into the seat across from Wonwoo
- Wonwoo gently smiled, “Yes you did.”
- Mingyu sent a glance at his little group at the end of the other table
- They’d be fine without him. Maybe they wouldn’t even notice he was gone.
- For the next couple of months, Mingyu switched between sitting with Wonwoo and his group
- whenever he wasn’t getting punished, that is.
- His group of elementals started to note how much happier he seemed all of a sudden, but Mingyu would always brush it off
- Mingyu even started to go to Wonwoo whenever he had the slightest injury
- “With the amount of times you end up in here, I’m starting to think you’re doing it to see a certain someone,” Wonwoo said at one point
- Mingyu beamed up at him, “Yeah, Star definitely. I can’t get enough of her”
- Wonwoo snickered as he healed one of the bruises on Mingyu’s side
- “Hey, why don’t I introduce you to my friends? They’re starting to wonder who the infamous Wonwoo is,” Mingyu said
- Wonwoo paused for a moment
- “Wow, meeting the friends. Big step.”
- Mingyu chuckled and pulled his shirt down once Wonwoo was done
- “They’ll love you.”
- When meal time came around, Mingyu dragged Wonwoo to his friends with a bright smile
- “Guys! Guys! This is Wonwoo, he’s the one I’ve been talking about this whole time!”
- “Yeah, we got that, Gyu,” The8 retorted
- “Don’t mind him, he has a stick up his a-”
- “Anyways,” Mingyu interrupted Jun. “That’s The8, Jun, Vernon, and Dino.”
- “It’s nice to meet you guys,” Wonwoo smiled politely
- It was awkward at first, but once everyone started to warm up to each other, it was like one big happy family
- And Mingyu finally had someone that was closer to him than anyone else
- Everything was perfect for a long time
- Even when Mingyu and The8 would bicker about the randomest things
- Even when Dino expressed his distaste for Mingyu, despite them being friends for years already
- Even when he got himself and Jun in trouble for his clumsiness
- At least he had Wonwoo
- Until lock down happened
- Mingyu wasn’t sure why they were on lock down, all he knew was that it happened immediately after he had gotten Jun and himself sent to the floating dungeons, only for it to catch on fire
- Luckily though, Vernon was there to save them
- Lockdown only lasted a couple of months
- Mingyu was worried about his friends, but he knew it would do him no good
- He was glad that he had Jun with him
- When lockdown was over, they were back to their usual schedules
- Except with more restrictions
- They were constantly and closely monitored no matter what
- bathroom breaks were uncomfortable to say the least
- They weren’t allowed to walk around the dining hall anymore, they could only walk to their seat and to the garbage
- But worst of all, Wonwoo wasn’t’ allowed to sit with them anymore
- All affected had to stay with their group
- The only good thing was that he was able to listen to Dino rant about the rumors of people escaping
- Mingyu didn’t exactly believe the rumors like he told Dino
- he just wanted to get Dino to like him so he said he believed him
- But Mingyu hoped that the rumors were true
- One day, while Mingyu was cleaning the courtyard with a large group of different elementals
- It was one of the rare days where Mingyu got separated from Jun
- He was just raking the leaves when he saw someone scurry past him
- When Mingyu looked up, he saw a familiar mop of black hair and round glasses
- “Wonwoo!” He called excitedly, running towards the boy he hadn’t seen in weeks. “What’re you doing here?”
- Mingyu took notice of the boy that he had never seen before standing next to him, looking around
- Just as Wonwoo opened his mouth to reply, the boy next to him widened his eyes and grabbed Wonwoo’s wrist
- “We gotta go!” Mingyu heard as the boy ran off with Wonwoo, who only sent one last glance back
- It was then that he realized what exactly was happening
- Wonwoo was...escaping
- Like all of Dino’s stories, he was actually escaping
- Nearly a minute later, someone brushed past Mingyu and he could have sworn it was the sun
- Was he helping them escape? Were Dino’s stories true? Was he the one that actually escaped??
- Mingyu looked to the soldiers and watched as they talked to each other in a panic
- “You all! Dismissed!” One of the soldiers screamed at the affected before running towards the entrance of the facility
- Mingyu dropped his broom and started sprinting towards the dining hall
- It was nearly across the facility, but Mingyu needed to tell them
- Once he got to the table, he skidded to a stop and leaned on Vernon and the table for support
- “Guys!” He panted, “Wonwoo was...I just...I saw...”
- “Words, Gyu. Words!” Mingyu heard as he tried to catch his breath
- “Wonwoo escaped,” He managed to rasp out
- “What do you mean gone?” Vernon asked as Mingyu sat next to him an took a sip from his cup
- Mingyu cleared his throat
- “As in he ran off with these…these bandits or something! And I could have sworn I saw the sun. You know, the one that watched over us every now and then? The scary one?”
- “So its true then,” The8 stated
- “I told you!” Dino cheered, and Mingyu was glad that he was indirectly the cause of his smile
- A week later, everything was back to normal
- Mingyu had adjusted to the fact that Wonwoo was finally free
- He was happy for Wonwoo for getting out, but part of him was sad that he’d never get to see him again
- Just as Mingyu was lost in his thoughts, a loud bang echoed around the room, having him jump in his seat
- “Everyone get down! Get down!” A voice boomed
- Mingyu turned to see two familiar soldiers pointing rifles at their colleagues
- so they finally went rogue then
- Mingyu went under the table and saw Dino with a worried expression on his face
- In an attempt to soothe him, Mingyu placed a hand on his back
- A high, painful screech sounded, having Dino flinch under Mingyu’s hand, so he moved closer to the boy and held him close
- Mingyu knew that Dino didn’t like him
- Or maybe he even hated him
- Mingyu didn’t know why
- But ever since he came to their group, Dino just didn’t seem to like him
- At first Mingyu thought Dino was just like that
- But when he warmed up to Jun then The8 then Wonwoo so quickly, he realized it was probably just him
- He had expressed it to Wonwoo and Jun on multiple accounts
- But the both of them just brushed it off
- It did throw him into spouts of insecurity and anxiety and such, but he just faked a smile and treated Dino like he would treat anyone else
- “Vernon,” A voice whispered.
- Mingyu looked up to see a boy who looked around their age standing on the bench that The8 and Jun were under
- “Vernon its me!”
- Mingyu watched as Vernon’s head lifted from the floor
- “Seungkwan?”
- this must have been his friend
-  “Get up, we’re busting you and your friends out of here.”
- Dino nearly shoved Mingyu’s hand away and scramble out from under the table, onto his feet
- Mingyu sighed and climbed out, crouching down to help the rest of his friends get out
- “They’re coming!” One of the rogue soldiers shouted from the doors
- Mingyu turned to see the boy, Seungkwan, running down the bench with Vernon following behind
- He helped Dino onto the bench first, then Jun, then The8 before climbing on and following
- With the help of The8′s fire, Dino’s earth manipulation, and Vernon’s air manipulation, the group made it past a large crowd of soldiers and started running towards the exit of the facility
- Mingyu stayed in the back of the group, making sure that everyone would get out okay
- He kept pace with Dino, who looked to be running as fast as he could
- There was a large gap between the two of them and the rest of the group
- “I’m not going to make it…I’m not going to make it,” Mingyu heard Dino muttering to himself
- Mingyu sent a glance behind him and saw the soldiers gaining on them
- He then looked at Dino, who was looking back in fear
- Everything moved in slow motion
- Mingyu grabbed Dino’s wrist and pulled him closer before placing two hands on his back and pushing him forward
- As Dino fell in step with The8 and Jun, Mingyu felt hands all over his body, pulling him to the floor
- They threw him down and Mingyu immediately felt pain
- He wasn’t sure what was a hand or a foot or a baton
- And then, Mingyu saw nothing.
- When Mingyu woke up
- He was in a dark room, lit by a small window on the wall
- Every inch of his body either ached or stung and the heat of the room unsettled his water elemental side
- His mouth and throat were dry
- That had never happened before
- But Mingyu loathed it
- “So,” A voice in the darkness called. “You’re finally awake.”
- “Water,” He rasped desperately
- The voice laughed bitterly
- “Did you really think we’d get you water, you filthy little affected?”
- The soldier came into view
- She wasn’t one that Mingyu came across too often, but she was known to be cruel and sadistic
- So Mingyu hung his head and looked to the floor, his breaths rough in his ear
- “You know,” She stepped forward, “a human can survive without water for three days.” She took another step forward. “But you filthy W Raindrops can survive-I don’t know-about two months.”
- She took another step forward and grabbed a fistful of his hair, tilting it up so he could look her in the eyes
- “Its not nearly enough time for us to have our fun now, is it?”
- She roughly threw his head down and walked away
- He watched as she got to the corner of the room and turned on a desk lamp
- She held up different things and waved them around, as if she were excitedly showing off her new toys
- Mingyu blinked a couple of times and squinted his eyes
- When he saw what it was she was holding, his blood ran cold
- “Now don’t worry, we won’t use them all at once,” The soldier smirked. “It’ll be different everyday.”
- The soldier set down one of the tools and walked towards Mingyu with the knife
- Mingyu started using all of his strength to scramble away, but was restricted by the chains attached to his wrists
- She got closer and closer and then
- The room was filled with Mingyu’s screams.
***
- Mingyu had lost count of the days
- At first he counted, watching the one beam of light turn from the warm sun to the cold night
- But then he passed out a couple of times from the pain
- So he had just given up
- The door opened again, and Mingyu didn’t even flinch this time
- He waited as still as he could for the woman to walk in
- He was still barely recovering from the last session where she took a hammer and slammed it down on each of his fingers-multiple times
- He could still hear the laughter that came from her
- “Mingyu”
- If he had the energy to, Mingyu would have furrowed his eyebrows
- He heard voices every now and then, but this was much clearer than the other times
- “Mingyu”
- Maybe he was dead finally
- The voice did sound like an angel’s
- “Mingyu!”
- Mingyu tried to crack his eyes open as he heard footsteps scrambling towards him
- Someone slid into view, but Mingyu’s eyes were barely open enough to register who it was
- “Coups what did they do to you?” A honey like voice breathed
- “How many times do I have to tell you to stop using my name as a curse,” Another voice snapped
- “Mingyu.”
- Mingyu felt something soft on the side of his face and leaned into it
- He was definitely dead now
- “Come on, open your eyes for me”
- Breaking Mingyu out of his fuzzy state, something nudged his hand, making him howl in pain
- A hand clamped over his mouth, only bringing a small stinging sensation from the cuts around his lip
- “His fingers are broken!” The angelic voice exclaimed
- “Then fix them!”
- “I’m trying!”
- Through his slitted eyes, Mingyu saw a familiar green glow
- He felt a jolt of pain for a split second before he felt the familiar warmness and the familiar soothing sensation
- “W...Wonwoo,” He breathed, trying to open his eyes wider
- “Hey, Gyu,” Wonwoo smiled, bringing one hand to his cheek while the other worked to reallign his bones
- “I’m dead,” Mingyu smiled, leaning into Wonwoo’s touch. “My angel’s here.”
- “Come on, Gyu,” Wonwoo called, helping Mingyu to his feet
- Mingyu didn’t even register that the chains were off
- He let Wonwoo and the other guy bring his arms around their shoulders and let them drag him out of the room
- His eyes were shut again, but he knew he was out right when he felt the nice, cool air
- “So, this is what the afterlife is like,” Mingyu muttered
- “Hate to break it to you kid, but you’re not dead,” The unfamiliar voice said, making Mingyu frown
- “Who’s in denial in death?” He slurred before everything went black again
***
- Mingyu woke up
- But this time it was different
- His body ached, but not as much as every other day
- It wasn’t hot or dry anymore, it was cold and moist
- And when he opened his eyes
- He saw light
- As he adjusted to it all, he saw that he was in some sort of tent
- At one side of it, he saw a familiar face, head resting on his knees
- “Dino?” He croaked, having the boy’s head snap up
- “Mingyu!” Dino cried, springing forward and nearly knocking Mingyu back down as he wrapped his arms around him
- “Mingyu I’m so sorry,” Dino sobbed into Mingyu’s shoulder. “I’m so so sorry.”
- Mingyu wasn’t exactly sure what was happening, but he put a comforting hand on Dino’s back.
- “It’s okay Dino, it’s okay,” He said gently, rubbing his back up and down
- It was then that he realized his hands didn’t hurt anymore
- The fabric entrance of the tent draped to the side, and two boys walked in
- “Wonwoo,” Mingyu breathed, as if he had just seen him for the first time
- “Dino, be careful, he’s still healing,” Wonwoo called, having the younger boy release Mingyu and sit by his legs
- “What’s going on?” Mingyu asked, voice nearly cracking
- I thought I was dead
- “Mingyu,” Said the boy next to Wonwoo, who he didn’t recognize at that moment. “I’m S.Coups. Welcome to Seventeen.”

Tumblr media
(GIF not mine)
- Minghao grew up under the impression that being an affected was disgraceful
- His family were masters of martial arts and loathed the idea that there were beings that could get the best of them even if they had no training
- They owned a dojo and Minghao’s father made sure to teach his son the moment he could walk
- From a young age, Minghao was taught restraint and discipline
- So he never acted out
- Not even when he realized he could hear what people were talking about even if they were miles away
- Or even when he could see every bump and scratch on the paper when he practiced his calligraphy
- He didn’t even act out when he turned five and found out that he could breathe fire
- Minghao knew exactly what he was
- He knew that it was wrong for him to be able to do all these things, so he kept it from his parents
- Though, he did practice it when he was alone in his room
- For the next three years, Minghao was the model child
- His parents boasted about him at every brunch, every martial arts competition, every time there was a gathering with people outside of his family
- They loved the idea that Minghao was perfect, and especially loved rubbing other people’s noses in it
- But Minghao himself didn’t exactly appreciate it
- Like many ‘picture perfect’ families, the Xu family didn’t exactly get along
- It was more often than not that Minghao’s parents were ignoring him or his grandfather was scolding him for getting something wrong in his martial arts training
- Minghao slowly started to hate it
- He hated the way he saw other families and how they all genuinely loved each other whether people were watching or not
- He hated the way there were certain things he could and couldn’t do
- Minghao felt trapped, but he could never admit it
- So he bottled it inside
- y’all know how that goes...
- But on one particularly bad day...
- Minghao couldn’t get the move that his grandfather taught him
- After receiving a brutal and threatening lecture from his grandfather about how useless he was, Minghao was sent out into the pouring rain to practice the move over and over again until his grandfather was satisfied
- Ever since Minghao turned five, he hated the rain and the cold almost as much as he hated his family
- And his grandfather knew that
- So of course his grandfather just had  to ‘forget’ about his grandson
- ‘i’m sorry kid, i’m not as young as i claim to be’
- Minghao only went in when it was pitch black outside
- He stepped into the dojo, fully ready to confront his grandfather
- But when he saw that the dojo was empty...
- His blood started boiling
- So against his better judgment, he sprinted to the house
- Usually, he was so refined, but he had enough of all the abuse and neglect
- Minghao barged into the study and saw his grandfather sitting behind the desk without a single worry for his grandson
- And his parents sitting near the bookshelves with some sort of ‘sophisticated old people’ books
- “Minghao!” His mother shouted
- “How dare you barge in like this! Have you no manners?” His grandfather scoffed
- Everything happened so fast
- One moment, Minghao was screaming about how he was out in the rain for hours
- And the next, the floor caught on fire in front of him
- And then the fire started to surround his family
- They started to scream at Minghao, shouting about how he was a monster and how he had to get them out
- But in the heat of the moment
- get it? heat?
- In the heat of the moment, Minghao’s priority was to save himself
- So as the fire grew, he ran out of the house as quick as he could, not sparing a look back at his family
- The fire crackled and the ceiling started to fall
- As he ran, the flames that surrounded the hallways seemed to make a tunnel for him all the way until he got outside
- He stepped back and took in the view of his house caught up in flames
- “I knew it! He’s a monster!”
- Minghao whipped his head around and saw a crowd of neighbors staring at him with horror
- When he looked down at himself, his blood went cold when he saw his chest glowing a bright orange color that spread to his arms
- He had practiced his powers before,  so he knew how to control it, so he took a breath and stopped his powers
- Unfortunately, he was unconsciously keeping the flames from spreading, so the second he stopped, they roared and clung onto the trees all around it
- In a panic, Minghao looked between the crowd of neighbors and the house before  bringing his hands up to take control of the flames again
- “He’s burning the house down!” One of the neighbors screamed.
- “Where are the parents and the old man?” Another shouted
- “Someone take the kid down!”
- And next thing he knew, Minghao was tackled to the floor
- The person the was on top of him let out a screech and jumped off of him almost immediately
- “He burned me! he burned me! He’s a monster!”
- Minghao looked around the crowd helplessly, trying to search for some way out
- One part of the crowd split and in came firefighters sprinting towards the fire
- Right behind them, a group of soldiers came running in and in the blink of an eye, Minghao was tossed into the back of a truck
- Minghao was terrified at first, but like many children his age, he wasn’t able to differentiate fear from anger
- His heart was pounding in his chest and he felt a lump in his throat start to form
- Frustrated, Minghao started to thrash around in the back of the truck and make a ruckus
- Eventually, the back of the dark truck lit up and he saw that he was glowing
- He started to throw fireballs all around the truck, only to have them hit the sides and disappear
- it was oddly therapeutic
- “Hey!” The soldiers banged on the wall separating them from Minghao. “Keep it down in there or we’ll shoot!”
- When they arrived at the facility, the soldiers brought Minghao into a room where he got forced to show off his skills
- They then pushed his face into the floor and carved a symbol into his lower back.
- The soldiers didn’t pay him a second glance after that
- Not even when it was obvious that his tattoo was infected
- It was his roommate who pointed it out
- Probably the only words that the boy said to Minghao
- So for the first few days, he tried to talk to the soldiers, ask them for help
- But they just quite literally pushed him away
- So then he turned to some older affected kids, asking for any type of way to heal it
- But they all scoffed at him and basically told him to ‘deal with it himself’
- Even his roommate, a water elemental who seemed to know what he was doing told him to just let it kill him
- It was only the first week and Minghao was already filled with so much hatred towards these people
- He realized that he was on his own and decided to take matters into his own hands
- Minghao waited until the soldiers were out for lunch before sneaking into their office and searching for anything that could possibly help him
- He eventually did find something and his tattoo was healed in less than a month
- From then on, he snuck around the soldiers’ offices and searched for anything else that could help him
- At first it was the bare necessities like soap, water bottles, and even food when he didn’t get to the dining hall in time
- But the more he was able to sneak past the soldiers, the more he took
- It went from bare necessities to anything he wanted
- He did feel guilty for stealing things that weren’t his, he was human after all, but after a day where he got ‘punished’ just for accidentally brushing past a soldier, his guilt was long gone
- He didn’t get caught for the next couple of times
- Until the eighth time, Minghao was walking into his room, not knowing that his roommate was back from dining hall
- “You’re...you’re stealing!” There was something about the older elemental’s face that just seemed...sadistic. “Oh, the soldiers are gonna love this! When they find out, you’re dead!”
- Deep down, Minghao panicked. But there was something about his roommate’s tone and smile that made his stomach churn
- So he morphed his face as threatening and scary as he could and snarled at the kid
- “Don’t you dare.”
- And with that, he walked away, the blood draining from his face as he ran back to their room
- That night, he was too relieved about the fact that the roommate didn’t come in before he fell asleep to think of the consequences
- He was woken up the next morning with the slamming of his door
- The soldiers raided his room and found all of the things that he stole
- Minghao didn’t show it, but he was terrified
- But then he saw his roommate with a smug smile standing in the doorway and the fear morphed to anger
- He glared and snarled at the water elemental as the soldiers took him away
- It was the first time that he was punished so bad but he knew for a fact that it wouldn’t be the last
- The beating he had made it hard to walk back to his room afterwards
- But he didn’t show it
- He knew that showing weakness would probably get him killed
- So it was only when he came back to his room when he let his tears slip from his eyes
- He knew his roommate wouldn’t be back for a while, so he didn’t have to worry about getting caught
- His chest was still heavy, as if he could still feel that one soldier standing on it
- It was hard to breathe and his whole body was abnormally hot
- Minghao’s heart was pounding and his entire body was trembling
- There was this impending feeling that he was going to die, even if he knew he was safer in his room
- That was his first panic attack
- He didn’t stop stealing after that
- There was just something about taking the luxuries away from the soldiers that brought some twisted form of joy to him
- The next couple of times he got punished, he went back into his room and cried
- But then it just stopped one day
- He didn’t care anymore
- Minghao’s facade eventually became his general attitude
- Of course he was still emotional and such, he wasn’t a robot, but it was rare that he ever showed it in public
- Especially when the kids started making fun of him
- Minghao was completely aware of the rumors that sparked about him
- Some of them did hurt, but he still never showed it
- Though, there were times that it was so frustrating how obvious they were being
- So one day in the dining hall
- A group of kids were basically following him, talking about how he ‘probably killed someone before he got to the facility’
- Though, the main one talking was his roommate, who tried using the fact that they lived together to spread some lies
- Annoyed, Minghao whirled on him, waving his arm and swiping a flame at the boy
- Minghao originally intended for the flame to wave inches in front of the boy’s face, but it hit him instead
- Minghao wasn’t sure if it was because he miscalculated or if he was just that angry
- But the boy let out a screech and held onto his face as he fell to the floor
- Minghao felt bad, he really did, but he was frozen in his spot, not knowing exactly what to do
- Though to the rest of the kids, he just looked like he was watching the boy writhing in pain
- It didn’t really help that his resting face looked like he was glaring at the kid
- Minghao was punished worse than ever before that day
- After that, every day was different
- Minghao would find something new to steal and sometimes got caught
- There were some days that he was just bored and decided to mess with the soldiers
- He knew that he was going to get punished anyways, so why not do something fun out of it?
- Rumors still spread and Minghao decided to just embrace it
- He discovered that he got a new nickname; ‘The8′
- It was made by the gossips, wanting to make fun of Minghao for getting caught ‘The 8th’ time of stealing
- But Minghao honestly thought it had a nice ring to it
- So eventually the nickname lost meaning and just became a regular nickname
- No one talked to Minghao for a while, and he was honestly fine with that
- Until he got a new roommate
- It was near twilight when a boy around Minghao’s age, maybe a year or two older, was shoved into his room
- Minghao was sitting on his bed with a book in hand, only looking up slightly at the new boy
- Minghao took one glance at the boy’s blue uniform and his heart raced
- With his experience with water elementals, he wasn’t so sure if he should trust them
- He was about to snarl something when he heard the boy his and grab onto his leg
- Just on his ankle, Minghao saw the tattoo for a water elemental
- Remembering what happened to him with his tattoo, he spoke up despite his need to keep up his ice cold appearance
- “You’re gonna want to wrap that up or it’ll get infected.”
- When the boy glanced at Minghao, he quickly looked back to his book, an indifferent expression on his face
- Though, Minghao felt the boy’s heavy gaze on him, making him look back up
- There was something about the boy’s innocent and scared look that tugged on Minghao’s heartstrings, but he didn’t want to show vulnerability
- So instead he scoffed and reached into his drawer, rummaging through the different medical supplies he stole just in case
- He tossed a piece of cloth towards the boy, feeling slightly bad that he didn’t have anything else to give
- But the boy gratefully took it and sat on the empty bed on the other side of the small room
- As the boy wrapped his ankle, Minghao returned his gaze to his book, but none of the words on the page seemed to stay in his mind
- Instead Minghao was fighting the urge to take another look at the boy
- The boy just had this energy around him that was drawing Minghao to him...
- “I’m Junhui. But you can call me Jun,” The boy said, snapping Minghao out of his thoughts
- He still fought the urge to look up, trying to seem like he didn’t care
- “That’s good for you,” Minghao brushed off
- “Well, what’s your name?”
- He turned to look at the boy, Jun, and glared at him
- He didn’t know why it felt so strange to act so cold and rude to this boy, it wasn’t any different than anyone else
- Maybe part of Minghao thought that with a new boy, he’d be able to have a fresh start
- But the other part of Minghao told him that once the boy met the gossips, he would think of him just as everyone else did
- So he couldn’t get attached
-  “Look, I don’t know how long you’re going to be in here and I don’t really care. Just because we’re roommates right now does not mean we’re friends. Just stay out of my way.”
- Minghao stood up and left the room
- Partially because he was hungry, partially because it would have been awkward
- and partially for dramatic effect
- But when he came back, his new roommate was laying on his bed, under the covers that Minghao can’t quite recall was ever washed
- Minghao didn’t say anything to the boy
- He just watched him from afar, understanding the transitioning phase that the boy was going through since he was probably just caught
- Minghao, feeling slightly concerned, stole extra bread and fruit to give to Jun since he didn’t seem to be getting up
- it would be bad for his track record if a roommate of his died
- Eventually, one day when Minghao made his way back to his room from a day of stealing, he saw that Jun was gone
- A small smile tugged at his lips as he sat back down on his bed, doing a crossword from the puzzle book he found
- But when Jun came back in, his eyes widened when he saw Minghao
- Then immediately, his gaze fell to the floor, making Minghao’s heart sink
- Of course Jun would hear the rumors after going out...it was inevitable.
- Jun didn’t try to talk to Minghao again and so Minghao went on with his normal life
- After a week and a half passed, Minghao made his way to the kitchens to try and steal some extra bread
- But, when he made his way towards the entrance, he was immediately met with a group of elementals led by his old roommate, who’s face was a little more charred than Minghao remembered
- “Where do you think you’re going?”
- Minghao looked at the boy and let out a scoff despite the feeling of guilt that was shooting through his chest
- “Get out of my way,” Minghao snarled, walking through the group
- “Oooh,” The boys all chorused
- “Tough guy, aren’t you?” One of them heckled
- “Well of course he is, you have to be tough to burn your family down!” Minghao’s ex roommate called after him, making Minghao stop in his steps
- “Hit a weak spot did I?”
- “It takes a real psycho to kill their own family, right? What a disgrace.”
- Minghao’s chest was heavy
- His mouth was open, he was breathing, but it felt like no oxygen was getting to his lungs
- “Aw is he crying?”
- Minghao’s pride got over the drowning feeling he was feeling and he turned to glare at the group
- “I suggest you leave before you get more than just that scar.”
- The roommate turned pale white and the group immediately turned and ran
- Right when they were out of sight, Minghao sprinted toward his room, heart pounding
- Once he shut himself in his room, Minghao climbed into the corner of his bed like he had so many times
- He dug his hands into his hair, tugging at the strands to try and hold onto something to keep himself from completely breaking
- “Make it stop,” Minghao muttered to himself between choked sobs
- It was too loud
- Minghao moved his hands over his ears to block out all the little noises that sounded
- The walls were closing in from around him and his eyes darted all over the place
- And of course, that just had to be the moment that his roommate walked in
- “What’s wro-”
- “Go away!” Minghao snapped in a strained voice, trying to cover his crying face
- Just as Minghao expected Jun to laugh at him and run out to tell everyone, he slowly walked towards him and sat next to him on the bed
- Minghao didn’t do anything when Jun wrapped his arms around his body, holding him tightly
- The pressure from Jun’s arms and the warmth of his body started to ground Minghao
- His breathing slowly started to even out and that impending feeling of danger was slowly going away
- Minghao started to feel...safe and comforted in a way
- After a while, Minghao was almost completely calmed down, but Jun’s arms didn’t move
- So Minghao pushed them away, immediately regretting it when he missed the feeling of being so close to someone
- “Th-thanks,” Minghao said, filling the awkward air
- “Are you okay now?” Jun asked, having Minghao nod and avert his gaze to his hands
- Minghao heard Jun shift on the bed so that he was sitting in front of him
- Peeking up at the boy, Minghao swallowed back his nerves and looking back down
- “I’m Minghao.”
- Minghao looked up through his eyelashes, ready for any form of mockery or laughter in which he would state ‘no, you’re name’s The8′
- But instead, Jun smiled
- Someone actually smiled at Minghao
- And not because he fell or something like that
- “It’s nice to meet you, Minghao.”
- Despite being so drained and tired, Minghao felt his heart speed up
- He hadn’t heard someone else call his name in such a long time
- And with such a nice voice too...
- “Everyone calls me The8, though,” Minghao added, just in case
- “So I’ve heard.”
- After that day, Minghao considered Jun a friend
- For a while, they would never be seen together outside of their room
- minghao didn’t want people to start making fun of Jun too
- But eventually Jun started tagging along whenever Minghao went to steal something or to just mess with the soldiers
- And before he knew it, Minghao had a new partner in crime
- Being with Jun made everything 10 times more fun
- Minghao would find himself giggling and giving away their location because of something Jun did or said
- But then Minghao would take the blame, knowing full well that Jun probably couldn’t handle so many beatings
- Though there were times where Jun took the blame, and Minghao felt so bad about it that he went out to find anything that Jun liked
- The more Minghao got to know Jun, the more he felt a sense of responsiblity
- Jun was older than him by a year, but he still acted like a little kid
- So Minghao found himself acting like a responsible adult taking care of a toddler most of the time
- The two of them learned to understand each other and over time, rubbed off on each other
- Jun started to get just a bit more responsible and Minghao got a little more careless
- One example of that was on one of their heists together
- They had ate lunch together in their room, but both agreed that it was a little bland and missing something
- So Minghao revealed that he knew of a room only accessible to soldiers, deep in the kitchen, with a big bottle of hot sauce and spices and more condiments
- So of course, the two of them just had to go looking for it
- The room was generally unguarded once they got into the kitchen, so the two waited until the soldiers were switching shifts to run in
- They easily got into the room, looking around with starry eyes
- Jun immediately ran to one of the shelves, searching through the different snacks that were neatly piled
- Minghao was still looking around in awe
- “Hao Hao!” Jun called, making Minghao snap his head towards the boy
- minghao never wanted to admit how his heart leapt every time Jun used his nickname for him
- “We hit the motherload!”
- Minghao walked up to where Jun was standing and awed about all of the different snacks and fruits and candies that they found
- The two of them started branching out, searching for any small things they could fit in their pockets or even hold without drawing attention
- Minghao decided it would cover more ground if they each searched a separate side, so they stood across the room from each other with their backs turned
- It was silent for the most part as they searched
- Until Minghao found something he hadn’t seen in a long time
- A bottle of water
- Minghao turned around to tell Jun, but immediately closed his mouth when he saw how unsuspecting the boy looked
- With a mischievous grin, Minghao opened the bottle and started tiptoeing closer
- “Jun!” He shouted when he was right behind the boy
- The moment Jun turned around to face Minghao, he threw the water forward, smiling as it splashed all over his face
- With the ‘done’ look Jun had, Minghao couldn’t help but giggle
- Jun wiped the water with the collar of his shirt and gave Minghao an eye roll despite having a smile on his face
- “Be quiet will you? We don’t wanna get caught.”
- Minghao pouted a little turning to head back to his side of the room, only to feel some sort of liquid squirting on his back
- When he turned on instinct, he saw Jun holding a bottle of mustard, a bright smile on his face
- “Oh, you’re on”
- The next couple of event went by in a flash
- Minghao managed to grab a bottle of ketchup and mayonnaise and squirted it all over Jun
- And Jun wielded his mustard and grabbed for a hot sauce bottle
- But as Minghao sprayed him, Jun realized he couldn’t open his hot sauce bottle
- “Time out!” He exclaimed, setting his mustard down and trying to open the bottle
- But Minghao, so caught up in the moment, ran forward and squirted a glob of ketchup into Jun’s hair
- “Hao Hao!” Jun giggled, wriggling at the cold sensation and accidentally dumping the hot sauce all over his hands
- The two of them started laughing as Minghao backed away to find something else to throw or spray
- But just as he started to look, the door opened
- Minghao’s face fell when he saw a soldier standing in the doorway, a furious look on his face
- When he glanced at Jun, he saw his friend fighting back a snicker as he stood with his hands out, covered in hot sauce
- The soldier grabbed both Minghao and Jun by the collar of their shirt and threw them inside the transport car that drove around the grounds and got soldiers from place to place
- This time, they were on the way to the punishment rooms
- The ride was quiet at first
- A little too quiet for Minghao’s liking
- So he looked at Jun, searching for something to say
- Minghao cleared his throat.
- “Did you know your phalanges are covered in hot sauce?”
- Jun let out a snort and started laughing so loud that Minghao couldn’t help but laugh with him
- The rest of the ride was filled with dumb laughter that brought tears to their eyes.
- They had so many more adventures together
- But one morning
- After a night of talking, where they both revealed their background, they both nearly passed out from exhaustion
- Minghao wan only awoken by a gloved hand clamping over his mouth
- Minghao immediately started thrashing around as three more of them held onto each of his limbs
- He thought about using his fire, but with his breathing constricted and his arms and feet restrained, it would easily get out of control and could even burn Jun
- So instead, he settled for kicking and trying to tug his hands out of their holds
- But they were too strong
- Next thing Minghao knew, he was tossed into the back of a transport truck that he remembered being in the very fist time he got to the facility
- Instead of throwing a tantrum like he had done that day, he ran to the small opening on the back doors, looking at the facility as it got farther and farther
- a part of him was hoping for one last glance at Jun
- He didn’t freak out like he did last time, he knew it was useless
- So he kept quiet the entire ride, sitting and leaning his head against the side, closing his eyes and thinking of no one in particular.
- When the truck stopped, Minghao brought himself back to reality and complied with whatever the soldiers told him to do
- He went through their tests, answered any questions they had, and stayed silent when they started lecturing him about how ‘Facility K will break him’
- The soldiers then threw him into a crowded cell, where he silently walked to the back corner, a venomous scowl on his face
- He plopped down on the bed, having the previous occupant scurry away
- For the rest of that morning, he laid there, staring up at the ceiling
- As the day went by, Minghao learned the hard way that it was nothing like Facility C
- They were forced to work miscellaneous jobs (mainly cooking which he had to learn by watching the others) and security was a lot tighter
- And there was a wide variety of different kinds of affected that he had never seen before
- Including this one ‘sun’ that seemed to look over them every now and then
- Minghao didn’t want to talk to anyone
- There was no one that could understand him like Jun could
- And the connection they built took years, so there was no way he could just start over
- So he stayed silent and watched everyone
- He watched the older kids mark down the days since they’ve been in the facility
- He watched the younger kids still filled with energy, running around with each other in hopes of keeping their youth
- But the main thing he watched was this one poor earth elemental who was constantly picked on by a group of older ones
- Minghao didn’t want to get involved or do anything, it just meant the kid would probably flock to him
- So he just watched
- He did feel bad for the kid, but the most he did was trip the ‘leader’ of the group on their way to work
- The group turned to glare at Minghao, only to meet his murderous eyes
- Immediately, they scurried away and Minghao smirked to himself
- Since then, he had the same reputation as he did before Jun
- And of course rumors managed to follow him and within a month, everyone was talking about how he set his family on fire
- He had gotten so immune to the talk about him nowadays that he was just amused by the rumors
- Some said that his family were his slaves and that he set them on fire because they got his drink wrong
- Others said that he was just so bored that he needed some excitement
- Either way, people avoided him and he didn’t have to talk to anyone
- His life was no longer unpredictable
- It was all routine
- He woke up, watched the earth elemental getting thrown around, went to work in the kitchens usually, then ate his nasty food, went back to work, and came back to the cell and went to sleep
- Life was simple and boring
- And not a day went by where he didn’t think of Jun
- He seemed to see him everywhere
- ‘Jun would like this soup’
- ‘Jun would joke about how stupid this all is’
- ‘Jun would hate it here but he’d say something like ‘as long as I’m with you, Hao Hao, it’s the best place I can think of.’’
- One day, when he was in the kitchen
- His thoughts of Jun was so overwhelming that he could even hear the boy call out his name
- “Hao Hao.”
- No...the voice was too clear to be in his head
- Minghao snapped his head up and looked around
- His heart nearly leapt out of his chest when he Jun, looking exactly the same with his bright smile, running over to wrap his arms around his body
- Minghao was frozen for a second, looking around at all the other fire elementals in the kitchen staring at them with wide eyes and the sun who was suddenly very interested in the ceiling design
- “I finally found you, Hao Hao.” Jun cheered, only for Minghao to let out a small scoff
- He wrapped his arms around Jun and felt himself melt into the older boy’s arms
- When they pulled away from each other, Minghao tried to fight the urge to smile
- “When did you get here?”
-  “Just a couple of weeks ago. You didn’t think I’d come for you did you? Hm? Hm?”
- Minghao rolled his eyes, “ I didn’t think you’d be able to do anything bad enough to end up here.”
-  “Well I did,” Jun said before perking up, “now come on, I made friends. Lemme introduce you to them!”
- Minghao scowled, “no thanks.”
- But knowing Jun, it was useless
- Jun grabbed Minghao’s wrist and pulled him out of the kitchen
- Minghao sent a glance back, but the sun made no move to chase after him
- Dreading the new people he would actually have to talk to, Minghao sulked the entire time as Jun skipped
- “Guys!” Jun said, stopping in front of a group of elementals
- Looking over at them, Minghao immediately recognized the little earth elemental from his cell
- “This is Minghao, my very best friend in the whole wide world!”
- At his words, Minghao rolled his eyes, but couldn’t help the smile that stretched on his lips
- “Call me The8.”
- Minghao was quick to realize that the group had heard of him before
- They knew of all the stories and adventures Jun and Minghao had together in Facility C
- though some of the stories they retold were a little more exaggerated than Minghao remembered
- Despite all the time he spent without talking to anyone, he was kind of excited to make new friends
- though he would never admit it
- Minghao developed little bonds with each of them
- He got close with Vernon, an air elemental, just by understanding each other’s need for peace and quiet every now and then
- He bickered with Mingyu, a water elemental, whenever he was talking about something ridiculous
- He looked after Dino, the little earth elemental, and even started to confront the bullies without him knowing
- needless to say, it just took one little burn for the bullies to stop
- And Minghao even started making friends with the healer that Mingyu brought over named Wonwoo
- He and Jun got closer than ever before, but it wasn’t just the two of them anymore
- It was the six of them against the world
- And it all expanded when they broke out of the facility
- It took a little longer to get Mingyu out, but once he was, their six turned into thirteen
- And next thing he knew, Minghao had a whole clan of people who knew him and respected him and maybe even loved him
- Minghao wouldn’t trade it for anything else.

Junhui’s Backstory
The Symbol of the Raindrop
Basic Information
A/N: Well this was longer than expected...
I laughed everytime I wrote ‘when Junhui’ cuz ‘Wen Junhui...get it? Ha.’
Warnings: Crappy ending, parent neglect, poor description of panic attack, that should be it
Tumblr media
(GIF not mine)
- As Junhui grew up, his parents were more than relieved when he didn’t show any signs of being an affected
- Junhui was born on a farm that was filled with animals and crops
- It wasn’t a strange sight to see baby Junhui around all of the animals, babbling mindlessly as if they understood
- But as time went by, babbling turned into talking
- And eventually, Junhui was having full conversations with the animals
- It wasn’t like he expected them to understand or anything, but he just needed someone to talk to
- It seemed like no one in his family would understand the theories he had
- And he had a lot
- So for a long while, none of his family even realized he was speaking in long and fluent sentences as a toddler
- And they definitely didn’t notice how he used bigger words that they probably wouldn’t be able to understand
- Junhui just talked to the animals
- It wasn’t until he turned five did his parents realize that he could move water with the slight movement of his glowing hand
- Since then, his family tiptoed around him and gave him anything he asked for
- They had heard the stories on the news of the affected children killing their own families, and they had to make sure that Junhui wouldn’t turn into one of those kids
- It didn’t exactly dawn on Junhui that his family was scared of him until he turned seven
- He was with the animals like usual and his father was almost twenty feet away from him, watering the crops
- Deciding that he could help his dad out, Junhui moved the water out of the bucket and spread it all over the rows of crops
- Junhui cheerfully ran up to his dad, only to have him let out a yelp and sprint away from his son
- That was the first time he noticed it
- From then on, there were smaller things that broke Junhui’s heart little by little
- The way his parents left when he walked into the room
- The way they jumped back when he moved his hand ever so slightly in their direction
- The way the two of them scurried about when he mentioned that he was hungry, as if trying to please him
- Junhui loved his parents, there was nothing that could take that away from him
- And it hurt him to be the reason for his family’s fear and stress
- So he caught them one day when they were eating breakfast early in the morning
- When they saw him sit down at the table in front of them, they rushed to gather their utensils and leave
- They only stopped with Junhui placed a brochure on the table in front of them
- Knowing that they’d be terrified to open it with him in the room, he stood up and walked away, eyes burning
- He had this planned for years, but he had finally managed to muster up the courage to actually do it
- The next day, he came downstairs with a bag in his hand
- There was already a soldier waiting at the front door
- ‘It’s better this way’ Junhui thought, ‘they don’t have to be scared anymore’
- His parents didn’t speak a single word, only watching after him as Junhui left with the soldier
- Junhui sent one last glance to all of the animals with a heavy heart as he climbed into the back of the transport truck
- There weren’t any words as they rode to the facility, just a tense silence
- When the car was finally at the outskirts of town, farther away from his home than he had ever been, Junhui saw a tall barricade with the letter ‘c’ plastered on the front
- The barricades opened and allowed the car to drive in
- All around, Junhui saw kids ranging from all ages trudging around the grounds
- They were in clusters of four different colors; blue, green, red, and yellow
- The first thing Junhui noticed about these kids was their blank looks as they stood in the courtyard
- It unsettled Junhui that there wasn’t the slightest trace of the sadness that he was feeling
- He was brought into a testing room and strapped down to a chair
- His testing started out fine at first, just answering questions about his abilities and showing them off
- But then they grabbed his foot and brought a machine to his ankle, inking the symbol into his skin
- Afterwards, they gave him a blue uniform and shoved him into a room
- The fresh ink in his ankle was burning with the cold air but all Junhui could do was wince
- “You’re gonna want to wrap that up or it’ll get infected.”
- Junhui snapped his head up and finally took a look around the room
- It was small and cramped with two beds against the walls with a single night stand in between them
- On one of the beds, a younger boy wearing a red uniform sat flipping through a book
- Junhui blinked at the boy for a moment, having the boy look up from the heat of his gaze
- With an annoyed huff, the boy closed his book and reached over to the nightstand and opened the drawer, taking out a piece of cloth and tossing it to Junhui
- “Thanks,” Junhui said,  pushing himself up to sit on the vacant bed
- He wrapped the cloth around his ankle, wincing slightly when it touched his inked skin
- Junhui then sat against the wall and kept his gaze on the younger boy reading a book
- There was a permanent frown on the younger boy’s face, but Junhui couldn’t help but find it cute
- “I’m Junhui, but you can call me Jun.”
- The boy didn’t look up from his book. “That’s good for you.”
- “Well, what’s your name?”
- The boy finally looked up from his book, only to give Junhui a glare
- Though, to Junhui he resembled something like a kitten trying to act like a tiger
- “Look, I don’t know how long you’re going to be in here and I don’t really care. Just because we’re roommates right now does not mean we’re friends. Just stay out of my way.”
- Junhui didn’t try to talk to the boy again for the rest of the day
- He sat in his corner, sulking and trying not to think about his parents’ look of relief when he finally left the house
- Though he couldn’t help his mind wander to what they would be doing now that he was gone
- Would they stay in the kitchen until they finished their meals? Would they walk through the animal paths instead of all the way around like they did in case Junhui was sitting with them? Would they finally smile?
- The next couple of days, Junhui stayed in his room
- His roommate came in and out, sometimes holding different objects, but never saying anything
- The only contact they had was when the boy gave Junhui some food so he didn’t starve to death
- When Junhui finally decided to go out
- He started to walk around the courtyard, keeping his eyes to the floor
- “Hey! Hey new kid!”
- Junhui looked up and saw a group of kids in different colored uniforms waving him over
- Curious, Junhui walked over
- “You’re The8′s new roommate, aren’t you?”
- Junhui blinked.
- “The8?”
- “Yeah, fire elemental, constant scowl on his face, everyone’s scared of him, the affected with the highest punishment record so far even though he’s only been here for two years?”
- Junhui furrowed his eyebrows together
- “What’s an elemental?”
- “Raindrops. We control the elements. Blue-” The kid gestured to Junhui- “is for water elementals, red is for fire, yellow is for air, and green-” The kid gestured to himself- “is for earth. This facility’s for elementals only.”
- “So are you The8′s roommate or not?” Another kid cut in quickly
- “Uh...I think so?”
- “Be careful, rumor has it, he burned his family down the second he found out about his powers. No reason too, he’s just insane!”
- “Yeah, and he hates water elementals. He burned one just for looking at him the wrong way!”
- Junhui stumbled back slightly, a frown on his face
- This kid was just ten, how could he do all these things
- “That can’t be true.”
- The other kids scoffed
- “Careful, that kind of thinking’s gonna get you in a lot of trouble.”
- little did Junhui know...the kid was right
- Junhui walked away from them
- This kid, the one who threw bread at him so he didn’t starve and kept to himself in the room...he couldn’t possibly be as dangerous and scary as they said
- For the next couple of weeks, Junhui avoided his roommate
- Junhui knew he shouldn’t listen to the other kids, but in the off chance that what they said was true...he just didn’t want to be a part of that
- But one day, when Junhui came back from his daily walk, his roommate was curled into a ball in the corner of his bed
- His hands were over his ears and his eyes were darting all around the room
- “What’s wro-”
- “Go away!”
- Junhui stepped back as if he were just punched
- Junhui had half a mind to turn around and leave, but seeing his roommate curled into a ball, pale and trembling, made something turn in him
- He took a step forward and the kid flinched back
- Slowly, Junhui approached his roommate and sat next to him on the bed
- When the kid made no move to protest, Junhui scooted closer and wrapped his arms around the boy’s body
- In the close proximity, he could hear the boy’s shallow breaths starting to slow down
- The kid’s skin was burning, but Junhui didn’t care
- Junhui tightened his hold around the boy until his shaking slowly stopped
- And even then, Junhui didn’t let go until the boy pushed his arms away
- “Th-thanks.”
- “Are you okay now?”
- The kid nodded and kept his gaze on his hands as Junhui shifted so he could sit in front of him
- “I’m Minghao.”
- Junhui let a smile tug on his lips
- “It’s nice to meet you, Minghao.”
- The way that Minghao’s name rolled off his lips just felt right
- A weak smile made its way onto Minghao’s face
- “Everyone else calls me The8, though.”
- “So I’ve heard.”
- There was no way that this kid was dangerous, and the twinkle in his eyes when he looked at Junhui confirmed it
- So it was then and there that Junhui promised himself that he would stay by this boy’s side
- Even if it meant helping him out when he tried to steal from the soldiers because god forbid this kid to have a safe hobby
- So for years, Junhui went along with whatever plan it was that Minghao had
- Sometimes he was a part of it, sometimes Minghao just told him about it, and other times he covered for Minghao when it had been a particularly bad one
- Minghao felt bad every time Junhui took his punishment and he stole him some new books or a lemon or something
- There were a couple of situations that were more memorable than the others
- Like the time Junhui had Minghao steal a chili pepper to put it in a fire elemental’s food because he was talking bad about Minghao behind his back
- But Junhui didn’t tell Minghao that
- “Why do you want to put it in his food exactly?”
- “Because, it’ll be funny, Hao Hao.”
- And it was
- The jumped up from his seat and breathed fire out of his mouth, right onto the hair of the poor girl next to him
- The soldiers didn’t know what to do and the rest of the elementals were in shock
- It set off a chain reaction and somehow, Junhui isn’t exactly sure how, the kid ended up in a tree
- Junhui and Minghao went back to their room and laughed about it for a good hour
- Another memorable time was when the two of them got so bored they started a riot in the courtyard
- The soldiers made the horrible mistake of interrogating them at the same time
- “Look,” The soldier had a fake smile on his face, “this can be really easy or really hard. It’s all up to you. Just say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to my questions, okay?”
- “No.”
- Junhui snapped his head to Minghao in shock, but when he saw the small and mischievous smile on his younger friend’s face, he couldn’t help but match it
- The soldier blinked at him
- “I haven’t asked a questio-”
- “No.”
- This time the both of them spoke at the same time, smiles widening
- The soldier just inhaled sharply
- “Did you two cause the riot?”
- “No,” Minghao answered
- “Yes,” Junhui said right after
- Minghao turned to Junhui and pointed at him, feigning shock
- “You?”
- “Not me,” Junhui pointed back at Minghao
- “Not me.”
- “Not me either.”
- The soldier let out a low growl and slammed his fists on the table, making Junhui straighten up
- He never did get used to all of the abuse
- “Are you two joking right now?”
- Needless to say, they didn’t see each other for a couple of weeks.
- And when they finally did, they were both covered head to toe with bruises and cuts and scratches
- The two were absolutely inseparable
- Until of course, they were actually separated
- Junhui woke up late in the afternoon
- The night before was one of the times they saw together in the middle of the room and talked about their lives before the facility
- Junhui couldn’t quite remember the number of chickens and pigs on his farm anymore, but he didn’t want to mention that
- When he looked to Minghao’s side of the room, he saw that it was completely empty
- No Minghao, no stolen objects, no trace of his friend at all
- So Junhui immediately began to panic
- He ran out of the room and into the courtyard, desperately searching for the scrawny boy
- But he couldn’t find him
- So he approached the facility’s known gossips
- “Hey, have you guys seen Hao H-The8. Have you guys seen The8 anywhere?”
- One of the girls scoffed
- “He finally got the boot.”
- Junhui furrowed his eyebrows
- “What do you mean?”
- Another boy stepped forward
- “What she means is he finally hit the limit in his punishments. The soldiers deemed him as ‘too dangerous and unstable’ and shipped him off to a bigger facility. Something like Facility K or J or even T.”
- Junhui’s world felt like it was crashing around him
- How would he know that the boy was okay without Junhui there? What if he tried messing around in the bigger facilities and got himself killed? What if he was scared without Junhui there but wouldn’t admit it?
- So of course, Junhui had the most logical plan
- He would get his punishment numbers up so he would get into the same facility as Minghao.
- For the next couple of months, Junhui had only one purpose; to reach the limit of punishments
- It was a lot harder than he thought, there were rumors of Minghao having around 2,000
- With the amount of shenanigans he pulled, the rest of the affected avoided him like the plague.
- There were times when he just stopped and thought ‘is this all worth it?’
- But then he looks over to Minghao’s empty bed and keeps going
- It only pushed him further when he got a new roommate
- It was some boy that he didn’t want to bother learning the name of
- The only thing that stuck with him was the conversation he overheard with the group of gossips and his new roommate
- “Hey! Hey new kid! You’re Jun’s roommate, right?”
- “Jun?”
- “Yeah, water elemental, devilish smirk always on his face, usually either getting punished or doing something to get punished?”
- Junhui didn’t want to listen to the rest
- It brought him back to his first week there so many years ago
- He nearly laughed when he thought about how cautious he was of the younger boy at first
- The same boy that always giggled about the randomest things when it was just the two of them
- Then it dawned on him
- He couldn’t remember what his smile looked like
- Did it reach his eyes? Did his nose scrunch up? Did all of his teeth show?
- Junhui couldn’t remember, it was all a blur
- So he went out and punched a soldier
- He was beat so bad he passed out halfway and regained consciousness four hours afterwards, every inch of his body sore and in pain
- ‘It’s worth it...it’s worth it for Minghao.’
- Finally, after more than a year of back to back punishments, Junhui was awaken in the middle of the night
- A hand was slammed over his mouth as the soldiers carried him out
- Junhui didn’t struggle, he didn’t fight back, part of him was even relieved that he was being taken away
- Of course part of him was scared that he was being sent to his death, but he tried not to focus on that
- He was thrown into the back of a truck with a couple of soldiers carrying guns
- The car ride was silent
- Junhui didn’t know how much time passed until they arrived in front of a large wall
- He looked out the small window in fascination as the walls started to open and allow the car to drive in
- The grounds of the new facility seemed bigger than the one in Facility ‘C’
- There was no one out in the courtyard, Junhui noticed, but he didn’t have enough time to ponder about it when the car stopped
- Next thing he knew, Junhui was thrown into a ‘testing room’ as the sign outside read
- He was asked to show his tattoo, then given a ‘stern talking to’ about how his behavior wouldn’t be tolerated there, but he just ignored it
- Then, he was given a new uniform and pushed into a cell
- Looking around, Junhui took note of all the differences from this facility and Facility C
- The room was bigger with four beds and more than fifty people
- There were walls on all sides of them except one, where there were bars that allowed them to be watched like caged animals
- A couple of the affected looked up when Junhui was thrown in, but the majority just ignored him
- “Hao Hao?” Junhui called gently, looking around in hopes of finding the familiar boy
- “Hey,” A voice called from behind him, having Junhui perk up and spin around with high hopes
- His excited demeanor immediately faded when he was face to face with a taller boy that was definitely not Minghao
- The boy had a kind smile with his canines poking out
- “Hi,” The boy greeted. “I’m Mingyu.”
- “Junhui,” He nodded back, still looking around
- “Where’d you come from? Cell 9? Cell 24?” Mingyu gasped. “Cell 17?”
- Junhui furrowed his eyebrows together.
- “Facility C.”
- The more he looked around the more frustrated he got when he realized Minghao wasn’t there
- “Woah, you’re from a different facility? That’s so cool!”
- Junhui let out a groan and dropped to the floor, digging his hands into his hair helplessly
- Junhui didn’t even move when Mingyu crouched down next to him and put a hand on his back
- “Hey, what’s wrong?”
- “My Hao Hao...” Junhui was mumbling incoherently now. “My best friend...I thought he would be...He should be here.”
- Junhui felt Mingyu wrap his arms around him and pull him close
- “It’s okay, it’s okay, you’ll be fine, the facility’s not as bad as you think...”
- Junhui let out a scoff and pushed Mingyu’s arm off of him
- “Not that,” Junhui brushed off. “I thought that my best friend would be here.”
- “Well maybe he’s in a different cell.”
- Junhui snapped his head up with wide eyes
- “You mean this isn’t all of the elementals?”
- “No, there are hundreds more here,” Mingyu chuckled. “Come on, I’ll introduce you to my friends at meal time before we have to go to work. We’ll look for your friend whenever we get the chance, okay?”
- “Work?”
- For a couple of hours before meal time, the two started to talk and get to know each other
- Junhui found out that Mingyu was a water elemental like him, that he came to the facility when he turned seven, that he was left handed, and he likes dogs
- When it was finally time for meal time, Mingyu excitedly dragged Junhui across the room
- They stopped at the end of the long table where two elementals looked up at Mingyu with furrowed eyebrows
- “Hey guys! This is my new friend, Junhui. He just got transferred here from Facility C!”
- One of the boys smiled at Junhui
- “It’s nice to meet you. I’m Vernon, that’s Dino.”
- Junhui took his introduction as a sign of acceptance and sat down next to Dino
- “You can call me Jun.”
- Junhui was quick to find out that the two boys were great listeners
- He was able to drone on and on about all of his adventures with Minghao
- And though he thought he was annoying them with the stories at times, they kept asking for more
- For the first time since Minghao, he felt himself connect with other people that were like him
- He learned that Mingyu was a social butterfly and got punished for talking a lot sometimes
- He learned that Dino was the excitable baby of the group-whether he admitted it or not-and had some strange beef with Mingyu
- He also learned that Vernon kept to himself most of the time and that he worked as a messenger all around the facility
- Junhui kept Vernon’s job in mind
- When it was time for them to work, Junhui followed Mingyu out the door and into the latrines
- Mingyu led him to a corner of the room and Junhui watched in horror as he used his water manipulation to gather the water from a bucket and clean the walls
- “Are you crazy?” Junhui hissed, grabbing onto Mingyu’s arm. “There are soldiers everywhere, they’ll see you?”
- Junhui was too busy looking around the latrines to notice the blank stare Mingyu gave him
- “Have you never used your water manipulation?”
- “Of course I have, how do you think I got punished half the time?”
- It took Mingyu a couple of explanations for Junhui to finally understand
- And when he finally did, he only felt excited to use his powers
- Even if it is to clean the bathrooms
- Since then, he fell into a small routine
- Junhui would wake up, chat with Mingyu about the randomest things, go to work before meal time on certain days, meet up with the other elementals for meal time, go to work, and then go back to the cells
- Only a week in and Mingyu broke his routine by breaking a mop and getting sent to the ‘floating dungeon’ as Mingyu called them but the other two said that was normal
- Eventually, Junhui finally found the courage to ask the question that was his main purpose for the longest time
- As the group of elementals started to exit the dining hall, Junhui grabbed onto Vernon’s arm and pulled him aside
- “I have a favor to ask of you,” Junhui spoke quietly, looking around to make sure no one was listening. “you have access to the command center, right?”
-  “I’m sorry, Jun, I already told the other guys, I can’t smuggle family mail or else they’ll actually kill me. It’s happened to the other messengers before.”
- Junhui widened his eyes in horror before shaking his head
-  “No, no, not the letters. I just...is there any way you can access the affected files? I don’t want to see it, I just want to know if my friend is here.”
- Vernon stared at Junhui for a second in confusion
- “The friend you’re always talking about?”
- “Yeah, he was transferred a year before me. I never knew where, but if there’s a chance he’s here, I want to look for him.”
- Vernon stayed quiet for an unsettlingly long time
- “What’s his name?” Vernon finally said
- Junhui’s heart nearly leapt out of his chest with excitement
- “Xu Minghao.”
- “Jun!” Mingyu called
- Junhui sent one last look at Vernon before running after Mingyu to get to work
- The next day at meal time, Junhui was telling Mingyu and Dino yet another story of his crazy adventures with Minghao
- “...so there I was, hot sauce on my phalanges-”
- “Vernon?”
- It was Dino’s voice from next to Junhui that made him stop and look up
- To his horror, he saw Vernon slipping into the seat next to Mingyu, large bruises on his face and around his face
- “Vernon? What the hell happened to you?”
- Junhui was frozen
- Part of him knew exactly what happened, but the other part didn’t want it to be his fault
- The rest of meal time, Junhui was quiet
- It was lucky that Mingyu was especially chatty that day because it didn’t raise any suspicion
- After meal time, as Junhui was walking out of the dining hall, he felt a hand on his arm
- When he turned, he saw Vernon staring at him with intent eyes
- “Xu Minghao,” Vernon said with a painfully rough voice before nodding
- Junhui’s heart dropped
- He knew he should have been grateful for the news, but how could he be when he was the reason for his friend’s pain
- Without thinking, Junhui pulled Vernon in for a tight hug
- “Thank you...so much.”
- When Junhui pulled away, he quickly wiped his eyes and bid Vernon a goodbye before catching up to Mingyu
- Finding Minghao wasn’t too hard after that
- For the next couple of days, he went around asking if anyone by the name of ‘Minghao’
- After a couple of days of failure, he then realized that he was probably asking about the wrong name
- And finally, he found out that Minghao was one of the few fire elementals that worked in the kitchens right before meal time
- So, when meal time came around, Junhui excitedly made his way to the kitchens
- When he got in, he started looking around and nearly exploded from joy when he saw the familiar scowl
- “Hao Hao,” Junhui called, having Minghao’s head snap up
- “Jun?” Minghao breathed
- Junhui watched as Minghao looked around before walking over to stand in front of him
- Though it had been only a year, Minghao looked different
- Junhui couldn’t say exactly what it was, but there was just something about Minghao’s face that wasn’t the same
- Overwhelmed with excitement, Junhui wrapped his arms around Minghao and pulled him into a bone crushing hug
- “I finally found you, Hao Hao.”
- Minghao let out a small scoff but wrapped his arms around Junhui nonetheless
- “When did you get here?”
- “Just a couple of weeks ago. You didn’t think I’d come for you did you? Hm? Hm?” Junhui teased, making Minghao roll his eyes
- “I didn’t think you’d be able to do anything bad enough to end up here.”
- “Well I did. Now come on, I made friends. Lemme introduce you to them.”
- “No thanks.”
- Junhui grabbed onto Minghao’s wrist and dragged him anyways
- He was so excited that he started skipping all the way to the end of the table
- “ Guys! This is Minghao, my very best friend in the whole wide world!”
- Junhui didn’t notice the way Minghao rolled his eyes, but he did see the way that his friend’s lips quirked up ever so slightly
- “Call me The8″
- At first Junhui was apprehensive as to how Minghao would fit into the group
- But once he and Mingyu started playfully bickering
- or at least what Junhui hoped was playful
- Junhui knew that he would be just fine
- The rest of the group also enjoyed the way that Minghao would always cut in on Junhui’s story telling and call him out for being too dramatic about what happened
- And eventually Mingyu dragged his friend Wonwoo into the group and Junhui was fascinated to say the least
- He came from a facility with all elementals, so he never met a different type of affected
- Junhui may have pestered Wonwoo with questions the first couple of weeks, but eventually got familiar with him enough to stop
- Being with each other instantly made life in the facility a lot easier
- The only downside was that instead of taking the fall for one person, he was taking it for three
- Because Wonwoo almost never gets punished and Vernon’s too peaceful to get into trouble
- Chan had a little tendency of getting into fights for a while and Junhui somehow convinced the soldiers that it was him in the fight
- “what do you mean it was you? you have no bruises anywhere”
- “are you kidding me? look at this bruise right here”
- “that’s a mole???”
- And sometimes when Minghao gets pissed and either passively says something or throws something at the soldier behind their back Junhui immediately takes the blame
- But the main thing that Junhui would get into trouble for was all of Mingyu’s clumsiness
- Whenever Mingyu tripped or dropped something, Junhui would speak up saying he pushed him in hopes of being the only one punished
- But everytime they’re both punished
- For the most part, Junhui was sent to the floating cages, but there are the occasional beatings and burning of hands
- Wonwoo usually heals the hands when no one’s looking and Junhui laughs off the injuries whenever someone expresses concern
- The punishments weren’t any different from the 1,700 that he endured in Facility C
- So there he was again
- In the floating dungeons, with a pointed glare at the smiling boy
- They didn’t know exactly how long they’d be in there, so they got as comfortable as they could
- They passed the time by talking and playing games that they made up
- Of course as time went by they got more and more tired and hungry and thirsty, but it somehow didn’t break their spirits
- Until they were awoken one night
- When Junhui opened his eyes, he was immediately met with an unsettling heat
- “Gyu! Gyu are you awake?”
- “What’s happening Jun?”
- As Junhui looked around, there was light coming from the other side of the tree and he could see and smell the smoke
- “Fire...” Junhui muttered before he snapped his head to Mingyu. “Fire!”
- “How the hell did the tree catch on fire?”
- “I don’t know, how the hell did that toilet catch on fire?”
- “Now is not the time for a lecture Jun!”
- Suddenly, Junhui heard a voice of their savior from afar
- “Mingyu! Jun!”
- “Vernon!”
- Junhui watched as Vernon hopped from branch to branch and landed on top of Mingyu’s cage in a cat like pose
- “Vernon, what’s happening?” Mingyu asked
- “Someone set the tree on fire, we have to get you out of here!”
- “How?”
- Vernon started to look around with furrowed eyebrows
- “You’re gonna have to get water from the tree.”
- “But the soldiers-”
- “The soldiers can’t punish you if you’re burnt to a crisp!”
- Junhui caught Mingyu’s eye and nodded before they both turned to the tree
- Junhui’s fingertips turned blue as he extracted water out of the tree
- When he got a good amount out, he held it in front of him and looked up to Vernon
- “What now?”
-  “Manipulate the water around the lock and use your ice breath to break it. Then I’ll carry you down.”
- Vernon took Mingyu down first before jumping back up for Junhui
- When he was on the floor with Mingyu, Junhui made sure the younger boy was okay
- As Vernon started to get the rest of the people down, Junhui turned and saw crowds of water elementals rushing forward with buckets so he dragged Mingyu to join them
- “Lucky we got away from that,” Mingyu breathed
- Junhui scoffed. “Lucky Vernon’s curious at heart.”
- Lockdown commenced after that night
- It wasn’t too bad since he had Mingyu with him
- He felt more sympathy for Vernon and Wonwoo who didn’t have anyone
- But being introverts they were probably thriving
- When months passed and the lockdown was over, Junhui excitedly wrapped his arms around the rest of his friends, joking about how Mingyu was driving him crazy
- He was disappointed when Wonwoo wasn’t able to sit with them, but he tried to wave to him from across the room whenever they met eyes
- Chan would talk on and on about his conspiracies about this group of affected called ‘two teen’ or something like that
- And Junhui was fully invested in the stories that Chan would tell them even if they were just stories
- He told Chan that he fully believed him but honestly he knew better than to hope for such a thing
- Until
- It was one of the few days when Junhui was split from Mingyu while working
- So he didn’t exactly know where the boy was when he met up with the others for meal time
- He took note that Wonwoo wasn’t there either, but that wasn’t too strange
- Junhui immediately started to tell a story about his and Minghao’s adventures while they ate
- And Minghao immediately criticized him for being too dramatic
- “...and then the boy literally started spitting fire! like a dragon!”
- “he coughed out one puff of smoke.”
- “Hao Hao you’re no fun”
- He was just about to continue when Mingyu came racing towards them
- When Mingyu stopped in front of them, he put his hands on his knees and started breathing heavily
- “Guys!” He panted, “Wonwoo was...I just...I saw...”
- Junhui heard Minghao scoff from next to him
- “Words, Gyu. Words.”
- “Wonwoo escaped. He’s gone.”
- There was a pause of shock amongst the four
- Vernon was the first to talk as Mingyu took his seat next to Vernon
- “What do you mean gone?”
- “ “As in he ran off with these...these bandits or something!” His eyes were wide as he looked at his friends. “And I could have sworn I saw the sun. You know, the one that watched over us every now and then? The scary one?”
- Junhui nodded as he thought back to the boy that stood at the side with a deadly glare
- He had witnessed the sun control an affected that was misbehaving once and ever since then he was terrified
- It was something that he kept between him and Mingyu, but also joked about every now and then
- So Junhui was just in disbelief when Mingyu revealed that it was the terrifying sun that busted one of his best friends out of the facility
-  A week later
- The group was sitting at their random spot and Junhui was intently listening to baby Dino excitedly talk about something that happened at work
- “...and just before the boulder hit him, I punched in the air and it explo-”
- Before Dino could even finish his sentence, a loud bang echoed throughout the room
- “Everyone get down! Get down!” Shouted an unfamiliar voice
- Junhui only had a split second to look up before Minghao dragged him under the table
- The only thing he saw were two soldiers carrying rifles and pointing them at the other soldiers
- Junhui clung onto Minghao tightly to keep himself grounded
- to say he was freaking out internally was an understatement
- After everything he went through to get back to his best friend, he was not going to let either of them get shot
- An ear splitting screech filled the room and Junhui felt Minghao’s hands immediately press around his ears
- Slowly, as Minghao released his hands from Junhui’s head, he could have sworn he heard Vernon’s name getting called
- “Vernon it’s me!”
- Junhui snapped his head up once he realized that someone was actually calling for Vernon
- “Seungkwan?”
- Junhui turned and exchanged a look with Minghao before looking back at Vernon
- Him, Dino, and Mingyu were all looking at someone standing on top of the bench that Minghao and Junhui were under
- “Get up, we’re busting you and your friends out of here.”
- Junhui saw Dino scramble to his feet as Mingyu crouched down to help pull the two out
- Junhui saw a boy, Seungkwan he assumed, wearing black clothes standing on top of the bench
- “They’re coming!” One of the rifle holding soldiers shouted into the dining hall with his eyes glued outside
- When Junhui turned back to look at Seungkwan, he saw him rushing down the bench with Vernon following
- Mingyu stood back to help the rest onto the bench before climbing on and following after
- When they got to the doors, Junhui kept his hand on Minghao’s wrist as Seungkwan, Dino, and Vernon started to hold off the soldiers
- When they walked forward, Junhui felt Minghao tap on his hand and immediately let go
- He took a couple of steps back and smiled as Minghao’s body started glowing orange from under his uniform and he swiped a flame back and forth at the soldiers, keeping them away
- Once they were out of the crowd, Seungkwan immediately sprinted to the front with Vernon keeping in step
- Junhui grabbed onto Minghao’s hand and they followed behind as Seungkwan lead them towards the gates
- As they got closer and closer to the front, Junhui saw Dino stumble next to him
- “Mingyu! No!”
- Junhui whipped his head back and felt his heart drop when he saw a crowd of soldiers surround Mingyu
- “What happened?” Vernon called
- “He pushed me forward!” Dino cried
- Junhui grabbed onto Dino’s hand
- There was no way another one of them would be left behind
- “We’ll come back for him!” Seungkwan shouted
- The floor started to quake underneath them as they got closer to the gates
- Junhui saw a familiar person at the top of the wall as a giant branch reached over the wall and touched the floor on their side
- “Wonwoo!” Vernon called with a smile
- “Hurry! They’re right behind you!” Wonwoo shouted back
- Junhui helped Dino onto the branch first before Minghao
- He stepped on and looked back at Vernon, who just nodded his head to the side of the wall as Wonwoo started to lift the branch
- “Vernon get on!” Seungkwan shouted
- “He can jump.” Junhui reassured him
- When the branch was horizontal, the four walked onto the wall and hopped off as Wonwoo moved the branch back down to the other side
- “I didn’t know he could do that,” Junhui muttered
- “Where’s Mingyu?” Wonwoo frantically asked
- Junhui tightened his grip on Minghao’s hand as Wonwoo panicked about the missing boy
- “It’ll okay, Jun,” Minghao said in a low tone
- “What if we don’t get him back, Hao Hao? Who knows what they’ll do to him.”
- Minghao brought his other hand to Jun’s shoulder and rubbed circles into it
- “We’ll get him back, Jun. It’ll be okay.”
- “We have to go now,” One of the saviors called, throwing a rope down and tying it to the bar along the edge of the wall
- “Come on, Dino, you first,” Junhui said, helping the youngest boy climb over the bars and grab onto the rope
- After he was down, Junhui helped Minghao over before climbing down himself
- When everyone was on the floor, they started running again
- Junhui turned and glanced at Minghao
- And despite the despair he felt over his friend and comrade, he couldn’t help but smile
- They were free

Soonyoung: what would you do if you found out you're related to Genghis Khan
Seokmin: Who?
Soonyoung: are you-
Soonyoung: are you serious?
Seokmin: History doesn't do it for me. I still haven't grasped the concept of a Nazi.

This is literally the coolest thing I have ever seen oh my-
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is my take on the power marks from @mylovelyfandoms Dystopian AU
(the other one is just in 'wallpaper form') Note: I couldn't think up of a way to incorporate the letters for the lightning bolt symbols, so I'm very sorry about that :(
But my explanation for that is:
1.) The symbol for chlorokinetic healing are sun rays on top of the cloud which is one of the main source of plants in order to grow. So it's somehow related to plants? (Did I make sense?)
2.) Sonic scream has a symbol of lines through the lightning bolt, this line could indicate to waves. Though it may be ironic to have a straight line when sound has dynamic waves..
Other than those two, the Raindrops and Stars has pretty much their letters incorporated in their symbols
Here's Mr. Kwon doing his best to explain the symbols:
Tumblr media
And a "sneak peak" of a note taking thingy... (Wow words.. My brain is seriously not functioning rn.) I made just 'cause
Tumblr media
Again this is my take on the power marks so there would be inaccuracy to what the author have imagined or explained.
@mylovelyfandoms : I'm really sorry if I butchered it! I'll take it down if you asked me to. But I'm very excited for the story! eventhough I haven't finished reading all of their back stories, it really inspired me and a friend of mine to draw. Thank you very much for this! 💕

Chan’s Backstory
The Symbol of the Raindrop
Basic Information
A/N: I read over Hansol’s Backstory and I realized I accidentally wrote that they spoke English so sorry about that...
Warnings: The word ‘condom,’ teenage pregnancy, abandonment, bullying, guilt, and I think that’s it??

(GIF not mine)
- It all started with a young couple
- It was the first day of summer for their school, so they went to a friend’s party in celebration of their freedom
- Everything was perfect
- But then, one shot too many and a three year old condom later, the girl started to feel off
- For a couple of days, it was just a feeling in her chest
- But then, she started throwing up at routine times in the morning
- She started to feeling tired and fatigued even when she wasn’t doing anything
- The girl told her boyfriend, but he just brushed it off
- But she was still suspicious
- So she went to the local pharmacy and bought the one stick that would determine the rest of her life just by peeing on it
- And there was a plus sign
- Once she told her boyfriend, the young couple agreed to run away together, terrified of what their parents would do if they found out
- So they took all the money they could from their savings and just started driving
- They drove all around the land of the unaffected and ended up a couple of towns down where no one knew who they were
- They had new lives
- And nine months later, the girl went into labor
- The two went to the local doctors and prepared for a natural birth
- But the girl spiked a fever of 40 Celsius
- So they rushed her to the operating room and started on a C-section
- When they finally managed to cut her open and take her baby boy out, they nearly dropped him back in
- The baby’s skin was burning like he was on fire
- So he must have caught her fever
- It wasn’t exactly the only diagnosis they had for this baby, but it was definitely the one they hoped was true
- The young couple were lucky enough to stumble into a hospital that was accepting of the affected
- They kept him in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) for a couple of days to keep an eye on him
- And a week later, his temperature was back down to a normal baby’s and they were able to take him home
- They named their baby ‘Chan’ and loved him to bits and pieces
- They had a nursery for him with dinosaur wallpapers and stuffed animals
- Chan’s dad was a little obsessed with dinosaurs
- The three of them were a happy little family for a good year until their parents found them
- Chan’s grandparents were furious
- They were disgusted with the baby and forced the three of them to go home
- And once they did, there was a lot of arguing
- The adults were trying to drill it into the young couple that there was a possibility that Chan could be an affected and wanted to bring him to get tested
- But Chan’s parents refused
- They were a part of the younger generation and detested the way that the adults outcasted the affected
- They wanted to keep Chan safe no matter what
- But with some horrible luck, Chan started to cry and scream at all of the arguing
- When Chan’s mother walked up to him in an attempt to calm him down, he swung his hand, his body glowing orange as a flame hit his mother’s face
- She cried out and fell to the floor, but that only made Chan cry even harder
- Chan’s father immediately ran to his girlfriend’s side and tried to soothe her
- Chan’s father went with his girlfriend and her family to the hospital, leaving his son with his own parents
- He trusted that they wouldn’t do anything, but boy was he wrong
- Chan’s grandparents wrapped him in a blanket, placed him in a basket, and made their way to the soldier base
- They set him down in front and banged on the doors, turning around and left him behind
- Upon seeing him, the soldiers brought Chan in to start testing him in ways they should never do to a baby
- Once they learned Chan was able to manipulate fire, he was sent to the closest facility to that base
- The other affected that were watching the newcomers were horrified when they saw a baby in the group of new kids
- And since he was brought in so young, he couldn’t work yet
- So he grew up in a cell
- He was basically adopted by the oldest ones in his cell since none of the soldiers were going to take care of him
- But he was still too young to understand anything that was happening
- He barely even understood what was going on when he turned three and all of his caretakers were taken away
- All he knew was that he was left behindagain
- Two year later, he was brought into the testing room again
- Chan was confused to say the least when he wasn’t able to make fire like he had been before
- And then he was absolutely bewildered when he was able to lift a piece of the floor up just by stomping
- He was then brought into the next room where they held him down and lifted his shirt, drawing a tattoo at his lower abdomen
- He didn’t even scream or struggle
- He was used to the pain already at this point
- Almost right after, he was thrown into work
- He was herded into the rest of the ‘E Raindrops’ as the soldiers called them
- There were a couple of people he recognized from his cell so he tried to go up and talk to them
- But then they were taken away by the soldiers for socializing when they weren’t supposed to
- That was the first time Chan was beat
- From then on, the rest of the affected avoided Chan
- They didn’t want to get beat just by talking to him
- Even if that wasn’t the case
- But that never stopped Chan
- He kept trying to talk to people around him in the cells or during mealtime
- Never at work anymore...he learned his lesson
- But his reputation preceded him so people either snapped at him to leave them alone or just ignored him
- Some kids eventually started to mess with him for the fun of it
- They knocked his food tray out of his hands, knowing that he would either have to eat it off the filthy floor or starve
- They knocked him over when he was focusing on his work
- They even beat him when they were out in the courtyard
- And of course the bullies never had to worry about the soldiers because they were probably just watching with amusement
- So eventually, Chan just stopped talking to people
- He stopped going up to them and asking if they wanted to sit together at meal time
- He just sat quietly and didn’t even speak up when the bullies messed with him
- So one day, the same group of bullies were doing what they usually did
- They were trying to corner Chan since it would be easier to beat up the poor kid
- When they were barely a foot away, the biggest bully lifted his arm, ready to pummel the younger boy
- But then, as if it were an angel sent down to protect him, someone landed right in between the bullies and Chan
- Chan was honestly confused as to where this boy came from, but he pushed the feeling away and was just grateful
- There was a strange look on the boy’s face, Chan observed
- The boy was facing the left, staring straight at the building in front of him with confusion before looking back down at the strange bracelet on his hand that was shaking
- The bully’s fist connected with the strange boy’s arm and immediately he yelled out and retracted the hand as if he was just burned
- The strange boy turned to look at him as if he just noticed the bullies for the first time
- “Oh! I’m-”
- “Let’s get out of here!” The biggest bully shouted, running away with the rest of the kids following after him
- Chan stared at the boy in shock, but he never turned around to face him
- The strange boy just shrugged and turned to the right and started to run in a speed that Chan didn’t know was possible
- For the next couple of days, word spread about how Chan was protected by the strange boy
- No one touched him
- Chan was relieved and he wanted to find the boy, just to talk to him and thank him
- However, Chan didn’t even know where to start
- So for the next week, he sat down by himself like he usually did, but this time, there was no fear that someone was about to take his food
- But one day, he was sitting alone in his usual spot when a group of older elementals that he had never seen before approached him
- “Get lost, kid. We’re going to sit here.”
- “But why do I have to go?”
- The older elemental scoffed. “Because we don’t want to sit with some brat. Now scram.”
- Chan knew better than to oppose anyone
- People had just stopped bullying him
- So, he picked up his tray and started to walk around the dining hall, looking for an empty place to sit
- When he finally approached the end of the elementals table, Chan saw him
- The strange boy
- He was sitting alone just like Chan had for the past couple of years
- Chan took a breath, suddenly feeling nervous about meeting his saviour
- “Hi, can I sit with you?”
- The strange boy snapped his head up and stared at Chan for an uncomfortably long time
- His expression was confused, so that’s when it dawned on Chan
- ‘He doesn’t know who I am’
- So quickly, he had to make up a reason as to why he needed to sit with the boy
-  “The older elementals won’t let me sit near them.”
- The strange boy nodded and gestured to the empty seat in front of him with a piece of stale bread that he had been eating
- Chan’s body flooded with joy
- This strange boy was the first person to ever let him sit with them
- Trying to hide his excitement, Chan dug into the food
- He then looked back up at the strange boy when he managed to calm down a little
- “What’s your name? I’m Lee Chan.”
- Chan had a couple of memories from his life on the outside
- The elementals that took care of him had asked him what he remembered and made sure that he held onto it
- Something about ‘keeping him human’
- So Chan knew his surname
- The boy in front of him had a soft smile
- “My name is Hansol, but you can call me Vernon. It’s my middle name.”
- “Oh.”
- Chan started to think
- ‘If he can get called something other than his first name, then so can I. But what?’
- Chan smiled, a small memory from his life on the outside flashing in his mind
- “Well in that case, you can call me Dino.”
- Vernon let out a soft giggle, but Chan could tell that it wasn’t mocking like all of the bullies...it was kinder
- “Why Dino?”
- Chan brightened up
- He always loved his own thought process, but no one ever talked to him long enough for him to tell people about it
- “Because I’m an earth elemental, and the way I stomp around to manipulate the earth makes me feel like a dinosaur.”
- Vernon let out another giggle and this time, Chan joined in
- Chan talked on and on and Vernon listened with great interest, chiming in every now and then
- And that’s how their dynamic was everyday
- Chan would talk and Vernon would listen
- The few days that Vernon did feel like talking, Chan made sure to pay extra attention, just so his new friend felt comfortable with him and didn’t leave
- So Chan finally had a new friend
- But unfortunately for him, the bullies picked up on the fact that Vernon was harmless
- So they started to pick on Chan again
- But Chan would never admit it
- He just brushed off the bruises and cuts as beatings from the soldiers
- One day, Chan and Vernon were sitting at their spot at the bench as per usual
- Chan was talking about his day, making sure to leave out the part where he was shoved to the floor by bullies of course, when someone took a seat next to Vernon
- Chan stopped mid-sentence, looking at the taller boy who had a bright smile on his face
- He offered a hand to Vernon, and Chan immediately felt a jolt of jealousy
- Vernon was his friend, why couldn’t he find another one?
- “I never properly introduced myself. My name is Mingyu.”
- Chan’s heart dropped a little when Vernon took Mingyu’s hand and shook it
- Suddenly, the feeling of being left behindthat was once a memory came flooding back to him
- Mingyu then turned to Chan with the same bright smile and offered him a hand
- “What’s your name?”
- Chan raised an eyebrow at the hand and hesitantly took it
- “Dino.”
- “That’s so cool! Did you know that some dinosaur tails were over 45 feet long? That’s like at least five of me!”
- Chan forced a smile on his face
- The only connection he had with the outside was his small knowledge of dinosaurs
- He didn’t even know where he knew it from, but he did
- “Yes. I did.”
- Eventually, Mingyu just became a part of his life whether he wanted him to or not
- Chan remained civil with Mingyu because he didn’t seem like he was trying to take Vernon away, but he could never be too cautious
- There were times where Mingyu wasn’t around
- Sometimes he had gotten in trouble again for being so clumsy
- Other times he was somewhere else in the dining hall, being the social butterfly Chan wished he was
- The fact that Mingyu was effortlessly able to make friends just made Chan like him less
- But still, when Mingyu was away, the atmosphere felt weird
- It was like there was something missing from them
- But Chan just ignored the feeling
- He didn’t like Mingyu and he was pretty sure that nothing he did would ever make Chan like him
- Especially now as Mingyu stood before the two with his hands on another boy’s shoulders
- Another boy just meant it was more likely that they would take his friend away
- And taking his friend away meant that he didn’t have safe place to go to after the soldiers beat him or when the bullies messed with him
-  “Hey guys! This is my new friend, Junhui. He just got transferred into here from Facility C!”
- Chan glared holes into the side of Mingyu’s head, but the tall boy didn’t notice
-  “It’s nice to meet you. I’m Vernon, that’s Dino.”
- Chan whipped his head over to his friend and saw Vernon smiling at the new boy, bringing a pout to Chan’s lips
- The new boy didn’t quite seem to notice, instead taking a seat next to Chan while Mingyu took one next to Vernon
- “You can call me Jun.”
- Chan’s anger towards Jun immediately started to fade away once the boy started to talk
- Jun was probably one of the funniest people Chan had ever met
- There was just something about the way that Jun told a story that just hooked Chan on
- So, maybe Jun wasn’t so bad
- But Chan was still and would probably be forever cautious of Mingyu
- As time went by, the group only grew
- First it was Jun’s friend, The8
- Chan didn’t know much about him, just that he stayed in the same cell as him
- He had never talked to the boy until Jun introduced him to everyone, but he knew that The8 was one of the scariest elementals in the facility
- Chan didn’t really think that The8 liked him, but then he started to notice how Chan’s bullies started to stay away
- So maybe The8 wasn’t that bad
- And then Mingyu’s friend, Wonwoo came along
- Wonwoo wasn’t an elemental, so Chan was all the more suspicious of him
- Why would a healer want to be friends with a group of elementals?
- But over time, Chan learned to get along with Wonwoo
- He was still being too stubborn to get along with Mingyu
- Everything was routine for a while
- Chan would wake up, go to work, meet up with his friends at meal time, go back to work, and back to the cells
- Sure there were some instances where one of them (including Chan) got in trouble, but other than that it was normal for Chan
- But one night, Chan was woken up by a blaring alarm
- Immediately, he went to find The8
- These kinds of things never happened before, but that just made it all the more scary
- But of course, Chan would never admit that he was scared
- “The8!” Chan called once he saw his friend
- “Hey, stick by me, it’s alright,” The8 replied, wrapping a protective arm around Chan, who didn’t make any move to push it off
- “Everyone out!” The soldiers bellowed
- If The8 noticed the way Chan flinched, he didn’t say anything. And Chan was grateful for that
- When they were outside, Chan looked around and saw the affected from other cells piling out as well
- But among them, there was a thick cloud of smoke that came from a tree that was lit on fire
- Chan whipped his head to look at The8, but The8 was staring at the tree in horror
- But Chan didn’t exactly know why
- The soldiers started shouting for the affected to stay in groups according to their cells
- The specific soldiers for each cell herded them together and publicly beat the ones they didn’t recognize, even if they were in the right place
- “’F’ Raindrops! Gather around here!”
- Chan turned to look at The8
- The8 grabbed Chan by the shoulders and looked him in the eyes with concern
- “Stay right here, got it? I’ll be back soon.”
- Chan nodded silently with a lump in his throat
- With the soldiers, he wasn’t sure if that would be true
- Chan kept his eyes on the tree as the water elementals started to put it out
- “Looks like someone’s a scaredy cat,” A heckling voice called from behind Chan
- Chan ignored the bullies, knowing they wouldn’t do anything because of their fear of The8
- So he kept his gaze up at the tree
- “Dino”
- Chan’s gaze snapped down and he saw Vernon jogging towards him
- “What’s everyone doing out?”
- Chan furrowed his eyebrows together
- Did he not get called out?
- “The soldiers wanted to keep us all in one place while they questioned the fire elementals I think.”
- “Why? They won’t care if we burn.”
- Chan shrugged, “I think it’s because if we all die they can’t test on us or something.”
- Once the elementals were sent back to their cells, it was near morning
- So there really was no point in going back to sleep
- Instead, Chan paced the room as he waited for The8 to return
- If he returned
- And much to Chan’s relief, he did
- “What happened? Are you okay?”
- The8 chuckled softly and ruffled Chan’s hair
- “Yeah, I’m fine. They just interrogated me in front of a senser to see if I was the one that set the tree on fire.”
- “Do you think it was an elemental?”
- The8 looked off to the side
- “I don’t think so.”
- The facility was on complete lockdown for the next couple of months
- So that meant they weren’t allowed to leave their cells for anything
- Not even meal time
 - Chan didn’t know why until he listened in on the soldiers’ conversations one day
- “...seventeen or something like that.”
- “So has anyone found them yet?”
- “No not yet. We keep getting close but right when we think we got them, they’re gone.”
- “How many have they gotten out?”
- “I think it was the three of them, four more stars, and two clouds.”
- “Clouds? How did they get the clouds out from isolation?”
- “No clue. These affected are getting smarter and smarter.”
- Chan immediately rushed over to where The8 was laying and told him everything
- The8 didn’t seem to believe him, but he let Chan talk about it whenever he heard new information
- Eventually, when lockdown was over but security was heavier than ever and it just seemed to be getting worse
- Wonwoo wasn’t allowed to sit with them anymore, so it was just the five elementals
- And Chan chattered excitedly about the group of escapees called ‘seventeen’
- It had become the main topic for the affected for a while
- Vernon and The8 didn’t believe it, but Mingyu and Jun did
- But that didn’t stop Chan from talking about it
- One day, Chan met up with the other elementals as he usually did
- Jun, The8, and Vernon were there, but Wonwoo and Mingyu weren’t
- It wasn’t rare for one of the elementals to be missing, but for Wonwoo it was just strange
- As Chan sat down and ate his food, Mingyu came sprinting towards them
-  “Guys! Wonwoo was...I just...I saw...”
- “Words, Gyu, words!”
- “Wonwoo escaped. He’s gone.”
- “What do you mean gone?”
- Mingyu sat down in his seat next to Vernon, looking at the rest of the group with wide eyes
- “As in he ran off with these...these bandits or something! And I could have sworn I saw the sun. You know, the one that watched over us every now and then? The scary one?”
- Chan smiled
- So it was true after all
- And someone he knew, someone he was friends with, managed to get out
- Chan was beaming with pride
- Even if it wasn’t him that had escaped, he was happy that his friend was able to experience the freedom he would never get
- A week passed and everything was as normal as it could be
- Chan was just talking to his friends about something that happened during work when the doors slammed open with a loud bang
- Two shoulders stormed in with rifles in hand, pointing them around the room and shouting at everyone to get down
- It wasn’t like soldiers never carried around rifles, but it was just unsettling that two of them would run in with them
- As everyone sank to the floor, Chan followed the suit, trying not to show his fear
- Mingyu put a hand on Chan’s back, but that only made him spiteful rather than comforted
- There was a ear shattering scream that made Chan flinch, only for Mingyu to hold him tighter
- But Chan just ignored the boy, digging his face into the floor
- “Vernon”
- Chan stiffened up, cursing whoever had just called for his friend
- Who would talk at a time like this?
-  “Vernon it’s me!”
- Chan looked up once he realized that the voice was coming from above them
- There was a boy standing on top of the benches, looking down at Vernon
- “Seungkwan?” Vernon asked, having Chan whip his head to him
- Vernon did mention making a friend before
-  “Get up, we’re busting you and your friends out of here.”
- At the news, Chan scrambled to his feet followed by the rest of their group
- “They’re coming!” One of the soldiers at the door shouted at the boy, Seungkwan
-  “Okay, we gotta go, like, now.”
- Seungkwan turned and started running on the bench so none of the affected on the floor would get in his way
- Vernon jumped on the bench and followed after him
- Chan started to climb onto the bench and Mingyu started to help him onto it
- There was a small part of Chan that got annoyed with Mingyu, but he just pushed the feeling down and focused on getting out
- When the group got to the door, they were immediately met with a large army of soldiers running towards them
- “Cover your ears!” Seungkwan shouted and Chan immediately brought his hands to the side of his head
- Chan watched as a strange kind of ripple in the air shot at the soldiers, having them pause in their step, bring their hands to their ears for a moment, and keep running
-  “I don’t get it, that was supposed to mess with their earpieces!” Seungkwan exclaimed
- With a small sense of urgency, Chan pushed past Seungkwan.
- Getting into a stance with his feet shoulder width apart and knees bent, Chan stomped one foot on the floor like he had done many times before and felt around for the exact spot in the earth that he wanted to move
- He lifted his arm up and saw a large block from the floor follow
- Then, he pushed his hands out, having the block slide towards the middle of the crowd of soldiers and push them back
- When Chan was satisfied with the clearing of soldiers, Vernon stepped up next to him
- Chan watched as Vernon took a deep breath before pushing his hands towards the soldiers
- The sides of his head started to glow an icy blue, almost white
- Though Chan couldn’t see anything different in the air, he heard the whistling of wind and saw the soldiers flying backwards
- “Come on!” Seungkwan shouted before running to the soldiers towards the gate
- As they ran through the crowd of soldiers, Chan watched from behind as The8′s body started to glow as used his fire manipulation to keep the soldiers back
- When the group was out of the crowd, they started to run as fast as they can
- But for Chan, that wasn’t very fast
- He knew that he had to keep going as they wove through the facility, but he was an earth elemental...something about them were just kind of slow
- Chan was starting to fall behind as they approached the closed gates
- Seungkwan and Vernon were far ahead with Jun and The8 close behind
- Chan was a good three feet away from the rest of the group and he couldn’t seem to close the gap
- Mingyu was next to him, but Chan knew deep down that Mingyu could go faster than he was going at the moment
- “I’m not going to make it...I’m not going to make it,” Chan muttered to himself as he glanced over his shoulder to see the soldiers less than a foot behind him, reaching out to grab his arm
- Before he could say anything, Mingyu grabbed his wrist and roughly yanked him forward
- Chan felt two hands on his back pushing him forward, making him stumble into step with The8 and Jun
- “Mingyu! No!” Chan cried as he looked back to see the soldiers pulling Mingyu towards them, pushing him to the floor and surrounding him
- “What happened?” Vernon demanded, having Chan turn his head back to the front
- “He pushed me forward!”
- “We’ll come back for him!” Seungkwan shouted breathlessly
- Chan sent another glance back, heart dropping when he saw Mingyu’s limp body getting dragged away
- His mind was so clouded with guilt that he barely registered the floor rumbling from under him
- He only came back to reality when a large branch started to reach down from the top of the wall
- “Wonwoo!” Vernon exclaimed, having Chan look up and smile at the familiar face
-  “Hurry! They’re right behind you!”
- Vernon ran to the back of the crowd helping everyone onto the branch
- The small gesture made Chan’s heart hurt since Mingyu had done the same thing when he helped everyone onto the branch
- Chan had been too stubborn to realize that Mingyu was actually a good friend
- But now it was too late
- “Vernon get on!” Seungkwan shouted, snapping Chan out of his pity party to see the branch rising until it horizontal
- “He can jump,” Jun informed Seungkwan
- The group on the branch started to walk onto the wall
- Wonwoo’s hands were glowing green as he brought the branch back down to the other side of the wall, burying it back in the ground
- There were a couple more people that Chan didn’t recognize, but from the way they weren’t trying to attack them, Chan knew they were on their side
- Wonwoo started to look at the group with wide eyes, his posture growing more and more frantic
- Chan knew exactly what Wonwoo was going to ask, and he felt horrible for it
-  “Where’s Mingyu?”
- Chan knew that Wonwoo and Mingyu were close, closer than Mingyu was with anyone else in the group
- It felt like he was telling a loved one about their dead relative
- But after all, it was like that wasn’t it? Getting caught only meant the worst...
- “I was... I was falling behind so he...he grabbed my arm and pulled me forward so that the soldiers would get him instead of me.”
- Chan looked down in shame
- He knew that it wasn’t his fault that Mingyu sacrificed himself, but it was his fault that he didn’t let Mingyu know how much of a good friend he was
- “What?” Wonwoo ran past Chan, but he couldn’t bring himself to look up
-  Chan heard Wonwoo shout desperately, begging to go back for him
- The fact that Wonwoo was never the type to show emotion broke him
-  “We have to go now” One of the unfamiliar boys said, ushering Chan towards the edge of the wall where another boy dropped a rope and tied it to a bar
- “Come on, Dino. You first,” Jun said, helping Chan climb over the bars and grab onto the rope
- Once everyone was on the floor, they ran again
- Chan couldn’t shake his thoughts away from Mingyu
- The guilt only got worse as they arrived at some sort of hidden campsite
- Mingyu would have loved this...
- “Welcome to our camp,” One of the rescuers said as he pulled on a glove. “My name is S. Coups and I’m the leader of our clan, ‘Seventeen.’”
- “Hey,” Jun said in a low tone as he walked up to stand next to Chan
- Chan didn’t look up. He didn’t want to meet his eyes after what he did
- “What happened to Mingyu wasn’t your fault.”
- Despite his friend’s words, Chan couldn’t shake the feeling
- So, after S. Coups explained to them that they would be going on missions, Chan immediately went to the side of the camp to train
- Chan was going to make sure that no one was left behind again
