For my sister, I leaned pretty heavily into medicine, giving her a role more similar to that of Shinobu within the Corps: not primarily a fighter, and helping treat wounds sustained by other slayers in battle as a healer. My sister is, in the real world, a doctor, and I have massive respect for the amount of hard work she’s put into getting to where she is now. She’s such an inspiration honestly <3

I know that this is a very unpopular opinion but hear me out!

I think not enough people consider Corvo as an unreliable narrator. We see the story from his point of view and all we know about Jessamine Kaldwin comes from his perspective. So, to think on that, do we really know how good Jessamine was as the Empress? 

I know that she is usually portrayed as a good person if not a saint but what if it wasn't that way? A lot of people in the streets are indifferent towards her image, if not hostile; the situation with Delilah; how both Geoff Curnow and Corvo are treated because of their nationality; two hatters recalling how greatly Corvo dealt with workers uprising under her command  – a lot of things are a tell-tale signs that something is not quite right. 

And at this point I have to clarify that I'm not saying things like "boo no I hate Jessamine". No, it's actually quite the opposite, I love her character. But the way it is usually portrayed seems to be so dull and static. Let her not be a saint. 

Let her be manipulative. Let her tell Corvo that "he is not like other serkonans, he is sooo special and that's why he is where he is and not somewhere deep in the silver mine", while being (just as any nobility in Gristol) not very welcome to any outlanders. 

Let her be power-hungry and afraid to lose this power. Remember a bonecharm in her hidden room in the Tower? Who knows how it ended up here! Maybe she knew (or felt) that Delilah was coming, capable of overpowering and taking everything from her. Maybe Jessamine was so afraid to lose her posh life that she was ready to use some kind of a black magic! 

Let her be disloyal. Obviously, she and Corvo developed some kind of codependency. But along with that, she was the Empress so who could stop her from having an affair or two? And Corvo was just the safest option, with a way less unnecessary risks and questions. 

Let her be an imperfect person. 

Obviously, Jessamine could be easily born a perfect ruler and a perfect loving woman for her chosen one and her daughter. But maybe she had to learn it the hard way. 

Maybe she changed along with Corvo. Maybe the plague was a critical point for her character, maybe those months without Corvo made her rethink a lot of things. 

And isn't it tragic, finally understanding and becoming the Empress everyone wants to see in you, just to be killed the other day, because all those changes have been seen as a weakness? Have nothing but faith in your closest one, faith that these people will be more wise than she was? 

Give her some development, give her some motion! She could easily  be a saint, static point.  But in my opinion, she deserves to be not perfect but in constant motion. Trying and learning, understanding and making mistakes. She was too young when she became the Empress, she was a part of gristolian nobility, not so kind to anyone but themselves, she literally had no prerequisites to become a good person. And yet somehow she did. 

It's always so easy to be a "saint" from the very beginning. And it's always so hard to learn how to become one.

Vegas narrows in on all the wrong parts of that sentence. “Last guy?” he demands.

“Last guy?” Pete echoes, baffled. He certainly doesn’t remember introducing Grandma to any guys. There weren’t even any guys to introduce, unless he counts that one time he and Ken pretended to be a couple to get free cake when they were on Kim’s duty or all the times Porsche got flirty-drunk. What guy?

“Oh, you know,” Grandma says with an impatient wave and a raspberry, “that nice one on the phone who took you on vacation before you quit.”

Pete and Vegas carefully don’t look at each other. Macau’s eyes swivel between them, looking increasingly baffled but too scared to ask, and Pete carefully doesn’t look at him either. He looks at Grandma, who’s mashing taro without a care in the world.

“…Ah,” Pete says. It’s the best he can manage in the circumstances.

“Right. Him,” Vegas says casually, in that strange way where he can refer to his personas like they’re their own people. His eyes dart between Pete and Grandma, biting the inside of his cheek for a flashing second before another one of his masks slips into place. “You didn’t like him?”

Grandma scrunches her nose and Pete watches more filters fall over Vegas’s eyes. “He was so…nice.”

All of Vegas’s masks crack and crash as he blinks at Grandma and her derision. Grandma scoffs.

“What’s my Pete going to do with a nice boy?” Grandma tuts and pats Vegas’s cheek. “No, you’re much better. You actually have personality.”

She nods decisively and turns back to their food preparation, oblivious to Vegas’s wet-eyed look of awe. Pete feels something inside him ease as he watches Vegas try and fail to bite back a fragile smile and a lot of teary feelings before he walks over to Macau and his camera.

“Hey—!” Macau protests as Pete stops and deletes the recording. He visibly bites back his first two (likely loud) shouts and gives Pete a look of utter frustration.

Pete smiles his Young Master Smile and shuts the camera off. “We have other recordings. This one’s just for us.”

In discussions about mental health, I am so tired of the only voices mattering being other people or other people who do not deal with a condition/disorder or a specific situation.

"Here's how I deal with loved ones with [x] condition!"

"If you do [y] because of [x mental health reason], you're selfish and everybody who loves you is having their lives made harder by you!"

"If your symptoms are [z], you're gross, and you deserve no sympathy for struggling"

I understand to an extent why people do this, but holy hell, as somebody who struggles and struggles often, the last thing any of us need to be told is that we're a burden that others have to carry. And it's terrible how everybody else's feelings but ours matter - even if we are the ones most affected by our condition or situation.

If you are dealing with issues surrounding your mental health and well-being, know that everything above isn't true; you are worthy of patience, understanding, kindness, and love. You are worthy of being listened to without judgment. You don't have to apologize or "make up" for who you are or what you struggle with.
