Luffy is the captain of the Straw Hat Pirates. Once a rookie from the East Blue, he is now a force to be reckoned with and has been dubbed the Fifth Emperor of the Sea. When Garp caught wind of Luffy’s dreams of becoming Pirate King he was not having it. He wanted Luffy to become a marine, not only because it was a good career, but because Luffy’s father was an incredibly wanted man. Luffy showing his loyalty to the government would ensure his safety.

As a form of discipline, Garp handed over Luffy to Dadan and her band of mountain bandits to toughen him up. This was where he met Ace and later Sabo, who would eventually become his older brothers.

Luffy held on to his goals and eventually sailed off to sea as a pirate at seventeen, where he would then go on to build his crew and face many trials.

JoJolion chapter 109: Grandma Lucy’s Bizarre Adventure

(Spoiler Alert! If you haven’t read it, I suggest you to read it soon)

JJL chapter 109: The Radio Gaga Incident

After The End of Tooru, we go back to a flashback 70 years ago in Morioh, 1941.

A grannie who just got off the train and arrived in Morioh, meets a chauffeur who would pick her up. The chauffeur is a jerk for refusing to bring the old lady's heavy-looking luggage… typical Morioh’s jerk in JJL.

Thanks for being a jerk, the grannie's belongings are even taken by the thief. What's the point of telling the grannie about the thief if you refuse to help her bring her luggage from the start?

Fortunately, a young Morioh boy stops the thief.

The grannie offers the boy named Fumi a part-time job to be her local guide. However, the boy refuses, saying he is supposed to meet his girlfriend. He notices her holding a photograph of an orchard (Higashikata’s orchard obviously).

Fumi tells her about 「The Radio Gaga Incident」, a place of bad luck with numerous deaths in the past. One of them was a story of woman who was messing around with her boyfriend near a guard rail, she had followed a strange voice near a guard rail and begun to strip herself. She later disappeared after a farmer's truck passes by, leaving only her clothes and a piece of her bloodied foot behind.

Turns out that this grannie is Lucy Steel all along. She told Fumi about herself and the purpose of her arrival in Morioh. She was 14 in 1891 (Steel Ball Run), so she is supposed to be around 64 years old in 1941 (JJL 109) right now. Seems like she investigates the Locacaca fruit on behalf of the Speedwagon Foundation, as botanist and geomorphologist… that’s cool, though I was originally thinking that she was a secret agent (but that still makes sense).

Fumi, Lucy, and the jerk chauffeur later arrive at Morioh's hunting grounds near the orchard owned by the Higashikata. As Lucy inspects the site and observes the Higashikata house with a telescope, Fumi finds the remains of a bird under his foot. He freaks out after the jerk chauffeur appears behind him, seemingly entranced by a voice only he can hear. He begins to strip down naked and approaches the guard rail, just like the victim girl in the local legend. Panicking, Fumi calls Lucy's attention before a truck passes on the road and the driver disappears.

Fumi inspects the remaining clothes and only finds the chauffeur’s severed hand. One of my favorite moment in JoJo when the jerk cameo gets bitten by the dust.

Fumi’s starting to get scared and tells Lucy to flee as soon as possible but she refuses, explaining that she came to Morioh after discovering that a plant named the "Locacaca" had been growing in the cursed land that was similar to the Devil's Palm in America.

JJL chapter 109 and 99

Wait a minute, if Lucy had been to Morioh 30 years ago, did the flashback of her in chapter 99 happen 30 years ago? Doesn't that mean it was in 1911 instead of 1901? I thought it had happened along with the flashback of Johnny's death (1901), if that’s the case then Lucy's arrival in Morioh 30 years ago happened 10 years after Johnny's death! And she was around 34 years old instead of 24… unless Araki forgot and messed up his timeline again.

The chapter ends with cliffhanger of Lucy’s getting attacked by 「Radio Gaga」 too.

My thought…

So, after the end of the big villain, we go back to a flashback instead of another epilogue. This chapter kinda reminds me of Vento Aureo’s Sleeping Slaves arc, in which after the defeat of the main villain, we got that flashback instead.

It’s nice to have Lucy Steel once again, here she becomes a badass grandma. My favorite part is how Araki designs Lucy in her 60s realistically, instead of being like a lady who had drunk a fountain of youth. I wished Araki would have drawn Caato and Holy more realistically like this, perhaps in his eyes 50 is not old, 60 is. Not surprised though considering how he looks too.

Not only that, if you take a look to the hat Lucy is wearing, the model is after her late husband, Stephen’s. I think it’s not limited to her hat, her fashion sense as well truly resembles Stephen’s in Steel Ball Run.

Then there is a young boy named Fumi in his 17, could he be the grandfather of Josefumi? I think so, I wish it’s true.

Since Lucy and Fumi are near Higashikata’s territory, I hope that they will get any interaction with the Higashikata family. I'm also curious about what Lucy will get from her research on Locacaca fruit.

What kind of Stand is「Radio Gaga」? Who owns it and will it relevant to the event at JJL in the future?

To be honest, I'm a little disappointed with the timeline Lucy told, about 30 years ago, which makes the event of Lucy's arrival in Morioh at that time (1911) will likely be 'unrelated' to the death of Johnny (1901). Either Araki misses the chance or is pretty bad with timeline so, that’s it.

I hope that this flashback chapter will be relevant to those unresolved mysteries that I brought up on my previous chapter review. Perhaps it would have something to do with Tooru and his calamity, but my expectation is quite low regarding this. Tooru and 「Wonder of U」 are probably gone forever.

At least I hope this mini arc will answer the most important mystery in JoJolion, the origin of Higashikata’s family curse! Araki really owes us for that, don’t you agree? Please Araki, don’t let us down!

Next chapter prediction…

The continuation of Radio Gaga arc, perhaps followed by an epilogue considering that the next chapter could be the end of JoJolion. Also, does this mean that Josuke-&-Yasuho will be official/canon?

4:Favorite Arc?

Water 7, 100% for a few reasons. I love how it starts, a clear goal for the crew, repair the Merry, and it separates into all these different subplots. Robin’s mysterious disappearance, The Merry can’t be fixed, and Usopp being kidnapped by the Franky Family. Then, the argument scene on the ship between Usopp and Luffy is still one of the saddest but most impactful scenes in One Piece to me. It’s one of the first times we really see Luffy stand up as a captain, but its also Usopp standing his ground for his love of this ship. Neither person is completely wrong. The fight is just devestatingly sad. How it ends with Luffy and the crew crying, and Zoro trying to offer support in his own way. Water 7 also never loses that momentum to me, there aren’t any slowbits to this arc that feel like nothing is moving forward, which is a big problem i had with Dressrosa. I love Franky, I love his backstory, and love everything that happens in the mansion and them trying to catch up to CP9 in Rocketman. This arc just has everything in it that makes me love One Piece

19: If you could have any devil fruit, which would it be and why?

Hmmm, tricky one. I love the devil fruits that are really weird and specific, but some of the zoan ones are really cool too. I could easily just go with Kaido’s cause its cool as hell and on-brand, but I think I would go with Katakuri’s mochi powers. Its just super versatile. And infinite mochi does sound good.

25: Any villains you like even though you know you REALLY shouldn’t?

Arlong, easily. Arlong’s my favorite villain in One Piece. I love his design a lot with the shark design, floral clothes, and erratic hair. His personality and laugh are just so vilely inhuman, but seeing how he got that way in Fishman Island gave him so much more dimension. Oda didn’t need give us an Arlong flashback that late into One Piece, but he did, and I love him for it. Everything he does in Arlong Park so effectively makes us hate him, I still love of Nami stabbing herself in the shoulder of frustration. The fight in Arlong Park is solid too. Luffy destroying the tower will always be stuck in mind. Just a really solid villain.

So, let's talk foreshadowing for chapter 956

A perhaps unnecessarily long essay on X Drake. With pictures, because after 10 years, I wanted to be extra.

As I mentioned previously, I have been waiting 10 years for this reveal. When Drake was first introduced, it was no big deal. Former Marine turned pirate/criminal. Happened/s in real life. Thought nothing of it. But when Kizaru started interacting with Drake - that's when it sent up red flags. (Do I detect a pun?)

The Initial Foreshadow

It was Drake who came across Kizaru - not wanting to. Don't blame him. Kizaru may be a goofy guy, but he is seriously dangerous - and of all of the people present, Drake would know that best as a former Marine.

It was Kizaru addressing Drake as Rear Admiral Drake, present tense, in chapter 508, that first caught my attention. It was small, perhaps a shock on Kizaru's part to see Drake; but an odd and noted statement on my part. Even if characters are "new," there are still base perceptions we should have about them. Such as, Drake is a former Marine: a former Rear Admiral, a higher rank, with what we later learn is possibly a stolen Marine ship, rebranded for his piracy. To begin with: Drake should be a high priority for treason, capture, and execution. But he wasn't, so that's sloppy - but considering Sengoku was at HQ and The Terror Themselves, the Marine Admirals, could float around on an order… that wasn’t adding up. Kizaru calling Drake Rear Admiral... it’s odd. Caught off guard. I’ll let it slide.

Next chapter, 509, Kizaru repeats his mistake - he calls Drake a Rear Admiral (pardon the scanlation error) in the present tense - and then he has to correct himself to Former Rear Admiral.

So, to recap: by this time, Drake is a highly ranked defector with a stolen ship and a reputation of brutality months to at least a year in the making in order to establish himself a reputation as a Supernova. For Kizaru to be making the mistake of referring to his rank in the present tense twice, one has to question why. Drake should be well established, well spoken of, as a former within the ranks of the military, and particularly the upper echelon who would be keeping tabs on him and his destruction because, for some reason, they’re allowing it. Kizaru then goes into an explanation and over the pages Drake is uncomfortable, seemingly because he is with still Admiral Kizaru and he wants to leave. In reality and in my interpretation, Kizaru is almost playful, taunting even, as if he and Drake are in on a joke others aren't supposed to know about. Like, “See, I came this close to saying something I shouldn't have, but I recovered at the last minute, you see? A total save.”

Kizaru proceeds with a thorough thrashing of the present pirates, because that's his job and the role Drake has accepted as an undercover agent. Because by this time, to me, it was obvious Drake was not a real defector but for some reason undercover. Kizaru couldn't blow the cover of their agent, so he kicked the asses of all present and let them all go because Drake had a job to complete. If he let just one pirate (Drake) go, it'd have been suspicious. Kizaru had to act accordingly. The Straw Hats needed apprehending also aided in this, as it gave him an excuse to leave the defeated pirates for pickup by other Marines.

Another thing of interest is Kizaru giving Drake permission to attack the Pacifista in chapter 509. In doing so, this would allow Drake to know that he has a superior’s permission to essentially damage their own weapon (because he might not inherently have wanted to), but it would also allow Marines to gauge the effectiveness of the Pacifista against an opponent with fully known abilities. It would also help Drake in gaining the ‘trust’ of the other pirates, who might become suspicious if Drake is hesitant to participate.

So, Why Drake In Particular?

Because he's a fucking dinosaur, that's why. Like Kaido of the Beasts ain't gonna want another fucking dinosaur in his ranks. Only two his besties are an herbivorous dinosaur and a pteronodon, so an actual fucking carnivorous dinosaur? Hell fucking yeah.

So, after the Battle of Marineford, when our Supernovas are heading off to the New World, Paradise, we learn Drake's intention: challenge Kaido.

How to Impress Your Local Dragon Emperor

I don't know about y'all, but when Drake attacked Scotch, to me, it didn’t seem like a challenge towards Kaido for territory or to overthrow him. As a former Marine of considerable rank, Drake shouldn’t be that stupid. He knows how to plan and attack. In other words, this was strategic and for a purpose. This was more of a knock on Kaido's door for attention and admission into the club than to piss all over his doorstep like a dog claiming territory (sort of like the beef between a certain redheaded guy with another redheaded guy). As previously established in the last several years of this series, Kaido was impressed and let him in.

Keeping Up the Facade, part 1

The real question is, does Kaido suspects anything?

As someone who has been looking forward to this; like everybody else, I've kinda grown fond of my slowly building impressions of Drake and worry for his general safety. You know, our beloved Rosinante has placed some worry in our hearts. In-story, Drake’s been undercover with Kaido for 2 years. That’s enough time to build trust, but the trust of someone with Drake’s background would be harder to keep. Either Kaido trusts blindly once you’re sworn (and proven) your allegiance, or he’s always going to have a hint of suspicion.

Speaking of Rosi: The Flashback, on Minion Island

The flashback introduction of Drake brings us the introduction of Drake's father, the Marine turned abusive pirate, Barrels. To throw a little head cannon in; honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if Barrels forced Drake to eat the devil fruit to get the power from it, in the form of someone he can control, but not have to suffer any of the actual consequences of having eaten a devil fruit. Drake was shown to be a happy kid in the SBS. Drake, by the time of the flashback, was between 19 and 20 years old - an adult - and he did not fight back against or leave his abusive father. Trigger warning for abuse victims and survivors. He was terrified of his father. He probably took that abuse for many years and was expected to take it without a whimper or cowering; think back to how he braced himself for Kizaru’s kick. He was old enough to leave, but he couldn't. Why? Because he feared his father. His father could track him down before he got away, harm him, maybe he’d even tried it before; probably told him he'd amount to nothing in the real world, especially if found out to be a pirate; and Barrels probably told Drake exactly what would happen to him if he was caught for trying to escape, or trying to escape again. Escape was useless. There would never be any escaping, so why even bother.

I, myself, have experience as an abuse survivor. I have decided not to go into it, but please know that I do recall my experiences when it comes to understanding others - even fictional characters.

To finish this section up: we all cope in different ways. Even if the story is fictional, a lot of us find familiarity in that fictional situation and know how the fictional people might turn out - just like us real people. There are some people who will become abusers, oftentimes reflecting our abuser. Some who might abuse themselves but not other people. But there are also a lot of us who will not do any kind of defiance, abuse, or harm (to ourselves or otherwise) without reason because we know what it's like to be subjected to unwarranted cruelty. End trigger warning.

If there is one thing Oda does right, it is character development. Drake “becoming like his father by abandoning the Marines to become a violent pirate” or “wanting to see the other side,” it doesn’t make much sense when you finally get to the flashback. When Dolfamingo attacked Minion Island, Drake fled for his life. He was absolutely terrified. Terrified of Doflamingo, terrified of his father. He ran right into the arms of the Marines. A young, unwitting pirate, preferred the Marines over his own father. And he felt little remorse that his father died. And unlike Kizaru’s suggestion, he doesn’t really need to “see the other side” considering, you know, he was previously a pirate. (Probably not common knowledge.)

The Marines could put 2 and 2 together. This kid they found was Barrels' son. (Had the same surname.) He was an accomplice. Under duress. Rather than punish him, he was allowed to join the Marines. Yeah, there's a possibility it could have been 'punishment' or an alternative, but it also could have been something he wanted. He honestly probably didn't have much else in life, or maybe when he was little he considered becoming a Marine like his father, and to help people, not hurt them. (He also probably later adopted the X because it carries the same value as Diez, but distances himself from his father personally and professionally; or he just adopted it for piracy.) If Drake had the violent tendencies his father had towards him, it would have been noted earlier by the Marines and probably shown in his earlier appearances. Instead, we always received a very calm, observant persona.

With his experience and skills, Drake was the perfect person to go undercover in Kaido's ranks. Maybe the Marines were curious about Kaido's growing fleet, the SMILE, or maybe there are Marine spies in all of the Emperors’ fleets. Drake just fit perfectly into Kaido's fleet.

Keeping Up the Facade, part 2

As for the “bad” things we know Drake must have done as a pirate and under Kaido. There’s no reason to disbelieve that some of it could be exaggerated, particularly early on. Quite a bit would have to be honestly earned. So going back to the abuse Drake endured. While not all abuse victims become abusers, it is still important to understand that all abuse victims compartmentalize their abuse and tend to dissociate from it. We had to endure abuse, and we all developed ways with coping with it. Not all of us will inflict pain on other people (most of us will not), but we can under certain circumstances and for specific reasons. Not from evil intent, but because we might deem the action necessary in a more clinical, observational way.

To put it in context of Drake, he endured abuse under his father. Joined the Marines. Perhaps despises pirates, or perhaps just despises certain pirates and mentalities. He has agreed to help spy on Kaido, which means adopting the persona of an abuser and a pirate. Drake has this background through knowledge of his father and personal experiences. He probably doesn’t feel good about the things he has done, has to do, and witnesses, but he can compartmentalize his feelings. He can separate his emotions from his actions. He has put up a mental wall that protects his humanity from his inhumane actions, allowing him to do things in a dissociated way while still remaining fully conscious and in control.

Which brings us to the present Wano arc. He’s fulfilling his role as a Headliner by going after the dissenters of Orochi and Kaido, such as the Alliance and the incredible Stealth Black (less incredible O-Soba Mask). But he’s also shown hints of reservation, such as his refusal to enter the bathhouse. Now, already having this perception of Drake in my mind, it worked for me. He’s not just a “shy boy,” he’s a modest boy, a decent boy. He’s playing a bad guy, he’s not actually a bad guy. Going in a bathhouse full of women in varying states of undress. Sorry, a good guy, a Marine, more than likely isn’t going to do that without feeling ashamed or embarrassed, especially if people of the opposite gender are involved.

In addition, Hawkins has hinted Drake has been behaving strangely in their capture of Law. We later learn that Drake more than likely assisted in Law’s release. Next two questions would be, what was Drake doing, and if and how much Drake told Law about his role (if Law didn’t already know about it)? There’s some speculation that Law and Drake maybe already have a familiarity: as citizens of North Blue, the fact that Drake’s father had and was looking to sell the Ope Ope fruit, while Law is currently the user/carrier of said fruit, and the fact that Drake may have served some of his time in North Blue. Or they met each other on the Grand Line. Or Law may have previously overhead/seen Drake reporting to the Marines. Really, speculation is endless. (There’s also more theorization involving Koby’s connection to Law.)

But then we have to consider the Marines. Particularly, Sakazuki and Borsalino (Akainu and Kizaru) discussing what to do with Wano.

Like, how would you know about the strength of the samurai? Where are you gonna be getting that information if not from somebody on Wano? Probably not somebody native to Wano, as whoever it is would have to have connections to the Marines. That person would had to have fled Wano, joined the Marines, gained a reputation as a trustworthy Marine, only to sneak back into Wano, and gain another reputation as a trustworthy follower of Kaido or Orochi in order to become useful as a spy, when a Wano defector probably wouldn’t be re-accepted. I mean, there could be an easier way.

In all seriousness, it is interesting that the Marines seem to have an interest in intervening on Wano. Either to pull Drake out or to actually overthrow Kaido.

The next question would be whether Oda was just being cryptic in his delivery of the conversation between Sakazuki and Borsalino for the sake of keeping the Drake reveal private to us, or if the Marines themselves are suspicious that someone is eavesdropping on them or has ulterior motives?

Perhaps CP0? The World Government?

Of course, it could be an open secret for the upper echelon of the Marines and Sakazuki is actually just waiting for intel before blowing Drake’s cover (which could get him killed - not what you want to do to your spy). We’ll just have to watch how things play out.

Hey ya’ll! First entry on my ”revived” Tumblr blog is of course about One Piece. Just a quick background, I’m a One Piece fan since of young age (currently 24) and it has been my #1 Manga/Anime ever since. Most posts you’ll be seeing here will probably be about One Piece (+ other Manga/Anime I’m currently reading/watching, I’ve read/watched, Will read/watch +random thoughts +random creative writing of mine. Yo! For the 20th Anniversary of my favorite Manga/Anime, I've decided to create a list of the 20 Things I Love About One Piece

Of course, it is not in particular order and incomplete 'cause meeeeen words won't be enough to describe how much I (and we) love One Piece hahahaha

Sooooo... let us begin!

20. Art

I like the art of One Piece. The color balance and the style of Oda-sama doesn't hurt my eyes. This is one of the first things I look at in a manga I'll read or an anime I'll watch. If I don't like the art, I usually don't continue reading or watching it.

19. Storyline

Nuff said. The image says it all. I really salute Oda-sama's imagination. There's never been a dull moment in One Piece in my opinion (no bias). The story really progresses and continues in depth.

18. Action

What else are you looking for in a shonen manga/anime but action. Those awesome fight scenes and power upgrades. The different devil fruits maaaaaan what more can I say? Marines vs. Pirates fighting for glory satisfies me.

17. Drama

Aside from all the action and fighting, of course there's a reason behind them (those fights). The backstories and flashbacks bring tears to my eyes. (T_T)

16. Humor

This completes and balances the emotions. Who doesn't care for a good laugh aye?

15. History

I love how Oda-sama actually uses real pirates' names and real places for the characters and their backstories. There's research and context behind the characters and the story as a whole. History is incorporated and I like that. We like that, don't we?

14. Plot Twists

Everybody loves plot twists! Damn all those mysteries. These things give you the "ugh", "wtf", "da hell" kinds of emotions. And I can't get enough of all the plot twists One Piece offered and is yet to offer.

One of the best plot twists: SABO IS ALIVE MEN I KNEW IT!!!

13. Government

This really affects me. My friends asked me before why I like One Piece and I answered "It's because of the government vs. rebels kind of thing, the core that the gov't hides, and the heroes mistaken as foes, people's justice that is injusticed". And they tell me "WTF, you dig that deep? meanwhile me, just looking after the fight scenes". Maybe I'm a deep person or because this is what really happens in reality 'elite vs. masses' LOL

12. Marines

I'm a girl but I'm a reservist in the army and ever since I've been a fan of military shizz. That is why I love the concept of the Marines and the ranks ooooh I love talking about ranks and even memorizing their insignias LOL

11. Cool antagonists

I have a love-hate relationship with all of One Piece's antagonists. What can I say? Doffy is cool. I hate Akainu but I think he is cool no he's not cool I take it back 'cause he's magma baby MAGMA FREAKING HOT MAGMA LOL and even if I reallyyyy hate Teach he's still cool with the way he talked to Luffy 'bout pirates' dreams.

10. Cool protagonists

What more can I say? Where can you ever find a protagonist whose power is rubber? What a foolish powerless character righttttttt *wink wink*

09. Awesome characters

All in all everyone's just awesome (well there are some 'ewww' characters like Wapol tho XD). I just don't know anymore. I really bow down to Oda-sama's imagination. Every character has an identity and a unique one at that. The different races. Amazing. All those different species too, men.

08. Nakama

True friends. True loyalty. True respect. Will never let you down. Will never leave you behind. Will always be there for you. Hands down.

07. Generation, Family, and Bloodlines

Man, how amazed I am thinking about Rayleigh-Luffy, Mihawk-Zoro, Zeff-Sanji, Yasopp-Usopp, Hiluluk-Chopper, Tom-Franky, Belmere-Nami, Olvia-Robin... Brook? Laboon-Brook... ugh The Donquixote family, now the Vinsmokes family and the Charlotte family?!!

“Being a pirate is all about going your own way.” // “Come with me, Buggy!!”

is this post totally redundant after the similar post i made last week? idk. i guess the main difference is that this time i’m looking at the same topic in an unambiguously romantic light? the shipper goggles, as they say, are on, and i want to talk about these scenes in that context. so, if you’ll forgive me for repeating myself a bit, let’s talk about this again:

as much as i enjoy the heartbreak of “they always thought they’d be together but miscommunication tore them apart” takes on shanks/buggy, the very first flashback we get about them—the first things we learn about them at all, really—tells us this isn’t true.

and i think what we get is more romantic.

Chapter 19, Pages 12-13. i know last time i said they’re at most 12 here, but looking at these lanky-ass teenaged designs that’s nuts. i fully believe oda hadn’t thought through their ages/the timeline at this point, and they were originally supposed to be about luffy’s age when buggy got his devil fruit. which is not relevant to this post in any way, but it’s my post so i get to go off-topic if i want.

Shanks and Buggy have their own goals as pirates, and at this time they understand them to be mutually incompatible. Buggy thinks Shanks’ travel-and-adventure-oriented take on piracy is soft and foolish; Shanks doesn’t care for Buggy’s exclusively treasure-focused take. They’re sometimes friendly, sometimes not, they’ve fought side by side, but they know this time as allies and crewmates is temporary. (Buggy plans on taking his treasure map and the Devil Fruit and leaving the crew immediately.) Maybe they’ll become friendly rivals, ‘fighting to the finish’ when they run into each other like Roger and Whitebeard do, or maybe the next time they see each other they’ll literally fight to the finish. Who knows?

“That’s also what being a pirate is all about.” It’s very sensible behavior. Smart planning for the future.

Which means the contradictory ways they act later—Buggy secretly deciding to follow Shanks, Shanks bluntly asking Buggy to come with him—are not about these characters thoughtlessly clinging to the status quo. They are not in a “we were always together and I never thought that would change” situation. Deciding to stick together is a considered, emotional decision: “I know we don’t make sense together but I don’t care, I want us together anyway.”

Chapter 1082, Pages 8-9. i was cursed the moment i saw these pages with Unable To Stop Thinking About It disease; only time will tell if seeing it animated makes it worse or cures me.

This argument is a codependent breaking point. Buggy’s pinned all his dreams on Shanks, hoisted that poor boy up on a pedestal, and it all falls apart when Shanks reveals thoughts and plans that don’t match Buggy’s perception of him. He can’t bear to be around him now that the false image has been revealed. (Shanks, poor thing, seems to have had no idea any of this was happening.)

But if Shanks hadn’t said no to Laugh Tale in this moment—or maybe if he’d offered a soft no of, idk, “okay, sure, once we’ve got a strong enough crew”—Buggy would have gone with him, still projecting wildly onto Shanks. He’d convinced himself that being a member of the Pirate King’s crew was enough for him, that he didn’t need to be Pirate King himself if Shanks got the title and he was with Shanks.

…but would he have actually liked being a member of that crew?

Like, looking at the things the Red-Haired Pirates do, would Buggy have enjoyed being one of them? Wandering East Blue, hanging out in friendly port towns, collecting treasure here and there but spending a lot of time getting drunk and making friends with the locals? Eventually becoming famous for having a large, weak fleet of subordinate pirate crews Shanks has to sometimes physically step in and protect?

God, no, he’d’ve been miserable. Just seething with thwarted ambition, furious at the perceived disrespect. A real power hungry first officer stereotype, the kind of character that makes you think, Why’s he working for this guy if he hates him so much?

And Buggy must have suspected it would go something like that. But if Shanks hadn’t rejected Laugh Tale, he would’ve gone with him anyway.

(Better to be miserable with you than a loser on my own.)

Or say Buggy agreed to come with Shanks. Obviously his presence wouldn’t change the crew makeup significantly enough to skew the Red-Haired Pirates towards his way of thinking, but for the sake of argument: if he had convinced Shanks to do things his way, would Shanks have enjoyed the kind of piracy Buggy engages in? Taking over and destroying East Blue port towns, ordering your crew killed on a furious whim, single-mindedly hunting down treasure maps and single-mindedly hunting down treasure chests and paying no attention to anything along the journey? Eventually becoming the boss and administrator for a bunch of bounty hunters and mercenaries?

No way; most of that behavior is totally repellant to Shanks. If he let Buggy do that kind of thing under his banner, you’d be left wondering What happened to his morals? Why does he let this guy walk all over him?

And Shanks knew the kind of pirate Buggy was and wanted to be. But he asked Buggy to come with him anyway.

(Better to be miserable with you than have fun apart.)

It’s hard to see a way to make these very different styles of pirating work together. It’s probably doable… with a lot of compromise and honest conversation. The younger Shanks and Buggy had a point, when they said each going their own way was the obvious choice! It was certainly the easier one. Was it the happier one? Who can say.

Chapter 19: Devil Fruit

Compared to Luffy, Buggy is a WAP- Weak-Ass Pirate. Luffy’s got him grounded and is punishing him for both ruining his hat and talking mess about his idol Shanks. Buggy’s Chop-Chop powers should be able to get him out, right?

Not when Luffy’s so thoroughly keeping him grounded. Buggy’s crew, still pretending to be unconscious, are worried he’s actually losing. Nami’s been distracted from stealing all the treasure by the fight, but she’s back on task now. Meanwhile, a scene transition!

In the camp where the citizens of Orange Town have been hiding after Buggy moved in, they’re worried about good ol’ mayor Boodle. He’s been gone a while and the cannons have been going off... This townsfolk, Poro, is determined to check up on what’s happened. The guy behind his shoulder in this panel is suitably shocked by this decision. Still, the rest of the citizens all join him. Orange Town’s people are making a stand and saving their mayor!

Back at the fight, wer’e not actually staying back at the fight, because it’s time for a flashback. Side note, I wonder what the Japanese term that got translated here to ‘scalawag’ was... That’s a very specific sort of insult. Anyway, time for young Shanks and Buggy!

Young Shanks, before he got those eye scars... and also lost that arm. The two pirates were constantly at each other’s throats, in part because of their different outlooks on piracy. Buggy seems to have not changed since then in that he’s very greedy and material, but Shanks has a more romantic and fun view of pirates, again fitting in with his actions in the first chapter. As their crew leaps into action and boards an enemy ship, Buggy makes a discovery.

He hides the map, planning to become extremely rich by himself. This is in the past before the One Piece existed, so who knows how comparable this horde would have been? Either way, as the crew parties after the successful venture, Buggy plans to leave with the map. Shanks comes in and informs him that they found some rare loot: a Devil Fruit.

This is a bit more lore about Devil Fruit- it’s not much, but it’s still early days. We haven’t seen how Luffy fares in the water yet, but ‘the seas turning against him’ sounds like a bad time. Buggy’s not going to eat the fruit, because he has that map to sunked treasure, but then Shanks tells him that Devil Fruit are valuable enough that people would pay 100 million berries for one. Buggy hatches a plan, to double dip by both taking the fruit and selling it then finding the sunken treasure. He swaps in a fake fruit and theatrically eats it in front of the crew, pretending it had no effect.

Shanks shows up behind him as he gloats over the fruit and map, so he... hides it in his mouth. Real unusual face going on here, and the clown nose doesn’t help his case. Shanks leaves but then doubles back, surprising Buggy into swallowing the fruit. In his panic of losing out on 100 million berries, he then drops his map off the ship then dives overboard to retrieve it. It’s only been four pages since we established eating a Devil Fruit means swimming’s a no-no, but Buggy’s panicking. After he begins to drown, Shanks leaps in to save him!

Luffy ignores all the parts of the story about Buggy’s selfishness because they’re not important, and is relieved that Shanks saved Buggy’s life. Buggy’s been a clown his whole life... He declares he’s going to use his powers to take all the treasure on the seas, then launches his top half at Nami!

Yes, he spotted her making off with his loot. Nami’s competent with her stick, but that’s probably not enough to fight a Devil Fruit user. Luffy, kick his abandoned legs inna nerts to distract him!
