The thing is that yes, 13 herself is good, but the show as a whole just wasn't great during her run. Something something there's a baby in this dumpster

yeah like i recognise that most ppl just disliked the show even if they liked her but that's like... almost worse to me? coz i rly love her seasons like i hate the big twist as do most ppl but like it's literally doctor who i'm used to bad decisions. but like the episodes themselves are fine? good even?? i mean there's some i think suck ass like rosa or kerblam but a lot of them are like really good??? and it literally just. makes me really sad that ppl put up with 6 seasons of moffat but literally immediately gave up on 13. like it was actually fucking insane to watch how hyped everyone (EVEN non dw fans) was about her turning into a woman and then the fandom just. disappeared. like idk obviously i cant fault anyone for liking/disliking whatever they want but it makes me so fucking sad.. i like her & her era so much and it seems like 99% of people are only willing to acknowledge it even exists when they wanna make a gender joke abt tennant or when it'd look weird to not include 13 so they include her even tho they know nothing about her or completely misinterpret her as a silly goofy friendly #girlie coz people are chronically incapable of engaging w text if it's a woman

1 - 03/10/2023 : another of my faves of last year, was trying to get better at drawing trainz, so just Edward and Toby hanging out, displaying the duality of old men x

2 - 04/10/2023 : got a new puter! one of the first things i set to doing after getting set up was to draw a Ru, of course, it was also just me trying to get used to the new MS paint..... it feels very odd

3, 4, 5 - 06/10/2023 : part 1 of redrawing random pics i have of Edward on my phone with my human version of him, this was really fun tbh, and the third here is one of my fave drawings of the year probs.. like sir.. those look heavy... what big uhh.. Glasses.. you have

6, 7, 8 - 07/10/2023 : part 2! i think i just like drawing his face... dare i say this train is cunty or will that get me exiled

9 - 08/10/2023 : something stupid i thought of and couldn't get out of my head for days so had to draw it..... little johnny from oingo boingo's only a lad, doing what he does best, fantasising about radios he wants oh so bad and running people down with a boyish craving for blood.. based on that 1 meme of the guy driving and thinking of a thing then making that insane face

10 - 09/10/2023 : based on that 1 silly vargskelethor song (that could not be less specific), had Shed 17 on the brain and was reminded of the milk song where the skeleton comes out.. thomarse dank 2 much milk and died..

11, 12 - 10/10/2023 : chooshada again :333 first a little doodle on my phone bc i was wondering about her livery, i do think she'd have originally been NER apple green but then painted NWR colours, butttt with a twist... coz i can do whatever i like... the twist is just that she's painted dark blue rather than a sky blue, coz its more her colour x

ALSO MS paint shada, wanted to draw her more uh, idk, detailed ig, idk i love this one, it also served as more train practice

13 - 13/10/2023 : previous one, but with COLOUR!! not much 2 say other than that shes very cute

14 - 18/10/2023 : saw a tweet abt old photos of engine crews posing with their crashed locos and how the NWR crews would do that, made me think of how, if Toni was (choo)shada's driver, she'd do that.. probably x .. very like her to slay in the midst of a terrible accident

15 - 22/10/2023 : predictably, i have some playlists for the ttte engines, one for Diesel which is notable here, so uhh, i have the scrapped song from the lorax "biggering" in there, bc i see it as like a Duck vs Diesel song, ik im surpassing several layers of cringe here but hear me out ok... i drew this at 2am coz i couldn't stop thinking of Duck lecturing Diesel

16, 17, 18 - 25/10/2023 : speaking of playlists, think i was listening to my Robin one here, and felt like drawing him, i have "the land of make believe" in there, which ive always found to be an oddly haunting song, so this is semi based on that, though that wouldn't be apparent if i hadn't just told u x .. this looks like vent art but tis not i was just having fun

also tiny chooshada, i was in the middle of writing something which i have literally Just remembered now and i was writing a scene where Ru is stuck between some characters who shes not looking forward to working with bc they're about to bicker the whole fuckin time and one of them thinks shes a dick, so i drew her being sad that shes forced to work with morons..... and speak of the devil, 3rd drawing is here with 2 of the aforementioned morons :D i think D+D take a liking to her, they're just a little obnoxious (love them for that)

19 - 27/10/2023 : a quick(ish) digital thing of Chooshada again that i did on the side of another project, more engine drawing practice he he, she'll be out of proportion and lacking detail but really it was just to not be too hard on myself about that, it did help i think to understand how to draw her more, plus just look at her lil face... also she has a number here, doesn't mean much other than 8 being her lucky number, other than 11, like those are just her numbers, suppose i could have it be 1188 to ref her bday, idfk x

23 since 2016 lmao,, i don't remember exactly how many i posted on lj from 2012-2015 but it wasn't a ton, probably 10-15 that were like 50k altogether

it's been all over the place since 2020 lol but p much only chinese media like danmei novels, movies, cdramas. used to write kpop rpf but prob won't return to that even tho i still like and follow many groups

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

uhh i feel like the only thing i wrote that is complete and has an angsty ending is 捡一个梦; reach for a dream bc it was a missing scene from an angsty arc of the show. or lol jk same scenario applies to 余光 (remnants of light) bc it takes place before the end of yuwu and not in one of the happier moments

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

either 给你给你 or 换一世身份姓名; heaven to myself bc they're both disgustingly sweet and affectionate at the end

8. Do you get hate on fics?

nope! either i am writing for tiny ass fandoms or like, my fics don't get enough traction to attract haters LMAO

9. Do you write smut?

not a lot... the incomplete bingqiu au i posted has the most explicit scenes so far but i am still too shy writing it. i have to practice so that i can write more than 3 sentences of sex in a single day and actually finish the wips i started 😭

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you have written?

i have before! nothing crazy tho bc it was just kpop rpf and it would be like, two idols from the same company that have interacted multiple times! lmao. sometimes i think abt crossovers for cdramas that are relatively tame such as: two actors that have been in the same drama multiple times are reincaranted and those 2+ dramas are their different lives... but it's so niche in eng speaking fandom and i haven't fully written one out yet. also does it count as a crossover if u put characters from story A into the setting/setup for story B bc i do that a lot but i think that is fairly common at least for ppl to imagine

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

i don't think so... again, my fics do not get a lot of traction so i don't think it's likely lmaooo

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

i think there was an exo one translated into russian a long time ago but i don't even remember which one lolllll it might have been on my livejournal

not a whole fic yet but ive brainrotted a plethora of aus with friends before such as but not limited to mingqian actors au with lianzi (very intricate with multiple variations) and a Bunch of cdrama and yuwu stuff with another friend :')

i cannotttttt pick only one but ummm in the last yr-ish it's been a rotation of tantai jin/li susu + mingye/sang jiu from cyjm, mingqian from liu yao, xilian from yuwu (🤪)..... bingqiu from sv (always).... i should stop for now that's Tew Many. but i think once i finish spl, changgu will also be up there

15. What is a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

i feel like i'm cursing myself by typing this out but perhaps the bingqiu i posted one chapter of..... even if i could write all the p With p parts that i wanted to include, i was also a little stuck on the ending and idk if i would be able to write it in a way that doesn't feel like a cop out or just weak in general 😢 but i do like that au and i think my writing for it so far was p decent... so who knows...!

16. What are your writing strengths?

i think i am pretty good at dialogue that sounds 1. natural and 2. true to the characters! i try really hard to make imagery sound original(ish) and evocative, and to make a character's Yearning palpable

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

intricate plot, action, sex (takes me forever to write and haven't done it in as much detail as i would like to tbh)

18. Thoughts of writing dialogue in another language in fics?

i love it! i did it a little in my yunfei fic and instead of directly translating the line of chinese right there i just included the meaning in the next line of dialogue, like "what do you mean [thing they just said]" + i did it like that bc the tone of it just felt so much more natural to me in mandarin for that specific convo. not that it was something untranslatable (it wasn't) but it just felt comfier to me. i also like the thing ppl do where you can hover over the text and it will show the translation but idk how that html works HAHA someday i would like to give it a go

19. First fandom you wrote for?

20. Favorite fic you have written?

overall i think it would be typhoon season (my incomplete but not abandoned cisswap girls ximang in hk) ! i had it fermenting in my brain for like 8 months before i wrote it, which meant i had figured a lot of the stuff for the beginning out and it was much easier to write than normal since i was not deliberating so much in the moment. i think the pacing for it was good and the reveals of backstory were placed well, and i think i adapted the characters well too even if it's only a first chapter and they haven't done a lot yet. i wanna write them again but it's been rly hard for me to think abt that specific au for many months lol. i also think my recent yzy gegedidi fic had a lot of yummy scenes even if i see some flaws in some parts of the fic's progression... but i spent enough time on it already so i will not go and fix it anymore 😌 peace

i guess if it's arg x simpbur/jared, or a dsmp!bur x a non!dsmpbur would be different, but ships like l'manbur x pogtopiabur or whatever is . i mean? /genq /nm /npa (if you don't know the tone tags, genuine question, not mad and non-passive aggressive)

i dunno it’s kinda complicated tbh bc I know Pog n Lman is sillyyy bc they’re like …. The same person a few months apart, like story wise I KNOW this, and I didn’t ship them originally, but I kept making AUs and kept separating them from canon and changing their designs to the point where they look like different people so…. In my head they became different people..? Plus having friends that also do AUs added another layer of separation.

When I draw or talk abt them, I’m heavily ignoring lore. They’re like…. Different universe versions put into one place. In my head they’re the same as Phantombur/Ghostbur or arg n simp? In my head Pogbur’s just a rebel he wasn’t actually president and Lmanbur is a lot more strict of a leader, things like that. (I’m still capable of ignoring bursonas and talking abt the lore correctly tho..! I just prefer sonas at this point)

But I also never cared or had a problem w/ self ships, it might b because I joined tumblr at 13, but they truly don’t surprise nor bother me akdndksk I don’t view them as inherently problematic /gen (tho I never rly shipped anything) this is why I avoid saying sootcest and encourage others not to call it that bc it is NOT incest n I don’t support that ☝️ not a pro shipper ☝️😭

I guess my reasoning is I just enjoyed their dynamic a lot, they do act OOC often due to all of this. I guess that’s what it is, I just fell in love with the little niche community, we were separate from everything, we have our own lore and designs n ideas n stuff, bc for MONTHS I did not ship it and constantly said so. I was actually actively worried when I did start to wonder abt lpog n wanted to draw them aksnsjs

Of course I don’t ship alllll sootbur pairings tho….. I just like lpog and the ghosts, anything else I draw is either for memes or requests 👍

atm it's Hunter x Hunter with wips in Over the Garden Wall, Futurama, and Lord of the Rings. I got my start writing Twilight fanfic on fanfiction.net and occasionally write for Star Wars when the mood is right. There are past fandoms, but I don't feel like naming them all.

4. Top 5 fics by kudos:

Okay, there is a problem. Two of my fics that are in my top 5 are also like ptsd for me from a bad fandom, so I am leaving them off this list despite their high kudo count. Right now I have them viewable only to AO3 users and you can't comment on them bc I just don't want to be reminded of them, but also am not strong enough to take them down. 5. Do you respond to comments?

I try to unless the comment is kinda unhinged. I once had a really nice comment that switched gears midway thru to start in on a campaign to save the show my fic was based on getting nasty abt the network that canceled it and it just went off the rails, so in my head I was like thank u for that nice beginning but I'm just gonna walk slowly backwards away from this.

6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Even my saddest fics have some sort of silver lining. I don't like leaving my characters suffering w/o any hope. So probably the AU I wrote to my own otgw canon where I kill Beatrice off (Not) A Happy Story is the angstiest, but there's some hope by the end.

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

idk I'm kind of partial to the ending of my iasip fic My Fair Charlie bc these are two characters who have been thru a lot in their lives and the scene in Charlie's room where he shows Dee his memory box is just sorta cute and innocent and gives me feelings.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

In the fandom that shall not be named, I got some. I never got any hate when I originally wrote for Twilight on ff.net but when I updated my fic from there to AO3 I got some.

9. Do you write smut?

Not really no. A handful of times and it's just sorta okay. I'm more of a write an intense lead-up and then fade to black writer. I'll leave the smut to ppl who can actually write it well (ie not me).

Yes! It was so weird. There was another Twilight fic that I was writing that I had let sit for a few years and then someone messaged me that it had been stolen, the names changed and put on some anime fanfic website. The person knew bc the name Jasper kept popping up in that person's fic when there was no character named Jasper. They thought that was weird so they googled a portion of the fic and mine came up. Anways, I messaged the site, but who knows if they did anything abt it and anyway, I took that particular fic down since I'm not in the fandom anymore and won't ever finish it.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

My Twilight fic 'Change Heartache Into Courage' has been translated a few times.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? No. I'm a lone wolf.

14. What's your all time favorite ship?

I mean it changes all the time, but I suppose if you want to know the couple that has the highest word count from me since this is a fanfic meme then that would be Wirt and Beatrice.

15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you will?

I have a 38k 'Dragon Prince' fic that's been sitting since 2021. I'm not in the fandom anymore and got rid of Netflix, so even if I wanted to write my ability to watch the show is hindered. Still, I like the character development I wrote and maybe one day in the future I'll work on it again, but as of now, it's probably going to sit collecting dust for a v long time.

16. What are your writing strengths?

Long inner monologues and flirty, fluffy banter

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Action, smut, and moving plot forward. I just want these characters to talk, not actually get anything done.

Created a gender-swapped Aladdin AU when I was 13. Wrote 'Hey Arnold' fic in a HA forum in my teens. Posted my first "official" fanfic (Twilight) to livejournal when I was 28 then moved it over the ff.net midway thru the year and a half it took me to write it.

20. Favorite fic you've ever written?

A Perfect Sonnet bc even tho it's like 8 fics deep into my iylpp universe, I worked really hard to world-build and make it more high fantasy than fluffy slice-of-life stuff like I usually did for them. I'm not sure if I succeeded but I am proud of the effort I made.

13. What do they want to do afterwards? - but do they get a happy ending?

Poor guy was kinda forced to take the role of the leader by ppl present in the end of Tartarus so. That's what he did sjdjjdjffj He ended up working w/ Clarke to create at least somewhat democratic government (which is a challenge bc of what Halcyon population is like...) but hey, he somewhat succeeded in the end, good for him 👍

I'd say he does get a happy ending especially considering how he actually manages to save the Hope (and ofc especially his wife who's there <3) and get rid of the Board to make citizens' life better :')

(this whole thing is a work in progress but. i'm working on it!!! hehe)

As a person w/ a career that's a mix of lab & office work, his shoulders aren't really doing well which is why he has a stretching routine that he does every day. Or at least, that would be the goal. In reality he forgets it all the time and sometimes suddenly remembers abt it and...well...might end up doing it instead of like...going to sleep.

He loves oversized clothes so much <3 He had a collection of oversized sweaters back on Earth. Problem is, Halcyon doesn't have any :( Oh well, there's some of them lost in the Hope's storage, waiting for their day.

He can't fall asleep if there's not enough pillows in the bed. So until he managed to like...find some more pillows to add in the Captain's quarters he ended up just falling asleep on the couches in the kitchen. Because apparently that's somehow more comfortable.

general / casual (regular everyday peeing behavior lol)

1. What’s their preferred place to pee? (bathroom, outside, container…etc.)

In his own quarters of course, he will pee outside if he has to but he won’t enjoy it, he prefers somewhere were he can be absolutely alone or with someone he trusts

2. Do they prefer to pee standing up or sitting / squatting? At home or in public?

Just standing at home but I do like the thought of him sometimes sitting or squatting is his legs go weak

3. Can they aim well (or at all)? Which hand do they use? Both? None?

this is a fun question cause I haven’t really thought abt it but i think it’s cute if he never really had to aim when living underground cause him and m0hg would just go in like a corner somewhere so when he finally has his own place in the capital he find aiming a bit hard and ends up getting pee on the floor and he’s really embarrassed by this because he thinks it makes him seem beastly so he trains himself very hard to aim right

4. Are they vocal or quiet? Do they get chatty if there are people around?

he tries his best to be very quiet but the occasional moan or gasp slips out

5. Do they have any unusual bathroom habits? (whistling, leaning against the wall, pants all the way down when standing, looking at memes on their phone, etc.)

he closes his eyes cause he doesn’t like looking at it, if he’s with someone he trusts he likes being around them and maybe holding their hand or wrapping his tail around them just to feel them

6. Do they take their time or do they try to get done as quickly as possible?

as quickly as possible, but he pees a lot

7. Are they pee-shy? Do they get embarrassed? If yes, in what situation and by what? (the sight? the noise? people knowing they have bodily functions?) In front of whom?

he is very pee-shy, and will lock up easily

he needs to be alone or with someone he really trusts

he won’t use a public toilet if he can help it, if by some miracle he does and is able to go he will make himself look as small and hidden as possible, he does not want to attract attention, but it’s hard for him to not to

he only likes using his own private bathrooms, he will only try another toilet if it is an absolute emergency

he would never

he would never admit it but he would go in the shower if the situation was right and he really had to go, the warm water relaxes him, he would never do so if bathing with someone else however (at least not on purpose >:))

13. Have they ever locked someone out of a bathroom / kept them from going?

no, i can’t see him doing that at least not on purpose

14. Have they ever peed in the opposite gender bathroom? (if applicable)

once again not something i can see him doing

15. Are they okay with or used to peeing outside? Do they do it often?

he has to do it often but he doesn’t enjoy it, makes him feel too exposed

desperation / wetting (yk, the actual omo stuff)

he keeps it to himself for the longest time, only telling people when it’s an absolute emergency, unless he trusts you he’s very discreet about it

Get’s quieter, more anxious and touchy, tail jerks around, a certain t4rnished can sense it more than anyone else

only admits it if it’s someone he especially trusts

he gets quieter with high anxiety

he get’s very bad second hand embarrassment and get’s worried for them, if they’re someone he likes he will try to whisk you away, not wanting you to disgrace yourself

21. How do they like to be treated when they have to go? Do they want comfort / encouragement / coddling? Are they okay with light-hearted teasing or jokes?

it makes him very anxious so it’s appreciative if you stay calm to help keep him calm, a lot of coddling might make it worse but he appreciates small things like hand holding or back rubs

22. The same as the three questions above but with accidents (bedwetting too).

1. he will freeze up if he has an accident, he will glue himself to one place and shut his eyes, tries to pretend that it isn’t happening, if he has an accident in front of someone he really does not want to have an accident in front of he will shut himself in his quarters and try to avoid them for the next week or so

2. How do they act when someone else has an accident/wets the bed in their vicinity? Do they try to help them? Are they successful or do they accidentally make it worse?

once again he gets that second hand embarrassment, but if they’re upset he’ll be understand and comfort them if it’s someone he’s close with, he understands how taxing accidents can be, if they’re uncaring he might be a little upset for them because why aren’t they upset about it?

3. How do they like to be treated when they have an accident/wake up wet? Do they want comfort / encouragement / coddling? Are they okay with light-hearted teasing or jokes?

any kind of alcohol so he doesn’t drink often unless he’s in some kind of event where he’s expected to

He would only have an accident if he was sick or injured, if we were injured he’s probably be anxious about asking for help which might add to the possibility of him going to sleep full and wetting himself

not really accident prone but he still had some anxiety about peeing even as a young age (although it got worse when he made the move above ground) him and m0hg would work together to set aside secret areas underground they could use to relieve themselves where no one would find them

one of my oldest headcanons ever is def gecko-handed mekeke, cause he has to stick to ceilings somehow if he wants to control his puppet from above. sorry i dont like making guys float for no reason.... i think hes def a bit quirky design wise in my au, has some brown markings that he just got as he grew up (thing that happens with keronians sometimes in general tee bee eh) and i call him oxidized because of that. also he has four arms for some reason. i dont really know what his deal is. its not even just his design he wasnt raised by keronians and might act a bit silly cause of it.

salice: yes, actually, she has plenty of tattoos! this is something i've added onto her recently alongside the ones i've drawn on her since forever. she has a cross of lietuvēns on her right bicep and on her arms and the nape of her neck she is full of croatian cultural tattoos her grandma inked on her when she turned 13. these tattoos culturally were practiced since centuries by croatian women on croatian women and though the meaning varied by century, generally they're meant to represent community and a strong bond with family.

connie: she has a tattoo on her left bicep that simply spells out "daisy" in a fancy serif font and a realistic but simplified daisy illustration right beside it. there is no fancy reason behind this one the lore reason is that she legit did it for shits n giggles... she liked the name daisy and ran with it and loves messing with people who assume it's an ex's name LOL

salice: shes italian so you know shes biased for italian foods.... though knowing the way she is she will probably eat about anything, salice isn't picky at all with food but she probs is a big fan of stuffed and roasted bell peppers with the meat filling being also in part made with amaretti... she loves a good ol' spaghetti dish often and salaciously... she doesn't love sweets so she mostly enjoys savory foods. i can imagine she'd be a big fan of indian cuisine though which is funny because her parents NEVER cooked spicy food for her but she just got used to trying new things once she moved to the UK to study

probably a more "bizarre" thing she enjoys is frattaglie which is basically animal organs cooked a certain way. now that i think abt it she probably LOVES beef liver lightly dusted in flour and fried up with some white wine

connie: another trash compactor made human being who will eat even the sloppiest shit as long as it's warm. and this may be a stereotype but she just likes hot dogs in all shapes and forms. need 2 tell this story again bc i'm pretentious abt it.

so. 7th grade. that's when you're twelve. my class teacher is coincidentally also my trombone teacher. he teaches english. he inserts a lesson on musical intrument's names. he asks the class for the word "basson". we are german. the german word for "bassoon" is "fagott". i hope you see where i am going. so one kid in the back goes "FAGGOT" (the kid btw is gay. and trans. not that we knew that @ the time but HE surely did. anyways) teacher scolds him. we move on. only thing sticking to the insides of my head? faggot = bad word. like "shit" or "fuck". the fact that we had a swear jar that year in class did not help.

fast forward 2 years. january 2019. i am 13 years old. i follow "band camp memes" on instagram and "marching band memes", because i play in what is the german equivalent of a "marching band". some admin post an "ask me anything" sticker. i ask:

"did you know that 'bassoon' was 'fagott' in german?"

he answers along the lines of: "i'm gay and faggot is a slur so fuck yourself and i will block you" i feel so ashamed, i block his account instead.

fast forward another 2 years: i'm queer.

yeah i like gossip girl! i was at the height of that when i was 13 but its a nostalgic show for me. its not a show that i think too much abt ig. mostly i just quote it all the time w my sister. i have a gossip girl character as my icon now bc i like having matching icons w my sister! we like to switch through fictional friendships/sibling dynamics.

i also LOVE the office and also all sitcoms of that nature (i love parks and rec, superstore, new girl, etc. i love funny shows that focus on sentimental relationships that end up making me ugly cry. i think the office might be my fav but tbh i thought that abt superstore AND new girl before so idk if i even have a fav).

spy x family is a new anime im into these days! its found family and very cute!

and show w big eyes... im not sure which one u mean hhh. i like a lot of anime, my favs being ga (ofc), jibaku shounen hanako-kun, and fruits basket. im also really into the webtoon hooky, which is abt witches.

anyway mikan time:

ONE OF MY FAV CHARACTERS OF ALL TIME. i talk abt natsume all the time so it might feel like hes my all time fav, but he and mikan actually share that place in my heart.

yes similarly i also felt she was annoying when i first watched the anime (i was twelve when i first got into it). at such a young age i had a tendency to get irritated with the female mcs in media (internalized misogyny, etc) and mikan was 1. loud 2. bold 3. stupid, which are naturally unforgivable traits for a character to have (sarcasm). when i rewatched/reread at 14 i realized that i was looking at her all wrong. around the time i started observing the ga tumblr fandom around age 15 (i only recently started being active in the ga fandom bc i was too nervous before), there was a pervasive idea that mikan was a mary sue.

UGH so let me go off real quick. i will talk way more abt mikan in my next nm essay, but ill summarize some of my ideas briefly for this. mikan’s arc is all about feeling useful, having agency, and how best to help others. she is maybe one of the few characters who undergoes OVERWHELMINGLY negative character development. i dont mean she was flanderized or ruined, i mean that this little girl started developing the idea that she should smile all the time and hide all her negative feelings in order to make OTHERS feel better. this is not good! but its treated like its good, like thats the best choice she can make (this is the actual reason that i only ship her romantically w natsume actually, but ill go into that in my essay). it can be fun for a character to devolve, to make the wrong choice, but this change wasnt treated that way.

another issue is i genuinely HATE mikan having the stealing alice. she should never have had the stealing alice. do i realize thats more than half the manga im talking about? YES. it completely upended her character arc. her nullification alice was so understated! she felt like it was useless and was SO insecure about it. then all of a sudden she has the stealing alice, which can be dangerous, but definitely cannot be called “useless” and her story about uselessness/having a “boring” alice just. falls short. yukas story w the stealing alice was so meaningful and impactful on its own. mikan ALMOST being the next yuka couldve been compelling if it didnt ruin the set-up that the entire first half of the manga was focusing on.

anyway mikan is NOT a mary sue for the above reasons. she is not effortlessly perfect. many people in the manga call her plain. she can be really stupid. she doesnt always save the day. in fact, other people often have to save her, making her feel useless (which is why she shouldve saved natsume. they were each other’s key to resolving arcs and yet. and YET.) she can be loud, brash, bold, and often says the wrong things. she has a really apparent character arc and calling her a mary sue ignores all that. ppl who think mikan is a mary sue are my worst enemy and i will fist fight them.

now ill talk a little about mikan in fanfics bc i think its worth mentioning, especially since i filled out that square abt her being done dirty. like i said, mikan is stupid. im not insulting her. some people are stupid. shes not good at academics. shes a lot more sporty than she is brainy. she rushes to conclusions and doesnt always think things through. shes not really a rational person all the time. fanfics often treat this stupidity as a negative trait to be fixed. maybe shes stupid when shes little but she’ll be a genius when she gets older! look how smart she is now! instead of just letting her be dumb. she has other traits, like deep empathy, athleticism, passion, optimism, that are often sacrificed in fanfic in order to make room for her made up intelligence.

mikan in fanfic (especially if shes supposed to be older) is often painted as more subdued than her loud manga counterpart, more often cynical, introverted, skeptical, etc., and ALWAYS pretty even if SHE doesnt see it (despite being described often as plain in the manga). i have some theories about this.

1: western fans are more comfortable making mikan like a western mc than one more typical of anime. if u think abt what a typical western female lead looks like, she’s usually less feminine, “not like other girls,” a smart bookworm who is cynical and rational. this is familiar so i think a lot of western fanfic writers end up leaning mikan this way even at the cost of making her unrecognizable. so mikan being stupid and loud and optimistic are all traits to be fixed, bc theyre not as familiar in a lead role.

2. fans want to have a mature mikan, and they think theres no way she can keep her childish traits, like stupidity, boldness, impulsiveness, and idealism, and NOT be a child. i find that ridiculous. why cant mikan be a giddy, happy, upbeat adult? why does she have to lose all the traits that make her mikan in order to demonstrate maturity?

3. i might be off base with all of these, but this one... i feel the most strongly about. mikan is the main character. in a lot of stories, the reader is invited to relate to the main character, to project onto her. often, the main character is vague or universal BC imagining her as you is the whole point. fanfic (especially the older fanfic) turns mikan into that easily recognizable and relatable mc we can insert ourselves into.

anyway i have a lot more thoughts on mikan, way more than i could ever say in one post (which is why im doing an essay series) but these are some basic thoughts i have. im sorry its so long.

There are so many questions so I actually have to answer them with reasonable brevity 😢 so sad

1. I’m gna say the actual very earliest character for get to the point. She was named She-Ra this is not only way before the reboot but also way before I watched the original 80s she-ra with my dad as a kid so I was like super young. She was a superhero who wore basically this outfit

And grew up living in the jungle as an orphan. She had the power to shapeshift into any animal in a puff of gold glittery smoke. I was a genius for coming up with her

2. Yes, it’s Rocio

16. Joanna was an actual biologist from the inception of her character until like a week ago because I’m doing extensive retcons :,) I’m sad to see the concept go but I think it does benefit the story so oh well. She will always be cheesy sci fi unethical evil scientist in my heart. Nathan is an actual marine biologist and was interested in science form a young age so probably him

Basic picks for all of them (Im gna limit myself to one for each person) but I really like @lichensings ‘s oc arete, @vonkarmic ‘s oc faulkner, @lycanthrology ’s oc hollyhock (there are better werewolf story characters (better by like a lot lol she’s a minor character) + I love all of them but #hollyhocksweep), + @sistervirtue ‘s oc gabriel.

38. Luke was considered a prodigy at ballet prior to dying so him, Anjara would probably be good too she’s graceful and has a good sense of balance due to sword fighting training. The inverse of Kaleela (<another one of @lycanthrology ‘s ocs)

44. Oh this is difficult I guess I would say. I like how they have a lot of different and colorful personalities and designs. Like their personalities might not actually be that different in practice (I have a couple or archetypes that keep showing up 🥲 (super nice person amazed by the world around them I’ve used like 3x if not more)) but idk I like thinking abt them and how their concepts or visual designs contrast with each other it’s fun for me to like see the variety and have a bunch of different types of characters that I like he represented yk. I feel like if nothing else I at least don’t cookie cutter copy the same basic looks over and over except in like 1 or 2 instances so it’s cool. Also how there are a lot of masc women <3

49. Melanie just does like memes, Rico maybe also, but this says would enjoy so it has to be characters that don’t already like memes. Probably Julii she has a really stupid sense of humor due to being 13. Born to be an iPad roblox kid forced to live underwater in a fairy tale kingdom type place. Also Joseph who unfortunately has lost his canonical access to memes and video games due to massive retcons. So sad
