I've started trawling reddit, so I'm exposed to snippets of viewpoints that I've mostly siloed myself away from here on tumblr, but I'm genuinely startled by how many people start watching bl and come out with their first thoughts being "I want all these pairs of coworkers to be real couples; I believe these coworkers pairs are real couples."

Like, that's just something that would never even have occurred to me to assume.

I know this is an old and boring conversation, and I'm not trying to re-start psycho-analyzing this mindset, or the related phenomenon of fan service. Sometimes the oddity of it just hits me, you know?, and I have to register my surprise.

Does anyone know the history of the term "skinship?" I feel like I’ve heard it applied both to characters and to actors. Is it only used by English language fans? Or also in local languages? Is it used outside the Asian entertainment industries fandoms? That’s the only place I’ve encountered it.

It doesn’t really matter for anything, I’m just curious. I first read it only recently and it struck me as an odd word.
