I feel like the Gävle goat being eaten by birds is its most suitable fate yet, because it brings back two old traditions.

One is the yule goat as a gift giver. This was common in the 19th century, but then Jultomten/Santa took over.

Here's a picture from Elsa Beskow's old picture book "Petter och Lottas jul", with a family being visited by two separate yule goats bearing gifts.

The other pertinent tradition is the raising of a "julkärve", Christmas sheaf, for the birds to eat. This is still done, but not at all to the extent that it was in the mid 20th century.

In Alf Prøysens picture book "Den vesle bygda som glømte at det var jul" (The village that forgot that it was Christmas), it is a sheaf that makes a little girl remember that it's Christmas, and she then raises the sheaf in the flagpole to remind the rest of the village.

Hence, it is as though the Gävle goat has resumed its old position as gift giver, and has turned itself into a gift of a Christmas sheaf for the birds.

...Which also sounds uncomfortable like High Mass, when I think of it...

This story of the Magical Girl Megu-chan (魔女っ子メグちゃん) heavily features the magic of be ding spoons. Of course this reminds me of Mrs. Pepper Pot (スプーンおばさん), adapted from the Norwegian Mrs. Pepperpot (Teskjekjerringa) books by Alf Prøysen. Of course, that came to Japan later, but it’s still where my mind goes.

Good Morning!

I got up late this morning so I’m having to do the first part of online school in my pyjamas. Oh well, never mind!

I’m planning on cleaning my room later and then reading some more of my book. I’m currently reading The Mrs Pepperpot Stories by Alf Prøysen. It’s been years since I read them and they’re really good. What’s your favourite book?

There was a little dandelion, so bold and pleased in the country road’s ditch with puddle water to it’s knees. An unruly head shone yellow: Oh, how I am pretty! It had just watched it’s own reflection in it’s puddle.

In the ditch there walked a little toddler, as toddlers often do, in a wet and dirty coverall, with yellow unruly hair. He sat down in the puddle and reached out a hand and plucked with root and top his first dandelion.

On the road came many children, chatting cheerfully while they arranged fast and well a hepatica* blue bouquet. And the toddler shouted: “Look at me, what i have found here!” But the children only laughed and said: “How disheveled it is!”

“Oh no,” said the toddler, “I’ll take it home to my mother, and she’ll say it’s pretty and that I am very great.” “She says that just to comfort you,” said those who stood around. “Because you are only four years old and understand nothing.”

Then the toddler stumped home and sniffed a little, and the flower hung with it’s head and longed for water. He opened the door slowly and heavily, and suddenly his mother said: “Oh what a pretty flower you have - and how you are great!”

“You say that just to comfort me,” said the toddler indifferently. “Far from it” said mother and laughed. “I meant what i said. The greatest thing a mother knows, is in fact her boy who comes home and brings along his first dandelion.”

The first clip in this episode gave me such an association to this song, which reflects the self-image of a little boy through the state of a flower; a dandelion to be exact. 

*Fun fact: the Norwegian word for the flower “hepatica” is “blåveis” which is also is the word for a black eye.

How to import fandom and maybe other stuff from Norway

After Skam I know Norway became rather popular, and while you can take Norwegian courses, it doesn't help much if you can't actually use it (and know from own experience that talking Norwegian online to foreigners feels weird even if you know they understand Norwegian if they introduced themselves in English >////>, here on Tumblr I mostly write in English even to my Norwegian friends as it feels more natural). Some of you might even while not being interested in learning the language would like to import something fun to have something new and exciting in these often same-feeling days. Some of you might even just be after to support your favorite Norwegian artists. So if you are after more than just food on eBay, here ya go.

So, not many Norwegian online shops ships outside Norway as Norwegian shipping prices are pretty steep. So I've looked far and wide, and found 2 (4 if you include a sketchy souvenir shop I saw, but all the books they had were 2 translated Harry Potter books, riveting, and a grocery store so unless you are desperately after some weekly magazine do they not have much, unless you want some snacks, which is understandable). So the two I found are:

- Ivo Caprino

For you puppet/stop motion fans out there. They sell region free DVDs with Caprino's fairy tale inspired movies, and Flåklypa (my personal favorite). The DVDs include both sub and dub. Not much more can be said.

- Bokkilden

I didn't find this one on my own, it was Dina Norlund who found it. They have more than just books, so you can look at them too. But unfortunately the site, like the grocery store is it only available in Norwegian, but fear not! I have translated how to fill it here! After filling the cart:

I ordered a couple of books to some Youtubers I watch to test it, more about that below. They have no place to put state/province I thought (and you can't add it to zip/postal code as it only accepts numbers and one hypen), but the ekstraadresse (extra address) field I put it in there. In there it appeared two places, on top as a C/O, and further below right under the postal/zip code, then I clicked on endre adresse (edit address) and could remove the C/O field while the extra one below remained. Their shipping cost seems to be 200nok no matter what to other countries, just so you are aware.

As always, use a currency calculator when buying from other countries!

For those of you wanting to import something but doesn't want anything in Norwegian (yet), or you @fjordsoncomic fans out there, here are the volumes! In English! (they are in the souvenir section of book stores here)

I ordered from Caprino in March and Bokkilden now in April, so if they show up in upcoming videos, we know they're legit. I ordered from the grocery store some time ago, but they're kind of weird as you can see.

And to German Phenomena fans, in 2019 the 8th phenomena book finally came out, but Eliassen had to self-publish it. He's currently selling it through vipps (and conventions before you know what), but as vipps is only available to people with a Norwegian social security number, can you ask him on Instagram or Facebook if he please could start taking PayPal payments or something, could be useful for me too as I don't trust vipps.

If you are interested in the graphic novels and want them in English (and sold in bookstores where you live so you don't have to import from Norway), how about filling Seven Seas' survey (they count as #NordicManga) or send a mail to Dark Horse or something. If they first come out in English, they'll likely come out around the world not soon after.

Coffee + ice cream?

Coffee - It’s a tie between The Chewing Gum Rescue by Margaret Mahy and The Mrs Pepperpot Stories by Alf Prøysen.

Ice cream - I like cold weather like hot weather, in moderation and never to extremes. I do like a cool fresh morning, especially when the sun is shining and sparkles on an otherwise bleak landscape.
