Dipping my toes in (Fun with Familiarity - Law&Order: Special Victims Unit)
Tumblr media
First show to start my trek into NYC TV was Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Like many people who had cable growing up, I spent a lot of time watching this series with my family. We even got excited to watch whenever there was a marathon on the USA Network. However, I never watched the original Law & Order nor did I ever start this series from episode 1. So I figured it would be nice to try this one as a way to ease into my journey.
It obviously did not disappoint. SVU is a good procedural despite tackling topics that make the general public uncomfortable. As a New Yorker, it can feel like we are numb to the dangers of city life. But this show always puts it front and center and even if you’ve seen all the episodes, I feel like you can still be swayed to pick different sides of a case they are working on or even pick different sides of characters.
Early on Elliot Stabler seems very sure of his views on criminals and the law due to him being a father of 4, a practicing Catholic, and a marine/soldier prior to the series. I believe like many he goes through his career with a sense of black and white law views. On the other end we have Olivia Benson, a younger detective who is unfortunately aware of the large grey areas of the justice system. This comes strongly from being a woman in the police force and the child of TRIGGER WARNING rape TRIGGER WARNING. Many episodes focus on their views and conflicts toward their cases and how it affects them moving forward as people, detectives, and partners.
I’ve watched SVU up until Stabler left, so not a stranger to the format of the show and not a stranger to shipping Benson and Stabler. I’d say this show can be a good view into major parts of Manhattan and can be a good litmus test of things a viewer can be comfortable with in terms of sex conversations and in terms of morality.
While I do love the main detectives, John Munch and Odafin Tutuola are a greater source for comedy when the show needs it. Munch’s analytical stereotyping of society and Fin’s rational oblviousness make a nice pairing for viewings of the show who can easily understand their takes as simple watchers and not as anyone who’s had to experience such events in their life.
One of my favorite shows ever and some day I’ll watch the post-Stabler era.

"I am an Oriental. And being an Oriental, I could never be completely a man." Song Liling, Act 3, Scene 1, M. Butterfly
I thought the quote accompanied by these striking images from the broadway show starring B. D Wong and John Lithgow adapted from David Henry Hwang's 1988 play titled M. butterfly should be a fitting first post on this account which will explore asian masculinity.
I am aware of the broadness of the topic which was why I initially wanted to focus on masculinity amongst AA in the U.S, but the wide array of materials present on the internet encouraged me to make this journey an ongoing project in the form of continued learning and sharing of knowledge beyond the period of my social work Practice Lab course for which I created this account in the first place.
I hope this space will provide a deeper understanding and exposure to both the past and current media and literature surrounding AA masculinity; I will also incorporate how the intersection of both race and gender further define AA masculinity.
David Henry Hwang is an American playwright, librettist, screenwriter, and theater professor at Columbia University in New York City.

Premiered #OnThisDay in 1999, #LawAndOrderSpecialVictimsUnit (often abbreviated to Law & Order: SVU or just SVU) is a crime drama series created by Dick Wolf's own production company, Wolf Entertainment, for #NBC. The first spin-off of Law & Order, it starred #ChristopherMeloni as Detective Elliot Stabler until Meloni left the series in 2011 after 12 seasons, and #MariskaHargitay as Detective (ultimately promoted to Captain) Olivia Benson, now the commanding officer of the Special Victims Unit after originally having been Stabler's partner in a fictionalized version of the New York City Police Department. Meloni reprised his role as Stabler in 2021 in the spin-off series Law & Order: Organized Crime. Law & Order: Special Victims Unit follows the style of the original Law & Order in that some episodes are loosely based on real crimes that have received media attention. The series also starred #RichardBelzer, #DannFlorek, #MichelleHurd, #StephanieMarch, #IceT, #BDWong, #DianeNeal, #TamaraTunie, #AdamBeach, #MichaelaMcManus, #DannyPino, #KelliGiddish, #RaúlEsparza, #PeterScanavino, #PhilipWinchester, #JamieGrayHyder, #DemoreBarnes, #OctavioPisano and #MollyBurnett.

Executive Decision (1996)
Tumblr media
I picked up Executive Decision solely because the title amused me. I was expecting junk but it proved to be a pleasant surprise. There are plenty of twists and tension throughout to keep you entertained.
When a Boeing 747-200 is hijacked by terrorists, Dr. David Grant (Kurt Russell) believes they are after more than just their leader's freedom. He suspects the plane will be used to unleash a deadly chemical agent when the hostages are released. He, along with a special ops team (which includes John Leguizamo, Joe Morton, BD Wong, Whip Hubley, and their leader, Steven Seagal) plan on sneaking aboard the Boeing before they make it into U.S. Airspace. Then, things go terribly wrong.
Bad guys take over a plane. Our hero and his entourage have to sneak around and take out the threat while the hostages are threatened. Outmanned and outgunned, the risks are high. This plot isn’t all that original. Stuart Baird nonetheless gives us enough new material to make it feel like its own thing. Firstly, it's a great setup. One wrong move and our heroes give away their position or get themselves killed. They only have a limited amount of time before the plane gets shot down by U.S. Navy Fighter Jets and then there’s that deadly chemical onboard. All on a plane. That means explosive decompression, running out of fuel, storms/turbulence, and your life in the hands of two pilots who have guns pointed to their backs. Your nerves are bent to the point of breakage.
There are also some nice touches added to give you that little bit of extra. Halle Berry plays a helpful stewardess. Her character is a lot of fun. Think our heroes are underdogs? She doesn’t have any weapons to defend herself with.
I've got to credit writers Jim and John Thomas for keeping the twists coming and making the most of this setup. When you think it’s over, it isn't. Not even close. I also have to tip my hat to a choice made with Steven Seagal’s character that blew me away. He's known for his ego so this was an unexpected turn. I was convinced that I was mistaken when I had just seen it with my own two eyes! Actually, this film makes great use out of all of its characters. Even Oliver Platt, who I had pegged as just comic relief, plays a much more important role.
All that said, 133 minutes is excessive. Just a bit, not a huge deal. The familiar story is also noteworthy, but not a sinking blow. I did feel uneasy about the choice of villains here though. I wish the baddies here were anything other than Middle-Eastern terrorists, particularly with David Suchet as their leader, and the multiple references to the Quran… it’s just a bit too much. You might let that one go as well but one thing's for sure: the love story tacked on at the end? Completely unnecessary.
Executive Decision contains big surprises, plenty of scenes to make your palms all clammy, and makes imaginative use of its location. It needed some trimming but that’s ok, few movies could be called perfect. I’ll give it a 3.5/5. Check it out. (Full-screen version on VHS, October 12, 2015)

I *finally* made the time to watch #MrRobot and WOW! I was hooked from the very first episode and binged all 4 seasons like a mofo. This is a series that gets better and better with each new season as the story grows and builds and OMFG. The story plays out like #Hackers meets #FightClub - it is extremely intelligently entertaining storytelling. Great characters, fantastic acting performances! #RamiMalek is simply perfection in this role and #BDWong is a revelation - the whole cast is superb. I am so glad I finally watched this series, I cannot recommend it more. And that ending(s)?! Just, wow! 🤖 (at Los Angeles, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/CKcT-JlBaJb/?igshid=1tqo3y2xrk6ff
