Romanov myths part one: Alexei being injured by sledding down the stairs
Although Alexei was given more freedom than is assumed by many people, and certainly had a rambunctious personality, the long-standing story of him sledding down the stairs and then crashing, causing a haemophilia attack in Tobolsk is a myth.
Both Nicholas and Alexandra do not mention this in their diaries, and surviving letters from the Grand Duchesses also do not record Alexei’s rumoured ill-fated sledding adventure. This especially is unusual, as their letters from Tobolsk included a lot of detail about them having fun sledding and on the snow mountain they constructed, so this omission is telling. Alexei did, however, have a sled and a boat which he, his friend Kolya Derevenko, and sister Olga sometimes rode down the stairs and onto the pond (which appears to be mostly small pools of water with a lot of imagination) outside (Olga apparently lost her balance and then fell out once!)
From Alexei's diary (note how he does not mention crashing or having a haemophilia attack):
Sunday 25/7 March [1918]
At eight o'clock there was a religious service, Mama and the sisters sang because the choir was busy. Kolya came at two o'clock. We played in the garden in the afternoon. We shot at a target with bows and arrows [there is a photo of this - see below]. It's very interesting. After tea, we played hide and seek. I received a sleigh and a boat as a gift from a local trader, models of the sleds and boats of the region. Kolya and I played with them a lot and we went down the stairs in the boat. He left at nine o'clock.

Thank you very much, dear Dalechka, for the letter. It took a long time to get here – since December! But it is good it arrived. How are you? We think of you often. It is more or less quiet here. The weather has been divine, but not very warm the last few days. We continue to chop and cut up firewood, and it turns out pretty good. We fixed up our swing, and started to use it again, but probably the ropes will break soon as it has been done poorly. Our garden is a mass of water and mud. My brother has a little boat in which we, so to say, take a ride (it is a big imagination.) There is still not enough water, so we push it of the tracks with sticks and of course get completely soaked. Well, it is a little bit of fun! And how do you pass the time? Well, we are off for a walk so I must finish. I wish all of you the very best. Big greetings to all! I kiss you firmly. Greetings to your Papa and Seryozha.

In reality, Alexei injured himself after contracting a bad cough. This was most likely caught off one of the visiting children to the house who kept him company, probably Kolya. The repeated coughing unfortunately triggered internal bleeding, leading to a haemophilia attack which left him unable to walk.
It was this attack that meant Alexei, Olga, Tatiana, and Anastasia were not moved to Ekaterinburg with their parents and sister Maria, as the Heir was too ill to move across the country. However, he did make some sort of recovery, at least to the point of being able to be safely transported to Ekaterinburg, and he is photographed sat upright on the Rus steamer, although looking thin. Despite this slight recovery, he was still unable to walk for the rest of his life. The night of the execution he was given a chair to sit on due to being unable to stand independently for any length of time.

So - where did this myth of Alexei sledding down the stairs causing his last haemophilia attack come from?
Robert K. Massie’s 1967 book ‘Nicholas and Alexandra’ appears to be the origin of the story in popular history. On page 490, Massie wrote:
‘[Alexei] was devising new and reckless games which no one seemed able to inhibit. One of these — riding down the inside stairs on a boat with runners which he had used on the snow mountain — led to calamity. He fell and began to bleed into the groin.’
Whilst Massie’s book is a cornerstone in Romanov historical works, it was released 56 years ago, when there was still a fair amount of mystery and rumour surrounding the Romanovs and their final months. The 1971 film, also named ‘Nicholas and Alexandra’, adapted the book into a three-hour epic film dedicated a whole scene to re-enacting this myth, giving it more publicity.

To summarise: although Alexei did have a boat and a sled whilst at Tobolsk and did ride them down the stairs, these games never caused a haemophilia attack and he never crashed them to the point of causing serious injury. Rather, he contracted a cough which caused internal bleeding. Robert K. Massie mistakenly put this in his book 'Nicholas and Alexandra', and the myth became more popular due to its inclusion in the 1971 film of the same name.

hello hello tags, admin salma here! big reputation, big reputation; jaehaerys targaryen has a big reputation. here at dance of dragons, queen daenaerys targaryen just lost her throne of the crownlands and the stormlands to her cousin, the green prince jaehaerys. meaning technically, the greens won the dance of dragons. considering jaehaerys has been planning this for years, his conquering has made ripples across the rest of westeros.
other than that, here are the current plots per region:
the westerlands: king tyland lannister's reformation and breaking away from the faith of oldtown, denouncing the high septon has resulted in bloodshed on the steps of the starry itself.
the reach: recently emerging from a civil war between the tyrell brothers, king cedric tyrell is working to maintain naval dominance at sea whilst also dealing with a high septon in oldtown keen on making enemies. internally, they also are handling tensions with the summer isles and lys.
the riverlands: following the betrayal of the eldest tully sister, king casimir tully finds himself at the end of lyseni wrath. what move will the riverlands take now?
the north: skagos, house bolton and house umber have united together to stand against king owen stark's 'southern' mentality, resulting in a bloody northern war that feels like nothing will be the same after the cries of war quieten.
the vale: after the discovery of nettles and sheepstealer in the mountains of the moon, will it be under the rule of cruel queen ravella that the threat of the mountain clans is over forever?
dorne: maintaining their close association with the free cities across the narrow sea, dorne has a new ruling prince: mors martell, who has a different vision for dorne than his father. and now, they have dragons on their borders to deal with.

AITA for letting my son live?
I (50s M) am the emperor of a vast amount of territories. One of these is a province to the south that hasn't settled down since it was conquered by my great-grandfather over a century ago. It is tradition in my family for princes to be sent off at the age of 16 to govern a part of the empire as preparation for their duties as ruler.
Well it seems like two of my boys are unruly. I can understand W (21M) being an attention seeker because I was too busy with his sisters and brother Tb (26M). Have you tried spending time with 6 wives and 26 children while also ruling an empire? It's impossible, I wouldn't have been able to do it even if I tried! So yes, I suppose I can understand why W became one of the leaders of the then-brewing revolution in the province I assigned him to govern. But why the fuck did Tb, my beloved son, order the deaths of all his half-brothers?! I was giving him my love, I raised him to be my guaranteed successor when inheriting the throne is an unpredictable and deadly business for us. He had no reason to betray me like that.
But that's in the past and this isn't about him. Like I mentioned before, W took the brewing tensions in his assigned region and concentrated them into a fullblown revolution with the goal of regaining independence. I responded to his declaration of independence with my own declaration of war.
The war lasted for roughly a year and a half with myself and Tb leading one side while W led his side. It was at this point that his friend approached me to ask if there was anything I wanted in exchange for ending the war. They gave me information I specifically requested and I upheld my end of the bargain. By imprisoning W and all of his high ranking colleagues on the grounds of treason.
Treason is treason, nobody is above the law, not even a son of an emperor. I had to make that clear by punishing him. I even went the extra mile by stripping him of all his titles so he'd die with the same lack of prestige as his comrades. But then I received a bit of intel that made me tweak my plans for W.
Tb and W share a mother and they have a third brother Tm (14M) through her too. Tm was 12 when the war started and like the foolish child he was, ran off to be with W. He was captured along with his brother. In his cell, W begged for Tm to lose his life first so he wouldn't have to die in his big brother's blood. A noble cause, I'll give him that, but this plea gave me an idea.
I organised for Tm to die while W was transferred to a more secure cell where I intend for him to remain in solitary confinement until his own natural death. Apparently this was a bad move. My wife hates me, as do my daughters, while Tb heavily resents the fact I'm using this as an opportunity to keep him in line as well. From what I hear, W is starting to lose his mind down there. The public weren't pleased to see a boy die either but they don't get it. It wasn't about whether Tm deserved to die or whether he was responsible for anything during the war/revolution. My decision was purely based on the fact W needed to learn his lesson in the most effective way possible.
I'm just trying to keep the natural order of things in check and prove that I'm not someone to cross. I mean fuck, I wasn't even going to treat the rebelling province that harshly until W got involved and whipped them up into a frenzy.
Am I really the asshole for punishing a serious threat to my empire when I didn't even kill him?

Saw your comment on Nordickies' post that you have regional OCs, are they regional OCs of Finland and would you mind sharing about them? I'm on the lookout for Nordic regional OCs to discuss and draw fanart for. (You would also be my 3rd mutual with regional OCs that I promise to draw... eventually, when I'm less slow and lazy)
Yessss! I've wanted to draw them myself as well but I guess I just haven't got into it yet (always feeling kinda insecure about drawing).
I guess larger areas like Ostrobothnia and Savonia etc would like to be split like they are split in the current regional division as they can have quite some cultural differences nowadays so basically you'd have a lot of twins like:
North Savo and South Savo twins
North Karelia and South Karelia twins
Kanta-Häme and Päijät-Häme twins
And of course the Ostrobothnia quadruplets, one of whom is Swedish-speaking
So maybe the bigger units like big Ostrobothnia would be like old countries so they're gone but there are the little ones now instead...
I'm kinda struggling with Lapland because the Finnish part is totally a little brother to the Ostrobothnia quadruplets but a small part of it is within Sápmi. I'm not really sure how to navigate that in an inoffensive way...
Ok big ramble happening now so let's put a cut here. Warning the next part is L O N G!
Kainuu
So we have Kainuu, she used to live in the Ostrobothnian house... room... whatever they are in the region-verse ^^'' She always thought North Ostrobothnia was cooler than her, like a big sister, thinking her dialect is better etc. And of course, North Ostrobothnia was also wealthier. Kainuu would conduct her trade of tar through North Ostrobothnia. But at the same time, she desperately wanted to build her independence from the "big sister", she was Eastern Finnish culturally after all, unlike the Western Finnish North Ostrobothnia. Even tried to become her own province (move out of the house?), but failed. However, now she has successfully become her own region.
She used to be very agricultural with no big cities or "high culture" to show off, although she is quite the skilled poet. Everyone still sees her as a starving, poor farmer, which she indeed might have been at one point (not unique in this aspect though), but others seem to have failed to notice that she's become quite tech focused! She develops video games and does programming, and even set up Europe's fastest supercomputer in her house with the help from some other European countries.
Though of course, she has never abandoned her hobby of hiking and, controversially to some, hunting.
Ostrobothnia
In Finnish, Pohjanmaa. In Swedish, Österbotten.
Like I said, there's four of them, and one of them is Swedish-speaking (primarily). Though some other Swedish-speaking regions out there might argue that his dialect is barely understandable... And oh boy does he like sailing, it and fishing are incredibly important to him. To avoid confusion, he might introduce himself to you as "Pampas".
He also has close ties with South Ostrobothnia. This guy though? Walks around in a Jussipaita and a knife on his belt. He is very proud of his identity, probably more than anyone else of the regions. In history, he had the unfortunate reputation of starting a fight, no matter with fists or knives, and no matter if it was at someone's wedding. While he doesn't do this anymore, he is not ashamed of that history. He thinks it's badass. He is also an expert musician, known for his vast collection of folk music.
(Now I'll just add: I go to singing classes, and yesterday I was literally singing a folk song from there and what was it about you ask? It was about throwing hands at a wedding :D)
(These guys also have some controversial hobbies related to furs...)
I guess I should also add that he's quite religious, and so are Central and North Ostrobothnia.
Central Ostrobothnia is also musical, she is a true fiddle-playing master. North Ostrobothnia I already talked about a bit. Her speciality is the kantele. She is the most successful out of the four, although that does not mean the others would be miserable either.
Savonia
Welcome to the relaxed company of the Savo twins! They will invite you for a cup of coffee and some kalakukko on the market square. North Savo will insist that her capital is the center of the world. They have close ties to the Karelias and share a lot in common. And you can never be quite sure if you can get a straight answer out of them. They are also "the funny ones".
Karelia
Karelia twins are also quite relaxed and hospitable like the other easteners, and they also have quite some song and kantele skills. They will bake you a trillion different kinds of pies, and South Karelia says he'll get you some "atom" and "hydrogen" and comes back with meat pies. I guess North Karelia would also be mending her ties to Russia's region "Republic of Karelia"? They used to live in the same house after all. (I'm referring to pre-Swedish rule). Although since then, North Karelia has got a fair share of Savonian influence in her as well, including starting to primarily speak in a Savonian dialect. (Like I said, close ties.) South Karelia used to be so wealthy and "cultured", but Russia put a little wrench in that...
Both have been on the front lines of countless of wars, as well as being tossed around between Sweden and Russia.
Pirkanmaa
Holy shit this guy is suddenly speeding to the top. At this rate, he is going to be challenging Uusimaa himself! I bet Varsinais-Suomi is grinding her teeth together in jealousy (they have a playful rivalry). At one point in history, he had quite the communist opinions. Now, he'll make you eat blood sausages.
Uusimaa
The wealthiest, the most attractive, the most international, owner of Helsinki. Other regions will call him "arrogant" and accuse him of "thinking he's better than the rest of us". He will probably complain about having to pay stuff for the other regions though. Maybe he will throw in slang words originating from Somali and the other regions can only be confused. Whether the others like it or not though, he is very culturally influential. He's not a bad guy and is quite accepting.
Varsinais-Suomi
The original Finland! The location of the original capital! Reduced to what?? As said, she has a playful rivalry with Pirkanmaa and they compete with each other in a lot of things, especially ice hockey.
Keski-Suomi
A rapper. He's a rapper.

Well that's not quite all of them but it's all of the ideas I have in my head now. I kinda really wish to avoid all the stuff about like, areas taken by the Soviet Union etc because that's like really politically controversial I'd just rather not touch it tbh. Like the nature of Karelia being split to multiple parts etc so I want to make sure this is only about the regions of Finland and not like a historical cultural area or an ethnicity.
I didn't include appearances right now but I do have some ideas about those as well.

I read What Once Was Mine and I have... Thoughts.

Yeah, so, uh, this got long. 😂This review has all the spoilers.
General:
The Framing Device
So I've only read one other Twisted Tale and it didn't do this, and from a couple of reviews I read, I gather none of the other Twisted Tales do this.
It's trying to be The Princess Bride, with a brother re-writing the story of Tangled for his sixteen-year-old sister, who is undergoing chemotherapy. He's patiently sat through the movie with her multiple times and read the book of the movie to her twice, so he suggests this time, he put his own spin on the story and tell her a different version.
One which includes historical figures like Countess Bathory. I think the idea was “Brendan is a history nerd and he’s showing off in his reinterpretation of the story” but it just didn’t make much sense (see “The Setting”, below).
I guess this would be fine if it just bookended the book, but it doesn't. Every now and then there's a couple of pages where Daniella questions the direction the plot is taking, and Brendan justifies it, and tells her to just wait, he’s got it figured out.
Honestly, it felt like these scenes were a way for the author to say, “Yeah, I know this bit’s weird and maybe doesn’t work, but shhh, we’re rolling with it.”
When you read the author’s note, you learn that Liz Braswell’s sister had cancer and lost her hair and it was through that journey that she realised why Rapunzel’s hair is such a key thing and so symbolic for a lot of people and I’m just… you could have still had that in mind and just not actually put it in your book.
The Setting
So instead of being set in Ye Olde Fantasy Times in Ye Olde Fantasy Setting, this is set in Europe. Our Europe. Supposedly. During the late fifteenth century. And all I can think of, if we’re somewhere in the Hungary/Slovakia/Czech Republic region during that time period, how on Earth has Corona maintained its independence and not being taken over by the Hapsburgs?
The “Twist” // The Plot
This is a Twisted Tale after all, and I liked the idea of the Moondrop Flower instead of the Sundrop in general. I also liked the idea of Rapunzel’s magic being tied to the phases of the moon and mostly being different types of transformation.
It’s a very surface-level story, though? There’re no big themes about finding your dreams. She doesn’t even SEE THE LANTERNS in the end. THE LANTERNS. RAPUNZEL’S WHOLE THING. They just end up missing that entirely, and she’s totally cool with it.
It’s really just a thing happens and then that is followed by another thing, and then another. The cause and effect is limited, and there’s no foreshadowing anything.
There are people after her, but the stakes never really feel high. The showdown at the end is all done and dusted in a couple of pages. There is no real villain.
Also, it’s one thing in the original where Rapunzel is kidnapped and her parents have no idea where she’s been taken. Even though they don’t know exactly where she is in this one, they did give her up willingly because they were scared of the damage her hair could do… but you’re telling me they didn’t spend every waking hour researching the Moonflower and talking to every witch in the vicinity and finding out exactly how its powers work, all with the intention of bringing Rapunzel home asap?
It honestly feels like a teenager’s improvised fanfiction, and if that’s what they were going for with the whole Brendan and Daniella device, then… well done, I guess?
Characters:
Rapunzel
Her characterisation was pretty good. She’s still got that boundless enthusiasm for learning and for adventure. She’s resourceful. Gothel has her convinced that she killed her parents with her hair and that she’s a murderer, rather than “the outside world is dangerous”, which was an interesting change. She still loves to paint and when she learns how her power changes throughout the lunar cycle, she starts painting lunar charts to document it and that felt really in character. The whole “have to visit a magic circle of rocks and make an offering to the goddess to tap into your powers properly” felt out of place though. Canon Rapunzel isn’t called a witch for her magic, and I didn’t really see why this version had to be either (don’t get me wrong, I love me some witchcraft in my fantasy books, but just… not here).
Flynn/Eugene
Heh. He’s still working with the Stabbingtons and steals the crown and is apparently a totally accomplished thief and a rogue and all that but he just felt a lot younger and less swashbuckling. Also he got badly injured in the confrontation where Rapunzel is captured and taken to Bathory, and I think the author was going for a parallel with Gothel stabbing him in the movie, but there isn’t the same level of connection between him and Rapunzel here, so there’s no big sacrifice, and honestly, I found it kind of funny when he kept fainting from the pain during the final rescue. I’m pretty sure I was not supposed to find it funny.
Which brings me to the romance.
If this hadn’t been a Tangled retelling, I probably would have been okay with it. It wouldn’t have excited me but I would have accepted it. But because it is a Tangled retelling, it just feels like it’s missing so much. There’s no charm. Not much in the way of flirting. There’s no real evolution of Flynn’s feelings, just one second, he’s bringing Rapunzel flowers to apologise for the fact that they’re going to miss the lanterns because he how much she wanted to see them. And then he just randomly kisses her because apparently he ~cares~ about her now.
Admittedly, I did get a great deal of amusement out of this exchange:
Flynn: {attempts the Smoulder on Rapunzel}
Rapunzel: {thinking} What is he doing with his face? {tries to mimic him}
Flynn: Oh my god, what are you doing with your face?
Rapunzel: I don’t know, what are you doing with yours?
Mother Gothel
… what was the point of her? She still had the Sundrop flower to keep her young. So I couldn’t work out why she wanted to raise Rapunzel. It seems her whole plan was spend nineteen years raising her and then live off the profits of selling her in marriage to the highest bidder. Hell of a long game. She wasn’t even selling the trinkets the royal family sent for Rapunzel. She is not the same kind of threat to Rapunzel that she is in the movie. She seems mildly annoyed that Rapunzel won’t come home with her, but then she sort of just flounces off. Rapunzel has the crown with her this whole time, so she can’t shove it in Rapunzel’s face or anything.
Maximus
Okay, if you are going to turn Max into a human, at least do it like @chaico did here. (ngl, still obsessed with that drawing of Max and Eugene together). He should be in the prime of his life, not an aging captain close to retirement!
And if you’re going to make him human, just… stick with that. DON’T FREAKING TURN HIM INTO A LITERAL HORSE AT THE END.
Gina
Whoops, I nearly forgot to include them, that's how memorable they were. I didn't mind Gina. Sometimes she gave me Cass vibes? But other times very much not.
Bathory
She’s supposedly the main villain? But she’s barely there, and when she is, she doesn’t seem all that threatening? I mean, she does threaten to kill Rapunzel if Rapunzel doesn’t do as she says, but again, it’s just so flat and superficial. I had no reason to fear.
This is over 1300 words now. I feel like I should stop. 😭

Early Days
Saffron was found in the forest by the siblings' aunt. The aunt was confused and concerned about how a small child ended up in the woods all alone.
She quickly took the child in, intending on dropping him off at her sister's place since the aunt had no clue on how to raise a child.
it took two years for her to reunite with her sister, dropping the child off and leaving as quickly as she arrived.
The siblings' mother found it difficult to introduce Saffron to her kids, while her daughter, Heather, was shy, her youngest son was even shyer.
Heather quickly took to the new kid though, instantly befriending him. It took Camille a long time to warm up to Saffron though. Their mother often had to watch where she was stepping, afraid of tripping over her quiet son.
not to come out of the more writing type of rambling, idk how to explain this next part in a neat and tidy way hehe
Camille was slow with warming to Saffron, like couldn't be in the same room as him alone type of slow.
Camille didn't like Saffron at all
which in my opinion is hilarious cause of their future dynamics hehe
i think the aunt and mother knew that Saffron was a noble of some kind, or at least not from their region.
how did they know he was royalty..? eh??
tbf it'd be a bit too crazy for them to know his actual origins, all they knew is that someone threw the poor kid into the forest and left.
As the kids grew older, so did she, and eventually it was time for her to pass on. It was difficult for the mother to leave her two kids alone but she knew that they would be safe, Saffron deemed himself worthy.
Though not worthy enough to bare the family's curse. No... That responsibility belonged to her youngest.
after their mother's death, the siblings decide it's time to follow the path (oohhhh spooky loreeee) and enjoy being independent adults!
Saffron comes with them because well, he doesn't have anywhere else to go lmao
The trio eventually find their way out of the woods and enter a abandoned village. Camille doesn't have a good feeling about it.
C: "Maybe we shouldn't enter the rotting buildings?"
H: "You're overreacting Cami, it's perfectly safe! Look some birds are nesting on there"
C: "That's because they weigh nothing"
Sibling banter aside, Camille's worry is validated as Saffron notices something in the distance. He pulls the siblings aside when those somethings, people? approach the village.
Saffron isn't sure if they are actually people or something else but whatever the case. They have to escape, as quickly and quietly as possible.

So Heather's a very light-hearted and often cheerful person. She tries to find the best in everything and everyone even if it means coming off as a little bit... light in the head.
I like characters who are goofy lil idiots but will beat shit up if they have the chance... uhhh there's a proper term for that trope, i can't think of it rn.
If Camille's the brain, then Heather is the brawn. and Saffron is there to be sexy.
but yeah, those people-looking things aren't people and are actually manifestations of the corruption, which is the big bad sadge of this story.
the corruption is related to the family curse i mentioned earlier. the curse is currently infecting Camille's left arm and is slowly creeping up his neck. He keeps his left arm bandaged up and often keeps it covered by his cloak.
Attempting to keep it a secret from his sister and friend. Though Heather is aware of the family's curse and the fact that her brother is carrying on it's legacy. She isn't aware of how bad it's gotten yet.
Saffron isn't aware of the curse at all. He just knows that Camille is carrying on something precious to the family.
this is the part where i mention that the siblings aren't entirely human.
not really sure of Saffron realizes that he's royalty and more specifically the lost prince of a distant land. probably a tangled moment where he connects all the dots and it's just

Saffron's homeland is probably in a dire situation. probably infected by the corruption, slowly being consumed by the darkness.
whatever the case Saffron realizes that he needs to go home and help his people.
He considers asking the siblings for help but realizes that by doing that, they'll nolonger follow the path.
and he remembers their mother telling them what happens if they don't follow it.
Heather eventually pieces together what's happening as well and decides to help Saffron go home. It doesn't matter if she doesn't follow the path, helping Saffron save his people is more important. and maybe along the way they can find a way to destroy the corruption.
Saffron is happy that Heather is willing to help but he's unsure as to what Camille thinks. Ever since his mother's death, Camille had been acting different. While he still acts the same around Heather, being a worrywart about his older sister, Saffron can tell that there's some kind of barrier keeping him from getting closer to the other man.
why have a normal friendship between guys when you can have childhood friends to whatever the fuck is happening between Saffron and Camille.

Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the 16th century unifier of Japan
Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1539–September 18, 1598) was the leader of Japan who reunified the country after 120 years of political fragmentation. During his rule, known as the Momoyama or Peach Mountain era, the country coalesced as a more or less peaceful federation of 200 independent daimyo (great lords), with him as imperial regent.
Early life
Toyotomi Hideyoshi was born in 1536, in Nakamura, Owari Province, Japan . He was the second son of Yaemon, a peasant and part-time soldier of the Oda clan, who died in 1543 when he was 7 years old and his sister about 10. Hideyoshi’s mother soon remarried. Her new husband also served Oda Nobuhide, the daimyo from the Owari region, and she had another son and a daughter.
Hideyoshi was small for his age and skinny. His parents sent him to a temple for education, but the boy ran away in search of adventure. In 1551, he joined the service of Matsushita Yukitsuna, a servant of the powerful Imagawa family in Totomi province. This was unusual because both Hideyoshi’s father and stepfather had served the Oda clan.
Joining Oda
Hideyoshi returned home in 1558 and offered his services to Oda Nobunaga, son of the daimyo. At that time, the Imagawa clan’s army of 40,000 soldiers was invading Owari, Hideyoshi’s home province. Hideyoshi took a big risk: Oda’s army only numbered about 2,000 assets. In 1560, the armies of Imagawa and Oda clashed at the Battle of Okehazama. Oda Nobunaga’s tiny force ambushed Imagawa’s troops in a heavy storm and won an incredible victory, driving off the invaders.
Legend has it that the 24-year-old Hideyoshi served in this battle as Nobunaga’s sandal bearer. However, Hideyoshi does not appear in Nobunaga’s surviving writings until the early 1570s.
Promotion
Six years later, Hideyoshi led a raid that captured Inabayama Castle for the Oda clan. Oda Nobunaga rewarded him by making him a general.
In 1570, Nobunaga attacked the castle of his brother-in-law, Odani. Hideyoshi led the first three detachments of a thousand samurai each against the fully fortified castle. Nobunaga’s army used the devastating new technology of firearms, instead of mounted swordsmen. However, muskets are of little use against castle walls, so Hideyoshi’s section of Oda’s army prepared for a siege.
By 1573, Nobunaga’s troops had defeated all of their enemies in the area. For his part, Hideyoshi was given control of three regions within Omi Province. By 1580, Oda Nobunaga had consolidated power in more than 31 of Japan’s 66 provinces.

What do the nobles do in your Butterfly Reign universe? What are their responsibilities in court, and/or politically?
Sorry for how long it took me to answer, I've been eyeing this question for a long while but has procrastinated with my response
Nobles are, above everything, land owners and governers. Each noble house has a domain, and each domain their own valuable resources: mines, farmland, forest territories and so on. Thus responsibilites of those houses would be along managing this resources, trading with other regions as well as governing the villages and cities that are part of their domain (example: Quackity with Lmanburg). You kinda can think of it like of states in US, with king as the president and noble houses as state governments.
If something happens in one particular region, the Emperor/King holds accountable whichever noble or noble family that owns it. So, technically speaking, the monarch does not own all of the land in the country, it's all separated between nobles. There is also a thing called manors - a big house with some land, there is usually several in each domain - and those need governing too. Hiring and firing servants, restocking on food, making repairs and hosting social events - basically what Tommy does with the palace but on a smaller scale. Lord and the Lady of the manor are responsible for that - they could be a husband and a wife, or a son and a mother, brother and sister, depending on the marital status of the current owner.
The ruling family may also have their personal land, and that is usually under the governance of princes/princesses or dukes/duchesses, as those are, for the most part, close relatives of the Emperor. For Antarctic Empire, that has been Duchess Clara.
Now, not all of nobles are land owners. There is always a head of the family that has the most power. If a duke has five/six children, one of them will be the heir, another two or three will assist him or marry into another domain and rule there, but there still will be a few who are not occupied with governance. Cousins, aunts and uncles, illegitimate children who are not at power can seek other career options:
•Business and commerce. A lot of nobles start their own businesses, be it a shipbuilding company, a hotel, a fashion house or a pastry shop. Usually their business is sponsored by the noble house they belong to, but can also be independent of any family and pay taxes directly to the Imperial family rather to the domain owner.
•Military. Part of the knights and royal guards are landless, low-ranking nobles. Example: Captain Sparklez, Sapnap
•Country governance. Most people in the Emperor/King's council are nobles. In the Empire, a prime example would be Sneeg, Minister of Internal Affairs
•Serving nobles of higher status. Ladies-in-waiting are with no exceptions noble women, and the same is almost always true for aides, attendants, stewards and secretaries. Maids, cooks, stablemen and a few other positions on the other hand are considered to be lowly and are left for commoners.
•If a noble doesn't have a need in money, they can also be a scholar, a musician, artist, architect and basically any other profession that commoners occupy

Just because us Asians use honourifics, that doesn’t mean we are all blood related, Jesus Christ...
As an Asian and a Hetalian, I just want to say something on this whole discourse.
I don’t know much about the discourse surrounding @frukmerunning, but I have read people’s post about it. For those who don’t know, she made an Instagram story on how she doesn’t see China and Japan as blood relatives, and they technically aren’t in canon, and that Nichu isn’t incest in her own opinion. After that, people started to call her a pro shipper of inc*st, a p*do, and even had the audacity to doxx her! Making her delete all of her social media accounts.
Ok, people have their own opinions and views when it comes to Hetalia characters. Personally, I don’t see China and Japan as relatives either, and if I do, it would be a bit weird for me and that would be racist. Just because us Asians refer to our elders as “big brother”, “big sister”, “auntie”, “uncle”, etc. That doesn’t necessarily mean we’re related! It’s our culture and our own way of showing respect! (Jesus Christ, it’s like how people say all Asians look alike🙄. If it’s a joke, sure. But if you really think we look the same, well no, we’re not physically alike.) Just because Japan calls China his “big brother” that doesn’t mean they’re both blood related. And shipping Nichu isn’t p*do (however, it will be considered p*do if someone ships China x child!Japan).
I think the same thing can be said to America and England, Spain and Romano, etc. it’s not incest, nor is it p*do to ship them (for me, they’re not related in any way, and it will only be p*do if people ship England x child!America, Spain x chibimano, etc.) But again, this is just my opinion, and people have their own, I know that.
BUT REALLY, WAS IT NECESSARY TO DOXX AND INSULT SOMEONE JUST BECAUSE THEY SAID A HARMLESS OPINION?! JUST BECAUSE THEY DON’T SEE NICHU AND JAPAN AND CHINA AS RELATIVES, THAT DOESN’T MEAN THEY SHIP THEM!
I ship Philippines and Indonesia (I’m not sure if the buff guy is him), they are both Southeast Asians, but they are NOT AND I MEAN NOT RELATED! Honestly, I would be confused and offended if people will tell me that shipping them is wrong because it’s incest.
In this case, imagine China and Japan as roommates, living in the same house, but have separate rooms, but they are not related whatsoever. The house is the East Asian region, and the separate rooms are the independent lands that each country has in real life. Same thing can be said, after the amount of fanart I’ve seen of the Asians together, like one big happy family (I have no problem if people see them as that, but I would just say “no”, that doesn’t mean we’re related. Despite the stereotype that Asians get along and love each other. In real life, there are discourse between those real countries.)
I know some people see them as relatives and that’s fine, just don’t shove it down other people’s throats. Some don’t see them as relatives, but don’t shove that down other people’s throats.
I don’t want to point fingers, but there are so many posts indicating that the ones who bullied @frukmerunning are Westerns. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve met some people from the West and they’re really nice. But what I really hate is that the harassers are the ones that overshadow the good ones, because of so many drama happening in the anime community (and maybe many others).
Listen, just because you guys don’t call your elders with honourifics before their name that much, and think you’re ALWAYS right, and that different cultures (in this case, Asian culture) are “alien” to you, that doesn’t mean you have the right to harass someone, bully them, insult them, and think you’re always the right person in this argument. Because, honestly, what happened in this discourse, makes people like you lower than anyone else. And all cultures are different, people have a different way of living.
Also, isn’t the whole point of Hetalia is to join together, make pasta not war, and just have fun learning each other’s culture and history, because we’re all equal at the end of the day, even though we laugh at each other’s stereotypes. And not being biased on whose culture is “correct” and whose is “wrong”? I literally hoped that this fandom improved and moved on to be better ever since HWS came out, but no, with this whole discourse happening, I’m so disappointed😑😑😑.
I’m gonna ask you guys this: Would you guys do the same thing to Hima? Because he (I’m guessing) doesn’t see all Asian countries (even his own) as blood relatives. How would you feel if someone did the exact same thing to you? People like you seem to enjoy bullying someone, I’m guessing you would love it if someone bullied you too. But I would also like to add, even if @frukmerunning does ship Nichu, that doesn’t give you the right to bully her. That still makes you lower than anyone and you won’t achieve anything, other than shame and regret and a bad portrayal of yourself from other people’s perspectives.
With this whole discourse, I’m beginning to think bullying and disrespect is part of culture too, huh? I guess it’s a lot easier than simply clicking away when you know someone will talk about something you don’t like.

(With this whole discourse, you learned a fact: Asians use honourifics to respect their elders (relative, older friends, etc.) I have friends that are older than me, and I use honourifics. Until I stopped, since my friends don’t mind being called by their names. But just to make sure, learn honourifics if you met someone who’s Asian and older than you, out of respect. (I don’t think Asians are the only ones with honourifics, but I’m just not sure. But correct me on that.)) *sighs* First, people generalize all Asians look the same; second, generalize that the only Asians that exist are China, Japan, and South Korea; and now generalizing that we’re all related????

After All This Time
Summary: You’re Steve’s sister, who fought with him and Bucky during the war, but one day after Bucky’s death, you disappear. Steve believes it’s because your hidden feelings for Bucky. Almost 80 years later, both men see someone long lost from their pasts, and the welcome is not as warm as they both would like.

A/N: So this is my first ever request, so be patient with me, please. The full length request is here: Bucky x reader. Where the avengers are sent to intrude destruction of hydra and shield bases and when they find out who has been doing it they are horrified to see that it is Steve’s little sister who they were forced to leave behind when they went to war. (Y/n went to hydra with the goal being to kill her brother and Bucky for abandoning her and forgetting her)
I changed the request a little, hope the nonnie who requested it is ok with that. I listened to this song while writing it, so here you go. Let me know what you guys think. I might have made a mistake with some of the history/geography things, so feel free to call me out. Love you all so so much.

Steve knew his mission. It was actually fairly easy, easier than the last few missions he had to endure. Buildings associated with both HYDRA and SHIELD were being blown up almost every day. Although neither of the organisations existed anymore, the person or the agency behind these attacks could have easily destroyed valuable material, crucial for Earth’s further development. Moreover, whoever was doing was being reckless and hurt a large number of people in the process.
It’s been going on for almost two weeks. When the first blew up, nobody really cared, thinking it was a coincidence. But by the end of week one, 5 facilities were destroyed. Nobody really cared about the buildings as such, even though they could still serve some purpose in the future, reconstructing them into inhabitable properties.
It was the fifth one in a row which cause the biggest fuss because it was precisely that one in which a few civilians were injured. None of them fatally, but that didn’t matter to the Avengers. Steve and Bucky decided that they could take whoever was doing it on their own, taking a few days away from the whole team to recharge and catch some assholes in the process.
Because they didn’t have any idea who could be behind something like that, destroying buildings of agencies working in direct opposition to each other, they had to calculate their next move. There have been two mishaps, once they thought the destroyers would come to Siberia, HYDRA base near Omsk, but they later found out the people actually blew up HYDRA’s another base, in Kazakhstan. Steve and Bucky knew that SHIELD was next because that has been the pattern for all of the attacks. One HYDRA. One SHIELD. And repeat. But they couldn’t catch them there either.
Their next best guess, based on the trajectory of the attacks, which were all situated in Eastern Europe now, that they wouldn’t want to stray too far from that. There was one particular hidden HYDRA base that Bucky liked for the attack. It wasn’t the best-known location, but the attackers proved that they knew a lot about hidden places. This one was in Georgia, in the Northwest region, because it was excellent political placement. It was extremely close to Russia, but the Georgian government has been more lenient ever since its independence. And because there were still two different sides of revolutionaries fighting against each other, giving HYDRA a perfect hiding place in the midst of it all.
Steve and Bucky were laying on a hilltop, hidden by a bunch of firs, and looking down at the base. It looked just like any bunker, but at a closer look, one realised that it must be massive, because of the door and the construction itself.
They felt like it was a dead-end after another half day, and were close to giving up and telling the rest of the team to come up with a different strategy. But then, from the corner of Bucky’s eye, he saw careful movement. The whole team thought that it must have been at least another team of people, being able to pull something as big as this mission.
But Bucky could see only one, slim person, and from the movement of them, he assumed it must have been a woman. Bucky nudged Steve lightly, and he immediately gave his full attention to the target. They both watched the woman nearing the bunker, but then, as if she could see them, she turned around, faced the hill and crossed her arms.
The men shared a confused look but stayed hidden. They weren’t sure if the girl could really see them or if she was waiting on somebody, just coincidentally turning in the direction of their hideout.
“You know, I can see you, boys. And I’m pretty sure the serums in your bodies are making you hear me. So what do you say, will you come down or should I go up to you?”
As soon as she spoke up, the blood froze in both Bucky’s and Steve’s bodies. They knew that voice, and they both knew it intimately. But it couldn’t have been. No. You were supposed to be dead a long time now. You were supposed to have a normal life and then died peacefully. This wasn’t possible. It was some kind of trick to lure them both out. And by the look on Steve’s face, it was working.
Bucky wanted to stop his friend, but he was in too much shock himself to be able to move. They told him you were dead, that they killed you because he misbehaved.
Steve was the first one down the hill, walking cautiously with his shield in front of him, but fast enough that had there been any mine, he would’ve blown up. But he didn’t care about any of it. If it was right, and he prayed to God every step he took closer to you, that it was, he would’ve been the happiest man on Earth. His little sister.
You were one of the few women admitted in the US Army, the lack of volunteers made the government take few skilled women as well. You always like to fight, being more a guy than Steve used to be pre-serum. You ran around with him and Bucky, always bugging them and tailing them, making your mother sick with worry. You used to be grounded so much that Steve actually thought that you’d never see anything else than the school.
It was a few days after Bucky fell off the wagon that you disappeared, and because Steve knew about your crush on his best friend, he never made too much of it. You were tired and heartbroken, losing who you called the love of your life, even if Bucky didn’t know anything about it. He assumer that you finally had enough left for good for Brooklyn, and you were safe. The whole war was so chaotic that he didn’t really have the time to look into it. And when he woke up, he just assumed you died alongside your husband, or whatever, and that you had a happy life.
But here you were, clear as day.
“What is it, big bro, you look as if you saw a ghost?” You smirked at him, and he took in your appearance entirely. Your hair was much longer than you used to keep it in the 40s, and the right side of your skull was hairless. At a closer look, he could see a shining metal covering where should have been your bone.
“Y/N, what, what are you doing here?” He stuttered, and he could hear someone coming behind him, realising that it’s Bucky, finally getting up and running down to meet you. The look on his face was no less cautious than Steve’s, but a great sorrow was displayed alongside it.
“What does it look like I’m doing, Stevie? I’m making the world a better place, without HYDRA and Shield,” you said, your face and voice completely void of emotions. Steve wanted to run to you and pull you into a bear hug, but the hand on your holster was telling him that it wouldn’t be the best idea he had.
“What happened to you? I thought you left the war and led a happy life. I went into the ice, knowing that you were taken care of.”
You scoffed and rolled your eyes. “You’ve always been the naive one, Stevie. The day I “left”, I was abducted by HYDRA. You were their target, the serum and all of that, but because they couldn’t get to you, they got me. And oh boy, did they have their fun with me. They trained the Winter Soldier and me here side by side, and we were created as a deadly duo, at first. Right, Soldier?” You turned your attention to Bucky this time, and so did Steve, and he could see the hurting all over Bucky’s face.
“Why, why didn’t you tell me when you woke up that my sister was still held captive, Bucky?” Steve asked with disbelief laced in his voice.
Bucky dropped his head between his shoulders, breathing heavily, trying to not let the situation get the better of him. He needed to stay calm and controlled.
“Because they told me she was dead,” Bucky whispered, and if the two people in front of him weren’t superhumans, they would have no chance catching what he said.
“Why are the two of you so trusting, huh? One trusts his instinct to the fault, and the other trusts the organisation making a monster out of him. Wow, you two are extremely stupid, I never realised this.”
Steve and Bucky stayed quiet, knowing that you were right. They automatically believed that you were either safe or dead and moved on, never looking into it.
“That Steve believed such a thing, I’m not surprised. Pissed, sure, but not surprised. But you Bucky? After all, we’ve been through together? How could you just forget all about me so easily?”
You wanted to stay strong, but your voice betrayed you. The little crack made both men look up to you. Bucky could see tears welling up in your eyes, despite you trying to keep your game face on.
“I never forgot, doll. I’ve been thinking about you every single day! They took you away from me, and I never forgave myself for it!” He was screaming now, tears streaming down his face. He always thought that your death was his fault. That he lost you because he was disobedient. Hydra came in after a failed mission, grabbing you by the neck and dragging you away from him. He was in his Winter Soldier mode, he couldn’t feel much, but he knew you were important to him. And when they came back without you, they told him that you were dead because of him. That his failing resulted in your death.
“They did things to me that I never dreamed off in my worst nightmares! And every night I hoped you would remember me and would come barging in the door, saving me. I wasn’t strong enough without you, and the second they realised it, I was just a test bunny for them. All of the things they needed for the new generations of Winter Soldiers, they tested on me.” You were now crying as well, letting your emotions run for the first time in a while.
Steve was so confused that his brows couldn’t furrow any more. He was looking between the two of you, both crying and shaking with all the bottled up emotions.
“They tried to breed us, you know, Stevie? They told us we would be the perfect specimen, so they had us out of the Winter Soldier mode for a while, letting us be humans and breed. But when it wouldn’t happen for months, they used some kind of chemicals to prevent us from ever running away and trying on our own.”
“And we fell in love during those time,” Bucky whispered sadly.
“Obviously not enough for you to fight for me,” you said bitterly and turned around from them, wiping your tears away.
“You were the two I could always count on, or at least I thought so, and when I realised that I was all alone, it broke me. I got free from Hydra and roamed the Earth, trying to do some good with the powers I acquired. But then I saw you in New York, Steve, fighting the alien ships, all glorious and famous. And then Germany happened, and I realised that both of you were alive and that neither of you ever looked for me.
So I made a straightforward plan, destroying both the agency that built me and the one that created you, Steve. I hope they would send both of you, so we could have some fun one last time.”
Bucky made a step towards you, but you quickly pulled out a little device, which looked like a detonator. Neither of you stood close enough to the bunker for the explosion to hurt you, but the boys still didn’t want to risk anything.
“I wanted to see you one last time. I thought I’d kill us all, but seeing the two of you,” you scoffed a little at your own emotions, “I can’t do that. I love you two too much, I might be a ruthless killer, but I can’t hurt my boys, however stupid they are.”
“What are you talking about, Y/N? Don’t talk about death when we just found you.” Steve pleaded with you, his face constricted in pain.
You smiled and took the few steps that were between you and hugged him tightly. “I’m in so much pain, Stevie, and no matter what, it will never go away. The things they did to me and the things that I did… I can’t move on. But I love you, even if I hated you for the longest time. Be brave and do good, big brother.” You whispered against his cheek and kissed him lightly.
You then stepped away and looked at Bucky, who looked like he might blow up from all the tension in his body.
“You. Forgive yourself for everything. You are a good guy in the core, I know that for a fact. I’ve always loved you even if I blamed you for a lot that happened to me. I’m sorry, James. You’ll be fine, you got that punk right here, and you two can tackle anything that will come your way.”
You kissed his lips, remembering the feeling of his plump lips against yours. You were meant to be, but the fate hated the two of you and didn’t want to let you be happy.
You smiled at them sadly, and before they could react, you sprinted towards the bunker and pushed the button in your hand, and for a split second, you finely felt free.
The scene left behind you was heartbreaking. Both men were crying hysterically on their knees, flames licking around them, but they didn’t see nor feel them. They just felt the anguish inside their souls, losing you once again. They both hoped that a new era was starting, the three of you together again, but it was ripped away from them again, and this time, there was no turning back.

My matryoshka theory

So. I’ll start right from the top, so as not to miss anything, and will pull this theory forward by strings, so hold on with me, seeing as I don’t know how much of the knowledge on which this theory is based is considered to be common knowledge.
So, let’s start from the beginning. Grrm is fairly well-known for his kill-the-main-character kind of trope (yes, I’m going to take this from beginning-beginning, but this is important so bear with me). He’s been famously criticized for this choice, and to the critics, he has said that even though he kills the main characters, their lines/narratives/arcs don’t just randomly disappear with those murders (so, the deconstruction of the most well-known trope is deserved, grrm argues) - those lines are being inherited or being passed to another character who absorbs the narrative of his predecessor.
Let’s look at this through the narrative of the character who has been first victim of this trope, and who’s death (arguably) is one of the most important/purest in establishing the rules by which grrm deconstructs the trope. Ned Stark.
-I’ll hide the rest bc this is growing to be a monster -
Ahead I present you a matryoshka narrative theory.
So Ned’s line - he goes to the South in order to uncover the plot of Arryn’s murder. He uncovers that Robert’s children are not his legitimate heirs, but Jaime’s, which’s why Jon Arryn’s been murdered, and same happens to Ned Stark. So even though (famously) Ned Stark is the reason why the rebellion for Northern independency has begun, Ned himself never wished to set that particular line in motion, never had that goal in himself. But - his work undermined the power of the person who sits on the Iron Throne after Robert’s death. So Ned discovered that the “official” heir to Robert isn’t an actual heir.
This is also grrm and so there are actually some pretty cool moments in which the continuation is foreshadowed - Robert mentions that Ned should’ve sat on the throne, the rebellion against the crowd itself ended well for Baratheons who got the throne, but Starks got nothing (redistribution towards fairness is something that grrm surprisingly tries to do in his story).
Robb Stark who has begun his rebellion, first in the name of his father/demanding freedom to his father+sisters, after Ned’s death has inherited Ned’s line, and continued it - saying that Joffrey isn’t the King for the North. And now, comes the most important part of my matryoshka theory. Even though the real matryoshka dolls get smaller with their uncovering, it is grrm and so the narrative doesn’t get smaller, but each new doll as it opens up gets bigger. Robb Stark, quite naturally, grows that narrative out - and Northern Independence gets added to the line. (So if it isn’t Joffrey, who is the King for the North? Answer gets clear, Northerns can’t support neither Renly, nor Stannis, it must be a Stark).
Next, Robb’s clear heir is Jon, we know it - the books had Robb officially establishing Jon as his heir, and TV-series already hailed Jon as KITN.
How much can we trust the TV-show? Well, obviously lots of changes, but I think some big plotlines were given by grrm and had to be hit - Bran will be King, North will get independence and Sansa will be the Queen in the North. And Jon will be, for a time, a King in the North. (I don’t, by the way, believe how Battle for the Dawn was depicted - like I don’t necessarily believe that this is the way in which it will go, and Arya might not be Azor Ahai, though I’d really like that, I rather really like the idea that Bran is the Night King, y’kno, but that’s not for here…)
So, Jon is Robb’s heir, and he will inherit also Robb’s line, which at this moment is Northern Independence.
This kind of narrative line, which will get with every heir more complicated, and in which every heir will add something to the line, I think will continue with Jon, and subsequently with Sansa (considering the she ends being QITN, she is the natural heir to the Northern Independency narrative). My prediction is that Jon will add another thing to the ~Stark against the Throne/North line~ - he will add the wildings line. (TV-series definitely didn’t explore that, but I think grrm will explore something through wildings - Jon who’s lived with them, Jon who fell for one of them and could even become their king, those things aren’t some empty promises, they lead somewhere). Perhaps Jon will establish North as even greater region (esp. considering that the wall will fall) - it will be North all the way through the wild region.
And now - I consider Sansa to be the true/last heir to that narrative (established and cannoned in TV-series), so what will she add? In my opinion she will be a needed/healing link for North - she will be the person who will at long last establish good relationships with Six Kingdoms (basically established in TV-series), she will end the war between two regions through her connection to both of them. While her predecessors have ripped North away from 7K, she will heal the relationship between the torn regions - while recognizing the need for Independence, she will also recognize the need to stop the war, this is why she is the most ~Southern~ of Starks, her Southerness is important for the North. (Appearance wise, it is a bit interesting, too. In this line we have Ned, first, who looks Northern - and he begins by undermining Southern King in the South; second Robb, who looks Southern - who will start Northern Independence; and the two last ones will flip out the established routine, Jon, who looks most Northern, will add further North to the North line, and Sansa, who looks most Southern, will establish good relationship with the South).
But what is truly cool about this narrative, I write it as I realize it, is that it isn’t some thing that has only the big line in it - Northern Independence, but it has some consequences to the characters themselves and the way in which their lines will progress. And what I mean by that, is that Jon, for example, has struggled to identify himself - he feels a bastard, he tries to establish himself as a brother of the Night’s Watch, becomes a wildings, a lord, he has a chance to become a King of free folk, he declines the chance to be Lord Stark, he will become Targaryen and through it a Southerner, and heir to the Iron Throne, it is a big theme for Jon, the person, - the self-search. The fact that he will be an heir to this line, will either form another question which he will have to resolve for himself - is he the true Stark? Is he the King in the North, after all, or will this become yet another identity which he will try, but that won’t fit him either. I still don’t know what the show’s finale actually meant for Jon - he won’t be, after all, a King in the North, no more than he will be King of Six Kingdoms. Maybe it will be a modern way of grrm establishing that after all, we aren’t meant to be heirs to our identity, getting them from our parents or our guardians, but are meant to establish them ourselves, and this is why, after all searches, he will be a brother of night’s watch. So this self-search will end in realization that we can’t search for who we are, but we have to make choices as to who we will be. Jon’s first choice is the one most important in establishing him as a person. It of course, will require another choice for Jon - he will have to choose Night’s Watch again in the end. It will also be important because for Jon it was actually a very important dream of his - to be his father’s true son, to be Robb’s true brother, to be real protector of Sansa, because she, too, is his sister. For him to be in this line, will be healing for him, and maybe, even more important, is that he will also be able to leave that dream behind him, to have a chance at becoming a true Stark, but choosing to be Jon.
But what is also cool is that to the second most important question of the show (after - who is the best ruler? the answer’s Bran and everything he symbolizes), the - who is the true Stark? (and everything that symbolizes), the answer is - Sansa. And it means a lot to Sansa, the character - who, too, struggled with self-identity (Joffrey’s bride, little bird, Lannister, Alayne, that grey girl?). She will remember that she is a true Stark (ahh let’s imagine a Lion King moment - Remember who you are! will tell her Ned Stark reminding her to kill Littlefinger), but it is even more important to the readers, who fell for Starks above all else, and everything Starks are meant to be - the good family, good morals, perseverance, connection to the nature and culture (First People), inner strength in the face of hardships, survival, etc, for all of the readers who fell for Starks, the answer as to who is the grandest of Starks, who is the true Stark, the answer is - the little girl who dreams, who falls in love and cares for songs and chivalry.
So, not only this narrative explores the grand theme of the plot - North region, it also explores the identities of the characters, but also through that quest establishes some important answers for the readers - that we choose our identities, that there is a great source of strength in dreaming and being kind, through the fact that the heir to the harshest/strongest line is a kind, sensitive girl.
So this is what my tag has been about - “A pretty cool matryoshka-type of narrative in which literally Ned and Robb are literally pulled apart to give way to their heirs”. This is the narrative. And they are literally pulled apart and from it springs their heir.
What I meant by other tags is that similar narrative lines have concluded in some other surviving Starks. For example, the most important question of the show is - who is the best ruler?, explored through Ned Stark, Tyrion, Robert, Stannis, Daenerys, Robb, Jon, Renly, Tywin and the answer to it turned out to be Bran. (!)
I think that Caitlyn’s line is the another important theme for the show/book. It is well known for it’s cruelty, for it’s savageness, explored through (long before Caitlyn) Joffrey, Ramsay and his father, Cersei, Tywin, Mountain, Daenerys will fall here. Caitlyn’s line will establish her as another terror of war - that sometimes the most savage/terrible of the characters are not necessarily bad (like Joffrey and Ramsay). I do think that Caitlyn’s consequent murders will become so graphic and terrible that they will be comparable to Joffrey and Ramsay’s. Plus - a lot of crimes do get committed for the religion and Arya from her little (cult) trip will be an answer to that, too. Arya will inherit and be the last in the line of cruel people, the little girl who’s seen terrors of war, and we will be forced to question just where exactly does the line of good and bad people lie (tv were too cowardly to explore that). Plus - Arya is probably the younger, more beautiful queen from Cersei’s prophecy (Cersei will grow uglier bc of something, this how Arya will be more beautiful, or Arya will pull the face of Lyanna or some other face), she’s been near enough in the show, too, during Cersei’s death, so she is also the heir to Cersei’s line - the cruelty and madness, where it begins and what can we do with it? And I think (though this is one of the under-developed thoughts) that the answer to the theme of cruelty and madness and crimes of war will not only become an answer to that plot, but to Arya herself, and through her - an answer to the readers.
Anyhow, I think, that’s enough, it is already a monster, but please go on asking me about my theories, because this’s been f.u.n.! (ask me about Weasley twins if you’re hp fan)

Jo considers Ed a dorky brother or cousin and often orients herself in competition with him, taking every opportunity to tease. She prides herself on her independence from him and often hazes him for his emotional repression, but she’s also quite fond of him and still depends on him from time to time.
Fort McMurray / Mac
Although Jo and Mac are close friends who both claim to be gateways to the North and rarely run out of conversation (or memes), they are quite distant from each other and typically end up mediated through Ed. Jo also considers Mac almost like family; while she often talks herself up, she also understands the hardships of his work and isolation and rarely truly crosses a line with him.
Calgary / Calvin
Jo thinks of Calvin with a little bit of smug disdain as he represents everything negative about big city softness; while she is sensitive about her own remoteness, she will not hesitate to take Calvin down a peg. The two do share a zeal for hospitality and a little bit of danger, however, and Calvin often pleasantly surprises her.
Red Deer / Red
Jo thinks its a real shame that she and Red aren’t neighbours since they both have similar experiences feeling left out and underappreciated. When they do see each other, they could easily spend an entire day commiserating and collaborating over take-out or work-outs.
Lethbridge / Lilith
Josephine tends to perceive Lilith as a little old fashioned and perhaps a little too laid back for someone of her stature in the province. Jo knows Lilith is capable of letting loose a little, she just hasn’t quite figured out the circumstances under which Lilith lets her hair down.
Medicine Hat / Madeline
Josephine and Madeline are total opposites in more than geography. Jo tends to be impatient and stubborn where Madeline is passive and pensive, and thus gets easily frustrated with her and defensive over her own way of doing things. However, they represent similarly sized cities and may have a lot to learn from each other.
Banff / Eleanor
Jo and Eleanor cross paths a little less due to Jo’s preference for vacations in Jasper, but the two get on quite well. They both share a zeal for thrills, but Josephine usually makes Eleanor look like the responsible one.
Other Relationships
Josephine is very proud of her role as a conduit between the Peace Region and is absolutely thrilled to take her friends from BC and the Territories shopping and sight-seeing in the city and around the county. She and Peace River also go way back, of course.
Jo is also close to Jasper, who is like her big sister.

“If you read his diary, all will be explained...”
Joe Orton was an English playwright known for his scandalous black comedies. They shocked, outraged, and amused audiences. His style was so distinctive that “Ortonesque” was coined to describe similar dark and farcical works.
He was born in Leicester, England (about 100 miles northwest of London). In 1949 he grew interested in acting and joined several local theater companies, then applied to and was accepted for the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
While attending RADA in 1951, he met fellow student Kenneth Halliwell and they quickly became friends, then roommates and lovers. After graduating, they both did stints in regional theater but eventually settled into a small flat where they wrote (both solo and together). They lived off money Halliwell inherited, and only worked when they had to, living frugally in between.
With that much time on their hands, they eventually got up to no good. Orton and Halliwell would take books from the library and doctor the covers with other photos (often rude) then secretly place then back in the library. For instance, a book of poetry was doctored with a photo of a nearly naked, tattooed man on the cover. In 1962 they were caught and prosecuted for damaging 70 books, sentenced to six months in prison and a fine of £262.
They felt the sentence was too harsh for the crime “because we were queers”. But the time in prison, away from Halliwell, gave Orton the ability to become creative independently. It also refined his view of society.
“It affected my attitude towards society. Before, I had been vaguely conscious of something rotten somewhere; prison crystallised this. The old whore society really lifted up her skirts and the stench was pretty foul… Being in the nick brought detachment to my writing. I wasn’t involved anymore. And suddenly it worked.”
Soon after, Orton was hired to write a radio play for the BBC, which got him noticed. The first of his best-known works, “Entertaining Mr. Sloane” was a play about a middle-aged brother and sister who vie for the attentions of Sloane, a hustler and male prostitute.
With "Sloane" a hit in the West End, Orton began work on “Loot” - a story about two young thieves who hide bank loot in a coffin belonging to the mother of one of them. Things get complicated and bizarre when an over-zealous Water Inspector arrives to investigate. A black farce, the play lampoons death, the police, religion, and justice. “Loot” struggled initially but it too became a hit.
Meanwhile, Kenneth Halliwell felt neglected. He'd helped Orton edit and shape the plays, even adding line and plot suggestions, but he never got public acknowledgement from Orton.
Complicating the situation, Orton frequently had sex outside the relationship, often cruising parks and public bathrooms for pickups, and even hiring rent boys when they went on vacation. All of which Orton wrote about in his diary. In one entry he wrote about a blond conquest: “He had a softness about his body that wasn’t the softness of a woman. I hoped he would let me fuck him.“
This did nothing to help Halliwell’s ego because he was overweight, wore a toupee, and was seven years older than the 34-year-old Orton. Halliwell became increasingly depressed and argumentative.
But Orton was on a high and may not have noticed. He was approached by the Beatles to write a movie to follow up “Help”. He completed his next major work “What the Butler Saw” in July 1967.
Orton would never see the play produced. A month later, he was killed by Halliwell with nine blows to the head with a hammer. Halliwell then committed suicide by drug overdose. Halliwell left a suicide note:

“What the Butler Saw” eventually became a big hit as well. Author John Lahr used Orton’s diary as the basis of a biography: “Prick up Your Ears” was published in 1978. A 1987 film based on the book starred Gary Oldman as Orton and Alfred Molina as Halliwell.
