Helena and Caleb have been busy burying the hatchet and starring in their new hit sitcom. Currently accepting theme song submissions!
Clue card designed by @surely-sims! I thought it would be a cute detail to add. 🥰
Previous / Next
Caleb: Miss Scarlett with the dagger in the lounge.
Helena: Are you sure you’re not just describing your sister on a bad day?
Caleb: Oh, you mean every day?
Helena: Speak of the devil and she shall appear.
[canned audience laughter]
Helena: Regrettably, Miss Scarlett is out of contention. My turn!
-
Helena: Caleb, look! Poor little thing. Where did you come from?
Caleb: More importantly, how is it still alive? Animals don’t have a tendency to thrive around here, wild or domesticated.
Helena: She’s a girl! We should keep her!
Caleb: Lilith would hate it. She might even…
Helena: Lilith will not touch a hair on her body! [in baby voice] I’m going to name you Drusilla.
Caleb: Hold on. Is that a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reference?
Helena: Oh, well, I went down this research rabbit hole after… you know. It may have included a Simflix binge. Is it forbidden media now?
Caleb: Of course not! [sheepish but excited] I actually have the full series box set upstairs. Should we…
Helena: HELL YEAH, WE SHOULD!
Helena: Drusilla, come back! Don’t you want to meet your namesake?
Lilith: Disgusting little goblin. What particularly loathsome circle of hell did you claw your way out of?
[canned audience laughter]

Jester follows Caleb in, dutifully, loyally, ready to fight on his behalf, of course. Of course. And Fjord balks, a little, everyone hesitates, for a moment. But she was always going to go in. She was always going to go in. How could they let Caleb go in there alone, facing Trent, facing his undead parents? Facing his worst fear, his worst guilts, his worst enemies. She follows him in.
How could they let Caleb go in there alone? With just his parents, with Trent. With just his parents, almost the same but not quite, speaking and moving, with Trent and his poison honeyed words. Facing his worst guilt, and a twisted form of forgiveness, and something he has been aching for but cannot have. She follows him in, because she loves him, because she wants to protect him, because shes sorry he has to face this. Because she. Is sorry.
She follows him in, because Jester is always willing to do what is needed to protect the people that are hers. Jester is always willing to do what she has to do to protect her people, whatever that looks like.
Jester follows him in, and looks at him and says- I'm so sorry. And casts Turn Undead.

i am BEGGING someone to ask essek and astrid how they know one another and instead of them being like "yeah we're bitter rivals, he's kryn, she's dwendalian, we're both wizards who were formerly evil but tried to be better (kinda), opposing sides of the wars, traitors to our people" or whatever, one of them is just like "yeah i'm fucking her ex-boyfriend/yeah he's fucking my ex" or something else cunty like that please it would be so funny

Okay but I need to know what the people who have only watched c3 think about Beau and Caleb because I've been rotating them in my head for three years too long to be objective anymore but like. Getting to see them through the eyes of a new party just reminded me that even though so much of our delight in C2 was focused around the constant indignity of the Nein, they are objectively a flickering metronome between "how the fuck are these people alive" and "this is the most hyper competent group of mercenaries I've ever seen" and I just. Do they know. Do they know that Beau is so fucking cool. Are there people who learned these two npcs have a whole campaign and want to learn more about them. I look at these two and see a montage of tiefling dicks and red eyes and promising to kill the other if something goes wrong. I see Caleb smearing mud and bat shit on Beau's face and Beau just resigned even as she makes the most aggrieved and annoyed sounds, Beau hauling Caleb's dissociated ass over her own skinny shoulder and walking him to safety. I look at them and see 500 hours and more of the empire siblings. The weeks and months they spent going from hating the parts of themselves they saw in each other to loving in the other what they still struggled with in themselves. I see chosen siblings, best friends. What do other people see?

of the many injustices put forth toward the show by fans i think the most overall damaging and telling of a complete lack of critical viewership is the idea that sam riegel builds his characters with nothing more than the bit in mind. like you are only telling on yourself if you think characters like scanlan shorthalt and veth brennato are one-dimensional and depthless

Thinking about Caleb and how so much of his story ends with him finding meaning in the temporary.
He spent so long chasing a way to bring his parents back, but in the end he had to accept that they were gone. They were temporary. He has his memories of them now, but that’s all. And he has to find peace with that and find a way to remember them fondly, even though they’re gone now, truly and completely.
He and Essek love each other dearly, but there will come a day when he will have lived his life and grown old and Essek will still be Essek. But even so, every moment they spend together is still meaningful. Even if it ends, it means something.
Just. Caleb and loving things even when they won’t last. Maybe because they won’t last.

Listen, listen, l i s t e n, Hunter's been tormented more than enough, but I've had this persistent gut feeling since Eclipse Lake that Hunter's gonna be face to face with another grimwalker at some point.
Belos says in Clouds On The Horizon that he wouldn't make another grimwalker unless the current one has been "Dealt with"
And the last time he sees Hunter, he looks like...this. Unconscious and definitely not breathing.
Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results, why wouldn't he give it another go? He's already done it countless times before.

Who wants some Vatore lore? 👀
The library is Caleb's sanctuary. Most of the other gaudy, expensive crap in the house is Lilith's, but this is the one space he refuses to let her touch, as it's where he spends most of his time pursuing his many creative endeavors (he's had about a century to pick up a talent or twelve). His bedroom is more spartan, and it's where all the "shabby" furniture has been relegated, but he doesn't mind. It's also where he indulges his guilty pleasure of watching campy vintage horror movies. Lilith thinks pop culture is a cesspool, so he keeps this activity strictly to his secret "man cave" (Lilith's derisive way of describing it), but that doesn't stop her from giving him shit for it anyway.
But Lilith has her own guilty pleasure in the form of trashy romance novels, so she's hardly one to judge (plus, you know, there's all the ruthless killing and stuff).
