i’m not over how some people refer to Flowers for Algernon as just the sad mouse book when the entire thing is about the struggle of a man with a mental disability trying to become smarter (or Normal) because his entire life he has been viewed as less than human by nearly everyone around him, or if he’s seen as human at all, he’s seen as a child.
sometimes people don’t even remember his name.

UNRELIABLE NARRATORS; SIDE A
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Johnny Traunt Propaganda:
He literally tells us he’s a liar / storyteller in the first couple of chapters. He edits other people’s manuscripts without giving a hint as to what exactly he’s edited, so you have to figure it out yourself and then second guess whether you’re right or wrong. He claims to just be an idiot junkie and then you find out in his mother’s letters to him that he’s fluent in Latin, won academic scholarships, and writes poetry. In the end he writes a happy ending for himself and then tells us it was bullshit and then tells us another, slightly less happy (but still surprisingly good) ending and you have to just. Sort of decide on your own whether that one was legit or not.
Charlie Gordon Propaganda:
the book is written informally like a journal. he undergoes a series of experiments to increase his intelligence and as he becomes smarter and more aware of the world his writing style totally changes and his perception of people around him get shaken up. you kind of have to read between the lines to get what's actually happening vs how charlie perceives it

i don’t care what anyone says about it,
flowers for algernon by daniel keyes changed my brain chemistry at the age of 13 and i will never recover
(spoilers below the cut read the fucking book NOW)
i think it’s terrifyingly beautiful in inexplicable ways. i still think about how beautiful it truly is to learn and experience new things. I really begin to understand when I’m given this perspective of a man who is given such a short amount of time to really live life as he’d wanted, and struggling to cram all that time into a couple months to make it last. and to some degree, that piece of fiction reflects onto reality as well. life is fleeting and we have such little time to do..everything. it’s even impossible.
another thing, i loved the last few chapters despite how gut wrenching it was to read. Charlie is losing all of his knowledge and is desperately trying to retain it. until eventually, he accepts it. he accepts the reality of his situation and almost comes to peace with it. So what does he do? He appreciates what he had, he appreciates that he was able to experience and learn things that he didn’t know even existed previously.
there are so many aspects to appreciate in this book and life itself, I could really go on for hours.
anyways book analysis coming soon (no it’s not i have several missing assignments to do)

Connections Between "Flowers for Algernon" and "The Perks of Being a Wallflower"
I am not aware of any intentional connections between these two books regarding the role of Stephen Chbosky and his writing of "The Perks of Being a Wallflower". However, seeing that these are my current two favorite books, I couldn't resist noticing some of the connections between the books.
1.) Both books are in the form of journal entries. These types of books are so good if written correctly and it's so easy to connect to a character when you cans see their thought processes and emotions as they retell an experience from their perspective. It is also interesting to think about other perspectives of other characters throughout the book. Not to mention, these types of books are easy to read very quickly.
2. Both characters share the same first name and struggle with mental illness. Although both ailments are vastly different, we see how they are both treated by outsiders and how their relationships with others as well as the outside world are affected by their mental illnesses. Both struggle with the repression of memories and come to discover the hidden experiences of their childhoods.
Both books are very very beautifully written and if you haven't read these classics, give them a try !!

Flowers For Algernon
(spoilers? maybe? just don't risk it and scroll)
this is going to be a lazier review than that of what i usually post. i read flowers for algernon today it was a book that one of my english teachers in high school had reccomended to me, and after doing a little research on the book, it seemed like something i would like. i opted for the novel version, not the short story. the themes really reminded me of a clockwork orange, but a bit more in-your-face about the whole "you can't change someone's god given nature" thing. i'm super drained from reading all day and having covid so i do not have the energy to elaborate, so source: trust me.
anyway, i found the book to be quite powerful and moving, also super sad. i like the way it's written, im new to books that read in the format of journal entries. i found charlie's reccolection of the dissociation between "old charlie" and "smart charlie," as well as the window he sits and watches in to be a great tool to view his development through.
if you want to read this, i got the kindle unlimited version for free because of the free trial they offer. i'm trying to read as many books as i can before it runs out so suggestions are very appreciated!

Henry vs. Spencer
Yeah Spencer provoked Henry…
Spencer afterwards felt like the brake van in the flying kipper.
