Heh heh. Found a visa gift card that had a higher balance than I'd remembered it having. Just placed an order for three more packets of seeds for this year. Will be trying out Fava beans and Chinese broccoli, which I've never grown before, as well as a packet of bok choy (which I was out of).
Now I just need to see if I have any more row cover in the shed. The cabbage worms were terrible last year and though the chickens loved it, I would like to eat some of the cole crops this year. I wonder if tulle would work? I think I have some lengths of that in the crafting supplies...

3/3/24 ~ Random Chinese Broccoli plants. This pot was one I did a random seed mixture in and nothing ever really came of it. Well, my Chinese Broccoli plants that I had growing in the two pots beside this one flowered & died awhile back. I assume their seed went into this container & now I have 2 more plants! 😆
I’ll have to figure out a recipe using this & post it for y’all 💞🍽️

One of my favorite things in the spring is to take a little daily tour around the garden just to see what seeds have sprouted, what plants have started to bloom, what made it through the winter, etc. and so forth. And while you're there, maybe pulling up a few weedlings before the take hold (looking at you tiny maple and elm trees), removing box elder bug eggs from the strawberries, and pushing the mulch back away from tender stems. Puttering, essentially.
So today the Chinese broccoli has sprouted in its earthbox:
I'll thin them out later. Got them planted far too late, but it's supposed to be a heat-resistant variety so. Probably should get a row cover over them too, given the cabbage moths.

And here's some borage poking up through the mulch. I've got a few in the earthboxes, but mostly I planted the seed around the fava beans since it can apparently handle part-shade. Planted mostly for the bees and it's supposed to aggressively self-seed which would actually be nice in this location.

A few beets have survived from the initial sowing two months or so ago. They struggled but have finally put on about 4" of growth. I sowed the baby corn in the empty spots of the row. We'll see if we get decent root formation. I put in two rows in a raised bed in back, but it was old seed and hasn't sprouted yet.

One of my earthboxes full of overwintered peppermint. It's nearly time for the first harvest of the year, it's been growing so well with the warmer temps this spring and the much more plentiful rain. Also I put it in full sun this year instead of part-shade. It does well in either, but is more prolific in more sun, of course.

And here's one of my plant splurges this spring (made possible by the price of an new a/c unit dropping by 50%). A honeysuckle vine to grow up and over one of the chicken runs. It was only a foot tall when I bought it and now it's nearly 6 foot, so it's looking good for accomplishing the goal of beautification and shade. I have another vine in a different part of the garden, but it's nearly 20 years old and has been pretty thoroughly shaded out now--impossible to dig up and move successfully. I have a trumpet vine climbing one of the mature silver maples that has a base as big around as my forearm. It attracts a bevy of hummingbirds every year, so this honeysuckle vine will be an additional attraction for them. I'll replace the baling twine supports with something a little more aesthetic (or at least less noticeable) soonish.
