“That one never sleeps” — Napoleon mentioned in John Quincy Adams’ diary
Tumblr media
Pictured: The Elephant of the Bastille. Commissioned by Napoleon. It was supposed to be made of bronze, but only a plaster full-scale model was built.
Between diplomatic appointments, John Quincy Adams met his wife and son in Paris. He was at leisure, passing time as he wrote in his diary “as agreeably as any part of my life.” By happenstance, the visit of Adams coincided with the return of Napoleon from Elba, called the Hundred Days, which ended with his defeat at Waterloo. In his diary entry of March 28, 1815, Adams mentions a chat with the doorkeeper of the elephant, who told him that 200 men once worked on the job, but now, under Louis XVIII (the restored Bourbon monarch), only 7 or 8. With Napoleon’s return, said the doorkeeper, work on the fountain would resume “because that one doesn’t sleep” (car celui-là ne dort pas). The artist was unable to persuade the government, when the monarchy returned, that the elephant had naught to do with Bonaparte. It figures in Victor Hugo’s masterpiece Les Misérables when a ruthless crook occupies it and, showing a loving heart, shelters a street urchin. The basin remains today.
— Aaron Burr in Exile: A Pariah in Paris, 1810-1811, by Jane Merrill and John Endicott, pp. 99
—————
Adams’ diary entry, date: 28 March 1815
We rode round upon the Boulevards to the Porte St. Antoine; and visited the works, at the Canal de l’Oureq and the colossal Elephant to be erected in Bronze, for a public fountain on the spot where the Bastille formerly stood— The model in clay is under a shed—it is 55 feet high, and 45 feet long— In a separate chamber, shewn to us by the door keeper, as a special favour, there is a small model in clay, marked out in pieces, as the great bronze original work is to be cast— He told us that there had been formerly two hundred workmen constantly employed upon it— That while the king was here, it was almost abandoned—not more than seven or eight men kept at work. Now it would be resumed Car celui la ne dort pas, and in two years the work would be completed.

Oh, tomorrow we’ll read the elephant chapter! Many years ago, it served as my introduction to Les Misérables. When I was barely older than the elder of the two young Thénardiers (around eight or nine years old), we had to read it in school. I recall being quite traumatized by it: poor children, and poor cat eaten by rats. The only thing that immensely impressed me was the idea of the elephant in which one could live! And when I revisited the book in a more appropriate age, I was impressed once again – this time, I was moved to tears by this passage: “It seemed as though the miserable old mastodon, invaded by vermin and oblivion, covered with warts, with mould, and ulcers, tottering, worm-eaten, abandoned, condemned, a sort of mendicant colossus, asking alms in vain with a benevolent look in the midst of the crossroads, had taken pity on that other mendicant, the poor pygmy, who roamed without shoes to his feet, without a roof over his head, blowing on his fingers, clad in rags, fed on rejected scraps. That was what the elephant of the Bastille was good for.” I like every description of the elephant in this chapter, but this one is my favourite! And then, while pursuing my PhD, I read "Citizens" by Simon Schama, where the elephant served as the opening symbol in the extensive narrative about the French Revolution. I just feel that this elephant is an important part of my life!

Complaints coming to you from 1862
Many of the first reviewers of Les Misérables complained that the title was uncouth, overdramatic, and misleading but in his Étude sur les Misérables de M. V. Hugo, Félix Courtat took it a step further, complaining that the chapter titles themselves offended his sensibilities. He wrote that he reproached Victor Hugo for his choice in chapter titles because:
They seem calculated to sell books by searching to stimulate the curiosity of buyers rather than coming from an austere writer who only thinks of instructing them. I will only cite two examples among many others.
1. “Little Gavroche Takes Advantage of Napoleon le Grand.” This means that a gamin of Paris choses to live in the elephant of the place de la Bastille.
2. “In Which an Agent of the Police Gives Two Punches to a Lawyer.” This means that he gives him two pocket pistol.
The reason that the second example upsets him is because of the pun on “coups de poing,” the thing that the agent of police is said to give the lawyer. That word can either mean a punch but also a type of gun. Several reviewers I have found disliked Hugo’s use of puns.  You can read Courtat’s meticulous account of everything he disliked in Les Misérables here, or you can read my English translation here.

Patron-Minette’s Paris
I thought I would compile a handy reference sheet of all the locations we see the Patron-Minette and their affiliates (both formal and informal) at different points of the novel. The 1832 map that I used can be found at this website— the site was really accessible and has a handy tool that lets you compare this old map directly to a modern-day map of Paris by overlaying.
Anyway, without further ado, here is the map featuring all geographic information relating to the Patron-Minette. Please expand this post to see the corresponding list of location names and find out what happens at each location. At the end of this post, you can also find a “short note” where I dissect and speculate some of the movements during the sections of the novel that centre around La Force specifically.
Tumblr media
Click for higher quality and ability to zoom in on each numbered point. Sorry that I can’t make the image any clearer!
MEETING POINT
1. The ‘wasteland’ that adjoins La Salpêtrière; The location where the Patron-Minette assemble at nightfall and plan their heists.
GORBEAU AMBUSH
2. Gorbeau Hovel [estimated location]; Within this building exists the Thénardier (Jondrette) family lodgings— the location where the Gorbeau ambush takes place.
3. Rue de la Barrière des Gobelins; Here Marius spots Thénardier talking to Panchaud ahead of the Gorbeau ambush on the evening on February 3rd 1832.
4. Rue de Petit-Banquier; Behind a very low wall in the middle of this street Marius spots Brujon and Demi-Liard discussing the Gorbeau ambush, just five hours before it goes ahead.
PRISONS
5. La Force; The jail where Babet, Gueulemer, Brujon, Panchaud, Demi-Liard, Boulatruelle, and Thénardier are imprisoned after the failed Gorbeau ambush.
6. La Salpêtrière; A prison and ‘hospital’ where Babet’s mistress is locked up during the Spring of 1832. The location housed both “insane”, “hysterical” women and prostitutes behind its walls.
7. Les Madelonnettes; Formerly a convent, this facility was turned into a prison during the French Revolution. In 1832, Azelma and Éponine Thénardier are locked up here after the failed Gorbeau ambush.
8. La Conciergerie; A courthouse with an adjoining jail. In early April 1832, Babet was transported to this facility from La Force, but he managed to escape from the police en route.
RUE PLUMET
9. Rue Plumet [estimated location]; Located in the old Faubourg Saint-Germain district, this is the site where Valjean and Cosette live. It is here that Éponine faces off against the Patron-Minette on 3rd June 1832.
INFORMAL AFFILIATES: GAVROCHE, THE MÔMES, AND MAGNON
10. The Bastille Elephant; Gavroche’s ‘house’.
11. Quai des Célestins; The street where Magnon used to live.
12. Rue Clocheperce; After obtaining the two youngest Thénardier boys, Magnon moved to this street as a means of changing her identity. The comedic closeness of Magnon’s two lodgings is certainly not lost on Hugo and he explains as such: ‘In Paris, the identity which binds an individual to himself is broken between one street and another’ (Hapgood translation)
13. Rue des Ballets; On this street corner Gavroche and the mômes encounter Montparnasse the evening before the Patron-Minette’s escape from La Force.
CHARACTER SPECIFIC HAUNTS
14. Arche-Marion sewer [estimated location]; Gueulemer‘s hideout.
15. Square du Temple; According to Thénardier, Babet, amongst his other trades, had been an old-clothes broker at the Temple.
16. Barricade between Rue de la Chanvrerie and Rue Mondétour; The location where Le Cabuc/Claquesous shoots a porter and is executed by Enjolras. After being killed, his body is flung over the small barricade on Rue Mondétour.
17. Austerlitz village; It is in this general location where Gavroche witnesses Montparnasse’s attempt to attack Valjean in early April.
18. Gaîté theatre; Brujon and Demi-Liard watch a melodrama at this location on 2nd February 1832, the evening before the Gorbeau ambush.
19. Panthèon; Kruideniers is said to patrol and live in this general area.
20. Val-de-Grâce; Glorieux is said to patrol and live in this general area.
21. Barrière de Grenelle; Barrecarrosse is said to patrol and live in this general area.
A short note: Mapping La Force
Tumblr media
THE ILLOGICAL TRANSFER OF BRUJON’S CORRESPONDENCE ABOUT “RUE P” (blue)
1. La Force prison (Brujon gives note to Babet).
2. La Salpêtriere (Note is delivered to Babet’s mistress).
3. Rue Clocheperce (Note is delivered to Magnon).
4. Les Madelonnettes (Note is given to Éponine by Magnon once she is released).
Frankly, the way that Brujon’s secret correspondence about the Rue Plumet job is handed around before being delivered to Éponine is hilarious. Why did Babet bother to send the note all the way to his mistress in La Selpêtriere when Magnon near enough lives on the doorstep of La Force? Surely there could have been a much easier and more logical way for the note to be delivered to Magnon directly, rather than it crossing over the Seine and going to another prison before being smuggled back out to Magnon again.
And, let’s not forget that the same thing happens in reverse after Éponine has scouted out the house on rue Plumet and delivered a biscuit to Magnon. The whole process seems extremely long-winded and perhaps even riskier than Babet and Brujon trying to get the message delivered to Magnon directly!
MONTPARNASSE’S INSANE RUNNING SPEED (red)
Red arrow to red flag: the route taken by Montparnasse to fetch Gavroche and bring him to La Force in order to help Thénardier down from the roof.
Well, by tracking the length of time it takes to complete this route, I have come to the conclusion that Montparnasse has very long legs and is an insanely fast runner.
According to Google Maps taking the quickest route from La Force to the location of the Bastille elephant one way would take over ten minutes to walk. Which sure, maybe that could be run in five minutes if you set a good pace. But, Hugo states that in ‘seven to eight minutes’ Montparnasse had run the complete route twice over (as he had to bring Gavroche back with him to La Force) wearing what I can only image would be rather heavy and uncomfortable garments, considering that his clothes would be soaked with rain at this point of the scene. And, we must account for the time that Montparnasse had to stand outside the Bastille Elephant and call for Gavroche + wait for him to come down and follow him.
It seems like a fairly impressive feat to me that he was able to do all that in seven to eight minutes— I guess he wasn’t referred to as Thénardier’s almost son-in-law in vain then, he certainly seems keen to get the innkeeper down from the roof!
HOW DID BABET ESCAPE? (green)
Green star: La Conciergerie, where Babet was being transferred from La Force when he made his escape. The green line is a rough indication of the route he might have been transported along.
Looking at all of the possible routes that Babet could have been transported along whilst being taken from La Force to La Conciergerie has me intrigued. Of course, I can only speculate about which point he might have escaped (if he even escaped en route? Montparnasse is rather vague when telling Gavroche how Babet escaped... but he does mention a police station— so perhaps Babet had fled before his transportation to La Conciergerie had even begun).
I think it is interesting to note that Magnon’s house is located fairly near La Force and La Conciergerie. And, we know that Magnon is at least acquaintances with Babet’s mistress thanks to the route of delivery of Brujon’s “Rue P” note... so perhaps she granted him a place to hide from the police.
Gueulemer’s hideout in the Arche-Marion sewer is also located very close to La Conciergerie. Again, this would have provided a nice hiding spot for Babet after he made his escape— and we know that Victor Hugo loves a good sewer story.

i've seen this character playlist challenge post resurfacing lately so i'd like to expand on the idea and create a more fully-fledged, more difficult challenge that'll hopefully expand your music horizons beyond the usual tumblrcore/fandom music taste
the challenge
create a character playlist of at least twenty (20+) songs without using the artists and genres listed below* in under an hour
("below" meaning below the readmore)
the restrictions
no artist can appear in the playlist twice
you must have at least three (3+) distinct genres in your playlist
you must include at least three (3+) artists with less than 100,000 listeners on spotify
you must include at least three (3+) songs that are primarily in a language other than english
you must include at least one (1+) hip hop/rap song from a non-white person (be creative with this! rap has a diverse range of sounds from doja cat to dr. dre to death grips)
you must include at least one (1+) song thats from a reasonably obscure and/or underground genre (this does not count to your 3+ distinct genres requirement)
some of these restrictions can be met simultaneously (e.g. a spanish rap song fulfills both the non-english language requirement and the hiphop/rap requirement)
feel free to reblog with your playlist in either the tags or the caption! i'd love to see what people come up with :)
restricted artists/genres are below the readmore

My Playlist: Jimmy Kaga-Ricci Needs a Hug
A Song Analysis.
1. Hey Angel by One Direction- starting off strong with this one for multiple reasons. the one-sided dialogue with an angel reflects the religious imagery of the book and jimmy taking comfort in his religion by talking to god. the words also work really well if you imagine this as jimmy talking to angel about switching roles in life. also, the one direction larry stylinson situation very much fueled alice's idea for jowan, i think, the parallels are very clear.
2. Play My Music by The Jonas Brothers- a fun little jam about a boy just wanting to play his music
3. Salt by Bad Suns- the lead singer of bad suns wrote this song for his transgender friend, but i really would not have guessed that this was written by a cisgender person if i had not looked it up. phenomenal articulation of a transgender experience, obviously the song belongs here
4. Love Me by The 1975- the lyrics reflect jimmy's theme that it is silly to idolize somebody that you don't know
5. Social Cues by Cage The Elephant- another song about coping with fame and anxiety
6. Stressed Out by Twenty One Pilots- jimmy is very stressed, obviously, and reminiscent of when times were simpler
7. You’d Be Paranoid Too (If Everyone You Knew Was Out To Get You) by Waterparks- another song about his anxiety. this song makes me think about how he is so worried about somebody breaking into their apartment and his room. he is frequently worried about being in danger from others
8. Karma by AJR- a song from the perspective of a famous person in therapy. in a podcast explaining the making of this song, the lead singer explains that they edited multiple takes of the bridge together so that there would be no audible breaths in between lines, which heightens the sense that the narrator is spiraling into a panic attack. very much how i imagine jimmy finally in therapy
9. One of Us by Joan Osborn- alice said so and i agree
10. Starting Line by Luke Hemmings- this one is hard to explain, but it's essentially about feeling emotionally numb throughout life due to poor mental health and feeling like life is flying by without really experiencing any of it. i have multiple songs from this album sprinkled throughout all of my playlists for the ark boys, and this one just feels the most like jimmy
11. Only The Brave by Louis Tomlinson- i love that this song has been adopted by fans to be about lgbtq+ bravery. it has to be included
12. Lights Up by Harry Styles- really reflects how little sense of self jimmy has. the main line "lights up, do you know who you are?" really stands out because jimmy states multiple times in the book that he does not know who he is
13. Run Boy Run by Woodkid- maybe this one is a bit dramatic, but it's my running away song, so it naturally goes here
14. Laura Palmer by Bastille- gosh, i love this song. it's another one that's hard to articulate, but it's perfect. "you ran into the night, you can't be found. this is your heart, can you feel it? pumped through your veins, can you feel it?" jimmy runs away, finally acting on his own autonomy, and this song is perfect for it.
15. Make it Stop by COIN- another song about being anxious and overwhelmed. reflective of jimmy trying to put a hold on his chaos that is life by running away from it
16. Anti-Hero by Taylor Swift- this is how jimmy views himself
17. I Always Wanna Die (Sometimes) by The 1975- this song reflects the comments jimmy makes to lister in his childhood bedroom. you know what i'm talking about
18. Weight of Living, Pt. 1 by Bastille- what's this? another song about jimmy's anxiety and the weight of his fame and chaotic life? wow!
19. Earth To God by COIN- a great song narrating a one-sided dialogue with god. this song makes me think of the scene where he stops inside the church in kent
20. 2011 by 5 Seconds of Summer- this is THE jam-session-in-pierro’s-basement song, i don't make the rules. listen to the lyrics and tell me i'm wrong, i dare you. it's literally a band jamming out reminiscing on the days before fame when life was easier and they could just be innocent and play music for fun
21. Comedown by Luke Hemmings- 🎶it’s been a hell of a week🎶
22. Guys by The 1975- alice said so and i agree
23. Give Yourself A Try by The 1975- this just gives end of the book vibes. i hope jimmy starts to give himself a try after all of this
