I've just finished episode 5 of Vivant, and I have to say, I really love and appreciate the mix of languages on this show. You just KNOW that if this show were American, all the "Balkan"/Mongolian characters would be speaking English with a foreign accent for the convenience of the audience. So I absolutely love this show's choice to have huge chunks of the show's dialogue delivered in Mongolian, including lines by the Japanese main characters, and to simply subtitle it in Japanese. No handwaving about how the main characters' foreign contacts just happen to speak Japanese with no expectation that the main characters might also speak Mongolian. No, instead, all the main characters speak Mongolian and English (and Arabic maybe, in Nogi's case?) in addition to Japanese, none of the Americans speak Japanese, only the Balkan/Mongolian characters for whom it makes sense that they would speak Japanese speak Japanese, and the language of the scene is chosen based on what language would most likely be used in that situation in real life. Convenience for the audience is simply not a consideration. And I love it!

And they don't even translate the parts that are subtitled in Japanese so if you can't read the Japanese subtitles you'll #miss like 20% of the story! Not that my Japanese is good enough to understand every word or anything but I can at least get the gist. And #the horrible subtitles are at least able to supply some important words I otherwise wouldn't know. #Anyway. I wish Japanese dramas were more popular in the U.S. so we could get more of them available with English subtitles! #Good professional English subtitles I mean. #As it is I think it's pretty much just whatever Netflix produces in-house and whatever Viki has isn't it? And Viki seems to have their #biggest focus on Korean dramas. I mean they do have dramas from a lot of Asian countries and they have subtitles available in a lot of #languages and that they have that learning mode that lets you watch a show with native-language subtitles with a built-in dictionary which #is awesome. But I am not at this point in my life interested in dramas that don't come from China or Japan so I wish it was easier to watch #Japanese TV in America!

Hi! I just have a little comment on your use of sign language in the carol side fic. I in no means mean to be rude! I’m not a professional! But I do use asl commonly, and I would like to say that the grammar structure is different, especially in newer users (like me!). So when Donnie asks Carol to make his hair like hers and April, it would probably end more like “can, have, hair, like, April, and, you?” Like I said, I’m not a professional! But it is something I noticed.

This is absolutely correct! Thank you! When I was learning ASL in college, my professor (who was Deaf,) would describe it as "caveman-style grammar" to us to help try to get a grasp of ASL sentence structure, as sort of a 'cheat-code' way of thinking about it when we were first learning.

I went back and forth about it, but I ended up deciding not to do a direct translation of ASL grammar in my work. I don't think there's anything wrong with writing it that way, and I think there can be a lot of merit to it, but it just feels a bit odd to me? When translating Spanish to English, for example, we typically wouldn't say, "the cat white," even though that would be the direct translation from, for example, "el gato blanco." We would expect the grammar to be a part of the translation process-- the white cat in English. Obviously, there's a difference between a spoken language and sign language, but it's always sort of felt a bit strange to me, to treat ASL differently from other languages, and only 'translate' it halfway, I guess? (Especially given that a huge part of ASL is facial expression, so you risk leaving a lot of details or nuance behind if you choose to use ASL sentence structure but don't consider user expression in your writing as well.)

Perhaps that's just me being lazy and not wanting to restructure things in my fic, lol. But while I think there are definitely pros and cons to either method and that both are valid options, a complete translation is what I went for in TMWN-- similar to how subtitles are done when a character signs in a movie or a TV show. I want the characters' signed dialogue to read smoothly and retain their voice and personality. I want it to flow the same way it does when they speak in English or in Japanese. Signing is totally natural to these characters! I don't want the reader to slow down to translate grammar, or to draw attention to the fact that it's 'different,' because for the characters it's a totally nbd-everyday thing, and that's not what I want the reader to focus on in this case.

That being said! I am not Deaf, nor fluent in ASL (my gOODNESS have I gotten rusty,,,) so! Take my opinion with a grain of salt and if I'm, like, totally out of line, I'm open to hearing about it, lol. I hope this makes sense? Sorry I went off so hard and wrote so much lmao I just spent a lot of time thinking about it and going back and forth when I first started writing the fic.

With some caveats about violence and mental illness in media, I usually recommend both the Fight Club movie and book. The book especially has a kind of disjointed but evocative prose I think really holds up to analysis.

If you’ve never read it before, I also recommend “Small Gods” by Terry Pratchett. Wonderful mix of comedy and philosophy. Influenced me a lot, in kind of the opposite way that Voltaire’s “Candide” influenced me a lot

Also “The Goblin Emperor” (abused & exiled prince learning how to be king) and its sequels which aren’t really sequels but ARE fantasy world consulting detective genre. These are really not anything like my style, I just like them. 

I hesitate to recommend fanfic because it relies so much on prior context; and if it doesn’t, then when you get into the fandom you’ll realize belatedly that it really isn’t reflective of the source material at all. That said, here are a couple that moved me:

currently in the f1 off season, so ive been thinking about that trend?? of "tell me two thing you didn't know were made by the same person" that was going arround. and it got me thinking of my favorite f1 journalist (tho he's said multiple times he doesn't consider himself one). his name's Víctor Abad and hes from valencia (spain). he's like a 24yo or smth and has a lot of objectively right takes on f1 stuff, in a great ethical and professional way (e.g. he doesn't talk about stuff if it's just a rumor, he wont do it just for the views). i mean, he's great, has a lot of objectivity bc above all else, he really does love the sport, (i.e. although hes a massive fan of Alonso it doesn't interfere with him giving his impartial opinions) (sadly—or thankfully—he only speaks in spanish—and occasionally valencian—and has said he really doesn't want to subtitle/translate his stuff to english bc he doesn't need the attention of the english speaking part of the f1 fandom [he has *opinions* about masi and the 2021 championship british fans might disagree with, specially in twitter, we all know twitter is nasty] so if you don't speak spanish you are missing good f1 content, he's a delight) he has an special in DAZN spain (which i have been unable to watch bc im in latam) and a twitch channel where he mostly talks about f1 but occasionally—more often than not—veers (derails is more accurate) to eurovision. (just been thinking about it now that we are off season bc i tend to take him for granted and i miss him and his content now that we are on the winter break)

Alright so fluent animation requires a group effort, right, and I prefer to work alone, which means my animations have to be as simple as possible or else I can lose my mind - they typically run at around 0.3 FPS 😂

Some would probably call them "animatics", but that's not the right term, as I am not making rough first drafts as guidelines for professional animators, I am making lazy animations and they are not going to look any better, they are the final work 😂 sorry!

Here is my first animated music video, Zrzęda (or Curmudgeon) (it has English subtitles!). I speedrun'd it in two weeks for Valentines Day 2020, using only Gimp and Windows Movie Maker - I didn't want to learn actual animation software just for this one video, as I wasn't sure if I will even like animating, I only knew this one song requires this video to be made (I had a vision!).

This test convinced me that animation is good for me and later I have downloaded Pencil 2D and started doing little walk cycles, like:

Listening: Completely missed the new 100 gecs album because I was travelling over the weekend. I'll get to that. In the meantime I've had the closing track from The Will to Live by Titus Andronicus stuck in my head, that's 69 Stones.

Reading: Someone put up this article on the intricacies of tofu in China and I'm now even more upset about the utter dearth of good tofu options in stores around here. Every time I want to make a tofu thing it's basically impossible to find anything other than the softest shittiest silken tofu that is useless for anything structural and now I learn that they have shit like alkaline tofu? So mad.

Watching: Travellers, when I get a chance. It's fine, decent sci-fi really, but I'm not paying attention to TV shows the way I would like to for reasons.

Chef Wang Gang is an extremely good professional Chinese chef who runs a good YouTube channel if you're interested in Chinese food. Most of his stuff is kind of impractical to make without a very wok-centric kitchen but you can make some of it work.

Far more interesting to me is that he runs a line of prepared food canteen style things and is trying to bring out a commercial store shelf food line, and he does occasional tours of his factory. It's really cool to see the inside of a modern high-end food factory, it's a fascinating mix of laboratory and kitchen. All these videos have good English subtitles.

You can see them doing things like trialing expiry dates and best before dates for the packaged food options, the full cold chain for frozen ingredients, and the complexities of the packaging process, which is so neat. You've got all this equipment for mass-producing food but also a complete scientific kitchen for designing those recipes. Industrial environments are so cool.

Playing: Picking idly at things here and there. Too busy most nights for competitive Valorant with my usual squad.

Making: Plenty of quilt sewing, the decision to go away to see family over the weekend means that's still not quite done. About ⅕ left to go.

Tools and Equipment: You may think that butterfly knives are mostly showy bullshit, and you'd be right, but they're also remarkably effective if you need a knife you can open and close safely with only one hand. Arguably they're as good as Axis-lock knives for that, once you have the basic open down they're perfectly safe and very controllable. I mostly use mine as a prying and scraping tool because I blunted it for training and never bothered to sharpen it again, but it's very useful for those tasks.

What should I watch after The White Sound to feel better?

The thing is ... I haven't watch The White Sound 🥲 because I don't know where I can watch it (with English subtitle, iTunes store said it's not available in my region.)

For now, I would choose Ladies In Lavender.

Good cinematography, good scenery, great soundtrack (props to Joshua Bell, the violinist of this film, for his version of Paganini's Carnival of Venice), Judi Dench portrayed the perfect woman who, despite her age, had an innocent young girl inside her. Daniel as Andrea was such a soft boi who could bite (typical of his characters) Andrea's love for violin was strong, probably too strong, but it was fun to watch him unable to bear listening to music that wasn't played professionally.

Lesson of a Dream is also a good choice, seeing him playing a teacher and I mean, someone who really wanted to teach, to make the kids know better, be better, even though it could impact his career or even his life was something I wanted to see in teachers nowadays. Full with passion.

I need to take a moment to rant about bad translation practices.

Now, I know that translation is a difficult job. There’s a lot of nuance. There’s a lot of artistry in deciding what to translate directly and what to take some liberties with to get the real meaning across.

But there’s also some practices that are just straight-up bad.

I just watched a Bollywood movie called Chopsticks on Netflix (which means it was translated by a professional). It was in Hindi, and I watched it with English subtitles. Now, for those of you who don’t realize, modern Hindi has a lot of English in it. Sometimes it’s a single loan word. Sometimes people switch to English for a while just to sound sophisticated and cool. But there’s a lot of English.

Whoever subbed this movie made the extremely odd executive decision to not put any of the English in the subtitles.

Now, for parts of this, I can sort of understand that thought process. There are a couple of entire conversations that are in English. And I could maaaaaaaaaybe see someone saying “Okay, we don’t need to sub this whole conversation, and for consistency’s sake, we’re going to stick to one option when English comes up in the dialogue.”

But that one option should absolutely have been “always subtitle the English.” For several reasons.

1. What if I were hearing-impaired and trying to watch this movie? There’s no CC for the English.

2. I’m not hearing-impaired. I don’t have auditory processing issues. But if my brain is currently processing visual information and not expecting to switch to auditory information, it makes me miss things. I wasn’t paying attention to the words because I can’t understand the words. I need warning if I suddenly need my ears to catch more than the general vibe.

3. Some of the English is extremely heavily accented, to the point that even when I went back to listen I couldn’t understand what they were saying.

4. The English words are in the middle of a fucking sentence.

I’m going to give a couple of examples. For the purpose of clarity, in the quotes that I’m giving from the movie, whatever was originally in Hindi will be in italics.

At one point they’re trying to read a manual. One guy takes a look at it and says, “It’s in Chinese.” The subtitles just said “It’s in...” and you have to pick up the word “Chinese” yourself from the audio.

This happens several times. Usually it’s at the end of a sentence, or at least at the end of a phrase so that the ellipse is the last thing on the screen at any given time.

But the worst, the WORST offender was towards the end of the movie. A guy says “Please take the plastic covers off of the seats.” The subtitles said “Please take the ... off of the seats.”

Like......... Are you fucking serious? Who looked at that and thought that was a good idea? Why the fuck would you put the ellipse in the middle of a sentence?! Just put the fucking English!!!!!

While watching movies I try to catch the context of the action. One small tip: always watch movies online in your target language, with subtitles also in the sense that language. In the beginning you can view ones, you just have watched before various other language, every food that fully grasp. Go ahead and experiment with keywords. Gather the best you obtain and position them in various combinations. Perform also use numbers inside your domain could be a newly discovered remedy. Putting a '1' before really letter is picked up by the search engines before any letters. Perform use amount followed also by a dash. Each of these are recognized before letters seeking engines.

Seeing my name in the credits for the first time was also quite something!Īfter a six-month pause as a horse-riding guide (my second passion after video games), I moved to Malaga, Spain, from almost one day to the other to fill a localization tester position left vacant by a former colleague from Québec. Those were truly memorable times, during which I learnt a lot, met really great people from all over the world and got the chance to further develop my linguistic skills as well as a good sense of methodology. My translation experience at was enough to land me a position as a game localization QA tester in Québec in 2009, where I worked for a year and a half. How did you transition from being an editor, to being a game translator? I will never be able to thank those guys enough for giving me that opportunity as it was really the door opener to my career. Basically, good linguistic skills and a good command of English were needed for this job. My job was to upload whole catalogues of retro games (I picked SEGA consoles) to their database, which meant taking screenshots, writing game descriptions and mining information in English for many of them. Playing them taught me a lot of vocabulary and basically helped me speak English at a more advanced level than what school required from me.Īs a result, I followed some English studies at university and took my first steps in the business in 2008 with an internship as a junior editor for the biggest French video games website,, where I was a junior editor on their editorial staff. my kpopflex concert experience :)

when i entered the arena i’d say it was between a third and half full. i had a regular floor ticket, and not front of stage, but was still decently close (my only problem being that i’m short so i had to stand on my toes a lot to be able to see orz). there was one (1) warmup act, a group of random play dancers, who were just wrapping up as i entered. then we waited for about an hour before the show actually started; when there was, say, 15 minutes (?) to go they started playing music videos by the performing artists on the screens which got people all fired up and singing along. this gave me a first inkling of what it was going to be like. the ones that seemed the most popular were monsta x (probably by far), nct dream (though they weren’t performing that day), mamamoo and (g)i-dle. also, i feel like i need to mention that while oneus were scheduled to appear they ended up not being able to due to a positive covid case, which might have impacted the schedule.

anyway just before the show started they aired this very meme-worthy safety film, then a there was a black screen with a quote in german that i didn’t understand, but after a few seconds the author goethe’s name faded in beneath which made many people laugh (bc what’s he got to do with this kpop concert lol). then there was another video featuring hoyeon jung (!) who thanked everyone for squid game’s international success and korean media’s surge of popularity. it was kind of random but it also featured videos with the performing idols speaking about how excited they were to come there and perform so it wasn’t all just general k-culture promotion.

soon after that all the artists walked out on stage and i didn’t see shit so i didn’t understand they were actually there until all of them had entered lol, i just thought it was a speaker voice hyping people up for what was to come. really hadn’t expected them all to come out at once. the only ones missing were mamamoo, who instead appeared on the mini stage (connected to the main stage thru a runway) closer to the audience, and started performing. i was so taken aback by all of this at once so i barely reacted at all, it’s like it took some time for my brain to really register that this was happening...

mamamoo

they were all wearing these cute pink and white outfits and started out immediately by performing aya. they were legit really close to where i was standing but i still found it hard to localise them at first lol i’m short and didn’t even know there was a mini stage until then. they then did their introduction on the main stage and a quick ment, you could tell most of the ments from all artists were pre-planned since they put up generally accurate subtitles on the screens as they spoke. i still found it hard to believe they were actually there, i screamed along with everyone else and i’m glad there were quite a few moomoos standing around me (with lightsticks!) so i definitely didn’t feel alone. they performed gogobebe, hip and um oh ah yeh, and man they’re such good performers. so professional yet still super vivid in their movements and adlibs etc. also mamamoo were the only group whose songs i knew ALL the lyrics too so i sang along to it all (i mean i often do when i’m at concerts but they’d actually even asked for people to sing along if they knew the songs). was probably one of few to do so, but there was always a super loud chorus of voices during hooks and english bits (like hip hae hip... or oh yes, um oh ah yeh). moonbyul received the most screams which i’m not surprised about, but i probably screamed the loudest at wheein. lol. super happy with the selection of songs btw, great upbeat songs that created such a nice vibe all around. for um oh ah yeh they walked around the stage and did audience interactions and such, and of course they adlibbed “ich liebe dich” during that one part. my only complaint really is that their stage felt very short and i wish they could’ve performed more. i’m pretty sure mamamoo were the only group during the sunday show that didn’t have anything extra going on beyond their performances.

after mamamoo, kai appeared on stage to do some quick mc-ing. might as well mention this since there were short breaks between the performances where other artists appeared to do some smalltalk, kai did it first but then the task was handed to members of ive and ab6ix. the ive members even had a short quiz ready for the occasion. and on the topic of...

they started off by performing love dive which is a BOP btw. they seemed reasonably popular despite being such a new group, and people all over were singing along to the, well, sing along-friendly parts of their songs. they also performed royal, had a short but sweet ment in english (!) and then performed eleven. overall they seemed happy to perform and had nice energy, and by now i was fully realising this was occurring which meant that i was already a bit overwhelmed when the next act appeared...

dreamcatcher

i don’t think i noticed they’d entered until i heard the opening notes of maison... then i freaked out. the fact that they were there, so close to me, and performing, that i was actually seeing them in that moment nearly had me full out sobbing. i definitely had tears in my eyes which maybe wasn’t ideal since it was only me and like one other girl in my near vicinity who were fans lol. so i might have bothered some of the others around me, as i almost only “woooo”-screamed otherwise, but suddenly started high pitch screaming in a way i didn’t even know i could. unfortunately i mostly took videos of them and they all suck bc i was shaking so much lmao. anyway after maison they did a fairly lengthy ment with individual presentations, talking about past experiences in germany and mentioning their first win which we all cheered about <33 they also made us chant dreamcatcher, dreamcatcher, dreamcatcher.... also if anyone heard someone screaming to the point of startling the person in front of them and weakly stuttering out a “gahyeon...” after she spoke it was me lol. they also performed because and scream, which i SCREAMed along to and sort of half-jumped to the best of my ability, it’s one of my favourite of their songs. they had SUCH great energy and presence and they also had a special stage later in the show so there’s more :)

they first showed a short vlog of them travelling to germany on the screens which was p cute. then they appeared and performed two songs, i’m not familiar with their discography at all but the first one sounded like a promo track and the other was called 1, 2, 3 and was a cutesy fanservice song. they then had a ment in which they spoke some english, then did a dance challenge event with the audience with moderate success (what can i say, it’s hard to dance along when it’s your first time learning the choreo and in a tightly packed crowd). basically they showed the fairly simple point dance moves of popular songs by nct, blackpink, and bts, then had us all trying to dance along with them, and finally performing another one of their songs. i didn’t know anything about them before this but they were one of the groups with the greatest energy and presence overall, so i was very pleasantly surprised. they seemed like they had a lot of fun and interacted a lot with the audience (as mentioned).

before they appeared there was a short vcr of them teaching the choreo of the chorus of tomboy and inviting us all to dance along. obviously they started by performing said song and had the whole audience scream out “YEAH I’M FUCKING TOMBOY” which was a great experience (that song is such an anthem. like p much all their songs lol). i was very excited to say the least. they’re such amazing performers too, i was particularly impressed with shuhua and yuqi who were both KILLING it that day. next up was latata and then a ment. they all had such positive energy, minnie especially was super smiley and fun. after that they stood in formation to perform oh my god but the crew played some other song LMAO so they just jammed out for a bit and laughed it off, it was a p funny moment. but yeah oh my god was AMAZING to experience live because the chorus of thousands of people going “oh my god” during the hook just made the song even more epic. they then had a fun time performing my bag, then exited the stage really close to where i was standing ;-;

after that the mc-ing ive members presented a video the crew had prepared where they’d asked a bunch of other idols whose songs they’d most like to cover. dkz answered monsta x (in general), kwon eun bi wanted to sing bol4’s to my youth (<3), purple kiss were thinking of covering 2ne1’s i don’t care (!!!), and younite paid respects to kai bc he’s someone they’d looked up to while dreaming of becoming an idol. when the vcr was almost done i looked to the side stage and who was standing there if not dreamcatcher.... and i got ridiculously excited again. if you’ve seen the pics you’d know they all wore suits and stood in a line, each behind a standing mic, and the one closest to me was sua who was super fun and emotive the whole way through. their special stage was a cover of blackpink’s kill this love which naturally was a hit with the audience. and they were SO good, they all individually have such nice voices my god. what a great time. they also exited the same way as idle, btw :)

monsta x

seemingly appearing out of nowhere (i’m kidding, iirc there was a short video introducing them beforehand), they performed love (i’m pretty sure that’s the name of the song?). i realised that i’d probably underestimated their popularity bc it became clear they were the most anticipated act as the air suddenly was full of fan banners and even louder screaming than before. i’m not exactly a fan but i’m somewhat familiar with them but suddenly i found myself in the situation those closest to me had been in when dc performed lol. they also performed a song called autobahn since they were in germany and all. during their ment they spoke a mix of korean and english (jooheon seemed to have the highest energy and did most of the talking), and then transitioned into a special event they’d prepared called fan proposal: love (lol). basically they were each supposed to show their love to the audience in different ways appealing to each of their individual charms... it took quite some time and felt a bit awkward but hyungwon did a funny little dance which was probably the highlight of the segment imo. they performed two (? iirc) more songs and the last one was a sweet fanservice song (would guess the title’s saranghanda since they sang it over and over) so there were good vibes overall. they were probably the ones allotted the most time, which i guess made sense since they seemed the most popular, and kept p high energy and connected with the audience well. plus i got to hear some fairly  good songs i hadn’t heard before, they seem to keep a high quality level nowadays.

kai

at first there was a vcr showing his background in exo and his goals as a solo artist, when those exo clips started playing people cheered really loudly and there were suddenly a whole bunch of eribongs in the air which made me feel kinda emotional... i’ve never seen exo live despite being their fan for almost 10 years, sigh. anyway it really seemed like the exo fandom was alive and well because when kai later talked to the audience and mentioned showing support for exo as a whole people screamed louder than ever. :’) anyway he appeared with a group of dancers and (unsurprisingly) started off with the song peaches, which i like but was never the hugest fan of until now tbh. because it has the sweetest and nicest vibes it really made standing in the arena with aching legs and feet suddenly feel like some sort of cloudy wonderland or something. my only complaint would be that both he and all the dancers wore these black outfits that didn’t contrast too much to the set, so if you stood far away it would be a bit harder to distinguish them, and especially him. anyway he seemed super sweaty and out of breath afterwards and had to run to get a bottle of water. granted it was almost 30 degrees out and probably warmer inside the stadium, but he seemed more affected than everyone else so i hope he wasn’t sick or anything. in any case he kept his energy up and spoke for a fairly long time to the audience, smiled a lot, also he repeatedly mentioned how he had been looking forward to performing at the deutsche bank park since he’s a football fan and had seen it a lot on tv lol. he then performed vanilla (again, a song with such nice vibes + great choreography where he does a little duet with one of the background dancers) and to be honest for the first time (!), which is probably my favourite song from that album?! so i was very happy lmao. he had another quick little talk, moved to the small stage and finally performed mmmh, to which i sang along with gusto. this isn’t exactly news but he really is such an expressive performer and looks so much like he enjoys being on on stage, it’s such a joy to watch. and i mean he was really the best dancer there that day, it’s unbelievable :) at the end there were some flames erupting from the main stage (super hot for us fairly close to it) and at the last chorus there was a confetti rain :))

it simply just ended after that. i wrote about my experience with the event in general in another post, but for the show itself i was impressed with how structured it was and how all the artists seemed professional yet genuinely happy to be there and kept up the high energy throughout the whole concert. it wasn’t completely like a music show concert (think like music bank in ___) but not like a proper festival either, it was somewhere in-between. even though the schedule around it was a bit messy and i got in fairly late so i couldn’t stand as close as i’d hoped, i really enjoyed myself and forgot about how tired i was and how much my legs were aching after all the travelling and standing (and barely having eaten or drunk anything all day lol). i did hear that some people fainted because of the heat however. 

i’d say i’d go again if they invited artists that really interested me, like the reason i went was because they managed to put mamamoo, dc and kai all in one place (mmm especially being a draw because who knows how long they’ll keep performing together in the future...). if the event was held closer to where i live i’d probably go even if my favourites weren’t coming because a lot of what made it such a commitment to me was all the travelling. i’ve been to plenty of concerts and the like where i’ve had to stand and wait for many many hours so i’m not super bothered by that, in fact, this one was rather quick in comparison. so i’d definitely say it was worth it.

might post some more pictures but as you have seen they all kinda suck because i’ve got an old phone with a shitty camera and i had to try and reach above people’s heads and such 😑

gagaoolala subs (official) versus mine (fan)

But they are both correct. How, you ask?

Well, hello and welcome to a long-ass rant about why I think it’s important to give a shit as a translator.

DISCLAIMER: I’m not native English speaker, I’m not a professional subtitler (technically), and my subtitles are FAR from perfect. In some instances, Gagaoolala serves better quality translations when we’re talking in terms of delivering a meaning from one language to another. I could write a whole ass essay on this as it is a matter of translation theories.

With that being said,

1. I think part of the reason our subtitles are wildly different is that Gagaoolala obviously gives their translators the script without the actual video and audio.

How do I know?

This ^^^

If the translator had been listening to the audio, they would never have gotten Hira’s name wrong - but Hira’s name can be read as “Taira” (Google suggests Taira Kaima the baseball player as an example), so if you were to just read the script you would have no way of knowing the pronunciation used in the show.

This would also probably be why they can release English subs so fast while I take days to finish mine.

2. The major reason I am adding my subtitles to this series is that I love the imagery Hira uses when he speaks and how some of his best lines are taken directly from the novel. Obviously this makes me want to keep as close to the original wording and imagery as possible - but if you read the above scene about Kiyoi’s influence on Hira, I honestly think Gagaoolala’s subs make it much easier to understand what Hira is actually saying.

However, IMO it takes away from his character.

The dirty stream he’s talking about is referencing back to the rubber duck from episode 1:

Novel version-Hira refers back to Captain Duck a lot by saying things like “I must be like the curly lashed Captain Duck floating along the dirty manmade river” to tell himself to calm down enough to be able to talk without stammering.

You don’t need to know all this to watch the series, and if you haven’t read the book, you probably wouldn’t know at all - and I don’t think Gagaoolala’s translator has. I have though, and I think these images and sentences are a vital part of showing who Hira is and adds a lot of depth to his character. Especially because the series is mostly carried by his monologues. That’s why, even if it’s probably harder to understand, I want my subtitles to be closer to the original Japanese.

Like this scene from episode 4. My translation (right) is translating exactly what he says, but if you get the image, you can’t really say that Gagaoolala’s translations are wrong… I may just be a sappy simp, but I’m a sucker for stuff like this and was sad to see it gone.

The image Hira paints of Koyama becomes much more vivid and warm than Gagaoolala’s subs make them out to be. According to Gagaoolala, he’s just a nice guy, right? And the way Hira sees people is different from how most see them, so I think the description is important to keep.

It’s like when your teacher asks you to read a book and write a paper on it. Gagaoolala’s the student who analyzed and rephrased but didn’t like the book. I’m the kid who was sobbing at 1AM and made my paper 10 pages longer than it had to be just because it’s such a good book.

I hope that if you watch the show using my subtitles, you’ll love it just as much as me.

TL;DR: GagaOOlala didn’t translate wrong, they just don’t care about the story as much as I do.

Okay.

Okay. You're okay. You'll be fine. You take a deep breath.

Today was like any other day. You'd just gotten out of your last class of the day and you were heading to work. You were a simple college student (as were most of your coworkers) and the barista job you had at the little cafe right off campus was your only source of income. It paid surprisingly well so you never complained.

The last thing you were expecting when you open the glass doors of the coffee shop is to see a camera crew setting up lights and cameras and-

Your eyes grow wide and you have to blink a few times to make sure it's real.

"Hey, y/n, what are you staring... at..." The familiar chime of someone else entering the shop snaps you out of your daze. When you turn around, you meet another pair of shocked eyes. They belong to your close friend, who also worked as a barista.

"Are you fucking seeing what I'm seeing right now..?" Your friend points a shaky finger to the seven handsome Korean men talking to the director. You quickly grab her arm and pull it down to her side when you notice one of the men, with curly hair and particularly dark eyes look over to the two of you. You offer an awkward smile and he simply turns back to focus his attention back on the director.

"Fuck, fuck. He looked at us. He saw you pointing." You whisper yell at your friend before grabbing her hand and dragging her behind the counter and into the back room. It was the only safe place left in the entire cafe that wasn't crowded with security and staff.

"Did our manager say anything about a worldwide boy group showing up to our tiny little urban cafe? Because I sure as hell don't remember it." Your friend paces around the small area of the backroom. The place was jammed with unopened packs of coffee beans and various cardboard boxes.

"No. No, I don’t think he did. Do you think we were supposed to come in for work today? What if they kick us out?" You open the door slightly, peering out into the open area of the coffee shop. It looked like the camera crew finally finished setting up and everyone was getting into their positions. "Ah, they're starting."

Now it’s your friend’s turn to grab your hand. Her nails practically dig into your wrist as she drags you out the room and towards where the camera crew is set up. No one seems to pay you two much attention as they're too focused making sure they had the right angles.

"Look, we can see everything from here without getting in the way." The municipal cafe you worked at was wide and open meaning there was lots of rooms for the hand-carved dark oak tables and big comfortable armchairs that littered the area. Your friend effectively pushes you down into one of the chairs before taking a seat across from you. She was right, you could see everything from here. And you were just out of frame.

The recording starts with the Bangtan boys saying something familiar in Korean and the director explaining... something in Korean. Suddenly, you're wishing you had English subtitles in real life.

It doesn't occur to you until various well-known tools and ingredients are placed in front of the seven guys that they're filming a run BTS episode. You probably should've figured that out sooner. As your eyes skim over the numerous appliances, you also figured out what they're doing. They're learning how to make professional handmade coffee. You guess it's safer than letting them use the bigger machines.

As the recording progresses, you find yourself laughing at how bad they are at following directions. You'd think seven guys who were skilled at learning and mastering choreography could follow basic instructions about using a Moka pot. Boy, were you wrong.

But surprisingly enough, one of them is doing pretty damn good. Actually, he's doing really fucking good!

It's Taehyung, you recognize immediately.

Your eyes follow the curly-haired man’s movements closely. His hands are working expertly against the coffee bean grinder. It's mesmerizing and oh, so satisfying watching the way the veins in his hands and arms bulge as he pushes the top of the grinder down to activate the machine. You bite your lip as your brain slowly flooded with images of those hands around your neck or the way his big hands would cover the expanse of your thighs. Have you always had a hand kink? If not, you do now.

Your eyes drift upward, stopping briefly to admire how sexy he looks in an apron. He's wearing a white button-down shirt underneath it with about four buttons undone. The sliver of skin showing has you reeling.

And then your eyes stop at his face. That beautiful jawline, the perfect curl of his hair, and that dark, hooded look in his eyes. If you didn't know any better, you'd think he was looking at... at...

Holy shit, he was looking at you.

You watch as a smirk forms on his face. He'd obviously caught you eyeing him up and at the moment, he was absolutely eating up the way you shifted under his inculpative glare. You nervously look around as if saying, 'you're looking at me? Are you sure?' and he lets out a little laugh in response, his wicked smirk turning into a genuine smile before his focus is back on his coffee beans.

You let out a breathless sound.

Is this what people call a 'y/n moment'?

The recording continues for the next hour as they tried different methods of making coffee. You alternated between watching the show and talking to your friend but throughout that time, you kept feeling a pair of eyes on you, especially when your attention shifted to your friend in front of you. As she talks about how annoying some guy in her psychology class is, you can practically feel Taehyung’s eyes boring through the side of your head and into your soul.

Maybe you just thought he was looking at you. You were such an ordinary person. What would Taehyung- rich, sexy, famous, talented Taehyung want with a boring girl like you?

But you still wanted to test it. You wanted to see if he was really looking at you. If he was staring at you so intently, it had to mean something right?

You look around you to make sure you're not in the line of sight of any cameras before standing up, your friend stops her story to ask where you're going.

"Not going anywhere..." You stand beside your chair and adjust your skirt that had ridden up from you sitting down. "I just wanna stretch real quick."

Taehyung watched as you stood up, his eyes were drawn to the insane amount of thigh you were showing. If your skirt had ridden up any higher, he's sure he'd get a good look at something he's not supposed to see. His grip on the table in front of him tightens at the thought and he's lucky no one notices the way his knuckles turn white.

In your opinion, your outfit wasn't anything special. It was a simple red crop top paired with a black pencil skirt that hugged your waist and hips nicely. Now that you were standing up, Taehyung could get a good look at your body.

You raise your arms up slightly so your hands were behind your head. The action inadvertently brings your crop top up higher and pulls it tighter against your chest. You weren't completely sure if Taehyung was still watching, but to top it all off you tilt your head back slowly, letting your face twist into one of pleasure as you show off how amazing it feels to stretch your body.

When you open your eyes and look back towards Taehyung, you almost stumble back into your chair. To be completely honest, you didn't think he'd have any sort of reaction but you were greatly mistaken.

His lips were wet and parted slightly as if he'd just licked them and his eyes were iniquitous and clouded with lust. He was looking at you as if the only thing stopping him from taking you apart was the bright flashing red light on the cameras.

His stare has you stumbling back into your seat, your eyes not leaving his for a second. It feels like you're locked in place, like you're not allowed to look away until he orders you to.

"You're so extra." Your friend’s voice is kind of distant and quiet but it's all you need to snap out of the weird limbo between you and Taehyung.

"Huh?"

"I said you're extra. You stretched and made it look like you were having the best orgasm of your life." She laughs and you roll your eyes in response. When you look back at Taehyung, he's conversing with his bandmates like nothing even happened.

The filming finishes up rather quickly. The time you don't spend gushing at the seven men, you spend quietly squealing with your coworker friend. It feels as if it's over as quickly as it started, though, and as the camera crew starts to load their things into their vans, your manager instructs you to get to your station. He tells your coworker to focus on opening the shop once everyone leaves and she walks away with an "ai ai, cap'n".

The weird ordeal with Taehyung completely slips your mind as you walk behind the counter and put your apron on. First, you had to check to make sure all the machines were working and then you could-

"Hey."

The voice is deep and very familiar.

Fuck.

"Hi! I mean, hi." Your brain is a jumbled mess as you turn around and you're greeted by a tall, handsome man on the other side of the counter. Taehyung approached you. Taehyung is talking to you. Breathe.

"You're, uhh..." You watch expectantly as the man searches for the words. Somehow, his thinking face makes you feel a little less intimidated. "You're a coffee woman. You make... coffee here." He concludes and at first, you're a bit confused until you figure out what he's trying to say. You let out a little laugh.

"Yeah, I work here. I'm a barista." Taehyung tilts his head at your words.

"Barista... Ah, sorry, my English. It's not good." He rubs the back of his neck sheepishly and your heart practically swells in your chest. He's so cute, oh god. He's so cute and hot at the same time.

"No, no! It's okay!" You raise your hands up in a calming motion before silence falls between you two. You're first to speak up.

Back to this post, because real life made me unable to reply in 5 days

While the controversy in itself was completely made up - as in the use of “literal” didn’t mean wonky google translate translation but a text that was closer to the characterisation from an old opus as opposed to the one from a more recent one - it tackled the usual, as I’d say it, the dub vs sub debate.

To put in perspective, I watched a dubbed episode of Dai’s Quest yesterday (the 2020 edition), and in the credits of the French Dub, we have some random french guy (or belgian guy?) credited as “author”.

Not, “author of the dubbed script” or as “translator” or “script written for the translated version”, nope, just “author”.

To me, this person is not the author of this episode, of the manga or even of the anime.

So why was this guy credited as “author”??

Once upon a time, when yellow subtitles were a thing made by fans to understand their anime (or even in some mangas with fanslation teams!) people were closer to a more litteral translation.

So of course we had the memetic “keikaku means plan” in translator notes, included in the subtitles, and it was a chore to read - but it was generally agreed that those yellow things were just here to help you understand what was being said, in the “closest in spirit” form to the original source material.

If you wanted something that was less clunky, the dub was here - but with the dub came the “liberties” associated with said dub.

By the “yellow subtitles” era, 4Kids was already dead, or shat upon universally (at least in France).

But there used to be an era where, someone thought it would be acceptable, or even adequate, to “dub” riceball as “donut” and even if the image wasn’t changed, Brook was still handling a triangle shaped donut with visible rice and nori - this thing existed. Why?

Was it because “riceballs” wasn’t acceptable to a “western” audience, or they wouldn’t understand it? Thus they brought the “donut” instead, because it would talk to the audience (TFW they didn’t “localise” it as croissant in the french dub) ?

We all (I) had our weeb phase, where we tried to say “Nii-san” and understood the difference between “-san” and “-sama”, even if some translation could translate it as “mister”. But the yellow subtitles kept those differences, and sometimes even wrote it as “san” and “sama”, so for people who only watched them, they understood that there is a polite form of adress in “-sama” that doesn’t really exist in english, even if one should try to “convey” this polite form of adress in the lines or words spoken.

Like, if a certain someone watched a lot of “yellow subbed” stuff, he wouldn’t have made up 10k words about toxic masculinity by misunderstanding the pronoun “ore”.

Yellow subtitles were made by people who loved the anime they were subbing, they were made by fans.

 And those fans tried to be as close as possible to the source material, because they loved the source material and would not even want to add their own “interpretation” in their wonky subtitles, because wonky or not wonky, they loved the source material, not their own take on said source material (even if the line became blurred, like, say, fanon!Edel).

Now, in a game, I understand how people don’t want to play the “keikaku means plan” subbed version, because those things are good to be called “fanslations”, but in a professional work? This just can’t work.

And this is where we have a problem.

Everyone said it in the notes under the OG post, but translation is a difficult job, and it isn’t just about “translating word to word” something, it has to make sure the “translated version” keeps the same meaning, or conveys the same thing. Take the spanish Usted/Ustedes, it is a polite/very formal form of adress, like the “vous” in French -

Take Bleach’s Rukia. 

Her brother is a noble, one of the noblest nobles to ever noble out there. Byakuya is refered as “onii-sama” the first time they meet in the manga/anime, this is one of the highest (as i understand it?) form of polite adress one could give to their brother.

The french dub only dubbed it as “brother”, without keeping the “polite form” of adress. 

Of course, calling Byakuya “my estimeed lord and brother” would feel clunky - but it would convey the message. Calling him “brother” with the random polite form of adress “vous” doesn’t quite cut it.

Still, you can say this is one of the goofs that came with 2000s era of dubbing, people tried but sometimes it failed. I supposed the main reasoning behind those “fails” was just to make a script that wouldn’t feel “odd” to anyone listening or hearing it.

But what about the intent? Or how it is important for Rukia to call her brother with this degree of politeness because she’s only an adopted member of his family and he his the noblest noble to ever noble out there? Kazé (the guys doing the dub) thought bringing this “less clunky” version to the audience was more important than conveying, through those words, Rukia’s deference towards her brother. Kazé might love Bleach, but they’re first and foremost a professional company tasked with bringing Bleach to a French audience, so no “keikaku means plan” nope. 

They had to get rid of the clunky, and give a more “natural” vibe to their dubbed version of Bleach.

Then, comes the WTF depicted in the article.

I claim far and wide how the lolcalisation for FE16 (please not the extra L to make lol) butchered certain characters I happen to care about, and ultimately muddled the already, hm, really really really subtle message the game tried to convey, burried under a pile of player pandering shit.

But, now that I think about it, it already started before but I pretended not to care because, uh, it wasn’t impacting me or it only happened for anime/games I didn’t care about, but Faulconer’s BA straight up replacing Kikuchi’s OST for DBZ in the US is, imo, completely WTF, like, to properly localise DBZ, Funanimation had to, back then, get rid of the japanese OST ? For “some reason”? What the actual fuck? Not even only using the instrumental versions, for the ones with japanese lyrics, nope, just newping them and swapping something else??

(1998-2003 (or 2001-2005) was also the 4Kids Era which might... explain things, but those explanations are flat)

Music and OSTs are inherent pieces of a work, you cannot claim to love the source material if you remove it’s bloodstream!

Still, those oddities were from the 4Kids era, and as I pointed out above, this era was - european wise - a disaster for localisation and dubs, which prompted fans to create their own “yellow subtitles”.

I suppose if mainstream animes, like Bleach or Naruto, were aired (??) in the US, they were aired post 4Kids era so no “OST switch”, meaning that, at least, they were closer to what Kazé was doing here. Give a “less clunky than fanslation teams” dub, but still keep the spirit of the substance of the source material.

But with FE16, and this thing @nilsh13​ linked?

We’re back to 4Kids, or worse, evil!4Kids, not hiding their editorial changes under some “a western audience wouldn’t understand what is a rice ball, and they wouldn’t understand why people are singing in this foreign language”, but using their “creative license” to get away with most of their shit.

This is, in substance, the reason why I am always puzzled (and furious) each time a new blooper for the FE16 lolcalised script happens. 

I understand some people don’t really like organised religions, okay. But why the frick altering the script, peppering “tyrants” here and “by the will of the goddess” instead of “if you have a good reason” there ? It’s minor, I understand, but when you have Ghetis in your team deriding the Church, let Ghetis use her rhetoric and manipulation threads to entice people to join her fight, the script isn’t supposed to be altered to make Ghetis look more convincing!

I, however, understand the feeling of professional localisers being disrespected if people prefer to play a “yellow subtitles” game, because their work is really important, and a good localisation will bring puns, convey meanings as close as possible to the non-intended audience.

Look at the Ace Attorney series for peak localisation, or even, as odd as it sounds, Pokémon! All those puns, Pokémon names, attacks etc... This is being creative, playing with language to “bring” the OG pun to a french/US audience, and it works!

I am very glad not to have bothered with Tales of Arise then, because I do not want to play Tommy’s take on the game, I want to play Tales of Arise, and make my own opinion/take on this game.

Tom isn’t asked to bring the “one true translation” to US audiences, he is asked to localise the game, that is to bring the game to, I suppose, US audiences (Bamco has an European branch who localised things without borrowing the version Bamco US made?).

Alrighty Tommy, but you are the one paid to bring the game to western audiences. Of course, if I could get someone’s else LP or translation for free, or as a bundle next to your take, I’d take it. But this alternative does not exist, and we are stuck with your take.

This is why, I reiterate, whoever managed to create and update the FE Datamine Website has all of my gratitude, and even beyond, because it makes it possible to see those different translations - for free - and notice what went wrong with the localisation process.

Good for you Tommy, your take on the game (dare i say fanfiction?) will forever exist, but if I was in his shoes, and my employer told me he has to redo that thing I did 6 years ago because it was shit, I’d cry and feel really bad, I wouldn’t be proud.

No Tommy, Tales of Arise didn’t sell because it was localised by Tommy Jimmy, it sell because it was from the Tales franchise, and because (i suppose) it is a good game people loved. “Your product” isn’t yours, only the localised script is yours, the nerve of calling a game you participated for 15% extra content “your game”

You’re not the author of the game.

As I said before, creative mind is something really wonderful when used in localisation, and can bring gems like the AA series or even Pokémon. But “creative autonomy”? What Autonomy are we talking about? Tommy was alone in a room, revamped the script added his tweaks, didn’t submit it to Bamco US or Bamco and gave it the developpers as the “localised” version? Is Tommy really trying to compete with, uh, the game he is supposed to localise to “demonstrate his insight and creative autonomy”?

See, again, the difference with fanslations, fans love the game they’re localising, Tommy “competes” against the game.

Fates’s translation was a mess, yes, it happened 5 years ago, and yet, Treehouse didn’t get the memo because even if the localisation is less of a mess for FE16, meanings have been altered.

For flavour text and dialogues, yes, not for plot important points (I think?) but it’s still an alteration in the meaning that wasn’t made necessary with the need to convey a notion or a concept to western audiences.

Yes, translation is an art, a science and a creative endeavor. I never stated the contrary. However, like all art, and science, it works within certain boundaries. Hate or Love the source material, the thing is the localiser has to bring it to his targeted audience, and will make some choices to do so, but the red thread to be followed, the thing that must be kept in mind is to bring “this game” to the audience, and not “a game I corrected to fit my opinions/take”.

American children* cannot understand what is a riceball ? Fine, 4Kids will use donuts instead.

American players will play this game I advertise as being ruled by an oppressive Church, and how Ghetis will look for a kind successor and Pope Francis is always unhinged and screaming “’till her eyes explode”. No that’s a big no, and you’re not even trying to justify it by saying “American gamers need this version of the game else they will not understand or something”.

Tommy, Jenny and Kevin are not “altering” the script as a standard localisation process (swap the -sama by something else without making it clunky!) depicting their mastery of english language, nope. If they are complaining about the restraints to their ability to present “their take” on the game to an audience, they are already crossing the boudaries of “localisation”.

And I know, translating something always - always - mean inserting a part of yourself in your work, that’s why, if you really really really want to get the true source material, then start to learn the language.

However, I believe there’s still a middle ground between inserting “the translator’s takes” in the game, and the, idk, passive bias of the translator who tries to remain neutral - to bring the game, as close as possible, to a targeted audience (US, French, Spanish, etc etc).

Now, what happened with FE16? Was Pat and the team’s passive bias against organised religions too strong and it ended up in “do not kill unless the goddess tells you to”, even if this point is really important in FE16, and how, for all intentes and purpose, the Church of Seiros does not control Fodlan or has any relative influence in the 3 countries, even if someone says the contrary ?

But it wouldn’t explain the sheer difference in, even, the advertising of the game. NoA’s advertising claims the Church controls Fodlan, when the JP never said that, but even the NoE campaigns, in all languages (I think?) never wrote so in their official websites!!

What is NoA’s FE16? A take on the game, à la Tommy’s Tales of Arise? A 4Kids version of the game, tailored to american audiences? A failed localisation, like FE14?

The reason why I diss on the localisation for FE16 as loLcalisation is, mainly, because of the voice acting.

I understand for a dubbed game a JP!Bernie would sound super weird, and maybe some VAs wouldn’t want to try to mimick her.

But, as always, for Rhea? A kind and gentle person, seen as motherly, who becomes angry when people try to kill her, her family or her wards is... reduced to “lady with a temper you do not want to cross”? “Rhea just is”? “Rhea doesn’t emote”??

Why the frick Cherami Leigh received directions to voice Rhea-bot v.1 when the topic isn’t Sothis or Billy, or to voice Rhage when Rhea plays with her witch costume and gives sweets to people?

Even Edel, someone once said JP!Edel is the waifu bait, but under the bait you discover a red Emperor. NoA!Edel is a red emperor/serious person bait, and under the bait you get the waifu.

Why was this changed?

I don’t want to know, but this is why, I reiterate, I give many thanks to whoever updated the FE Datamine, and for whoever at IS who decided to bring Dual Audio back to the game.

I don’t want to hear Pat’s take on Rhea, I want to hear Rhea.

* if this sounds like I diss on US media because of their wonky localisation issues, never forget the French versions of popular animes, back in the time (90s!!), were heavily censored, made up scripts from scratch and had those goddamn french openings, completely out of this world.

Like, Fist of the North Star because meme’d so much here in Wonder France because the dub was completely made up, people didn’t follow the script at all which resulted in “Ken le Survivant” which isn’t, for all intents and purposes, a localised version of Fist of the North Star (the author even joked about it!).

Ditto for City Hunter - which became “Nicky Larson” - and the infamous “restaurants végétariens” to censor “brothels”, also with randoms mooks being shot exclaiming “Aïe bobo!” of “Oups je suis mort!” (”welp i’m dead!” <- the work of someone who cannot localise for shit)

And the ultimate, peak work of French localisation, the opening of DBZ (and, of course, the opening of DB)

Translations and at forth glance, the bug is only growing

So I had that rambling the day before yesterday about a scene in Kieta Hatsukoi volume 1, and then I unwittingly had another one yesterday.

And then hoped I'd be over this being bugged maybe today.

Instead, youtube's recommendation algorithm seems to have caught on my bug, because of who knows what it caused it to present me with a random AMV using footage from the live action drama adaption.

Which had this in it:

Japanese: Aoki: サムイわ Ida: たしかに今日寒いな

English subs: Aoki: I'm getting goosebumps... Ida: You're right, it is kind of cold today.

And I was clapping my hands and thinking: Wow, that's a great localization!

I mentioned it already in the first rambling. It's not the simplest line to translate since it's a homophone word play, but making "slow" to be the new "cold", did have me choke-----

To elaborate, this is the Japanese page:

This is the English release:

サムイ (samui) primarily means 寒い (cold), but there is also this staple picture of how the air freezes over a bad joke, so samui also means lame, corny or dull. Ida doesn’t catch that, and thinks Aoki is referencing the weather and just affirms that the weather is cold. (Note how samui is also spelled differently in each of their lines. サムイ vs. 寒い.) "Goosebumps" from the drama translation is obviously not a literal translation, but imo a really cool way of transporting both the cold and how it's kind of just awkward. And the mental image of it would suit Aoki so well, since he always has such funny ideas and reactions.

To be fair, I didn't have any good idea how I would best localize that line myself before that, and the best I probably would have come up is something like "so uncool". That was one of the bits that caused me to double-dip on the English release in the first place, so I could check for an example of how it's professionally handled. But "slow" makes no sense whatsoever in this context (why'd you call somebody "slow" who's just moved you to tears??) so I was just consoling myself with that at least dense-Ida is preserved.

But actually there is more to it, which I am only noticing today, and it's making me like the manga even more for it's multilayered dialogues and characterization.

Let me summarize again:

Japanese manga: Aoki: ・・・ほんとう・・・サムイわ　お前・・・ Ida: たしかに今日寒いな

English release: Aoki: You really are... such a slow guy... Ida: I guess we are walking pretty slow.

What I'd go for recycling the genius drama subtitles: Aoki: You... I'm getting goosebumps... Ida: It certainly is cold today.

Note: The live action lines are a bit shortened on Aoki's line and have additions on Ida's line. The line itself is literally the same line, but instead of a deadpan manga-Ida who's spacing out at that moment and more like dryly reciting a fact, Live Action-Ida's line holds much more emotional intonation, facial expression and especially gesturing.

Like rubbing his hands because it's cold.

Does that ring something? Oh yes, the setup for the touching hands misunderstanding in volume 5 starts as early as in chapter 3 in volume 1. As early as chapter 3.

And now I stare at this "walking slow" and feel even more bugged. Because now it's not just not really making any sense, it's binned the first introduction of a pretty plot relevant character trait.

Also, even if you insisted on the "slow", at least make it a reference to this from 4 pages before by using the same word?

Japanese: 気づくのおせーよ English release: Took you long enough to realize What I would have gone for: You're so slow on the pick-up.

おせ is a colloquial shortening of 遅い (osoi) which means both slow and being late. So yes, this is a perfectly valid translation in the English release. Really no complaints there for just this line. But it's also the only line that could have presented a chance to have that "slow" not come out of complete nowhere. (Although, it still would not make any sense to me for Aoki to say it after Ida's line and his thoughts of wanting to cry----)

Gnnnnnnnggh.

(I'm a notorious frostbite myself by now. This part of Ida is also just big mood.)

(Ok, there's still the rooftop scene in volume 4 which will hint on Ida's cold sensitivity, so it won't suddenly show up in v5 and come out of nowhere and that scene is so clear on that you really can't botch it.)

(This really doesn't destroy the narrative as a whole.)

(I really know the translator couldn't have seen this coming. And it's not like I noticed this on the first three glances either, before the drama snippets drew more attention to it.)

(And I do feel bad for nagging so much on the official manga translation. It's really not a translator's job to read everything after the volume being paid for, so how would they now. And clearly they have tried about this line.)

(And I'm probably also only noticing things because I'm too invested in this series in particular, which also isn't a translator's job.)

(Also judging by the AMV, it looks like the drama is following the source material faithfully in its essence and major plot points, but is still taking creative liberties for a number of details to make it flow more smoothly and a little bit less super-deformed slapstick. This has me intrigued now, because how often do you see an adaption that remembers its medium instead of just copy and pasting the source material. And for a change, the drama typical overacting that usually makes me cringe actually suits the tone of being expressly used to be funny.)
