Of all places to get kidnapped, this was one of the most embarrassing. Clint was on his way to pick up some good hearty German food from a nearby restaurant when he felt a tap on his shoulder, he spun around, and someone punched him hard in the head. As he stumbled back, someone put a bag over his head and punched him again, sending him into darkness.

When Clint came to, he was tightly bound to a chair, and everything was spinning. It was impressive, really, how badly his head hurt. He blinked, and then someone splashed a bucket of water on him. Clint sighed, shaking his head. At this point, cold water wasn’t so bad. He blinked the water out of his eyes and things came into focus. Five people, all in normal-looking clothing, surrounded him. “Just so you know, if you talk, I won’t be able to hear you,” he said. “My hearing aids are in my pocket.” One of them rolled her eyes and walked to a pile of things, where he saw his gun, fake wallet, phone, and trick bombs. Pity the skunk one hadn’t gone off. She dug through them, pulling out his hearing aids. Part of him wanted to smack her for touching them, but he didn’t say anything. She walked back to him and roughly inserted them. “Better?” she said. She had a heavy German accent. He nodded. “Good. Listen. We know you are Clint Barton, and we know you are here with Natasha Romanoff. Tell us where she is. We will let you go.” He blinked at her. “Hello? Can you hear me?” she snapped. “Yeah, yeah, I can hear you. I just don’t know why you think I’d do that,” he responded, sounding almost bored. “I mean, you have an Avenger in this shady abandoned mall. You didn’t even smash my phone. Why would you think that she’s not on her way right now, ready to kick your asses?” Another one of the men spoke up. “Because she’s one person. Against us five.” “Have you met her?” Clint laughed. One of them opened their mouth, but they all paused. One of them cocked their head to the side. Their eyes widened. And all of a sudden, two ran to him and put him in a headlock, the other three drew their guns and faced the door. The door slowly creaked open. Natasha stepped into the room, hands held up. They stared at her. She slowly walked forward, and when one of the men walked to her, she did not protest as he pulled her hands down and handcuffed her. Clint suppressed a grin. Those handcuffs couldn’t hold her. “Well, well. If it isn’t Natasha Romanoff,” the woman said. She flicked open a pocket knife and held it against Clint’s throat. He inhaled sharply, careful to not press against the blade. “What do you want?” she asked in German. “You have me. Let him go.” “No,” the woman replied. “We want information. What are you doing here? What is your government doing?” “Why would I tell you that?” Nat questioned, continuing to walk forward. “Because if you don’t, I will kill him and the children.” Clint’s eyes grew wide and broke into sweat. How did they know? Nat raised an eyebrow, ignoring Clint’s fear. “The children,” she repeated in disbelief. “Damn, you don’t know how to research your captives, do you?” “We know you’re lying,” one of the men said. He was clearly uncertain. “Yes, your children will die if you do not tell us,” the other man said. Clint exhaled. He had said your, talking to Natasha. They were lying. He looked at Nat again, and saw she was grinning. There was a faint click. He smiled as well. He was familiar with the sound of Nat breaking out of handcuffs. The guards didn’t even have a chance to take a step before Nat had made her move. In one swift motion, she flipped forward, grabbing her gun from her holster, shooting the overhead lights in a sparking explosion. She fired four rapid shots, and Clint could see three faint shadows fall to the ground. “STOP!” a voice yelled. The knife dug into his skin. Nat disappeared into the shadows, and Clint could feel the person holding the knife behind him look around. “Don’t you dare-”

A final bang went off, and the knife sliced open Clint’s shoulder. He screamed briefly as the body fell. Hot, hot blood ran down his chest and arm. It was deep, and Clint suddenly became aware of just how much blood was pouring out. And then Nat was there, dimly lit by the light, untying him and pressing a coat against the cut. “You seriously couldn’t get yourself out of these bonds?” she teased, though her heart wasn’t in it. The wound was bad. “Hey, I’m not you,” he replied dimly. “Stay awake, would you?” she said sharply, tying the coat tightly. “Can’t have you dying on me. That wouldn’t look good on my record.” Nat picked him up like a baby, and he let her. He was so tired. “I thought they knew…” he mumbled. “Shut up. Stay awake, but don’t talk.” He understood. They might still be alive. And then Nat was putting him on a motorbike and arranging the coat so he didn’t look like he had a huge gash. Nat sat in front of him and belted him in. Only a moment later, it felt like, Nat was lifting him up again and was taking him into the safehouse. He faded in and out of consciousness as Nat cleaned and stitched the wound. He vaguely thought to himself that if she wasn’t taking him to the hospital it couldn’t be that bad. And then he thought of his family, and how he had to keep them secret. But Nat was there. Even if he died, she would keep them safe. Auntie Nat would keep his family safe.

MERV I LOVE IT WHEN WE HAVE THE SAME BRAIN IT WOULD BE SOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! i've started writing a disabled and hoh!dean fic which is all about him coming to terms with being disabled and i'm defo including him reading these comics in them. they were a massive part of my hoh experience as i began to not just be hoh but Identify as hoh while reading them and they were maybe the first representation i'd really ever seen of myself. and god it's so accurate too and i feel like dean would see so much of himself in clint he'd had so many realisations. ANYWAY yeah those comics mean so much to me and so of course i'm putting them in the fic. i've written like 5 sentences of it so far akjhs but here is my current opening line:

All My Roads Lead Back to You Part 1

Hello, my beautiful readers! I should be working on “If I Rescue You, Will You Rescue Me, Too?” and that was the intent yesterday I swear. But I wanted to sit down and flesh out the first part of my “Eddie and Steve reconnect after years apart because their kids are in a rock band together AU”. Only I went from 680 words to 6020 words over the course of the day.

So um...yeah. I’m still working on “Rescue” but since I have so much of this ready, you’re going to get this for the next couple of days.

Just a couple of things, you can find the original idea for this on my Master List, but I don’t recommend reading it before this, because it makes the story a little less fun. The other thing is that in case it wasn’t clear enough the first part are all newspaper headlines.

Steve was a man of few regrets in his life. He had a job he enjoyed, a daughter he loved more than life, and close friends he could count on. One of his biggest regrets, though? Losing track of Eddie after Corroded Coffin’s bassist Brian Martin died in a tour bus rollover in Europe on their first world tour.

He knew that Robin and Dustin and probably some of the rest of the Party still kept in contact with Eddie, but after Steve was forced to miss Brian’s funeral...he wasn’t sure Eddie wanted him to contact him. So despite Dustin’s greatest efforts their lives remained separate.

“Hey, Dad!” Edith called from the kitchen.

Steve sighed into the bedroom mirror. He patted his hair down to hide the hearing aid. “Coming!”

He trotted out, grabbing his keys and wallet as he did so. His daughter was sitting at the counter happily munching on her cereal. Steve grinned when he saw her. She looked nothing like her mother, a fact Addison loathed. Edith had brown eyes and light brown hair with freckles, just like Steve.

“We finally have a new guitarist,” she said happily when she saw him. “But because we can’t have it at Lauren’s anymore...”

Steve sighed. “You want to use my garage as your studio?”

Edith grinned. “Pleaseee...”

Steve closed his eyes and opened them slowly to see her giving him the biggest pair of puppy dog eyes.

“All right,” he said. She started squealing and jumping for joy. “Only one day a week and if I have a migraine...”

She sighed, “We’ll keep it down.”

Steve ruffled her hair.

“Ugh...” she moaned. “It’s a good thing I don’t spend hours on my hair like you otherwise, I’d be really upset.”

Steve laughed. “Uncle Dusty keeps telling me it’s a miracle it hasn’t all fallen out yet.”

Edith smiled softly at him, before reaching up and gently tucking a lock of hair behind his left ear. “You’re the face of S&D, Dad. It’s not a crime to show off the goods.”

He ducked his head and blushed. “I know I wouldn’t be where I am without it but it chafes, you know.”

“You’re the father a seventeen year old girl,” Edith said with a wink, “I think you’re allowed to have a hearing aid.”

Steve sighed, too. “It just makes me feel older than I am.”

Edith shrugged. “You’re already old, so what’s a few more years difference?”

Steve raised his eyebrow and she squealed as he lunged for her. He kept up swimming and had taken up running. Edith on the other hand? She loathed sports. She claimed on more than one occasion that if anyone saw her running, they best start running too, because there was something chasing her.

A joke that didn’t go well with her dad or any of his friends for some reason she wasn’t privy to.

So she was an easy catch and he tickled her.

“No!” Edith huffed. “I’m too old for tickles!”

Steve stopped and cocked his head at her. “I still tickle Aunt Robin so...invalid argument.” And went back to tickling her.

Once she was gasping for breath, Steve let her up. “Now, Miss Thing, it’s time to get you to school.”

“Ugh...” she said, going to grab her backpack. “I hate school. Why can’t I just drop out?”

Steve raised an eyebrow. “Because last time I checked, I didn’t raise a quitter. And you only have a couple months left of this year and all of next.”

“I hate being a September baby,” she huffed dramatically. “I’m older than most of my class.”

He pulled her close and kissed her forehead. “You can blame your mom for that one.”

Edith smiled gratefully up at her dad. “It’s nice to have a scapegoat for all one’s ills in life.”

Steve laughed. “Thank god, for Addison Reed.”

Edith had to admit that there were certain parts of school that she enjoyed. She loved history and art. She didn’t know if she got that from her mom, as she had seen her mother all of three times in her memory. The first nine months of her life didn’t count.

Addison Reed had showed up when she was three when S&D had finally made it big and wanted more money from Dad. Again when she turned eight and Addison had taken her out for ice cream to try and charm Edith into giving up information on Dad so she could wheedle even more money out of him. The final time and the time that upset Dad the most was when Addison turned up when Edith was twelve to try and convince her to move in with her, so she could live off the child support.

That was when Dad got a restraining order against her, and moved them to Indiana from California. Edith missed the warm sunny days and the beaches, but she knew why Dad had done it. If moving back to Indiana was the only thing that would keep the leech away, Edith would have suggested it herself.

The other parts of school she liked were her friends. Mandy Lawrence and Kenny Grant. They had been a quartet, but Lauren decided she was too cool for them at the beginning of the year and stopped talking to them.

It was whatever.

She had art today which was a blessing because math was a killer and it always made her depressed. There was another reason she liked art class. Because that’s where she met this boy.

No, no not like that. Edith Barbara Harrington was a lesbian thank you very much. No, for all the kid’s fluffy brown hair, dimples and doe-eyes, she was interested in his ability to absolutely shred on guitar. His dad was some famous producer or some shit.

She walked up to him and fist bumped him. “H-man!”

“Miss Thing!” he greeted back. “Talked to my dad, but he said no go. He’s got too many valuable instruments he doesn’t want us touching.”

Edith grinned. “Well you’re in luck because my dad said yes.”

“Hell yeah!”

“So after school, k?” she said and he nodded. “I’ll text you the address.”

“Awesome!”

Their teacher called out for them to sit down and they did so with a grumble.

Edith couldn’t wait for after school.

He got slightly better with the tv show. but. comics!clint is a disaster of a human being who drinks coffee straight from the pot and can't go 2 straight weeks without falling off a building. yes he's a superhero but he's also the most relatable human disaster in existence. movie!clint is just... boring. he's your standard white dude with a military background. none of the actual fun bits of his character made it onto the screen! he's so boring that they had to give him a wife and 2.5 children to try and make the audience care about his life in AoU

He’s pretty cool in the comics but not only did they completely neglect his character in the movies (we’re talking no characterization whatsoever, like five minutes of screen time total, absolutely dismal), they chose Jeremy Renner to play him. Fuck that guy. Hawkeye in the comics is deaf/hard of hearing, and they could’ve done really cool things with that concept in the movies but they didn’t? He could’ve been cool representation but they didn’t write him to be hoh at all. Fucked.

Things about the Barton kids that I thought up:

Cooper Barton cannot aim for the life of him. (Potential joke: “Unfortunately, aim is not hereditary, as proven by Cooper Barton.”)

All of the Barton kids are varying degrees of HoH and D/deaf. It’s a hereditary trait. Clint thought he was going deaf because of the explosions he was around, but he didn’t realize he was wrong until Cooper failed a hearing test.

All of them consider Kate a sister, to the point that Nathaniel actually thinks she’s related to them.

Lila does not grow up to be another Hawkeye–she ends up trying to redeem her father’s name as Ronin (this is assuming Maya Lopez doesn’t wind up Ronin.)

It’s Nathaniel that winds up as the Hawkeye after Kate.

Cooper wants to be a cartoonist. Everytime he hears stories from his siblings and their friends about the fights they were in, he draws comics of them. (He occasionally does collaborations with Sloth Baby Studios.)

Cooper’s middle name is Barney. No one will explain why.

When Nathaniel eventually becomes fluent in ASL, D/deaf or not, he prefers to use sign language. (It’s a language you can speak silently and underwater, it is freaking awesome.)

Lila has monthly fencing sessions with Kate.

Laura Barton has had to call 911 for her kids so many times that she is now on a first name basis with all of the operators.

This is probably going to be another Harley Keener situation where Marvel forgets about them, but I just thought these might be fun ideas.

Fannish Fest February day 4: My Favorite Bit of Fannish History

Bangpath character notation.

I’ve talked about it before, including in my Ao3 Metatext Guide, but I love bangpath notation.

Whenever you see something like aro!Geralt, HoH!Clint, book!Sophie, or Vulcan!Uhura that’s bangpath notation.

It’s a way of designating a version of a character when there are multiple available versions or possible interpretations, or indicating that you specifically mean or are using a version of the character with a particular trait that is different from canon or not defined in canon.

Whats so cool about it to me, is its roots. This notation comes from some of the earliest email systems back when “internet” was just the intranets of a few colleges linked to each other.

If you were in the biology department and you wanted to send an email to Bob who’s also in biology, his email “address” was probably just Bob. Cuz your net mostly operates within the bio department, and he’s the only Bob here.

But if you want to send something to the Bob in the physics department, you’d direct the email like Phys!Bob to tell the system to send that message to the relay in the physics department and then to that Bob. Once different colleges got connected you might end up with MIT!Phys!Bob, and soon after that the bob@phys format we’re used to took over.

But early internet fandom, as with all things early internet, was being done by the freaking nerds who were busy at those colleges inventing the internet as we know it, so they took the notion system they knew to specify which Bob they meant to email and used it to specify which version of Spock they meant.

And it stuck around in fandom way longer than it stuck around for email! It’s still used today! Not as much as it used to be, but I saw it in a post about the Witcher yesterday. And I think that’s cool!

i need to dump my saiki k mha au headcanons before i go insane

-kusuos relationship with his brother is much worse. kusuke is way worst than he is in canon, actively being a dangerous horrible menace of a brother kusuos just thinks it’s fine bc he has powers. hes aware their relationship is problematic but he’s also got this mentality of oh it’s not like he can actually hurt me so it’s fine right

-i am such a sucker for poly pk psychics so they are all dating<3 auira and toritsuka have been dating for a bit but they’re both having trouble in the relationship cause they both also have feelings for kusuo. they confess right after ending of season 2 and then somehow akechi gets pulled into it. it’s a whole thing. they’ve all been kinda therapapizing him and letting him know it’s okay to show his emotions more and also realize how toxic his brother is being all the time.

-kusuos canonically loses control of his powers when he’s emotional so i think he would have a lot of issues with dissociating. just because it’s so dangerous if he gets to emotional. the polypkpschics have been to help him with it

-immediately gets adopted by present mic. mic sees him for three seconds and is like😱another to add to my collection. he’s very gay and very married to aizawa and very has already adopted shinsou and eri. mic is also hoh due to his quirk because he has the vibes(quirky adhd they/them who talks too much love you clint)

-kusuo is so autism he’s the most autism ever to exist. he’s the king of masking and the polypkpschics especially akechi try to make him feel comfortable and like he doesn’t have to mask. he hates looking people in the eyes and literally refuses to talk to people without using telepathy. he also physically has a hard time talking because he literally never uses his vocal cords and they’re very weak. his biggest stim is sitting on the floor, sitting perfectly still and listening to music very loudly with headphones. loves that deep pressure but nothing is ever deep enough cause his powers mess with it so sometimes he goes to the bottom of the ocean bc of the water pressure and just vibes for a while until he feels better

hello :) this is super random but i was looking through some of your old art cause i freakin love it and i saw your comic about being 'the dumb kid' and then finding out it was because of hearing issues and it was fucking amazing to see because that's exactly what's happening to me. i'm only now getting diagnosed with hearing-related stuff when before they just thought i was dumb and didn't care and it's such a relief and so cool to see one of my favorite artists had the same experience :)

also i LOVE to see actual real deaf or hard of hearing/hard of hearing adjacent people making fanart of deaf characters (clint lol) and actually getting it right cause the amount of really ignorant stuff about deafness/hoh in the hawkeye fandom is exhausting so it's just so cool to see artists/creators who have the actual knowledge/experience.
