Nightcrawler was created by Cockrum while he was still in the Navy during the Vietnam War, loooooonnnnnnnggggggg before the X-Men had been revived.  Once he began working on DC Comic’s Legion of Super-Heroes series, Cockrum wanted to introduce Nightcrawler into the series as part of a team called The Outsiders (which had nothing to do with this team -

or this team- )

However, DC rejected both Nightcrawler and The Outsiders.  Cockrum then took his characters with him when he moved to Marvel, and the rest is comic book history.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Bebop Beatniks playing “Gotta Lotta”

Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear one of my jazz pieces played by Bebop Beatniks at the Delta Jazz Workshop.

The ASU Jazz Department holds the Delta Jazz Workshop during the summer, right here at ASU. Every evening they have a jazz concert and before the pandemic, Bebop Beatniks held down the Wednesday night slot. On July 10, 2019, we played one of my songs called “Gotta Lotta”.

I was on piano. Also playing were Jay Shepherd, guitar; Emily Lindley, vibes; Jeremy Jackson, bass; and Alex Washam, drums. All of the musicians are from Northeast Arkansas and most of them studied jazz at ASU.

The song features Jay and I trading choruses and inspiring each other with our improvisation.

This song was released in December, 2022, as track 1 on the new Bebop Beatniks live album, “Church”. The album is a retrospective of Bebop Beatniks originals recorded from 2016 through 2019. We recorded the studio album, “Leaves” but we never released a live album before which was just wrong because Bebop Beatniks has always been primarily a live band.

Thanks Marty. Today we’re going to hear the Queen of Memphis Blues sing a song her husband wrote about his ex.

Vivian and I have known Reba Russell and her husband Wayne since the nineties, back in the Blues-L days. I’ve heard her play at The King Biscuit Blues Festival, the Arkansas Roots Festival, and the KASU Blue Monday and Bluesday Tuesday shows. Before the pandemic my band, The Emporium Orkestra, would entertain blues fans at The Biscuit with our morning shows and Reba and Wayne would stop by to listen and eat breakfast.

The song we’re hearing today was recorded at KASU Bluesday Tuesday on November 13, 2012. I was singing with Delta Vox at Riceland Hall that night so Mike Doyle, who was then the station manager at KASU, made the recordings. And since I couldn’t run sound for Reba, Mike asked Sonny Burgess to do the sound work. As you will hear, they both did great.

Reba introduces the band including Doug McMinn on drums. Doug is the son of Papa Don McMinn, another Memphis Blues Legend. Don McMinn passed away in 2017.

And then there’s a whole story about the song that Wayne wrote for his ex-wife. I’m gonna let Reba tell you about that, better than I possibly could.

Under the influence of the potion he mutilates the faces anyone he sees who might be a threat to his beauty. If he was cruel before he is horrific now. Watson would become a fanatic obsessed with justice, almost a crusader of sorts as he loses the part of him that is humble or empathetic under the influence of the potion. He'd be younger and stronger but all of his softness would be gone. I imagine he'd look larger and more square as this is already a major part of his personality, it's just been amplified and all the temperance removed. Quincey would be similar to Edward, small, hairy and dwarfish but he's not inherently cruel, he'd be more playful and impish. Quincey is at an age where he's expected to act like and adult so in daily life he tends to act mature and take the high road. With his new persona he'd sneak into movies, go to bars and forget about his responsibilities or the impending weight of picking a career and settling into adult life.

Larry would also find himself more energetic and talkative, he'd be confident, almost to the point of arrogance and give in to kleptomaniac urges. If he sees what he wants he'll steal it. She'd be massive and terrible to look at. Theo would become smaller. She'd become a fragile and lost little creature that can't stop crying because deep down she's fearful that there's nothing left of her anymore except dregs that can't be loved by anyone. She'd be repulsive to look at but she'd beg and cling to anyone who got near her not to leave her.

Erik would become ordinary. He would not be a genius, not gifted with music, not possessing of a horrifying temper or visage just an average man who could go out to the park and sit and watch birds and maybe have a conversation with some strangers. He wouldn't even notice that he doesn't remember how to play a violin. It would scare him how happy it makes him to be "just Erik," with nothing else to him. Adam would become physically attractive but obsessive and shallow. He'd look like the version of himself Victor had wanted to create and he'd even call his inverse "Victor" because there's still something in him that needs some part of Victor to still be alive. Even if it's only because Adam refuses to bury him and let him rest. He'd indulge himself in all the things he could never have as Adam but rather than making him happy he'd still find he resents "Victor" for having what "Adam" cannot. When he's "Victor" he feels disdain for "Adam" and when he's Adam he is jealous of "Victor"
