The tiny Wet Wood World (www) of one log provided me not only with the pink mites, but also two species of Neelid! 😍 The little grey lumps are much bigger than the pale one (Neelus murinus possibly). I had not seen the grey ones in Florida until now!

[VIDEO TAKEN: FEBRUARY 21ST, 2024 | Video ID: A video zooming in on and showing two yellow globular springtails roaming on a leaf sticking out of the water, one smaller and more mobile than the other /End ID.]
Kind of hard to get quality video of these beasties with how tiny they are, but it's super nice to see springtails in the wild!

[PHOTOS TAKEN: JULY 3RD, 2023 | Image IDs: Two photos of a very small brown springtail on the second knuckle of a human finger, blurred green and brown grass in the background /End IDs.]
Very exciting seeing a wild springtail, for me! This is one of three types of hexapods (arthropods with six legs) that are currently not considered insects, this being of the group Collembola while the others are Protura (coneheads) and Diplura (two-pronged bristletails)

Snow flea (Hypogastrura nivicola)
Neither a flea, nor exclusive to snowy regions, the snow flea shares the subphylum hexapoda (literally "six legs") with other insects, but is classified as a springtail. Springtails are hardly talked about as a class, but it is estimated that there are 250 000 000 individual springtails per acre of ground worldwide, making them more abundant than even insects—they're just hiding underground!
These miniature creatures, which reach only 1-2 millimetres in length, are dubbed fleas due to their amazing ability to propulse themselves into the air. They do not jump, however; they have a furcula, an appendage at the end of their abdomen, which allows them to fling themselves into the air. And don't worry: unlike fleas, snow fleas do not bite, and are entirely harmless to humans and animals alike!
Snow fleas are capable of thriving in subzero temperatures, and can frequently be found coming up from their underground burrows on warm winter days to travel across the snow. They owe their anti-freezing capabilities to a glycine-rich protein which prevents the formation of ice crystals in their tissue. Research-wise, scientists have been able to synthesize this protein, and hope to use it to facilitate organ transplants.
