i had the best bsd famous no powers au headcanons because i got the mental image of dazai saying he “hates” chuuya and none of his friends should listen to him because chuuya sucks and atsushi sadly putting the chuuya poster he wanted to buy back

and also “wait so dazai can sleep with chuuya but i cant listen to his music??? wtf ???”

most of them would be in the entertainment btw but a few exceptions here and there

okay first of all a lot of the ways every one met every one would be different for the sake of like creative liberty sfakdj like dazai and atsushi would have met earlier ; i would probably not put akutagawa in the music industry so his relationship with dazai would be different - but i havent actually worked any of that out yet so ignore this

anyway

first of all - a key plot point would be that chuuya and dazai had a falling out - and i mean an actual falling out like they cant stand anyone bringing the other up

which really sucks for the ada becuz like chuuya’s music >>>>>>>>>>>

anyway here are what i think some of the characters would be like

chuuya:

- he rose to fame as a teenager - he’s wildly known for his good music and his smexy face

- a good portion of younger artists like his music and look up to him

- he likes writing his own music but sometimes feels conscious about more dark/personal songs

- had a falling out with dazai at some point becuz of this he does not like ppl listening to the music that comes from dazai’s friends but he does secretly like a lot of their songs

- has secret social media accounts to stalk dazai

- has cried becuz he convinced himself at some point about dazai ‘being with’ almost everyone at the agency (at different time periods) and was not right even once

- every single one of his friends knows that half of his music is obviously about dazai but no one knows how to bring it up

- every one’s favorite thirst trap

- you know how a product will appear for a .000000000000000001 sec w/ a bts member and immediately get sold out ?? yeah thats how it is for him

- he’s very strict about crediting ppl - like someone will say like two words to him that’ll inspire him and he’ll credit them as co-writer

dazai:

- im not sure if i want him to be a singer or not but he’s definitely involved in other aspects such as writing producing etc

- HATES chuuya

- so much that he’s constantly thinking about him like the pathetic wet cat that he is

- he has forbidden everyone in the agency from listening to chuuya’s music

- there may or may not be a secret underground community within the ada that listens to chuuya’s music and fangirls over him and it may or may not include everyone but dazai

- when someones mad at dazai they blast chuuya’s music

- *listening to chuuya’s music, secretly* wait is this fucking song about me ? ... nah

- atsushi once wrote a song about dazai and how glad that he was that he had a brother figure like dazai and dazai cried for 24 hours straight

- atsushi is no longer allowed to casually write about him

- he acts really playful and aloof but he streams all of his friends music religiously and is secretly their biggest fan

- has tried to convince everyone he knows that sings to sing his suicide song - no one has agreed yet

- he has trouble finding inspiration but when he does he latches on - sometimes he’ll disappear for days and then come back with the most perfect songs

- really only openly nice and supportive to atsushi tbh

atsushi

- i want him to be with dazai earlier becuz i think it would let their dynamic really settle and atsushi trauma-response personality won’t be as prominent if that makes sense

- atsushi’s favorite musician is everyone :D no im kidding thats what he says but its actually chuuya

- yeah he’s the younger brother of dazai (not sure if their kinda like brothers or just adopted brothers or what yet) and he’s in love with chuuya it runs in the family

- he’s in a band

- it’s called snow beneath the moonlight - it’s him, naomi, and junichiro

- maybe they’ll add lucy and/or kyouka but idk

- atsushi’s the main singer - juni’s on drums - naomi’s on guitar - but they switch around for the funsies

- im gonna create a separate section for them actually and keep the focus on atsushi for now

- atsushi’s solo music is....

- the first album he released came after weeks and weeks of people spotting him going to the studio in bright fun clothes - and he posted a lot of fun things

- so everyone thought it’d be a fun, motivational bop album

- it was so fucking sad like holy shit what the fuck atsushi go to fucking therapy

- really good tho :>

- like if you could u would inject his voice into ur veins

- ya know lyn lapid’s song detached

- if atsushi sang that itd be about akutagawa btw im not saying anything but i am

- a lot of his clothes are styled by rashomon - a fashion brand owned by the akutagawa siblings - half because of however celeb - brand partnerships work - half because he somehow became ryuu’s muse

- i want him to live with dazai - which is one of the reasons why they need to meet earlier because i had the mental image of atsushi talking about moving out and “yeah so i moved out of my brother’s place and ya know it’s strange. good at times but strange. Like i can do so many things i was never allowed to - like i can get wasted, try acid, invite someone for the night, buy chuuya nakahara posters, put up my chuuya nakahara posters, listen to chuuya nakahara’s music, own chuuya nakahara’s albums”

- since i think dazai would probably let atsushi drink as long as he’s not insane about it , throw kunikida in there too

- has a lot of songs about ryuu but he’ll never tell him

- ryuu listening to any love song by atsushi “wait is this fucking song about me??? ...nah”

- he may or may not be fucking ryuunosuke akutagawa i cannot deny or confirm anything

akutagawa:

- he owns a fashion brand with his sister solely becuz i showed him to my friend a few months ago and i said “sorry he dresses like a sad vampire victorian orphan thing” and she said “that is the sexiest man i have ever seen” or something like that its been a hot second

- may or may not be in love with atsushi you cant prove it - well okay sure he has collection after collection inspired by atsushi but-

- okay so maybe he listens to atsushi’s music when he’s coming up with designs but-

- okay so maybe he has all of atsushi’s albums hidden where atsushi cant find them but-

- okay so maybe atsushi’s been at his place enough for akutagawa to think ‘oh no what if he finds all the albums’ but-

- anyway

- he had a lot of goth, punk, etc, vibes and stuck to a dark, muted color range

- and then one day dropped a gold-violet colored bright not-at-all-like-his-previous-stuff collection and pretended it was normal

snow beneath the moonlight - band

members: atsushi, junichiro, naomi

- it was started in highschool by juni going to atsushi and being like ‘wanna start a band’ and atsushi, who was sleeping a little cardboard box in the spot where the sun was, was like “hmmm? um sure zzzzzzzzz” if that makes sense

- naomi found out about it and joined before atsushi and juni could ask her

- so typically it’s atsushi on vocals, naomi on guitar, juni on drums, but they can be pretty versatile like atsushi’s usually got a guitar on him sorry i cant think of the words rn and juni can play the piano and naomi can do all of that

- naomi and juni sing too if they want - theyre not strict about roles

- they wrote their music together in highschool

- they still do - but now when their stuck they dont cry they ask others for help :)

- very sweet and fun vibes

- they literally just do whatever they want - if there is a style or genre they want to try they probably will

- naomi has to do a lot of the talking becuz juni gets uncomfy and atsushi’s attention span causes him to leave ppl mid conversations becuz he saw a cool leaf

- not sure if oda and his orphans will be alive but itd be weird to kill them off in this au for me but idk

- oda’s a writer

- poe is also a writer

- idk where to stick ranpo in becuz it hard for me to imagine him being anything but the world’s best detective

- i kind of want yosano to be in the industry but i also want her to be a doctor

- the ada is just fukuzawa’s adopted children that do whatever they want career wise becuz of him - nepotism babies btu theyre all orphans

- kyouka’s a singer and so is kenji

- katai’s a producer

- kunikida’s someones manager but who knows whose he only ever babysits dazai and the rest of hte agency

- so as you can see im still working out the kinks of this au

- q is that child artist that you love but cant help but wonder fi theyre being exploited

- the ada is so chaotic and disorganized and half the ppl there arent even in the industry but it’s just a cover for fukuzawa’s children so it still works

stranger things the first shadow and jekyll and hyde and carl jung’s concept of the shadow and edward creel is vecna and i can prove it

So! This caught my eye today:

I know there’s a lot of talk regarding how the MF is also called the shadow monster, and I’m sure that plays into it somehow, but I also wanted to talk about Carl Jung’s theory of the shadow. Jung’s theory is basically as follows:

The Personal Shadow

“The personal shadow is comprised of those qualities, impulses, and emotions that we cannot bear for others to see and thus cast into the hidden domain of ourselves. It is made up of the parts of ourselves we deem unacceptable. For many people this means things like our sadness, rage, laziness, and cruelty.”

Keep this above definition in mind.

"The personal shadow personifies everything that the subject refuses to acknowledge about himself and represents ‘a tight passage, a narrow door, whose painful constriction no one is spared.’”

Staring directly at the fact that the art of Henry for The First Shadow parallels the poster of Will looking out a door, at the shadow monster and there’s so much door imagery in ST. Will’s even got his shadow behind him, just like Henry does.

TLDR: a personal shadow is basically everyone’s “bad” qualities but they’re not always inherently bad.

Jekyll and Hyde are considered an example of somebody vs their shadow self/personal shadow.

“If we hold certain values and recognise these consciously then the opposite values may form part of our shadow. The shadow is not just restricted to values but the example of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde illustrates the point well. Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde clearly manifested different values and these were translated into differences in their behaviours. Taking this further we can also see that sharing values would lead to a ‘shared’ shadow – the opposite of these values. The group would collectively hold unconscious and opposite values with the potential for projection.” (source)

The Collective Shadow

And so, remember how I said that I think that the Shadow Monster/the MF would play into this? Well, part of the shadow theory is something called a collective shadow.

Long story short, the collective shadow is considered the dark side of humanity, the sum of all past and present atrocities and abuses.

And we know that Henry had a whole speech about the dark side of humanity.

“The collective shadow, like the personal shadow, is relative in that it will be partially culturally determined/dependent on culture. It consists of things which opposes a culture’s conscious, shared and collective values.”

I won’t be surprised if the Shadow Monster/Mindflayer is meant to be representative of a collective shadow, a representation of the shared hateful/biogted beliefs of the people of Hawkins, a representation of all of the atrocities and abuse that’s occurred, including to people like Henry (in the lab and in the Creel house, ESPECIALLY considering the stage play being in 1959/tied to the Creels moving to Hawkins and also tied to the idea of the shadow via the title). But the people of Hawkins aren’t all inherently awful, because the shadow represents the opposite of their values/beliefs, and some peoples’ values/beliefs contradict eachother’s.

The First Shadow

So- the first shadow? It’d possibly be either a.) the first Henry/the original Henry or b.) the first new, separate sort of Henry, possibly a separate consciousness or an entirely separate Henry (staring at the Henry Creel vs Edward Creel weirdness in the Creel murder newspapers, staring at Henry Jekyll and Edward Hyde being the full names of Jekyll and Hyde). And keeping in mind that Edward Hyde was Henry Jekyll’s shadow- so then, Edward Creel would be Henry Creel’s shadow. And look at that art for the stage play again:

In this image, who is literally Henry’s shadow?

Vecna.

In the Henry Jekyll vs Edward Hyde and Henry Creel vs Edward Creel section, who was Henry Jekyll’s shadow?

Edward Hyde.

Which makes Edward Creel the shadow of Henry Creel. But Vecna is also Henry’s literal shadow in that image- oh wait, that makes both Vecna and Edward Henry’s shadow. Don’t people just have one personal shadow, though?

Yes. Because Vecna and Edward Creel are the same person. Henry Creel is not Vecna, Edward Creel is. Vecna and Edward are interchangeable, and they’re both Henry’s shadow, just like how Edward Hyde is the shadow of Henry Jekyll.

Edward is Vecna, not Henry. Even simply in a metaphorical sense, Henry is not the same as Vecna, Vecna is Henry’s shadow.

Conclusion

We’ve got the personal shadow, the collective shadow, and the first shadow.

And the personal shadow is considered the bridge to the collective shadow, in the sense that the collective shadow is made up of humanity’s personal shadows.

So, Henry’s shadow was likely the first one, the first shadow in that collective shadow- and what does the collective shadow represent? What is it comprised of? The atrocities and abuses of humanity and the values deemed negative by a culture. So, Henry himself being an outcast and being deemed negative as a child, and abused by the town and by the lab, and becoming the first atrocity in the collective shadow over Hawkins, the first personal shadow in that collective shadow.

Everything with the shadow sounds so extremely Vecna, with how he’s showing his S4 victims their own shadows, the parts of themselves that they refuse to acknowledge, the parts of themselves that conflict with their egos and ideals.

To confront one’s shadow is considered to be confronting the truth- and Jamie himself said that Vecna is fixated on truth.

And again, the collective shadow is made up of personal shadows. So, if you want to resolve the collective shadow/kill the shadow monsters, you need to resolve everyone’s personal shadows first.

Which is what Vecna was doing. He was literally forcing his victims to confront their personal shadows. He is attempting to kill and change the collective shadow of Hawkins because of how that shadow/those cultural beliefs have outcast and hurt him. But because he’s doing it by committing atrocities, he’s simply creating a new collective shadow/shifting those values/being a hypocrite. He think he’s destroying those hateful/harmful values, but instead, he’s just making his own twisted/still harmful version of them. I’ve talked repeatedly and constantly about characters like Vecna and Eddie being hypocrites and how for all of things Henry lists in his “eat sleep wake up,” monologue, he himself has his own twisted version of things, and this ties in perfectly with the collective shadow theory and the idea that Vecna is trying to destroy the collective shadow/bigotry/hate/abuse of Hawkins but is enforcing his own bigotry/hate/abuse in the process.

And going back to Henry not being Vecna, remember how the personal shadow is defined?

“It is made up of the parts of ourselves we deem unacceptable. For many people this means things like our sadness, rage, laziness, and cruelty.”

And so, if Vecna is Henry’s shadow (which, that’s exactly what we see on the poster), then that means that Vecna is comprised of things/traits that Henry deems unacceptable. Meaning that Henry didn’t share the same values as Vecna/Edward. Meaning that Henry is a good guy. Which, that doesn’t mean Edward is evil, especially not with the idea of Vecna being the result of Brenner merging himself with Edward, and Vecna and *Edward’s* values being different.

It’s also worth noting that Henry himself is very paralleled to Mairon (Sauron’s form before he became evil), and Annatar (his fake good form), but Vecna is the one paralleled to Sauron. Sauron, who poured his cruelty and his malice into the one ring. Sauron, who is described frequently as a shadow.

TLDR: timeline weirdness and Henry Creel vs Edward Creel and Edward is Vecna, Henry is not Vecna, and Henry is not responsible for Vecna’s actions.

5 BL characters in 2023 who you would help hide a body

*cracks knuckles* @wen-kexing-apologist I had things to do today! Let's not lie I was already not doing them so let's go.

I am notoriously bad at keeping my lists down to any reasonable number so I'm going to give myself very specific parameters: This is a character who (a) I love so deeply I would do anything for them, (b) they would murder someone, and (c) there is someone in their show who, if they murdered, I would support their gay crime. Ok with those caveats let's see how I do [spoiler alert: I failed pretty badly].

Ji Hyun, The Eighth Sense

Ji Hyun came from the country to the big city, saw a hot guy on a poster and decided "yep I'm going to learn to surf even though I can't actually swim". He almost died and decided to lean into his convictions even MORE. He sasses out his senior and isn't put off by his lover ghosting him. Luckily for them the people in Jae Won's life figured themselves out and apologized, because Ji Hyun was not going to put up with more of their bullshit. I would do anything for this man and I fully believe if pushed he would do anything for his.

Noey Watplu, I Will Knock You

Noey is a kid who ended up running a gang mostly out of care for his community. He thinks he's so much tougher than he is, but his bravado and endless self-confidence get him through so much. Still, if he hadn't turned away from that gangster lifestyle, he definitely would have gotten in trouble at some point and I would have been with the other aunties at the food stalls helping deal with the mess.

Dung from Mr Cinderella S2

He has had a rough life, but is extremely kind, and I always stan a man who stays beside his in the face of external threats, but who also has healthy boundaries about how he's treated. The people in Khoa's life who keep messing with their relationship in both seasons....I'm not advocating murder, but if they happened to die, I would be there helping make sure they didn't mess with them anymore.

Ueangphueng and Fongkaew, I Feel You Linger in the Air

I just want these women to be happy and safe (with Mai). And if there's anyone on this list who deserved to murder someone as a treat, it's them. I love so much that they teamed up to take down their husband. I love so much that they found strength in one another. I would absolutely help them bury whoever they needed me to. And in a time when justice would not have been served for what they actually experienced, do I think they could have gone there if they hadn't found the other evidence to take him down? Absolutely, and I respect them for it.

Namnuea, Wedding Plan

This is cheating against my own rules because I don't think he would actually kill anyone but I'd do it for him and I know he'd help me hide the body so I'm counting it. I love this man. He also could technically fit into the ending category because he is (rightfully) surrounded by people who love and protect him, but count me in.

Amane, If It's With You

This is now just a favourites list but listen. I was ready to throw down for him immediately re: that high school crush, and as we got more of him and saw how brave he was through this series my love grew exponentially. He is mine and I would protect him in any way necessary, including helping him bury a very unlikely body.

Hira, My Beautiful Man

I love Kiyoi as a character so much and want desperately to protect him, but I don't need to we have Hira for that. Hira, on the other hand, canonically fantasizes about murdering his classmates because they're a little mean to Kiyoi, he's way more likely to need my help. And I love his complete disaster self so much. His arc is so slow across the seasons/movie and I know some folks got frustrated with him but he's starting from such an incredibly messed up place that the way his growth spirals makes perfect sense and is very relatable.

Koki, One Room Angel

This guy keeps getting into gang fights even though he's not in a gang, he's very likely to need me. And as a stoic, sad, quietly kind and perpetually misunderstood gay man, he immediately fell into my Love Forever and Protect With All of my Might bucket.

Kat, the Warp Effect

Listen, Kat could and would (and yes I chose this gif intentionally to invoke Wild Things). She doesn't need to because she has a wonderful group of friends who rally around her, but if anything else went down in her life and she had to choose violence, I'd be there with a shovel.

Ryunosuke, Tokyo in April Is...

I don't mean to imply that we want to murder our protagonists lol All three of the men in this show could ask me to bury a body and I'd say yes, but Ryunosuke is the one who might actually take advantage. Ryunosuke was fully evaluating Kazuma in this scene and he had good reason to. I fully believe if he found Kazuma wanting he'd find a way to make him disappear if he had to. In any case, Ryunosuke is in my bucket of favourite characters from this year and I would do anything for him.

Uea, Middleman's Love

It's cheating that he's here because really the people I'd love to help him bury were all in Bed Friend but in my defense I'll say that his energy in this show was 100% "if you hurt Jade who is too precious to exist I will end you", and I support him on this.

Misaki, Me, My Husband, and my Husband's Boyfriend

This woman went through so much self-reflection and growth. At the start of the show she couldn't hurt anyone but herself, but by the end? She was ready to hold boundaries and fight for her own happiness even if she doesn't yet know what that is and I am here to support that even if it turns out to be violence. I can't find any gifs of her in her happiness and I'm very sad about it

Nai, Shadow the Series

Dan is a monsterfucker and so he has my whole heart, but Nai is the one most likely to need my services. While Dan is in his feelings and obsessed with the supernatural mystery in the show, Nai is in the real world gathering information, setting up their bully as a fall guy, and generally being brilliant. Here for him and all his gay wrongs.

Bonus

Folks I don't need to help bury a body because they already have people for that, but who I absolutely could not keep off this list!

Maya, Rose, and Charn, Laws of Attraction and Ai Di, Kiseki: Dear to Me

While I think Abigail loves Sarah, I think she’s always recognized Sarah’s massive potential and pushed too hard for that reason- she just wanted her baby to be great. That, and Abigail doesn’t know how to love- not traditionally, as one might come to expect from a parent. She’s just…cold. 🥺

-Two of the ONLY ways to get Sarah to unwind when she’s all tense: sex and music. First one is self explanatory, second one I think due to the fact that she’s a musician, and she can only think about things in terms of patterns, logic, etc. she can really zone into music and let it take her mind off whatever is bothering her, and that never goes away with age. Jade learns her favorite songs, her favorite bands, gifts her with posters to make her feel like a teen again 💕 Jade loves learning about Sarah’s hobbies and interests outside of their work. Her hot drummer scientist gf is her world

- Sarah still drums on things with her fingertips when she’s anxious (including Jade!)

- Sarah “decided” love wasn’t for her after Cassiopeia and her subsequent return to civilization. Flings? Maybe? If her judgement is impaired? Generally speaking I think she closed herself off to feeling anything too personal after that, for fear of breaking down again. So when she meets Jade and Jade starts infuriating her to the point of passion…it reopens that door. She feels again. Granted, she feels annoyance, but a-ton of attraction too!

And then…Jade makes her feel happy. Safe. Wanted. So, needless to say, Sarah grows addicted to the feeling. Now she can’t bear to lose Jade. 💔

- I think Sarah is the jealous type. Not overtly or to the point of being annoying about it- but she doesn’t enjoy Nadia Muffaz ogling Jade, and she makes it known. She especially doesn’t love the idea of Jade getting it on with Captain Marquez lol, bc there’s a history there. She didn’t think she’d have a love like this- didn’t even think it possible. She’s NOT losing her girl to that shill of a reporter 😭 (sorry Nadia love u)

-Sarah definitely crushed hard on Aja, even if their relationship only ever resembled that of close friends. She grew out of it, and that crush solidified into respect, but she was a wide-eyed, eager apprentice at some point with a crush on her superior (just don’t tell Jade)

-Sarah is a little bit of an alcoholic, and she’s aware of it. She’s under a lot of stress in the course of the story- so give her a break. But it’s something she wants to work on. Much like the cigarettes she quit (but carries one in case of dire emergency-as we know)- it’s a vice she’s learning to deal with, and hopefully kick. I think she smoked in her youth (trying to be a rebel on/after Cydonia!!)- and forced herself to quit when she joined up with the military officially. Drinking is more of a response to the trauma of Cassiopeia. They also have a big ass open bar in the Lodge and should probably do away with the drinks there 😭💀

-she doesn’t see herself as mother material. This one is, again, pretty obvious- but still. Sona’s existence obviously changes a lot for her- but Sarah is so frightened of the term “mother”. She’s afraid of the kind of mother she’d be- she’s afraid she doesn’t know how to love properly, due to Abigail’s treatment of her. She’s stern when she should be soft, scolding when she could be nurturing- in her own eyes, of course. I think Jade is the one that melts these fears away with time and love. Jade constantly points out to her that she is maternal, that their team relies on her for everything, that she is kind and caring and incredibly loving. I think, there might come a time, where Sona recognizes Sarah as her mother. But that’s very far off from where we are 🥹

-Sarah is a baller. I HC that she and Walter make more than the others (as Jade likes to bitch about nearly every chapter lol) BUT what is she doing with that income??? Buying hotel rooms so she can fuck and get absolutely drilled in peace. Buying Jade a new jacket bc she got feisty and ripped her old one as she was tearing it off her. She’s smart, hot, loaded and not opposed to lavishing Jade with nice things. She is the dream wife™️

-Sarah can cook! Jade can’t. We never really got to have domesticity with them but if they ever got to just…live together and make dinner… it would be Sarah doing the cooking and Jade constantly wrapping herself around her and distracting her.

-Sarah is so protective of the members of her inner circle. Andreja is her beloved 🥰 (and Jade’s tbh- throuple? Throuple.) but fr- she is the one who gave Andreja that second chance! She saw through her, past the deceit and orders, and saw a young, vulnerable girl, too frightened to return her gaze. And she welcomed her with open arms. 🥺❤️

-she never liked Lillian Hart (she’s…not the best person in Stellar lol). I think she was just so devastated for Sam when things went down like they did- which is what fueled her argument with Lillian in the Lodge. Then Lillian went on to tear into Jade…so naturally Sarah almost snapped and put hands on her.

- Sarah really likes hazelnut coffee, and Noel noticed this once. Idk if it was her favorite. I think, when Jade gave her that hazelnut coffee that one morning in the Lodge, it truly became Sarah’s favorite. Like…she lied just so she’d have an excuse to talk to Jade every morning 😭💀

-this is more about Sarah’s jacket than Sarah lol but Jade really really really would like to see Sarah wearing just the jacket. Even Sarah’s jacket has game 😏

-Jade likes picking flowers for Sarah just so she can hear her nerd gf babble about what species she’s brought her this time. Sarah loves to go off on excited rants regarding subjects she’s most passionate about. Jade likes watching her speak and listening to her accent 😍 when Sarah realizes Jade is zoning out and staring at her lips, she scolds her….which turns her on even more. There is no winning with that menace.

-nightmares keep Sarah up, a lot of the time. Jade is attuned to this- has been since the very first time they slept in the same bed. She takes it upon herself to wake Sarah gently, if she’s crying- if Sarah’s already up, Jade forgoes sleep altogether. Sometimes, she offers to go on an early morning run with Sarah to take her mind off it. Other times, she distracts Sarah with quiet whispers of affection, of desire, and Sarah forgets everything in the universe except Jade’s touch, her mouth…

-She’s usually the one to dole out the pet names. “Darling” and “my love”, “sunshine” and “dearest” are a few terms Jade constantly hears. She’s not one for pet names for herself, but…idk occasionally Jade slips in a “Thanks, baby” when Sarah hands her something in passing and it just…shakes Sarah’s entire world??? Like she’s blushing and just immediately hide behind a slate and some lame work excuse. Bonus if Jade does so before they’re officially together 🫠💕

Anymore general observations about differences between the JP and English fandoms?

[Referencing this post and this post!]

***Please note that the observations in this post are just that: personal observations. They are not, in any way, meant to reflect ALL individuals, and nor are they entirely accurate.

I am also not saying any difference necessarily makes one part of the fandom “better” or “worse” than another; I am only pointing out what differs between them.***

Well 🤔 besides the differences in character popularities, demographics (EN has younger fans, JP has older fans), and Yuusonas (EN tends to have more detailed ones, JP has more simple ones)…

JP fandom tends to “keep to itself” (that’s the best way I can describe it) or has different ways of expressing their enjoyment of TWST than EN. In the EN fandom, it’s not too uncommon to see several threads in all caps just screaming nonsensically about the story and the characters. From what I’ve seen, EN is a lot more overt, loud, and sometimes heavily sarcastic about communicating about their favorite (and least favorite) aspects of TWST. That’s not to say that JP fans don’t, but they’re more “quiet” or infrequent about it, or they’re more careful to denote (when they go on longer rambles) that they’re just joking.

This is true of Asian vs Western fandoms in general, but JP uses a tagging system to make it easier for fans to find content they like/want to see and/or to block content they dislike/don’t want to see. There are tags for characters, ships, type of content, etc. However, this is much less commonly done in EN, and there is significantly more confusion about how the tagging system works. Sometimes the tags get spammed to increase visibility even if they aren’t relevant or tags are unknowingly misused (usually due to the EN poster not knowing Japanese).

There is definitely more misinformation circulating in EN over JP; this is likely due to the language barrier and some mistranslations or localization choices fan translations or the EN game makes which fails to communicate the lore or the characters as the original does.

JP has much less judgment of content; if there’s something they don’t like (ie a character, a ship, a genre, etc) they block and move on. That’s what the tagging system exists for; so fans can readily avoid subject matter they dislike. In EN, I feel like it’s more common to openly renounce the content they disagree with and to even share that opinion with others (including strangers and people who hold opposing views). In other words, JP is more “find the content you like and enjoy that”, while EN is more “this content should cater to me”.

This may harken back to cultural differences I already mentioned in an older post, but JP fandom is more community oriented whereas EN fandom is more individualistic in their content creation; again, EN has a strong emphasis on personal Yuusonas and OCs, as well as churning out new content to match updates and/or to get the most attention. JP creators will make content to express their excitement for the game (ie fan art for birthdays, events, anniversaries, main story updates, etc), but there is much less of a “grind mindset”, and usually the content is general enough that fans of a particular character can still enjoy it (even without being invested in a particular OC or Yuusona; for example, Japanese Yuusonas tend to be eyeless or have “blank slate” personalities whereas non-Japanese Yuusonas are more “colorful” and unique overall).

The last major thing I’ve noticed involves shipping of the characters with each other and/or with OCs or Yuusonas. JP has much more BL (“boy’s love”/men loving men) content (especially involving shipping the canon characters with one another), whereas EN shipping is centered on heterosexual ships (usually involving a canon character being shipped with a female OC or Yuusona).

Fic Recs: A World in a Grain of Sand Edition.

I love epic tales in which authors slowly build up their worlds and characters. I love losing myself in works slowly outgrowing canon word count to the point of forgetting to go to bed at reasonable hours. However, I am in absolute awe of writers who manage the rare feat of conjuring the same level of immersion with just a short story or even a one shot.

This totally incomplete list of my all-time favorite short(-ish) stories is a tribute to all intrepid souls out there tackling this challenge.

If you aren't familiar with the fandoms yet I still recommend diving straight in. They can be read and enjoyed totally out of context and you might just come out the other end with a new fandom obsession 😉

Haldir is quiet. Stoic. Solitary. Not the easiest person to be around for three weeks of guard duty up a solitary mallorn tree. He knows that and has made his peace with it. Until a so far unfamiliar fellow marchwarden comes along.

Do you know this moment of utter bliss when you come home after an absolutely rotten day and are finally able to snuggle up with a fluffy blanket, your favorite hot beverage and your comfort book/band/movie? This fic is that exact feeling distilled into 3000 words. Add a good helping of pure love for the more obscure corners of Middle Earth and two absolutely charming, introvert main characters et voila: utter contentment for you to come back to again and again and again whenever that fluffy blanket is out of reach.

Still not an Elves person. But I might have to fess up to being a Haldir person one of these days. This gem surely is another nail in my coffin 😅

I don't have all the official art, because there's just so darn MUCH of it, and because it's actually much more complicated to curate than most other art.

See, I try not to post duplicates, and usually I can easily ensure that by just searching for the artist and checking what of theirs I've posted, and/or by looking at the notes and just seeing if mdzsartreblogs is already in the "reblogged with tags" part of the notes.

But official art mucks that system all up because multiple people post it! I might have reblogged that piece, but not from that OP, and not in that post version. So if something isn't brand new, I'll often toss it in my likes for a later date when I can check if I've reblogged a different version of it, but I've been so busy recently that said later date really hasn't been coming, oops.

I also haven't been super consistent about reblogging art that's only on merchandise - sometimes I do, sometimes I don't, without much rhyme or reason. *sweatdrop*

There's also the complication, from the curation point of view, of where to draw the line on what counts as "art." So like...the donghua is composed of cels of drawn art, so should I count every screen cap I see of it as "official art" and reblog it? Or what about the manhua, the entire manhua is "official art," so should I try to collect every single panel? I've decided to draw the line on "no" for treating donghua screen caps as art for this blog, and I don't (usually) count comic pages from the manhua (though I've definitely made exceptions) but I'll reblog more "arty" stuff, like promo posters for the donghua, or chapter lead-ins for the manhua (or the incredibly sexy stuff that the manhua artist has been posting on Twitter of late, coughcough). But you may choose to draw the line in a different place, so what I have may not include whole categories that you'd want to collect.

That said, I've reblogged approximately 500 posts with official art over the almost three years I've run this account (three years this September!). And I can probably help a little with your question!

@t110n - posts a decent amount of MDZS, and posts official art for a huge range of danmei fandoms. One of my favorite blogs for that kind of thing; I super appreciate how much work they've put into sharing manhua art from a huge range of danmei fandoms.

@fluff-crt - also doesn't post everything, but is still active and has been active since before I joined the fandom; they also have posted some scanalations/translations and reposts with permission, though not as much recently.

@shandian-go - this is a Group Order account (the one I use personally, in fact, highly recommend) but from an art standpoint they're also a great resource for finding official merchandise art, as Mel always posts about the new merch with pictures and doesn't delete the posts advertising closed GOs.

@mdzs-equine-archive - posts official art that includes any equine (Apple, Lan Wangji's horse, etc.)

@minmoyu - in general, Minmoyu is one of the most incredible, helpful people I've found running a danmei account, and I've used resources they've written to help me buy print books, to find new danmei to read, and more. They also fairly regularly post official art, and have done so since the early days of danmei fandoms on Tumblr.

@p-h03n1-x - not active anymore, but used to post a lot of official art.

@zam81 - not super active, but basically all their posts are official art and/or photos for MXTX fandoms.

Those are the ones that spring to mind; if you scroll back through the tag on mdzsartreblogs and see who I've reblogged from, you'll spot some more; if you go back to waaaay in the beginning you'd probably be able to spot some folks who were more active once upon a time and are less around now (@aliceindanmeiland springs to mind, they haven't posted official MDZS art in a long time as far as I know, but were very active in the period when MDZS first hit Tumblr as a fandom, around the summer of 2018. Note that I personally joined the fandom in the fall of 2019.)

— three facts

I have never been diagnosed with anything in my life, but at this point it's getting hard to deny there's something going on with me. Most definitely some form of social anxiety, I'm terrified of all of you, but I don't know what else.

I really like nursery kitsch and I dress my room up in little antiques I collect.

I forget things super easy. I can't remember my childhood anymore, nor anyone I went to school with. Sometimes I struggle even to remember what I did the day before. But I remember the weirdest details all the time, like the colors of the toys in my childhood bedroom or a very specific poster on the wall.

I have been roleplaying for years (since I was in high school), but I usually don't count that experience too much because I don't feel like I started learning anything until much much later. Maybe my experience should really start when I joined this site? Have I improved any? That'd be about a year and a half now, right?

— sub-genres

I don't really have any favorites, but I'm not super great with writing action/combat so genres that include a lot of those are usually less likely to happen from me. I do really like to write angst and fluff in equal measure, but my angst tends to really upset people so I try not to do that too much these days. I don't want to hurt anyone.

— plots vs memes

I tend to work better with memes just because I'm really terrible at plotting. If I'm forced to sit there for a while and think of a bullet point list of things my characters can do to start interaction or scenarios they might find themselves in with others, I can, but it takes a really long time. I really suck at it. Getting memes in forces me to come up with something on the spot and I feel the pressure and it makes real work come out of me.

— long or short replies

I don't really have a preference as long as I have something I can reply, too. However, I do start to sort of lose energy for a thread if I'm consistently getting just one or two sentences per response. Like, that happening once or twice doesn't bother me, but if our thread has lasted 20+ notes and every single one I've replied to has been only one sentence or so I get stunted and can't think of ideas. I have no idea why my brain works that way, either, literally it's not a you problem that's just how I function. The sole exception to this is rapid-fire dash comm, and even then, if it last more than a few notes I start lengthening it and turning it into a real thread. Otherwise, I generally just try to match the length of my partner.

— best time to write

I usually get the most time to write between 7 AM - 4 PM CST on Mondays - Fridays because those are the days and times in which everyone in my house is gone and I'm free to do whatever I want. However on the weekends and any time past or before those I'm usually doing something with my family and don't have as much time. If we're just watching tv or something I can be on as late as 9 PM, but I can't promise that kind of schedule consistently. Aaaand since it's now summer and Sibling is off work (kind of), I may lose even that much of my schedule. Right now it really just depends on the day.

Time for a post that is way overdue. I am a hypocrite. Or, maybe, a hippocat. Here I am, describing some of the problems with active AI technologies, and yet I'm actively using commercially available tools. I'm sorry. This is a game-theoretical decision - if everyone else is using them, if I want to keep up, in some way, I have to play ball.

But I also want to shine a light on what is one of the biggest problems with AI technologies today, and one of the topics dominating the art community these days --- do AI technologies steal? Well, not inherently. Are they stealing? I would argue, yes, absolutely.

Take image generators like Dall-E, Midjourney, and Stable Diffusion. These are all built on LAION, a curated academic dataset of images and descriptions. The word doing the most work there is academic. This dataset was created for research purposes, not commercial purposes. The only way it is able to use artists' content is as free use, and there are limits to what you can do with content as free use. Most importantly, you can't make money from the work. These systems most certainly do.

"Now hold on," you may say. "How is a neural network learning from data any different from a person learning from seeing? It's just doing what humans do at a massive scale." Yes, exactly. Other people's assets are being used as a key cog of a system. Without LAION, Stable Diffusion wouldn't exist, and LAION is constantly being used as new datasets are being created.

IMO, it's interesting what an abuse of licenses this is on some level. If you put your artwork up as Creative Commons - well, honestly, you chose that route, so chalk that up to regret, not theft if you're unhappy with the consequences. But if you didn't put your artwork up as Creative Commons, then it shouldn't be used. This is even stated (in rather mealy-mouthed terms) in the LAION FAQ. But, then, the LAION dataset as a whole is released under the MIT License, for profit. So, like, ???

If you want to see if your data is included in LAION, by the way, you can head over to https://haveibeentrained.com/. Sorry, Mittens Humblecat, it looks like your data has been used without your consent :(.

"But wait!" you say. "You don't have any proof. You don't know that the commercially available versions of these algorithms are using the unlicensed data. Maybe they're using just CC-BY!" Well, I'll let you look at the Black Panther poster that I incredibly easily generated below with the "right words" on Midjourney and you can draw your own conclusions there. Note that I used no seed image. The point isn't whether it's exactly the poster or not, but its similarity to the poster tells volumes about what data was used, and how we can uncover it if we just textually condition on the correct subset. Ultimately, the previous objection is neither here nor there --- the problem doesn't become better if existing AI algorithms use only properly licensed and public domain data, because there is no way to verify this and it relies on the evanescent beneficence of corporations to do the right thing. I've learned to be wary of capitalism as an unbridled good.

This problem definitely predates image generators. Copyright lines have been found in code generated by GPT-3. I have no idea if that's on private data, but copyright is copyright, and this appears to be a smoking gun. Maybe this was a hallucinated copyright line, but I would say the burden of proof is now on OpenAI and Microsoft.

As these algorithms proliferate in society, your data, which you've for decades handed over to companies (emails, credit card transactions, GPS data, tweets, blog posts, code, images) --- will continue to be mined without your express consent. Maybe it's time to revisit what the EULA is allowed to include in giant blocks of legalese text. But even if you agreed, without the requirement of data transparency, you'll never know if these companies followed the rules. And even then, they can probably fake it, and you'll never know, because these models are just so gosh-darned unintepretable.

I’m not happy.

No, this post isn’t about depression―I mean, I’m a teenager, there’s a certain amount of depression involved in my life anyway, but that’s not what this is.

This is about my dad.

They played at the Aragon Ballroom in Uptown on the North Side, in the same neighborhood my mother lived in when my parents first met. I found out about this two days before they were scheduled to perform. I worked my ass off cleaning our entire apartment, by myself, to convince my dad to take me and let me see the show―specifically the Black Veil Brides portion, though seeing Motionless in White was great too (we left before Ice Nine Kills came on). Somehow, incredibly, we made it, and I had the time of my life. It was the first Black Veil Brides―the first real rock concert, really―I’d ever been to, and I loved it.

Dad was less than impressed; he’s not a Black Veil Brides fan, citing that though he likes Jake and Jinxx’s guitar work and Andy’s voice in general, there’s something about them that he just...can’t get into. And that’s fine, I respect that; he took me to the concert just because I wanted to go and because it was important to me, not because he had any particular interest in the bands themselves.

Naturally, I begged Dad to let me go, even if it does mean a two-hour drive to get there. I even wrote a whole-ass two-page argument as to how we could do it as cheaply as possible.

He said no.

I was devastated, naturally, and I haven’t stopped praying to whatever gods may be listening that by some miracle he’ll change his mind while there’s still time. But in all honesty, I kind of figured that would be his answer; I’m still resentful about it, since I think his reasons for saying no are kind of stupid, but in hindsight I’m not exactly surprised either. I don’t think he’s trying to be offensive, but...well, take earlier tonight as an example. We were at my little sister’s school book fair (remember when those were a thing?) and while I had found a couple that looked interesting, they were all $8 or more, which wouldn’t have been a problem if I wasn’t trying to save up money for band merch. And then he told me that he’d only ever met the bands he liked once, by accident, when Queensryche stopped into a music store for some reason or another before a show in Chicago. And then had the audacity to tell me not to get upset.

Naturally, I was upset. I’m a teenager, so hormones running amok already don’t help my capacity to deal with emotions (and most situations), and the way he just dismissed that hope of mine like it was nothing more than the foolish delusions of a teenage fangirl? That hurt. A lot. So I kept twisting away when he tried to touch my shoulder, or repeat “don’t get upset” in my ear, crossing my arms and trying not to cry. I sulked in the backseat the whole way home, and when my sister asked me a question that I failed to answer because I didn’t want to snap at her and get yelled at, Dad was short with me. In effect, he said something along the lines of, “If you’re going to brood and get pissy every time I mention Black Veil Brides or concerts or whatever, I won’t let you go to any, ever.”

And that made me cry.

I don’t know what the fuck is wrong. Usually my dad and I are on the same wavelength―a lot of my social anxiety and lack of toleration for People comes from him, as do my tendencies to be a loner in a group of friends―but lately every time he opens his mouth something comes out of it that hurts me.

And I don’t want to talk to him about it. I’m terrible at talking about personal things, and I’m afraid if I try and talk to him about this he’ll just dismiss it again and/or I’ll end up in tears, neither of which are favorable options. I don’t know what to do. I hate feeling like this, and I want my dad back...but how do I fix something when I don’t even know what’s broken?

On the internet in general, there are several stories and guides posted on the subject of giving blowjobs. Many of them are great and give various techniques and opinions on how to enhance oral sex on a guy. In this post, I'm focusing on the deepthroating aspect because I feel over time I have gotten pretty good at it and want to pass my knowledge along so that I may help others.

Deep what?

First, what is the definition of deepthroating? If a girl goes all the way down on a cock, gags, chokes, then immediately rises back up, is that defined as a deepthroat? Should there be a time limit on how long you have to keep it in your throat before it actually qualifies as deepthroating? I believe there are three levels of deepthroating, so the answer to all those questions are; yes!

· A stage one deepthroat is the first type I mentioned which most girls can do.

Quicker works for me but sometimes slower is better and you will have to see what works best for you. Try not to change the throat angle or the pace of the sliding cock until you have mastered your gag reflex. Even if you go to great efforts to keep everything consistent, there will be times in the heat of passion you will choke or gag. Positions

Of course there are many positions to give a guy a blowjob and to deepthroat in particular. Whether you are experienced and comfortable or just starting out, I feel the best position for deepthroating is with both of you right side up. The first advantage is you keep your orientation because while on your knees or sitting down, being right side up tells your brain that everything is "normal" which allows you to focus on the task easier without gagging. 'A Different Point of View'

Research:

In the book 'Understanding Comics' by Scott McCloud, I saw that all the comic strips had text inside the box, but I wanted mine to be both inside and outside the box, so that it seems the narrator is more of a third person, giving the reader hints to the storyline. I did see that some of his typeface was slightly bolder or larger depending on what the words were and the importance of them. This is similar to what we learnt in our Typography workshop on 9/10, the way I have the fonts and typefaces can show the meaning of the word. This is something I definitely want to include, so that it makes the comic more entertaining.

The next book I found in the Library was 'British Comics' by James Chapman; one comic I liked was 'Invasion!' because of the font. The textured font blends in well with the tone of the story, and I think a similar font could work well with mine, but I don't want it to be as bold.

I also looked at 'Advertising' by Thames and Hudson, as I want to make this into a poster as well as comic. The McDonalds advert was telling people what to do in simple phrases, which is similar to the 'Don't Trust Anyone' background text I want to do. This is so that the author already tells the readers not to trust the characters, but the reader may not notice and so wont pick up on the storyline until the very end. The second image is a poster I have, and I want to try out a text similar, I also like the detail and bright colours.

I am finding myself really drawn to matariki, my knowledge around it is limited so I think I will find enjoyment out of educating myself further. I guess i will decide which aspect of it that I am drawn to the most, so far I like the idea of decolonising the time, we live in a world based off of the gregorian northern hemisphere calendar, that makes no sense to the environment we live in.

I like this idea with matariki and time, how it calls upon those to spend time together with family, how afterwards it is encoraging us to take time off, but while researching I am finding things that I know I can relate to other things e.g this quote from dr. rangi matamua “I understand that there are tribal variations and differences, and that's awesome. It's meant to be different because we're different. I really support the coming through of traditional regional variations. My version has nine stars, because I can only go off what my ancestor says. If you have seven, have seven, if you have Puanga, have Puanga. And for Pākeha, accepting that has been a lot better, but Māori, we can get pretty territorial about stuff, like 'that's not what we believe'. That's the bit that makes me hōhā because that's not the point. The point is we celebrate it.” - which could be related to idea's in the Oxford History of Science soooo i guess i need to pick what aspect.

I could also go with how reading the stars gives us wisdom and tells us about the year ahead - wishing to different stars can mean different things, what all the different stars mean in my understanding etc.

now I still do not know what it means exactly by ideas i am discussing in my definition because I have no idea if it does want me to have my own definition for matariki. but I have found a couple of works that respond to ideas of/around matariki. Alot of the pieces of art/design I have found personify the stars in some way rather than potentially relating to my definition, but I guess as I delve further I can expand my definition and this may become a part of it.

Tamaora and Akapita took these concepts and ideas and created the stars as guardians of their element. they look beautiful and are finely crafted pieces of art.

i can't figure out how to rotate this image its just a poster that got put in my mailbox. but this poster promotes puanga - the celebration of matariki. Puanga is a single star that appears in the evening sky shortly before matariki rises each year. Puanga rises higher in the sky than matariki so it's recognized over matariki by some iwi and hapu who cannot view matariki. This was designed by David Hakaraia and is referencing the view of Puanga and matariki from the ahumairangi hill. He says of the work that the sky represents a kereru, fat from eating miro berries preceding the rising of Puanga.
