Bound helped me realise that I acctually dont want to be a theorist, I dont want to write down all of the lore and think real hard about it. I just want to look at the silly minecraft people and shake them really hard and yknow what, it doesnt matter if I predict a plot point and it doesnt matter if foreshadowing goes right over my head, because this is something I enjoy watching, I can enjoy it any way I want.

For some people that means writing everything down and predicting and analysing, but for me I think its just getting to watch to talk in chat every now and then, getting to see what other people who enjoy these things make. And I can just do that, and I never really thought about that

Today: I Dream In Another Language (2017)

I watched this movie a few weeks ago, and it STUCK.

(Don Evaristo and Don Isauro just before their first interview to record Zikril together.)

I Dream in Another Language is a Mexican magic realism movie about the death of a culture. It documents the efforts of a linguist trying to save the (fictional) language Zikril, spoken only by three old indigenous people. When one of them dies, the studies come to a halt, as the other two, Don Evaristo and Don Isauro, have not spoken to each other in over fifty years and categorically refuse to have anything to do with each other. As he looks further into this, the linguist discovers that the real reason for this feud is their past relationship and an awful lot of internalized homophobia.

Zkril is an artificial language, created specially for this movie out of respect for the people who still speak the endangered and disappearing languages today. The fact that it has seemingly magic powers, and that its speakers appear to be living on after their death, clearly puts the story into the magic realism genre.

This is NOT a happy movie. The internalized homophobia part is no joke, and the main theme of course is the loss of a language, and the culture that comes with it. 

But it damn sure is leaving an emotional impact.

I strongly suggest that everyone who is even vaguely interested in this subject read up about languages and language conservation. The Wikipedia page of this movie is as a good place to start as any, since there are related articles linked in the references list. I also would like to thank @celluloidrainbow for bringing this film to my attention.

lil behind the scenes tidbit wrt the last DRN pages, i figured out that some wizards can actually cast spells with sign language only, so that sequence is an approximation of the ASL for "disguise" hehe. im sure somebodys written something on faerûn human-specific sign language but im assuming it's minimum 1k pages long & written in 1998 with only a crusty pdf available in a corner somewhere on an angelfire website so we're just gonna have to give that one up to god LOL

Or I’ll pronounce the ch in ch sounds spanishly instead of irishly Boirche? nah its Bore-che (ch like choo choo)😰. or even the word Leche(milk🇪🇸)in spanish? nah its ‘Le-hé’ but like throatily apparently

sometimes i spell báinne (milk🇮🇪, i was revising my foods and drinks in both languages) with a tilda ‘báña’ which sounds suspiciously like baño except my dumbass looks at the b and a goes “broad!🥰” and pronounces it ‘bwaño’ bc apparently i cant just leave spanish words alone

(ive spelt ‘catholic’ like ‘caflich’ before, ive spelt the word ‘you’ with a j, ‘seven’ like ‘sebhen’, senior like señur and milk like milch)

in conclusion: dont pick two languages for gcses.

but do if you want to. just one language id a lot of work and i mean A LOT buts its great craic and if u enjoy languages then go u ig. 👍

one of my favorite things about living in a touristic place is how many languages I get to hear around me everywhere I go

I already live in a place where I mainly hear (apart from spanish and valencian) french, arabic, romanian and chinese all year round, but as summer approaches I start hearing more german and english, and sometimes italian and catalan. and more I can't name ofc bc I don't know them

it's so fun to be around people from so many different places and to hear so many different languages in person. and to see car license plates from all around europe

So apparently the Polish tumblr team call polls "ankiety" which is very funny to me as a native Romanian speaker because this word (anchetă - pronounced similarly to polish ankieta) has the connotation of police investigation. Like yeah I'm opening a criminal file on my mutuals. Vote here. Everything you say can and will be used against you )))))

This is totally unrelated to what I usually post but I have to get this out into the world.

I don't think I ever realized just how Norwegian and Swedish are similar to each other until today. I was helping out a customer at my work and she didn't speak a word of Norwegian, but instead of switching to English she just decided to talk in Swedish to me, and I still talked to her in Norwegian. I can't speak Swedish, but we understood each other incredibly well. We did hold a conversation with each other for at least 5-10 minutes. Each of us talking in their own language.

Languages are so fascinating and stupid sometimes.

my favorite thing about learning romanian is knowing AND understanding the lyrics to numa numa (aka dragostea din tei)

The thing is that while i can read write speak sing (as well as I can lol) and understand music in multiple languages, im absolutely garbage at translation. Could not be a translator as a living. I simply cannot do direct actual translation I translate the idea into how I would say it in English. Yeah I can Spanglish and actually that’s easier for me than most anything else, but I’m garbage at translating that coherently either way.

i really wish there was a change in the way we ask people what languages they know. i hate how people ask what languages do i speak. my favourite two languages are not spoken. i am a sign language girlie and i refuse to say that i speak it. i communicate through this beautiful language. all the languages i know are beautiful and they don’t deserve to be shrank down to just speech. the letters are beautiful, the grammar is beautiful. understanding languages is communication. it is a key part of communication and i’ve never felt as much joy as when i can communicate with the world through it. maybe it is speech sometimes but it’s also writing. i can interact with literature in different languages, i can message people in these languages. i can write these languages and use them for my own literature.
