Papa Arc: That's right! They'll be strangers in a strange land and they'll need someone to help them get used to our lifestyle. I'll be with Salem, so could you take care of your sister?

Cinder: Hmph! (Turns away)

Jaune: Uh... My "sister" tried to kidnap me and turn me into her sex slave... five minutes ago.

I’ve seen arguments complaining that hualian doesn’t need sexual themes in it and that it would be fine (or better) without it, and this opinion is completely valid to have and it’s completely fine to ignore the sexual themes to better your own enjoyment if it adds to the individual experience, though I also think it’s important to acknowledge sometimes that hualian does have a sexual relationship and that those sexual themes are prevalent throughout the novel and it’s okay for this to be the case. My personal opinion is that I think these themes are really cool and actually help us gauge character growth in a plot relevant way, especially for Xie Lian.

(Some book 7/8 spoilers ahead)

Along these lines, I’ve also seen people question why Jun Wu is so fixated on Xie Lian’s virginity. It’s true that it feels like a weird and specific thing to fixate on, though I’m sure the plot relevant answer to that has to do with Xie Lian’s cultivation. His cultivation style requires a pure mind and body, and maintaining cultivation rewards one with more spiritual energy. The short and simple answer is that by ruining his cultivation Xie Lian will be weakened in both power and mind, and attacking his virginity is the fastest route to achieve this (such as in the land of the tenders). As true as this is though, it really isn’t everything. Remember that Xie Lian begged to join the temple before he was of age because he was so determined to start cultivation. Not only did he take it extremely seriously, but his commitment to cultivation was one of the reasons (besides hating his dad) that he basically lived at the temple and wouldn’t come home for months at a time. Otherwise, he never found interest in consorts or getting married and starts chanting Dao De Jing if he even suspects something has the potential to start messing with him in order to maintain his steady heart and pure soul. Thus, cultivation is fun and rewarding to him.

This was before and during ascension, but what about after? After his second banishment, I honestly can’t imagine he’s actually trying to ascend again, so why cultivate?

Isn’t the answer there just because wants to?

At its heart, Xie Lian’s cultivation is something that seems to help ground him; it makes him feel comfortable and gives him something to focus on. Furthermore, it’s one of the last things Xie Lian actually has control over, isn’t it? Especially after falling so far into despair during his first banishment, cultivating is his way of rebuilding and holding on to himself, like a way of healing.

Thus, as it coincides with his cultivation, virginity is also extremely important to Xie Lian, simply because he chooses for it to be. Maintaining these principles is one of the main things that makes him feel like he’s still doing okay and is still in control.

All that being said, why did Jun Wu have a virginity detecting sword? If we really want to speculate a Xie Lian-centric answer to this, let’s establish that Jun Wu knows enough about Xie Lian to understand his individual relationship to cultivation. If Xie Lian is not a virgin during the Lan Chang in heaven scene, that means he has broken his cultivation. If Xie Lian’s cultivation is broken and he is genuinely unbothered by it, that means that Xie Lian has grown into a different, much stronger person than Jun Wu anticipated. It also means that controlling him by targeting his cultivation/virginity specifically isn’t going to be as effective as it might have been in the past. That’s what I think makes it matter so much to Jun Wu strictly from a plot perspective.

Following this logic can take us further too, because everybody who read extra chapters knows that Xie Lian does NOT leave this plot a virgin, but he’s very okay about it, which is also not at all where he starts. Xie Lian’s relationship with his own sexual nature is something that is constantly evolving throughout the novel, and it’s something that he struggles with tremendously that causes him a lot of torment whenever it’s challenged. Impurity isn’t just bad to him, it starts off as nearly catastrophic. As he learns to accept his feelings for Hua Cheng though, he starts to come to terms with that side of himself, as hard as it is for him to accept it.

Suddenly this scene (from the clearnoodle translation of the revised) comes to mind:

The whole alcohol scene is easy to play off as a mix of silly virginity joke and desperate need for a diversion, but there’s a lot of good stuff here. The first part clearly shows his stance about cultivation and where his priorities lie (in which absolute celibacy is more important than absolute sobriety). The second part, Hua Cheng’s response, is something like foreshadowing, isn’t it?

“Okay. However, I think that the Tao follows nature, and precepts and abstinences are inconsistent with Taoists’ free nature. What do you think, gege?”

If breaking his cultivation would be like losing a pillar of support, then his ability to rely on Hua Cheng is like adding another impenetrable, immovable, unbreakable pillar of infinite support. If he doesn’t have to worry about losing himself through indulgence becuase of this new immovable pillar….then what’s there to be afraid of? Isn’t he free to explore how he pleases?

If Xie Lian can break his cultivation without breaking his spirit, this symbolizes the ultimate growth and reclamation of power over himself. That’s why Xie Lian’s sexuality is something I think is extremely significant to both him and the story overall. He spends so much time tied down to the expectations he has of himself, but by the end of the novel he really does get literally and figuratively freed from this. Who knew it could all tie back to his virginity! Regardless, let’s take this as a psa that sexual stories are good and deserve to be told just as much as non sexual ones. Xie Lian DESERVES his freaky ghost sex and is in fact an icon of healing and growth for it!

every day that passes we're getting closer and closer to the final episodes of doctor who s14 (or s1, whatever) (i'm also in denial WTH does it mean that this season is almost over ????)

so before i forget (and before the last two episodes drop) i NEED to vent a bit about this season. the following are just my personal opinions (which might change after watching the season finale), please bear with me ^^

first of all - i am so glad doctor who is back !!! i must admit that my doctor who drought lasted for around 5 months as i got introduced to the show back in late summer 2023 and did a speed run of all nuwho seasons between september and november 2023. i got super excited for the december specials !! and i was even more surprised and thrilled when i found out a new season of dw was premiering in may 2024 !! i know i've been lucky to wait for so little to get immersed in a new dw season but i truly, truly missed it and i enjoyed every episode of s14 <3 now i'm sad to think that this is about to end, but it felt so good to finally see the doctor back in action and to get through each week thinking that one of my favorite characters/storylines/universes was gonna be there for me on the weekend <3 i love dw so much <3

#2 idk about you but i fell so easily for ncuti as the doctor and millie as ruby/the companion TT they're both so good, i really appreciated their acting this season and i would also say that it's probably one the (few) things that positively shocked me this time around. i guess it was a bit unfair for me to think that ruby wasn't my cup of tea after watching just 'the church on ruby road' ep because she totally surprised me this season. she's so great! millie's acting is on point, so captivating and funny to watch throughout the show. i can't wait to find out more about her character fr! well, what's to say about ncuti as the doctor .. ohmy oh my .. i don't think i've ever seen a doctor so confident, so flirtatious, so proud in themselves .. ncuti's doctor exudes charisma and i'm so here for it. that's absolutely not to say that the doctor's worries, traums etc. magically disappear (they're still very present and influence their every move), but what i loved the most about his acting is that he goes all the way into it. fifteen may become one of my favorite doctors ngl (say hi to eleven and ten) and i am so looking forward to where they're gonna take us next <3

#3 as for writing, i feel that something's missing ... don't get me wrong, i love rtd's cool nice funny episodes and seeing the doctor face a range of diverse situations (even the most unthinkable ones, e.g. space babies) is just priceless.. but there's some kind of void in it, too. now that i think about it, maybe it's not the writing itself but the length of the season - having less than 10 episodes doesn't really give us much time and space to properly explore the dynamics between characters, strengthen their relationships and make them grow both individually and as a whole. besides, i admit that i'm a bit biased, but i loved (most of) moffat's writing for the seasons he was a showrunner of and i personally would love to see ncuti bringing to life more stories written by moffat (yes..i know he wrote 'boom' for s14). basically, i miss 'old' nuwho seasons of 18+ episodes where we could get even more affectionate to the characters and the adventures that defined their journey through the multiverse T___T

before i move on to my last point, may i also add (storyline-wise) that i wished the episodes were more interconnected with each other? not necessarily with the narration, even just with easter eggs ^^" idk maybe moffat got me used to have high expectations lol (i'm still eager to find out who the lady appearing in all episodes is !!!! may this dw finale give us all the answers we need)

#4 i would have never thought i would write this (mainly because i would have never thought there could come a time when these gadget weren't going to be used as much) BUT I DEARLY MISS THE TARDIS AND THE SCREWDRIVER WHAT HAPPENED TO THEM ?!?!?! i loved previous doctors goofing around with their sonic screwdrivers and running in the tardis allowing us (the audience) to find out more and more about the endless number of rooms in it ... why does it seem like fourteen doesn't love their tools ?? why don't they show them more throughout the season ?? this is like classic items that can't miss in the episodes so WERE IS THAT SILLY GOOFY STUFF ?? also, as much as i enjoy fourteen and ruby going on adventures in different time periods etc. why aren't they EVER showed inside the TARDIS travelling and waiting to get to their destination ?? i'm just very nostalgic (i took this very personally, i'm sorry i'm just angry at rtd)

Jayna Hefford Rebuts Claims Regarding Natalie Darwitz's Dismissal

Jayna Hefford spoke to The Hockey News to provide the league’s perspective and reasoning for the dismissal of PWHL Minnesota general manager Natalie Darwitz.

Jayna Hefford spoke to The Hockey News Saturday afternoon to address the dismissal of now former PWHL Minnesota general manager and USA hockey legend Natalie Darwitz.Darwitz was let go this week, with an official statement coming from the league Saturday morning.

Hefford said the league brought in Darwitz because of their respect for her as a member of the women's hockey community, and acknowledged the job she did in building a Walter Cup championship winning team.

"Ton of respect for Natalie," said PWHL senior vice president of hockey operations Jayna Hefford of Darwitz. "I've known her for quite some time, played against her and obviously we hired her into this role because of the respect we have for her, and she did an incredible job in building this inaugural season, we understand how much she means to the state of Minnesota and we're obviously disappointed that it's come to this point which has led us to part ways."

Despite that on-ice success, Hefford says the decision to part ways with Darwitz was one the league had been looking at and reviewing for quite some time."

This is the result of a really thorough, thoughtful analysis of multiple reviews over the past number of months. This hasn't come down to two days or three days or anything like that, it's been a process to ensure that we could get the market and the organization right. Minnesota is not the only market that we've done work in, you know we had to take a look at every market and that's part of being a single entity that we work with them, we find gaps, areas that need to be better, really important was building a foundation in each of these markets and focusing on culture and leadership and we've done that at the league level as well, myself and my team have done work on that."

That review included a third party review by Bloom Sports, although the league was not ready to comment on specific information or items from that review that lead to this decision. Hefford stated this process was a difficult one for all involved."

That sort of I think just sets the stage, that this is something that's happened in multiple markets, however the feedback in this market after very thorough and extensive both internal and external reviews was that there wasn't a path forward with the current personnel as a whole in place," she said.

One item Hefford rebutted related to prior reports, was the relation of the decision to internal pressure from specific individuals. Rather, according to the league, it was a decision based on extensive reviews.

"It's not something that we took lightly, this has been obviously a really difficult process on us but of course that we acknowledge it's been really difficult on Natalie as well, but any suggestion that it was because one or two people disagreed, that's simply not the case,” Hefford stated.

“This has been months of work that's been put into this market and time and resources to get it right and it hasn't ended the way we wanted it to end but our job is to look at the league first, and take care of the league and then take care of the team and unfortunately for Natalie as a leader, sometimes the leader takes on greater responsibility than everyone else in the organization when things aren't flowing and operating as they should and I think that's the point we got at, that it was very clear we couldn't move forward the way we were."

When asked about the Bloom report specifically, Hefford said Minnesota's was not positive.

"If they were glowingly positive, in addition to the other internal review we did, if they were glowingly positive we wouldn't be here right now," said Hefford.

While the PWHL had their internal reasons for removing Darwitz, fans who saw the incredible on ice success of the PWHL Minnesota's inaugural season including record crowds and winning the first ever Walter Cup with a team Natalie Darwitz built. Hefford acknowledged it’s a difficult situation for those from the outside to understand.

“In terms of the fans, I get it, I get it. If I wasn't in the middle of this, I would feel the same way, I would be sitting here saying 'wait a second, they won, great attendance, great fans, lots of positive momentum,' but as we all know, until you're in the middle of an operation, meaning an organization, personnel, everything that goes into a successful organization, you really don't know what's going on,” said Hefford.

“Knowing that from the outside everything looked great and we still feel like this is the only decision that could be made, would be a strong suggestion that something needed to be done.”

According to Hefford the fact Minnesota won the inaugural PWHL championship did not factor into the league's decision to remove Darwitz from her role.

"Had Minnesota lost game three in Toronto going out on an 8 game losing streak...would that have made this feel any better, I don't think so, but that was a real possibility, they won that one game and then they went on that run so I don't t kthat necessaily changes internally how things were working or weren't working."

PWHL Minnesota won the first ever Walter Cup title in May, beating PWHL Boston 3-0 in game five of the PWHL championship finals, a series Minnesota captured 3-2.
