Fugazi - 13 Songs

Fugazi is an exceptional punk band in all the ways you'd expect: power in every single instrument, simplicity that doesn't get boring, and a heavy focus on societal ills. But there's more than just that. I feel like the thing that makes them not just exceptional, but unique, is that the lyrics strike an incredible balance between an interesting level of obfuscation and that crucial bluntness that ensures that the message doesn't actually get lost.

Naturally, the fact that this is a combination of EPs and not an album all its own makes the sequencing a little awkward, but as a collection of songs, this is some of the best punk I've ever heard.

Rage Against the Machine - Rage Against the Machine

Oh boy am I late to this one!

I was only familiar with Killing In the Name (and only in fairly passive contexts) before listening to this album so I wasn't really sure what to expect, and whether it'd be a case of the album having one standout track and the rest just being filler. Well, Killing In the Name definitely stands out, but the rest of the album definitely isn't filler.

While I complimented Fugazi's balance of thought-provoking poetry and pure politics on 13 Songs, I have to say RATM makes pure bluntness come across too sincere to dismiss om the grounds of simplicity. Every single line is delivered with such potent anger, and it really got me whipped up in the emotion of it, at least on a second listen.

Hüsker Dü - Zen Arcade

Zero expectation listens to punk-adjacent albums is a theme on this post, and a theme that Zen Arcade is contributing to. All I knew was that Hüsker Dü's reputation seemed good. My lack of expectation meant that 1. I only found out that apparently it's a story album after listening to it, and 2. I was absolutely blindsided by the album's more experimental flourishes.

One of my favourite flourishes came with Pink Turns to Blue, which takes punk and filters it through a noise-pop/shoegaze sort of sound to great effect. That is probably the most noteworthy example, but compared to some more repetitive punk albums I've heard, an album feeling so ceaselessly experimental it seemed disjointed by punk standards was honestly more to the albums benefit than it's detriment.

underscores - fishmonger

I'm very new to the hyperpop sphere, but I don't think I could ask for a better gateway to it than underscores. The blend of that indie rock sound with the eternally online stylings of hyperpop is a personal cheat code for pleasure for me, particularly on their new album Wallsocket, which you will listen to if you know what's good for you. After listening to her other projects, though, I can very happily say that they are scratching the same itch (if not quite as well).

I've written before about how the unique concepts of the tracks off the new album were a highlight, and, again, that extends to a lesser degree to her older work, which has been fantastic, and where the interesting concepts are comparatively limited, the execution makes up for it.

Given a few more releases of this sort of quality, underscores could well become one of my favourite music acts I just love this style so much.

Fugazi - Repeater & 3 Songs

Basically everything that I said about 13 Songs applies here, but there are a few differences that make this worthwhile to talk about on it's own. One of those differences is that this essentially plays like a regular album with three bonus tracks, which means that my one noted criticism of 13 Songs doesn't apply here. The other key difference that comes to mind is that it feels to me as if there is more aggression in this album. It's grittier and angrier, and while it does throw off the balance that I liked so much on the other album, I also appreciate that it makes it a unique listening experience while also not changing enough to make it clearly worse.

The Strokes - The New Abnormal

The Strokes were so back with this one. They happen to have left again shortly after, not having released anything in over three years, but they were so back for a second there.

This album brought back everything that made The Strokes great in those first few albums and occasional singles thereafter, and kept kept it all stripped back to it's bare essentials so they could really be heard. Their ability to have a musical composition in which everything (bass, guitar, drums, other guitar, synth...) both shines on it's own and comes together in this glorious tapestry is only arguably matched by Radiohead, and specifically during their In Rainbows era. And that talent is here on full force on The New Abnormal.

Also present is a tasteful experimentation with synths and electronics, which don't just justify themselves, but improve the songs they are on. They are used to great effect on At the Door, for example, where the sawed synths create a potent feeling of fear and harshness that makes it unlike any song The Strokes have ever made.

Between the outstanding mixing, versatility of sound, and the back-to-their-best Strokes songcrafting, this is the best Strokes album hands down for my money, but you guys aren't ready for that discussion yet, so I'll just leave it at "album good" until you are.

Samara Joy - Linger Awhile

I can't pretend that I actually have much to say about this, because I'm still pretty new to jazz, but Samara Joy is a very charismatic vocalist and the album is a great one for a chill vibe so I thought it deserved to be highlighted more than just putting it in the playlist. If you're looking for a modern in for jazz, I found this one very enjoyable.

Daft Punk - Random Access Memories

The second album of the post where I should have gotten to it way earlier. Pure dance music just never really appealed to me, nor do songs without vocals, generally, and I was under the impression that Daft Punk were entirely that. Clearly I was wrong, although I'm still unsure as to what degree.

In any case, I loved this album. Instant Crush is a massive highlight just on the basis of it's super satisfying pop sound and just-novel-enough concept. Giorgio By Moroder is also a great love letter to artistry, if a strage one to consider a highlight on account of the spoken word vocals. And of course it goes without saying that the Nile Rodgers and Pharrell Williams backed Lose Yourself to Dance and Get Lucky are amazing, funky, and infectious bops that keep you engaged for every second of their runtime.

It's a classic album for a reason, and I apologize to music for not listening to it earlier.

6. Do you have your work beta'd? How important is this to your process?

I think it's usually important, but not essential. If I have a friend in the fandom who is up for it, I'll probably ask them to beta like 80-90% of what I write in that fandom. But I've posted many fics (probably more than half? I'm not sure) without a beta. There are some fics where I'm really uncertain about something and I will really want someone else to go over it to tell me if it's actually a problem or not, and if so what exactly is off about it.

But usually I think, it's mostly just nice for me to be able to talk about my fic with someone, both to get ideas and stuff but also just for fun.

11. Link your three favorite fics right now

Okay I have a very specific list of 3 fics that make me feel certain emotions I can't get elsewhere, and idk if all three of them are really my most favorite fics, but they do go as a set so I'm reccing them together (even though once I started looking through my bookmarks to find these fics, I kept finding more fics that are so so so good and I would be here all day if I didn't stick to this trio)

Cornstalk Fiddle by notbecauseofvictories

I rec this to literally everyone because I think it is one of the top 10 works of fiction in general that I have encountered. It's a fic of the song The Devil Went Down to Georgia (so very little context necessary) and it's a really really beautifully written story about music and hope and life, and also a very human person falling in love with the very inhuman Devil

We Must Tend our Garden by DesdemonaKaylose

This is a Small Gods post-canon Discworld fic about the god Om being in love with his head priest Brutha. The dialogue and narration feel very Discworld while also having a sort of peacefulness and heartbreaking yearning that isn't really Terry Pratchett's thing, and it works together so well.

Of Uruk by electrumqueen

This is a pre-canon Bartimaeus fic and idk exactly how to describe it. It's basically a character study between the djinni Bartimaeus and a boy he once loved, Ptolemy, though 5 different scenarios where over the course of them knowing each other Bartimaeus tells Ptolemy his "origin story" (different from his story of being created), each with varying amounts of truth to them. It's just such a good story about names and the way other people in the past and present can shape you and how you tell a story impacts it but also what it says about you and your audience, and I wish Bartimaeus was a more popular series just so they could read this fic (that's a lie, I think it the series should be popular for it's own merit, but anyway)

Tamales con quesillo y salsa roja / in San Cris: con rajas poblanas. Yum! They remind me of semolina dumplings.

Feline encounters: the cutest cat at Iguana: red, white and brown with green eyes; very friendly and gentle. / The grey cat who followed me home, talking to/meowing at me, stopping me to demand scratches. / My black cat friend at Estrella Fugaz.

First impressions are scarily accurate. Somehow you can just feel who belongs in your tribe.

Attending the self love workshop at Hridaya Yoga (and the fact that a handbook I randomly picked up in a hostel led me there). So much input, realising how much work there is to be done. The ho'oponopono prayer, meditation and partner exercises. Journalling about my insights. New ways of thinking and connecting. Staring into 14 strangers eyes for what felt like forever, holding hands. Intense. Feeling the love, the group finally connecting on the third day. Especially because it was Sasha's birthday and we danced to 70s disco music.

Meeting with Carina, Sasha and Fico (what an amazingly sympathetic power couple, I admire them so much) the next day. Feeling at ease. Talking about language, culture, the state of the world, very personal insights and thoughts about healing.

Playa Mermejita. Alone, black sand, crabs, storm damage. Reading. Getting a tan on my belly for the first time in my life (have I mentioned that I've finally started wearing bikinis?). Writing in the sand.

Men with space buns. Men who like cats. Men who go to self love workshops. Men who've overcome toxic masculinity. I love people who're not stuck in stereotypes and typecasting that comes with their gender. Maybe that's why I'm attracted to women with short hair and masculine traits and vice versa.

Daring to go to the Kirtan. Om Shanti.

Spanish progress. Connecting with Eva, my maestra from Madrid. The first time I understood the difference between the imperfecto, presente perfecto and pretérito (but realising I will actually have to study this time). Having real conversations in Spanish. Compliments on that, and my accent. Feels good because I've been frustrated by my lack of ability to express myself.

Coconut milk tapioca pudding with passion fruit compote. Vegan hot dogs.

The friendly guy from Guadalajara. Erika, the pretty graphic designer from Playa. The whacky Australians.

Taking the colectivo to Chamula with Ricardo. Getting to know him. Libra musician. Italian cuisine. Dog lover. Conversing in Spanish!! Buying tiny candles to express gratitude and to make a wish. Taking in the very peculiar atmosphere of the church. The burping, the animal sacrifice, the sea of candles and pine needles all over the floor. Visiting the graveyard. Getting elote straight out of a car trunk.

Stumbling upon the most beautiful earrings ever. Brass crescent moons with long, thin feathers. The artist made them especially for me!

The Bad People vintage store in San Cris.

More waterfalls. A rainbow, for a short moment. The view over the valley. The Palenque ruins - super beautiful and impressive even though I didn't feel the magic there.

A blissful evening shopping at a super Chedraui after a stressful day. The sesame bread with queso and jalapenos. / Each and every time I'm at a place with a kitchen. I love preparing my own food and going shopping for groceries. It's what I often miss on the road.

A quiet apartment with a very comfortable bed and a TV with Netflix. Non-blinding lights. The height of luxury when you don't feel great.

No Limit - a movie about freediving based on Audrey Mestre's life. Triggered a little internet deep dive.

Arriving in Merida. A friendly taxista, the amazingly decorated house with high ceilings and art from all over the world. The hostess' granddaughter Victoria (4) built a castillo with me and sang for me, so cute.

A late night vegan pita sandwich with grilled veggies.

LED balloons. Sparkly. Fun!

Remote Scrabble.

Cracking my crunchy spine - feels so satisfyingly straightening.

Visiting Wendy's juice bar. Talking to her about giving up fear. Just doing it. The illusion of safety.

Ivan, an illustrator who invited me to his boardgame night. Pizza. Friends. New words. A cat. Lovely.

An intuitive infatuation with the chef/owner (?) at Plants of Wonder in Merida. The wink. The voice. The presence. Yas.

Found a tiny baby kitten. So light. Can't have weighed more than 200g. And the high pitched meowsies!!!

Arriving in Belize. After going crazy over all the misinformation and seemingly impossible way ahead of me. Enjoying the view from the boat. Friendly people. Caribbean vibes.

Petting stingrays. Surprisingly soft and squishy.

TALK - Run Away to Mars

Snorkelling in the Hol Chan marine reserve. I saw so many animals - manatees, a lobster, sharks, dolphins, tarpons, eagle rays and stingrays. Elaborate coral formations, a shipwreck. Lunch and rum punch on the boat and the friendly crew. We all got a drink at Sip'n'Dip afterwards. I watched the sunset with Sam and then we ran into the Germans again at dinner.

A travel buddy to go to Guatemala with (Sam). Deep talk. Helping him break out of his hostel in the morning.

Eating purple candy fully expecting to bite into disgusting grape flavor but it's nice blackcurrant instead.

Travelling with Moana and Yuki.

Following around the coatis at the Tikal ruins. Bonding with Steve.

Swimming, sunset and socialising on Isla de Flores.

The amazing restaurant at Los Amigos.

9hrs on the bus. Stopping at McDonald's. Getting a cheeseburger without meat. Worth it. Just for the pickle.

The Semuc Champey grutas. Walking in with just a candle in your hand which created such a fantastic atmosphere. Swimming, climbing, jumping and sliding. / The river pools and the waterfall. Diving under a rock formation, fighting claustrophobia. Riding on the pickup truck standing up. The great view of the mountains and valleys.

some random headcanons of the om characters living in my head rent-free

my first ask,,, *faints* anon, you don't know how happy i am for getting that ask and i thank you for that. it's a bit late because i'm currently reviewing for our test week and i wrote these as soon as ideas popped in my mind. i hope you like these though these are quite short and i could only write for a few characters, sorry about that. ʕ´• ᴥ•̥`ʔ

- the brothers definitely went to a comic-con in the human world with levi and mc once. after they begged convinced lucifer, he agreed doing cosplays with them. mammon tried to take pictures of him but why is the camera not working?

- on their last day, they went all out and cosplayed as the main characters of tsl, making the crowd stare at them in awe. levi did a great job in making their costumes, he got a lot of praises from his brothers and mc that day. when mc took a photo with all of them, the camera finally worked. lucifer supposes they could keep at least one picture, just this once(nah, it wasn't just this once).

- diavolo was kinda sad he couldn't come and join the fun, but when mc sent him the photo they almost got blinded by his smile.

- mammon actually has a great voice, next to asmo. he sings a lot in the shower(idk if that was true but i read somewhere that this is canon) and you can hear it from outside of his room.

- even when he's attending a student council officers' meetings or while he's gambling, he'll be humming a tune of a song stuck in his head. mc has to be prepared when it's karaoke night though, he's gonna sing a lot and he will give them an extra microphone to sing duets with him.

- he'll scream at the microphone whenever someone gets too close or hogs mc all to themselves. it's a miracle on how his voice was still fine the next day while mc's is a bit hoarse from all the singing.

- asmo is kinda responsible on why his brothers' outfits looks decent from time to time. he gives them fashion advice which they all follow except for one person.

- he definitely scolds satan sometimes whenever he sees his older brother's outfit. he'll scream and cry on how disastrous it is unlike his beauty and decides to give satan a make-over whether he likes it or not.

- satan's outfit actually looks pretty decent for a day thanks to asmo, but the next day he'll be back to his old ways. asmo just sighs and mumbles "why did i even try?" but he will do it again every month.

- he doesn't talk about it, but belphie guards mc's dreams sometimes, especially when they sleep with him in the attic. he watches as some of their memories play/their imagination go wild in their dreams.

- whenever they dream of an embarrassing memory they had a long time ago, he'll tease them whether they remember it or not. if nightmares start to brew in their mind, he uses his ability to make them go away, replacing it with pleasant dreams instead.

- solomon knows how to play a part in musicals. he joined a theatre before, and still remembers the songs he once performed centuries ago. if mc is a theatre performer, he will offer to practice with them if they have an upcoming performance.

- he'll make them potions that can help their voice too. it might look weird but not to worry, those are effective and mc can already notice the difference after drinking the potions.

- simeon can sense if there's something wrong with humans; like if they're sick he can tell what it is. he often checks up on mc and their well-being, to make sure they're okay.

- if ever they're sick, simeon offers to help mc with his healing powers. if it's something like a chronic illness, he'll still try to ease the mc's pain and assist them in any way he can.

- diavolo feels very happy whenever mc visits the castle to spend time with him and barbatos. the butler might not show it, but he's also happy that the human trusts them and is willing to spend time with them.

- the only time they get to socialize with other demons in the castle is when they hold balls for random and special events. if they hold a ball and mc is there too, the two watches them like hawks to make sure they're safe.

oh wonderful!! wooyoung yelling "my son" is one of my favorite moments too. lol I'd scream about my ult and the performances he gave during kingdom but I don't want to reveal myself, I will simply be shrouded in mystery 👻 it was so excellent having both ateez and skz there, I enjoyed it tremendously

I'm not going to say exactly but there's a rather cursed version of a stray kids song that I transposed and then posted om Tumblr. It's a song in a minor key and I made it in a major key. It's horrible. It's awful. It's wonderful

as for other genres, I rly love rap and classical. Lmao quite the difference, huh? I also like rock a whole lot. The band Paramore is 10000/10

And I haven't done any covers of ateez yet rip, it's quite hard to and also I'd have no groups/orchestras that would play them so I don't rly see a reason for why I should write them. Also the rap parts are harder to transpose 😭😔

awww true tho - my friend (who's a fantasy) and i used to stream the episodes live together and rooting for more than one group was fun! seeing her react live to SF9 wearing jeans of all things on sports day was almost as entertaining as sports day itself HAHAHA.

Oh don’t you worry, I have a lot about Lancey Lance (but here’s only a few bc I’m lazy and cooking while writing this) And i’m just throwing this out there but Hunk totes got laid in high school and at the Garrison. Lance was pretty jealous

Doesn’t believe you at first when you agree to go out with him

“Yeah, haha, that was a joke! I know you wouldn’t really go out with me, we’re great just being friends and we shouldn’t jeopardi–wait what?”

“I said ‘Yes’? As in, Yes Lance, I will go out with you?”

“Oh….I didn’t–what?”
